The Lotus Sutra of the Wonderful Dharma

Later Qin (姚秦) · translated by Jiu Moluoshen (鳩摩羅什譯) · Volume 12 / 48

The Buddha, wishing to restate this meaning, spoke in verse:

"Suppose there is an elder, who has a great house, and this house is old,

And moreover worn down, its halls high and precarious, the bases of its pillars broken and rotten,

Its beams and ridgepoles leaning, its foundations and steps collapsed, its walls cracked and split,

The plaster fallen off, the thatch dropping in disorder, the rafters and eaves coming loose,

The surrounding enclosure bent and crooked, filled everywhere with filth. There are five hundred people

Living in it. Owls, eagles, vultures, crows, magpies, doves, and pigeons,

Lizards, snakes, vipers, scorpions, centipedes, millipedes, geckos, and hundred-leggers,

Weasels, civets, mice, and all manner of evil creatures run crisscross.

In the foul places of dung and urine, impurities overflow, and dung beetles and insects

Gather on it. Foxes, wolves, and jackals chew and trample,

Gnawing and biting corpses, with bones and flesh scattered about. Because of this, packs of dogs

Race to snatch and seize, gaunt with hunger and panicked, searching everywhere for food.

They fight and tug, snarl and howl and bark; the house is frightening,

Its transformations like this. Everywhere there are mountain sprites, water demons,

Yakshas, and evil ghosts, who eat human flesh. Poisonous insects of all kinds,

And evil birds and beasts, hatch and suckle their young, each hiding and guarding them.

The yakshas come racing, fighting to take and eat them, and having eaten their fill,

Their evil hearts blaze the more, and the sound of their fighting is most terrifying.

The kumbhanda ghosts squat on mounds of earth, and sometimes rise off the ground

A foot or two, going to and fro, roaming and playing without restraint,

Seizing a dog by its two legs and slamming it down so that it loses its voice, setting a foot on its neck,

Frightening the dog for their own amusement. There are also ghosts with huge bodies,

Naked, black, and gaunt, always dwelling there, uttering great evil cries,

Calling out and begging for food. There are also ghosts whose throats are like needles.

There are also ghosts with heads like oxen, who either eat human flesh,

Or devour dogs, with disheveled hair, cruel and fierce and dangerous,

Driven by hunger and thirst, shouting and running about. The yakshas and hungry ghosts,

And the evil birds and beasts, ravenous in all directions, peer through the windows.

Such are its dangers, its terrors are immeasurable. This decayed old house

Belongs to one man. That man has gone out only recently, and not long after,

In the house behind, a fire suddenly breaks out, on all four sides at once,

Its flames all blazing. The beams, ridgepoles, rafters, and pillars crack with roaring sounds,

Break and fall down, and the walls collapse. The ghosts and spirits

Raise their voices in great cries. Eagles, vultures, and other birds, and the kumbhandas,

Run about in panic, unable to get out. Evil beasts and poisonous insects

Hide in holes and crevices. The pishacha ghosts also live there,

Being of thin merit and virtue, pressed by the fire, they harm one another,

Drinking blood and eating flesh. The jackals and the like had already died earlier,

And great evil beasts race to devour them; foul smoke billows,

Filling all four sides. Centipedes, millipedes, poisonous snakes and the like,

Burned by the fire, scramble out of their holes, and the kumbhanda ghosts

Seize and eat them. And the hungry ghosts, with fire burning on their heads,

Hungry, thirsty, hot, and tormented, run about in confusion. The house is like this,

Most frightening, with poison, harm, and fire disaster, its dangers not just one.

At this time the master of the house, standing outside the gate, hears someone say:

'Your sons earlier, while at play, came into this house,

Young and without understanding, delighting in their amusement.' When the elder hears this,

He rushes into the burning house, intending to rescue them so they are not burned or harmed.

He warns his sons, telling of the many dangers, the evil ghosts and poisonous insects,

The spreading fire, the many sufferings in succession, following one another without end.

Poisonous snakes and vipers, the yakshas, and the kumbhanda ghosts,

Jackals, foxes, dogs, eagles, vultures, owls, hundred-leggers and the like,

Hungry, thirsty, and in agitation, most terrifying. This place of suffering and hardship,

How much more the great fire. The sons are ignorant and, though they hear their father's admonition,

Still are attached to their pleasure and keep playing without stopping. Then the elder

Has this thought: 'My sons are like this, which adds to my sorrow and vexation.

Now in this house there is not one thing to enjoy, yet my sons

Are immersed in play and do not accept my teaching, and will be harmed by the fire.'

He then reflects and devises skillful means, and tells his sons:
