A monk asked: 'The bright sun matches the sky's edge, the pearl's light shines on the old capital. The ford joins the dharma sea — what is the meaning today?' The master said: 'When the precious sword is brandished, how could it deal in light and dark?'

A monk asked: 'The branch divided at Jia Ridge and truly succeeded Xiaoyao. Now that the jewelled seat is mounted, let the dharma thunder please sound.' The master said: 'Xiaoyao stands far beyond things; beyond things no cloud glow is born.' [The monk] asked: 'What is the true meaning of his coming from the West?' The master said: 'Standing in the snow was no labour; cutting off the arm was the real mark.' [The monk] said: 'Then one flower opened five leaves, and its fragrance reaches down to this day.' The master said: 'When the cause is complete beyond the three realms, the fruit's fullness is known in the ten directions.'

A monk asked: 'What is the matter of leaving home?' The master said: 'Let go your hands at the edge of a ten-thousand-fathom cliff.' [The monk] said: 'What is the matter of not leaving home?' The master said: 'Far different from the season when one nests peacefully on the snowy ridge; unlike Xu You who hung up his single gourd.' [A monk] asked: 'When the six gates are blocked, how does news get through?' The master said: 'Whom do you know outside, Acharya?' [A monk] asked: 'What about when one slips the halter and unloads the pack?' The master said: 'Change your bones and wash your guts, and head for the Purple Pass; at Yanmen by all means do not carry reed in your beak.' [A monk] asked: 'How do the sages from of old show people?' The master said: 'Different from the season when the first emperor's dragon went forth to transform; far beyond the phoenix roosting and the dust that rises.' [A monk] asked: 'What is a man who understands how to be a guest?' The master said: 'Royal treasure and precious raiment he still casts aside — who would spend kalpas beside another's gate?' [A monk] asked: 'What is the meaning of his coming from the West?' The master said: 'The mud ox at the bottom of the sea roars; the wooden horse in the clouds neighs.' [A monk] asked: 'Many hands wash for gold — who gets it?' The master said: 'The Yellow Emperor never roamed the Red Water; the divine pearl of formlessness is likewise vain.' [A monk] asked: 'What about when snow covers the reed flowers?' The master said: 'Though frozen hard it shows auspicious colour, yet after the sunlight it only deludes people.'

He first paid homage to Luopu and asked: 'Before a single bubble has risen, how does one discern its watercourse?' Pu said: 'Move the boat and you will know the watercourse; lift the oar and you part from the waves.' The master did not agree, so he called on Panlong and put the same question. Long said: 'Move the boat and you do not part from the water; lift the oar and you lose the source.' From this the master entered awakening. A monk asked: 'What is the meaning of his coming from the West?' The master said: 'A stone ram's head looks east.' [A monk] asked: 'What is the eye of the true dharma?' The master said: 'The hole in the staff.' [A monk] asked: 'What is the immovable honoured one?' The master said: 'Waves upon waves, vast and free.' [A monk] asked: 'What is the one phrase of Muping?' The master said: 'It stuffs the void full.' [The monk] said: 'I do not ask about stuffing the void full. What is the one phrase?' The master then struck him. Whenever a newcomer arrived, before allowing him to call and bow, he first had him carry three loads of earth, and showed this verse: 'Beside the southern road, where the eastern hill is low, newcomer, do not decline three turns with the mud. I sigh that you have been long on the road, and being so clear, you still do not understand and so go astray.' The master had a fleshy topknot with spiral hair. The Li family of Jinling, hearing of his reputation for the Way, invited him to receive offerings and treated him with the honours of a teacher. Once they asked: 'What is Muping?' The master said: 'It needs no axe or adze.' [They] said: 'Why does it need no axe or adze?' The master said: 'Muping.' Chan Master Fayan presented a verse: 'The man in Mount Muping has an ancient face and speaks little. Meeting him is like meeting a stranger on the road; to speak of mind is as bright as the autumn moon. His worn robe's thread is not silk, and the one who joins his song is a bird. Today he has come to the city gates; a single bubble was already understood.' After his death his disciples raised a stupa. He was given the posthumous title Chan Master Zhenji, True Stillness.

A monk asked: 'Making offerings to a hundred thousand Buddhas is not as good as making offerings to one man of the Way with no mind. I wonder what fault the Buddhas have, and what virtue the mindless man of the Way has?' The master said: 'When the snow is deep, keep close to the fire; when the body is warm, spring feels late.' [A monk] asked: 'What about when a poor man presents a pearl?' The master said: 'Where did you get it?' [A monk] asked: 'What is the Way?' The master said: 'Turning the carriage back has its share.'

He ascended the hall. A monk asked: 'What is the seamless stupa?' The master said: 'Its hundred treasures are adorned and finished today; how long will its four gates stand wide?' The master then said: 'Even if you could speak of something like a seamless stupa, you would not escape this old monk driving in a peg. How will you escape it?' The assembly had no reply. The master said: 'Get out.'

He called on Huangshan. Shan said: 'When heaven's gate closes, the ten directions have no road. If anyone can speak, he waves his hand and leaves Zhangjiang.' The master said: 'The hibernating door does not open, and the dragon has no dragon phrase.' Shan said: 'That is how you speak.' The master said: 'If it is so, I say plainly it is so; if not, I say plainly it is not.' Shan said: 'Wave your hand and leave Zhangjiang.' Shan asked again: 'Wherever Bian He goes, Mount Jing shows its beauty; what about when the jade seal is passed on by the Son of Heaven?' The master said: 'The spirit crane does not rest beneath the trees; the old rustic does not prize years of great peace.' Shan deeply approved. After he had taken up residence, a monk asked: 'What is the matter handed down?' The master said: 'The dragon spits the water of long life; the fish swallow the endless bubble.' [The monk] said: 'Please, master, pick it out.' The master said: 'Beat the drum and turn the boat's head; the oar pierces the moon in the waves.'

Once, while bathing, a monk asked: 'The master is a man beyond defilement — why then does he bathe?' At that a monk asked: 'The ancestral heirs of Mount Yao — please, master, proclaim them.' The master said: 'Ten thousand devices cannot pick it out.'
