This hexagram has one upper coin hidden, one middle coin visible, and one lower coin visible, named "Respectful Caution," indicating the promotion of virtue. Two instances of yang energy rise from below, matching the Qian hexagram, located in the northwest. The symbolic explanation cites "Clarify virtue and block wrongdoing" from the Zuo Zhuan, meaning to clearly demonstrate good qualities and prevent evil, with the key being to act in accordance with the right timing. The virtuous person is cautious at the beginning, and the gentleman guards against small matters. The poem says there is another path as numerous as the sands of the Ganges, so do not follow a woman to wander; also, do not lament many obstacles, and once successful, be carefree and graceful. The attached poem further explains: during times of peace, be vigilant against danger; during times of difficulty, be cautious against falling. Do not slacken or neglect, for careful beginnings lead to all things being appropriate.
One in the middle, two below · the Mandate of Heaven hexagram
In this hexagram, one upper coin is hidden, one middle coin is visible, and two lower coins are visible, named "Imperial Way," indicating virtue has reached its peak. Yin and yang energies are interconnected, paired with the mountain trigram, located in the northeast. The symbolic interpretation states that heaven and earth jointly achieve great accomplishments, and yin and yang interconnect, thus expanding the scope of endeavors, stretching from west to east. The traces of movement and rest are extensive, making it difficult for others to follow. The poetic interpretation says that a woman stands at the gate, ultimately bringing good fortune, with no obstacles ahead; one may enjoy happiness without suspicion. The additional poem states that great in size and virtuous in morality, achievements are boundless, and the gentleman is appointed while the petty person retreats and hides.
One in the middle and three below, the uncertain hexagram.
In this hexagram, one piece is missing from the upper section, one piece is visible in the middle, and three pieces are visible in the lower section, named "Indeterminate," indicating hesitation and indecision. The gathering of many yang energies is paired with the Qian hexagram, located in the northwest. The symbolic interpretation states that the mind is filled with doubt and hesitation, unable to decide, with no hope of moving forward, and returning is the right course. The poetic passage describes dark matters arising from deep within, misty clouds blocking the inner chamber, the person with whom one shares a branch and vine no longer visible, leaving only oneself in sorrow. The attached poem refers to the meaning of "Lost Sheep in a Forked Path" from the "Liezi · Shuo Fu," implying that too many paths lead to forgetting one's direction, the sky is vast and the ground is empty, so one must be cautious in moving forward or backward, and the way to stability is to remain alone in simplicity.
One in the middle and four below, the卦of evil ministers.
In this hexagram, one piece is missing from the top, one is visible in the middle, and four are visible at the bottom. It is called "Xie Ning" (Slanderous and Deceitful), indicating the accumulation of evil deeds. The influence of many yin forces overpowers the yang energy, and it corresponds to the Gen hexagram, located in the Northeast direction. The symbolic interpretation states that one goes against heavenly principles and betrays the sovereign, disregards moral order, indulges in wicked and deceitful behavior, and causes universal hatred. The poetic interpretation from the perspective of the diviner says: waiting anxiously for a traveler, the matter gradually fades away; even if they meet on the road, they have become distant; promises made to fulfill a lifelong plan have now turned into nothing, with no sign of the person. Another poem states that wickedness obscures the ruler, causing harm to the virtuous, going against the right path and moral principles, leading to the people's resentment, with villains gaining power while the virtuous must hide and retreat.
Second Middle, Lower One · The卦 of Caution and Regret
This hexagram has one upper coin not visible, two middle coins visible, and one lower coin visible. It is called "Cautious Regret," indicating confusion and disorder. Yin and yang energies are misplaced, and it is paired with the Zhen hexagram, located in the direction of Due East. The symbolic interpretation states that the positions above and below are reversed and wrong, making actions inappropriate. East and west are in discord, neither following the other. The poetic interpretation says that heavenly affairs have turned dangerous, and human hearts are deceiving themselves. At this time, one should examine others' words carefully, beware of unjust elements, and be cautious in both advancing and retreating. The meaning of the hexagram "Cautious Regret" is: being cautious can reduce regret, but carelessness leads to regret that cannot be undone.
Two in the middle, two below; it is suitable to begin with the first trigram.
In this hexagram, one piece is hidden at the top, two pieces are visible in the middle, and two pieces are visible at the bottom. It is called "Suitable at the Beginning," indicating that it is appropriate to plan at the beginning and to be cautious about future matters. It has pure yin energy but lacks yang, and it corresponds to the hexagram of K'un, located in the southwest direction. The symbolic interpretation advises deep thinking and long-term consideration, even when things are stable, one should also consider potential dangers. Although there is no current disaster, ultimately there will be loss and downfall, so one should always follow the correct path and avoid deceit. The poetic interpretation cites the line from the "K'un Hexagram" in the "Zhou Changes" (I Ching), "Treading frost, firm ice comes," as a warning: do not treat small matters as routine, for neglecting them may lead to greater difficulties. If one does not remain vigilant when treading frost, one will gradually approach downfall, and when firm ice forms, one may suffer injury from a fall.
Two in the upper trigram, three in the lower trigram; the hexagram is the "Fuhui" hexagram.
In this hexagram, one piece is hidden at the top, two pieces are visible in the middle, and three pieces are visible at the bottom, named "Fukui," meaning "convergence of blessings." Three yang energies support the yin energy, matching the Zhen trigram, located in the direction of Due East. The symbolic interpretation says that virtue can dispel misfortune, and the principles of respect and caution should be followed. Although the current situation is difficult and subtle, blessings and honors will surely arrive. The poetic description compares people to eagles and ospreys in autumn: after autumn comes, their strength becomes more vigorous, and they soar on the wind to reach the moon palace. If one asks when glory will come, it will follow one after another, and fame will eventually reach the highest palace. The blessings of this hexagram are not obtained by chance, but are summoned by respectful and cautious cultivation of virtue.
Two in the middle, four below; Yin thief hexagram.
In this hexagram, one piece is hidden at the top, two pieces are visible in the middle, and four pieces are visible at the bottom. It is called "Yin Deceiver," indicating that there will be misfortune later. Yin energy is too strong and has lost Yang energy, matching the hexagram of K'un, located in the southwest direction. The symbolic interpretation suggests secret harm and plotting against others, which is unfavorable for future generations. Although things are currently going smoothly, they will not remain peaceful in the future. The poetic description says that a flower is just about to bloom, but suddenly encounters wind and rain; although the clouds have dispersed, the sky remains dark with much blackness, and all blessings and good fortune are consumed in vain. The attached poem explains the meaning thoroughly: deceitful actions will lead to a loss of blessings, and such a trend cannot last long. Misfortune originates from oneself, leaving nothing but burdens for future generations. This hexagram warns against gaining benefits through secret schemes.
Three in the middle and one below, the fortune
This hexagram shows one piece missing at the top, three pieces visible in the middle, and one piece visible at the bottom, named "Welfar." It takes the meaning of "Original and Beneficial" from the Qian hexagram in the Zhou Changes, indicating great success. Two places of yang energy are in charge of affairs, matching the Qian hexagram, and the direction is northwest. The symbolic interpretation says that upon leaving home, one meets good fortune and aligns with good people and deeds; there is also a pearl shining at night, preventing confusion. The poetic interpretation says that good fortune comes, bringing fame and honor, and royal favor suddenly arrives; after several years of planting peach and plum trees, in spring they all bloom in the garden. This hexagram signifies a blessing that comes naturally, and for those seeking fame, rewards, or promotion, it will all come to pass.
Three in the upper part, two in the lower part; the Auspicious Blessing Hexagram
In this hexagram, one piece is hidden at the top, three pieces are visible in the middle, and two pieces are visible at the bottom, named "Fuxiang," indicating stability and smoothness. Yin and yang are each in their proper positions, paired with the Gen hexagram, located in the Northeast. The symbolic interpretation states that the calamity in the heavens has dispersed and the disturbances on earth have ceased, with the virtuous people fulfilling their duties. Whether in official positions or in retirement, prosperity and auspiciousness prevail, bringing boundless benefits. The poetic description portrays a flourishing scene: fierce beasts like the píxiū gather in groups, startling the peaceful slumber of the lakes and mountains during the day; within a thousand miles, there is serene unimpededness, with clear waters and fragrant grass extending all the way to the horizon.
Three in the middle and three below, the order of the trigrams.
In this divination, there is one piece missing at the top, three pieces visible in the middle, and three pieces visible at the bottom, named "You Xu." The term "You Xu" comes from the "Book of Documents · Hong Fan," which says "Yi Lun You Xu," meaning that the principles of propriety and order are properly arranged, indicating preservation and peace. The two places of yang energy are pure and strong, matching the Qian hexagram, located in the northwest. The symbolic interpretation says that a phoenix carries a jewel and flies in, stopping in a corner of the courtyard, bringing me good fortune and removing misfortune. The poetic interpretation says that auspicious things and joyful events come one after another, with brilliant colors shining brightly, and the grace of heaven arrives today, bringing both happiness and official favor to this person. This hexagram, when used to divinate the household or one's destiny, indicates stability and abundant blessings.
Three in the middle, four below; the hexagram of overturning.
This hexagram shows one piece missing at the top, three pieces visible in the middle, and four pieces visible at the bottom, named "否倾," indicating that a closed situation is about to overturn and a turning point will come. The ruler should employ capable ministers. Three yang energies are hidden but contain brightness, paired with the Gen hexagram, located in the northeast. The symbolic interpretation says that a gentleman will stand up to face it, while the petty person will bow down. A wise ruler governing the world can distinguish between similar things, just as the "Analects of the Confucian Classic: Yanghuo" says, discerning between purple and red. The poetic interpretation says that withered trees are about to wait for spring, the mountains and rivers are full of refined energy, and a pair of happy magpies are calling continuously at the gate, bringing good news of fame and fortune. This hexagram signifies a sign of transition from "否" to "泰."
Four in the middle, one below; the hexagram of Wei Xing.
This hexagram shows one coin on top not visible, four coins in the middle visible, and one coin at the bottom visible, named "Unformed" (未形), indicating that the matter has not yet taken shape but the dragon is about to ascend. A solitary yang energy rises into yin, paired with the Zhen hexagram, located in the direction of Due East. The symbolic interpretation says that the hidden dragon is about to rise, dark clouds rising from below, bringing blessings to the world. First there is blockage, then joy follows. The poetic interpretation says the crescent moon regains its fullness, the flowers become more vibrant in color, and one walks the path toward the Peach Blossom Spring, eventually meeting immortals. When this hexagram is used for divination regarding affairs, it indicates that although no visible signs are present at the moment, the opportunity has already begun, so one should remain patient and not rush.
Four among two below; the卦 of overturning and returning.
In this hexagram, one piece is missing from the upper section, four pieces are visible in the middle, and two pieces are visible in the lower section. It is called "Dang Fu," indicating that heaven sends calamity to cleanse and repeat; there is no corresponding pure yin energy, and it is paired with the Kun hexagram, located in the southwest direction. The symbolic interpretation describes a furious dragon in the sky, the Thunder God striking his drum, causing clouds to rise and summoning heavy rain, which floods the land. The poetic description seems leisurely: pouring wine from a cup, wandering among flowers outside the railing, in a place of joy, unaware that the sun is setting. The joy is fading, which is the scene before disaster arrives. The attached poem uses the word "xi" six times in succession, asking: the sky is dark, great waters flow, crops are harmed, fish and turtles enter the fields, when will the sun clear up? It is only because virtue has not been cultivated.
Four in the middle, three below; the卦 of withdrawal from the world.
This hexagram shows one upper coin hidden, four middle coins visible, and three lower coins visible, named "Avoiding the World," indicating a retreat to seclusion. It represents the suppression of yang energy by yin energy, paired with the Zhen hexagram, located in the direction of Due East. The symbolic interpretation states that small people gain power while the virtuous lose their path, forcing them to leave their homes and retreat into the marshes. The poetic interpretation warns of disputes and lingering misfortune, advising caution in public and especially guarding against financial loss. Another poem says the emperor's carriage has left the vermilion steps, while sparrows echo in the blue sky; villains occupy higher positions, and the virtuous should remain hidden. This hexagram agrees with the Duan hexagram in the Zhou Changes: it is not cowardice, but discernment of the right time.
Four in the middle, four below; the ghost moves in the hexagram.
In this hexagram, one piece is missing from the upper section, four pieces are visible in the middle, and four pieces are visible in the lower section. It is called "Ghost Movement," indicating that ritual magic and talismans should be used. Two opposing forces of yin energy are in conflict, matching the hexagram of Earth, and the direction is Southwest. The symbolic interpretation describes two hungry ghosts living in the same place, constantly suffering from hunger and emptiness, wanting to enter my house, but fearing the spiritual talisman on the door. The poetic interpretation says that thick layers of hidden yin energy transform into ghosts and spirits, bringing illness and worries (the original text mistakenly uses "you" instead of "yōu" for "worries"); even though talismans can defend against them, one cannot avoid a shock and worry. This hexagram is suitable for divination regarding illness and ghosts, and it is advisable to use exorcism and remedies, but one should not rely solely on talismans.
One above, one below; the hexagram of slight damage.
This hexagram shows one coin appearing in the upper position and one in the lower, while the middle coin is absent, named "Micro Loss." It indicates slight injury but ultimately returning to safety. Two places of yang energy are separated, paired with the Qian hexagram, located in the northwest. The symbolic explanation describes a minor incident: climbing a tree to gather mulberry leaves, falling to the ground and lying motionless, then going to the neighbor's house to ask for medicine, thus meeting a good doctor and avoiding serious injury. The poetic explanation says that trying to take a smooth path leads to disaster; seeking fame and fortune is worse than staying idle. In times of worry, receiving the care of a good doctor allows one to survive with some remaining injury. This hexagram involves alarm and loss, but there is salvation, hence the name "Micro."
One above, two below; coarse and harmonious hexagram.
This hexagram shows one coin on top, two coins below, and one coin in the middle not visible, named "Cuxie," meaningwith difficultyharmonious but ultimately peaceful. Yin and yang are each in their proper positions, paired with the mountain hexagram, located in the northeast. The symbolic interpretation compares it to a newly married wife who initially does not get along well at home, but as long as both parties make efforts, the family lineage can continue. The poetic interpretation says that an unknown girl is holding a spear and spear, and matters of wealth and honor should be sought here; eventually, one will reach a happy state, so one may enjoy pleasure and live comfortably. This hexagram signifies difficulty first and ease later; it is suitable for matters of marriage and partnerships, and one should be patient, not giving up halfway.
One above, three below · The non-cultivation hexagram
In this hexagram, one piece appears at the top, three at the bottom, and one in the middle is absent, named "Not Plowing," indicating the middle is empty. The two places of yang energy are separated, matching the hexagram Qian, located in the northwest. The symbolic interpretation describes the land as hard and the stones as firm, with people only able to look up to heaven in complaint. Farming tools cannot be raised, leading to a poor harvest. This suggests that the conditions themselves do not allow for farming, not due to lack of diligence. The poetic interpretation says that set appointments are like dreams, and without fate, few things succeed. Old friends are likely not met, and only the bright moon shines in the distance. This hexagram indicates emptiness in matters of appointments and cooperation.
One above, four below; ghostly calamity trend.
This hexagram shows one coin at the top, four coins at the bottom, and one coin in the middle not appearing, named "Ghost Disaster" (the original text's "势" is a mistake for "卦"). It indicates the dispersal of emptiness; yin and yang are separated from each other, paired with the mountain trigram, located in the northeast. The symbolic interpretation says there is a malevolent ghost in the house, sitting opposite each other, watching the owner's mistakes, cutting off water and extinguishing fire; the deities in heaven and earth are specifically responsible for examining human faults. The poetic interpretation says an empty house has long been filled with dust, and every time there is a move, it brings about this (the next two characters are missing, marked as "□"); it is only because a person's fate is obstructed that hidden misfortunes will follow. This hexagram indicates the loss of wealth when predicting the household, and hidden damage when predicting one's life.
Two above, one below · the empty fate trigram
This hexagram shows two pieces appearing at the top, one at the bottom, and one in the middle not appearing, which is called "empty void," indicating that hopes will be in vain. Yin and yang energies reverse each other, pairing with the Zhen trigram, located in the direction of due east. The symbolic interpretation describes cutting trees in water and catching fish on mountains, with directions completely reversed, resulting in wasted effort and frustration, ending up with empty hands and no food. The poetic explanation states that when the moon is full, it begins to wane, and the long river is sometimes turbid and sometimes clear. Although it does not necessarily bring disaster or misfortune, it may still lead to a false alarm. This hexagram indicates that efforts to achieve goals or seek wealth will result in labor without reward, and it is advisable to change direction and take a different approach at an early stage.
Two above, two below; the discordant hexagram.
This hexagram shows two pieces appearing at the top, two at the bottom, and one in the middle not appearing, named "Disagreement," indicating that matters will not succeed. Two strands of yin energy fail to unite, pairing with the Earth hexagram, located in the southwest direction. The symbolic interpretation describes two women not distinguishing between seniority and juniority, fighting and then each staying on their own side, entering and exiting separately, even separating their dwellings. This represents the idea of two yin forces repelling each other due to their similarity. The poetic description mentions scattered colorful clouds and flowing water eastward, with a lonely evening full of worries; even if there is nothing happening in the present, troubles will continue until mid-autumn. Any divination concerning partnerships, marriages, or reconciliation that receives this hexagram indicates failure.
Two above, three below · The卦 of Water (Kan)
This hexagram shows two coins appearing above and three below, with one in the middle not visible, named "Xí Kǎn" (Gathered Water). It takes its meaning from the "Kǎn Hexagram" in The Zhou Changes, which says "Xí Kǎn, repeated danger," indicating wasted effort. A solitary yang energy loses its proper position and combines with the Zhèn Hexagram, located in the direction of Due East. The symbolic interpretation says two people travel together, intending to avoid danger, but instead encounter disaster and fall into a well, unable to use their strength or endurance. The poetic interpretation says there is much hardship within the family, and accumulating Yin Virtue is good for progress; in matters of documents and legal disputes, it is like flowers blooming in fire, difficult to achieve real results. Another poem says that one has been careful to prevent small problems, yet still suffers their harm; like walking and stepping into a trap, any movement triggers the mechanism, leading to unresolved misfortune and no chance for good fortune.
Two above, four below · The Revolution Hexagram
This hexagram shows two pieces appearing at the top, four at the bottom, and one in the middle not appearing, named "Come to Change," indicating a sudden change and loss of yin energy. The yin energy is growing stronger, paired with the Hexagram of Earth, located in the southwest direction. The image uses the lines from the "Small Ya" section of the "Book of Songs," "Rain and snow fall heavily," to depict the hardships of travel: frost and snow fall heavily, wetting my clothes, and the north wind blows, preventing me from returning home. The poem describes the moment of joy turning into sorrow, where last night's gold has turned to nothing; even the plans behind me have failed, and the return journey is not smooth. This hexagram indicates stagnation and loss when divining travel or for distant travelers, and it is not advisable to proceed further.
Three above, one below; the hexagram of no merit.
This hexagram shows three upper lines and one lower line, with one middle line not appearing, named "No Merit," indicating futile effort. A single yang line is isolated without support, paired with the Qian hexagram, located in the northwest. The image says going east to gather herbs, climbing Mount Tai, but not finding the rare lingzhi mushroom, only seeing a few clusters of fragrant orchids; although the orchids are fragrant, they are not useful, so one returns empty-handed. The poem says hearing about famous flowers in Luoyang, how could the heart not admire them; going at the right time with high hopes, but returning to find the family's affairs ruined. This hexagram warns against seeking what is not needed: choosing the wrong goal from the beginning, the more effort, the less success.
Three above, two below; the hexagram of rain disaster.
This hexagram shows three coins on top, two coins below, and one coin in the middle not visible, named "Rain Disaster," indicating difficult circumstances. Yin and Yang energies are pressing against each other, paired with the mountain hexagram, located in the Northeast direction. The symbolic interpretation describes continuous heavy rain and flooding that submerges the land, forcing people to build nests in trees like birds, with no smoke rising from homes. The poetic interpretation describes thorny growth everywhere, with the phoenix and luan bird having no branches to perch on; the mind is exhausted and plans are clumsy, leaving no room for eating enough rice and becoming strong. This hexagram indicates unsuitable conditions for dwelling and earning a living, suggesting it is better to temporarily avoid the situation rather than persist forcefully.
Three Up, Three Down · Drought Divination Chart
This hexagram shows three coins appearing in the upper section, three in the lower, and one in the middle missing, named "Drought Disaster," indicating dryness and emptiness. Yang energy is excessive and lacks the regulation of Yin energy, matching the Qian hexagram, located in the Northwest. The symbolic interpretation describes a disaster caused by extreme heat, with the heavens and earth appearing scorched and withered. People look to heaven to summon dragons for rain and search the earth for springs, filled with anxiety and unrest, none finding peace. The poetic description expresses the difficulty of moving forward or retreating, with alternating joy and sorrow; it is like trying to catch the moon in the East Sea, exhausting effort for no result. This hexagram, like the previous one, belongs to natural disasters, representing both water and drought, both indicating that human effort is powerless.
Three above, four below; the卦 of distant attack.
This hexagram shows three pieces above, four below, and one in the middle not appearing, named "Far Pursuit." It indicates a distant pursuit where people flee and wealth disperses. Yin and Yang are separated and not connected, paired with the mountain hexagram, located in the northeast. The symbolic interpretation describes pursuing fleeing bandits, chasing them all the way to the Han Dynasty's Yulang Commandery, far away, recovering my jade and bringing back my cattle and sheep. The first character of the poetic verse originally was "one" (the transmitted text shows a dash shape): one cow with two tails, things are difficult to complete; both fame and profit should be cautious of, neither side is fully satisfactory; encountering someone of the wood element brings vitality, or acting by the water also proves convenient. The supplementary poem says even though greedy, who knows that it cannot be fully achieved; although killing enemies relieves anger, oneself will suffer a loss of three thousand.
Four above, one below; the theft hexagram.
This hexagram shows four lines appearing at the top, one line appearing at the bottom, and one line in the middle not appearing, named "theft." It indicates entanglement and arrest. Yin energy is hidden while Yang energy is isolated, paired with the Zhen hexagram, located in the direction of Due East. The symbolic interpretation says someone stole another's treasure and tried to take it for himself, but his wrongdoing was exposed by people and his arms were bound by ghosts—both human law and ghostly punishment cannot be avoided. The poetic interpretation says there is no need for hardship or effort, but one should beware of theft; persistently seeking without turning back leads to self-harm. This hexagram warns against stealing from others and also against being stolen from.
Four above, two below; the army is disordered.
This hexagram shows four lines appearing at the top, two at the bottom, and one in the middle missing, named "Loss of Order." It takes the meaning from The Zhou Changes (I Ching), "When a military force goes out, it must follow the law; if it does not, misfortune will come." This indicates self-invoked misfortune; yin energy occupies the yang position, paired with the Kun hexagram, located in the southwest. The symbolic interpretation says going against the right path and defying common sense, with mutual harm between yin and yang. Heaven does not offer protection, but instead brings its calamity. The poetic interpretation says the nest of a traveler is overturned, and disaster has already taken root; even being cautious may still lead to imprisonment or lawsuits. If one intends to travel far beyond a thousand miles, even more concern should be given to misfortune befalling at home. This hexagram shows disorder both inside and outside, so one should first correct oneself before acting.
Four Above, Three Below · the Divination of the Unjust Party
This hexagram shows four lines on the upper part, three lines on the lower part, and one line in the middle that is not present, named "Jian Dang" (the corrupt faction), indicating that virtuous talents are suppressed. Yin energy advances and Yang energy retreats, matching the Zhen hexagram, located in the direction of Due East. The symbolic interpretation states that the promotion of wicked and crooked people and the dismissal of upright and virtuous individuals result in everyone not receiving suitable positions, forcing the virtuous to hide and the gentleman to merely sigh. The poetic passage uses two allusions: the "Mengzi · Teng Wengong Xia" mentions that following the rules and driving all day fails to catch even one, while deviating from the rules and intercepting leads to catching ten early in the morning (the original text "Shun Fan Wu Yi Li" is a miswriting of "Fan Qu Wu Yi Huo"); the "Chu Ci · Bu Ju" describes the great bell being discarded and buried in the wilderness, while the small cooking pot makes a loud noise. The reversal of the world's order is precisely the depiction of this hexagram.
Four above, four below · Mouth and Tongue Hexagram
This hexagram shows four upper lines and four lower lines, with one middle line hidden, named "mouth disputes," indicating no good outcomes. Two yin lines mutually control each other, paired with the Earth hexagram, located in the southwest direction. The symbolic text describes a scene of commotion in the village: the east neighbor is marrying off his daughter, the west neighbor is entertaining guests, the pig squeals as it is tied up, and the dog barks as it is beaten; amidst all this noise, one should be cautious of misfortune, as disaster is about to arise. The poetic text says that disputes and words will come one after another, requiring lifelong vigilance against calamities; at home, one should beware of hidden dangers, experiencing both fear and financial loss. This hexagram is unfavorable for lawsuits and disputes, indicating continuous entanglements.
First Section · The Hexagram of Unlightened Dawn
This hexagram shows only one upper line appearing, while the middle and lower lines are not present. It is called "Unlit," symbolizing the image of the sky light beginning to brighten but not yet fully lit. A solitary yang energy does not receive support and is paired with the Qian hexagram, located in the northwest. The symbolic explanation says that the original energy is just beginning to sprout, and all things have not yet taken form. Light has not yet spread throughout, and movement in and out occurs in darkness. At this time, trying to start something new, nothing can be accomplished. The poetic explanation says that relying solely on one's wishful thinking is not a good approach; things are half realized and half lost. Desiring too much leads to the situation described in the "Mencius · Liang Huwang Shang," where one climbs a tree to catch a fish. The last six lines explain the principle: a single beam of wood cannot support a building, and one person cannot start a career. A general's bravery alone cannot quickly quell a rebellion. Establishing a foundation and achieving merit can only be accomplished through the efforts of many people.
Second Section · The Moving Trigrams Divination
This hexagram shows only two pieces appearing at the top, with none appearing in the middle and bottom, named "Migration," indicating wandering and uncertainty. A weak yin energy occupies its position, paired with the hexagram of Earth, located in the southwest. The symbolic interpretation says that the heavens descend in form, and the energy is still floating and not yet solidified, making it impossible to determine clearly. People thus move about in a scattered and uncertain manner, often not achieving their desires, and the situation is prolonged without resolution. The poetic passage draws from the "Analects of Confucius," "Learning to Seek Official Favor," indicating that seeking official positions brings no benefit, and efforts in all directions face obstacles; even if one temporarily succeeds and feels satisfied, encountering a fierce tiger-like danger still requires vigilance. The attached poem states that isolated yin lacks support, the land is vast but the fields are barren and empty, human affairs lack stability, hence unable to settle down.
Three Above, the Hexagram of Unrest
This hexagram shows only three upper lines appearing, while the middle and lower lines are not present, named "Unrest," indicating a lack of stability. Three yang lines stand alone, paired with the Qian hexagram, located in the northwest. The symbolic interpretation states that heaven and earth take form on their own, and people are born within this process. People rise and fall with the movement of qi, thus unable to find peace. The poetic interpretation says that false alarms and losses are double misfortunes (the original text "rain" is a mistake for "two"), so one must be cautious in actions and beware of hidden dangers. If one can follow the advice of the "Step-by-Step" hexagram in the Zhou Changes, to escape by stepping on a tiger's tail, then to achieve peace, one must first sacrifice some wealth. The attached poem further states that the two principles of heaven and earth have already taken shape, and the three yang lines are not empty, but the distinction between good and bad fortune is still unclear, making it difficult to choose.
Four Above: The Divination of Death's Image.
This hexagram shows only four pieces appearing at the top, while the middle and lower pieces are not present, named "dead image," indicating an omen of danger; heavy yin energy occupies its position, paired with the Kun hexagram, located in the southwest direction. The image text says that human beings are destined to die eventually, so ghostly energy arises; with the changing of the four seasons and the succession of cold and heat, the vital energy stagnates and is obscured, not revealed, its form being the condensation of yin energy. The poem says that swallows and sparrows disturb the curtain, and when one wakes from a dream, it has already faded; even if one closes the door and retreats to a secluded place, not interfering with worldly matters, one still incurs disputes. The appended poem uses the story from the "Zuo Zhuan · Chenggong Ten Years" of "disease entering the marrow," indicating that the breath is about to cease, the soul and spirit disperse, the pulse nearly stops, and even a hundred years' plan is discarded carelessly. Even if renowned physician Bianque from Lu is summoned, he cannot save the person.
One middle, issuing the yang trigram.
This hexagram shows only one central line, with the upper and lower lines not appearing. It is called "Fayang," indicating the emergence of vital energy. A solitary yin line without a master, paired with the Qian trigram, is located in the northwest. The image says that the heavenly light is reestablished, the sun and moon shine brightly, and all affairs can be initiated and carried out, with all creatures able to move. The poetic verse says that a grand journey involves a southern expedition, with the clear sky and bright sun and moon; after removing evils, calamities have dispersed (the original "Xiang" is a mistake for "Rang"), reputation spreads and wealth follows. This hexagram represents the initial movement of yang energy, suitable for initiating affairs and traveling, but not suitable for remaining in place.
Second Middle · Favorable Conditions for a Good Harvest
This hexagram shows only two middle lines, with no upper or lower lines appearing. It is called "Yearly Harvest" (the original text's "势" is a mistake for "卦"). It indicates a bountiful harvest, but it will be favorable only after some delay. A single yin line loses support and combines with the hexagram of Kūn, located in the southwest. The image says that heaven and earth are open and unobstructed, and all things flourish. Matters are just beginning to take shape, and by the end of the year there will be a great harvest. The poetic passage says that since one has firmly decided on a course and does not waver, one's achievements will be ahead of others. There is also an unusual piece of good news, which can lead to a swift ascent to the heavens. The additional poem says that although the achievements of heaven covering and earth bearing are great, they still need the nourishment of rain and dew. When the time comes, there will be a harvest, and one can joyfully enjoy the abundant year.
Three Middle·Human Affairs and Trends
This hexagram shows only three middle lines, with no lines appearing in the upper or lower positions. It is named "Human Affairs" (the original text's "势" is a mistake for "卦"). It takes the image of great joy ("怏" is a mistake for "快"). Strong yang energy is in the central position, paired with the Qian hexagram, located in the northwest. The symbolic interpretation says that the situation of human affairs is just beginning, auspicious and suitable for all matters. Those at home will receive blessings, and those traveling will certainly reach their destination. The poetic passage says that there will be many joys at home, and in the midst of wealth and honor, peace will also be attained. All things arise from the mind, and everything appears to be beneficial. This hexagram is auspicious whether the question is about movement or stillness, and it is a rare case in the entire text where both aspects are favorable.
Four Middle · Protection of the Self Hexagram
This hexagram shows only four middle lines, with no lines appearing in the upper and lower positions, named "Preserving Oneself," indicating a small degree of security. Accumulated yin energy is located in the middle, paired with the Kun hexagram, positioned in the southwest. The symbolic interpretation states that ghostly and malevolent energies have not yet become strong, and harmful toxins have not yet taken form. At this time, one should be cautious and cherish one's life, ensuring the household remains peaceful. The poetic interpretation says that flowers meet spring rain and find it hard to retain their beauty, and water flowing eastward cannot flow back. If one blindly pursues fame and fortune, one should beware of troubles arising from idle matters and hidden worries. The concluding poem uses a line from the "Analects of Confucius," "Only in the coldest winter do we know that pine and cypress are the last to shed their leaves": flowers bloom with spring but soon pass, butterflies come when the flowers are already withered, but only the green pine trees can endure the harsh cold.
