Feng shui has traditionally divided into two approaches. The form school reads the shape of the land and the layout of buildings; the qi school takes a bearing with the compass and calculates from the cycles of periods and flying stars. They are not opposed, and most practitioners draw on both.
This is the second largest category after Yi studies. The material runs from early burial-siting theory to modern Xuan Kong works, and the vocabulary shifted considerably between periods: the same term can mean quite different things in two different books.
How to read this branch
Establish whether a book belongs to the form school or the qi school before working through its rules. Mixing the vocabulary of the two is the commonest source of misreading here.
