Guo Feng (Airs of the States)
禮儀既備，鐘鼓既戒，孝孫徂位，工祝致告，神具醉止，皇屍載起。
The rites are complete, the bells and drums are ready, the filial descendant goes to his seat, the invoker makes his announcement, the spirits are drunk, and the august impersonator then rises.
鼓鍾送屍，神保聿歸。諸宰君婦，廢徹不遲。諸父兄弟，備言燕私。
The bells are struck to send off the impersonator, and the spirit protector then returns. The various cooks and the lady of the house clear the mats without delay. The uncles and brothers all say they will hold a private feast.
樂具入奏，以綏後祿。爾餚既將，莫怨具慶。既醉既飽，小大稽首。
The instruments all enter to play, to soothe the blessings to come. Your dishes have been served, and there is no resentment, all celebrate together. Already drunk and already full, young and old bow their heads.
神嗜飲食，使君壽考。孔惠孔時，維其盡之。子子孫孫，勿替引之！
The spirits love these foods and drinks, and make our lord live long. All is smooth and timely, only because he has fulfilled the rites. Sons and grandsons, do not let it lapse, but prolong it!
信彼南山，維禹甸之。畇畇原隰，曾孫田之。我疆我理，南東其畝。
The stretching Southern Mountain was put in order by Yu. The plains and lowlands lie flat and even, and the great-grandson cultivates them. I mark out boundaries and manage them, the fields running south and east.
上天同雲。雨雪雰雰，益之以霢霂。既優既渥，既沾既足。生我百穀。
Heaven makes the clouds all alike. Rain and snow fall thick, with a light drizzle added. The fields are well soaked and moistened, all wet and sufficient. It makes our hundred grains grow.
疆埸翼翼，黍稷彧彧。曾孫之穡，以為酒食。畀我屍賓，壽考萬年。
The field boundaries are neat and orderly, the millet and sorghum lush. The great-grandson's harvest is made into wine and food. It is given to my impersonator and guests, for long life of ten thousand years.
中田有廬，疆埸有瓜。是剝是菹，獻之皇祖。曾孫壽考，受天之祜。
In the fields there are huts, and on the field borders there are melons. They are cut up and pickled, and offered to the august ancestor. The great-grandson lives long and receives Heaven's blessing.
祭以清酒，從以騂牡，享於祖考。執其鸞刀，以啟其毛，取其血膋。
With clear wine we sacrifice, following the red bull, and offer it to our ancestors. Taking the bell-hung knife, we open up its hair and take out its blood and fat.
是烝是享，苾苾芬芬。祀事孔明，先祖是皇。報以介福。萬壽無疆。
Then they are presented and offered, fragrant and sweet. The sacrificial affairs are clear and complete, and the ancestors then arrive. Great blessings are returned: ten thousand years of life without limit.
倬彼甫田，歲取十千。我取其陳，食我農人。自古有年。
The vast Fu field yields ten thousand each year. I take the old grain and feed my farmers. Since ancient times there have been abundant years.
今適南畝，或耘或耔。黍稷薿薿，攸介攸止，烝我髦士。
Now going to the southern fields, some weed and some hoe up earth to the roots. The millet and sorghum are thick and lush, then grow tall and then ripen, and are presented to my outstanding men.
以我齊明，與我犧羊，以社以方。我田既臧，農夫之慶。
With my clean millet and sorghum and my sacrificial sheep, we sacrifice to the earth and to the four quarters. My fields are in good condition, and it is the farmers' joy.
琴瑟擊鼓，以御田祖。以祈甘雨，以介我稷黍，以谷我士女。
With zither and se and beaten drums we welcome the Ancestor of the Fields. We pray for sweet rain, to help my sorghum and millet, and to feed my men and women.
曾孫來止，以其婦子。饁彼南畝，田畯至喜。攘其左右，
The great-grandson comes, with his wife and children. They bring meals to the southern fields, and the field officer comes and is glad. He takes up some from left and right,
嘗其旨否。禾易長畝，終善且有。曾孫不怒，農夫克敏。
and tastes whether it is good. The crops are tended and fill the fields, and in the end it is good and plentiful. The great-grandson is not angry, and the farmers are able to be quick.
曾孫之稼，如茨如梁。曾孫之庾，如坻如京。乃求千斯倉，
The great-grandson's crops are like thatch and like bridges. The great-grandson's open stores are like islets and high hills. So he asks for a thousand granaries,
乃求萬斯箱。黍稷稻粱，農夫之慶。報以介福，萬壽無疆。
and so he asks for ten thousand cart-beds. Millet, sorghum, rice and fine grain are the farmers' joy. Great blessings are returned: ten thousand years of life without limit.
大田多稼，既種既戒，既備乃事。以我覃耜，俶載南畝。
The great field has many crops, the seed has been chosen and the preparations made, and the work is complete. With my sharp plowshare, they begin to work the southern fields.
播厥百穀，既庭且碩，曾孫是若。
They sow the hundred grains; they are both straight and plump, and the great-grandson is pleased because of it.
既方既皂，既堅既好，不稂不莠。去其螟螣，及其蟊賊，
They have put out ears and formed husks, they are firm and fine, with no wolf's-tail grass and no weeds. Remove the stem-borers and the leaf-eaters, and the root-cutters and thieves,
無害我田稚。田祖有神，秉畀炎火。
and do not harm the young shoots in my fields. The Ancestor of the Fields has spirit; take them and hand them over to the blazing fire.
有渰萋萋，興雨祈祈。雨我公田，遂及我私。彼有不獲稚，
Dark clouds gather thick, and the rain comes slow and gentle. It falls on my public field, and then also reaches my private field. Over there are young stalks not yet gathered,
此有不斂穧，彼有遺秉，此有滯穗，伊寡婦之利。
here are sheaves not yet collected, over there are sheaves left behind, here are ears left lying; these are for the widow's benefit.
曾孫來止，以其婦子。饁彼南畝，田畯至喜。來方禋祀，
The great-grandson comes, with his wife and children. They bring meals to the southern fields, and the field officer comes and is glad. They come to sacrifice to the four quarters, to make the pure offering,
以其騂黑，與其黍稷。以享以祀，以介景福。
with the red ox and the black pig, and that millet and sorghum. They are used to offer in sacrifice, to seek great blessings.
瞻彼洛矣，維水泱泱。君子至止，福祿如茨。韎韐有奭，以作六師。
Looking at the Luo River, its waters wide and broad. The gentleman has come, and his blessings and rank are as thick as thatch. His red knee-covers are bright red, to rouse the six armies.
瞻彼洛矣，維水泱泱。君子至止，鞸琫有珌。君子萬年，保其家室。
Looking at the Luo River, its waters wide and broad. The gentleman has come, and the jade ornaments of his scabbard are fine. May the gentleman live ten thousand years, and protect his house.

裳裳者華，其葉湑兮。我覯之子，我心寫兮。我心寫兮，是以有譽處兮。
Flowers in splendid bloom, their leaves are lush and thick. I have met this man, and my heart is unburdened. My heart is unburdened, and so there is good name and peace.
裳裳者華，芸其黃矣。我覯之子，維其有章矣。維其有章矣，是以有慶矣。
Flowers in splendid bloom, yellow and bright. I have met this man, and it is because he has refined elegance. Because he has refined elegance, there is cause for celebration.
裳裳者華，或黃或白。我覯之子，乘其四駱。乘其四駱，六轡沃若。
Flowers in splendid bloom, some yellow and some white. I have met this man, driving four white horses. Driving four white horses, the six reins are glossy.
左之左之，君子宜之。右之右之，君子有之。維其有之，是以似之。
To the left, to the left, the gentleman is suitable. To the right, to the right, the gentleman has what it takes. Because he has it, he is able to be like his forebears.
交交桑扈，有鶯其羽。君子樂胥，受天之祜。
The green sparrows flit about, their feathers lovely with pattern. The gentleman is joyful and receives Heaven's blessing.

The green sparrows flit about, their necks lovely with pattern. The gentleman is joyful and is the screen of the ten thousand states.
之屏之翰，百辟為憲。不戢不難，受福不那。
He is the screen and the backbone, the model for a hundred lords. He is not hasty or afraid, and receives no small blessing.
兕觥其觩，旨酒思柔。彼交匪敖，萬福來求。
The rhinoceros-horn cup curves, and the fine wine thinks of mildness. In dealings he is not arrogant, and ten thousand blessings come to seek him.
鴛鴦于飛，畢之羅之。君子萬年，福祿宜之。
The mandarin ducks fly, caught with small and large nets. May the gentleman live ten thousand years, and blessings and rank suit him.

The mandarin ducks are on the fish weir, with their left wing tucked in. May the gentleman live ten thousand years,
宜其遐福。乘馬在廄，摧之秣之。君子萬年，福祿艾之。
and may long-lasting blessings be fitting for him. The carriage horses are in the stable, fed with chopped fodder and fed with grain. May the gentleman live ten thousand years, and blessings and rank sustain him.

蔦與女蘿，施於松上。未見君子，憂心怲怲；既見君子，庶幾有臧。

如彼雨雪，先集維霰。死喪無日，無幾相見。樂酒今夕，君子維宴。
Like the snow that falls, what gathers first is the sleet. Death and mourning have no fixed time, and there are not many days left to meet. Tonight we drink in joy, and the gentlemen simply feast.
間關車之舝兮，思孌季女逝兮。匪飢匪渴，德音來括。雖無好友？式燕且喜。
The axle-pins clatter, jian guan; a lovely young woman is being married. It is not hunger or thirst, but a good name that has come to join her. Though I have no good friends, we feast and are glad.
依彼平林，有集維鷮。辰彼碩女，令德來教。式燕且譽，好爾無射。
In that lush level forest, the pheasants rest. The timely great maiden, her virtue comes to instruct. We feast and have good repute, and love you without weariness.
雖無旨酒？式飲庶幾。雖無嘉餚？式食庶幾。雖無德與女？式歌且舞？
Though I have no fine wine, I will drink a little. Though I have no good dishes, I will eat a little. Though I have no virtue to give you, shall we sing and dance?
陟彼高岡，析其柞薪。析其柞薪，其葉湑兮。鮮我覯爾，我心寫兮。
Climbing that high ridge, I cut oak for firewood. I cut the oak for firewood, and its leaves are lush and thick. Rare that I should meet you, and my heart is unburdened.
高山仰止，景行行止。四牡騑騑，六轡如琴。覯爾新婚，以慰我心。

營營青蠅，止於樊。豈弟君子，無信讒言。

賓之初筵，左右秩秩。籩豆有楚，殽核維旅。酒既和旨，飲酒孔偕。
When the guests have just taken their seats, those left and right are orderly. The bamboo and wooden dishes are neat and tidy, and the meat and fruit are laid out. The wine is already mild and fine, and the drinking is orderly.
鐘鼓既設，舉酬逸逸。大侯既抗，弓矢斯張。射夫既同，獻爾發功。
The bells and drums are set out, the toasts rise in order. The great target is raised, and the bows and arrows are drawn. The archers have come together; present the merit of your shots.
發彼有的，以祈爾爵。
Hit that bull's-eye, and seek your cup of wine.
籥舞笙鼓，樂既和奏。烝衎烈祖，以洽百禮。百禮既至，有壬有林。
The flute dances, and the sheng and drums, the music is already played in harmony. Present music to the meritorious ancestors, to go with the hundred rites. The hundred rites have arrived, great and abundant.
錫爾純嘏，子孫其湛。其湛曰樂，各奏爾能。賓載手仇，室人入又。
They give you great blessings, and your descendants are drunk with joy. Drunk and saying they are happy, each presents his talent. The guests then choose their own opponents, and the host goes in and comes out again.
