The Sutra Spoken by Vimalakirti, Middle Volume

Later Qin (姚秦) · translated by Jiu Moluoshen (鳩摩羅什譯) · Volume 6 / 9

and at once he goes to their houses and teaches them to turn toward the Buddha path.

The classics and writings, spells and arts, the many crafts and skills,

he shows himself practicing all of these to benefit the multitudes of beings.

All the worldly paths and teachings, he leaves home within them all,

and so dispels people's confusion and keeps them from falling into wrong views.

Sometimes he becomes the sun or moon or a deva, or a Brahma king, lord of a world,

sometimes he becomes earth and water, and sometimes wind and fire.

When there are plagues in a kalpa, he appears as medicinal herbs,

若有服之者,除病消眾毒;

and those who take them are cured of illness and rid of many poisons;

when there is famine in a kalpa, he appears in the form of food and drink,

先救彼飢渴,卻以法語人;

first saving them from hunger and thirst, and then teaching them the Dharma;

when there are weapons and war in a kalpa, he gives rise to compassion for them,

teaching those beings and bringing them to dwell in a land without strife.

If there is a great battle, he stands among them with equal strength,

the Bodhisattva shows his majestic power, subdues them and brings peace.

In all the lands, wherever there are hells,

輒往到於彼,勉濟其苦惱;

he goes there at once, striving to relieve their suffering;

in all the lands, where animals devour one another,

he appears born there, to bring them benefit.

He shows himself enjoying the five desires, and also shows himself practicing dhyana,

making the mind of Mara confused, so that he cannot find an opening.

A lotus growing in fire can be called rare,

and practicing dhyana while in desire is rare in just this way.

Or he appears as a courtesan, to draw in those fond of beauty,

先以欲鉤牽,後令入佛智;

first catching them with the hook of desire, and then bringing them into the Buddha's wisdom;

or he becomes a head man of a town, or a caravan leader of merchants,

a national preceptor or a great minister, to bring blessings and benefit to beings.

For those who are poor, he appears as an inexhaustible treasury,

and so encourages them to arouse the mind of bodhi.

For those who are proud in heart, he appears as a strongman for them,

subduing every kind of arrogance and bringing them to dwell in the unsurpassed path.

For the fearful multitude, he stands before them to comfort them,

first giving them fearlessness, and then causing them to arouse the mind of the Way.

Or he appears free of lust as a sage with the five spiritual powers,

guiding the multitudes of beings and bringing them to dwell in precepts, patience and loving-kindness.

Seeing those who need attendants, he appears as a servant for them,

and once he has pleased their minds, he then awakens in them the mind of the Way,

according to what they need, so they may enter the Buddha path,

by the power of good skillful means, he is able to supply them with all they need.

Such paths are immeasurable, his practice has no limit,

his wisdom has no limit, and he delivers countless beings.

Even if all the Buddhas, over immeasurable millions of kalpas,

praised his merit, they still could not exhaust it.

Who, hearing such a Dharma, would not arouse the mind of bodhi?

Except those who are unworthy, dull and without wisdom."

A Bodhisattva in the assembly named Dharmasvara said: "Sirs! Arising and ceasing are two. Dharmas are originally not born, and so now they also do not cease; to attain this acceptance of the non-arising of phenomena is to enter the Dharma gate of non-duality."
