Lotus Sutra of the Wondrous Dharma, Fascicle Five

Later Qin (姚秦) · translated by Jiu Moluoshen (鳩摩羅什譯) · Volume 41 / 48

And all the other mountains and forests, the great seas, rivers and waters,

Down to the Avici hell, up to the Summit of Existence,

All the beings within it, he sees entirely.

Though he has not yet attained the heavenly eye, the power of the physical eye is thus.

(The Buddha continued:) "Furthermore, Sadaparibhuta! If good men or good women receive and uphold this sutra, whether reading it, reciting it, explaining it or copying it, they gain twelve hundred merits of the ear. With this pure ear they hear, in the three-thousand great-thousand world, down to the Avici hell and up to the Summit of Existence, all the various speech and sounds, inside and outside: the sounds of elephants, horses, oxen and carriages, the sounds of weeping and lamenting, of conch, drum, bell and chime, of laughter and speech, the voices of men and women, boys and girls, the sound of the Dharma and of non-Dharma, the sounds of suffering and joy, of ordinary people and of sages, of delight and displeasure, the sounds of devas, nagas, yakshas, gandharvas, asuras, garudas, kinnaras and mahoragas, the sounds of fire, water and wind, the sounds of hell, animals and hungry ghosts, the sounds of bhikkhus and bhikkhunis, of shravakas and pratyekabuddhas, of Bodhisattvas and Buddhas. In short, all sounds inside and outside the three-thousand great-thousand world, though he has not yet attained the heavenly ear, with the pure ordinary ear born of his parents he hears and knows them all, distinguishing the various sounds without harming the faculty of hearing."

Then the World-Honored One, wishing to restate this meaning, spoke in verse:

"The ears born of his parents are pure and without defilement,

With these ordinary ears he hears the sounds of the three-thousand worlds.

The sounds of elephants, horses, carriages and oxen, the sounds of bells, chimes, conches and drums,

The sounds of zithers, lutes and harps, the sounds of flutes and pipes,

Pure and fine singing voices, which he hears without attachment,

The voices of countless kinds of people, which on hearing he can all understand.

He also hears the voices of devas, subtle and wondrous songs,

And hears the voices of men and women, of boys and girls.

In mountains, rivers and perilous valleys, the sounds of the kalavinka birds,

And the jivajiva and other birds, he hears all their cries.

The hell beings' many pains, all kinds of bitter and agonizing sounds,

The hungry ghosts pressed by hunger and thirst, sounds of seeking food and drink,

The asuras, who live beside the great ocean,

When they speak among themselves, produce loud voices.

This preacher of the Dharma, dwelling in this place,

Hears these many sounds from afar, without harming his faculty of hearing.

In the worlds of the ten directions, birds and beasts cry and call to one another,

The one who teaches the Dharma hears all of them here.

In the Brahma heavens above, Abhasvara and Subhakritsna,

Up to the Summit of Existence, the sounds of their speech,

The Dharma teacher, dwelling here, is able to hear them all.

All the assembly of bhikkhus, and the bhikkhunis,

Whether reading and reciting the scriptures or teaching them to others,

The Dharma teacher, dwelling here, is able to hear them all.

Again, there are Bodhisattvas, who read and recite the sutra Dharma,

Or teach it to others, compile and explain its meaning,

All such sounds he is able to hear.

The Buddhas, the great sages and honored ones, who teach and transform beings,

In the great assemblies, expounding the subtle Dharma,

One who upholds this Lotus is able to hear it all.

In the three-thousand great-thousand worlds, the sounds inside and outside,

Down to the Avici hell and up to the Summit of Existence,

He hears all their sounds without harming his faculty of hearing,

Because his ear is keen, he can distinguish and know them all.

One who upholds this Lotus, though he has not attained the heavenly ear,

Using only the ear he was born with, already has merit like this.

(The Buddha continued:) "Furthermore, Sadaparibhuta! If good men or good women receive and uphold this sutra, whether reading it, reciting it, explaining it or copying it, they accomplish eight hundred merits of the nose. With this pure faculty of the nose, they smell, throughout the three-thousand great-thousand world, above and below, inside and outside, all kinds of fragrances: the fragrance of sumana flowers, jati flowers, malika flowers, champaka flowers, patala flowers, the fragrance of red lotus, blue lotus and white lotus, the fragrance of flowering trees and fruit trees, sandalwood, aloeswood, tamalapatra and tagara, and thousands of myriads of kinds of blended incense, whether powdered, in pills or as paste incense. One who upholds this sutra, dwelling here, can distinguish them all. He further knows separately the smells of beings: the smell of elephants, horses, oxen and sheep, the smell of men, women, boys and girls, and the smell of grass, trees, thickets and forests, whether near or far, all the various smells he hears and distinguishes without error. One who upholds this sutra, though dwelling here, also smells the fragrance of the devas in the heavens: the fragrance of the parijata and kovidara trees, and of mandarava flowers, great mandarava flowers, manjushaka flowers, great manjushaka flowers, sandalwood, aloeswood and all kinds of powdered incense and mixed flower fragrances, the fragrance produced by such heavenly fragrances blended together, he knows it all. He also smells the fragrance of the bodies of the devas: the fragrance when Indra is in his Victory Palace, enjoying the five desires in play; when he is in the Hall of Wondrous Dharma, teaching the Dharma to the devas of the Trayastrimsha heaven; when he is playing in the gardens; and the fragrance of the bodies of the other devas, men and women, he smells all of them from afar. In this way it extends up to the Brahma world, and the fragrance of the bodies of devas up to the Summit of Existence, he smells all of them, and also the incense burned by the devas. And the fragrance of shravakas, the fragrance of pratyekabuddhas, the fragrance of Bodhisattvas and the fragrance of the Buddhas' bodies, he smells all of them from afar and knows where they are. Though he smells these fragrances, his faculty of smell is not harmed and not mistaken, and if he wishes to distinguish them and tell them to others, his recollection is not wrong."

Then the World-Honored One, wishing to restate this meaning, spoke in verse:

"This person's nose is pure, in this world,

Whether fragrant or foul things, he smells and knows all kinds.

Sumana and jati, tamalapatra and sandalwood,

Aloeswood and cassia fragrance, the fragrance of all kinds of flowers and fruits,

And he knows the smell of beings, the smell of men and women,

When the preacher of the Dharma dwells far away, he smells the fragrance and knows where he is.

The great mighty wheel-turning king, the lesser wheel-turners and their sons,

The ministers and palace people, he smells the fragrance and knows where they are.

The precious jewels worn on the body, and the treasures stored in the ground,

The jewel women of the wheel-turning king, he smells the fragrance and knows where they are.

The adornments of people, clothes and necklaces,

The various perfumes applied, he smells the fragrance and knows their bodies.

When devas walk or sit, play or show divine transformations,

One who upholds this Lotus smells the fragrance and can know it all.

The flowers and fruits of trees, and the fragrance of butter and oil,

The sutra-holder dwelling here knows where they are.
