Baoshou gave a shout in return.

The Master struck him. The monk laughed aloud and went out. The Master said, 'Today I am badly beaten.'
定上座
Upadhyaya Ding
At first he called on Linji and asked, 'What is the great meaning of the Buddha dharma?' Linji got down from the meditation platform and seized him. The Master started to deliberate. Linji gave him a slap. The Master stood pondering. A monk nearby said, 'Upadhyaya Ding, why do you not bow?' The Master was just bowing when he suddenly had a great awakening. Later he traveled south and on the road met three men: Yantou, Xuefeng, and Qinshan. Yantou asked, 'Where has the Upadhyaya come from?' The Master said, 'From Linji.' Yantou said, 'Ten thousand blessings on the Reverend.' The Master said, 'The Reverend has already passed from the world.' Yantou said, 'We three came especially to pay our respects, but our slender merit did not meet him. We do not know what words he spoke in his day; please, Upadhyaya, bring up one or two of them.' The Master then brought up how Linji ascended the hall and said, 'On the lump of red flesh there is a true person of no rank, who constantly goes in and out at the face-gate of all you people. Those who have not yet verified it, look!' At that time a monk asked, 'What is the true person of no rank?' Linji got down from the platform and grabbed him, saying, 'Speak, speak!' The monk started to deliberate. Linji pushed him away and said, 'The true person of no rank—what is he but a dried shit-stick?' Yantou could not help putting out his tongue. Xuefeng said, 'Linji is very much like a white-handed thief.' Qinshan said, 'Why did he not say, on the lump of red flesh there is no true person of no rank?' The Master then grabbed him and said, 'The true person of no rank and no true person of no rank—how far apart are they? Speak quickly, speak quickly!' Qinshan, being held, turned yellow and blue in the face and could not get a word out. Yantou and Xuefeng said, 'This newly ordained one does not know good from bad and has offended the Upadhyaya. We beg your compassion.' The Master said, 'Were it not for these two old fellows, I would have smashed this bed-wetting devil to death.' When the Master was at a feast in the prefectural town, he was sitting on the bridge on his way back when he met three masters of the lecture seat. One of them said, 'What is the deep place of the Chan river, that one must fathom it to the bottom?' The Master grabbed him and made as if to throw him off the bridge. The other two masters came forward to remonstrate: 'Do not take offense at the Upadhyaya. We beg your compassion.' The Master said, 'Were it not for these two masters, I would have made him fathom it to the bottom.'

He left Linji and called on Deshan. Deshan had barely seen him when he got down from the meditation platform and made as if to draw out his sitting cloth. The Master said, 'Set that aside for now. If someone comes whose mind and surroundings are one, what will you say to him, so as not to be censured by every quarter?' Deshan said, 'You are still three steps behind the old days. Come out as a different master.' The Master shouted. Deshan was silent. The Master said, 'I have sealed up this old fellow's throat.' And he shook out his sleeve and left. (When Weishan heard of it he said, 'Though Upadhyaya Huo got the better of it, what can he do about covering his ears while stealing the bell?') Again he called on Baizhang. After tea, Baizhang said, 'There is a matter I would like to ask about; may I?' The Master said, 'Happily it is beyond words—why need a bowl of tea?' Baizhang said, 'If so, then I am permitted to ask.' Baizhang said, 'You have taken Annan, and now you worry about the north of the passes.' The Master opened his chest and said, 'Like this, not like this.' Baizhang said, 'Still it is hard to grasp, still it is hard to grasp.' The Master said, 'To know is to get it; to know is to get it.' (Yangshan said, 'If someone does not know where these two men stand, he is quite extraordinary. If one cannot tell, he is very much like a man who loses his way in broad daylight.')

Ascending the hall: 'On the lump of red flesh, a wall stands a thousand fathoms.' A monk asked, 'On the lump of red flesh, a wall stands a thousand fathoms—is this not what the Reverend said?' The Master said, 'Yes.' The monk then overturned the meditation platform. The Master said, 'This blind donkey is making wild trouble.' The monk started to deliberate, and the Master struck him. He asked a monk where he had recently come from. The monk said, 'Long Water.' The Master said, 'Flowing east, flowing west.' The monk said, 'In any case, not like that.' The Master said, 'How then?' The monk said, 'Take care,' and left. The Master struck him. A monk came to call. The Master raised his whisk. The monk said, 'Today you have lost a point.' The Master put down the whisk. The monk said, 'Still this thing remains.' The Master struck him. He asked a monk, 'Where have you recently come from?' The monk said, 'Xiangzhou.' The Master said, 'What have you come to do?' The monk said, 'Especially to bow to the Reverend.' The Master said, 'It happens that old Baoying is not in.' The monk shouted. The Master said, 'I told you he is not in—what are you shouting for?' The monk shouted again. The Master struck him. The monk bowed. The Master said, 'This blow should really be you striking me, but for now I strike you. I want these words to spread widely. Blind fellow, go into the hall.' When the Reverend Siming had not yet taken up residence at the Western Court, he came to call and, after bowing, said, 'I have no greeting to offer. Coming from Xuzhou, I obtained a Jiangxi razor and present it to the Reverend.' The Master said, 'You came from Xuzhou—why did you obtain a Jiangxi razor?' Siming pinched the Master's hand once. The Master said, 'Attendant, take it away.' Siming brushed it off with his sleeve and left. The Master said, 'Alala, alala.' Ascending the hall: 'Every quarter has only the eye for the simultaneous peck and tap; it does not have the function of the simultaneous peck and tap.' A monk then asked, 'What is the function of the simultaneous peck and tap?' The Master said, 'An expert does not peck and tap; pecking and tapping at once is to miss it.' The monk said, 'This is still not where I am asking.' The Master said, 'Where are you asking?' The monk said, 'Miss.' The Master struck him. That monk was not convinced. Later, in Yunmen's assembly, he heard two monks bring up these words. One monk said, 'At that time Nanyuan's stick broke.' That monk suddenly awakened and rushed back to pay his respects. The Master had already passed away, so he called on Fengxue. As soon as Fengxue saw him he asked, 'Are you not the one who back then asked my late teacher about the simultaneous peck and tap?' The monk said, 'I am.' Fengxue said, 'How did you understand it then?' The monk said, 'At that time I was like a man walking in a lamp's shadow.' Fengxue said, 'You have understood.' A monk asked, 'When the ancient hall is rebuilt, what then?' The Master said, 'The bright hall's tiles stick out past the eaves.' The monk said, 'Then the adornments are complete.' The Master said, 'Cut the grass and the snake's head falls off.' A monk asked, 'What is the great meaning of the Buddha dharma?' The Master said, 'The source of immeasurable great illness.' The monk said, 'Please, Reverend, cure it.' The Master said, 'The world's physicians fold their hands.' A monk asked, 'What of one who comes alone on a single horse with a single spear?' The Master said, 'Wait until I cut my stick.' A monk asked, 'What is signless nirvana?' The Master said, 'Three dots in front, three dots behind.' The monk said, 'Signless nirvana—please, Reverend, certify and illumine it.' The Master said, 'Three dots before, three dots after.' A monk asked, 'When ordinary and sage dwell together, what then?' The Master said, 'Two cats, one fierce.' A monk asked, 'What is the seamless stupa?' The Master said, 'Eight flowers, nine cracks.' The monk said, 'Who is the person in the stupa?' The Master said, 'His hair is uncombed,'

(The Master continued:) 'and his face is unwashed.' A monk asked, 'What is the Buddha?' The Master said, 'When there is one, I will tell you.' The monk said, 'Then the Reverend has no Buddha.' The Master said, 'Just at the good point.' The monk said, 'What is the good point?' The Master said, 'Today is the thirtieth day.' He asked the garden head, 'Have the gourds blossomed yet?' The garden head said, 'They blossomed long ago.' The Master said, 'Have they set fruit?' The garden head said, 'Frost got them yesterday.' The Master said, 'What will the assembly eat?' The monk started to deliberate, and the Master struck him. He asked a monk, 'What is your name?' The monk said, 'Pushen.' The Master said, 'If you suddenly met a shit-stick, what then?' The monk then greeted him. The monk then struck him. A monk asked, 'When a man meets blue eyes, what then?' The Master said, 'Ghosts fight over a lacquer bucket.' A monk asked, 'When the dragon leaps in rivers and lakes, what then?' The Master said, 'A flash of anger, a flash of joy.' The monk said, 'When it pours out the pool and overturns the mountain, what then?' The Master said, 'The old crow has no beak.' A monk asked, 'When not a cloud in ten thousand miles, what then?' The Master said, 'A hungry tiger throws itself off the cliff.' A monk asked, 'When two kings meet, what then?' The Master said, 'At the crossroads, blowing a shakuhachi.' A monk asked, 'What is the campaka grove?' The Master said, 'Ghosts weary of arrows.' A monk asked, 'What is the diamond indestructible body?' The Master said, 'This old monk is under your feet.' The monk shouted. The Master said, 'Not yet.' The monk shouted again. The Master struck him. A monk asked, 'When a person of the highest faculties comes, does the Reverend still receive him?' The Master said, 'I receive him.' The monk said, 'Then please, Reverend, receive me.' The Master said, 'I am glad to be on equal terms with you.' A monk asked, 'The Patriarch's meaning and the teaching's meaning—are they the same or different?' The Master said, 'Minister Wang, Vice-Director Li.' The monk said, 'What is the purport?' The Master said, 'Ox-head south, horse-head north.' A monk asked, 'What is the meaning of the Patriarch's coming from the West?' The Master said, 'Five sons, two daughters.' A monk asked, 'I intend to put forward one question—what does the Reverend think?' The Master said, 'What case is it?' The monk said, 'Yes.' The Master said, 'I let you off thirty blows.' A monk asked, 'What is the master of Baoying?' The Master said, 'Big ladle, small bowl.' He asked a monk, 'Where have you recently come from?' The monk said, 'Longxing.' The Master said, 'Did you set out by way of Yexian or not?' The monk shouted. The Master said, 'I ask you nicely, and you fly into a rage—why?' The monk said, 'You cannot call it flying into a rage.' The Master shouted in turn and said, 'Since you fly into a rage, I also fly into a rage. Come here. I have committed an immeasurable offense and you have committed an immeasurable offense. Blind fellow, go into the hall.' He asked a monk, 'Where have you recently come from?' The monk said, 'Xiangzhou.' The Master said, 'What sort of thing comes like this?' The monk said, 'Reverend, try and say.' The Master said, 'The one who just now bowed.' The monk said, 'Wrong.' The Master said, 'What is wrong with the one who bowed?' The monk said, 'A second offense will not be forgiven.' The Master said, 'Thirty years of riding horses, and today a donkey knocks me over. Blind fellow, go into the hall.' A monk asked, 'Where have all the sages gone?' The Master said, 'If not to heaven, then into hell.' The monk said, 'And what about the Reverend?' The Master said, 'Do you know where old Baoying has gone?' The monk started to deliberate, and the Master gave a whisk-blow and said, 'Do you know the one who takes the whisk-blow?' The monk said, 'I do not understand.' The Master said, 'The true command is yours to carry out.' And he gave another whisk-blow.

He asked Deshan, 'Where have all the sages gone?' Deshan said, 'What, what?' The Master said, 'A flying dragon horse is commanded; the lame turtle sticks out its head.' Deshan then dropped the matter. The next day, coming out from bathing, he passed tea to Deshan. Deshan clapped him on the back and said, 'How about yesterday's public case?' The Master said, 'This old fellow has only today caught a glimpse.' Deshan again dropped the matter. The Master wandered to Xiangzhou and arrived at the assembly of the Reverend Huayan. One day Huayan ascended the hall and said, 'Assembly, today if there are descendants of Linji, Deshan, Gaoting, Dayu, Niaoke, or Chuanzi, no need for hows and whats—just come single-bladed and straight in. Huayan will certify you.' The Master came forward, bowed, rose, and shouted. Huayan also shouted. The Master shouted again. Huayan also shouted. The Master bowed, rose, and said, 'Assembly, look at this old fellow's total defeat.' He shouted once more, clapped his hands, and returned to the assembly. Huayan left the seat and returned to the abbot's quarters. At that time Fengxue was the Vinaya Master, and he went up to greet him. Huayan said, 'Vinaya Master, you have come. I cannot bear that Shoukuo just now twisted this old monk about. Wait till I gather the assembly and give him a beating and drive him out.' Fengxue said, 'Driving him out is too late. It was the Reverend's own words that went too far. He is a descendant of Linji; that is just how they are.' Huayan then calmed down. Fengxue came down and reported this to the Master. The Master said, 'What reason did you have to talk that fellow around? Before I asked, I was already due for a blow. If my words had stood, that would have been it. Now that he has not struck, my words are hung up.' Fengxue said, 'Even so, they have already spread through the world.'

A monk asked, 'What is the monastery?' The Master said, 'Thorns and thickets.' The monk said, 'What is the person in the monastery?' The Master said, 'A badger and a raccoon dog.' A monk asked, 'What is the unchanging thing?' The Master said, 'The stone for beating cloth.' A monk asked, 'What is Linji's one shout?' The Master said, 'A crossbow of a thousand catties is not triggered for a field mouse.' The monk said, 'Where is the Reverend's compassion?' The Master struck him. The Upadhyaya Congyi arrived at the dharma seat; for ten days he would often say, 'Never mind people who understand the Buddha dharma—there is not even a person who can raise a case.' The Master heard and kept silent about it. On another day, when Congyi entered the dharma hall, the Master called him. Congyi raised his head. The Master said, 'Wrong.' Congyi took three or four steps forward. The Master said again, 'Wrong.' Congyi came closer. The Master said, 'Those two wrongs just now—was the Upadhyaya wrong or is old Siming wrong?' Congyi said, 'It is Congyi who is wrong.' The Master said, 'Wrong, wrong.' Then he said, 'Upadhyaya, stay here for the summer and I will discuss these two wrongs with you.' Congyi was unwilling and left. Later he took up residence at Mount Tianping in Xiangzhou. Whenever he brought up the earlier words he said, 'When I was wandering, an evil wind blew me to Ruzhou, where the elder of the Western Court examined me and laid down two wrongs in a row. He even wanted me to stay for the summer so he could discuss them with me. I did not say I was wrong then. When I set out southward, I already knew I was wrong.' (Shoushan Nian said, 'Judging by how Tianping understood it, he had not even dreamed of the Western Court. Why? The words are there.')
The Venerable Baoshou (Second Generation)
He had first served as offering master under the former Baoshou. Baoshou asked him: 'Before your parents were born, return to me your original face.' The master stood until deep into the night, but his words did not match. The next day he took his leave. Baoshou said: 'Where are you going?' The master said: 'Yesterday I received the Master's question and did not match it. I am going south to consult good friends.' Baoshou said: 'The south forbids summer but not winter. Here we forbid winter but not summer. You may spend the summer as a townsman. If it is the buddhadharma, then in the marketplace, amid the vast red dust, it ever preaches the true dharma.' The master did not dare to disobey. One day in the street he saw two men quarreling. One swung a fist and said: 'So you have got this facelessness.' At that moment the master was greatly awakened. He ran to see Baoshou. Before he could say a word, Baoshou said: 'You have understood. No need to speak.' The master then bowed. When Baoshou was about to pass away, he instructed Sansheng to invite the master to open the hall. On the day the master opened the hall, Sansheng pushed out a monk. The master at once struck him. Sansheng said: 'Acting for others like this, you not only blind this monk's eye, you blind the eyes of the whole city of Zhenzhou.' (Fayan said: 'Where is the place of blinding people's eyes?') The master threw down his staff and returned to his quarters. A monk asked: 'Not occupying the threshold, pray, Master, do not slander.' The master said: 'Do not.' The monk asked: 'What of when one offers all kinds of adornment and diligent offerings?' The master said: 'Do not defile my mind-field.' When the master was about to pass away, he said to his disciples: 'Do you know the place where I walk?' The disciples said: 'We know the Master sits long and does not lie down.' The master then called a monk to come closer. The monk came closer. The master said: 'Go. You are not my kin.' Having spoken, he passed away.
