Divination Texts
Best browsed once one main system is familiar, as a way of comparing how different methods treat the same kind of question.
One above, one in the middle, one below; the great communicating trigrams.
The divination tool for Lingqi consists of twelve pieces of chess, divided into three groups—upper, middle, and lower—each containing four pieces. After casting them, the number of pieces showing characters in each group is counted to form a hexagram, resulting in a total of 125 hexagrams. In this case, one piece shows a character in each group, named "Great Communication," symbolizing continuous upward progress. All three groups receive pure yang energy, corresponding to the trigram Qian (Heaven) among the Eight Trigrams, located in the Northwest direction. The symbolic interpretation states that starting from something small and gradually achieving a grand scale, the journey will not involve hardship or wandering; rising steadily from a low position, one eventually reaches wealth and prosperity. Therefore, this hexagram is favorable for traveling far and pursuing endeavors, but unfavorable for concealing talent or remaining inactive. The poetic interpretation uses the allusion from the "Revolution" hexagram in the Zhou Changes (I Ching), "A gentleman transforms like a leopard," comparing the leopard shedding its fur to reveal brilliant patterns, and a person riding a dragon to bring good fortune naturally. Even if one is poor and simple, they can bear the weight of wealth and prosperity, and everything can be renewed and improved.
One above, one in the middle, two below; the hexagram is the gradual transition to prosperity.
This hexagram shows one line at the top, one in the middle, and two at the bottom, named "Gradual Prosperity." It signifies gradual success and the need to wait for the right opportunity. The yin lines are each in their proper positions, paired with the trigram Xun (Wind) from the Eight Trigrams, located in the southeast direction. The image says: stay in your homeland and expand your business, manage your property with capable people, and your family will become both wealthy and esteemed. However, official rank and titles are not yet attainable, and achievements should be postponed. The poetic description says that good fortune has already arrived at the gate, with a golden rooster leaping at dawn to announce the morning. The interaction between yin and yang energies is harmonious, allowing one to return in glory on a colorful phoenix. The phrase "waiting for the right time" means that wealth arrives first, while status comes later; one cannot rush it.
One above, one in the middle, three below; a prosperous and joyful hexagram.
This hexagram shows one coin at the top, one in the middle, and three at the bottom, named "Joy and Celebration," indicating the family's wealth and prosperity. The pure yang energy is in its proper position, matching the Qian hexagram, located in the northwest. The symbolic interpretation states that the situation is grand and prominent, with ample silver and silk in the household, all necessities available, and affairs properly managed, so that things come naturally without the need for striving. The poetic interpretation says that a group of noblemen approach the door, bringing continuous joy into the house; wealth and honor are naturally attained, and all matters of life are complete and without flaw. The overall judgment of the hexagram falls on the four words "without seeking, one obtains": at this time, it is not advisable to struggle forcefully, but rather to maintain the current situation and accept the benefits calmly.
One above, one in the middle, four below; the卦 is Prosperous Abundance.
In this hexagram, one coin appears at the top, one in the middle, and four at the bottom, named "Prosperous Abundance," indicating smoothness and security. The Yin energy is strong and properly positioned, paired with the Xun hexagram, located in the southeast direction. The symbolic interpretation first states that wealth and status have reached their peak, then warns: when the heavens are full, they will tip over; people must follow the ebb and flow of fortune, advancing or retreating in accordance with the seasons. In this way, descendants will flourish and multiply, passing on in countless numbers. The poetic verse describes a light boat riding the waves swiftly, all business endeavors being timely, and traveling together with a nobleman, from which all kinds of blessings will naturally follow. The concluding statement is "keeping in tune with the times": at the peak of prosperity, one must know when to hold back and when to let go.
One above, two in the middle, one below · Joyful Path Hexagram
This hexagram shows one coin at the top, two in the middle, and one at the bottom, named "Joyful Path." It signifies first alarm followed by joy. Yang strength is on the outside, and Yin softness is within, paired with the Fire hexagram, located in the direction of Due South. The symbolic interpretation says that the exterior is strong and vigorous, while the interior is gentle and harmonious, aligning with people and nature to achieve completeness and wholeness. This is an appropriate time to cultivate one's character and preserve one's life, allowing the spirit to travel with the divine. The poetic interpretation says that two people harmonize and generate joy, and whatever they seek or plan will succeed. Although there may be disturbances from cunning people like "green snakes" along the way, ultimately they cannot harm one's benefits or reputation. Alarm occurs halfway, and joy comes at the end, which is the origin of the "Joyful Surprise" image.
One above, two in the middle, two below · The卦 of alarm and fear
In this hexagram, one piece is shown at the top, two in the middle, and two at the bottom, named "Startle and Terror," indicating a minor danger. Yin energy has reached its extreme while Yang energy is isolated, paired with the mountain trigram, located in the Northeast. The symbolic explanation compares it to a scene from a farmer's life: a rooster crows loudly on the roof during the day, stretching its neck, while a hen is disturbed by a wild cat beneath the wall. The rooster hears the noise and rushes over to save it, thus avoiding injury or collapse. This shows that danger is indeed present, but there is a rescue and relief, so it is only judged as "minor danger." The poetic explanation warns to be cautious of hidden traps, for there will be waves on the rivers and seas. Places where joy and entertainment were previously found, when looked back upon, have turned into sorrow and illness.
One above, two in the middle, three below; the hexagram of abundant years.
In this hexagram, one piece is shown at the top, two in the middle, and three at the bottom, named "Yearly Abundance," indicating suitability for agricultural activities. The retreating yin energy gives way to the arrival of yang energy, paired with the hexagram of Fire, located in the direction of Due South. The symbolic interpretation states that during the morning of the first lunar month, the star of years moves to the "Great Beam" among the twelve earthly branches, and the east wind brings the melting of ice, making it most suitable for you to plow fields and raise silkworms. By the end of the year, you will surely achieve a bountiful harvest, bringing great joy. The poetic interpretation says that all accumulated grievances are dispelled, and with the arrival of spring, all things flourish. Agricultural and sericulture activities will benefit your family. Digging wells to drink from and tilling fields to eat from, the people all find their own happiness. For any inquiries concerning farmland, cultivation, or accumulation, this hexagram indicates good fortune.
One above, two in the middle, four below; the hexagram of minor caution.
In this hexagram, one piece is shown at the top, two in the middle, and four at the bottom, named "Small Caution," indicating the need for careful vigilance. Yin energy is strong and restrains Yang energy, paired with the mountain hexagram, located in the Northeast. The symbolic interpretation states that calamity arises from below, so one should be cautious of servants and household help, as they are secretly conspiring and planning to harm the master. The poetic interpretation then asks: the cooking pot has been lost, where is the firewood? The family door must beware of fire hazards; wealth will eventually be lost, and servants must be particularly cautious. Therefore, this hexagram is not a major misfortune, but internal troubles originate from those nearby, so prevention should be done early and caution should be exercised in small matters.
One above, three in the middle, one below; the hexagram of attainment.
This hexagram shows one coin at the top, three in the middle, and one at the bottom, named "Achievement," indicating self-sufficiency. The pure yang energy is all in the correct position, matching the Qian hexagram, located in the northwest. The symbolic interpretation says that the mind and aspirations are clearly expressed and can be fully realized, coinciding with favorable fortune, with sufficient wealth coming in and enough people available to serve. The poetic interpretation draws from the "Wenyan" section of the "Zhou Changes" Qian hexagram, saying "Clouds follow the dragon, winds follow the tiger," meaning that when the momentum and timing align, like-minded people naturally follow. As long as one remains upright and just, one's status, tools, and reputation will be preserved, and one's fame can reach the imperial court. The key to the interpretation lies in the character "value" (值), meaning that what is obtained is not forced, but comes at the right time.
One above, three in the middle, two below · the hexagram of affairs succeeding

Yin and Yang energies are harmonized, matching the trigram Xun, located in the southeast direction. The image says that previously, all matters were not in accordance with one's wishes, but now finally things can proceed according to one's will, and all affairs are orderly and clear, no longer confused. The poetic verse says that one has been in hardship and waiting for a long time amidst the dust and wind, sitting alone in a dim room with no one to understand; until the right opportunity comes and a person with a sword looks favorably upon you, then success in official positions, fame and reputation will surely come at the right time. This hexagram emphasizes the word "waiting for a long time": the turning point has already appeared, but still relies on others' support to achieve actual results.

In this hexagram, one coin appears at the top, three at the middle, and three at the bottom, named "Talented Arrival," indicating peace and auspiciousness. The gathering of yang energy is strong at the lower position, matching the Qian hexagram, which corresponds to the northwest direction. The symbolic interpretation draws from the "Great Ya" section of the "Book of Poetry," specifically the line "Numerous virtuous men gather together": talented people are gathered in one place, their noble virtues shining brightly, and they rejoice in meeting each other, enjoying long-term happiness without misfortune. The poem also mentions a nobleman assisting from behind, suggesting that it is most appropriate to keep one's talents hidden and ready for use. Do not be surprised that few flowers are on the branches, for such trees naturally bear fruit later. The conclusion advises people not to rush in displaying their abilities; the realization of talent is a matter of time.

The poetic description places this joy within a night scene: sitting alone on a high building, recalling past travels, the moonlight bright as daylight, the river flowing eastward; the promises made in the past will not be broken, and with this promise, a reunion will occur, with laughter never ceasing. This hexagram is favorable for travel, socializing, and keeping appointments, but unfavorable for being confined and inactive.
One above, four in the middle, one below; the worrying hexagram.
This hexagram shows one coin at the top, four at the middle, and one at the bottom, named "Worry and Trouble," indicating isolation and lack of support. Two yang positions are separated by yin energy, paired with the hexagram of Fire, located in the direction of Due South. The symbolic interpretation states that the upper part is weak and the lower part is isolated, thus being schemed against by wicked people; this calamity is like an illness within the body, which cannot be removed all at once, and must wait until the return of yang energy in spring to regain freedom. The poetic verse says that one's career has just begun, and one's family and property are not yet secure, with constant fear and worry pressing on the mind, encountering several dangers, not knowing on which day one will meet a true friend. The conclusion advises waiting and patience, not urging one to act recklessly.

The yin energy is extremely strong yet occupies its position, paired with the Gen hexagram, located in the Northeast. The symbolic interpretation states that government policies are lenient and the constraints between heaven and earth are relaxed, allowing petty people to act freely and prohibitions to be ineffective, with thieves watching the houses. The poetic interpretation says that villains are widespread throughout the four directions, and the sun and moon are obscured by dust and wind. From now on, cultivating virtue and reflecting on oneself may still not fully avoid calamity. The focus of this hexagram is "defense" rather than "attack": since external threats have already taken shape, one can only strengthen self-defense and rely on cultivating virtue to reduce misfortune.
One above, four in the middle, three below; the hexagram of giving orders.

The additional poem says that a group of deer flee, and people compete to chase them, achievements can be obtained at this time, villains have come to an end by today, and the four seas return to peace and harmony. In this hexagram, one piece is visible at the top, four at the middle, and four at the bottom, named "Will Be Damaged," indicating military defeat. Yin energy reaches its extreme and overcomes Yang energy, paired with the mountain hexagram, located in the Northeast. The symbolic interpretation describes wolves, tigers, and leopards roaring continuously, with continuous heavy rain, making battle unvictorious because soldiers are exhausted and morale is low, being oppressed by bandits and suffering many casualties. The poetic interpretation says shooting at wild pheasants will ultimately yield nothing, holding treasures cannot bring money, and both seeking wealth and striving for advancement will fail, and even a single step may bring disaster. The supplementary poem advises: when power is weak, be cautious of enemies and also guard against theft and fire hazards; since human affairs are like this, the heavenly timing has not yet aligned with the right opportunity.

However, the poetic description first presents the dark side: cloudy mist obscures the moonlight, and flowers are partially ruined by rain; one must go through a ritual to remove calamities and eventually gain blessings. At present, it is advisable to remain calm and retreat, seeking stability. For matters concerning prayers, exorcisms, and removing misfortunes, receiving this hexagram indicates divine assistance.

In this hexagram, two pieces appear at the top, one in the middle, and two at the bottom, named "About to Fail," indicating matters of licentiousness and deception. Two yin forces restrain one yang force, paired with the Kan hexagram, located in the direction of due north. The symbolic interpretation describes two women serving one man, with upper and lower forces mutually expelling each other, yin overpowering yang, thus depleting vital energy and leaving it empty. The poetic passage repeatedly uses six "兮" characters to express concern: a solitary yang is so weak, while numerous yins come to seize it, strength has already been exhausted, and even if forced, it cannot last long; be cautious, be cautious, at this time the best course is to preserve oneself. The conclusion points to internal depletion: the failure is not from external enemies, but from secret matters within the vicinity.
Two above, one in the middle, three below · The Trigram of Chaos and Order

The symbolic interpretation describes a gloomy sky with rising clouds, yet Yang energy arises from below. The gentleman emerges to rectify disorder, while the petty person fears punishment. The poetic passage illustrates that true talent must undergo trials: gold is tested through repeated smelting to reveal its purity, and white jade is valued after being repeatedly thrown. The Analects of Confucius, in the chapter Zihan, mentions that fine jade is stored in a box and not admired by others, thus contentedly retreating as described in the Zhou Changes (I Ching) Duan hexagram, "Fei Dun" (A Quiet Retreat), calmly withdrawing and content with poverty.

The poem says that disputes and words will bring disturbances, and business endeavors will certainly suffer. If one can cultivate yin virtue and receive hidden help, then one may hope to avoid calamity. The hexagram name "Not Yet Returned" is the conclusion: at present, one cannot return or achieve success, so it is advisable to remain temporarily in a place and accumulate virtue in anticipation of the right time.

Two instances of yin energy are in abnormal positions, paired with the Zhen hexagram, located in the direction of Due East. The symbolic interpretation says to hide gold and jade, boast about wealth, yet refuse to settle debts owed to spirits, so the deities no longer bestow blessings. The poetic explanation details the reason: relying on wealth one forgets one's origin, excessive greed leads to losing the middle path, and deliberate deceit results in lack of divine protection. The way of the deities does not favor anyone, and they will not unjustly grant merit. This hexagram warns not against having wealth, but against relying on wealth and forgetting one's roots, as well as making vows without fulfilling them.

The symbolic interpretation states that both upper and lower parts are stable, so no evil thoughts arise in the heart, leading to a state of calm without worry, as long as one does not listen to rumors. The poetic imagery draws from Liu Yuxi's "Wuyi Xiang" ("Old Houses of Wang and Xie in Wuyi Lane"): a pair of swallows return to the south to seek out the old homes of the Wang and Xie families, and in the quiet spring day within the hall, one can entrust their life. For any matters of doubt or suspicion, if this hexagram is obtained, one should conclude that there is no problem.

The poetic interpretation describes a dragon spitting water and causing rain in spring, making grass and trees sprout new branches after being moistened; it also expresses joy at having an elder personally guide me, thus beginning a path from a dead end. The power of this hexagram comes from reputation: once virtue and prestige are established, evil naturally retreats.
Two above, three in the middle, four below; the hexagram of great gain.
In this hexagram, two pieces are shown at the top, three in the middle, and four at the bottom, named "Great Gain," indicating benefit in wealth. The yang energy in the center controls the yin energy, matching the Kan hexagram, located in the direction of due north. The symbolic explanation uses the story from "The Warring States Strategies · Qi Strategies" about the famous dog "Han Zilu" chasing a rabbit: Han Zilu chases a rabbit, which cannot run away, and the bitten rabbit is in front while the dog is behind, repeatedly capturing it, and the rabbit cannot escape at all. This describes the certainty of obtaining what is sought, and not just once. The poetic explanation says there are no thorns on the road, so there is no need to lament oneself; seize the opportunity to seek fame and profit, and through diligent effort, one can establish a successful family business.
Two above, four in the middle, one below · the declining and fading trigram
In this hexagram, two pieces appear at the top, four at the middle, and one at the bottom, named "Decay and Decline," yet it signifies a revival from decline to prosperity. A weak yang energy rises from below, matching the Zhen trigram, located in the direction of Due East. The symbolic interpretation states that sages succeed one another through generations, though they may experience a period of decline, they ultimately achieve revival. This is likened to the poem from the "Great Ya" section of the "Book of Songs," "Continuous Melon Vines," which describes large and small melons growing continuously and gradually ascending. The poem also references the legend of Liu Chen and Ruan Zhao entering Tiantai Mountain and encountering immortals: dreaming of ascending the path to Tiantai Mountain, with bright moonlight during the climb, marveling at the different spring scenery elsewhere, and once again seeing the flourishing flowers and trees of the past. The hexagram's conclusion is that decline does not mean extinction, but rather the restoration of former prosperity.
Two above, four in the middle, two below · the divination for avoiding calamity
In this hexagram, two pieces appear at the top, four in the middle, and two at the bottom, named "Avoiding Disaster," indicating a need to remain still and avoid misfortune. The symbolic interpretation states that summer departs and autumn arrives, with frost and dew causing disaster, birds and beasts grow thick fur like felt, and grass and trees wither (the last two characters are damaged and marked as uncertain with "□," without conjecture). The poetic interpretation says that rash actions will collide with the earth's net, and reckless undertakings will fall into the heavenly net; only caution is the best strategy, and early withdrawal preserves peace. The additional poem states that heaven and earth are now desolate, and all things suffer damage, with jackals occupying the main paths—using the phrase "jackals block the road" from the "Later Han Book" to indicate that wicked people are in power, and the virtuous should only temporarily hide.
Two above, four in the middle, three below · The Hexagram of Enlightenment
In this hexagram, two pieces appear at the top, four at the center, and three at the bottom, named "Fame" (发蒙), indicating that heavenly grace is bestowed. Yin energy transforms and Yang energy arrives, paired with the Zhen trigram, located in the direction of Due East. The symbolic interpretation states that when Yin energy reaches its extreme, Yang energy arises, and the creatures that have been hibernating begin to stretch and move. The court issues a general pardon, and the sound of bells and drums resounds loudly. The poetic interpretation says that after Yin reaches its peak, a time of smoothness and ease comes, and the burrows of hibernating creatures are just beginning to open. At the time of the three Yang energies harmonizing, it is most appropriate to take action, and both fame and profit will come. The supplementary poem describes an even more grand scene: sunlight shines through the heavenly gate, breaking through colorful clouds, and great grace is bestowed throughout the nine provinces. All things receive the nourishment of the sage's influence at once, and the people rejoice as if drunk. This hexagram is most suitable for those seeking to clear wrongful accusations or to be relieved from long-term hardship.
Second Upper, Fourth Middle, Fourth Lower · The Hexagram of Sickness and Thought
This hexagram shows two pieces on top, four on the middle, and four on the bottom, named "Disease and Thought," indicating exhausted wisdom. Yin energy is extremely strong and has become excessive and licentious, paired with the坤 (Earth) hexagram, located in the southwest direction. The symbolic interpretation says that excessive Yin energy causes minor ailments; people lie stiffly, full of sorrow, looking up at the sky and then bowing down, with no way forward or backward. The poetic description expresses continuous sighing: the path of life is difficult and fate is adverse, calamity has reached oneself, spirit is exhausted, and heaven no longer favors me. Alas, my illness has reached a dangerous stage. This hexagram indicates a prolonged and recurring illness when used for divination about disease, and indicates exhausted wisdom and strength when used for divination about affairs. It is advisable to rest quietly and wait for the right time rather than pursuing further actions.
Three above, one in the middle, one below—Bright Yang Trigram
This hexagram shows three lines at the top, one in the middle, and one at the bottom, named "Bright Yang," indicating a minor auspicious outcome. The energy of many Yang forces is in charge and in operation, matching the Qian hexagram, located in the northwest. The symbolic interpretation says that holding an official position is just the right time, with salary coming regularly according to years of service. As long as one works diligently, one should not miss this opportunity. The poetic verse's first line has some errors in transmission (the words "qi que que" are errors from copying, the original is "East wind blows open the nine roads"), meaning that when the east wind blows, all nine roads of the capital become clear, and harmonious energy comes along with the sunlight. From now on, all matters will bring joy, and one can ride the clouds to ascend to the jade platform in one move. This hexagram is auspicious when timely, but hesitation leads to loss.

This hexagram shows three coins on top, one in the middle, and two at the bottom, named "Heaven's Favor," indicating outstanding success and prominence. Yin and yang are properly matched, paired with the Xun hexagram, located in the southeast direction. The symbolic interpretation says ascending high to look afar, seeing the open path in the sky, with the Maiden and the Supreme Sage granting me a talisman, bestowing upon me an eternal, ageless life to preserve my body. The poetic lines use two allusions: the "treasure on the banquet table" from the "Ruxiang" chapter of the "Liji" refers to a scholar waiting to be appointed, while the "selling jade for profit" from the "Zihan" chapter of the "Lunyu" means that although treasures are valuable, they still await a good price; when favorable circumstances arrive, everything becomes easy and beneficial, and there is no need to strive hard for success. The appended poem says that the beautiful person is sought by the gentleman; she possesses virtue and uprightness, bestowing me with blessings, and I wish to remain steadfast and upright, never losing my plans.

In this hexagram, three pieces appear at the top, one in the middle, and three at the bottom, named "Respect and Honor," indicating receiving divine protection. The symbolic explanation draws from a phrase in the Book of Songs: "A bright virtue shines brightly, with a lifespan of ten thousand years without end; the seven stars of the Big Dipper guard and defend me, thus enabling promotion and official rank, bringing prosperity and blessings through generations." The poem also says that a carriage traveling on the road meets no obstacles, a boat floats and reaches the shore, rain and dew fall from the sky, and the family hall becomes bright and new. For questions concerning promotion, protection, and the family's fortune, this hexagram is an excellent response.
Three above, one in the center, four below; suitable for praying to the hexagram.

In this hexagram, three pieces appear at the top, one in the middle, and four at the bottom, named "Suitable for Prayer." "Lai" means to bestow, indicating the heavens bestow blessings. Yin energy accumulates and overcomes Yang energy, matching the trigram Xun, located in the southeast. The image says one frequently encounters strange occurrences, so one should invite a shaman or oracle to perform rituals to dispel evil, pray for blessings, and thus eliminate calamities and resolve troubles, ensuring the safety of the whole family, all due to the power of the deities. The poem says sorrow comes and causes deep sorrow, and when troubles arrive, one must be alert and cautious, waiting until the cold and heat change and the seasons shift before one can escape calamities. The additional poem says disasters and anomalies cause endless worry, with the gathering Yin energy overpowering Yang energy. May we sincerely pray for Heavenly Grace to protect the young and the old, ensuring their health and safety.

This hexagram shows three coins in the upper position, two in the middle, and one in the lower, named "Delivering Goods," indicating abundant wealth. The Yin energy receives external Yang energy, pairing with the Fire hexagram, located in the direction of Due South. The image says that treasures from the southern direction are being transported, offering me fine goods, including precious treasures, golden bowls, and jade cups. This represents wealth coming from outside without effort. The poem uses the extravagant wealth of Shi Chong's Jin Gu Garden during the Western Jin dynasty as a comparison: flowers are in full bloom in the garden, and immortal beings gather mysteriously on the jade platform, pouring out gold and pouring down jade, causing the fortune-teller to be amazed. Everyone becomes intoxicated in the spring breeze several times. For those seeking wealth, receiving gifts, or benefiting from external sources, this hexagram is highly auspicious.
Three above, two in the middle, two below; the trigram without difficulty.
In this hexagram, three coins appear in the upper section, two in the middle, and two in the lower, named "No Difficulties," indicating stability in agricultural affairs. The yin energy does not interfere with the yang energy, and it is paired with the Gen hexagram, located in the northeast. The image says the land is peaceful and trouble-free, with no hardships or obstacles, making it very suitable for farming and labor. It is beneficial for movement and use. The poetic verse describes a wide sea, dissipating clouds, distant postal roads, and colorful phoenixes carrying imperial edicts descending from afar. The people live in peace and contentment, stable as a wall. The last line has a transmission error, where "功民名世垃名世" should be "功名世所夸," meaning the achievements of those pursuing official careers are praised by the world. Divination for agriculture, relocation, or taking office all indicate smoothness and ease.
Three above, two in the middle, three below; the hexagram of respectful harmony.
This hexagram shows three lines at the top, two in the middle, and three at the bottom, named "Gonghe," indicating harmony between superiors and inferiors. Yin and yang complement each other, following the pattern of the Li hexagram, located in the direction of Due South. The image says that those in high positions are upright and straightforward, while those below fulfill their duties, achieving harmony within the family, with all members working together with shared aspirations without conflict, and all desired things being attained. The poetic verse says that joy fills the household, with no obstacles remaining (the last two characters are missing, marked as "□"), and encountering the favor of a nobleman, thus entering a passage of smooth progress. This hexagram concludes with the words "same force": success is achieved through harmony among people.
Three above, two in the middle, four below; the hexagram of Violation and Overcoming.
This hexagram shows three lines at the top, two in the middle, and four at the bottom, named "Violation of Control." It symbolizes a situation where things are contrary and discordant ("fang" is an added character in the transmitted text). Yin and yang are in conflict and mutual control ("gen" is also an added character), and it is paired with the mountain hexagram, located in the northeast. The image explains that those below do not obey those above, those in the middle cannot control those outside, and the upper and lower parts are mutually opposing and controlling each other, leading to the breakdown of laws and order. The poem provides guidance: when encountering mountains, avoid dangerous places; when encountering water, temporarily remain cautious. Wait until the day you return home, and be careful of "two oxen" — this is a cryptic reference, meaning the year and month of the Ox or people born in the year of the Ox. This hexagram indicates discord in matters of family, lawsuits, and partnerships.
