Charting guides: Liu Yao Divination Chart, Da Yan Yarrow Stalk Divination

Now I will point out each of the ominous influences one by one. When丁 and 丙 are paired with 寅 and 卯, it is like the image of burning mountains, with all grass and trees burned to wither, birds lacking food and their nests destroyed by fire; any flying creatures falling under this are particularly inauspicious. For beasts, the忌 is Renchen, which is the 'flood of violence'; the 'Room mansion' (房日兔), 'Heart mansion' (心月狐), 'Tail fire tiger' (尾火虎), 'Spoon water leopard' (箕水豹), 'Spear wood獬' (斗木獬), as well as 'Kui wood wolf' (奎木狼), 'Lou metal dog' (娄金狗), 'Mouth fire monkey' (嘴火猴), 'Ghost metal sheep' (鬼金羊), and 'Willow soil獐' (柳土獐) — these ten mansions, if they are affected, will result in the loss of ancestral property (the original text has a missing '破' character after '犯之', but it is retained as is).

The following are the stems and branches associated with various ominous forces: Jisi is "Loushi Sha"; Bingxu and Gengshen are "Qiongjin Sha"; Wuwu is "Pileli"; Yiwei is "Kuhuo Sha"; Wuchen and Wushen are "Bixi Sha"; Dingwei is "Xuanzhen Sha"; Dingsi and Dingyou are called "Niuxu Polan"; Jiaxu and Gengwu are "Duyao Sha"; Xinchou is "Wugong Sha"; Jiayin is "Bangzhang Sha"; Bingxu is also called "Polanquan"; Gengshen, Xinwei, Gengyin, and Gengwu are named "Touti", which are most to be avoided by Niuxu; Bingxu is also associated with "Shaoya" and "Shaoye", which are avoided by tigers and leopards; Renchen, Guihai, and Renzi are "Memen Sha", which are avoided by wild animals; Dingwei and Bingwu are "Goujiao Sha"; Gengshen, Gengwu, and Gengzi are "Luoqiao Sha".

Jia Chen and Yi Si are "di wang" (earth net), Jia Xu and Yi Hai are "tian luo" (heavenly net), Geng Yin and Xin Mao are "li chu" (plow and hoe); Bing Yin is "hu su niu" (a trembling ox at the point of execution), Geng Yin is "xin zhong niu" (an ox sacrificed to smear the bell), "yi hu she" (winged fire snake) and "zhen shui yin" (water worm in the zhen position) are also like this. These categories are also called "hu ke" (bad nest), indicating that the person is adopted from another branch or is a庶出 (illegitimate child).

If a dragon encounters the ant evil, the imprisonment evil, or the tortoise evil, it will result in a lifetime of hardship and humiliation, unable to achieve success. Wuzi is the "dragon driver," which is suppressed by others, unable to accumulate wealth; all other animals should also avoid this position. "The bull and golden bull" encountering Dingsi brings disaster of skin peeling and sores. Gengshen transforms into a chopping block, Jiayin transforms into a stick, officials often face the risk of being beaten with sticks, while ordinary people will certainly suffer from alternating chills and fever, bloody discharge, and all affairs being obstructed.

Bingyin, Guimao, and Renchen are "Xing Hu Sha", indicating a life of hardship and constant toil. Bingxu signifies burning in the wild, Renchen signifies drifting, and Guihai signifies drowning. The "Wei Huo Hu" and "Ji Shui Bao" are most adverse to these three patterns. A snake encountering Dingsi is shed of its skin, encountering Dingwei is burning in the wild, and encountering Dinghai is devoured by a pig. If rabbits, chickens, or pheasants encounter these patterns, they will either suffer from missing lips and broken teeth or lose their sight, or suffer from diseases of the nose and mouth, or otherwise face sores and boils. These must be distinguished between day and night, and between spring and winter, in order to be accurately judged.

A sheep encountering the Xinyou (辛酉) is the fate of Han dynasty's execution of Peng Yue by cutting with a knife; a wild boar in the Jiashen (甲申) seven arrows place is the fate of Pang Juan being shot to death by arrows on the Ma Ling Road. A horse transformed into a dragon (Renchen 壬辰) is the fate of Fan Kuai saving the emperor at the Hongmen Banquet; a wild boar transformed into a suanni (Jingchen 丙辰) is the fate of Wu Zixu presenting treasures that startled the King of Wu. A snake transformed into a bashe (巴蛇) is the fate of Zhu Wen murdering the king in the Jiaolan Hall; an earthworm transformed into a heavenly dragon (Gengchen 庚辰) is the fate of Wang Mang poisoning the king during the Tianqing period. These generations of ancients each had their own paths to success and official rank, showing that prosperity and decline, high and low status, cannot be avoided. Therefore, the virtue or lack thereof, advancement or retreat, success or failure of later generations should not be surprising.

The Spin Wheel Discourse

At first, chaos was divided, and yin and yang harmonized and balanced. The sun, moon, and five planets, along with the seven celestial authorities, rotated within the heavens and earth. The Five Phases extended and interwove within the realms of Heaven and Earth. In a year of three hundred and sixty days, the waxing and waning followed a fixed measure. The heavens arranged the twenty-eight constellations, and thus fortune and misfortune were differentiated. When stars were harmonious or merged, they produced auspicious or inauspicious outcomes: those that were like and harmonious or mutually generating indicated abundant food and clothing, while those involving punishment and clash, conflict, and struggle indicated difficulties in fame and wealth. When the time was appropriate and the season was right, the mole could transform into a quail, as mentioned in the "Book of Rites · Monthly Orders" which states that in the third month of spring, "the mole becomes a quail." When the season arrived at the right time, wild pheasants could transform into clams, as stated in the "Monthly Orders" which says that in the first month of winter, "the pheasant enters the great water and becomes a clam."

This is indeed because the stars travel along the Yellow Path and the Red Path, circulating through the eight directions. Those whose territories belong to Wu, Zheng, Zhou, and Song allow the gentleman to act timely, like the black leopard of Nan Mountain hiding in the mist to form patterns. Those whose territories belong to Yan, Qi, Jin, and Wei allow the great man to stand beneath the dragon steps. The "Bi Shui Yu" (Wall Water Beast) can only be at ease in the lakes, sands, and marshes of the wild; the "Lou Jin Gou" (Enclosure Metal Dog) becomes sorrowful if it falls on the chopping block or the sea. Therefore, the "Chen Shui Yun" (Zhen Water Worm) is restrained by the rooster, the "Kui Mu Lang" (Kui Wood Wolf) chases the rabbit, the "Zui Huo Hou" (Mouth Fire Monkey) fears the open bow and arrow, and the "Bi Yue Wu" (Bi Moon Bird) likes to dwell in ancient forests. The "Kang Jin Long" (Exalted Metal Dragon) is named Kang, capable of ascending to the position of Nine in the Fifth; the Xie can soar above the Xuan Ming (Darkness); the Yan (swallow) comes and goes in spring and autumn during the second and eighth months.

The Horn mansion is located in the direction of Zhen and Xun, known as pure fire, and pairs with the Dipper mansion. "Dipper wood獬" guards the state of Wu and gains honor, while the metal energy in the hour of Wu exchanges power with the states of Qin and Jin. Horses can move in the areas of Chen and Wu, as there is millet and beans available there. Sika deer prefer to live in the regions of Song and Zhou, while Jin prefers mountain cliffs. The chirping of swallows is called "High Hall" in the region of Song; the jumping of chickens is called "Feces and Dirt" in the region of Wei. When "Ji water豹" meets "Well wood犴", it is swallowed; "Shen water猿" waits for food and finds fruit trees in the Qian palace. "Nu earth蝠" gains fortune when the time is right and becomes a flower cave when it meets the You position. Therefore, pheasants should live in snake holes, earthworms should enter dragon palaces, foxes benefit from the positions of Shen and Si, rabbits find happiness in mountain forests, sheep borrow tiger skins to appear strong, and dragons like wind and thunder and can transform. "Zhang moon鹿" and "Star day马" are associated with longevity, but they fear "Well wood犴" and "Kui wood狼" as well as tigers and leopards. "Yi fire蛇" is cruel and fears doves and centipedes. "Shi fire猪" fears the position of Yin and "Ji water豹", while "Well wood犴" can capture dragons and tigers. Before the summer solstice, deer shed their horns; after the great cold, chickens begin to hatch eggs and doves start to call. Observing the principles of creation and transformation, it is simply about mutual relations and oppositions.

The Great Name Discourse

The first is Jiao Kang.

"The Horn mansion" and "The Neck mansion" belong to the category of dragons and serpents, and they particularly favor wind, thunder, clouds, and rain. Those with the image of thunder and lightning in their fate can attain the rank of marquis or duke (Yimao represents the true thunder, Renzi represents clouds and rain, and Gengxu and Xinmao are positions of marquis and duke). Those with the image of rain and wind coming from the sky can rise to prominent positions (Renchen and Guisi represent rain and wind coming from the sky, which are the fates of the Three Dukes). A noble fate requires the presence of Ren and Gui water (having many Ren and Gui waters and located in the heavenly gate is considered noble). A humble fate is caused by the mutual oppression of metal and fire. If metal and fire are oppressed by water, it indicates a tendency to be careless with wealth and to make a living through skills (when metal and fire meet water, this is that pattern). If water and soil contain flowing Ren water, it results in small achievements. A fluctuating fate is due to stagnant water and soil (when water and soil are stopped in the positions of Chen, Xu, Chou, and Wei, the person's life is unstable). Illness is caused by the conflict between water and metal (an excess of metal and fire leads to illness). Those born in spring with the heavenly stem Jia or Yi will have a peaceful and comfortable life; those born in autumn with the heavenly stem Geng or Xin will face difficulties throughout their lives (seeing Geng and Xin in autumn often means their talents are buried and not recognized).

The appearance of the day's host in the position of the door indicates a secondary wife or concubine (a house with many doors suggests many concubines, or the person is of a lower status). If the mother is weak, it is often because her birth year falls under Yiwei. If the fire of Bing clashes and controls the day's host, men are likely to remarry (if the day's host is Bing fire, men will remarry, women will suffer from marital problems). If the earth of Wu and Ji fills the entire chart, women will have difficulties with three husbands (if the entire chart is filled with earth, it will cause marital problems and harm to children). If the fire is very strong and there is a conflict, birds may suffer from blindness (such as when Bingzi meets Bingyin, or Jiayin meets the fire trine of寅午戌). If the metal of Geng is sharp and strong, animals may worry about a broken waist (when Geng or Xin meets Yiwei, it indicates a waist injury).

The qi of Heaven's strength appears at the heavenly gate, so there is no need to distinguish the amount of autumn water (if the heavenly gate is present along with the position of Ren and Gui water, it indicates great fortune). The heavy earth of the Earth's strength is most afraid of encountering damp and muddy land (if the position of Wei is present, which represents the Earth, and is harmed by the position of Si, it indicates poverty and low status). When the dragon soars above the sea gate, it does not fear the knife and砧 (if there are positions of Renzi and Guihai present, weak metal cannot overcome strong water). When joy jumps at the heavenly pool, it can rise and fight against clouds and rain (if there is a position of Dingwei with Ren and Gui water, it forms the heavenly pool; without Ren and Gui water, it becomes dry land). If Yimao is present in summer, thunder rumbles faintly (if both the heavenly gate and the gate of thunder are present, it indicates high status); if Renchen is present in spring, wind and rain arrive in a bleak manner (if Renchen appears in spring or summer, it indicates great fortune).

Bingzi is a combination of wood and fire, which often indicates eye problems for men; Wushen is a mix of earth and water, which often indicates irregular menstruation for women. The most worrying is encountering frost and snow, and the most feared is encountering a chopping block. Frost and snow correspond to Gui Chou in winter, while Geng Shen and Xin You correspond to a chopping block. Heavenly water can produce virtuous talents and bring fame and success (Ren Xu); but if it falls on dry land, even with talent, one will find it hard to rise. When亥 and Zi meet with Ding, it is thunder; when fire appears in the middle of Gui and Ren, it is lightning. If there is fire when Wushen appears, it is called extreme drought and water is generated. When fire meets巳 and亥, it is like a dry pond encountering disaster.

Second, the constellation of the Heart, the House, and the氐.

"The Root mansion," "The Room mansion," and "The Heart mansion" belong to the category of fox, rabbit, and貉, which hide among grass and wild fields. Foxes, rabbits, and貉 are of the same kind, and they thrive in areas with abundant grass and open plains (those with many Jia and Yi wood elements bring wealth and honor, and the same applies to Gengzi and Xinchou). When encountering tigers and leopards, they can gain strength and attain high office, even reaching the rank of the Three Dukes (Bingyin and Rennyin positions with the presence of Jia and Yi wood bring great fortune). If they are in a strong position, they can move to two important offices (the Room mansion transforms into a rabbit, the Root and Heart mansions each receive their proper path, and heaven will surely respond). However, one must be cautious if they fall into the Heavenly Gang (Renzi and Mao positions with the presence of Bing and Ding wood indicate a short life). One should also beware of being devoured while crossing a river (Jiazi transforms into a boat, and rabbits and foxes cannot cross water). A rabbit encountering Wuyin will speak slowly, and a fox encountering Si or Wei will have a hoarse voice."

If the position falls on the Black Path with insufficient metal energy, men are prone to thoughts of lust and theft; if it falls on the bright direction with a good fortune, women naturally appear charming (for example, Bingzi with many Jia and Yi). If it falls in the four remote directions and meets the earth net, one is trapped by the Heaven (for example, Guihai with many癸 is the earth path). The stars of Sovereign, Foetus, and Flow, when accompanied by arrows, make it difficult to rise, especially when亥 is met with Ding fire (Jiashen with arrows, Dinghai belongs to fire). Excessive water is the root of being away from home (excessive water is called a traveler); excessive metal is the cause of losing ancestral property (losing the ancestors and breaking the family business). A missing lip is due to亥 being afflicted by癸 (those with many癸 have a missing lip); foot ailments and paralysis of limbs are also caused by being overcome. Those born in the year of Xin, when meeting Jia and Yi, need not worry about wolves and eagles (if Jia and Yi are prosperous and strong, they are not afraid). When Bing and Geng meet frequently, they often fall into bad positions; if the transformed paths like grassy fields are overcome, one should not travel far (when Jia and Yi meet Geng and Xin, going out is not favorable).

The third group consists of the constellations Weizhi, Jizi, and Kui.

"The 'Tail Fire Tiger,' 'Ji Water Leopard,' and 'Kui Wood Wolf' belong to the category of fierce beasts, establishing their authority through mountains, forests, ravines, and valleys. Those with the heavenly stem Geng and Xin possess the power of a hundred battles (Geng and Xin carry malevolent influences, indicating control over power). Those with the heavenly stem Jia wood can establish their own authority. If they are located in mountains and forests and also have a fortunate position, they may attain high status comparable to the Three Stars (having mountains and forests, along with paths, leads to high status among the Three Stars). If they are located in ravines and valleys and encounter the food god, they may attain positions among the Eight Officials (Wuyin and Jimao with Jia and Yi). If they are located in the four wildernesses and encounter food, they will live a life of ease (in the four wildernesses, seeing pigs, sheep, and wild oxen indicates food, leading to a peaceful life). If they are located at the entrance or gate and encounter an empty void, it indicates injury (the so-called empty door refers to Bingwu, Bingzi, Dingyou, and Dingmao, which are ominous for injury)."

When there is an excess of Wu Ji earth and the food god is in an empty position, it leads to poverty and low status (due to excessive earth); when there is an abundance of Bing Ding fire and the phenomena are too strong, it brings hardship (due to excessive fire). If the dwelling is not secure, it is because metal has harmed Jia Yi wood (excessive metal overcomes wood, leading to uncertain success or failure throughout life); if wealth is scattered, it is because fire has dispersed Geng Xin metal. When Wu Ji earth is strong and encounters the Ox mansion, it becomes self-harm (excessive earth meets Xinyou, causing damage); when Jia Yi wood is abundant and meets the horse, it can achieve dominance. If one is in a withered forest but has food, it indicates a foundation for leading an army (Gengyin and Xinyao are called withered forest); if one is in a snowy field but has a deer, it signifies a leader of authority (Geng Xin is called snowy field). When metal is born and one takes on responsibilities and gains benefits, the body is difficult to maintain (Jing Shen and Yi You); when wood meets metal above, wealth cannot be sustained for long (Jia Shen). When Bing Ding fire meets water, speech is not upright (due to fire meeting water); when Geng Xin metal meets Ding fire, one tends to drink excessively (due to metal meeting fire).

The Fourth Section of the Dou Jing

"The Dipper Wood Beast" and "Well Wood Demon" are among the fierce beasts, representing authority and punishment. Wealth and honor come from successive generations of water and wood, while poverty and low status result from repeated overlaps of Bingchen. The "Dipper Wood Beast" is most suitable to be stationed at the main gate area (the four cardinal directions of Zi, Wu, Mao, and You are considered gates). The "Well Wood Demon" should be placed in the den of tigers and leopards (when the Demon is in Bingyin, Renyin, Jiayin, or Yimao, it brings great honor). Those who consume壬癸 are subject to the authority of the yellow钺 (a symbol of power). When encountering庚辛, one enjoys the blessings of the white flag (having a food god in a high position brings honor). Tigers and leopards can display the authority of the Dipper mansion (when encountering Bingyin or Renyin, the Dipper mansion has authority). Dragons can receive the禄 (favorable fortune) from the Star Mansion and the Horse (when in Jiachen or Gengchen, the Star and Horse provide food for the Demon, bringing good fortune).

The獬 is high in the heavenly court and may reach the rank of the Three Grand Ministers (Guihai and Xinhai are the heavenly gates, indicating great fortune); the犴 thrives in the sea corners and may enter the two great offices (Renchen, Jiachen, and Guihai are considered noble). When the Dipper mansion is in a prominent position, it brings joy and happiness to both east and west (when the Dipper mansion appears in Dingmao, Jiazi, or Jiawu, it signifies joy and happiness). However, if the atmosphere of severity and punishment is strong, then north and south will produce villains (Renzi and Renwu are considered noble). Those who cannot achieve success are the犴 wandering between eaves and beams (when the Dipper mansion appears in Gengshen, Xinyou, Bingshen, Dingyou, Dingmao, or Xinmao). Those who follow wrong paths are the Dipper mansion falling in the four wilds (when the Dipper mansion appears in Bingchen, Bingxu, Xinwei, Xinchou, Wu Ji, and the earth branches Chen, Xu, Chou, Wei, it indicates following wrong paths). Short lifespan is indicated by pure metal harming the position of the Three Grand Ministers (pure metal with harmful influences indicates a short life). Difficulty in establishing oneself is indicated by excessive fire in the four pillars (too much fire leads to instability, illness, and misfortune). When the Dipper mansion is in the position of Bing and holds power, it shows arrogance (Bingwu, Bingshen, Dingyou, Jiwei are such cases). When the犴 meets hidden metal, it will have extra limbs on the body (when the犴 meets hidden metal, it will have additional limbs).

The Fifth Star of the Ox Constellation

"The Ox and the Golden Ox" and "The Star Mansion and the Horse" are animals used for farming and riding, requiring the most feed and a secure stable. For those in low-ranking official positions, the day of birth is associated with a quiet dwelling, indicating a life of leisure. For those in high-ranking positions, the image of grass and trees is connected with the character癸 (Gui), as the combination of Jia, Yi, Ren, and Gui is favorable. A horse finds peace when there is no tiger in its palace (the presence of Jia Yin or Wu Yin indicates instability). An ox finds happiness when there is no metal in its location (seeing earth and water is most auspicious). Hunger and lack of firewood occur when the stable has no grass (Wu Wu). Wealth and abundance occur when the feeding area has wood (Yi Wei, Yi You, Yi Chou). The patterns of Renshen and Renzi indicate extraordinary talent from heaven (the ox transforms into a rhinoceros). The patterns of Yisi and Jiachen indicate the presence of outstanding individuals (the horse transforms into a dragon foal).

The horse's mouth holding iron bits indicates promotion and appointment (Yiwei, Yiyou); the ox transforming into a qilin signifies great fortune (Jiachen, Gengchen). If it falls in the bright direction, fear the sunlight; encountering the Black Path again in the night forest with a tiger is even more dangerous. A horse born in the position of metal and Jia indicates a white sheep with a leading official position (see Gengzi, Gengxu); an ox encountering the Weaving Woman star, "Ox and Gold Ox" has natural official rank (Renshen, Renxu, plus Gengxu, Xinyou, Wuzi). Injury to the body occurs when encountering fire melting metal (both fire and metal are abundant); scarcity of fortune and honor occurs when encountering Bing and Ding. Continuous flow of sweet spring water comes from Yiwei meeting Long Water (Yiwei meeting Ren and Gui water); encountering癸 soil in muddy water and wild fields (Guiwei, Guichou) indicates a life of constant reversal. Gengwu is a useless ox, Xinyou is a powerless horse.

The Sixth Section: Female Weakness and the Constellation of the Wasteful One

"The female earth bat," "the Xu day rat," and "the Wei month swallow" represent the rat, bat, and swallow, which prefer granaries and houses but fear cats, dogs, eagles, and snakes. Seeing a rat at the gate indicates abundant stores and promotion (associated with Yiyou, Jiyou, Renzi, and the directions of Zi, Wu, Mao, and You). Encountering the female mansion in the four fields suggests that even in wild forests there is a place to dwell (when Jia and Yi are in the four fields, it signifies great fortune). If eagles or snakes are found in the four fields, there may be unexpected dangers (associated with Jiwei and Dingwei, which are very凶). If cats or dogs appear at the gate, it indicates sudden and serious dangers (associated with Wuyin and Gengxu, which are凶). The image of a house requires Jia and Yi wood to meet metal (Jia and Yi with metal can build a house). The image of the black path requires Ren and Gui water combined with earth (earth and water together form the black path). A divine rat encountering Dinghai signifies heavenly kitchen with food. The Weaver Girl is considered noble when associated with 'Niu Jin Niu' (Xinchou).

When the stem falls in the bright position and meets wood, men are prone to suffer from severe wind illness (with more Bing and Ding stems and fewer Jia and Yi stems); when the stem falls in the hidden earth position and meets Ren, women may develop a lump in the lower abdomen (if there are also Ren and Gui stems along with Bingxu or Dinghai, the lower abdomen becomes blocked, leading to illness in women). If the day stem is located at the gate or door, it harms the wife (Dingyou, Dingmao, Bingwu, and Bingzi stems harm the wife and indicate bad fortune); if the hour star is located at the mechanism or key point, the children will be few (Jiashen is the prison mechanism and also indicates the kitchen). Too much metal indicates instability and lack of settlement (too much metal prevents the building of a nest); too much water indicates being away from home. The pattern of Bingshen is bright and allows for singing and dancing together (Bingshen is bright fire); the pattern of Yimao is strong and indicates wealth and prosperity in music and entertainment (Yimao represents a forest, and if it is secure, wealth and prosperity follow).

First coming across Geng and then Jia with a strong self, one will have wealth and honor, enjoying rich horses and fine clothes; first coming across Jia and then Geng, but only achieving half the way, one can only live in a poor and humble dwelling. When wood is weak and metal is strong, wealth will scatter and people will part, needing to seek food in another town (when there is little wood and much metal, gains and losses of wealth are as easy as turning over one's palm); when wood is flourishing and metal is weak, one's height and power will be strong, being the origin of gaining official salary. If the nest is already built and the food god is strong, it is because earth meets heavy壬癸 for mutual assistance; if the granary is fully equipped, it is because乙wood is added and the fields are numerous (乙未, 乙丑). If it is swallowed by a dragon, the head, face, eyes, and eyes will be difficult to complete (甲辰, 庚辰, indicating injury to the head and eyes); if the terrace and pavilion are strong, then fame and success will be prominent.
