The Concise Catalogue of the Complete Library of the Four Treasuries, masters section twelve, says: old editions ascribe it sometimes to Liu Xin of Han, sometimes to Ge Hong of Jin; in fact it was written by Wu Jun of Liang. Esoteric Traditions of Emperor Wu of Han, one scroll. The Sui Treatise does not record an author. Wen Tingshi's Supplementary Jin Treatise says: the Japanese Catalogue of Books Presently Extant ascribes it to Ge Hong; we follow it now. 'Miscellaneous Formulas of Concealment and Vanishing' (Yinlun Zajue), one scroll. See the Song bibliographic treatise. Wang Ming notes: the 'Miscellaneous Responses' chapter of Baopuzi answers questions about the way of concealment and vanishing; perhaps that is the basis of these miscellaneous formulas.
元始上真眾仙記一卷宋志。今存道藏洞真部譜■類。劉師培讀道藏記云:此書“次行題葛洪枕中記五字,中志各仙官位號及治所,即今所傳枕中記也”。
'Record of the Host of Supreme Perfected Immortals of the Primal Beginning' (Yuanshi Shangzhen Zhongxian Ji), one scroll. See the Song bibliographic treatise. It survives today in the register class of the Dongzhen division of the Daoist Canon (the base text is defective at this character). Liu Shipei's 'Notes on Reading the Daoist Canon' says: in this book the next line bears the five characters 'Ge Hong's Record Within the Pillow'; within it are recorded the offices, titles, and seats of governance of the various immortal officers — it is the 'Record Within the Pillow' (Zhenzhong Ji) transmitted today.
Wang Ming notes: in the methods class of the Dongshen division of the Daoist Canon there is separately a 'Record Within the Pillow' in one scroll, which treats the arts of nourishing life and receiving destiny, and its content differs entirely from the 'Record of the Host of Immortals.' The abstract of the Tongzhi records a 'Record Within the Pillow' in one scroll by Sun Simiao of Tang; it is not known which of these is meant. The General Catalogue with Abstracts of the Complete Library of the Four Treasuries says: 'Book Within the Pillow,' one scroll; the old edition attributes it to Ge Hong of Jin. On examination, the bibliographic treatises of Sui, Tang, and Song contain only 'Mozi: Record Within the Pillow' and 'Plain Book Within the Pillow,' and no 'Book Within the Pillow' by Ge Hong. This version ('Book Within the Pillow') is also called 'Record of the Supreme Perfected Host of Immortals of the Primal Beginning.' Yu Jiaxi's 'Critical Examination of the Siku Abstracts,' scroll nineteen, says that the 'Book Within the Pillow' mentions Xu Mu and Xu Yufu, whereas Hong must have been older than Mu, and Xu Yufu was even more his junior; the deaths of these two men Hong did not live to see — how could he have taken them up and written them into the book? Thus it is plain that the 'Book Within the Pillow' ('Shangzhen Zhongxian Ji') 'did not come from Hong's hand.' Mr. Yu's view is correct.
