The trigram Kan is in the sixth position, Zhen in the seventh, Li in the eighth, and Dui in the ninth. These four trigrams are known as the four cardinal trigrams, used to symbolize the four seasons and four directions, referred to as the "Four Images." Each year has twelve months, and each month is assigned five trigrams. [Comment by the editors of the Siku Quanshu] The character "month" in "monthly May" should be read as "trigram." Each trigram occupies six days and seven parts, and each cycle totals three hundred sixty-six days, with an additional four parts added each year. [Comment by the editors of the Siku Quanshu] The term "six days" should be read as "five days," and "four parts" should be read as "one part of four days."
Cumulative years through the ages
Starting from Jiayin, the period from Fuxi to Wuhuai was 57,882 years, Shennong was 540 years, the Yellow Emperor was 1,520 years, Shaohao was 400 years, Zhuanyu was 500 years, Di Ku was 350 years, Tang Yao was 100 years, Yu Shun was 50 years, Xia Yu was 431 years, Yin Shang was 496 years, the Zhou dynasty was 867 years, and the Qin dynasty was 50 years. The total is 63,612 years. Adding the 491 years from Gengxu onwards, the total becomes 64,133 years, and adding two more years to the consecutive periods. [Comment by the editors of the Siku Quanshu] The character 'ji' should be 'qi'.
The method to calculate the day corresponding to the 'track' number is: first list the track number, divide it by the number of days in the current year to get the track; the remainder, each part corresponds to a fraction of a day. The method to calculate the day corresponding to the 'fold' number is: divide the fold number by twenty-four, and the result is the track for that day. All fold numbers are based on the current year's fold number, and if there is a remainder, handle it as described above.
The twelve message hexagrams each have three sequence numbers: The hexagram of Return has the numbers one, thirteen, and twenty-five; the hexagram of Approach has two, fourteen, and twenty-six; the hexagram of Great Communication has three, fifteen, and twenty-seven; the hexagram of Great Strength has four, sixteen, and twenty-eight; the hexagram of Decision has five, seventeen, and twenty-nine; the hexagram of Heaven has six, eighteen, and thirty; the hexagram of Meeting has seven, nineteen, and thirty-one; the hexagram of Withdrawal has eight, twenty, and thirty-two; the hexagram of Non-Communication has nine, twenty-one, and thirty-three; the hexagram of Observation has ten, twenty-two, and thirty-four; the hexagram of Reduction has eleven, twenty-three, and thirty-five; the hexagram of Earth has twelve, twenty-four, and thirty-six. [Comment by the editors of the Siku Quanshu] The above thirty-six numbers are arranged in a cyclical manner. Originally, the numbers under the hexagrams of Observation, Reduction, and Earth were all lost, and they have now been restored. Following this, Zhen is thirty-seven, Xun is thirty-eight, Kan is thirty-nine, Li is forty, Gen is forty-one, and Dui is forty-two.

[Old annotations] The markings added with hooks are those added during the collation of the text, not present in the original text; only the single numbers are without hooks. [Comment by the editors of the Siku Quanshu] This passage is a later addition made by someone to indicate certain points. Originally, it was mixed into the main text, but now it is preserved in its original form, distinguished by being written in small characters as a marginal note. The numbers listed on the right: the number of changes of dynasties is forty-two, the number of messages is thirty-six. The six sons of Zhen, Kan, Gen, Xun, Li, and Dui are included in these numbers, making a total of eighty-four prohibitions, each associated with its own category and separately derived. Pure virtue has seven items, three of which are modeled after Heaven and four are modeled after Earth. [Zheng Xuan's commentary] The three items modeled after Heaven are three times six, which equals eighteen; the four items modeled after Earth are four times six, which equals twenty-four.
The method for calculating the numbers in the sixty-four hexagrams is: for a yang line, use nine. According to Zheng Xuan's commentary, multiply by the number four of the four seasons, resulting in thirty-six. For a yin line, use six. According to Zheng Xuan's commentary, multiply by the number four of the four seasons, resulting in twenty-four. The method for calculating the track numbers is: for a yang line, use nine and seven. According to Zheng Xuan's commentary, multiply each by the number four of the four seasons, then add them together and double the result, resulting in one hundred and twenty-eight. For a yin line, use eight and six. According to Zheng Xuan's commentary, multiply each by the number four of the four seasons, then add them together and double the result, resulting in one hundred and twelve.
For example, the Qian hexagram has six lines. If all are old yang lines, [Zheng Xuan's commentary] states that old yang is counted as nine. Using the number of the four seasons, multiply it by nine, four times nine equals thirty-six. Then multiply thirty-six by the six lines, resulting in two hundred and sixteen. If they are young yang lines, seven, [Zheng Xuan's commentary] says use the number of the four seasons to multiply, four times seven equals twenty-eight. [Commentary by the editors of the Siku Quanshu] These two sentences should be marginal notes, originally mixed into the main text, now corrected. Multiply twenty-eight by the six lines, resulting in one hundred and sixty-eight. Adding the two numbers together gives three hundred and eighty-four, then doubling it results in seven hundred and sixty-eight.
For example, the Kun hexagram has six lines. If all are old yin lines (six), [Zheng Xuan's commentary] uses the number of the four seasons to multiply, four times six equals twenty-four. Then multiply twenty-four by the six lines, resulting in one hundred forty-four. If they are young yin lines (eight), [Zheng Xuan's commentary] uses the number of the four seasons to multiply, four times eight equals thirty-two. Then multiply thirty-two by the six lines, resulting in one hundred ninety-two. Adding the two numbers together gives three hundred thirty-six, and doubling it results in six hundred seventy-two. The combined number for the Qian and Kun hexagrams is one thousand four hundred forty. [Zheng Xuan's commentary] other hexagrams are calculated in the same way according to the number of their yin and yang lines. All yang lines are multiplied by sixty-four, and then the result is doubled. All yin lines are multiplied by fifty-six, and then the result is also doubled.
The method of calculating 192 lines is: take the 64 hexagrams and halve them to get 32, then multiply by 6 to get 192 yang lines; yin lines are also 192, adding them together gives 384 lines. Another method: one hexagram has six lines, multiply by 8 to get 48; then multiply 48 by 8 to get 384 lines. From Fuxi's heavenly stem Jiayin to a certain year Yihai in the reign of Emperor Zhongzhen of the Tang dynasty, there have been 2,761,220 calculations; by March of a certain year in the reign of Emperor Yuanhe, it is 2,761,231 calculations. [Comment by the editors of the Siku Quanshu] This text calculates up to the Yuanhe period of the Tang dynasty, which should also be added by later people. Now it is written in a lower position.
