Bao Pu Zi Nei Pian (抱朴子內篇) · Volume 14
Wang Ming notes: this is probably the 'Record of the Jade Slips' quoted by the Baopuzi, not a 'Record of the Jade Slips' composed by Ge Hong. Xu Jian's 'Record for Beginning Learning,' scroll twenty-nine, the thirteenth entry on foxes, quotes 'Baopuzi's Record of the Jade Slips' as saying: 'Foxes, wildcats, and wolves all live to eight hundred years; at a full three hundred years they can temporarily change into human form.' This is precisely the passage that the 'Reply to the Vulgar' chapter of Baopuzi quotes from the 'Record of the Jade Slips' (compare the text of the Dunhuang fragments). The 'Far-Ranging Survey' chapter already lists a 'Record of the Jade Slips' in one scroll, sufficient proof that Ge Hong had seen that book. It was the 'Record for Beginning Learning' that mistakenly ascribed the 'Record of the Jade Slips' to Baopuzi. Yan Kejun's 'Informal Drafts of Tieqiao,' scroll six, says this record was probably a work attributed by later men — that too is not accurate. My view is not that later men deliberately forged the attribution, but truly that Xu Jian's generation of Tang men mistitled it.
