He was a son of the Lian family of Xingtai. He first called at the patriarchal seats, travelling through Heng, Lu, Min, and Shu. Once he was passing through the deep valley of Fenglin when suddenly he came upon a treasure revealed. His companions looked at one another, meaning to take it. The master said: 'The ancients, hoeing the garden, touched gold as if it were broken tiles. Wait until I have thatch over my head — I shall need this to supply the monks of the four quarters.' Having said this, he left it and went on. He paid homage to Touzi. Zi asked: 'Where did you lodge last night?' The master said: 'In the unmoving bodhimanda.' Zi said: 'If you say unmoving, how did you get here?' The master said: 'Could coming here be movement?' Zi said: 'So you lodged where there is no lodging.' Touzi silently approved him. Soon he resided at Guanyin, and his assembly often numbered several hundred. When Emperor Gaozu of Zhou and Emperor Shizong were still in hiding, each time they climbed to his abbot's quarters they invariably paid him their respects. When they came to the throne they specially bestowed on him a purple robe and the title Master of Pure Precepts. When the time of his death came, after admonishing his disciples he passed away with a serene face and joined palms.
