King Wen's Coin Divination

The saying from ancient times is this: the reason a divination is efficacious is that this path leads straight through to the spirits. By it one may judge good and ill fortune, settle doubts and worries, distinguish yin and yang from the images of the lines (爻), and examine from them the fundamental mechanism of change. Hence its principles are of the utmost subtlety, and the matters it concerns are of the utmost weight. The Doctrine of the Mean says, 'The way of utmost sincerity can know what is to come'—when the heart is sincere to the extreme, one can foresee the future. Therefore if the one who asks a question is not sincere, the spirits will not respond; if the one who reads the hexagram (卦) judges at random, the hexagram will not be efficacious. These two statements are indeed settled truth. One often sees people of the world go to divine as soon as something arises, yet remain dim and heedless of this one word 'sincerity': some have drunk wine and eaten meat (the text's '茹晕' is for 茹荤, eating flesh), some have acted wantonly and are unclean in body and mind; then only at the last moment do they offer a prayer, and already they expect to move the spirits—is this not confusion? Still others entrust the question to relatives and friends, or send servants to ask in their place; can people in that state still be called those who inquire of the hexagram? The eight trigrams can penetrate the principles of heaven and earth, yet in all affairs they are efficacious only for those whose hearts are sincere.

Formula for Each Line Holding the Affair

This section explains how to judge when each of the Six Relatives (六親) occupies the Self line (世爻). The Self line is the line in the hexagram that stands for the inquirer himself; opposite it is the Response line (應爻), which stands for the other party or the outside. If the Self line is generated and supported by the monthly branch and the day stem-branch and stands in a prosperous or rising phase, its force is strongest: affairs proceed smoothly and with great good fortune; all kinds of plans succeed as hoped. If the Use Spirit (用神)—the line that corresponds to the matter asked—also generates and combines with the Self line, the excellence is beyond measure. Conversely, if the Self line falls into the ten-day void (旬空) or is broken by the monthly clash (月破), neither is auspicious; if it suffers conquest, harm, punishment, or clash, that too is unfavourable. When the Parents line occupies the Self: the person himself toils; even with many wives and concubines, heirs are hard to obtain. If the Officer-Ghost line stirs and the Wife-Wealth line is prosperous, it is favourable to sit examinations. If the Wife-Wealth line stirs, one need not be anxious about seeking profit. If one divinates concerning oneself and the Wealth line stirs, there is no worthy wife at home, and one also fears that the span of life will not be long.

When the Children line occupies the Self: all affairs are without worry, but seeking rank and fame most forbids it from standing at the head—because the Children line conquers the Officer-Ghost line, and rank and fame take the Officer-Ghost as their Use Spirit. If one seeks safety while fleeing disorder, comfort can be obtained; lawsuits from this time on may be settled and put to rest. So long as this line has generation and support and no conquest, everything is auspicious; if it only suffers conquest and has no generation, it instead adds sorrow. When the Officer-Ghost line occupies the Self: affairs are hard to settle; if one divinates concerning oneself, one either falls ill or incurs official trouble. One constantly worries that money and goods will be lost (the text's '失晚' should be read as '失脫', loss). Only in seeking rank and fame is it most welcome, indicating that one can hold power and manage affairs. If the Officer-Ghost line enters the tomb (墓) (for example a Metal line entering Chou, or a Wood line entering Wei), worries and suspicions have no day of dispersal; if the day branch or a moving line clashes open the tomb-storehouse, then misfortune turns to joy.

When the Wife-Wealth line occupies the Self: it benefits the flourishing of money, but what one most fears is meeting a moving Brothers line ('交重' refers to the moving lines of old yin and old yang), because the Brothers line is the spirit that seizes wealth. If one further meets the Children line moving openly or moving in the dark (hidden and receiving generation: a hidden movement), it benefits oneself but will conquer the Parents line and hinder study and literary fortune. When seeking office or asking about a lawsuit, a Wealth line in command is auspicious; but if it moves and changes into a Brothers line or an Officer-Ghost line, that is greatly inauspicious. When the Brothers line occupies the Self: do not seek wealth; if the Officer-Ghost line appears at the same time, one must consider that trouble is coming; if the Vermillion Bird (朱雀) among the Six Spirits (六神) also joins it, guard against disputes of the mouth and tongue; once the Brothers line moves, it will certainly harm wife and wealth. If at this time the Parents line comes to generate it, the person himself will have long life; if the Brothers line changes into an Officer line or Ghost line, there will be disaster.

The Mixed Heavenly Jiazi (Earthly Branches Fitted from the Bottom Up)

乾震宮內卦子寅辰,外卦午申戌;坎宮內卦寅辰午,外卦申戌子;艮宮內卦辰午申,外卦戌子寅;巽宮內卦丑亥酉,外卦未己卯;離宮內卦卯丑亥,外卦酉未己;坤宮內卦未己卯,外卦丑亥酉;兌宮內卦己卯丑,外卦亥酉未;

This is the formula for fitting the Earthly Branches by the Najia (納甲) method, also called the Huntian Jiazi (渾天甲子). When fitting a hexagram, place them in order from the first line (the lowest line) upward. For hexagrams of the Qian (乾) and Zhen (震) palaces: the three lines of the inner trigram, from bottom to top, are Zi, Yin, Chen; the three lines of the outer trigram are Wu, Shen, Xu. For hexagrams of the Kan (坎) palace: the inner trigram is Yin, Chen, Wu; the outer is Shen, Xu, Zi. For hexagrams of the Gen (艮) palace: the inner is Chen, Wu, Shen; the outer is Xu, Zi, Yin. For hexagrams of the Xun (巽) palace: the inner is Chou, Hai, You; the outer is Wei, Si, Mao (every '己' here should be read as Si, '巳'). For hexagrams of the Li (離) palace: the inner is Mao, Chou, Hai; the outer is You, Wei, Si. For hexagrams of the Kun (坤) palace: the inner is Wei, Si, Mao; the outer is Chou, Hai, You. For hexagrams of the Dui (兌) palace: the inner is Si, Mao, Chou; the outer is Hai, You, Wei. In general, yang hexagrams (Qian, Zhen, Kan, Gen) run the Earthly Branches forward, and yin hexagrams (Xun, Li, Kun, Dui) run them backward: this is the fixed pattern of Najia.

Fitting the Six Relatives (from the Bottom Up) · Song of the Noble (On a Jia or Wu Day, a Chou or Wei Line Is the Noble)

This is the formula for assigning the Six Relatives. The Six Relatives take the Five Phases of the home palace as 'myself', and compare it with the Five Phases of each line's Earthly Branch: what is the same as me is Brothers; what generates me is Parents; what I generate is Children; what conquers me is Officer-Ghost; what I conquer is Wife-Wealth. The Qian and Dui palaces belong to Metal: a Metal line is Brothers, an Earth line is Parents, a Wood line is Wife-Wealth, a Fire line is Officer-Ghost, a Water line is Children. The Kan palace belongs to Water: a Water line is Brothers, a Fire line is Wife-Wealth, an Earth line is Officer-Ghost, a Metal line is Parents, a Wood line is Children. The Kun and Gen palaces belong to Earth: an Earth line is Brothers, a Fire line is Parents, a Wood line is Officer-Ghost, a Water line is Wife-Wealth, a Metal line is Children. The Zhen and Xun palaces belong to Wood: a Wood line is Brothers, a Water line is Parents, a Metal line is Officer-Ghost, a Fire line is Children, an Earth line is Wife-Wealth. The Li palace belongs to Fire: a Fire line is Brothers, a Water line is Officer-Ghost, an Earth line is Children, a Wood line is Parents, a Metal line is Wife-Wealth. The last six lines are the song of the Heavenly Yi Noble (天乙貴人): if the day's Heavenly Stem is Jia or Wu, a Chou (ox) or Wei (sheep) line is the Noble; on Yi or Ji days, Zi (rat) or Shen (monkey); on Bing or Ding days, Hai (pig) or You (rooster); on Ren or Gui days, Mao (rabbit) or Si (snake); on Geng or Xin days, Wu (horse) or Yin (tiger). These are the directions and line-positions where the Noble stands.

The Use Spirit

The Use Spirit is the line in the hexagram that stands for the matter asked; if the Use Spirit is taken wrongly, the whole reading is wrong. Whenever one divinates about heaven and earth, city walls, houses, boats and carts, clothes and bedding, letters, documents, contracts, schools, teachers, past affairs, wet-nurses, sworn uncles, the wife's elders, parents, grandfathers, uncles, aunts, and all persons of a generation above oneself, take the Parents line as the Use Spirit. Whenever one divinates about sons and daughters, sons-in-law, nephews, disciples, loyal ministers, physicians, medicines, monks and Daoists, soldiers and generals, the six domestic animals, birds, and all persons of a younger generation, take the Children line as the Use Spirit. The original note says: the Children line is the spirit of blessed virtue, and in whatever matter one asks, seeing it is auspicious; only when seeking rank and fame or when going to law is it taboo, because it conquers the Officer-Ghost, and the Officer-Ghost is precisely the Use Spirit of rank and of the official yamen.

Whenever one divinates about a wife, concubines and maidservants, hired labourers and runners, silver and jewels, storehouses and grain, vessels and utensils, and also about seeking wealth, collecting debts, and all persons and things at one's own disposal, take the Wife-Wealth line as the Use Spirit. Whenever one divinates about officials, the yamen, rank and fame, a wife asking about her husband, rebels, thieves, evil influences, thunder, ghosts and spirits, and lawsuits, take the Officer-Ghost line as the Use Spirit. Whenever one divinates about brothers, clan brothers, sworn elder brothers, brothers-in-law, and all persons of the same generation, take the Brothers line as the Use Spirit. The original note says: as soon as the Brothers line sees the Wife-Wealth line it seizes it, so whenever one divinates about money and goods it is the spirit that plunders wealth, and is most to be avoided.

Method of Casting a Hexagram · An Example

The method of raising a reading: throw the hexagram with three copper coins. Throwing one reverse face (and two character faces) is called 'single': it is young yang, and is marked as one dot '、'. Throwing two reverse faces is called 'broken': it is young yin, and is marked as two dots side by side '、、'. All three reverse faces is called 'heavy': it is old yang, and one draws a circle '0'. All three character faces is called 'crossing': it is old yin, and one marks a cross 'X'. Beginners who are marking hexagrams understand one dot and two dots easily; as soon as they see a circle or a cross they become confused, and must work it out with care. The rule is: a circle itself counts as one dot (a yang line), but a circle is a moving line, and when it moves it changes to yin, so in the changed hexagram it is used as two dots; a cross itself counts as two dots (a yin line), but a cross is a moving line, and when it moves it changes to yang, so in the changed hexagram it is used as one dot. This is the principle that 'the old change and the young do not'.

Now mark one hexagram as an example. This reading-form has three rows: the first row is the Six Relatives, the second is the Earthly Branches that have been fitted, the third is the line-marks together with Self and Response; the six positions from left to right are the first line through the top line. So it is to be read thus: the first three places, 'Children Mao, Officer-Ghost Chou, Brothers Hai', are the three lines of the inner trigram; the last three, 'Parents Shen, Officer-Ghost Xu, Brothers Zi', are the three lines of the outer trigram; the line-marks in order are one dot, two dots, a circle (holding the Self), a cross, a circle, and two dots (holding the Response). After changing the circle to one dot (yang) and the cross to two dots (yin), the inner trigram becomes Li—the Li trigram has a hollow line in the middle; the outer trigram becomes Kan—the Kan trigram has a solid line in the middle. In this hexagram water is above and fire below; the hexagram is named Water-and-Fire Jiji, After Completion. Next look at the moving lines: a circle is a moving line, and after it moves it becomes two dots (yin); a cross is a moving line, and after it moves it becomes one dot (yang). Movement produces change; the hexagram that changes out is named Thunder-and-Lake Guimei, Marrying Maiden. Beginners who are marking hexagrams should reason by this method; all later hexagrams follow the same pattern.

The Sixty-Four Hexagrams

The Eight Hexagrams of the Qian Palace

Qian is Heaven; the image-metaphor is 'a stranded dragon finding water'. The three rows of the reading-form are counted from left to right, from the first line to the top line: the six lines are fitted with Zi, Yin, Chen, Wu, Shen, Xu. The Qian palace belongs to Metal, so the Water line Zi is Children, the Wood line Yin is Wife-Wealth, the Earth lines Chen and Xu are Parents, the Fire line Wu is Officer-Ghost, and the Metal line Shen is Brothers. All six lines are yang lines (single dots); the Self line is at the top line, Xu Earth Parents, and the Response line is at the third line, Chen Earth Parents; Self and Response are both Parents and support each other by the same qi (氣). The Image verse says: the stranded dragon suddenly finds water, good fortune is just now joining, joy climbs unbidden to the brow, all plans go as hoped, and from here on fortune rises step by step. The poem says: this is a reading of great good fortune, and there is none who is not glad; elders are pleased at the sight, and no affair goes amiss. The judgment speaks by matter: in a lawsuit it is friendly to settle, and settlement is auspicious; the sick will recover; seeking rank and fame can succeed; planning and seeking wealth are greatly auspicious. When this reading is obtained, one should advance while the tide serves, and need not hesitate.

Heaven over Wind, Gou; the image-metaphor is 'meeting a friend in a strange land' (the name under the hexagram is written '地乡', a corruption of '他乡', a strange land). The inner Xun trigram is fitted with Chou, Hai, You; the outer Qian with Wu, Shen, Xu. The Qian palace belongs to Metal, so Chou Earth and Xu Earth are Parents, Hai Water is Children, You Metal and Shen Metal are Brothers, and Wu Fire is Officer-Ghost. The first line is broken (two dots, a yin line); the other five lines are all yang. This is the first-generation hexagram of the Qian palace; the Self line is at the first line, Chou Earth Parents, and the Response line is at the fourth line, Wu Fire Officer-Ghost. The Image verse says: meeting a friend in a strange land, the heart is full of joy; know that this is another layer of blessing added to one's fortune; from today one enters a smooth run of luck, and from here on there is sure to be no hindrance. The poem says: a bargain can be concluded, a lawsuit has right on its side, missing persons and things can be found, and going out there is a happy event. The judgment says: seeking rank and fame succeeds, the household is at peace, lost things can be found, and a divination about illness has no harm. This reading indicates help from outside; in all affairs one should borrow the strength of others.

Heaven over Mountain, Dun; the image-metaphor is 'thick clouds veiling the sun'. The inner Gen trigram is fitted with Chen, Wu, Shen; the outer Qian with Wu, Shen, Xu. The Qian palace belongs to Metal; Chen Earth and Xu Earth are Parents, Wu Fire is Officer-Ghost, Shen Metal is Brothers. The first and second lines are broken (yin); the upper four lines are yang. This is the second-generation hexagram of the Qian palace; the Self line is at the second line, Wu Fire Officer-Ghost, and the Response line is at the fifth line, Shen Metal Brothers. The Self occupies Officer-Ghost, which exactly matches the sense of 'when the Ghost line holds the Self, affairs are hard to settle'. The Image verse says: thick clouds cover the sun, the sky's light is not bright; I urge you by all means not to travel far; marriage and seeking wealth are both inauspicious, and one must also guard against disputes of the mouth and tongue coming to the door. The poem says: this month's fortune is not good, missing persons are hard to find, in trade one should only partner with others, and all affairs are flat and dull. The judgment says: in a divination about illness the sick person is not at ease, a lawsuit will go to court, rank and fame come only slowly, and matters will not go as hoped. Dun has the sense of withdrawal and retreat; this reading as a whole favours standing back and holding one's ground.

Heaven over Earth, Pi; the image-metaphor is 'a tiger fallen into a pit'. The inner Kun trigram is fitted with Wei, Si, Mao; the outer Qian with Wu, Shen, Xu. The Qian palace belongs to Metal; Wei Earth and Xu Earth are Parents, Si Fire and Wu Fire are Officer-Ghost, Mao Wood is Wife-Wealth, Shen Metal is Brothers. The three inner lines are all broken (yin), the three outer lines all single (yang); heaven and earth do not communicate, hence it is Pi, Obstruction. This is the third-generation hexagram of the Qian palace; the Self line is at the third line, Mao Wood Wife-Wealth, and the Response line is at the top line, Xu Earth Parents. The Image verse says: a tiger has fallen into a pit, the misery cannot be put into words; it is easy to go forward, hard to come back; the things one plans will not follow one's own wishes; illness and disputes tangle without end. The poem says: the missing are hard to find, a bargain is not settled, in marriage one may only talk of peace, and one must not move lightly. The judgment says: a divination about seeking wealth can in fact succeed (because the Self occupies Wife-Wealth), a noble person is travelling far, for oneself travel is not favourable, and all affairs come to completion only later.

Wind over Earth, Guan; the image-metaphor is 'parched tumbleweed meeting a river'—withered tumbling weeds that come upon river water. The inner Kun trigram is fitted with Wei, Si, Mao; the outer Xun with Wei, Si, Mao. The Qian palace belongs to Metal; Wei Earth is Parents, Si Fire is Officer-Ghost, Mao Wood is Wife-Wealth; the Six Relatives of the upper and lower three lines are the same. This is the fourth-generation hexagram of the Qian palace; the Self line is at the fourth line, Wei Earth Parents, and the Response line is at the first line, Wei Earth Parents. The Image verse says: the hexagram meets drought-weed that finds water; in trade and buying and selling the profit is ample; in marriage there will naturally be someone to help from within; going out one will never suffer hardship. The poem says: missing persons and things can be seen, disputes disperse, illnesses are all removed, and this month's fortune is truly good. The judgment says: in a lawsuit one has the right, in a divination about illness recovery is immediate, the letter one awaits will arrive, and plans go as hoped. This reading indicates withered wood returning to spring; those who have long been in difficulty, obtaining it, do best to advance.

Mountain over Earth, Bo; the image-metaphor is 'hawk and sparrow in the same wood'. The inner Kun trigram is fitted with Wei, Si, Mao; the outer Gen with Xu, Zi, Yin. The Qian palace belongs to Metal; Wei Earth and Xu Earth are Parents, Si Fire is Officer-Ghost, Mao Wood and Yin Wood are Wife-Wealth, Zi Water is Children. Only the top line is yang; the five lines below are all yin; yang qi is about to be exhausted, hence the name Bo, Splitting Apart. This is the fifth-generation hexagram of the Qian palace; the Self line is at the fifth line, Zi Water Children, and the Response line is at the second line, Si Fire Officer-Ghost. The Image verse says: a sparrow at nightfall goes into the wood to roost, not knowing that a hawk has long been living in that wood; though they occupy the same place, the other harbours malice; if a hexagram obtains this image, the matter is not a light one ('谁然' is for '虽然', although). The poem says: hawk and sparrow in the same wood are by nature incompatible; the one who obtains it meets many petty troubles; a benefactor turns ungrateful and becomes a foe; from level ground, waves of dispute arise out of nothing. The judgment says: first hard, then easy; plans are unfavourable; wait until the next solar term has been crossed, and sorrow will of itself turn to joy. This reading favours guarding against those close at hand; for the time being hold still and do not contend.

Fire over Earth, Jin; the image-metaphor is 'hoeing the ground and finding gold'. The inner Kun trigram is fitted with Wei, Si, Mao; the outer Li with You, Wei, Si. The Qian palace belongs to Metal; Wei Earth is Parents, Si Fire is Officer-Ghost, Mao Wood is Wife-Wealth, You Metal is Brothers. This is the wandering-soul hexagram of the Qian palace; the Self line is at the fourth line, You Metal Brothers, and the Response line is at the first line, Wei Earth Parents. The Image verse says: one went down to hoe the weeds from among the seedlings, and who would have thought that wealth itself would come looking; one stroke of the hoe turns up silver—this fortune may be counted as not bad. The poem says: what of this reading, hoeing the ground and finding gold? The one who obtains it has much joy; plans and requests all go as hoped; when the time turns, everything accords. The judgment says: for the moment it looks as if one can neither advance nor retreat, and even with right on one's side one dare not press hard; but it is like parting the dark clouds and seeing the sun, and it is just one's turn to come forward. This reading indicates an unexpected gain; one should do one's work in one's proper place, and wealth will come looking of itself.

Fire over Heaven, Dayou; the image-metaphor is 'felling the tree to take the sparrow'—cut the tree down first, then take the nest; sure and without loss. The inner Qian trigram is fitted with Zi, Yin, Chen; the outer Li with You, Wei, Si. The Qian palace belongs to Metal; Zi Water is Children, Yin Wood is Wife-Wealth, Chen Earth and Wei Earth are Parents, You Metal is Brothers, Si Fire is Officer-Ghost. This is the returning-soul hexagram of the Qian palace; the Self line is at the third line, Chen Earth Parents, and the Response line is at the top line, Si Fire Officer-Ghost. The Image verse says: fell the tree and then take the sparrow, and the work is sure; disputes of right and wrong dissolve of themselves; talking marriage to a peaceful close costs no effort; if one asks about the missing, the person or thing has not yet got away. The poem says: this reading, when obtained, has many good points; felling the tree to take the sparrow is the surest way; it comes to hand steadily and securely, while others can only look on and cannot touch it. The judgment says: when the mind is vague and hesitant, do not put out a hand; only when one has seen clearly should one strike steadily; if you seek name or profit, you can have your wish everywhere. This reading indicates moving only after the plan is set; in all affairs one should first plant a firm foundation.

The Eight Hexagrams of the Kan Palace

Kan is Water; the image-metaphor is 'scooping the moon from the riverbed'. The six lines from first to top are fitted with Yin, Chen, Wu, Shen, Xu, Zi. The Kan palace belongs to Water, so the Wood line Yin is Children, the Earth lines Chen and Xu are Officer-Ghost, the Fire line Wu is Wife-Wealth, the Metal line Shen is Parents, and the Water line Zi is Brothers. The second and fifth lines are yang; the other four are yin: the image of the Kan trigram doubled. The Self line is at the top line, Zi Water Brothers; the Response line is at the third line, Wu Fire Wife-Wealth. The Self occupies Brothers, which is precisely the spirit that seizes wealth, so seeking wealth is most unfavourable. The Image verse says: a full moon is mirrored in the water; one sees only the reflection and cannot scoop the thing itself; a fool takes it for money and goes down to fetch it, groping this way and that, and in the end it is all emptiness. The poem says: the moon on the riverbed must not be scooped; the one who obtains it has no high fortune; trade and travel are both hard to make convenient; of missing persons and things there is no news. The judgment says: seeking rank and fame does not succeed, illness is not yet healed, marriage does not come about, and even a peaceful settlement is unfavourable. This reading indicates the empty and insubstantial; in all affairs one must not take it as real.

The Kan palace belongs to Water; Si Fire is Wife-Wealth, Mao Wood is Children, Chou Earth and Xu Earth are Officer-Ghost, Shen Metal is Parents, Zi Water is Brothers. This is the first-generation hexagram of the Kan palace; the Self line is at the first line, Si Fire Wife-Wealth, and the Response line is at the fourth line, Shen Metal Parents. The Self occupies Wife-Wealth and receives generation from the Response line, Parents, above it, so seeking wealth is sure. The Image verse says: the time turns, joy arises at once; it is like Jiang Taigong mounting the platform to enfeoff the spirits; at this moment all the spirits yield their seats and listen, and even if there is misfortune it will not become a true inauspiciousness. The poem says: Taigong's enfeoffment of the spirits is no ordinary spectacle; plans and seeking wealth are as firm as Mount Tai; trade and peaceful settlement are both of great good fortune and celebration; illness and disputes are all removed, and one enjoys peace. The judgment says: this month's fortune is high and strong, one's name is greatly spread, of the missing there is news, and a lawsuit also has no harm. This reading indicates that once an order goes out, all affairs obey; one should decide while the moment serves.

This is the second-generation hexagram of the Kan palace; the Self line is at the second line, Yin Wood Children, and the Response line is at the fifth line, Xu Earth Officer-Ghost. Zhun is the image of the ten thousand things just born, circling and hard to advance. The Image verse says: the wind has blown a mass of silk into disorder, and one cannot find the end; affairs are topsy-turvy and breed worry; if one comes slowly and at ease, the heart is then at rest ('左顺心' is for '才顺心', only then is the heart at rest); if one hurries, one is instead nowhere one's own master. The poem says: tangled silk has no end, and is truly hard to sort; when one meets affairs that are none of one's business, put them aside for now; trade and travel have no good in them; plans and seeking wealth do not go as hoped. The judgment says: illness is not yet well, marriage is not opportune, disputes are petty and many, and work is done back to front. This reading favours slowness, not haste.

This is the third-generation hexagram of the Kan palace; the Self line is at the third line, Hai Water Brothers, and the Response line is at the top line, Zi Water Brothers. Water is above and fire below; water and fire communicate and each finds its use, hence the name Jiji, After Completion: of the sixty-four hexagrams it is the one whose line-positions are most properly placed. The Image verse says: one's own name is written on the golden list, and the hard study of those years is not in vain; to obtain this reading is a name of good fortune and celebration; all plans proceed with great smoothness ('富年' should be read as the years of one's youth). The poem says: the name on the golden list, joy made new; of ten who meet it, nine have their wish; you have now entered a smooth run of luck, and step by step you climb the examinations and rise. The judgment says: this month's fortune is already good, the person one seeks can be seen, the missing can be found, and disputes disperse of themselves.

Ge is the image of change and alteration. The Image verse says: the young grain meets a great drought and withers day by day; fortunately heaven sends down rain; sorrow goes and joy comes, and the situation can turn; plans and work all go as hoped. The poem says: parched shoots that receive rain grow lush and full ('芪堂堂' is for '气堂堂', describing vigorous growth); trade and seeking wealth also match; marriage and peaceful settlement both go as hoped; lawsuits and illness have no harm. The judgment says: travel is of great good fortune, the missing can be found, those who are away send word, and everything falls out luckily. This reading indicates blockage followed by opening; one should borrow the tide and make a new start.

Feng is the image of greatness and brightness. The Image verse says: an old mirror has been dim for many years; one morning it is polished bright, like the full moon; when a gentleman planning an affair obtains this reading, the time turns and joy comes of itself. The poem says: the old mirror is bright again, its light most plain; the master's fortune is even now turning; marriage and seeking wealth have much good fortune and celebration; the missing person has not yet gone far. The judgment says: travel is of benefit, in trade one can take the first place, illness gradually improves, and seeking rank and fame will certainly succeed. This reading indicates old matters coming to light again; one should put old work in order.

This is the wandering-soul hexagram of the Kan palace; the Self line is at the fourth line, Chou Earth Officer-Ghost, and the Response line is at the first line, Mao Wood Children. Mingyi is the image of brightness entering the earth, and of the worthy being wounded. The Image verse says: the time is contrary and fortune stumbles, and nowhere one goes is smooth ('运掘' is for fortune stumbling); in haste one crosses the river, and the bridge breaks; a person who had kindness turns ungrateful and becomes a foe; in all affairs one spends strength in vain and toils for nothing. The poem says: crossing the river and breaking the bridge, the matter wounds one deeply; trade and travel both have disaster; plans and seeking wealth waste one's strength; marriage and peaceful settlement also do not match. The judgment says: the one who is away has not yet arrived, the threads of the matter are not clear, when one meets disputes one should keep out of the way, and in all affairs one must take care. This reading favours hiding one's light and nourishing the dark; one must not display oneself.

The poem says: success as soon as the horse arrives, joy flying high; seeking name and taking profit are of great good fortune and prosperity; marriage and peaceful settlement have no hindrance ('和颗' is for a peaceful reading); trade and travel also go smoothly. The judgment says: illness is much better, the missing can be found, those who are away send word, and everything falls out luckily. This reading indicates success at a single stroke; one should raise all forces together.

The Eight Hexagrams of the Gen Palace

Gen is Mountain; the image-metaphor is 'a short man reaching for dates'—a short person trying to reach the dates, and the branch always a stretch too far. The six lines from first to top are fitted with Chen, Wu, Shen, Xu, Zi, Yin. The Gen palace belongs to Earth, so the Earth lines Chen and Xu are Brothers, the Fire line Wu is Parents, the Metal line Shen is Children, the Water line Zi is Wife-Wealth, and the Wood line Yin is Officer-Ghost. The third and top lines are yang; the rest are yin. The Self line is at the top line, Yin Wood Officer-Ghost; the Response line is at the third line, Shen Metal Children. The Self occupies Officer-Ghost, so affairs are often unsettled. The Image verse says: wealth constantly turns in the heart, yet sadly it will not come to hand before one's eyes; when things do not go as hoped, one must be patient; when one meets affairs that are none of one's business, do not open the mouth. The poem says: a short man reaching for dates cannot grasp the branch; trade and seeking people both miss their mark; plans and seeking wealth cost the most strength; marriage and peaceful settlement in the end come to nothing. The judgment says: good things are piled there one upon another, yet for the moment one cannot reach them; in all affairs one must be cautious, and in dealings with others one will naturally be at peace. This reading indicates that the time has not yet come; one should wait and hold.

Mountain over Fire, Bi; the image-metaphor is 'joy filling the gate' ('喷' is a corruption of Bi, 賁). The inner Li trigram is fitted with Mao, Chou, Hai; the outer Gen with Xu, Zi, Yin. The Gen palace belongs to Earth; Mao Wood and Yin Wood are Officer-Ghost, Chou Earth and Xu Earth are Brothers, Hai Water and Zi Water are Wife-Wealth. This is the first-generation hexagram of the Gen palace; the Self line is at the first line, Mao Wood Officer-Ghost, and the Response line is at the fourth line, Xu Earth Brothers. Bi is the image of adornment. The Image verse borrows the opening of the Book of Songs, 'Guanju': the time turns, and keen spirit is complete; the modest, retiring, virtuous young lady—for her the gentleman seeks; when bells and drums make music, that is precisely great good fortune and celebration; the one who obtains it has a happy event come upon his head. The poem says: this reading has an auspicious spirit in the run of luck; even if an inauspicious image appears, it will not become a true inauspiciousness; marriage and peaceful settlement gradually turn better; business and sources of wealth grow day by day. The judgment says: travel is auspicious, household affairs have no harm ('安事' is household matters), lost things can be seen, and this month's fortune is high and strong.

Mountain over Heaven, Daxu; the image-metaphor is 'the battle-array opening'. The inner Qian trigram is fitted with Zi, Yin, Chen; the outer Gen with Xu, Zi, Yin. The Gen palace belongs to Earth; Zi Water is Wife-Wealth, Yin Wood is Officer-Ghost, Chen Earth and Xu Earth are Brothers. This is the second-generation hexagram of the Gen palace; the Self line is at the second line, Yin Wood Officer-Ghost, and the Response line is at the fifth line, Zi Water Wife-Wealth. Daxu is the image of storing virtue and waiting to issue. The Image verse says: formerly worry constantly locked the two brows, and a thousand threads hung upon the heart; from this day on the array opens, and one may act as one will, with nothing more to bind one. The poem says: this hexagram, when obtained, carries the Six Combinations (六合) (the auspicious image of Earthly Branches pairing two by two); illness and disputes are gradually worn away; marriage and peaceful settlement both go as hoped; plans and seeking wealth have no error. The judgment says: the one who is away has been handed back, going out is of great good fortune, good luck has news, and a hundred affairs are peaceable. This reading indicates that after long accumulation one at last deploys.

Mountain over Lake, Sun; the image-metaphor is 'pushing a cart with a dropped linchpin'—pushing a cart along a mountain road, and the linchpin (the pin on the axle) has fallen out. The inner Dui trigram is fitted with Si, Mao, Chou; the outer Gen with Xu, Zi, Yin. The Gen palace belongs to Earth; Si Fire is Parents, Mao Wood and Yin Wood are Officer-Ghost, Chou Earth and Xu Earth are Brothers, Zi Water is Wife-Wealth. This is the third-generation hexagram of the Gen palace; the Self line is at the third line, Chou Earth Brothers, and the Response line is at the top line, Yin Wood Officer-Ghost. The Self occupies Brothers, which indicates the wasting of wealth. The Image verse says: the time has not arrived, and much thought is spent in vain; it is like pushing a cart and suffering torment; the mountain road is rough, the linchpin has dropped, and whether one inserts it on the left or fits it on the right it will not stay. The poem says: pushing a cart with a dropped linchpin, the road is hard to travel; the heart has a plan, but strength cannot keep up; when a gentleman obtains this petty, troublesome hexagram, even if there is no disaster he cannot escape hardship. The judgment says: fortune does not go as hoped, do not act at random; after the month has been handed over and changed, one will naturally take the first place.

Fire over Lake, Kui; the image-metaphor is 'trafficking in pigs and sheep'. The inner Dui trigram is fitted with Si, Mao, Chou; the outer ought to be the Li palace's You, Wei, Si, but the base text lists Wei, Si, Mao, which is corrupt, and the Six Relatives go wrong with it; the reader should take the correct Najia method as standard. The Gen palace belongs to Earth; Si Fire is Parents, Mao Wood is Officer-Ghost, Chou Earth and Wei Earth are Brothers. This is the fourth-generation hexagram of the Gen palace; the Self line is at the fourth line, the Response line at the first line. Kui is the image of opposition and parting. The Image verse says: this reading, when obtained, has bad fortune, like Jiang Taigong doing trade and missing the season at every turn: when one traffics in pigs the pig price falls fast; when one switches to sheep one is already too late; when one traffics in pigs and sheep together, one happens upon a ban on slaughter. The poem says: trafficking in pigs and sheep, fortune does not go as hoped; if one divinates about a traveller, he is not seen to return; trade and travel have no good in them; marriage and seeking wealth must on no account be undertaken. The judgment says: seeking name is unfavourable, seeking profit is incomplete, illness is not healed, and work is hard. This reading indicates the two sides at odds; one should hold still.

Heaven over Lake, Lü; the image-metaphor is 'a phoenix crying on Mount Qi' ('覆' is a corruption of Lü, 履; '风' is a corruption of phoenix, 鳳). The inner Dui trigram is fitted with Si, Mao, Chou; the outer Qian with Wu, Shen, Xu. The Gen palace belongs to Earth; Si Fire and Wu Fire are Parents, Mao Wood is Officer-Ghost, Chou Earth and Xu Earth are Brothers, Shen Metal is Children. This is the fifth-generation hexagram of the Gen palace; the Self line is at the fifth line, Shen Metal Children, and the Response line is at the second line, Mao Wood Officer-Ghost. The Image verse uses the rise of the house of Zhou: a phoenix alighted on the mountain of western Qi, cried a few times, and a sage appeared; heaven sent down King Wen of Zhou to found the enterprise, and the Zhou house had wealth, honour, and splendour for eight hundred years. The poem says: a phoenix on Mount Qi, its voice heard in the four quarters; the one who obtains it has great good fortune and prosperity; of the missing there is news; in business and in peaceful settlement one enters the land of wealth. The judgment says: travel is of benefit, seeking wealth is sure to be accurate, illnesses are all removed, and all affairs are steady. This reading indicates an auspicious omen seen first, and a noble person about to appear.

The Gen palace belongs to Earth; Si Fire is Parents, Mao Wood is Officer-Ghost, Chou Earth and Wei Earth are Brothers. This is the wandering-soul hexagram of the Gen palace; the Self line is at the fourth line, Wei Earth Brothers, and the Response line is at the first line, Si Fire Parents. Zhongfu is the image of trust within, yet this reading takes from it the warning of standing over an abyss. The Image verse says: travellers on the road are in a great hurry; they are rushing and there is no bridge, so they must cross on thin ice; if they are careful they can still get over; one slip and they fall into the water. The poem says: the traveller treads the ice and fears the ice is thin; trade and travel both need a spell of pondering; in marriage and peaceful settlement one must not be careless; lawsuits and disputes need to be closed by peace. The judgment says: thin ice is truly dangerous, yet the traveller can hardly be forbidden to go; when a gentleman obtains this reading, in all affairs he must be careful.

Wind over Mountain, Jian; the image-metaphor is 'a fine horse leaving its cage'. The inner Gen trigram is fitted with Chen, Wu, Shen; the outer Xun with Wei, Si, Mao. The Gen palace belongs to Earth; Chen Earth and Wei Earth are Brothers, Wu Fire and Si Fire are Parents, Shen Metal is Children, Mao Wood is Officer-Ghost. This is the returning-soul hexagram of the Gen palace; the Self line is at the third line, Shen Metal Children, and the Response line is at the top line, Mao Wood Officer-Ghost; the Children line holds the Self, so all affairs are without worry. Jian is the image of advancing in due order. The Image verse says: a fine horse luckily leaves its cage, escapes disaster, and shows its might; one morning it has its way, and the force of blessing comes of itself; east, south, west, and north, it gallops as it will. The poem says: a fine horse leaving its cage, a run of ten thousand li; trade and travel are of great good fortune and prosperity; seeking a person, though it costs effort, is very good for taking refuge; lawsuits and illness have no hindrance. The judgment says: a peaceful settlement goes as hoped, a move of house goes as the heart wishes, trade flourishes, and seeking wealth is complete. This reading indicates turning from difficulty to opening; it is favourable to travel far and to move.

The Eight Hexagrams of the Zhen Palace

Zhen is Thunder; the image-metaphor is 'a golden bell struck at night' ('憧' is a corruption of '撞', to strike). The six lines from first to top are fitted with Zi, Yin, Chen, Wu, Shen, Xu. The Zhen palace belongs to Wood, so the Water line Zi is Parents, the Wood line Yin is Brothers, the Earth lines Chen and Xu are Wife-Wealth, the Fire line Wu is Children, and the Metal line Shen is Officer-Ghost. The first and fourth lines are yang; the rest are yin. The Self line is at the top line, Xu Earth Wife-Wealth; the Response line is at the third line, Chen Earth Wife-Wealth. The Self occupies Wife-Wealth, so seeking wealth has hope. The Image verse says: a golden bell is buried in the silt, and everyone takes it for a plaything of stone ('那着' is for taking it in the hand); suddenly one day the bell is hung up, it is struck with a ringing sound, and all under heaven know of it. The poem says: the one who obtains this bell that sounds at night, the time turns and one sound startles; plans and seeking wealth cost no effort; trade and travel have great effect. The judgment says: seeking name goes as intended, work follows the heart, and of the missing there is naturally news. This reading indicates talent held in readiness and then used, and startling the world with a single cry.

Thunder over Earth, Yu; the image-metaphor is 'the Green Dragon obtaining its place'. The inner Kun trigram is fitted with Wei, Si, Mao; the outer Zhen with Wu, Shen, Xu. The Zhen palace belongs to Wood; Wei Earth and Xu Earth are Wife-Wealth, Si Fire and Wu Fire are Children, Mao Wood is Brothers, Shen Metal is Officer-Ghost. This is the first-generation hexagram of the Zhen palace; the Self line is at the first line, Wei Earth Wife-Wealth, and the Response line is at the fourth line, Wu Fire Children; Children generate Wife-Wealth, so the source of wealth has a root. Yu is the image of harmony, joy, and compliant movement. The Image verse uses a story from the Investiture of the Gods: Jiang Taigong planted the apricot-yellow banner, subdued demons as disciples, and together they returned to western Qi; from then on this auspicious spirit, the Green Dragon (青龍), each obtained its place, and all plans and a hundred affairs are favourable. The poem says: the Green Dragon obtains its place, auspicious qi is born again; plans and seeking wealth both have achievement; marriage and travel have no blockage; disputes of right and wrong return to peace. The judgment says: a bargain can be concluded, the one who is away returns at once, going to seek patronage can succeed, and a peaceful settlement also has no loss. Note: the base text of the sixty-four hexagrams records only up to this hexagram; the hexagrams that follow are already missing.
