易经
The Zhou Changes has two parts. The classic proper is the judgment and line statements of the sixty-four hexagrams, and is very old; the commentaries are ten later texts explaining it, known together as the Ten Wings. Almost every branch of Chinese metaphysics traces back here, but each draws on a different layer: the image-and-number school takes the hexagram figures and numerical structure, the meaning-and-principle school takes the philosophy.
This is the largest category in the library and the widest in range, from Han dynasty image-and-number scholarship through the Song diagram tradition to Qing evidential studies. The same line statement can land in completely different places depending on the commentator, and reading several side by side shows where the disagreements actually lie.
How to read this branch
If your interest is practical divination, start with the hexagram and line statements and the Shuo Gua account of the trigram images. If it is philosophical, start with the Great Treatise.

Charting guides
- Yarrow Stalk DivinationA cast hexagram can go to AI reading. The yarrow stalk method is the casting procedure the Book of Changes describes for itself, set out in the Great Treatise. It is far more involved than tossing coins, but every step is written down in the text, and it distinguishes old from young lines. This page follows the eighteen changes in order.
- Six Lines ChartA cast hexagram can go to AI reading. Six Lines casts a hexagram about one specific matter and reads its structure. Unlike Four Pillars or Purple Star Astrology, which describe a person, Six Lines describes how a situation stands at a particular moment. This page walks through the full process from casting to attribution.
- Plum Blossom Numerology CalculatorA cast hexagram can go to AI reading. Plum Blossom Numerology is traditionally attributed to Shao Yong. What sets it apart is how freely it casts: a time, a spoken number, a direction or something noticed in passing will all serve. It attaches no stems and no relatives, reading the trigrams directly. This page covers casting through to the subject and object.
- Four Pillars Chart CalculatorAI Four Pillars reading builds on the four pillars. The Four Pillars system assigns a pair of Chinese sexagenary characters to the year, month, day and hour of birth. Eight characters in total. This page explains how those eight characters are derived, what each pillar represents, and the mistakes that most often produce a wrong chart.
