The seventh section is about the Ghost of the Room.
Charting guides: Liu Yao Divination Chart, Da Yan Yarrow Stalk Divination
A monkey and a horse together bring joy. (The monkey is a star of playfulness, and it delights in riding horses. If the palace falls in Bingwu or the person's body and destiny star is a horse, then the person will have a life of riding fine horses and wearing luxurious fur, enjoying a happy and charming lifestyle.) The tiger and leopard in the Shen palace are fond of moving around. (Jiashen is a locked arrow, Bingshen is a trap, Wushen is a large monkey, Gengshen is a bow trap, and Renshen is a water ravine. These palaces are all dangerous places for tigers and leopards. Those born in autumn, regardless of day or night, are in a dead end; if born in spring or summer, they will be indecisive in their actions, often troubled by worries, unable to hold onto ancestral property, and constantly moving from place to place.)
The dragon in theWu Palace (Wu) actually gains prosperity. (The dragon is a strong and vigorous creature, representing the essence of yang energy; Wu is the proper position of yang. The dragon is born in spring and falls in Jiawu, Bingwu, and Renwu, where it resides and receives abundant blessings. However, it requires the assistance of clouds, winds, thunder, and rain in the pillar to become a person of great fortune—this is the position of the flying dragon in the ninth and fifth, known as the Nine in the Fifth. Such a person would have the phoenix pavilion and dragon palace, eight-colored eyebrows, jade steps and golden halls, and eyes with double pupils.)
Eagles and snakes are not of the same kind. (The eagle corresponds to Jiwei. Snakes are born in summer and autumn during the day, and if they appear in this open field without grass or trees, they may suffer injuries to their head and face, or even die prematurely; the same applies to the years and cycles. An eagle is a bird of attack, while a snake is a winding creature, so even though they both reside in this palace, it is still a place of absolute misfortune.) Foxes and dogs are also not of the same kind. (The dog is what the fox fears. The ruling star is 'Heart Mansion Fox,' and the body and destiny star is 'Lou Jin Dog.' If this star appears in the years or cycles, those born during the day will lose their lives, while those born at night will experience fear and unrest.)
The combination of 'Niu Jin Niu' and 'Jiao Mu Jiao' in the same palace indicates that relatives will suffer from loss of spirit and distress. (Jiao is a female dragon without scales, and has a horn, so cattle fear it. If this occurs in autumn or winter during the day, and the palace position is in the outskirts, with the annual and yearly cycles arriving here, it will cause the mother's death and harm women and young children.) The combination of 'Bao' and 'Zhu' in the same palace indicates the death of a young child. (Bao and Zhu are not compatible. When these two stars fall together, it indicates a lifetime of few children and continuous legal disputes.)
Crows and pheasants favor the Chen position. (Jiachen, Wuchen, and Gengchen are the Dragon Gate positions. When crows and pheasants fall into this palace, they transform into golden phoenixes making noise at the Dragon Gate, which is auspicious for birth during spring and autumn at daytimes, leading to high status.) Pigs and sheep avoid the You position. (Xinyou is the knife砧, and Guiyou is the heavenly altar, both are the death positions for pigs. They particularly fear birth during the first hour of the Zi period in February and August, which is precisely the time for worship and sacrifice of animals; if this occurs in the year or destiny, it will result in certain death with no salvation.)
Wolves and rats gathering together are either villains or thieves; (Wolves are greedy and fierce, rats are fond of digging and stealing. When these two elements are in the same palace, those born during the day are greedy villains; those born at night with the palace position falling on the Black Path will certainly be thieves who dig through walls and climb through windows; if the momentum is strong, they will gather in groups and act recklessly.) Chickens and rabbits meeting together can be guests or hosts. (Chickens are domesticated spiritual birds, while rabbits are wild creatures. Although they are different kinds, they do not harm each other when in the same palace. If they fall in the palace of Zi, Wu, Mao, or You, it is especially suitable for business or establishing a career through skills.)
In the vast ocean, the dragon often brings joy to people. (The vast ocean refers to Renzi and Guihai. Dragons are yang creatures, residing in the position of Nine in the Fifth, capable of bringing rain and saving the people. Moreover, when they are in the vast ocean, and born in spring and summer during the day, they indicate a person who is broad-minded, open to advice, generous, and helpful. ) In the mountains and forests, tigers and leopards often harbor anger. (Mountains and forests refer to Jiayin and Yimao. Tigers and leopards rely on them for shelter. During autumn and winter at night, tigers and leopards are powerful; but if born during the day, they fear hunters. When they see prey, they cannot catch it, thus generating resentment. Those with such a destiny are usually cruel, unkind, greedy, and indulge in excessive eating and drinking.)
A fox injuring a chicken or a pheasant indicates a calamity for female relatives and young children; if the person's destiny stars are chicken or pheasant, and they are born at night or undergo the Guimao period, or if the year, destiny, or limit encounters the Heart Mansion, there will be disasters for women and children, and the person themselves will also suffer hidden injuries and frequent illnesses. A sheep encountering a tiger or leopard requires extra caution regarding elders. If the sheep is in the mountain forest palace, born in autumn or winter, or undergoes the Bingyin or Renyin period, and encounters tigers, leopards, jackals, or wolves in the stars or limits, those born during the day will suffer from the punishment of parents, while those born at night will face personal misfortune.
The leopard entering the position of the犴 indicates a need to beware of calamities involving livestock. (If the leopard is in the mountain forest palace, or if it is in the Yiwei period, or if the meteor appears in the major or minor limits of the 'Well Wood犴', it signifies that livestock will be sacrificed, suffering from plague and dying.) When the犴 enters the dragon palace, it also indicates disturbances from false alarms. (The dragon fears the犴. When the犴 reaches the water channel, and it is born in spring or summer during the day, or if it is in the Gengchen period, or if the meteor appears in the major or minor limits of the dragon—then the dragon gains strength and authority, leading to conflicts: the nobleman will lose his position and office, and the wealthy will suffer financial loss and legal disputes.)
The rat is timid and intelligent, while the wolf is cunning and deceitful. These two stars are suitable to be in the Black Path, and they become strong in autumn and winter nights, as they are both dark animals. When the tiger encounters the rat, it relies on its superior position to oppress the weak. The rat fears the cat, and since the tiger resembles the cat in shape, the rat becomes terrified upon seeing the tiger and lies on the ground, unable to move, inevitably being oppressed. If the tiger is in a prosperous period and the rat appears in the small limit of a star, it indicates that although one may be successful in that year, there will be financial loss and disputes.
A dog meets a strong wolf and is subdued by strength. (When a dog is in winter night, and the year, master cycle, and small cycle indicate "Kui Mu Wang," it signifies disputes and lawsuits, where the dog is controlled by others and cannot achieve its desires.) If it is quiet, it is the snake and worm stretching in the grass. (The four palaces of Yi Chou, Yi Wei, Jia Zi, and Jia Xu are places where snakes and worms rest, and they are prosperous in all seasons.)
The frightened animals are the deer and the elk colliding with the knife砧. (Jiashen, Gengshen, and Xinyou are places where metal is strong, so they transform into medicinal arrows and knife砧; if born in autumn, they will surely suffer harm.) The tigers and leopards move stealthily across the woods, and it is suitable to travel through the mountains and valleys. (Tigers and leopards are hidden birds that prefer to see fire. When their position falls in the午宫, and they move through Gengyin, their fortune will be favorable.)
A dragon hidden and riding a boat prefers to dwell by rivers and lakes. (所谓遁迹, means being born in autumn or winter. The Jiazi stem transforms into a boat. If the palace position falls here, it is favorable to have the Renzi, Renchen, and Guihai periods, leading to wealth and honor.) A deer and a獐 living together can gather guests for a banquet. (The獐 and deer are both forest animals. If the main star 'Willow Earth獐' is located in a forest area, and the meteorological limit also has 'Zhang Moon鹿', it indicates good fortune and celebration.)
The meeting of "Nǚ Tǔ Fú" and "Niú Jīn Niú" signifies the joy of marriage and union. (Nǚ refers to the Vega star, Niú refers to the Altair star, and these two stars meet on the night of the Qixi Festival across the magpie bridge. If the main star "Nǚ Tǔ Fú" is born in the seventh lunar month at night, and a meteor is observed during the small limit period of "Niú Jīn Niú," there will be a sign of marriage that year.) "Zhěn Shuǐ Yǐn" is controlled by the rooster and the pheasant. (Yǐn is afraid of the rooster and the pheasant. Those born in spring, summer, or during the day are to be avoided, and if the year or destiny encounters these, there may be unexpected calamities.)
Deer must constantly avoid tigers and leopards. (Deer fear tigers and leopards. If the palace position falls in the mountain forest, and if it is born in autumn or winter at night, and if the year, destiny, or life span encounters them, the calamity will be severe.) One should be genuinely fearful and anxious if mice, bats, or swallows enter the nests of snakes and eels. (Dingsi represents a snake's nest, and Xinsi represents eels; these three creatures are all to be avoided. If this palace position falls in this area and is born in spring or summer, it indicates a life of insufficient food and clothing, and also leads to the harm of children — the original text here has a missing character '刑妻' after '只要', but it is recorded as is without supplementation.)
When encoffining is about to take place and death is imminent, it is associated with the pile of debris in the land of foxes and badgers. Jimao is the land of badgers, and Guimao is the land of foxes. If these three birds fall into this palace, it is not suitable whether they are born during the day or at night. If the year, luck, or the large and small limits encounter this, it indicates official punishment, legal troubles, and unusual illness; otherwise, it will also cause legal troubles with the parents and harm the wife.
All stars are useful or not depending on whether they are timely and have the authority of generation and transformation. For example, if a dragon is born in the second month, it is called an emerging dragon; if born in the third month, it is called a peach blossom wave warm with prominent horns; if born in the fourth or fifth month, it is called a rain dragon, capable of benefiting many. These are all considered timely and useful, but they must fall in places like the sea, rivers, ponds, or caves. To make an accurate judgment, one must understand the importance of the four seasons and the brightness and darkness of day and night. Do not fixate on one aspect alone.
When the three limits (San Xian) achieve nothing, one must examine whether the main star is in a proper pattern (ge) and whether it appears or disappears. The three limits refer to the great limit (Da Xian), the small limit (Xiao Xian), and the meteor limit (Ling Xing). If the three stars' transformed paths (hua dao) are weak, and they mutually devour each other, fight against each other, and are not at peace, then we should turn to examine whether the main star is in a proper pattern or not, and whether it is timely or not. If the main star is in a proper pattern and timely, even if there are events, they will not cause great harm. But if the three stars fight and cannot form a transformation, the main star is restrained and has no rescue, then death is inevitable. In general, this discipline of star and禽 (qin) requires one to understand clearly whether one is in a favorable place or not, whether one is timely or not, whether there is a transformation or not, and whether there is usefulness or not.所谓得 (so-called "getting") refers to, for example, the dragon (Jiao Long) being strong in spring and summer, and preferring rivers and seas; the tiger and leopard (Yin Wei) of the寅 position (Yin) being strong in autumn and winter, and enjoying living in mountains and forests, taking advantage of wind and mist (fengxia).
Bright birds dislike falling in dark places, and hidden dwellings dislike falling in bright directions. Arrows and hunters are what wild animals fear. Wild animals are suitable to be born at night. (Arrows and hunters are what wild animals fear. If it is in spring or summer, there are none of these; if born at night in autumn or winter, it will not harm them.)
The knife and砧, and boiling water and fire, are most feared by flying birds. (Flying birds born in daylight can fly high and are not harmed; if there is misfortune, it will be light.) Flying birds most fear entering the Heavenly Net, which brings disaster like that of hunters in mountains and marshes. (The Heavenly Net refers to Jia Xu and Yi Hai. If a flying bird's destiny falls in the four directions, and it is born in autumn or winter at night, and the year or destiny also meets these, there will be many troubles, continuous legal troubles and punishments.)
Wild animals are most troubled when encountering the upper earth net, and disasters and evils must be guarded against. (The earth net refers to Jiachen and Yisi. If the destiny palace of wild animals is located in the mountains and forests, and they are born in winter during the day, and the year or destiny cycle coincides with this, then severe cases may result in sudden misfortunes, while lighter cases may lead to harming children and spouses.) Birds are most affected when encountering Bing and Ding, leading to wandering and drifting. (If the bird's palace is located in the mountains and forests, and they are born in winter at night, encountering Bing and Ding indicates a fire calamity, also known as the wandering star. This person will not inherit ancestral property, like a broken branch drifting about, surviving by moving from east to west.)
Wild animals meet壬癸 and will drift away, leaving the family with nothing but four walls. (壬癸 are water channels. If born during the summer day, it is the sudden flood evil spirit, and the method of judgment is the same as the previous one.) When the small limit and the body's destiny are in conflict, a song of薤露 is sung. (所谓相冲 means the six palace evil spirits:子午, 卯酉, 丑未, 寅申, 巳亥, 辰戌 are opposite. For example, if the body's destiny palace isRenzi, and the small limit palace isBingwu, etc. The original text mistakenly wrote「巳亥」as「己亥」, and it is now recorded as such.)
When the Tai Sui and the destiny period coincide, the illness is terminal. The Tai Sui is the ruling star of the destiny. For example, if the ruling star is the Horn mansion and the person is born in autumn or winter, and then during their life journey they reach a dry and barren place, and both the large and small limits encounter tigers and leopards, or if a meteor appears with the Well Wood Ox, this is an example. Whether one is noble, humble, wise or foolish is all recorded in the five rulers. If the ruling star enters a proper pattern, the person is noble; if it is in an inappropriate place and does not transform properly, the person is humble; if the transformation is strong and the auspicious stars are thick, the person is wise; if born at an inauspicious time, the palace position is not suitable, and the five stars clash, the person is foolish.
Good and bad fortune, happiness and misfortune, are to be carefully examined within the three birds. (If the paths are strong and powerful, and they are in the right time and place, then it is good. If there is conflict, conquest, or mutual consumption, then it is bad. The three birds refer to the great limit, the small limit, and the meteor. They must be calm and harmonious, and not consume each other, to show benefits.)
Star and禽 (a term often translated as "birds" or "creatures") studies are profound and deep, and the principles of divination are intricate and precise. Scholars who study these matters should strive for clarity, just as a mirror reflects form accurately or an echo responds to a call without the slightest error. If one can truly achieve precision down to the finest detail, then although this text may be simple, its principles are indeed reliable. This summary encapsulates the main idea of the entire passage, and I hope scholars will diligently pursue this study.
