The Lankavatara Sutra
云何為斷見，及常見不生？
What is the view of annihilation, and the view of permanence not arising?
云何佛外道，其相不相違？
How is it that the Buddha and the outsiders have marks that do not conflict?
云何當來世，種種諸異部？
Why in future ages will there be various different schools?
云何空何因？云何剎那壞？
What is emptiness, and what is its cause? How do things break up in an instant?
云何胎藏生？云何世不動？
How is the womb-storehouse born? How does the world not move?
何因如幻夢，及揵闥婆城，
By what cause are things like illusions, like dreams, and the Gandharva city (a city that appears by illusion),
世間熱時炎，及與水月光？
like the heat-shimmer in the world's hot season, and the moonlight in water?
何因說覺支，及與菩提分？
By what cause are the limbs of awakening spoken of, and the factors of bodhi?
云何國土亂？云何作有見？
How are lands disordered? How does the view of existence arise?
云何不生滅，世如虛空華？
How is there no arising or ceasing, the world like flowers in the sky?
云何覺世間？云何說離字？
How is the world awakened? How is it said to be free of words?
離妄想者誰？云何虛空譬？
Who is free of false thinking? How is space used as a simile?
如實有幾種？幾波羅蜜心？
How many kinds of suchness-body are there? How many kinds of paramita minds?
何因度諸地？誰至無所受？
By what cause are the stages crossed? Who arrives at non-reception?
何等二無我？云何爾炎淨？
What are the two no-selves? How is the knowable purified?
諸智有幾種？幾戒眾生性？
How many kinds of wisdom are there? How many kinds of precepts and natures of beings?
誰生諸寶性，摩尼真珠等？
Who gives birth to the natures of jewels, mani, pearls and the like?
誰生諸語言，眾生種種性？
Who gives birth to all languages and the various natures of beings?
明處及伎術，誰之所顯示？
The fields of learning and the arts and skills, by whom are they shown?
伽陀有幾種，長頌及短頌？
How many kinds of gatha are there, long verses and short verses?
成為有幾種？云何名為論？
How many kinds of composition are there? What is called a treatise?
云何生飲食，及生諸愛欲？
How are food and drink produced, and how are all loves and desires born?
云何名為王，轉輪及小王？
What is called a king, a wheel-turning king and a lesser king?
云何守護國？諸天有幾種？
How is the state guarded? How many kinds of gods are there?
云何名為地，星宿及日月？
What is called the earth, the constellations, and sun and moon?
解脫修行者，是各有幾種？
How many kinds are there of the liberated and of those who practice?
弟子有幾種？云何阿闍梨？
How many kinds of disciples are there? What is an acharya (a teacher of rules)?
佛復有幾種？復有幾種生？
How many kinds of Buddhas are there? And how many kinds of births?
魔及諸異學，彼各有幾種？
Of demons and the various other teachers, how many kinds does each have?
自性及與心，彼復各幾種？
Of self-nature and mind, how many kinds does each have?
云何施設量？唯願最勝說。
What is established measure? I beg the Most Excellent to explain.
云何空風雲？云何念聰明？
What are space, wind and clouds? What are thought and keen intelligence?
云何為林樹？云何為蔓草？
What are forests and trees? What are creeping vines?
云何象馬鹿？云何而捕取？
What are elephants, horses and deer? How are they caught?
云何為卑陋？何因而卑陋？
What is lowliness? By what cause is there lowliness?
云何六師攝？云何一闡提？
How do the six teachers gather in followers? What is an icchantika (one who has cut off roots of goodness)?
男女及不男，斯皆云何生？
Men, women and the neither, how are all these born?
云何修行退？云何修行生？
How does practice regress? How does practice arise?
禪師以何法，建立何等人？
By what method does a meditation master establish what kind of person?
眾生生諸趣，何相何像類？
When beings are born in the various destinies, what marks and what likenesses do they have?
云何為財富？何因致財富？
What is wealth? By what cause is wealth obtained?
云何為釋種？何因有釋種？
What is the Shakya clan? By what cause is there a Shakya clan?
云何甘蔗種？無上尊願說。
What is the sugarcane lineage? May the Unsurpassed Honored One speak.
云何長苦仙？彼云何教授？
What is the Long-Austerity Sage? How do they teach?
如來云何於，一切時剎現，
How does the Tathagata appear at all times and in all lands,
種種名色類，最勝子圍遶？
with various names and forms and kinds, surrounded by the most excellent sons?
云何不食肉？云何制斷肉？
Why is meat not eaten? How was the cutting off of meat established?
食肉諸種類，何因故食肉？
Of the various kinds of meat-eaters, by what causes and conditions do they eat meat?
云何日月形，須彌及蓮華，
What is the shape of the sun and moon, of Mount Sumeru, and of the lotus flower,
師子勝相剎，側住覆世界，
the lands with the form of a victorious lion, lying on their side or covering the world,
如因陀羅網，或悉諸珍寶，
like Indra's net, or entirely of precious jewels,
箜篌細腰鼓，狀種種諸華，
the konghou harp and the narrow-waisted drum, shaped like various flowers,
或離日月光，如是等無量？
or lands without the light of sun and moon, and so on without number?
云何為化佛？云何報生佛？
What is the transformation Buddha? What is the reward-body Buddha?
云何如如佛？云何智慧佛？
What is the suchness Buddha? What is the wisdom Buddha?
云何於欲界，不成等正覺？
Why in the desire realm is perfect enlightenment not attained?
何故色究竟，離欲得菩提？
Why in the Akanistha heaven (the highest of the form realm), free from desire, is bodhi attained?
善逝般涅槃，誰當持正法？
After the Well-Gone One has entered parinirvana, who should uphold the true Dharma?
天師住久如，正法幾時住？
How long will the Teacher of Gods remain, and how long will the true Dharma remain?
悉檀及與見，各復有幾種？
Of siddhanta (doctrinal tenets) and views, how many kinds does each have?
