A monk asked what it was to make one seal upon space. The master said, “The myriad forms return to the ancient mirror.” Asked what it was to seal water, he said, “The autumn moon’s shadow falls in a thousand rivers.” Asked what it was to seal mud, he said, “Look closely at the moment before patterns arise.”

A native of the prefecture. In the hall he said: “Dragons beget dragons, phoenixes beget phoenixes; mice raise their young along roof beams. Master Bodhidharma knew no Chan—traveling through Wei and Liang, he only made a noisy commotion.” He continued: “In the first and second nine-day periods, people meet without offering a hand. In the third nine, twenty-seven, someone plays a reed pipe by the fence. I recall the little Shakyamuni, holding his knees with both hands. Do you know? Is it real? Maha prajna paramita.” Another sermon: “Vimalakirti was silent; Samantabhadra spoke at length. Sages of every age took turns displaying their clumsy skill. Don’t you see? In the third month, cuckoos cry among falling flowers; each call is a drop of blood.” He also said: “Wind whistles, leaves flutter; clouds drift, waters stretch vast. Standing alone on the riverbank, to whom can I speak? Two or three wild geese fly beyond the sky.”

A native of Zhangzhou in Xinzhou, born to the Zhang family. He studied with Master Cheng of Letan, shared the teaching seat, and became renowned in many regions. Once he traveled to the western hills with Chan Master Yue of Yunfeng and discussed Yunmen’s teaching at night. Yue said, “Though Master Cheng comes after Yunmen, his Dharma is different. Yunmen was like an alchemical elixir that turns iron into gold. Master Cheng’s medicine is mercury-silver: pleasing to look at, but it runs off in the furnace.” Huinan angrily threw a pillow at him. The next day Yue apologized and continued: “Yunmen had a kingly presence. Would you be content with dead words? Master Cheng has a Dharma he transmits, but it is dead words. Can dead words bring anyone to life?” He turned to leave. Huinan held him and asked whom Yue approved. Yue said, “Yuan of Shishuang surpasses others in skill; you should see him and not lag behind.” Huinan thought, “If Master Yue of Cuiyan sends me to see Shishuang, what does Yue gain?” and went to visit Yuan. On the way, he heard that Ciming was unruly and had thrown the monastery into confusion. He climbed Mount Heng and visited Xian of Fuyan, who made him record keeper. Xian soon died, and the prefect appointed Ciming to replace him. When Ciming arrived, Huinan saw him disparage teachers everywhere, dismissing each as heretical, and lost confidence. He went to Ciming’s room. Ciming said, “As record keeper, you lead students on their travels. If you have doubts, sit down and discuss them.” Huinan pleaded all the more earnestly. Ciming said, “You study Yunmen Chan, so you surely know its meaning. When Yunmen said Dongshan should receive three blows, did Dongshan deserve them or not?” Huinan said he did. Ciming sat upright and said, “From morning to night, magpies caw and crows cry; all deserve blows.” Ciming sat still as Huinan offered incense and bowed. Ciming then asked where Zhaozhou had exposed the old woman in the story of the woman at Mount Wutai. Huinan sweated but could not answer. He returned the next day, and Ciming cursed him repeatedly. Huinan said, “Is scolding a compassionate gift of Dharma?” Ciming asked, “Do you understand scolding that way?” At those words Huinan awakened. He composed a verse: “Zhaozhou stands out among the monasteries; exposing the old woman had no reason. Now the four seas are clear as a mirror; travelers, do not make an enemy of the road.” He presented it to Ciming, who nodded. Later Huinan opened a teaching hall at Tong’an. On the day he accepted the invitation, Letan sent a monk to ask about his teaching. Huinan said: “The ocean of wisdom has no nature; delusion arises from awakening, making ordinary beings. Delusion is originally empty: in the ordinary mind, see Buddha. Stop there, and you will think Tong’an has no capacity to assess you; follow your own reversals and desires. The Southern Dipper has seven stars, the Northern Dipper eight.” The monk returned and reported this to Cheng, who was displeased. Their former friendship ended. Asked what their shared teaching was, Huinan remained silent. The monk said he had disturbed the master; Huinan replied, “It is hard to find an alert person.” He instructed the assembly: “In Jiangnan, spring is cold and autumn hot. Recently even a drop of water freezes.” A monk asked what it was when each drop froze. The master said, “That is not yet the monk’s matter.” Asked what was, he said, “Each drop freezes.”

A Chan master and his teaching.
