Ascending the hall he brought up the wild fox case and said, 'Not falling, not obscuring—that is to accuse a man falsely. Not obscuring, not falling—that is to bind oneself without a rope. Pitiable are the willow catkins that follow the spring wind; sometimes they go from west and again from east.'

He was a man of Tongchuan. Ascending the hall: 'At the time of seeing, the seeing is not seeing; seeing still departs from seeing, and seeing cannot reach it.' Then he gave a shout and said, 'The whale swallows all the sea water and reveals the coral branch. If a patch-robed monk in the assembly suddenly comes forward and says, 'Elder, stop talking in your sleep,' he may be allowed to have one eye.' Ascending the hall, he held his staff crosswise and said, 'One, two, three, four, five, six, seven; seven, six, five, four, three, two, one. Counting them in cycle, forward and back, one counts to the endless day of the future. Because of seven one sees one; because of one seven perishes. Trampling through the great void, even the iron ox sweats. Breath cut off, no trace.' He threw down the staff and said, 'You must further put this down, and only then is the matter of study finished.' Ascending the hall, he picked up his staff and said, 'Sometimes I take away the man and not the object—then the staff goes seven ways across and eight ways about. Sometimes I take away the object and not the man—then this mountain monk is seven times upside down and eight times reversed. Sometimes I take away both man and object—then the staff and this mountain monk wipe out their traces and swallow their voices. Sometimes I take away neither man nor object.' He set down the staff and said, 'It accompanies me a thousand leagues; it carries you across ten thousand mountains.' Suddenly meeting Great Master Linji—what then?' He gave a shout and said, 'If the mind-ground's seal is not clear, it is hard to pass the Patriarch's barrier.'
