Twelve Stars General Overview

The twelve stars used in this book are paired according to the six realms of Buddhism: the celestial realm is paired with "Tian Gui Star" and "Tian Fu Star," the ghost realm with "Tian E Star" and "Tian Yi Star," the human realm with "Tian Quan Star" and "Tian Gu Star," the animal realm with "Tian Po Star" and "Tian Ren Star," the asura realm with "Tian Jian Star" and "Tian Yi Star," and the immortal realm with "Tian Wen Star" and "Tian Shou Star." These twelve stars are placed in the twelve earthly branches on the palm: Zi (rat) corresponds to Tian Gui Star, Chou (ox) to Tian E Star, Yin (tiger) to Tian Quan Star, Mao (rabbit) to Tian Po Star, Chen (dragon) to Tian Jian Star, Si (snake) to Tian Wen Star, Wu (horse) to Tian Fu Star, Wei (goat) to Tian Yi Star, Shen (monkey) to Tian Gu Star, You (rooster) to Tian Ren Star, Xu (dog) to Tian Yi Star, and Hai (pig) to Tian Shou Star. Each palace has one star, fixed and unchanging. The method of counting is "male in order, female in reverse" — for male fate, count in the order of the earthly branches, while for female fate, count in reverse. The calculation involves three steps: first, start counting from the palace corresponding to the earthly branch of the birth year, count to the birth month to determine the month star; then, starting from the palace of the birth month, count to the birth day to determine the day star; finally, starting from the palace of the birth day, count to the birth hour to determine the hour star. The palace of the birth year itself is the year star, and no further counting is needed.

Here is an example for a male birth: born on the third month, eighteenth day, and卯 (second) hour of the Gengzi year. The Zi year falls in the Zi palace, which is called 「Heavenly Noble Star」, this is the year star. To determine the month star, count three palaces from the Zi palace in a clockwise direction—Zi is the first, Chou the second, Yin the third, arriving at the Yin palace, which is called 「Heavenly Authority Star」, this is the month star. To determine the day star, count eighteen palaces from the Yin palace in a clockwise direction, after completing a full cycle, it lands in the Wei palace, which is called 「Heavenly Post Star」, this is the day star. To determine the hour star, count four palaces from the Wei palace in a clockwise direction—Wei is the first, Shen the second, You the third, Xu the fourth, arriving at the Xu palace, which is called 「Heavenly Art Star」, this is the hour star. Now an example for a female birth: born on the sixth month, eighth day, and You hour of the Jiawu year. The Wu year falls in the Wu palace, which is called 「Heavenly Blessing Star」. For a female birth, count in a counter-clockwise direction: starting from the Wu palace, count six palaces, arriving at the Chou palace, which is called 「Heavenly Obstacle Star」, this is the month star; then from the Chou palace, count eight palaces, arriving at the Wu palace, which is called 「Heavenly Blessing Star」, this is the day star; finally, from the Wu palace, count ten palaces, arriving at the You palace, which is called 「Heavenly Blade Star」, this is the hour star. When counting, the native's palace is considered the first palace. The卯 hour is the fourth hour, so count four palaces; the You hour is the tenth hour, so count ten palaces. For the day, count the number of days and the corresponding number of palaces, and if it exceeds twelve palaces, continue counting from the beginning.

Twelve Houses: Auspicious and Malevolent

Bodhisattva Star of Heavenly Worth

A song says: Those born under the "Heavenly Noble Star" will live a life of purity and high status, treating others with harmony and ease; their aspirations differ from the common people, making them outstanding individuals; their minds are at peace, and their nature is clear and enlightened. When this star is in command, the person is noble and virtuous, capable of turning big problems into small ones, and disasters will not trouble them. If they also receive assistance from other auspicious stars such as the "Heavenly Authority Star," the "Lucky God," and the "Post Horse," they will achieve great honor and wealth, both prosperous and affluent. However, if the same star appears repeatedly in the year, month, day, or hour (a term called "repetition"), it will instead lead to sorrow and regret, indicating a mediocre person's fate, which is only half good. If they also encounter the "Heavenly Loneliness Star," the "Heavenly Obstruction Star," the "Heavenly Destruction Star," and the "Heavenly Blade Star," these are ominous stars, indicating someone who constantly faces setbacks in court, though they may be close to power, it is not a complete good fortune.

Ghostly Path Heavenly Obstruction Star

The rhyme says: Those born at a time falling on the "Heavenly Obstruction Star" tend to have confused and unclear thoughts; although they are clearly awake and meticulous, when they act, they seem like the foolish. Such people must suffer from illness to prolong their lives, and they must work hard all their lives to make a living. When this star is in command of destiny, the person is likely to have a chronic illness. If this star is further afflicted by the "Heavenly Break" and "Heavenly Blade" stars, the illness will be severe. However, if the person meets the "Heavenly Authority" and "Heavenly Favor" stars, the illness will be mild, and their fate will be considered above average. If the person meets the "Heavenly Loneliness," "Heavenly Relay," and "Heavenly Deceit" stars, they will be slow in handling affairs, always working hard, and destined for hardship and misfortune, being away from home, which is considered an average or lower fate. The original meaning of this star is that carrying illness can prolong life: minor illnesses can eliminate major calamities, so ancient people did not regard carrying illness as purely bad.

Human affairs: the celestial authority star

The rhyme says: Those born under the "Tianquan Star" have strong will and determination, are capable and responsible, and have a bold and vigorous spirit. Even if they delay or miss deadlines in their work, others are willing to accept their results. A single call can summon a hundred people, showing great authority. When this star is in the命 (destiny), the person is intelligent, handsome, and has a free and easy manner. They possess inner power and are multi-talented. If they are assisted by stars like "TianGui", "TianFu", "TianWen", and "TianShou", they will be respected by all. However, if these auspicious stars are absent, they may only have the name of authority without the real power, making them of medium quality. If stars like "TianE", "TianPo", "TianGu", and "TianYi" are present in the命, they will face difficulties in their endeavors, be unable to keep wealth, and tend to boast before completing tasks. They may claim to be skilled before actually learning, leading to a superficial and unreliable character, resulting in a medium quality destiny.

The star of Heaven's destruction in the domesticated path

The rhyme says: Those born under the "Heavenly Break" star will find that even if they accumulate gold and jade, it will ultimately turn to nothing. At night, they lie awake thinking about how to make their family prosperous, but they don't realize that the bag holding their money is already full of worms. This star indicates empty wealth and the loss of ancestral property. If aided by stars such as "Heavenly Authority," "Heavenly Favor," and "Heavenly Blessing," one's fate may be considered moderate. However, if encountering stars like "Heavenly Post," "Heavenly Blade," "Heavenly Orphan," and "Heavenly Misfortune," especially when repeated, they will face great difficulties, one failure after another, drifting from place to place without a stable home, resulting in a poor fate. The key of this star lies in "not being able to hold on"—not that they cannot obtain wealth, but once obtained, it is lost again.

Shuoluo Tian Jian Star

The rhyme says: Those born under the "Heavenly Deceit Star" have a great capacity like the vast ocean, yet are meticulous like a hair's thickness; they speak words of the Buddha but harbor the venomous heart of a snake, being two-faced and treacherous; they are cunning and cruel, harboring poisonous thoughts within; their intentions are fickle and changeable, making them hard to manage. Those born under this star will live a life of constant toil and restlessness, always talking and moving from one place to another, shifting directions and schemes, making them difficult to understand. If they receive the assistance of the "Heavenly Favor" and "Heavenly Wealth" stars, they may attain abundant wealth and are considered an upper-tier fate. However, if they encounter the "Heavenly Authority" and "Heavenly Blade" stars, they will become cunning and dangerous individuals who manipulate power, with lofty words but corrupt actions, stubborn and fond of schemes. Though they may have the intention to be good, they lack the capacity to forgive others, and their greed and anger are excessive, ultimately not considered virtuous. If they meet the "Heavenly Loneliness," "Heavenly Misfortune," "Heavenly Ruin," and "Heavenly Relay" stars, they will be petty and jealous, considered a lower-tier fate.

Xian Dao Tian Wen Xing

The rhyme says: Those who have the "Heavenly Star" in their destiny are endowed with refined and pure qi, are intelligent and wise, and have clear and lucid thoughts. Men are talented, women are graceful and wise, and their lives are peaceful and auspicious. They are full of literary talent, with eloquent and beautiful expressions. When this star illuminates one's destiny, the person is intelligent and quick-witted, with knowledge surpassing ordinary people, and their affairs are harmonious and prosperous. If assisted by stars such as "Heavenly Favor," "Heavenly Good Fortune," and "Heavenly Art," they will certainly excel in exams, achieve high ranks, and become prominent figures in the court. If they encounter "Heavenly Authority" and "Heavenly Blade," they will be both literary and martial, also being excellent destinies. However, if they meet "Heavenly Ruin," "Heavenly Obstruction," "Heavenly Loneliness," or "Heavenly Post Station," or if the literary stars are repeated, they will have much learning but little achievement, and will not succeed in scholarly or literary pursuits. They are mostly wanderers, and can only be considered as artisans or magicians of lower destiny.

Buddhist and Taoist heavenly star of heavenly blessing

The rhyme says: Those born with the "Heavenly Blessing Star" will surely have surplus grain and wealth in their storehouses; they are broad-minded, with solid family foundations; their wealth is bright, and all kinds of blessings gather together. With this star governing their destiny, the person enjoys happiness and leisure, has a free and easy nature, a broad mind, and a solid foundation. If further aided by the "Heavenly Authority" and "Heavenly Blade" stars, they will have abundant clothing and food, and their granaries will be full, indicating a destiny of accumulating gold and jade. However, if this star is repeated, it leads to thin clothing and food, as too much blessing can easily overflow. If encountering the "Heavenly Relay," "Heavenly Orphan," "Heavenly Deceit," and "Heavenly Ruin" stars, it will inevitably lead to greed, stinginess, jealousy, and difficulties in clothing and food, indicating a lowly destiny.

Ghostly Path Heavenly Messenger Star

The song says: If one's destiny meets the "Heavenly Post Horse" star, they will have a life of constant relocation and moving away from their ancestral home without rest; their body and mind will never find peace; they will travel far and wide, yet never find peace. This star indicates a person who leaves their hometown, though they may have family affection, they will often be busy and hardworking, and everything must be done by themselves. If one meets the "Heavenly Blessing," "Heavenly Authority," "Heavenly Wealth," "Heavenly Blade," and "Heavenly Longevity" stars, they will certainly be supported by the government, have carriages and horses to travel with, and have a glorious and distinguished destiny. If one meets the "Heavenly Solitude," "Heavenly Ruin," and "Heavenly Obstacle" stars, they will be like a leaf in the wind or a floating duckweed on water, restless and uncertain, leading to a lower destiny of wandering outside the world or drifting about in the world. If this star is repeated and conflicts with the "Heavenly Blade" and "Heavenly Obstacle" stars, they are likely to become people who are exiled or banished. The movement of the Post Horse star is active; if it moves in a proper way, it brings honor and officialdom, but if it moves without stability, it leads to wandering. The difference lies only in whether there are auspicious stars to support.

Human affairs: the star of solitude in the heavens

The rhyme says: If one is born when "Heavenly Solitary Star" is present, the Six Relations and siblings are like illusions; one becomes a quiet guest in the Buddhist temple in vain. Even though one has a wife and children, the affection is very distant. This star governing the destiny indicates a life of solitude: for a man, he has no connection with the Six Relations; for a woman, she may harm her husband and have few children. If the Solitary Star is repeated, it is not really solitary, but one will inevitably become half a monk and half a layperson. If helped by "Heavenly Authority," "Heavenly Blessing," "Heavenly Favor," and "Heavenly Longevity," it is considered an excellent destiny, but even then, one cannot avoid being punished in youth. If encountering "Heavenly Ruin," "Heavenly Inn," "Heavenly Deceit," "Heavenly Obstruction," and "Heavenly Blade," one's destiny is certainly that of a wandering life, a lowly fate. To select a suitable destiny for monastic life, one should mainly consider this Solitary Star (the original text mistakenly says "selecting old age for monastic life," but the correct phrase should be "selecting for monastic life").

The star of the heavenly cutting weapon in the realm of livestock

The rhyme says: Those with the "Heavenly Blade Star" are extremely strong-willed, always quarreling and eager to outdo others; they wield weapons and knives, with a tendency towards violence, like generals rushing to battle. This star in the destiny indicates a person with a strong and harsh nature, impetuous, stubborn, self-willed, and intolerant of others' interference, unable to bear even the slightest provocation. However, after this fiery temper passes, there is no further trouble. If they receive the support of the "Heavenly Authority," "Heavenly Favor," and "Heavenly Good Fortune" stars, they will conform to propriety and not be crude, capable of transforming their violent tendencies, making them an excellent destiny. If they encounter the "Heavenly Isolation," "Heavenly Ruin," "Heavenly Deceit," and "Heavenly Obstruction" stars, they will be bold and reckless, prone to physical disabilities, and may even suffer the punishment of being shaved bald and die, making it a poor destiny. Those with fewer凶stars and more吉stars can be considered medium quality; if this star is repeated, it will certainly lead to disability.

Shuoluo Tian Yi Star

The rhyme says: "The star Tianyi nurtures the mind and nature, making one very clever and skillful, able to turn south into north, always showing off one's many talents; sharp-witted and good at using tricks; wherever one goes, one gets along well with others and works diligently (the third line of the original text has an error, 'huì wéi jiàn líng' is not readable). This star in the destiny indicates a person who is intelligent and capable, achieving closeness to noblemen through their skillfulness. If this star is repeated, it instead indicates dullness, laziness, and foolishness, learning much but achieving little, only able to be a laborer. If one also has Tianquan, Tiangu, Tianfu, Tianwen, and Tianshou, with a balance of strength and flexibility, even if one's profession is skill-based, one can establish one's own household. If this star is combined with Tiangu, one can become outstanding among monks and Taoists, which is a medium fate. If one encounters Tianpo and Tian'e, one's skills will never be realized, resulting in a low fate."

The Star of Heavenly Longevity in Taoist Immortality teachings

The rhyme says: Those whose birth times fall under the "Heavenly Longevity Star" will have the longest lifespan; they are respectful to superiors, kind to inferiors, and have a gentle nature; they understand ten parts from one, are benevolent in heart; they have their own judgment in matters of joy and anger, not swayed by others. This star in the destiny indicates a person who is long-lived and healthy, wise and intelligent, gentle and kind in conduct, with a heart to save others and no intention to harm; sometimes they show kindness but may invite resentment, yet they are simple and honest, and are respected by all. Their life is peaceful and stable, with a beginning and an end, and they do not show their emotions easily. If they receive the assistance of the "Heavenly Authority," "Heavenly Blessing," "Heavenly Favor," and "Heavenly Blade" stars, they will certainly have a broad-minded nature and long-lasting happiness and longevity. However, if this star is repeated, they may have a long life but lack blessings. If it is combined with the "Heavenly Loneliness," "Heavenly Ruin," and "Heavenly Obstruction" stars, it is considered an average fate.

Twelve Stars General Overview (Combined Judgment)

To thoroughly examine the method of divining a person's fate, one must first determine which palace each of the four pillars falls into and which limit they have reached. For a male's fate, the most feared stars are "Tian Gu" (Heavenly Solitude) and "Tian Yi" (Heavenly Post), but if they are accompanied by "Tian Fu" (Heavenly Blessing) and "Tian Gui" (Heavenly Wealth), it is not a problem. For a female's fate, the most feared stars are "Tian Po" (Heavenly Break), "Tian Ren" (Heavenly Blade), and "Tian E" (Heavenly Obstacle), but if "Tian Quan Star" (Heavenly Authority) is present, it can actually help her husband and bring prosperity to her children. Those who have "Tian Wen Star" (Heavenly Literature) and "Tian Yi Star" (Heavenly Art) in their fate are clever and resourceful in mind; those who have "Tian Fu Star" (Heavenly Blessing), "Tian Gui Star" (Heavenly Wealth), and "Tian Shou Star" (Heavenly Longevity) have a stable and solid fate. However, if one has "Tian Wen Star" and it is repeated, it may indicate poverty, low status, immorality, and dishonor to the ancestors. When the year of one's fortune coincides with the same star appearing twice, this period of fate becomes greatly obstructed. If a particular month falls into the palace with "Tian Gu Star" (Heavenly Solitude), "Tian Po Star" (Heavenly Break), or "Tian E Star" (Heavenly Obstacle), that month is likely to bring misfortune. This section establishes the general principle: when examining fate, one must distinguish between male and female, and between the palace and the limit. The same star may have different implications for male and female fates, and also differ between one's native stars and the stars encountered in one's fortune.

A man with two instances of "Heavenly Wealth" appears wealthy but is actually not; a man with two instances of "Heavenly Authority" has his authority cut off and is effectively powerless. If "Heavenly Literature" appears twice, both men and women tend to be prone to licentiousness. A woman with two instances of "Heavenly Wealth" will eventually meet with wealth; if she has four instances of wealth stars, she will have children and sufficient food and clothing. If "Heavenly Blessing" appears twice, clothing and food will come naturally. If "Heavenly Obstruction" appears in both the day and hour pillars, it does not actually bring obstruction; if three instances of obstruction stars appear, there will be no disaster, and there will be surplus in clothing and food ("旡" is an ancient character for "no"). If only "Heavenly Authority Star" appears in the destiny period, it is uncertain, and it indicates punishment of wife and children. If four instances of obstruction stars appear, there will be two sons and surplus in clothing and food. This section discusses the changes caused by "repetition of stars": when the same star appears multiple times, it often changes from good to neutral or from bad to good, so one should not judge solely based on a single star.

Those with two "Tianquan Stars" are dignified and upright; those with three are destined to hold authority. Those with two "Tianpo Stars" have stable clothing and food; those with three suffer continuous losses and are of a low destiny; those with four have neither sustenance nor long life. Those with multiple "Tianjian Stars" appear honest rather than deceitful; those with three are cunning and degenerate; those with four are likely to face exile, punishment, and loss of family fortune. This shows that the more "Tianquan Stars" one has, the greater the authority, while "Tianpo" and "Tianjian" stars are considered fortunate with two, and extremely dangerous with three or four, following the principle of cumulative interpretation for each star.

The reappearance of "Tianwen Xing" (Celestial Star of Heaven and Stars) indicates wealth and honor; when appearing three times, one's clothing and food are meager but literary talent is abundant; when appearing four times, one may harm one's wife and suffer eye injuries. "Tianfu Xing" (Celestial Star of Heavenly Blessing) appearing twice brings harm to one's wife but brings early noble status; appearing three times brings longevity but no fortune; appearing four times brings abundant clothing and food. "Tianyi Xing" (Celestial Star of Heavenly Post) appearing twice indicates that a woman may achieve prominence; appearing three times indicates a low social status; appearing four times indicates the ability to gain help from servants. "Tianhu Xing" (Celestial Star of Solitude) appearing twice indicates having children; appearing three times indicates that women may harm their husbands and men may harm their children; appearing four times indicates a poor wife. "Tianren Xing" (Celestial Star of Heavenly Blade) appearing twice indicates a kind-hearted nature; appearing three times indicates a destiny under the control of a nobleman; appearing four times indicates although having power and status, one's life is short. "Tianyi Xing" (Celestial Star of Heavenly Skill) appearing twice brings harm to one's wife and children; appearing three times indicates being dull and foolish; appearing four times indicates hardship and failure in all endeavors. "Tianshou Xing" (Celestial Star of Heavenly Longevity) appearing twice indicates a dull character; appearing three times indicates leaving home and becoming a monk, enjoying a long life; appearing four times indicates leaving one's hometown and living in poverty but remaining virtuous. This passage lists the distinctions of two, three, and four appearances of each star, forming the main framework of the entire book's comprehensive interpretation.

When both "Heavenly Wealth" and "Heavenly Post" appear together, there will be much toil and travel. If one has already fallen into ruin and meets "Heavenly Astronomy," it will surely lead to an early death. If "Heavenly Authority" meets "Heavenly Orphan," there will be many conflicts and punishments. If two "Heavenly Longevity" stars appear, although the lifespan may be long, there will be continuous misfortune and troubles. If a person has multiple "Star of Deceit" in youth, he will be stingy, greedy, and have a short lifespan. If "Heavenly Art" meets "Heavenly Deceit," it indicates injuries and losses. If "Heavenly Blade" meets "Heavenly Obstacle," it signifies illness and poverty. If a person is born with two "Heavenly Obstacles," he will meet misfortune and death in early years. If there are three "Heavenly Orphans" in the four pillars, there will be ruin in middle age. If "Heavenly Blade" and "Heavenly Obstacle" fall into the same palace, it will harm both oneself and one's siblings. If "Heavenly Wealth," "Heavenly Longevity," and "Heavenly Authority" fall into the year or month pillars, the family will have a prosperous heritage and a distinguished lineage. If "Heavenly Ruin," "Heavenly Blade," "Heavenly Orphan," and "Heavenly Obstacle" appear in the same hour, the husband, wife, and children will all be affected. The principles of mutual reference among the twelve stars are explained here completely. By using them to judge a person's fate, there is nothing to doubt. A wise person only needs to examine carefully and investigate thoroughly, and can clearly see the fortune or misfortune before it occurs.

Discussing the Month of Birth

In the section discussing the birth month, each of the twelve months of the year is assigned a poem to interpret fate. Starting with the first month: the poem states that a dignified appearance is a result of past-life connections; one's life is filled with joy and continuous good fortune; there is guidance from a nobleman, leading to increasing happiness; the couple is harmonious and united, able to live together for a hundred years. Those born in the first month are favorable for official positions and associating with the powerful; they can turn major events into minor ones, indicating a careful and cautious nature; they attract wealth from all directions, and their wife and children are harmonious, without any harm or discord.

The poem about people born in the second lunar month says: Heaven gives a kind and benevolent nature, known only to oneself; throughout life, clothing, food, and salary come naturally abundant; wealth is sufficient, property is considerable, and there is much prosperity and wealth; those of high status like him, but the petty people bully him (the first line's "干" is suspected to be a mistake for "天"). Those born in the second lunar month have a gentle nature, no malice in their hearts, are intelligent and have many strategies, but have a shallow connection with the Six Relations; in middle age, they experience a great fortune, but it is half real and half false. The poem about people born in the third lunar month says: Their hearts are upright and their minds are broad; throughout life, they can attract wealth from all directions; in middle age, they experience honor and prosperity, like a withered tree encountering spring and regaining new growth. Those born in the third lunar month have a broad and magnanimous nature, can endure things, have a plain beginning in early years, prosperity in middle age, and a life of honor and wealth in old age.

The poem for those born in April says: one's fortune year by year improves; there is no need to be resentful or angry, or to suffer from constant worry; if one can also observe a vegetarian diet, do good deeds, be kind and helpful to others, and accumulate merit, then the husband and wife will eventually be harmonious and united. Those born in April have unstable minds, their fame spreads far and wide, and they enjoy making friends; they cannot hold on to their ancestors' property and must establish their own family traditions; their early years are ordinary, but in their later years they will achieve great wealth and prosperity. The poem for those born in May says: frequently encountering unexpected wealth; being guided by a nobleman, smiling and happy; the fields and properties flourish; wealth and honor come one after another. Those born in May have a gentle and kind nature, are clever and have power, act with authority and integrity, and can receive the guidance of a nobleman; however, there is a sign of separation from their spouse in the middle of their life.

The poem about those born in June says: Throughout their lives, their clothing, food, and salary will naturally flourish; they will be prominent and fond of literature; they will live a leisurely and happy life, with a wealthy family; their spouses will grow old together, sharing a hundred years (「Hao Da」means 「Xian Da」, a miswriting due to similar pronunciation in the original text). Those born in June are clever and quick-witted, capable and far-sighted, possessing a particular skill but not sticking to their ancestors' occupation; they will have wealth in their early years, good fortune in their middle years, and wealth and honor in their later years, though their schemes and thoughts are too intricate—this is still considered a good fate. The poem about those born in July says: Throughout their lives, they need not worry about anything; they will be safe and free from troubles; their family estate and farmland are suitable for them to establish themselves; only then do they realize that blessings and honors must be sought from their own destiny. Those born in July are kind-hearted, careful and meticulous in their work; they have an ordinary period in their early years, but a prosperous and glorious fate in their middle and later years.

The poem about those born in August says: They are upright in appearance, with a dignified look; their minds are clever, their nature kind; they are capable in handling affairs, and have a clear understanding of things; when their fortune comes, they will have long-lasting blessings. Those born in August have bright eyes and a sharp mind, are upright and impartial, have both skills and wealth, and are destined to gain the favor of the powerful through their writings; if they leave their ancestral home and go elsewhere, they may achieve great success. The poem about those born in September says: Merchants are strong in all aspects; in business planning and actions, they are full of ambition; if they cultivate virtue and accumulate merit, their clothes and wealth will fill their chests. Those born in September have a strong and stubborn nature, and are prone to causing trouble; they have authority and are favored by the powerful, but in matters of marriage there is mutual control, they will have children late and marry late.

The poem about those born in the tenth lunar month says: Those born in the tenth month have auspicious stars governing their destiny; calamities will always recede and not intrude; as long as they observe fasting and hold good thoughts, act kindly towards others, their clothing and food will be sufficient and satisfying. Those born in the tenth month have a heart as vast as the sea; they are neither diligent nor lazy in their actions, facing difficulties first and then finding ease, thus having a destiny where their clothing and food can sustain their body. In terms of children, they will first have a daughter and then a son. If they take up monastic life, it will be difficult to become a master or to have disciples; if they live at home, they will find it hard to have children, and there will be many conflicts between husband and wife. The poem about those born in the eleventh lunar month says: They become independent early in life; their clothing, food, andofficial stipend are naturally commendable; they can rely on neither their flesh and blood relatives nor their siblings; instead, their closest friends are the most understanding. Those born in the eleventh month have authority but are impetuous in temperament, are shrewd and able to gain the favor of the powerful, have many strategies in their hearts, but carry hidden illnesses that are not apparent on the surface; their early years are ordinary, but their middle and later years are destined for wealth and honor. The poem about those born in the twelfth lunar month says: They work hard and endure hardship early in life; they handle all matters independently, not relying on others; they are straightforward in speech and cannot hide their ill intentions; they have family harmony and live together for many years. Those born in the twelfth month face many hardships, are straightforward in speech, and are prone to hidden illnesses; the clothing and food of their parents, siblings, and wife come naturally; they can gain wealth from all directions, making it a half-good destiny.

Discussing the day of birth.

In the section on the birth date, six stars are established separately: the Sun Star, the Moon Star, the Heavenly Martial Star, the Heavenly Blessing Star, the Heavenly Emperor Star, and the Taiyi Star. These differ from the twelve stars on the palm, as they are specifically assigned to take turns according to the date. The method of arrangement is to divide the thirty days of a month into five cycles of six days each. They are arranged in six columns horizontally and five rows vertically. The first cycle covers the first to sixth day, the second cycle the seventh to twelfth day, the third cycle the thirteenth to eighteenth day, the fourth cycle the nineteenth to twenty-fourth day, and the fifth cycle the twenty-fifth to thirtieth day. Each column is fixed to a specific star—the first column (first, seventh, thirteenth, nineteenth, and twenty-fifth days) belongs to the Sun Star, the second column to the Moon Star, the third column to the Heavenly Martial Star, the fourth column to the Heavenly Blessing Star, the fifth column to the Heavenly Emperor Star, and the sixth column to the Taiyi Star. If the birth date falls in a particular column, that star is said to be in charge of that day and is used to interpret the destiny.

On the first, seventh, thirteenth, nineteenth, and twenty-fifth days of the lunar month, people are born under the "Sun Star" day: they have enough food and clothing; their early years are stable, and their later years are prosperous; at nineteen and twenty-five, men can enjoy honor and success; their parents are helpful; women have a good fortune that benefits their husbands. On the second, eighth, fourteenth, twentieth, and twenty-sixth days of the lunar month, people are born under the "Moon Star" day: they are refined and have a spiritual quality; they have conflicts with their parents; they have no support from the Six Relations and their siblings are not reliable; men are seen as unusual and extraordinary, while women are intelligent and capable of establishing their own households. The Sun Star belongs to Yang and governs the father and husband, so those born on this day have supportive parents and women who bring fortune to their husbands. The Moon Star belongs to Yin and governs the mother and the soft, so those born on this day are refined but isolated, and the two stars form a contrast.

Those born on the 3rd, 9th, 15th, 21st, and 27th days are under the "Heavenly Martial Star" which indicates that although the couple may be harmonious, they cannot live together until old age; children may suffer injuries; in old age they will have honor and wealth; it is advisable to adopt a child as a son-in-law, to leave the ancestral home and establish a new household; the family's land and property are likely to be lost; for women, they may harm their husbands, have few children, and even if they do, they may be separated; however, if they adopt a child, there will be no problem. Those born on the 4th, 10th, 16th, 22nd, and 28th days are under the "Heavenly Blessing Star" which indicates that people learn a lot but achieve little; in middle age they may have no wealth and often get into trouble; they tend to marry early; in old age they will have great fortune and good luck.

Those born on the 5th, 11th, 17th, 23rd, and 29th days are under the influence of the "Heavenly Emperor Star": they are intelligent and resourceful, with sufficient food and clothing; they have shallow connections with their six relations, and no siblings to rely on; their wealth is neither lacking nor excessive, making this a moderate fate. Those born on the 6th, 12th, 18th, 24th, and 30th days are under the influence of the "Supreme Emperor Star": they learn much and gain much; they lead a leisurely and noble life, following the path of literature and scholarship; they encounter great fortune early in life, have a stable middle age, and enjoy great wealth and honor in old age; however, they also lack support from siblings and must rely on themselves for everything. Among the six stars, the Sun Star and the Supreme Emperor Star are the most auspicious, followed by the Heaven Blessing Star and the Heaven Emperor Star. The Too Yin Star and the Heaven Martial Star each bring some isolation and hardship. This is a general summary of the interpretation of the daily stars in this section.

On the time of birth

On the fortune of people born at the twelve hours

The section on birth time divides the twelve hours into individual entries, each corresponding to a specific hour, from Zi to Hai. At the end, there is a general summary. Each hour is further divided into three parts: "initial hour," "middle hour," and "final hour," because each hour spans two hours, and the influences differ between the beginning and the end. First, the Zi hour: Those born in the Zi hour have a quick temper, are strong-willed in their nature; they are frugal but inconsistent in their actions; they tend to cause trouble; both parents and spouse are helpful; they are destined to build a family through their own efforts. The critical ages for those born in the Zi hour are twelve, eighteen, thirty-six, forty-five, and fifty-eight. If they can pass through these ages, they may live to be eighty-nine.

Zi hour

Those born in the first half of the Zi hour will first harm their mother. In their lifetime, they will achieve only seven parts of their efforts and retreat eight parts, accomplishing nothing out of ten things. They have distant relationships with the Six Relations. Their clothing, food, salary, and fortune fluctuate between good and bad. They will enjoy happiness in old age, with both harvest and results being favorable. The poem says: What is the fate of those born at the beginning of the Zi hour? They will often advance and retreat in their affairs. It is most auspicious for them to become teachers or monks and nuns. Otherwise, they will suffer a lifetime of hardship. In terms of children, they will first have a son, and have no more than two children. When choosing a wife, they should marry a woman who has been previously married (a "change-head wife," meaning a woman who has remarried or divorced). In the end, they will be able to establish fields and estates.

Those born in the middle part of the Zi hour do not suffer from punishments or damages; they are ambitious and competitive in their endeavors, experiencing ups and downs, with both success and failure. Eventually, although they become very prosperous, it is necessary for them to leave their ancestral home and marry into another family for good fortune. The poem says: Although heaven bestows great fortune, it is unfortunate that the hour falls on the "living fire palace," destined for leaving home and traveling. In their career, they should be cautious of minor mistakes; doing many good deeds and accumulating merit will ensure continued success. Those born in the latter part of the Zi hour first suffer from the loss of their father; they cannot rely on their six relations; their children's affairs are not smooth; they work hard all their life, with tasks started but not finished; they cannot keep wealth, experiencing constant changes in fortune. However, their later years are good. The poem says: Those born at the end of the Zi hour first lose their father; they have three children, of whom only one becomes successful; they still have thirty years of good fortune in their later years.

The poem says: A person born in the middle of the Chou hour should first be cautious about the father's misfortune; the first son is usually difficult to raise; they should also be cautious about the wife's loss; the parents will also experience a false alarm. This person is intelligent and quick-witted, with increasing blessings and official rank; they have abundant wealth and property; and in their later years, they achieve great prosperity and success. Whether male or female, they are destined to leave their ancestral home. The poem says: A person born at the end of the Chou hour may suffer loss from the mother; if it is a female fate, it may also cause trouble for the father; in terms of children, they will first have a son and then a daughter; in their later years, they will receive help from a Nobleman.

The poem says: early years are very laborious; they strive and work hard to establish their own household; once they meet a true friend and good fortune comes, it is like a withered tree blooming again; although there are many siblings in fate, the fields and estates belong to others; although children are hard to rely on, a virtuous wife is commendable.

The hour of the Dragon (Chen)

A person born in the辰 (Chen) hour, in the sections of parents, siblings, wife, and the six relations, should have water and metal elements to form a good pattern (the term 「父禺」 should be 「父母」, as the original text has a similar character that was mistakenly written). This person is intelligent and quick-witted; they will have wealth in their early years, but will lose money in their middle years, and regain prosperity in their later years. At the ages of 19, 27, 36, and 39, there will be minor troubles, but after they pass, they will live to be 75 years old. For those born in the first part of the辰 hour, they will first harm their father; if they are the eldest son, their brothers will not be able to both survive; although they are intelligent, they will develop their talents later; they are kind-hearted and loving; they can turn big matters into small ones; their clothing and food are ordinary; they manage everything on their own; their children come late; they must leave their ancestral home and marry into another family. The poem says: clothing and food come from all directions; brothers and the six relations are not harmonious; thorns grow out of nowhere on flat ground; idle disputes trouble the mind; the father, like a great pine tree, dies early (「椿」 is an ancient term for father); the wife often cries; all through life, there is much ups and downs, and it seems to be destined by fate.

People born in the middle of the辰 (Chen) hour first harm their mothers; their livelihood is average; they have upright and strong characters; they become wealthy and prosperous in middle age; they are impetuous, like a gust of wind passing through the mouth, quick to gain and quick to lose; they establish their own family businesses; they marry women from noble families; they are destined to be in-laws living outside their parents' home. A poem says: they are constantly traveling and working outside; their wealth comes and goes; they lack support from their six relations; they often encounter disputes over words; the wife's palace of those born at the exact middle of the辰 hour faces difficulties; there is not much harmony between children and grandchildren; the stepson supports the mother; but their later years are very prosperous. People born in the latter part of the辰 hour have no punishments or damages in their fate; they are fair-minded; their wealth and official rank are stable and abundant; they enjoy much happiness; they rise like a carp leaping over the dragon gate, changing their fate dramatically; they are destined to bring glory to their family. A poem says: they transform like a fish turning into a dragon, shedding their old forms; their clothing and food naturally become abundant; once the right opportunity comes, their fame shakes the four seas; the first wife of those born at the end of the辰 hour may cause difficulties; those who remarry are often from the same family (the term "阗房" should be "填房"); their biological sons are not very helpful; the stepson is closer to them.
