Instructing Virtue Class
Charting guides: Da Liu Ren Chart Calculator, Jin Kou Jue Chart
The song says: The nobleman stands at the卯 (Mao) in February and the酉 (You) in August, as卯 and酉 are the gates where the sun and moon rise and set. When the nobleman is positioned here, it forms the foundation of the virtuous lesson. Taking the example of the sixth month, Jiazi day at the寅 (Yin) hour, one exactly reaches this gate. At this time, the two yang spirits, Chen and Wu, are behind the nobleman, while the two yin spirits, Shen and Xu, are ahead of the nobleman: thus, a minor official incurs a wrongdoing and is dismissed, while a higher official's position becomes even more esteemed. If suddenly the divination is done at the申 (Shen) hour instead, it becomes another pattern of "disguised appearance." When both yin and yang spirits are behind the nobleman, the gentleman receives a reward; but the petty person encounters this lesson and suffers unrest in body and mind. If it becomes the "wasted" pattern, where both yin and yang spirits are ahead of the nobleman, then the gentleman suffers misfortune and depression, while the petty person becomes happy and content.
The song says: In the "Lide" divination, how are yin and yang divided? Take the month generals of卯 and酉 as the gates of the sun and moon. The Heavenly Stem Nobleman is then in a superior position, with respect and hierarchy determined by their positions. If the yin spirit wrongly takes the front position and the yang spirit falls behind, then high officials will be promoted while low officials will be in difficulty. Common people encountering this situation will face worries about moving their own lives and homes, and their spirits will be restless in dreams. They should worship the earth god, as February and August are the proper months for worship.
Zhongming said: Whenever the nobleman is positioned on the卯 or酉, it is called the励德 lesson. The卯 and酉 are the positions where yin and yang change, and the nobleman rises and falls from there. If the yin spirit of the day stem and day branch is positioned before the nobleman, the nobleman will not have guidance or followers, thus requiring 'retreating yin', which indicates that a minor official is dismissed from office - small people take advantage of power without being cautious or cultivating virtue, hence it is凶. If the yang spirit of the day stem and day branch is positioned after the nobleman, the nobleman will have someone leading the way in front and someone following behind, thus requiring 'advancing yang', which indicates that a gentleman is promoted - gentlemen recognize the right time and can practice benevolence and virtue, hence it is吉. This is the way of heaven punishing the arrogant and the licentious, and rewarding those with virtue, hence the lesson is called励德. This lesson benefits gentlemen but not small people, and it belongs to the structure of the随卦 in the I Ching, representing an image of uncertainty and change.
The divination text says: The yang spirit is in front leading the way, while the yin spirit follows behind, indicating that the gentleman will be fortunate and the petty person will be in danger; if the yin spirit is ahead and the yang spirit is behind, then the petty person will gain power while the gentleman loses opportunity. Specifically, on the yang side, there is a nobleman guiding, and on the yin side, the nobleman follows behind. If the yin spirit is ahead of the nobleman, then in a lawsuit the younger and inferior party will be punished; if the yang spirit is behind the nobleman, even if there is misfortune, it can be healed through moral cultivation. If the nobleman is positioned at卯 (Mao) or酉 (You) and the yang is ahead of the yin, then one should follow the line statement of the third line, "Attach to the great man, lose the small man," which signifies following the great person and abandoning the small one. If the yin is ahead of the yang, then one should follow the line statement of the second line, "Attach to the small man, lose the great man," which signifies following the small person and losing the great one, indicating a凶 (unfavorable) omen.
The Jin Gui Jing says, "If the Heavenly Ethical Official is present at the gate of the sun and moon, one will gain the name of moral cultivation." When making a judgment, one should look at the heavenly generals associated with the yin and yang spirits: the virtuous person signifies promotion and advancement, but one should avoid having the Hekui and Tiangang falling on one's birth year. That would be ominous; also, one should avoid long journeys, as there will be many thieves along the way. If the Xuanwu and Taiyin appear, there will be many obscure and unclear matters.所谓阴 refers to the yin spirits of the day stem and day branch, which are the second and fourth lessons, belonging to a low position, and should not rashly stand before the nobleman; if they do, they will surely be demoted.所谓阳 refers to the yang spirits of the day stem and day branch, which are the first and third lessons (the original text here says "first and second lessons," which conflicts with the later statement "yin refers to the second and fourth lessons," so it should be a mistake and the correct reading is first and third lessons), belonging to a high position, and should not fall behind the nobleman; if they do, they will surely be promoted.
It is also said that the nobleman, or Tianyi Guiren, stands at the gate of the second and eighth months, and thus yin and yang lose their proper virtue. At the time of spring equinox, the卯 (Mao) sign marks the crossing of the two energies, and yin takes over the yang energy; at the time of autumn equinox, the酉 (You) sign marks the crossing of the two energies, and yang takes over the yin energy. Because of this exchange of yin and yang at this gate, when the nobleman is added upon it and initiates the transmission, this noble energy rises and falls with the movement of yin and yang. A petty official relies on subordinates to make a living: if both the yin spirits of the day stem and day branch are placed before Tianyi and located in the outer position, the nobleman cannot be guided or followed, which is called "Guì Tuì" (retreat of the nobleman), and thus indicates the petty official being stripped of his position. A gentleman relies onofficial stipend (salary) for sustenance: if both the yang spirits of the day stem and day branch are placed within the position of Tianyi, and the nobleman leads the way, this is called "Guì Jìn" (advancement of the nobleman), and thus indicates the gentleman's promotion. A petty official wishing to advance must wait for the right time; if he is stubborn and does not reflect on his conduct, he will only fall continuously. Only after falling will he be willing to reflect. A gentleman, when retreating, withdraws and remains hidden; when advancing, he spreads virtue and benevolence, and becomes even more self-reflective. Therefore, the pattern where yin is in front and yang is behind is called "Lì Dé Kè" (Encouragement of Virtue). This lesson also indicates that ordinary people are unsettled in their dwellings.
The flow of energy passes through the gates of the sun and moon, which are the channels for the movement of yin and yang. Therefore, it is favorable to yang and unfavorable to yin. This gate opens and closes unpredictably, so it is favorable to action and unfavorable to stillness. It is also a place of openness and brightness, so it is favorable for public affairs and unfavorable for private schemes. The nobleman, the most esteemed, stands at the critical point of life and death, advancement and retreat: the virtuous will be promoted, the unvirtuous will be demoted, and those who commit evil will be put to death. The nobleman shares the virtue of the gentleman; the petty person, upon seeing him, will feel ashamed and retreat. If the nobleman is in front, and the yang spirits of the day stem and day branch are behind the nobleman, then the hierarchy is properly established. On my side, there is the virtue of respecting superiors and retreating in humility, which is the quality of a person who knows moderation and is worthy of respect. The nobleman will surely recommend him to the realm of brightness and openness. If the petty person is in front of the nobleman, it is an act of arrogance and rebellion, and the consequence will be disaster—not merely demotion. Moreover, the position of a minor official has already reached its peak; how could there be no demotion? Not only are the petty persons without virtue and rebellious, but when they are in the highest position, the nobleman will surely demote them. In summary, only those with virtue are worthy of standing at the gate of the nobleman. Therefore, the name of this divination lesson is "Encouraging Virtue"—rewarding the virtuous and punishing the unvirtuous. When one encounters this lesson, the gentleman will have good fortune and the petty person will have misfortune. If the yin spirits are in front of the nobleman, the younger and inferior will be punished. If the yang spirits are behind the nobleman, even if one has illness, it can be cured through cultivating virtue.
It is also said that the Heavenly Stem of the Day and the Earthly Branch of the Day are considered as within the gate, which is the place where a gentleman conducts affairs, and a minor official cannot enter. A minor official can only reach there if he has committed a crime. If both the yin and yang spirits of the Day Stem and Day Branch are arranged after the Heavenly Stem of the Day, they are all within the gate, which conforms to the meaning of heaven's mandate, indicating that the gentleman will be promoted in official rank, while the petty person can only wait outside. If both the yin and yang spirits of the Day Stem and Day Branch are arranged before the Heavenly Stem of the Day, the nobleman cannot be guided or accompanied, and this is called the "treading water" lesson, which means that one's time is not favorable. At this time, petty officials and gentlemen are mixed together, and the petty official will be promoted while the gentleman will be demoted. Anything that starts from a humble position can still be handled, but if one suddenly attempts to seek high and mighty positions, it will not work. This lesson indicates that the gentleman is unable to find a stable place to reside.
Yuan Tiangang said: The hidden yin and yang spirits of the day stem and day branch are all placed after Tianyi, called "Wei Fu Ke." This indicates that a gentleman will be transferred to a higher position, while a minor official will be dismissed from his post; events will come about somewhat slowly. It is suitable for seeking major matters, but not for seeking minor ones. The rhyme says: When Tianyi arrives at the gate of the second and eighth, the hidden yin spirits of the day stem and day branch rush ahead at the gate; the hidden yang spirits of the day stem and day branch stand behind. This is the time of Li De, when the situation is difficult to stabilize and endure. There is instability above and below, and everywhere is unrest. In the midst of advancing and retreating, between nobility and commoners, only those in a position of honor benefit. Those with power can achieve fame and fortune, but they themselves cannot avoid a journey of migration.
It is also said that when Tianyi (the Nobleman) is added to the second and eighth gates, the yin and yang spirits of the day stem and day branch remain behind the Nobleman. This indicates a humble status and serving others, which is favorable only for secretly relying on the Nobleman to handle private matters. In addition, one should also take into account the twelve Heavenly Generals that are riding along, and carefully examine them in order, distinguishing their levels and determining their auspicious or inauspicious nature.
Here I clarify again: what is called yin refers to the second and fourth lessons; what is called yang refers to the first and third lessons. Yin belongs to a low position and must not be placed before the nobleman, for doing so will result in being dismissed. Yang belongs to a high position and must not be placed behind the nobleman, for doing so will result in promotion. This lesson indicates that ordinary people are anxious about themselves and their homes, experiencing dreams filled with fear. They should worship the earth deity, as February and August are the proper months for such worship. If the yin and yang spirits of the day stem and day branch are both before the nobleman, it is like the nobleman being away and everyone rushing forward, which is a sign of stagnation and no opportunity. The virtuous feel depressed, while the petty rejoice. If someone is careless and eagerly expects something, they may be considered to have a minor good omen. Otherwise, if they seek only in lowly places, that is also considered a minor good omen. If the person is originally of low status and serves as a subordinate, their request will be favorable. However, if the matter starts by reaching for high places, it will result in nothing.
Example: Divination on the day of Xinhai in the first lunar month at the hour of Yin. For the first lunar month, the general is placed on the hour of Yin, and all the heavenly gods are advanced nine positions relative to the earthly plate. The day stem is Xinhai, and the day stem's lodging palace is on Xu. On Xu, we find 'Xiaoji' (Wei), so 'Xiaoji' is associated with Xinhai. On Wei, we find 'Tiangang' (Chen), which is the yin god of the day stem. On the day branch Hai, we find 'Chuansong' (Shen); on Shen, we find 'Taiyi' (Si), which is the yin god of the day branch, and this is taken as the initiating transmission. The heavenly master is riding on 'Shengguang' (Wu) and is placed on You. 'Xiaoji' on Wei and 'Chuansong' on Shen are the yang gods of the day stem and day branch, and they are placed after the heavenly master. 'Tiangang' on Chen and 'Taiyi' on Si are their yin gods, but they are placed before the heavenly master. The positions that should be before are occupied by yin gods, and the positions that should be after are occupied by yang gods, so yin and yang are reversed, and neither is in its proper place, so we should support yang and suppress yin. Below is the lesson format. The top three lines are the three transmissions: the first transmission is Si, riding on Teng Snake; the middle transmission is Yin, which is a wealth hexagram as gold overcomes wood, riding on Gou Chen; the final transmission is Hai, which is a子孙 hexagram as gold generates water, riding on Baihu (the first transmission Si should correspond to the day stem Xinhai and be an official ghost, but the original text marks it as 'print', which is likely an error). Si advances nine positions to Yin, Yin advances nine positions to Hai, and the three transmissions are thus derived in sequence. The middle three lines are the four lessons, read from right to left as Chou/Yi, Xu/Chou, Shen/Hai, Si/Shen. According to the above, the first and second lessons should be Wei/Xinhai and Chen/Wei, but the original text has written them as the format for the day Yi, which is likely a transmission error, so we have recorded it as it is for reference. The third and fourth lessons, Shen/Hai and Si/Shen, match the main text. The bottom four lines are the heavenly and earthly plates: on the earthly plate, Si has寅, Wu has卯, Wei has辰, Shen has巳, You has午, Xu has未, Hai has申, Zi has酉, Chou has戌, Yin has亥, Mao has子, Chen has丑, which is exactly the arrangement of the general on the hour of Yin advancing nine positions, and it matches the main text's statements of 'Xiaoji is associated with Xinhai' and 'Taiyi is on Shen'.
The Lesson of the Stepson-in-Law
The song says: To recognize a lesson about a stepson-in-law, look for the pattern where the heavenly stem of the day is sent to the wife's family, and the god of the day branch comes to be on the day stem, only to be overcome by it, and is easily regarded as improper. The upper and lower parts are connected, and the native's age is used to serve as a tool for others. The matter concerned is a woman who brings her previous husband's child and remarries, but later also gains some honor and prosperity. For example, in a divination on the fifth month, on a Jiaxu day, with the hour stem added as Mao: the god of the day branch comes to be on the day stem and is overcome, exactly as described. This lesson is called a stepson-in-law. The person divining should think carefully about it and can only sigh deeply.
The song says: A赘婿 lesson occurs when the day stem is remotely and indirectly restrained by the day branch, and the day branch then turns back to affect the day stem, restraining the day stem itself. It is like a man living in his wife's house, or a woman taking her child to remarry someone else. The person wants to do something but the other party refuses, feeling oppressed and unable to act freely. It is like giving away one's son to be adopted by another family, with the wife taking charge of the household rather than the husband. The fortune and misfortune of this lesson are all related to the family. One only needs to examine the twelve heavenly generals to determine the cause of the matter. It also says: When the day branch affects the day stem, and the day stem in turn restrains the day branch, the day branch, being below, is the first to be affected. For people, this indicates being forced to marry into another family, with the person having no control over their own situation. The matter depends on others and requires waiting for news from outside. It is not about remarrying with the mother, but rather being forced to become a son-in-law of another family. The person feels restricted in all aspects, unable to move freely. Even though they try their best, they can only receive empty promises.
Zhongming said: Whenever the day stem overcomes the day branch, and the day branch then acts upon the day stem as the initiating transmission, it is called the赘婿 lesson. The day stem represents the husband, and the day branch represents the wife; whatever is overcome by the day stem is considered as the wife. When divining about marriage or ordinary matters concerning one's own life, this method is used. However, when divining specifically about marriage, it is not interpreted this way: the moving party is considered the husband, belonging to the day stem, and the stationary, home-based party is considered the wife, belonging to the day branch. Now, the stationary day branch comes to act upon the moving day stem, just like a man marrying into his wife's family, hence called赘婿. This lesson indicates discord among brothers, living in someone else's house, and lack of freedom; it corresponds to the body of the Traveler hexagram from the Yi Jing, and is a lesson about seeking wealth while away from home.
The divination says: This reading indicates that one should be willing to compromise and yield to others, often being restricted and controlled. Pregnancy is delayed, travelers are delayed; wealth and reputation can be achieved, but illness and legal matters remain unresolved. In military matters, it is advantageous for the opposing side, and initiating the attack is the best strategy. Consider two scenarios: if the day stem's virtue is added to the day branch, it is the day stem overcoming the day branch, with the superior element overcoming the inferior, meaning the male over the female, which benefits the elders but not the younger ones, and favors action over stillness; in military matters, it is better to be the guest force, and to strike first in battle. If the day branch comes to affect the day stem, the day branch then overcomes the day stem, with the inferior element overcoming the superior, meaning the female over the male, where the younger ones challenge the elders and the elders cannot tolerate it; in military matters, the side that was originally the guest becomes the host, and when others attack, I can defeat them. If White Tiger appears, it indicates injury or death; if Gou Chen appears, it indicates conflict; if Zhu Que appears, it indicates disputes; if Teng Snake appears, it indicates fear or alarm. If the day stem and the initiating transmission are in a weak and confined state, the illness may be contagious and not resolve, corresponding to the image of the Traveler hexagram's line nine three, "losing his servant." If Heavenly Empress appears, it indicates receiving favor; if Heavenly Ethereal appears, it indicates encountering officials; if Liu He appears, it indicates private matters; if Tai Chang appears, it indicates food and drink. If the day stem and the initiating transmission are prosperous and strong, any endeavor will succeed, corresponding to the image of the Traveler hexagram's line six two, "obtaining a servant," which is a favorable omen.
Yuan Tiangang said: The赘婿 lesson indicates that the person is living in someone else's house and cannot make decisions on their own. If the day branch weakens and lacks strength, they will certainly not have even a single proper room to live in. However, if the middle transmission and final transmission have saving deities, and the native's year pillar has strength without punishment or harm, and there are auspicious deities and good generals, it will transform into the "赘婿 in power pattern," and the outcome will be different.
Here are various combinations of day branches in the context of a赘婿 lesson: On Jia Xu day, Tiangang is on Jia; on Yi Wei day, Xiaoji is on Yi; on Bing Shen day, Chuansong is on Shen; on Jia Chen day, Tiangang is on Jia; on Yi Chou day, Daji is on Yi. These are instances where the day branch's deity is placed on the day stem and then subjected to mutual control. Based on this, one determines fortune and misfortune, indicating harm to the young by the old, family members mutually attacking each other, internal disorder and chaos, and internal family conflicts: subordinates scheming against their superiors, sons scheming against their fathers, and servants scheming against their masters. Further细分 by each day: On Jia Xu day, Tiangang is on Jia, indicating disputes over women's clothing; on Jia Xu day, Tiangang is on Jia, also indicating disputes over food and drink and verbal conflicts; on Gui Si day, Taiyi is on Gui, indicating disputes over clothing; on Ji Hai day, Dengming is on Hai, indicating a woman being frightened and fleeing; on Ding You day, Congkui is on You, indicating separation; on Ren Wu day, Shengguang is on Wu, indicating disputes over property and land, along with a woman's joy and fire-related disturbances; on Wu Zi day, Shenhou is on Zi, indicating illness or death of children and women, or their seeking money; on Bing Zi day, Chuansong is on Shen, indicating gossip about others; on Xin Mao day, Taichong is on Mao, indicating damage to large items. Another interpretation: Tiangang on Jia indicates disputes and lawsuits for someone traveling; Xiaoji on Yi indicates worries about women and food; Taiyi on Gui indicates disputes over women's clothing; Dengming on Si indicates disputes over money and cloth; Congkui on Ding indicates the desire to live apart and divide property; Shengguang on Ren indicates lawsuits over property and land, along with a woman's joy and fire-related disturbances; Shenhou on Wu indicates illness or death of women or their immorality, and if it is accompanied by Shenhou, it indicates immorality among relatives.
For example, on the day of Jiaxu in the second lunar month at the hour of Yin, the divination indicates that the young harm the old, family members mutually control each other, subordinates scheme against their superiors, sons oppress their fathers, and servants plot against their masters. All these issues arise from within the family. Here is the divination chart. The top three lines are the three transmissions: the first transmission is戌, with Jia wood controlling earth as the wealth hexagram, riding on Liu He; the middle transmission is午, with wood generating fire as the sons hexagram, riding on Baihu; the final transmission is寅, which is the same as Jia wood, representing the brothers hexagram, riding on Tianhou. The middle three lines are the four lessons, read from right to left: the day stem Jia is lodged in寅, with戌 on top of寅, forming the first lesson戌/甲, riding on Liu He; using戌 as the lower, with午 on top of戌, forming the second lesson午/戌, riding on Baihu; the day branch is戌, with午 on top of戌, forming the third lesson午/戌, riding on Baihu; using午 as the lower, with寅 on top of午, forming the fourth lesson寅/午, riding on Tianhou. The day branch戌 is placed on the day stem's lodged palace寅 and is controlled by Jia wood, which represents the image of a son-in-law. The bottom four lines are the heaven and earth plates: in the second lunar month, with the hour of Yin, the heaven plate gods are all eight positions ahead of the earth plate. Therefore, the earth plate is as follows:巳 is on top of丑,午 is on top of寅,未 is on top of卯,申 is on top of辰,酉 is on top of巳,戌 is on top of午,亥 is on top of未,子 is on top of申,丑 is on top of酉,寅 is on top of戌,卯 is on top of亥,辰 is on top of子.
Now looking at the day Jiachen: The Tiangang (Chen) is on Jia and is riding on Liu He, which governs clothing. In spring, the wood energy is strong, indicating the younger side; earth is in death qi, indicating the older side. The lower is attacking the upper, meaning the younger resents the older. Chen also represents the household, and the day stem is attacking it, indicating internal disorder and conflict. Liu He also governs the situation of women mediating. Below is the lesson format. The top three lines are the three transmissions: the first transmission is Chen, Jia wood is attacking earth as a wealth hexagram, riding on Liu He; the middle transmission is Wu, wood generates fire as the son hexagram, riding on Qinglong; the final transmission is Shen, metal attacks wood as the official ghost hexagram, riding on Baitu. The middle three lines are the four lessons, read from right to left: the day stem Jia is lodged in寅, with Chen on寅, forming the first lesson Chen/Jia, riding on Liu He; taking Chen as the lower, with Wu on Chen, forming the second lesson Wu/Chen, riding on Qinglong; the day branch is Chen, with Wu on Chen, forming the third lesson Wu/Chen, riding on Qinglong; taking Wu as the lower, with Shen on Wu, forming the fourth lesson Shen/Wu, riding on Baitu. The bottom four lines are the heaven and earth plates: all heavenly spirits are two positions ahead of the earth plates, so the earth plate Si has Wei, Wu has Shen, Wei has You, Shen has Xu, You has Hai, Xu has Zi, Hai has Chou, Zi has Yin, Chou has Mao, Yin has Chen, Mao has Si, Chen has Wu.
The above two divination patterns both indicate a situation where the young offend the old, and also suggest disputes over clothes involving women. Zhao Shi said: If the day branch is added to the day stem and is simultaneously attacked by the day stem and the riding general, and if the three transmissions and the heavenly general are mutually incompatible, the person's original intention is due to not seeing good fortune and thus feeling doubtful. Once they take action, they cannot control their own affairs. If this is about being imprisoned, they will eventually be released. If the heavenly general of the three transmissions falls on the卯 or酉, they will definitely have to move to another place.
The pattern of the dependent son-in-law holding power.
The song诀 says: When the image of a stepson-in-law is already formed in the chart, and both the Middle Transmission and Final Transmission also receive the saving deity; although the native's current year and destiny are accompanied by凶煞, they do not suffer punishment, but instead are close to auspicious deities and capable generals — this is called the lesson of the stepson-in-law holding power. Though the person is handling affairs on behalf of others, he can still hold power. Although the matters he deals with are not his own, he can make decisions independently and distinguish between importance and urgency. Generally, he is successful behind the scenes, and is most skillful in handling others' affairs. However, if these matters fall upon himself, they are mostly not completed; even if they are completed, they bring him no benefit.
The above discusses a赘婿 who is unable to act freely: seeing wealth, he seeks it, but his efforts do not bring satisfaction. If the accompanying Heavenly General is exactly the earth element deity, then all matters will be obstructed and unsmooth. In the situation where a赘婿 is in a position of authority, if the accompanying Heavenly General is the Azure Dragon and is prosperous and strong, it indicates that a nobleman will prepare wine and food to welcome him; if it is Tai Yin, there will be private matters; if it is Heavenly Empress or Tai Chang, there will be matters of financial exchange among relatives; if it is Vermilion Bird or Gou Chen, there will be disputes and quarrels; if it is Teng Snake or White Tiger, there will be matters of death and fear.
Example: Divination on an event on the day of Jiaxu in the tenth month at the hour of Wu. The Jia wood stem is remotely and indirectly overcoming the day branch Wu earth, and Wu is the Tiankui, which is also located on the lodgment palace of Jia. This forms a situation where the lower is attacking the upper; both sides are attacking the day stem, so the person is not at peace, hence called a stepson-in-law, indicating living in another household, bringing children along, and being dependent on others without autonomy. The fortune and misfortune are still determined by the celestial generals they are riding: if the celestial general is the Vermilion Bird, it indicates mutual harm within the family; if it is the White Tiger, it indicates mutual killing and injury within the family; if it is Gou Chen, it indicates mutual disputes within the family. It also says: if the celestial general is the White Tiger, Teng Snake, or Gou Chen, it indicates being oppressed and constrained by misfortune; if it is the Heavenly Empress, Tai Yin, or Black Tortoise, it indicates being oppressed and constrained by ambiguous and secret matters.
No illicit divination.
The four lessons are incomplete, and this lesson is called "no lust." For example, on the day of Yimao, if the time is added on Wu, and in the fifth month it is at Chou time, the yang spirit meets Tiangang at Chen, and Taiyi at Si as the yin spirit. The day stem cannot pair with a matching yang spirit, resulting in two women competing for one man. Another example is on the day of Yihai, in the second month at Si time. Wu is the yang spirit of the day branch, and Chou overlaps on Wu. The yang spirit of the day stem is Hai, but the yin spirit of the day stem cannot pair with Wu. This is called "incomplete"—the four lessons do not have four different upper spirits, and two pairs of male and female spirits are entangled. This lesson indicates secret affairs. Those involved may not feel any resentment. If there is a saving spirit, it should be related to bloodshed. If aInauspicious Spirit is present, there will be imprisonment or delays.
The song says: When both men and women are not properly matched, it is called "wu yin," which means that between yin and yang, two evil hearts arise. When two women compete for one man, it is because there are not enough men; when two men compete for one woman, it is because the woman is alone. When the upper part overcomes the lower part, it is because the upper part is too strong; when the lower part overcomes the upper part, it is really the wife's lack of virtue. The yang spirit refuses to go to the yin spirit to unite, and the yin spirit fears being harmed when it comes to the yang position. To understand specific examples, look at the lesson on the first day of the first month, with the time added to the卯 (Mao) position: the position of Shen (申) is Tian Gui (天魁), and the position of Zi (子) is Chuansong (传送). On the Jiazi day, the worry is on the position of Shen, because the metal is close to the wood of Jia, and Tian Gui must come to attack. The day stem and the day branch spirits are mixed, which is called the husband and wife losing the harmony of the zither and the瑟. Although there is a deep private feeling, Jia and Zi are originally water and wood that generate each other, and water also combines with metal, so it is ultimately confused.
This is the divination chart for the day of Jiazi in the first lunar month, at the hour of Mao, with no improper divination. The top three lines are the three transmissions: the first transmission is Xu, with Jia wood overcoming earth as the wealth hexagram, riding on Liu He; the middle transmission is Wu, with wood generating fire as the son hexagram, riding on Bai Hu; the final transmission is Yin, with Yin being the same as Jia wood as the brother hexagram, riding on Tian Hou. The bottom three lines are the four lessons, read from right to left: the day stem Jia is lodged in Yin, with Xu on Yin, forming the first lesson Xu/Jia, riding on Liu He; taking Xu as the lower, with Wu on Xu, forming the second lesson Wu/Xu, riding on Bai Hu; the day branch Zi, with Shen on Zi, forming the third lesson Shen/Zi, riding on Qing Long; taking Shen as the lower, with Chen on Shen, forming the fourth lesson Chen/Shen, riding on Xuan Wu. For the hour of Mao in the first lunar month, the heavenly plate gods are each eight positions ahead of the earthly plate. Thus, the four heavenly gods Xu, Wu, Shen, and Chen are arranged in this way; although there are four heavenly gods in the four lessons, they do not form a yin-yang relationship with the day stem and day branch, so it is judged as 'incomplete'. The heavenly and earthly plates listed below this chart are presented in a separate line, following this.
This passage is the last part of the previous lesson's lesson plate, which is the "Heaven and Earth Plate" diagram of twelve sections. The rules for drawing the plate in this book are as follows: the outer frame consists of twelve sections representing the fixed "Earth Plate." The top-left section is the Earth Plate's Si section, followed clockwise as Wu, Wei, Shen (top-right), You, Xu, Hai (bottom-right), Zi, Chou, Yin (bottom-left), Mao, Chen, and back to Si. The twelve characters written inside each section are the rotating "Heaven Plate" according to the time of the divination. Reading from the top-left section clockwise, the sequence is Chou, Yin, Mao, Chen, Si, Wu, Wei, Shen, You, Xu, Hai, Zi. This means the Heaven Plate's Chou is placed over the Earth Plate's Si, the Heaven Plate's Yin is placed over the Earth Plate's Wu, and so on, with each Heaven Plate section four positions behind its corresponding Earth Plate section. The "Month General" refers to the celestial stem that corresponds to the moon's position in the zodiac during the month. After the tenth month's Minor Snow, the "Gongcao" (Yin) is used in the寅 position. By placing the Month General "Yin" on the time of "Wu" and arranging the twelve spirits clockwise, the resulting sequence forms this Heaven Plate. The four lessons and three transmissions for the Jiazi day will all be taken from this Heaven Plate.
The Three Transmissions throughout the entire course only reveal the Yang spirit but not the Yin spirit that should be paired with it; such a course is called "no lust" or "no indulgence." The Yang spirit refers to the upper spirit derived from the Day Stem and Day Branch in the Four Lessons. The Yin spirit is the spirit obtained one level above these upper spirits. The Four Lessons should normally consist of paired Yin and Yang spirits, but in this case, only one side is present, leaving the pair incomplete, hence it is also called "incomplete." Divination in such a case usually results in matters that have a beginning but no end.
The day stem and day branch have heavenly and earthly spirits that mutually control each other. Additionally, the yin and yang combinations of the third and fourth lessons do not harmonize with each other. Such a lesson is named "Yinyu." It indicates hidden private affairs within, with matters mostly conflicting and agreements made not being honored. All parties involved harbor improper intentions, deceiving and scheming against each other. The hearts of one or two individuals are already not aligned, and the virtue and duty between them are incomplete. The two sides are constantly at war, each unable to fulfill their proper responsibilities. If further, the heavenly generals associated with private matters such as Heavenly Empress, Liu He, Black Tortoise, and Tai Yin enter the three transmissions through "fa yong," it indicates a situation of mutual intrigue and internal disorder.
Whenever the four lessons are not fully present, it is called an "incomplete lesson" or "wu yin ke." Zhuge Kongming said: when the yang side does not harmonize with the yin side, and the yin side also does not harmonize with the yang side, and the three transmissions involve deities of the same category, following this pattern is called "wu yin," and wickedness arises within it. He also said: the four lessons should normally include four pairs of upper and lower deities; if one pair is missing, it is considered "incomplete." Additionally, if the deity above the day stem conflicts with the deity above the day branch, this is also considered an incomplete lesson. There is another view: if the deity above the day branch conflicts with the day branch itself, and then the day branch conflicts back with the day stem, this chain of mutual conflict is also classified under this type of lesson.
Shao's explanation says: When encountering the "strong days" such as Jia, Bing, Wu, Geng, and Ren, the four lessons start counting from the day stem. When encountering the "weak days" such as Yi, Ding, Ji, Xin, and Gui, the four lessons start counting from the day branch. If among the four lessons there are only two yang and one yin, it is considered that the yin side is missing, called "yin not complete," which is like two men competing for one woman. If among the four lessons there are only two yin and one yang, it is considered that the yang side is missing, called "yang not complete," which is like two women competing for one man. When the upper god of the day stem and the upper god of the day branch mutuallyrestrain each other and neither can generate the other, it also belongs to this type of lesson. As for the saying that yang does not combine with yin and yin does not get close to yang, it considers the day stem as yang and the day branch as yin: if the upper god of the day branch克 the upper god of the day stem, it means that yin does not get close to yang; if the upper god of the day stem克 the upper god of the day branch, it means that yang does not combine with yin.
The *Golden Chest Classic* says: If the four lessons are not complete, there is no *yin* (a term indicating a certain type of influence or relationship). If you start the first lesson according to the day stem and produce the situation of "incomplete yin," predictions often result in errors and missed opportunities. Remember that on a yang day, the day stem comes first, and the first lesson starts from the heavenly stem above the day stem. On a yin day, the day branch comes first, and the first lesson starts from the heavenly stem above the day branch. The phrase "three words are like past comparisons of respect" means that the three transmissions are of the same type and support each other, such as all three being metal, all three being wood, or all three being fire. In the example given below, "initiating transmission" takes Hekui (Xu), the middle transmission produces Shengguang (Wu), and the final transmission returns to Gongcao (Yin). The three branches Yin, Wu, and Xu form a fire trinity, which means they are all of the same type, fire.
This divination indicates that the lower officials harbor deceitful intentions. The yang is incomplete and should be found in the higher-ranking officials, while the yin is incomplete and should be found in the subordinate staff. If the night general used in the night divination is added upon this, the matter certainly lacks openness and integrity. If there is another divine general in the chart that can restrain it, then there is some relief, and the sinister plots can be intercepted. Regarding family matters, it suggests that both spouses have affairs outside the marriage, their thoughts are divergent, their desires are excessive and unrestrained, the family is not upright, and everything is connected to immorality. This chart overall corresponds to the hexagram of "Small Accumulation," indicating a situation where the couple is at odds and their harmony is disrupted.
The Three Transmissions only show yang spirits from beginning to end and do not show yin spirits. If there are many yang spirits and the yin side is incomplete, the matter is initiated by a man. If there are many yin spirits and the yang side is incomplete, the matter is initiated by a woman. If the lower spirits reverse and overcome the upper spirits, the fault lies with the woman. Two yang spirits surrounding one yin spirit indicate a woman being contested by two men. Two yin spirits surrounding one yang spirit indicate a man being contested by two women. When used to divinate other matters, things are mostly not accomplished, and even if they are forced to be accomplished, they will break down in the middle. This is because the class of "incomplete" divination indicates that all matters are incomplete. The general category of "no illicit relations" usually indicates that trouble arises from secret private affairs.
The image text says: Yin and Yang are not fully matched, and the most dangerous situation is when upper and lower parts mutually control each other. This hexagram indicates that one will be busy pursuing fame and fortune but achieve nothing, and there will be prolonged imprisonment or illness. When predicting weather, if the Yin side is incomplete, there will be prolonged clear weather; if the Yang side is incomplete, there will be more rain. When predicting the arrival of a person, the person will not arrive soon. When predicting warfare, it is a worrying hexagram. If Yang is not complete, it is advisable to defend rather than attack, as enemies will not attack. If Yin is not complete, it is advisable to attack, but even if enemies come, they will not engage in real battle. If only three of the four lessons are formed, and the heavenly stem of the day and the heavenly stem of the day branch mutually control each other, it is extremely dangerous. If the riding heavenly general is also凶, it becomes even worse, corresponding to the image of the third line of the hexagram "Xiao Xu" "spouse turns against each other." If only the four lessons are incomplete but there is no mutual control or conflict, it is not considered dangerous. However, things will be delayed, and spouses may temporarily separate, but eventually they will reunite, corresponding to the image of the second line of the hexagram "Xiao Xu" "pulling back and returning to harmony" with united hearts.
The heavenly god overpowers the earthly god, indicating misfortune arising from the male; the earthly god overpowers the heavenly god, indicating misfortune arising from the female. If the Three Transmissions are mostly paired with yang spirits, the matter is initiated by the male; if they are mostly paired with yin spirits, the matter is initiated by the female. If yang is not complete, it signifies that the number of males is insufficient, with two females competing for one male; if yin is not complete, it signifies that the number of females is insufficient, with two males competing for one female. These are all signs of excessive indulgence. The classic text says: If yin and yang are not complete, there must be disgraceful events within the family. It also says: Excessive indulgence leads to marital discord, and endeavors will not succeed, illness will not heal, and both personal well-being and property will be lacking.
For example, divining an event on the day of Jiazi in the tenth month at noon. The month general is Gongcao in the寅 branch, which is placed on the hour of Wu to set up the chart. The day stem Jia is lodged in the寅 branch, and the earth branch寅 receives the heaven branch戌, so it is said 'Heavenly魁 is over Jia'—Heavenly魁 is Hekui戌. The day branch Zi receives the heaven branch申, and 申 is Chuansong, so it is said 'Chuansong is over Zi'. Jia is a yang stem, representing a husband; Zi is a yin branch, representing a wife. Jia wood originally wanted to be close to Zi water, but feared that Chuansong申 gold on Zi would come to overcome it; Zi water originally wanted to follow Jia wood, but feared that Hekui戌 earth on Jia would come to overcome it: this is the case where yang does not wish to be close to yin, and yin does not wish to be close to yang. Zi water secretly delights, and is determined to connect with 申 gold, and 申 Zi Bing can form a half water trinity, which is the image of the wife having private affection and deceiving the husband. The three transmissions start with Hekui戌 as the first transmission, the middle transmission is Shengguang Wu, and the final transmission returns to Gongcao寅. The three branches寅 Wu戌 form a fire trinity, like three people of different surnames forming factions. The three transmissions are of the same type and all come to compare with Jia wood, indicating that the husband also has other thoughts and acts against the wife. The upper god should generate the lower god in a smooth way, but here it is not smooth, so there is an affair both inside and outside. Divining such a chart indicates that the person is not upright inside and outside, and the result is that the wife has an affair with someone from the southwest. Other situations can be inferred in the same way.
This is the complete divination chart for the lesson on the tenth month, the Jiazi day, the noon hour. It is divided into three layers from top to bottom. The top three lines, "Cai Xu Liu, Zi Wu Bai, Xiong Yin Hou," are the "Three Transmissions," in order of initial, middle, and final transmission: the initial transmission, also called "Initiating Transmission," takes Hekui Xu, which on the Jia wood day is the wealth hexagram, riding on the Heavenly General Liu He; the middle transmission, Shengguang Wu, on the Jia wood day is the son hexagram, riding on the White Tiger; the final transmission, Gongcao Yin, on the Jia wood day is the brother hexagram, riding on the Heavenly Empress. The middle three lines are the "Four Lessons," according to ancient methods read from right to left: the bottom line, "Shen Zi Xu Jia," is the lower god, starting from the right as Jia, Xu, Zi, Shen; the middle line, "Chen Shen Wu Xu," is the upper god, starting from the right as Xu, Wu, Shen, Chen; the top line, "Yuan Qing Bai Liu," is the riding Heavenly Generals, starting from the right as Liu He, White Tiger, Azure Dragon, Black Tortoise. Thus, the first lesson has Jia on Xu riding Liu He, the second lesson has Xu on Wu riding White Tiger, the third lesson has the day branch Zi on Shen riding Azure Dragon, and the fourth lesson has Shen on Chen riding Black Tortoise. The bottom four lines are the Heaven and Earth plates: the outer frame with twelve sections is the fixed Earth plate, starting from the top-left corner as the Si palace, proceeding clockwise as Wu, Wei, Shen, You, Xu, Hai, Zi, Chou, Yin, Mao, Chen; the text within each section is the Heaven plate, read from the top-left corner clockwise as Chou, Yin, Mao, Chen, Si, Wu, Wei, Shen, You, Xu, Hai, Zi. The Heaven plate at each position is four places behind the Earth plate it covers. This is exactly the arrangement formed by the Month General Gongcao Yin added to the time of noon, Wu: Yin on Wu, Xu on Yin (Jia is located on Yin, so Jia sees Xu), Shen on Zi, matching completely with the Four Lessons.
The example given of the lesson on the tenth month, Jiazi day, Wu hour, is exactly an instance of the statement "Yang does not combine with Yin, and Yin does not closely associate with Yang." As for "three statements are mutually harmonious, each going to their respective higher positions," this refers to the three transmitters being of the same category and mutually supporting each other. In this lesson, Yin, Wu, and Xu all belong to the fire category, which is what this means. Anyone who encounters this lesson is indicative of a mind filled with lustful thoughts, and their undertakings will ultimately fail.
For example, on a Gengchen day at the hour of Shen, the original text writes 'Gengsi day', but the four lessons below show the lower gods in order as Geng, Chen, Chen, and Zi. The day branch is clearly Chen, indicating that 'Si' is a mistaken character for 'Chen', and we should take the lesson disk as accurate. Geng metal resides in Shen, and the heaven plate Chen is placed on the earth plate Shen, so it is said 'Tiangang joins Geng'—Tiangang refers to Chen. The day branch Chen has the heaven plate Zi on it, and Zi is Shenhou, so it is said 'Shenhou joins Chen'. Tiangang Chen belongs to earth and overcomes Shenhou Zi water, which is why yang does not harmonize with yin; Shenhou water fears Tiangang earth, which is why yin does not closely connect with yang. The three transmissions start with Shenhou Zi as the initiating transmission, the middle transmission is Chuansong Shen, and the final transmission is Tiangang Chen. Zi, Shen, and Chen all belong to the water group, which perfectly matches the 'three words' theory of similar types, and they support each other. This lesson describes a situation where yin and yang are already at odds, yet the three transmissions form a group and support each other internally, indicating that there must be private affection and secret conspiracies. Shenhou Zi is the 'yin god' of Tiangang Chen (i.e., the god above Chen), and also serves as the initiating transmission, equivalent to a yang god with two followers. Therefore, it is concluded that the person has a divided heart and is inclined to immorality. The phrase 'without immorality' means that if one cannot control an immoral woman at this time, trouble is sure to arise.

This is the divination board for the day Geng Chen and the hour Shen. The top three lines, "Zi Zi Teng, Brother Shen Qing, Father Chen Yuan," are the three transmissions: the first transmission is Shenhou Zi, which is the son of Geng metal, riding on Teng Snake; the second transmission is Chuansong Shen, which is the brother of Geng metal, riding on Qinglong; the third transmission is Tiangang Chen, which is the father of Geng metal, riding on Xuanwu. The middle three lines are the four lessons, read from right to left: the lower god line "Zi Chen Chen Geng" starting from the right is Geng, Chen, Chen, Zi; the upper god line "Shen Zi Zi Chen" starting from the right is Chen, Zi, Zi, Shen; the heavenly general line "Qing Teng Teng Yuan" starting from the right is Xuanwu, Teng Snake, Teng Snake, Qinglong. Therefore, the first lesson has Geng with Chen riding on Xuanwu, the second lesson has Chen with Zi riding on Teng Snake, the third lesson has the day branch Chen with Zi riding on Teng Snake, and the fourth lesson has Zi with Shen riding on Qinglong. The second and third lessons have exactly the same upper and lower gods, so the four lessons become three, which is exactly the "incomplete" situation mentioned in this passage. The bottom four lines are the heaven and earth plates: the upper left corner of the earth plate is the Si palace, and clockwise it is Si, Wu, Wei, Shen, You, Xu, Hai, Zi, Chou, Yin, Mao, Chen; within the grid, the heaven plate is read clockwise from the upper left corner as Chou, Yin, Mao, Chen, Si, Wu, Wei, Shen, You, Xu, Hai, Zi; the heaven plate is four positions behind the earth plate. Geng is located in Shen, and the heaven plate at Shen is Chen, which matches "Tiangang added to Geng"; in other words, this is the board formed by the month general Tiangang Chen added to the hour Shen.
