Choice Selections from the Orchid Terrace

The previous section originates from the music hall, focusing specifically on the Nayin sound element and the imagery derived from the Earthly Branches.

Part One: General Discussion - The Foundation of Three Lifetimes, the Authenticity of Patterns, and the Method of Taking Images

Human destiny consists of three layers: the Heavenly Stem represents the 'Heavenly Origin,' the Earthly Branch represents the 'Earthly Origin,' and the Nayin sound element represents the 'Human Origin.' Together, these three are called 'Sanming' or 'Three Origins.' The calculation of Sanming follows a cycle of sixty Jiazi, starting from Jiazi and ending at Guihai. Each group of ten stems and branches led by the character 'Jia' covers a ten-day period, and six such groups connect to form a complete cycle of sixty days, thus forming one week.

Looking at a person's destiny naturally relies on a solid foundation. By "foundation," it refers to whether the day stem's Five Phases are born during their appropriate season: wood in spring, fire in summer, metal in autumn, water in winter, and earth, which is strongest in the four seasonal months. Each element thrives and is strong in its own season, which is called a solid foundation.

However, a solid foundation is not enough to determine wealth; one must also consider whether the structure is pure. The term "格" refers to selecting the useful god from the month's stem; one examines the heavenly stem in the month's branch to determine which god can be used, and based on this, the pattern of the destiny is established. The term "局" refers to the combination of the earthly branches: if the earthly branches form triple harmonies such as Shen Zi Chen, Hai Mao Wei, or Si You Chou, it is called forming a "局."

One's destiny clearly has both "Lu" (favorable official star) and "Ma" (favorable wealth star) that correspond and support each other, yet one finds oneself in poverty and low status. This is because "Lu" refers to the official star, and "Ma" refers to the wealth star; if these stars fall in places where their energy is weak or depleted, they not only fail to bring about official rank and wealth, but instead indicate poverty and low status.

In one's destiny, ifInauspicious Sha are mixed and appear together, it may actually indicate great glory and honor.the so-called「凶煞」 refers to seven煞, Yangren, and Wanguan, and similar terms. If theseInauspicious Sha are controlled by a governing element and are seated in a position of strength and vitality, they can transform from harmful to beneficial, leading to prosperity and high status.

The reason why the two previous sentences can reverse the situation to bring about honor and prominence is precisely because the overall structure is high quality, and theInauspicious Sha are hidden and restrained rather than acting openly. For example, if 甲 wood takes 庚 metal as its seven煞, and 丙 fire comes to control 庚 metal, with 庚 metal being confined in the earth branch and not appearing in the heavenly stem, this is called "concealment."

Although the root is weak, as long as there is a noble god to use, it can still form a pattern. For example, if a Jia wood is born in August of the autumn month, the metal is strong and the wood is weak, which is a place with a weak root; however, the Xin metal hidden in the酉 metal is the proper official noble energy of Jia wood. As long as it is not damaged by clash or control, this official noble energy can be used as the useful god to rely on.

Therefore, a fine horse transforms into a dragon steed, rushing straight to the Phoenix Gate. "Phoenix Gate" is a term for the palace gate. The whole sentence describes the person's remarkable talent and achievements, allowing them to enter and exit the court. The imagery is based on the earthly branches:午 represents the horse, 辰 represents the dragon, and 酉 represents the phoenix. If the person's chart contains Bingwu and Renchen, and these are combined with 酉, then this image is formed. Other similar dry and branch combinations can be inferred in the same way.

A snake transforms into the Azure Dragon and ascends to the Heavenly Pool, indicating prominent achievements and fame. The earthly branch Si represents a snake, and Chen represents a dragon. The Nayin sound element Bingwu and Dingwei, associated with the water of the Heavenly Pool, are referred to as the Heavenly Pool. Those born in the year of Si, if their heavenly stem and earthly branch combination includes Chen, the snake transforms into the Azure Dragon. If they also encounter Bingwu or Dingwei, they will surely rise rapidly. However, it is essential to be born at the right time to achieve true honor and recognition. If born during the winter when snakes are dormant and hidden, it will only result in empty fame and reputation. Conversely, if someone with a dragon destiny encounters the snake, it signifies the dragon retreating into a snake, which is a transition from a larger to a smaller element. The classic texts state: a snake born in a dragon's dwelling signifies advancement, while a dragon born in a snake's dwelling signifies retreat.

The sword's energy shines brightly, surpassing the light of the sun and moon, and directly reaches the two constellations of Ox and Dipper. This indicates that the person's destiny is characterized by outward sharpness and brilliance. "Ox and Dipper" refers to the Ox mansion. For example, if someone is born on a Renshen day, having another instance of the character Chou in their four pillars is most favorable. The metal nature reaches its maximum strength when it reaches the positions of Shen and You, so the Renshen and Guiyou, which belong to the Nayin sound element of Sword-Blade Metal, are used as symbols. Metal is likened to a sword. Among the twenty-eight constellations, the Ox mansion corresponds to the position of Chou. When Renshen or Guiyou appear together with Chou, it signifies the sword's energy rising towards the Ox and Dipper constellations. Having Yichou in the pillar is considered the correct pattern; if instead it is Guichou, it only represents a sword sheath. Jichou and Dingchou do not fit this pattern. Guichou is considered only as a sword sheath because its Nayin sound element belongs to wood, and thus should be interpreted according to wood.

One can display a capacity as vast as a river, because a drifting raft has entered the Milky Way. This sentence describes a person with a broad and unrestrained mind. "Chá" refers to the image of a rootless piece of dry wood. A rootless piece of wood is most suitable when it receives Bingwu and Dingwei. Jia wood is yang wood, floating and rootless, just like a piece of wooden raft. In the Five Phases, if there is no earth, and the wood itself is not strong or thriving, this is considered the correct pattern; if there is earth to cultivate it, the wood will take root on the bank and no longer drift with the water. "Heaven River" refers to the Nayin sound element of Bingwu and Dingwei. Originally rootless wood destiny, if the pillar contains Bingwu and Dingwei, it exactly fits this pattern, and is interpreted as a person of the rivers and lakes, with a mind as vast as a river and sea, which is indeed accurate.

The jade rabbit entering the moon palace refers to people born in the year of卯 (Rabbit) who have the combination ofJiwei in their birth chart, indicating a noble and scholarly reputation. The生肖 of卯 is the rabbit, andJiwei has theNayin sound element element of heavenly fire, which pairs with the太阴, the moon's palace. Therefore, when someone born in the year of卯 hasJiwei in their pillar, it is called the jade rabbit entering the moon palace. Conversely, if someone born in the year ofJiwei has the hour of卯, this pattern can also be used. However, since the moon is only visible at night, the卯 used here must beXinmao to be called the jade rabbit.

The arrival of the qilin at the pond where the phoenix resides signifies that someone born in the辰 (Chen) year has ascended to the position of the golden ox, symbolizing a gathering of auspicious signs and unparalleled nobility. The酉 (You) palace is referred to as the golden ox. The辰 (Chen) represents the dragon and the qilin, also known as the dragon pool; the酉 (You) represents the rooster and the phoenix, also called the phoenix pond. The golden ox is a star name associated with the酉 (You) position. Therefore, someone born in the辰 (Chen) year with the酉 (You) in their destiny column is considered a qilin encountering the phoenix pond. Similarly, someone born in the酉 (You) year who has the辰 (Chen) in their destiny column can also use this pattern.

Two, the patterns of the Nayin sound element: pearl raft with sun and moon, mulberry and willow forming a forest.

A person's destiny that brings honor and joy to their parents must match the image of "the child returning to the mother's womb." In the Five Phases, the element that generates me is my parent, and the element I generate is my child. "Mother's womb" refers to the positions of the胎宫 (womb palace) and长生宫 (longevity palace). For example, metal generates water, so metal is the mother of water, and water is the child of metal; wood generates fire, so wood is the mother of fire, and fire is the child of wood. The "mother's womb" refers to these two positions. When metal reaches the卯 (Mao) position, it must meetJimao (Ji Mao), whoseNayin sound element (Nayin) element is earth, which can generate metal; when wood reaches the酉 (You) position, it must meetYiyou (Yi You), whoseNayin sound element element is water, which can generate wood; when wood's long life is in亥 (Hai), it must meet癸亥 (Gui Hai), whose纳音 element is water, which can also generate wood. This is called "the child returning to the mother's womb." The rest of the Five Phases are also judged in this way. Conversely, if a person with a metal destiny meetsDingmao (Ding Mao) orYisi (Yi Si), or a person with a wood destiny meetsGuiyou (Gui You) orXinhai (Xin Hai), they were already harmed in the womb, and the time of birth becomes a ghost or evil spirit, leading to either poverty or short life. Water, fire, and earth destinies are also judged in the same way.

Beauty and goodness can extend to future generations, relying on the image of "water surrounding a flower embankment." Here, "xiu" means beauty. This pattern is characterized by two woods inside and two waters outside. Anything with roots, stems, leaves is called a flower, and the five elements' wood can be used metaphorically. If a person's fate has two woods inside and two waters outside, the wood will not be scorched by fire, and the water will not overflow or drift away, forming the pattern of water surrounding a flower embankment. Water by nature is clear, and flowers by nature are bright and colorful; clarity and brilliance complement each other. The virtue of water represents wisdom, and the virtue of wood represents benevolence. Benevolence and wisdom meet, nourish, and support each other, without any barriers in between. Thus, the foundation for happiness is established, and the source of joy is endless.

The saying of hiding a pearl deep in the sea refers to the favorable combination of Gui Hai meeting Jia Zi, indicating a profound and concealed nature that does not easily reveal itself. The branches Hai and Zi are located in the north, which is the place of the sea. The nayin sound elements of Jia Zi and Yi Chou are sea metal, which are famous but invisible pearls. Dongfang Shuo of the Han dynasty referred to them as clam and oyster. The heavenly stem, earthly branch, and nayin sound element of Gui Hai all belong to water, so they are called the source of water. Since Gui Hai is the source of water, the pearl of Jia Zi is hidden within it, which is called hiding a pearl in the sea.

The person rises above the Milky Way and clouds, with the sword transforming into the Azure Dragon, indicating that the person suddenly ascends to a high position and achieves rapid success. The nayin sound element of Renshen and Guiyou is sword-edged gold, which represents the sword. Those born in Renshen or Guiyou who are born at the hour of Renchen will have the sword transform into a dragon. Gengchen and Jiachen can also be referenced. However, Wuchen is not suitable for this pattern, as it loses its essence upon encountering water. Bingchen, although it can transform, is likely to remain bent and stuck in mud. These two are not appropriate for this pattern.

When Renchen meets Guihai, it is called Dragon Leaping through the Heavenly Gate, indicating a sudden rise to a prominent position. Hai represents the Heavenly Gate. Chen is the Dragon, and Hai belongs to the Qian position, which is Heaven. Some people, upon seeing someone born in the Chen year with a Hai hour, immediately judge it as Dragon Leaping through the Heavenly Gate, but they do not realize that both the Dragon and the Heavenly Gate must be in their proper positions. The Dragon should be represented by Renchen with the Nayin sound element of water, in order to be worthy of this pattern.

Jiwei meets You palace, which is like a bright moon rising from the vast sea, indicating brilliance in old age and widespread fame. Jiyou meeting Jiwei, the Taiyin is in its proper position in Wei, so although Jiwei is heavenly fire, its image belongs to Taiyin, the moon. You is the time when day turns into night, and also the palace of the vast sea. A person born in Jiwei year who receives the You hour is exactly in harmony with this pattern. The accompanying You should be best in Yiyou, Guiyou, and Xinyou, while Jiyou and Dingyou are slightly inferior.

A pearl inside a clam reflects the moonlight, shining brightly and illuminating all around. The nayin sound elements of Jiazi and Yichou are sea metal, representing the brilliance contained within clams and oysters; the moon palace refers to Jiwei. Clams and oysters must absorb the essence of the moon to form pearls, so these two elements are most auspicious when they meet. Those born under Jiazi or Yichou benefit greatly when they encounter Jiwei; similarly, those born under Jiwei can also use Jiazi or Yichou for favorable outcomes.

The golden horse gallops in the wind, neighing loudly, clearly surpassing peers. "Wind" refers to the Wind trigram, which corresponds to the Earthly Branch Si. The Earthly Branch Wu represents the horse, and the Nayin sound element of metal is found in Gengwu and Jiawu, which are called the golden horse. Si corresponds to the Wind trigram. Those born in Gengwu or Jiawu who have the hour of Si are in harmony with this pattern. Among these, those with the hour of Xinsi are best, while others have slightly less fortune. If theThe Post-horse (post-horse) is located in the day pillar and the hour pillar has Si, it can also be used. For example, if theThe Post-horse (post-horse) is in寅 (Yin) due to the triple harmony of Shen, Zi, and Chen, and the birth time is Renyin, which has a Nayin sound element of metal, it is also considered a golden horse. If it also meets the hour of Si, it is counted in this pattern. Other cases can be similarly inferred.

Clouds follow the dragon, and wind follows the tiger. Those whose four earthly branches are arranged in sequence can achieve success in the first-tier examination at a young age. The term "cloud and dragon, wind and tiger" refers to the branches寅 (Yin), 卯 (Mao), 辰 (Chen), and 巳 (Si):寅 is the tiger, 卯 is the thunder, 辰 is the dragon, and 巳 is the wind. When these four characters are arranged in the order of寅, 卯, 辰, 巳, the power is strongest. If the order is reversed or disordered, the power is weaker, and thus the distinction between high and low status is determined by this.

Those who possess all four elements of struggle, conflict, submission, and subjugation along with a noble aura are likely to hold important positions in the imperial court at a young age. "Tianfu" refers to the imperial court. The terms struggle, conflict, submission, and subjugation indicate that the positions of the following columns are coming torestrain the year column: one is struggle, two is conflict, three is submission, and four is subjugation. Another interpretation suggests that a single instance of beingrestrain is not necessarily alarming; if there is also the assistance of a noble deity, it may lead to great wealth and honor. However, if the position is on Kongwang, the fortune will be lighter.

The sun and the moon each occupy their proper positions and shine brightly. Those born with such a destiny possess virtue that brings blessings to the people. Those born in Wuwu and Jiwei have the Nayin sound element of heavenly fire. Fire is suspended in the sky, so Wuwu is in the position of the sun, and Jiwei is in the position of the moon. However, the sun shines brightly during the day, while the moon shines brightly at night. Each of them governs its own period of brightness. The sun rises at the卯 position and sets at the酉 position, and becomes dim at the戌 position. Therefore, those born in Wuwu need to have the亥, 子, or 丑 positions, which are night time positions, to match the pattern. If they are dim and unclear, how can they talk about blessings? Only when the sun and the moon each have their own authority and shine clearly can there be true blessings.

Saplings of mulberry and willow trees grow into forests, indicating that the person has the ability to shoulder great responsibilities and achieve long-term success. Those born with the nayin sound element of Renzi and Guichou are associated with mulberry and osier wood, while those with Renwu and Guiwei are associated with willow wood. If someone born under Renzi or Guichou has the nayin of Renwu or Guiwei, or if someone born under Renwu or Guiwei has the nayin of Renzi or Guichou at birth, it is considered favorable. However, they must be born at the right time to flourish; if they encounter seasons when plants wither and decay, even those destined to become strong will ultimately fail to do so.

Heavenly stems and earthly branches can shed their original forms and transform into deities, transcending the mundane to reach the sacred realm. This describes how a person's destiny can change and eventually achieve great success. Each of the sixty jiazi has its own size, weight, and path to becoming a sage. For metal destiny, those born on Jiazi, Yichou, Renyin, Guimao, Gengchen, Xinsi, Jiawu, and Yiwei, if they have in their pillar the Renshen, Guiyou, Gengxu, and Xinhai, are called "transcending form to become a deity." For wood destiny, those born on Renzi, Guichou, Renwu, Guiwei, Gengshen, Xinyou, Wuxu, and Jihai, if they have in their pillar the Gengyin, Ximao, Wuchen, and Jisi, are called "transcending form to become a deity." For earth destiny, those born on Gengzi, Xinchou, Bingshen, Dingyou, Gengwu, Xinwei, Wuxu, and Jihai, if they have in their pillar the Bingxu, Dinghai, Wuyin, and Jima, are called "transcending form to become a deity." For fire destiny, those born on Bingyin, Dingmao, Jiachen, Yisi, Bingshen, Dingyou, Jiawu, and Yihai, if they have in their pillar the Wuzi, Jichou, Wuwu, and Guiwei, are called "transcending the mundane to become a sage." For water destiny, those born on Bingzi, Dingchou, Jiayin, Yima, Renchen, Guisi, Renxu, and Guihai, if they have in their pillar the Wunu, Dingwei, are called "transcending the mundane to become a sage." In summary, those whose destiny can change will achieve success, unlike those who are confined to a single aspect and rigid in their thinking, who will never reach a high position.

Clasping the dragon's scales and relying on the phoenix's wings, with ambition reaching the clouds, indicates that the person can rely on a nobleman to achieve high status. The hour of Chen represents the dragon's palace, and the hour of You represents the phoenix's pond. When Chen and You combine, it is considered clasping the dragon and relying on the phoenix. However, cases where Yiyou meets Gengchen or Gengchen meets Yiyou are not counted. Yi combines with Geng, and Chen combines with You. However, Yi's luck is in Mao and its Yangren is in Chen, while Geng's luck is in Shen and its Yangren is in You. Within Chen and You, there is hidden "Purple Dark Great Sha." Therefore, one must also carefully check if there are many punishments and evils in the column. If there are many, it becomes a bad fate.

Dragon and Tiger surround and support each other, indicating a strong and majestic destiny with protection on both sides. Chen represents Dragon and Yin represents Tiger. If the birth chart contains Yin and Yin contains Si, or if the pillars contain Chou, Mao, and Si, with Yin and Chen in between, then this pattern is formed.

The Phoenix is attached to the position of禄 and does not leave, indicating a stable and prosperous life with a reputation of clarity and dignity. When among the four heavenly stems, three are the same and one is different, it is called 'Three Stems Phoenix'. For example, three Jia with one Yi, or three Yi with one Jia, etc. If both寅 and辰 are hidden among the year, month, day, and hour, then there is the image of the Phoenix and the presence of the Lu Spirit, which matches this pattern.

A piece of beautiful jade on the Kunlun Mountains, symbolizing its pure and rare value. For those born with a golden destiny, the presence of Wuyin in their fate pillar is suitable; or for those born in Wuyin, if their fate pillar contains one instance of gold, it also fits this pattern. However, if there are two or three instances of gold, it is not considered favorable.

In a grove of osmanthus trees, if one branch is broken off alone, those who possess this pattern will have achievements surpassing the heavens and the earth. Their official rank will be held in the imperial court. A person born on Jiwei day who is born in the autumn month and has Yiwei in their pillar structure matches this pattern. Similarly, a person born on Yiwei day who has Jiwei in their pillar structure also counts. However, if there are two or three instances of wood, it becomes incompatible.

Jingding fire enters the Qian gate, forming a long rainbow spanning the sea, symbolizing the destiny holder's grandeur and widespread fame. For those born in Bing or Ding years, the presence of Yihai or Xinhai in their pillar indicates this. Ding is the divine bird of the Southern, possessing the nature of fire ascending, and the practitioners use it to symbolize the rainbow. The Qian gate refers to the Hai position, and the correct pairing is Yihai and Xinhai. A person born in Ding year who has Xinhai is exactly this pattern.

When the metal of Geng and Xin meets the trigram Xun, it becomes a fierce tiger roaring in the wind, indicating great power and commanding respect. Geng and Xin belong to the metal element, symbolizing the White Tiger of the West; Si represents the wind of Xun. Those born on days with Geng or Xin as their day stem who are born at the hour of Si will have this favorable pattern. The best combinations are Xinsi and Yisi.

A scene of fierce wind, rapid thunder, and torrential rain indicates that the person has a heart full of benefit to the people and helping others. The so-called fierce wind and thunder rain refer to the Wuzi and Jichou of the Nayin霹雳 fire, and the Bingwu and Dingwei of the Nayin heavenly river water. If Wu and Ji are seen with the寅, the寅 contains the mansion of the Winnowing Basket (Ji Xu), which is fond of wind; the酉 contains the mansion of the Net (Bi Xu), which is fond of rain. Adding the卯 position, if born in spring or summer, one will achieve success; if born in autumn or winter, it will only be a hollow honor.

The source is deep and the flowing water is clear, indicating that the person has noble virtues and the appearance of a true scholar. The phrase "source far and water clear" means that in the water destiny column, seeing寅 or卯 indicates a deep source, and if the Nayin sound element sees metal to generate water, it signifies clear flow. However, if there is earth in the column that turbidizes the water, it will only result in an empty reputation.

The Three Marvels are also flanked by the Nobleman, leading to outstanding achievements and accomplishments. The heavenly Three Marvels are 乙, 丙, and 丁; the earthly Three Marvels are 甲, 戊, and 庚; and the human Three Marvels are 壬, 癸, and 辛. The distribution of the Nobleman is as follows: for a day stem of 乙 or 己, the Nobleman is found between 子 (rat) and 申 (monkey); for a day stem of 丙 or 丁, the Nobleman is found between 亥 (pig) and 酉 (rooster); for a day stem of 甲 or 戊, the Nobleman is found between 丑 (ox) and 未 (sheep); for a day stem of 壬 or 癸, the Nobleman is found between 卯 (rabbit) and 巳 (snake); and for a day stem of 庚 or 辛, the Nobleman is found between 午 (horse) and 寅 (tiger). When the Three Marvels are all present and flanked by the Tianyi Nobleman, this configuration is considered favorable, indicating extraordinary auspiciousness.

Five kinds of blessings converge to form auspicious signs, leading to the emergence of a great person in the world. This requires the year, month, day, hour, and the fetal origin to each come from different decades. If only four decades are involved, it does not conform to this pattern.

Clouds and mist condense into thin frost and dew, and only when encountering寅and卯can they flourish. Those born in winter with the Bingwu and Dingwei Nayin sound elements, which are associated with heavenly river water, experience the condensation of water vapor into frost and dew. If both the year and month pillars carry a cold and frozen atmosphere, the entire destiny is characterized by severe cold. However, if there is a sudden appearance of寅and卯in the day and hour pillars, the warm and gentle energy of spring wood can melt this layer of ice, thus forming a harmonious pattern.

Moonlight reflecting on a cold pool, encountering Shen and You signs definitely indicates wealth and prestige. Jiwei represents the moon; water born after mid-autumn is called a cold pool. Those born with Jiwei have water in their destiny, but they also need Shen and You to achieve wealth. Because the moon is clearest in autumn, and water is clearest in autumn, the bright moon and clear water reflecting together form this pattern.

The phoenix dances on a favorable wind, its reputation shaking thousands of miles away. TheYou Palace represents the phoenix, and theSi Palace represents the wind; a person born in the酉 year who is also born in the fifth month is said to have the phoenix dancing with a favorable wind. The reason for mentioning 'favorable wind' rather than just 'wind' is because the巳 must be of the type Dingsi, Yisi, or Jisi to be considered appropriate. Additionally, there should be no conflicts, no clashes, and no damage within the Five Phases, before it can be used. If the elements in the pillar are not harmonious, then 酉 meeting 巳 becomes 'fragmentation', and 巳 meeting 酉 becomes 'rolling curtain', and these two evils rarely fail to indicate misfortune.
