The Response line (应)
What it means
The Response line (应爻) represents the 'other person' in the hexagram, opposite the World line, indicating the other party or that place. For divination concerning people without specific titles, unacquainted friends, itinerant crafty people, enemies or hostile nations, or a specified location such as mountains, waters, temples, or altars, the Response line is the Use Spirit. If the Response line moves, the other person's mind is prone to change and entrusted matters are often reversed. If the Response line is empty, the other's intention is difficult to align and plans are hard to achieve. If the Response generates the World, or the World overcomes the Response, it is favorable for me. If the Response overcomes the World, it is unfavorable. Whenever the World and Response overcome each other, even good matters require effort.
