This is exactly the purpose of dividing each hour into early, middle, and late parts in this book—since the same hour may have different influences at different times, the method of divination will change accordingly.
General Discussion
To examine the method of divining one's fate in detail, the fundamental basis is the Eight Characters (Ba Zi). If all eight characters are favorable without any conflicts, clashes, punishments, or destruction, it is like a house with deep and solid foundations, which can withstand the wind without shaking. When encountering a suspicious period of fortune, wealth and official rank may arise. Even if encountering an adverse period of fortune, it will not lead to calamity or regret. Only when the flow year and period of fortune conflict with the heavenly stem of the day pillar or the hour pillar (the character '千' is a mistake for '干', due to similar appearance in the original text), can one determine that there will be a decline. If the Eight Characters themselves are not solid, even if one encounters good fortune, it may bring misfortune, which is called 'a small boat cannot carry heavy cargo'. If the body is weak and lacks roots, it is often the case that encountering a malevolent period of fortune will lead to an inevitable fate. According to this principle, there is no possibility of error. The talents and heroes of the world, the longevity and short life, and the poverty and success of people on earth, indeed have their own heavenly secrets, which cannot be explained by empty words. The years are originally fixed and determined. If someone was born in a leap month, one can calculate by adding or subtracting the first or second half of the month (the character '润' is a mistake for '闰').
The handling of a leap month is: if someone is born in the first half of the month but before midnight, it is counted as the first half; if born in the second half of the month but after midnight, it is counted as the second half. Regardless of gender, one should look at the four earthly branches in the four pillars: Zi, Yin, Chen, Wu, Shen, Xu belong to Yang; Chou, Hai, You, Wei, Si, Mao belong to Yin. If among the four characters there are more Yang than Yin, it indicates a father's death; if more Yin than Yang, it indicates a mother's death. These rules should be memorized well so that they can be applied smoothly. The order of calculation is: starting from the year pillar to the month pillar, from the month pillar to the day pillar, from the day pillar to the hour pillar, and from the hour pillar to the moment. For male fate, count forward; for female fate, count backward. When encountering a凶 star, it indicates misfortune; when encountering a贵 star, it indicates fortune. Everything operates clearly in the palm, everyone cannot escape. This passage concludes the entire book's method of counting and the general rule of male forward and female backward, which is the origin of the name "One Palm Classic."
On falling ill
This section discusses the days on which people with certain Five Phases destinies are most likely to fall ill. According to the twelve palaces of the growth cycle of the Five Phases, the burial place of metal is Chou, so those with a metal destiny are most dangerous if they fall ill on Jichou day; the burial place of wood is Wei, so those with a wood destiny are most dangerous if they fall ill on Guiwei day; the burial place of water is Chen, so those with a water destiny are most dangerous if they fall ill on Renchen day; the burial place of fire is Xu, so those with a fire destiny are most dangerous if they fall ill on Jiaxu day; and for earth, which is said to be strong in the four seasons, the burial place is taken as Chen, so those with an earth destiny are most dangerous if they fall ill on Bingchen day. The term "burial" refers to the place where the original energy is stored and hidden. When illness occurs on the day of the person's destiny entering its burial place, it is as if the life energy is returning to its source and being hidden away, hence it is considered extremely dangerous. The secret of this method connects heaven and earth: when encountering a large month with thirty days, count downwards; when encountering a small month with twenty-nine days, count upwards. First determine the month and day the illness began, then count according to this method to determine the fortune of the illness. Unfortunately, this secret is very profound, but few people are skilled in its application.
The next is a mnemonic for predicting illness: the fate of life and death is determined in the slightest detail by theEarlier Heaven number. One should start counting from the first day of the month on the palm. When counting to "驿马" (Post Horse), if it is upright, the person may have misfortune but can still be saved; if it is inverted, one should prepare for the end and make arrangements for the afterlife; if it is slanted, there will be illness but it can be cured immediately. When counting to "禄" (Wealth), if it is upright, the illness may be severe but not life-threatening; if both "禄" and "驿马" are inverted, both yin and yang paths are cut off, and there is no way to recover; if "禄" is slanted, there will be misfortune, and one must urgently seek out a skilled physician. Here, "禄" and "马" refer to the positions of the Wealth God and Post Horse on the palm. The three states—upright, slanted, and inverted—are the conditions when counting to these positions, and they determine the severity and outcome of illness.

First, the child's bad hour. The rule is: children born in January and July should avoid the hours of Si and Hai; those born in February and August should avoid the hours of Chen and Xu; those born in March and September should avoid the hours of Mao and You; those born in April and October should avoid the hours of Yin and Shen, as they will cry; those born in May and November should avoid the hours of Chou and Wei; those born in June and December should avoid the hours of Zi and Wu (this line originally had one missing character, the original was 'sixty-two Zi and Wuˋsad'). Each of the twelve months of a year has a forbidden hour, which is the rule for the child's bad hour. Now, the peach blossom evil spirit, those whose destiny is affected by this should not go out. The method is to take the position of the bathing in the triple harmony: Shen Zi Chen form a water triple harmony, the peach blossom is in You, so it is said 'the chicken's call disrupts human relationships'; Hai Mao Wei form a wood triple harmony, the peach blossom is in Zi, so it is said 'the rat is at the head and is to be avoided'; Si You Chou form a metal triple harmony, the peach blossom is in Wu, so it is said 'riding a horse to the south'; Yin Wu Xu form a fire triple harmony, the peach blossom is in Mao, so it is said 'the rabbit comes out from Mao'. The characters You, Zi, Wu, and Mao in the brackets are the branches where the peach blossoms fall in each triple harmony.
The mnemonic for incompatible zodiac signs in marriage refers to six pairs of conflicting animals: sheep and rat meet, and the relationship ends immediately; a white horse fears a green ox; a snake meets a tiger, like being cut by a knife; a pig meets a monkey, like being shot by an arrow; a jade rabbit meets a dragon, and disappears into the clouds (the original text mistakenly wrote 'zhuang' instead of 'dragon', due to similar characters); a golden rooster meets a dog, and both weep. Do not say that yin and yang compatibility has no standard; according to this mnemonic, these combinations are sure to lead to marital failure. Now discussing the four key hours: zi, wu, mao, and you all belong to the 'four cardinal' directions, which form a high-level pattern; the person is intelligent and handsome, capable of displaying heroic spirit; although there are many siblings, they are not reliable; the parents do not get along well; those born at the beginning or end of the hour still have someone to rely on, but those born in the middle of the hour must be alone; wealth is abundant, honor is great, and the person is prominent; like a bird's wings reaching the Milky Way, the fortune is endless (the original text mistakenly wrote 'bo' instead of 'wealth' and 'cheng' instead of 'prestige', these two characters are similarly miswritten throughout the text).
Now discussing the four hours of Yin, Shen, Si, and Hai: these four belong to the "Four Long Lives," which have strong energy; the person is intelligent, inclined towards literary pursuits; those born at the exact middle of the hour have three or four brothers and sisters; those born at the beginning or end of the hour also have a pair of siblings; there is no conflict with parents, and they are often reliable; they achieve honor and prosperity, sitting in high places; if both parents are still alive, their later years are peaceful and fortunate. Finally, discussing the four hours of Chen, Xu, Chou, and Wei: these four belong to the "Four Storage Places" (the original text is missing one character at the end); the upper part hinders the parents, and the relationship with relatives is either close or distant; although there are siblings, they are not reliable; ancestral property is often rented out by others. Those born at the beginning of the hour will see their father pass away first; eventually, the mother will also pass away; they can only find a livelihood by working in the government office (the character "虰" should be "ye," and "脪" should be "ji"); men often become monks or Taoists, while women often become nuns. The division of the four main hours, the four long lives, and the four storage places forms the framework of this section.
Year and Month Encounter Identification Theory
This section discusses "knowledge" (识), which has ten types. They are determined by matching the earthly branch of the birth year with the birth month. By examining the year and month of birth, one can determine which type of "knowledge" a person belongs to, and thus judge their character as good or bad. The first type is "square measure knowledge" (方丈识). The poem says: people with square measure knowledge have a nature free of harmful intentions; they hold power and have authority; as long as the four pillars do not commit punishment and clash (刑冲), they are likely to achieve high status; their talent is sufficient to dominate others, making them outstanding literary men (the character "柽" is mistakenly written as "贵," and this character is similarly misused throughout this section). The years and months corresponding to square measure knowledge are: those born in the year of Zi (子) in the second, seventh, and twelfth months; those born in the year of Chou (丑) in the second, sixth, and eleventh months; those born in the year of Yin (寅) in the second, ninth, and tenth months; those born in the year of Mao (卯) in the first, fourth, and tenth months; those born in the year of Chen (辰) in the second, fifth, and twelfth months (the original text lacks the character "year" here); those born in the year of Si (巳) in the second, sixth, and twelfth months; those born in the year of Wu (午) in the first, fourth, and seventh months; those born in the year of Wei (未) in the second, fifth, and eighth months; those born in the year of Shen (申) in the second, sixth, and twelfth months; those born in the year of You (酉) in the first, seventh, and twelfth months; those born in the year of Xu (戌) in the sixth, ninth, and twelfth months; those born in the year of Hai (亥) in the sixth, ninth, and twelfth months.
The second type is called "Tong Tian Zhi" (Heavenly Insight). The poem says that people with this insight have a long lifespan; their clothing, food, salary, and livelihood are stable and secure; their demeanor is respected by others, and they are often close to noblemen. If this insight appears twice in the four pillars, it is a particularly auspicious fate. The years corresponding to "Tong Tian Zhi" are: those born in the Year of Zi (Rat) encounter the sixth and twelfth months; those born in the Year of Chou (Ox) encounter the first, seventh, and twelfth months; those born in the Year of Yin (Tiger) encounter the fifth, eighth, and twelfth months; those born in the Year of Mao (Rabbit) encounter the third, ninth, and twelfth months; those born in the Year of Chen (Dragon) encounter the second, fifth, and twelfth months; those born in the Year of Si (Snake) encounter the first, fourth, and tenth months; those born in the Year of Wu (Horse) encounter the first, fourth, and seventh months; those born in the Year of Wei (Goat) encounter the first, fourth, and tenth months; those born in the Year of Shen (Monkey) encounter the second, sixth, and eighth months; those born in the Year of You (Rooster) encounter the third and sixth months; those born in the Year of Xu (Dog) encounter the sixth, ninth, and twelfth months; those born in the Year of Hai (Pig) encounter the fifth, seventh, and eighth months.

The third type is called 'Sanhe Zhi' (Triple Harmony Identification). The poem says: Those with the Sanhe Zhi identification often face misfortunes in their early years; when their destiny encounters punishment and clash, misfortunes will come their way; however, those who possess this identification usually have a gentle and harmonious nature, but they are afraid of not being able to retain wealth at home (the character 'li' should be 'jia' and 'fou' should be 'cai'). The years and months belonging to the Sanhe Zhi identification are: in the Year of Zi, during the first, sixth, and ninth months; in the Year of Chou, during the fourth, seventh, eighth, and eleventh months; in the Year of Yin, during the fifth, eighth, and twelfth months; in the Year of Mao, during the sixth, ninth, and twelfth months; in the Year of Chen, during the first, fourth, and tenth months; in the Year of Si, during the second, eighth, and eleventh months; in the Year of Wu, during the first, second, fourth, and eleventh months; in the Year of Wei, during the first, fourth, and tenth months; in the Year of Shen, during the second, eleventh, and twelfth months; in the Year of You, during the second, sixth, and eleventh months; in the Year of Xu, during the first, fourth, and seventh months; in the Year of Hai, during the second, eighth, and eleventh months. The fourth type is called 'Puti Zhi' (Bodhi Identification). The poem says: Those with the Puti Zhi identification have a compassionate nature; as a result, they are hated by wicked people and bullied by good people; however, when they meet good people, they do not bully them, and when they meet wicked people, they do not fear them; throughout their lives, they will naturally possess noble appearance and solid foundation. The years and months belonging to the Puti Zhi identification are: in the Year of Zi, during the second, fifth, and twelfth months; in the Year of Chou, during the second, sixth, and twelfth months; in the Year of Yin, during the fourth, fifth, and tenth months; in the Year of Mao, during the second and tenth months; in the Year of Chen, during the second, sixth, and ninth months; in the Year of Si, during the fourth, seventh, and tenth months; in the Year of Wu, during the fifth, eighth, and tenth months; in the Year of Wei, during the sixth, ninth, and twelfth months; in the Year of Shen, during the fifth, ninth, and twelfth months; in the Year of You, during the second, sixth, and twelfth months; in the Year of Xu, during the second, fifth, and twelfth months; in the Year of Hai, during the second, fifth, and twelfth months.

The fifth type is "Fu Lu Shi" (Prosperity and Wealth Identification). The poem says: Those with "Fu Lu Shi" have great wealth; even if their money is spent, it will come back; in their birth chart, auspicious stars shine brightly, allowing them to often associate with noblemen; their clothing and food will naturally be as they wish (the character "Bo" is mistakenly written as "Cai" and "Xue" as "Xing", these two characters are both miswritten throughout the text). The years and months belonging to "Fu Lu Shi" are: in the Year of Zi, the sixth and twelfth months; in the Year of Chou, the second, ninth, and twelfth months; in the Year of Yin, the fourth, sixth, and twelfth months; in the Year of Mao, the second, fifth, and eighth months; in the Year of Chen, the second, eighth, and twelfth months; in the Year of Si, the first, fourth, and seventh months; in the Year of Wu, the second, fifth, and eighth months; in the Year of Wei, the third, fifth, and twelfth months; in the Year of Shen, the first, seventh, and tenth months; in the Year of You, the third, sixth, and twelfth months; in the Year of Xu, the sixth, ninth, and twelfth months; in the Year of Hai, the first, fourth, and eleventh months. The sixth type is "Liang Jia Shi" (Good Family Identification) (the original text says "Liang Li Shi", both characters are miswritten). The poem says: Those with "Liang Jia Shi" are accustomed to managing estates; their actions are stable, and they enjoy both fortune and status; the ancestral foundation is suitable for change; everything they do is self-reliant, and their family connections are good. The years and months belonging to "Liang Jia Shi" are: in the Year of Zi, the first, fourth, and tenth months; in the Year of Chou, the second, fifth, and tenth months; in the Year of Yin, the second, sixth, and twelfth months; in the Year of Mao, the first, fourth, and seventh months; in the Year of Chen, the second, sixth, and eleventh months; in the Year of Si, the second, sixth, and ninth months; in the Year of Wu, the fourth, seventh, and tenth months; in the Year of Wei, the fifth, eighth, and twelfth months; in the Year of Shen, the sixth, ninth, and twelfth months; in the Year of You, the first, seventh, and tenth months; in the Year of Xu, the second, fifth, and sixth months; in the Year of Hai, the first, fourth, and tenth months.

The seventh type is "Elimination of Misfortune." The poem says: Elimination of misfortune is inherent in one's destiny; born with a nature to do good deeds, one seldom experiences sorrow; within the Five Phases, there are naturally generating deities that assist; blessings continue endlessly, and misfortune never occurs. The years and months belonging to "Elimination of Misfortune" are: in the Year of the Rat, the second, sixth, and twelfth months; in the Year of the Ox, the first, seventh, and tenth months; in the Year of the Tiger, the first, seventh, and eleventh months; in the Year of the Rabbit, the second, ninth, and twelfth months; in the Year of the Dragon, the first, fourth, and seventh months; in the Year of the Snake, the second, fourth, and eleventh months; in the Year of the Horse, the fourth, seventh, and tenth months; in the Year of the Goat, the second, ninth, and tenth months; in the Year of the Monkey, the first, fourth, and tenth months; in the Year of the Rooster, the second, fifth, and eleventh months; in the Year of the Dog, the second, sixth, and eleventh months; in the Year of the Pig, the first, fourth, and tenth months. The ninth type is "Achievement Awareness." The poem says: Those with Achievement Awareness are mostly generous; they often face difficulties in their youth; they have good intentions to help others, but end up creating resentment; this is because they cannot maintain inner peace and patience. The years and months associated with Achievement Awareness are: in the Year of Rat, during the second, sixth, and ninth months; in the Year of Ox, during the second, sixth, and ninth months; in the Year of Tiger, during the fourth, seventh, and tenth months; in the Year of Rabbit, during the fifth, eighth, and tenth months; in the Year of Dragon, during the third, ninth, and eleventh months; in the Year of Snake, during the first, fourth, and tenth months; in the Year of Horse, during the eighth and eleventh months; in the Year of Goat, during the second, ninth, and tenth months; in the Year of Monkey, during the first, fourth, and tenth months; in the Year of Rooster, during the third, fifth, and twelfth months; in the Year of Dog, during the second, sixth, and twelfth months; in the Year of Pig, during the first, fourth, and tenth months. The years and months associated with Buddhist Awareness are: in the Year of Rat, during the fifth, eighth, and eleventh months; in the Year of Ox, during the second, ninth, and twelfth months; in the Year of Tiger, during the first, ninth, and eleventh months; in the Year of Rabbit, during the second and eleventh months; in the Year of Dragon, during the third, ninth, and twelfth months; in the Year of Snake, during the first, fourth, and tenth months; in the Year of Horse, during the third, ninth, and tenth months; in the Year of Goat, during the sixth, ninth, and twelfth months; in the Year of Monkey, during the sixth, ninth, and twelfth months; in the Year of Rooster, during the first, fourth, and twelfth months; in the Year of Dog, during the second, sixth, and ninth months; in the Year of Pig, during the fourth, seventh, and tenth months. The last sentence of the original text is damaged, but the general meaning is that there is an excess of official luck, which is complete, early years are hard, but middle and later years are prosperous and successful. ("蝏" is taken as "余," and one character is missing in the sentence.)
When the sun meets a favorable or unfavorable star, it determines whether a person is biased or upright.
This section still determines fate based on the day star, but the listed dates differ slightly from the previous "Discussion on the Birth Day," and they can be cross-referenced. The character "薛" in each entry is actually a mistake for "星" (star), and "硐" is a mistake for "通" (passage). The Sun Star governs the days of the first, seventh, and thirteenth: those born on these days have fortune and official rank, but lack sufficiency in early years, and achieve success in later years, relying entirely on the blessing of the Sun constellation. The Moon Star governs the days of the second, tenth, and fourteenth: those born on these days have a refined appearance and an unusual wealth in their family; they lose their parents in childhood; men are destined to leave their ancestral home, while women may have conflicts with their husbands. The Celestial Star governs the days of the third, ninth, and fifteenth: those born on these days have harmonious and respectful relationships between husband and wife; there may be conflicts among children; they enjoy abundant fortune in later years; the relationship between husband and wife eventually declines (the original text is missing one character here); men are destined to leave their ancestral home, and women may suffer from marital difficulties; if they cultivate virtue and recite the Buddha's name, they can escape this mid-life hardship.
On the day of the Heavenly Mother Star, those born on the 4th and 16th days of the month: they learn much but achieve little; their spouses are harmonious and peaceful; they cannot avoid disputes; their middle years are quiet and smooth; their later years are even more beautiful (the original text is missing one character here); their wealth and official salary are abundant. On the day of the Heavenly Emperor Star, those born on the 5th, 11th, and 17th days of the month: they have enough food and clothing ("蝏" should be "余"); they are clever and good at handling documents; their siblings are harmonious; they live a comfortable and happy life. On the day of the Taiyi Star, those born on the 6th, 12th, and 18th days of the month: they can enjoy honor and prosperity; their food, clothing, and salary are more than sufficient; their middle years are ordinary; their later years are prosperous and beautiful. These three stars are roughly equivalent to the previous section's Tianfu, Tianhuang, and Taiyi stars, but with slightly different names, showing that in the transmission of this text, the same set of daily stars was referred to by two different names.
The second group under the Sun Star is for those born on the 19th and 25th: their clothing, food, salary, andofficial stipend are all sufficient; they possess heavenly bestowed fortune (the character '饼' should be '秉'); their middle years are plain; afterwards they enjoy abundant blessings. The second group under the Moon Star is for those born on the 20th and 26th: they leave their ancestral home to establish their own households (the character '莉' should be '家'); they have boundless wisdom; they possess both wealth and fortune, which can be considered as adding flowers to a brocade. The second group under the Celestial Star is for those born on the 21st and 27th: men are destined to leave their ancestors' home; they cannot rely on family ties; they prosper when they go out; their marriage宫 has conflicts and punishments. When the same star governs the upper and lower halves of the month, the outcomes differ: the upper half often brings loneliness and hardship, while the lower half turns to abundance. This is the most important point to note when combining this section with the previous one.
The second group under the Tianmu Star, which refers to those born on the 22nd and 28th days: the Six Relations offer no support; they rely entirely on their own diligence and ability to stand out; both men and women marry early; those who go out have the greatest prospects; they are respected by the Nobleman and supported by friends. The second group under the Tian帝 Star, which refers to those born on the 23rd and 29th days: they are harmonious and sociable; they enjoy the blessings of wife, wealth, children, and official rank; their early years are ordinary; their later years bring happiness. The second group under the Taiyi Star, which refers to those born on the 24th and 30th days: they can achieve success in their endeavors; their parents pass away early; their siblings offer no support (the character '巳弟' should be read as '兄弟'); everything is opened up by themselves and initiated by themselves (the character '硐' should be read as '通'); their early years are not prosperous, but their later years are satisfactory. The entire text ends here: starting from the twelve stars on the palm, proceeding to divide by year, month, day, and hour, and then to illness, child煞, peach blossom, ten identities, and daily value, forming a complete system that can be predicted with a single palm.
