73. The Twelve Palaces

Ming (明) · Yuan Gong (袁珙) · Volume 4 / 10

1. The Palace of Destiny.

The "Ming Gong" is located between the two eyebrows and above the mountain root, which is also known as the "Yin Tang." If this area is bright and clear like a mirror, one will have knowledge in all fields; if the mountain root is flat and full, it indicates a long and prosperous life; if the nose (representing the Earth Star) is high and prominent, there will be wealth; if the eyes are clear and distinct, one will certainly achieve both wealth and status; if there is a "Chuan" character mark on the forehead, it indicates encountering the "Yi Ma" (Post Horse), leading to traveling widely and achieving success. If the Yin Tang is low and sunken, one will certainly be lonely and poor; if the two eyebrows connect and invade the Yin Tang, one will become of low status; if the Yin Tang has chaotic patterns, one will leave home and be harmful to one's wife. Therefore, a narrow forehead and dry eyebrows indicate a life of poverty. A poem says: The area between the two eyebrows and eyes is the Ming Gong; if it is bright, smooth, and clean, one's knowledge will be thorough; but if the patterns are chaotic and there is a cold and stagnant atmosphere, one will lose all family wealth and disgrace one's ancestors.

2. Wealth and Treasure Palace.

The nose is called the "wealth star" and is located in the earth position, hence called the wealth palace. If the nose is shaped like a cut bamboo tube or like a hanging gallbladder, it indicates great wealth. A high, straight, and full nose beam suggests a life of wealth and honor. If the nose is in the middle of the face, upright and not crooked, it signifies abundant blessings and honors. A thin nose with a sharp tip resembles a peak, indicating poverty and low status in old age. One must avoid a nose with upturned and exposed nostrils, which signifies no food for two nights. The "kitchen stove" on both sides of the nostrils, if hollow and lacking flesh, indicates that the family cannot accumulate wealth. Old annotations say that having one or two hairs inside the nostrils is called "gold climbing," which is not good; having more hairs is better. A poem says: the nose is the wealth palace, it should be high and full; the kitchen stoves on both sides must not be hollow. Upturned and exposed nostrils mean perpetual lack of food and grain. The lower jaw and the nose should face each other and support each other, indicating abundant wealth and official rank.

3. The Brother's House.

The "Brotherhood Palace" is located between the eyebrows, associated with the stars Luo Hou and Ji Du. If the eyebrows are longer than the eyes, there will be three or four brothers, and they will not conflict with each other. If the eyebrows are clear and elegant, and the face is bright and clear, although some brothers may achieve success later, they will eventually attain high status. If the eyebrows are shaped like a new moon, the brothers will be harmonious and outstanding. If the eyebrows are short and thick, there will be difficulty in unity among siblings. If the left and right eyebrows are of different lengths, the brothers are likely to be from different mothers. If the eyebrows are connected and have a yellowish, turbid color, the person may die in a foreign land. If the eyebrows are high at the beginning and low at the end, the brothers will not get along. A poem says: The eyebrows represent the Brotherhood Palace; the eyebrows should be soft and graceful, allowing for four or five brothers. If the corners of the eyebrows are uneven in height, the brothers are likely to be from different mothers. If the eyebrows are connected and have a yellowish, turbid color, the person will die in a foreign land.

4. The Field and Residence Palace.

The eyes belong to the "Field and House" palace. The most dreaded is for red threads to enter the eyeballs, which indicates the loss of all family wealth at an early age. The left eye represents yang, and the right eye represents yin. If either eye is sunken or misplaced, one will have no food stored for old age. If the eyeballs are black and bright like ink, there will be continuous prosperity in property and land. If one has a pair of phoenix eyes along with high and lifted eyebrows, their farmland will extend across three states and five counties. If the eyes are dim and the spirit light is exposed, wealth will be scattered and the family will decline. A poem says: the eyes govern the Field and House palace; both eyes should be clear and distinct, and aligned on both sides. If both yang and yin eyes are dry and the spirit light is exposed, the family wealth left by the parents will eventually be lost.

5. The palace of male and female.

The "Heavenly and Earthly Palace" (男女宫) is used to assess children. For sons, look at the left eye socket; for daughters, look at the right eye socket. Both are located below the eyes, called "Tear Hall" (泪堂) or "Lid Tendon" (卧蚕). If the "Three Yang" area below the eyes is flat and full, the children will have good fortune and prosperity. If the "Lid Tendon" is subtly raised, the children will ultimately be of high status. If the "Tear Hall" is sunken, there will be no children. If there is a black mole or a slanted line in this area, it indicates the loss of children (early death of children). If the lips are curled up like blowing fire, a woman will be left alone in an empty house. If the philtrum is flat and without a groove, it is difficult to have children. A poem says: The "Heavenly and Earthly Palace" is located in the "Three Yang" area and the "Lid Tendon" below the eyes. If this area is bright and lustrous, one can have good sons. If there are lines entering this area, even a learned person cannot bear this deficiency in life.

6. The Palace of Servants.

The "Servant Palace" is located in the area below the chin, specifically between "Golden Thread" and "Earth Store," and connects upward to the mouth (Water Star). A full and round chin indicates many attendants; if further supported by the auxiliary bones on both sides, one can command obedience from many. If the mouth is square, resembling the character "four," it signifies the power to summon people when needed and dismiss them when desired. If the Heavenly Granary and Earth Store are crooked, granting favors may instead lead to resentment. A deep and sunken Servant Palace indicates that people cannot be effectively utilized. A poem says: The Servant Palace also requires a rich Earth Store. If the two corners of the mouth are uneven in height, and the Earth Store, Golden Thread, and three other areas are not harmonious, then a sunken and marked Earth Store is destined to have no servants or followers.

7. The Palace of Wife and Concubine.

The "Wife and Concubine Palace" is located at the outer corner of the eye, also known as the "Cunning Gate." If this area is smooth and free of markings, the wife will certainly be virtuous, possessing the four virtues of a good wife: propriety, speech, appearance, and skills. If this area is full and level, marriage will bring great wealth. If the cheekbones are high and extend over this area, one will gain official rank through his wife. If the Cunning Gate is deep and sunken, there will be repeated marriages. If there are many markings at the outer corner of the eye, there is a risk of the wife dying prematurely. If the Cunning Gate is dark and has slanting markings, the sons are likely to be from concubines. A poem says: if the Cunning Gate is bright and smooth, the wife will be well maintained, and wealth will be abundant, ensuring stability. But if the Cunning Gate is dark and dull, with slanting markings, the sons will mostly be from secondary wives.

8. The Palace of Illness and Disease.

The "Ji E Gong" refers to the area on the nose between the "Nian Shang" (year position), "Shou Shang" (longevity position), and the "Shan Gen" (mountain root). If the "Shan Gen" is bright and smooth, the person will have no illness throughout their life. If it is dull and dark, it indicates continuous illness and misfortune. A poem says: If the "Ji E Gong" is flat and full, the person will have no disasters or misfortunes throughout their life. However, if there are markings or lines on this area and the bone structure is thin and weak, the person will have a hard life and find it difficult to achieve success.

9. Migration House.

The "Migration Palace" is located above the tail of the eyebrow, called "Heavenly Granary." If this area is full and prosperous, the person will shine brightly and have no worries throughout their life; if it is moist and level, they will be respected by others even in old age. If the "Post Horse" area on the forehead has a strong and vigorous appearance, the person can travel far and wide. If the forehead corner and the fish tail are sunken, they will not find a place to settle down even in old age; if the eyebrows are missing, they will lose their ancestral property and leave their family. If both the forehead (Heaven) and the lower jaw (Earth) are sunken, they will have to move nine times in their lifetime. If one has such a face, they must change their family and move their residence. A poem says: The "Migration Palace" is located in the "Heavenly Granary," and if this area is deeply sunken, the person will rarely have a place to settle down throughout their life; if the fish tail corresponds with it in old age, then they will certainly be a person who travels for official duties and has an extraordinary life journey.

10. Official Rank Palace.

The "Official Rank Palace" is located at the "Zhongzheng" position on the forehead, extending upward to the "Li Palace" on the top of the head. If there is a straight "Fu Xi Bone" running from the forehead to the top of the head, the person will never need to go to court. If the "Yi Ma" position on the side of the forehead is full and turns toward the head with a harmonious appearance, the person will never get into legal trouble. If this area is bright, smooth, and clean, the person will achieve high status and stand out. If the forehead angle is prominent and strong, even if legal issues arise, the person can resolve them with the help of a nobleman. However, if there are markings, depressions, or damage in this area, the person is prone to sudden misfortunes. If the eyes are red like a red carp, the person is certain to commit a crime. A poem says: The "Official Rank Palace" should be carefully examined, and it must be in harmony with the "Shan Gen," "Tian Cang," and "Di Ku." If this area suddenly becomes bright and smooth without any markings or points, it indicates that the person will hold an official position and enjoy long-term prestige.

11. The Palace of Fortune and Virtue.

The "Fortune Virtue Palace" is located on the side of the forehead at "Heavenly Granary," connecting downward to the chin at "Earthly Pavilion." When "Heaven" (Heavenly Granary) and "Earth" (Earthly Pavilion) are well matched, one's life is filled with continuous blessings and good fortune. If the head is round but the forehead is narrow, one will suffer hardship in early years; if the forehead is wide but the head is pointed, one will face difficulties in old age. Those with high eyebrows and prominent ears may achieve honor and success; however, those with low eyebrows and withered ears will have little to do with fortune and virtue. A poem says: The "Fortune Virtue Palace" requires both "Heavenly Granary" and "Earthly Pavilion" to be full and complete. If the five stars (the two ears, forehead, mouth, and nose) are bright and smooth, then blessings will flow continuously. But if there are defects, sharpness, or damage, one's whole life will lack even basic necessities like food and clothing.

12. The Appearance Palace.

The "Appearance Palace" is a general overview: first examine the "Five Mountains," then observe the "Three Stops." If the Five Mountains face upward and the Three Stops are of equal length, the person will have dignity in walking, sitting, and standing, and will be respected by others, thus achieving wealth and honor. If the Five Mountains are crooked and the Three Stops are uneven, the person will suffer poverty throughout their life. The forehead represents early years (the initial period), the nose represents middle age (the middle period), and the mouth (Water Star) and the lower part of the face (earth terrace) represent old age (the final period). If any of the Three Stops is sunken, it indicates misfortune. A poem says: to examine the Appearance Palace, one should look at the upper, middle, and lower Three Stops. They should be of equal length and mutually supportive; if any part is uneven, then it is not the case of a person with abundant blessings and great fortune.

A woman possesses seven virtues that bring prosperity to her husband and excellence to her sons. The first is proper and upright gait. The second is a round face and sturdy body. Second, she remains without complaint even in hardship. Third, she controls her diet with moderation. Fourth, she remains calm when hearing news, and remains composed and does not lose control even in times of joy.

Eighty-two, women have varying lifespans, some long and some short, naturally different.

Men are governed by spirit, while women are governed by blood. When a man's vital energy and blood are weak, he tends to fall ill more often; when they are strong, he tends to be healthier. If a woman has thin skin, tight skin, a sharp and narrow appearance, weak blood and vital energy, short and labored breathing, and a coarse and turbid spirit, how can she expect to live long? If a woman has abundant spirit, thick and solid skin, plump and firm flesh, and straight bones, she naturally becomes a woman of fortune and longevity. The poem says: those with weak blood and tight skin will not live long; those with thin and dry skin will not have a firm lifespan; if the skin is broad and supple and the blood and vital energy are strong—here the original text is missing some words, and the last sentence is lost, leaving only three lines of the poem.

Eighty-four, the pattern of ten obligations for a man.

Eighty-six, Cold and Heat Interconnect, and the fortune flows through the cycles.

the so-called "cold" : the "six organs" are not balanced, the "three parts" are not harmonized, and the Five Phases are not in their proper positions. This is like a star chart where the original constellations are lost and the stars are each in their own fallen positions. Although one may have aspirations, they cannot be realized, and success is not attained, indicating a lifelong state of obscurity and stagnation.the so-called "communication" : there is originally something that can be understood and taken advantage of, but due to unevenness in the facial features and mismatched color tones, one suffers from hardship for several consecutive years. Suddenly, a crucial part gains color and vitality, and once the color is established, those who are rulers will have the ambition to rise straight up to the clouds, while common people will also have enduring virtue and benevolence.

the so-called "得": if the previous area is not good, but the next area is good, when the flow year arrives at the good area, one naturally gains something.the so-called "失": even if the complexion is good but the area is not good, one will eventually lose. The book of physiognomy says: the complexion determines the fortune and misfortune of the current year's flow year — the area is the root, and the complexion is the application; both should be considered together.

Eighty-seven, illness and hardship cause distress, and one's body is often in a state of suffering.

the so-called "disease," is nothing more than illness, which manifests in the "Ji E Gong" (the area of illness and misfortune, covering the mountain root, year position, and longevity position). One should look at the color of this area: if it is dark green, it indicates only a minor illness; if it shows black or red, it indicates some misfortune, but not death. However, if the four areas of the mouth (Water Star), the tip of the nose (Earth Star), the命宫 (Imperial Palace, also known as Yintang), and the two ears (the two stars of Metal and Wood) show colors indicating mutual control among the Five Elements, then death is certain.the so-called "control" refers to the principle of mutual control among the Five Elements, which must be examined carefully. If the entire face appears as if covered with a layer of mist, great calamity is certain; if the "Tian Ting" (the forehead area) shows dull and dark color, great calamity is certain; if the "bian di" (the side of the forehead) shows dark and dull color, great calamity is certain.
