Ascending the hall, he said: 'The sages from the first have appeared in the world for the sake of one great matter and have announced it to one another in turn. Do you people understand? If you do not, it is no easy thing.' A monk asked, 'What is the one great matter?' The master said, 'Are you not announcing it wrongly?' He said, 'Then the student has no doubt.' The master said, 'What about the film over the eye?' A monk asked, 'The Buddhas of the three ages are all transmitters of words; whose words do they transmit?' The master said, 'Listen.' He said, 'What words are they?' The master said, 'You are no Zhong Qi.' A monk asked, 'What is the student's eye?' The master said, 'Do not scatter more sand.'

A monk asked, 'The king and lords have requested your life, and you are the Dharma heir of Yishan. As for the word of the locked mouth, please, master, do not be mistaken.' The master said, 'Good.' He said, 'Then I deeply receive the honored one's compassion.' The master said, 'Do not dull people.' A monk asked, 'Not violating the school's style and not injuring the meaning of things — please, master, speak it with a full mouth.' The master said, 'Is today not the opening of the hall?' A monk asked, 'The flame continues Xuefeng and the seal transmits Chaojue. Not going against things, not betraying people, not standing at the head — what do you say right now?' The master said, 'Betraying is what is said.' He said, 'Then you well match the words that came, and the shallow and deep are already distinguished.' The master said, 'You too must know good from bad.'

How will you people understand it?' A monk asked, 'The student wishes to see the reverend master's original face.' The master said, 'There are words in the cave; go and realize them yourself.' He said, 'Then I will not get to see it.' The master said, 'Clearly. The traveler's road is as far as the sky; the lord's gate is as deep as the sea.'

Ascending the hall, he said: 'Virtuous Chan ones, if you want to discuss Chan and speak of the Way, to raise and sing the school's style — as for one's own portion, on the tip of a single hair there are countless Buddhas turning the great Dharma wheel, and within a single dust mote the jewel king's land appears. The Buddha speaks, living beings speak, mountains and rivers and the great earth all speak at once, and it has never been interrupted. Like King Vaishravana, who from beginning to end never sought treasure outside. Since each has such a family style, who is lacking? You must not go looking for it from others.' A monk asked, 'What is the nature of the Dharma realm?' The master said, 'Within your body there are the ten thousand images.' He said, 'How does one realize it?' The master said, 'In an empty valley seeking sound, you go looking further for root and branch.'

Ascending the hall, he said: 'It has never been momentarily lost, and its whole body is present before you. To say this much is already going beyond one's share. Since it cannot be said this way, how should one say it before the brothers? Is it that where there is no Way one does not receive the Way? Do not misunderstand.' A monk asked, 'What is the samadhi present before one?' The master said, 'Why wait for more talk?' A monk asked, 'My own matter is not yet clear; I beg the master to instruct me.' The master said, 'Why not bow in thanks?' A monk asked, 'What is the family style of Dongchan?' The master said, 'One person transmits a falsehood, ten thousand people transmit it as truth.'

I wonder whether leave will be granted or not. If you have not heard that leave is granted, then whoever speaks first is at fault. Take care.' A monk asked, 'The one who is always present through the twelve hours — does he deserve the offerings of gods and men?' The master said, 'He does not deserve them.' He said, 'Why does he not deserve them?' The master said, 'Because he is always present.' He said, 'What about one who is always absent — does he deserve them?' The master said, 'In the year of the donkey.' A monk asked, 'Please, master, answer the words without host or guest.' The master said, 'Ask it from the place without host or guest.'

Ascending the hall, he said: 'Assembly, this is exactly where you must put forth effort; by no means take it lightly.' A monk asked, 'The one phrase that Yishan heard directly — please, master, say it for the student.' The master said, 'Do not report it wrongly to others later.'

One day he entered the Buddha hall at Zhaoqing and, pointing at a bowl, asked the hall keeper, 'What bowl is this?' The hall keeper said, 'The Medicine Master's bowl.' The grand tutor said, 'I have only heard of a dragon-subduing bowl.' The hall keeper said, 'When a dragon comes, it will be subdued.' As for this monk, he should be called back and given a good beating.' The grand tutor said, 'What state of mind is that?' Changqing said, 'I nearly let it pass.' Once the grand tutor came to Zhaoqing and they were boiling tea, with Senior Lang and Mingzhao holding the kettle. Suddenly the tea kettle was overturned.
