Chapter 29: The Chapter on Military Strife, Part Four (Wuzi Second Month Yihai Day Guiwei Hour)

Charting guides: Da Liu Ren Chart Calculator, Jin Kou Jue Chart

Fourth example: On the day of Yihai in the second lunar month of the year Wuzi, at the hour of Guiwei, Li Shaowen, a government official from Xinghua, was invited to a gathering at Wangning Niuwanyuan. He cast this divination lesson out of concern for the Qing army advancing eastward. The lesson was set with the hour of Hai added to the hour of Wei. The lesson pattern belongs to "Re-examination." The three transmissions, Hai, Mao, and Wei, form a wooden structure, making it "Curved and Straight." In this ten-day cycle, the empty position is in Shen and You. The heavenly plate's Zi and Chou deities are directly over the earthly plate's Shen and You empty positions. The four lessons, from right to left, are: the day stem Yi is lodged in Chen, with Shen on Chen, and Zi on Shen; the day branch Hai has Mao on it, and Wei on Mao. The four heavenly deities on the lessons, Shen, Zi, Mao, and Wei, are successively occupied by Gou Chen, Nobleman, Black Tortoise, and Azure Dragon. The three transmissions are: the first transmission, Wei, occupied by Nobleman and representing wife wealth; the middle transmission, Hai, occupied by Teng Snake and representing parents; the final transmission, Mao, occupied by Tian Kong and representing brothers.

The judgment states: The Qing army is not only unable to advance eastward, but also cannot sustain itself for long. The general stationed in the southwest is attached to the place of growth, yet it is far from the day stem and day branch. Although the enemy symbol is present on the day stem and day branch, indicating troops are hidden along both land and water routes, it is riding on a dead and exhausted atmosphere. Moreover, the first transmission is weak and confined, being squeezed by both sides, while the final transmission is strong enough to control the jiesha. This indicates a solid defense and a weak attack, so it is concluded that the enemy cannot advance eastward or last long. However, the sovereign and the wood group are in harmony, generating the wood energy of spring and summer, which allows them to hold out for now. But once it reaches the year of Chou, the triple harmony of Si-You-Chou will disrupt the wood energy in the three transmissions, and they will be unable to sustain. In the following year's January, this prediction was fulfilled.

Chapter 29: The Chapter on Military Strife · Verification Five (On Jichou Month, First Month, Xinsi Day, Xinmao Hour · The Rebellion of Jiang Xiang in Datong)

The fifth example: On the day of Xinsi in the first lunar month of the year Jichou, at the hour of Xinmao, in Yulin, General Wang, whose name is Pu, had a son serving as a commander in Yangzhou. He heard that General Jiang in Datong had rebelled, and thus he divined to inquire about fortune and misfortune. This divination was set up with the hour of Hai as the starting point added to the hour of Mao. The pattern of the lesson belongs to "the head of the state." The three transmissions are Yin, Wu, and Xu, forming a fire trinity and thus belonging to "ascending fire." In this ten-day period, the empty position is in Shen and You. The heavenly plate's Shen and Si deities are precisely over the earthly plate's Shen and You empty positions. The four lessons, arranged from right to left, are: the day stem Xin is lodged in Xu, with Xu having Wu, Wu having Yin; the day branch Si has You, with You having Chou. The four heavenly deities on the lessons, in order, are Wu, Yin, Chou, and You, each successively riding on the nobleman, Gou Chen, Qinglong, and Xuanwu. The first transmission is Wu riding the nobleman, representing official ghost; the middle transmission is Yin riding Gou Chen, representing wife's wealth; the final transmission is Xu riding Tai Chang, representing official seal.

The judgment states: The You Du is located before the day branch, the thief symbol invades the You region, and with the nobleman overcoming the day stem and initiating the transmission, the combination is tainted by aInauspicious Sha. Warfare in the northwest is certain, and capturing the city is without doubt. The first transmission is prosperous and strong, generating and harmonizing with the final transmission, indicating that traitors inside and outside the city are colluding. The middle transmission, encountering the month builder, overcomes the final transmission, leading to the city being breached and the commander killed. Furthermore, the丁 spirit from the ten-day cycle遁 enters the day branch's yang spirit into the yin spirit, causing bandits on the border to rise up, but eventually they will surrender, because the You Du is in a harmonious position. However, the fire element is strong in spring and summer but weak in autumn and winter, and the Daji Chou, which is the墓 of the day stem, is located on the day branch, indicating being deceived and falling into a trap, so once autumn comes, the matter fails and surrender occurs. The commentator adds: When the day stem and day branch both have the墓, both are confused; when the day branch alone has the墓 of the day stem, the other side confuses me; when the day stem alone has the墓 of the day branch, I confuse the other side.

The commentator cites the "Clear History" to recount the entire course of this military turmoil: On the first day of the twelfth lunar month in the fifth year of Shunzhi, which was Xinmao, Jiang Xiang rebelled in Datong. On the day of Guisi, he took control of Datong. In the first month of the sixth year of Shunzhi, on the day of Xinwei, Jiang Xiang's followers Yao Ju and others killed Wang Changling, the governor of Jining Road, and captured Xinxian. On the day of Guiwei, the bandits in Shanxi, Liu Qian, attacked Dazhou, but were repelled by the forces sent by A Jiluo. On the day of Dingmao in the third lunar month, the bandits Wang Yongqiang captured Yancheng, Yulin, and nineteen other prefectures and counties, and the governor of Yanshui, Wang Zhengzhi, and others died in the battle. On the day of Yimao in the fourth lunar month of the summer, the bandits captured Fenzhou, and the court appointed the Prince of Duanzhong, Boluo, as the general commander of the Western Expedition, and the Prince of Jingjin, Nikan, moved his troops to Datong. On the first day of the seventh lunar month of the autumn, on the day of Wuwu, the regent prince Dorgon once again led an expedition to Datong. On the day of Yichou, Mandahai and Wakeda advanced to Shuozhou and Ningwu. On the day of Bingxu, Wu San Guai and Li Guohan recaptured Yanshui. On the day of Guisi in the eighth lunar month, Dorgon returned to the capital, and the bandits in Shanxi captured Puzhou, Linjin, and Hejin, but were defeated by Meng Qiaofang, and Mandahai recaptured Shuozhou and Mayi. On the day of Dingyou, Boluo captured Xiaoyi, and on the day of Renzi, he sent the Prince of Ying, A Jige, and the Prince of Gong, Gongaode, to attack Datong. On the day of Guichou, the commander Mengte captured Yishi. By the day of Yimao, Datong had been surrounded for a long time, and the people within the city were nearly all dead from starvation. Jiang Xiang's subordinate general Yang Zhenwei beheaded Jiang Xiang and his younger brother Jiang Lin and surrendered. On the day of Bingchen, the general Liu Wei of Ningwu surrendered with his troops, and the mountain strongholds of Jingle and Ninghua were all pacified. In this account, Jiang Xiang's rebellion in Datong in December, followed by his followers capturing Xinxian in the first month of the next year, and the bandits capturing nineteen prefectures and counties including Yancheng and Yulin in the third lunar month, all correspond to the previous divination's prediction of military movement in the Northwest, the certainty of occupying a city, and the outbreak of bandits along the borders. And by the time the siege of Datong had lasted for a long time in the seventh lunar month of the autumn, the city eventually fell due to internal strife and surrender, which also corresponds to the phrase "military failure in autumn leading to surrender."

Chapter 29: The Chapter on Military Strife, Part Six (Dinghai Day, Yin General, Zi Hour · Wuchang City)

The sixth example: In the year Jichou, during the third month, by chance I met with several friends who practiced the Six壬 system. They presented a divination chart cast on the day Dinghai, with the general Yin added to the hour Zi. They asked me to interpret it, saying that there were thieves attacking Wuchang and wanting to know the safety of the city. The pattern of this chart belongs to "Rechecking," and all three transmissions are yin branches, called "Extreme Yin." In this旬, the empty position is in Wu and Wei. The heavenly plate's Shen and You deities are exactly over the earth plate's Wu and Wei empty positions. The four lessons, from right to left, are: the day stem Ding is lodged in Wei, Wei has You, You has Hai, Hai has Chou, and Chou has Mao. The deities on the four lessons, You, Hai, Chou, and Mao, are successively accompanied by the nobleman, Tai Yin, Tai Chang, and Tian Kong. The first transmission is You accompanied by the nobleman, representing wife's wealth; the middle transmission is Hai accompanied by Tai Yin, representing official ghosts; the final transmission is Chou accompanied by Tai Chang, representing children.

The judgment says: Robbers are coming from the southwest, and the city will certainly be safe. Everyone asks: The wandering general is far away from the day stem and day branch, so how can you be certain the robbers will definitely come? I say: The nobleman is on酉 and initiates the transmission over the day stem, so I know the robbers will come, and they are coming from the southwest. Again they ask: How many robbers are there? I say: Since the wandering general is far from the day stem and day branch, and the nobleman on the day stem is empty, we can only estimate based on the two heavenly stems above and below the time, approximately six thousand three hundred. Again they ask: Why is it said the city will be safe? Because the nobleman is on the day stem but is being restrained, so it is concluded that the robbers will not attack the city and will retreat on their own.

This lesson originally took place during the reign of Emperor Jianwen of the Eastern Jin Dynasty, when Mao Bao's rebellious troops were stationed at Zhu City. The court ordered Dai Yang to divinate, and the result was later recorded in historical texts. I was initially unaware of this background, but to my surprise, my interpretation coincided with the ancient account. Let me add a few more points: this lesson is entirely composed of yin branches. The yin spirit above Zi has "Lu Du" which attacks the day stem, indicating that the enemy troops have set up ambushes. The day branch represents the city, and the spirit above it attacks it; furthermore, this spirit is itself attacked by the yin spirit, suggesting that the people defending the city do not practice benevolent governance and there will be internal conflicts. The final transmission generates and harmonises with the first transmission's nobleman, indicating that there are secret defectors within the city. These points are secrets not fully explained by previous scholars, and I am willing to include them in my book for future scholars to refer to.

Chapter 29: The Chapter on Military Struggles · Verification Seven (Jia Shen Fifth Month Geng Zi Day Xin Si Hour · Gao Jie Encircled Yangzhou)

The seventh example: In the year Jiashen, fifth lunar month, day Gengzi, hour Xinsi, General Gao Jie's army advanced from north of the Yellow River to the south, surrounding the city of Yangzhou for nearly two weeks. Li Richen, the county magistrate of Jiangdu, divined the safety of the city. This divination was set up with the general Shen added to the hour Xinsi. The lesson pattern belongs to "Hao Shi" and also includes the "San Jiao" pattern. In this旬, the empty position is in Chen and Xisi. The Heaven Plate's Shen and Wu deities are directly over the empty positions Chen and Xisi on the Earth Plate. The four lessons, from right to left, are: the day stem Geng is located in Shen, Shen has Hai, Hai has Yin, the day branch Zi has Mao, and Mao has Wu. The deities on the four lessons, Hai, Yin, Mao, and Wu, are respectively ridden by the Vermilion Bird, Heavenly Empress, Tai Yin, and White Tiger. The three transmissions are: the first transmission Wu ridden by White Tiger is the official ghost, the middle transmission You ridden by Gou Chen is the brother, and the final transmission Zi ridden by Teng Snake is the son.

The judgment says: Although it is凶, it will ultimately be safe, and the siege will be lifted within a few days. This is because the day stem and day branch are both in a weak and confined state, with the strong energy concentrated within the city. This divination forms a net pattern. The first transmission has Lu Du, White Tiger, and official ghost, which are aligned with the month builder. The enemy's forces are indeed fierce. However, the final transmission is a general star generated by You Du, which rides on Teng Snake to counterattack and control the first transmission. This is called using evil to control evil. The attack is merely a tiger's head and snake's tail, so the siege will be lifted within a few days.

The commentator cites the "History of the Ming Dynasty" as evidence: After the fall of Beijing, Gao Jie moved southward, and Fu Wang granted him the title of Xingping Marquis, placing him among the four armies in the Jiangbei region. He was given jurisdiction over Yangzhou, with his troops stationed outside the city. Gao Jie was determined to enter the city, but the people of Yangzhou feared him and refused to admit him. He then launched a fierce attack on the city, and every day he allowed his soldiers to plunder women from nearby villages, causing the people to become even more resentful. The prefect Ma Minglu and the official Tang Laihe held out for over a month. When Gao Jie realized he could not capture the city, his attacks eased slightly. Later, the grand secretary Shi Kefa mediated the situation, and they agreed to grant Gao Jie control over Guazhou, after which the matter was settled. In September, the court ordered Gao Jie to move his troops to Xuzhou and appointed Wei Yinfeng, a left middle allowance official, as a military affairs official to supervise his army's westward campaign.

The lesson pattern of Luo Wang is most suitable for divining about hunting or trapping thieves and searching for lost items. It is also auspicious when applied to military campaigns and warfare.

Chapter 29: The Chapter on Military Conflicts · Verification Eight (On the 3rd day of the third month in the year Jiashen, on the day Bingwu and the hour Jiawu · Zhending was surrounded)

Eighth example: On the day of Jiawu in the third lunar month of the year Jiashen, at the hour of Jiawu, Bian Meng Jing heard that Zhending was under siege and divined whether the city was secure. This divination was set up with the酉 general added to the hour of Wu, and the lesson pattern belongs to 'Knowing One,' combined with the 'Black Tortoise' pattern. In this旬, the empty position is in Yin and Mao. The Heaven Plate's Si and Wu deities are directly over the Earth Plate's Yin and Mao empty positions. The four lessons, from right to left, are: the day stem Bing is lodged in Si, with Si having Shen, Shen having Hai, the day branch Wu having You, and You having Zi. The deities on the four lessons, Shen, Hai, You, and Zi, are respectively riding on Liu He, Nobleman, Vermilion Bird, and Heavenly Empress. The three transmissions are: the first transmission Shen riding on Liu He as wife wealth, the middle transmission Hai riding on Nobleman as official ghost, and the final transmission Yin riding on Black Tortoise as parents.

The judgment says: Not only will Zhending be captured due to internal strife, but even Beijing will suffer another disaster. Because the first transmission is the wealth hexagram, which is fighting internally, and it is riding on the phase energy to clash and control the final transmission, which is in the旬空. The day stem and day branch are also attacked by two yin spirits, and the day branch further attacks the spirit on the day branch, indicating the people's hearts are scattered, and the army mutinies for money and grain. This is exactly the image of close ministers surrendering the city and killing the ruler. Moreover, the final transmission is寅, which represents Youyan, and it is attacked by the post-horse on the first transmission申. How can Beijing remain unharmed? On that day, the capital was also captured by rebels. More than a month later, the news came, and all my words were fulfilled.

Chapter 29: The Chapter on Military Strife · Verification Nine (Yiyou Fourth Month Xinyou Day Bingshen Hour · Left Liangyu's Southern Invasion)

Ninth example: In the year Yiyou, fourth lunar month, day Xinyou, hour Bingshen, Left Liangyu led his troops southward. General Tian Baiyuan, who was in charge of transporting grain, was ordered to raise an army to assist the emperor. The troops had already set out, and the soldiers asked for a divination on the auspiciousness of the situation. This divination was set up with the hour Xushen added to the general of You. The lesson pattern belongs to "re-examination," and the three transmissions are亥, 子, and 丑, progressing step by step, known as "progressive nourishment." In this ten-day period, the empty position is on Zi and Chou. The heaven plate's Chou and Yin deities are exactly covering the earth plate's Zi and Chou empty positions. The four lessons, from right to left, are: the day stem Xin is lodged in Xu, with Xu having Hai, Hai having Zi, and the day branch You having Xu, which again has Hai. The deities on the four lessons, Hai, Zi, Xu, and Hai, are successively occupied by White Tiger, Sky Void, Tai Chang, and White Tiger. The first transmission is Hai, occupied by White Tiger, representing the son; the middle transmission is Zi, occupied by Sky Void, still representing the son; the final transmission is Chou, occupied by Azure Dragon, representing the parents.

The judgment says: This campaign is not auspicious, and the main force will have to return halfway. The White Tiger and the Post-horse are both approaching the day stem. Although the opponent may appear powerful, the戌 earth in the lodging palace of the day stem can indeed restrain it. If it becomes reckless and acts boldly, it will encounter obstacles everywhere. However, our army's middle transmission and final transmission both fall into Kongwang, so how can we advance? Moreover, departing south on a辛 day directly confronts the旺 direction of the extinguished and hidden, which is unfavorable for military operations. The spirit of the day stem is located on the day branch, so there may be elite troops harassing from the front and pursuing from the back. Later, when the troops reached Yangzhou, Gao Jie's army rushed out of the city to seize boats, so they discussed with Shi Gebu and withdrew the troops.

Zuo Liangyu was born in 1598 and died in 1645. The commentator adds: whenever the first transmission is solid and the middle and final transmissions are all empty, regardless of whether the situation is declining, flourishing, advancing or retreating, it is treated as a vacuum. This indicates that matters will stop midway, and forcing forward will bring disaster. This is exactly what the "Bi Fa Fu" says: "When advancing meets an empty vacuum, it is advisable to retreat."

Chapter 29: The Chapter on Military Strife · Divination Verification Ten (Jichou Eleventh Month, Wuchen Day, Jiaxu Hour · Zezhou)

The tenth example: On the day of Jichou in the year of Wuchen, during the eleventh month, at the hour of Jiaxu, a person from Shanxi named Sihua Nan obtained this hour's divination and asked me whether there would be an incident in his hometown. This divination was set up with the寅 general added to the戌 hour. The lesson pattern belongs to 'Projectile'. The three transmissions are申, 子, and 辰, forming a water formation and belonging to 'Moistening Down'. In this旬, the empty position is on戌 and亥. The heaven plate's寅 and卯 deities are exactly over the earth plate's戌 and亥 empty positions. The four lessons, arranged from right to left, are: the day stem戊 is located in巳, with酉 on巳, 丑 on酉, and the day branch辰 has申 on it, with子 on申. The deities on the four lessons, 酉, 丑, 申, and 子, are respectively乘 by the Vermilion Bird, Tian Kong, Teng Snake, and Azure Dragon. The first transmission is子乘 by the Azure Dragon, representing wife's wealth; the middle transmission is辰乘 by the Black Tortoise, representing a peer; the final transmission is申乘 by the Teng Snake, representing a son.

The judgment says: How could this place be free of trouble? The dragon boat is riding on the Teng Snake over the day branch, indicating certain military disturbances. However, the people within the city can still form camps to defend themselves, with all provisions and weapons fully prepared. This is because the day branch is in harmony with its own deity, and the month builder's壬 is transformed into a wealth element. The first transmission is the zi element, representing northern troops that are swift and fierce, coming from the north. Fortunately, the middle transmission is the chen earth, like a mountain range blocking the way in the center, and the昴 star on the day stem is the day stem's declining element, causing the attacking forces to become fearful and retreat. The people in the city will eventually submit. The Azure Dragon transforming into the Teng Snake indicates that the incoming forces will not be a major threat. The three transmissions have three Heavenly Generals and the Liu He, and the final transmission generates and harmonises with the first transmission, meaning those defending the city will certainly submit. The Southern Master said: This is exactly my hometown, Zhezhou. Later, everything turned out exactly as predicted.

Chapter 29: The Chapter on Warfare and Strife · Verification 11 (Yiyou on the fifth month of Ethereal Ox, Yiyou day, Gengchen hour · Southern Capital Surrenders)

Example 11: In the year Yiyou, fifth lunar month, day Yiyou, hour Gengchen, I was taking shelter at Fuzhong Monastery. My allied deputy commander Yang Jiubao led the naval forces and went out with the main army. He wrote a letter inviting me to join him, but I refused because I was with my young son. I then cast a divination for him. This divination used the general Shēn (申) and the hour Chén (辰) to set up the chart. The lesson pattern belongs to "Original Leader" and also includes "Nine Disgraces." The three transmissions are Shēn, Zi, and Chén, forming a water pattern known as "Moistening Down." In this ten-day period, the empty position is in Wu and Wei. The heaven plate's Wu and Hai deities are directly over the earth plate's Wu and Wei empty positions. The four lessons, from right to left, are: the day stem Yi is lodged in Chén, Chén has Shēn, Shēn has Zi, the day branch You has Chou, Chou has Si. The deities on the four lessons, Shēn, Zi, Chou, and Si, are respectively mounted by Gou Chen, Nobleman, Heavenly Empress, and White Tiger. The first transmission Shēn, mounted by Gou Chen, is the official ghost; the middle transmission Zi, mounted by Nobleman, is the parent; the final transmission Chén, mounted by Tai Chang, is the wife's wealth.

The divination says: Nanjing will certainly surrender, so you may rest assured to proceed, but you should be cautious about disturbances in the southeast area. Because the final transmission is prosperous and strong, the wealth hexagram generates and harmonizes with the first transmission's official star nobleman, and the three transmissions form a water formation to nourish the day stem. There are no凶煞 in the harmonious formation, indicating that the person in charge will certainly surrender. Moreover, the day stem and day branch are weak and confined, with the prosperous energy concentrated within the city, so the city cannot be captured and there will be no massacre. However, the day branch's hidden spirit shows Taiyi Si and White Tiger, which combine to restrain the day branch You, so one should be cautious about disturbances in the southeast. Later events confirmed the prediction.

The commentator adds: This divination concerns the auspiciousness of military campaigns and travel. The three transmissions form a harmonious combination and relate to the day stem, with no kongwang, and the harmonious combination does not involve harmful stars, indicating a great auspicious omen. If these conditions are not met, even if the three transmissions relate to the day stem, there may still be other complications. The "Bi Fa Fu" mentions a pattern called "the nobleman of virtue resting on the body eliminates ten thousand calamities," which refers to the day virtue being added to the day stem, making it safe from the ghosts and killings in the three transmissions. However, this pattern can only be interpreted this way if all other aspects are favorable; otherwise, it should still be treated as an official ghost. In this case, the day virtue is located at Shen, which is on the day stem, and Shen is the current month general, benefiting people. The nobleman from the hidden spirit is yang and relates to the day stem, and the three transmissions are all life qi, so the conclusion is entirely auspicious.

The commentator also said: whenever predicting general fortune or misfortune, if the hidden heavenly stem of the day stem or day branch clashes and controls the day stem or day branch, it is often interpreted as internal disorder, and this method has been repeatedly verified. Here, the term "Nan Du" refers to the fact that during the Ming dynasty, Beijing was the capital and Jinling was the secondary capital, known as Nanjing. The same six ministries and nine卿 were established there, called the Nanjing six ministries and nine卿. In the Jiashen year, the Chongzhen emperor committed suicide by hanging himself, and the officials in Nanjing proclaimed the young Fu Wang as emperor, historically known as the Southern Ming. This divination was about the Qing army's southern advance. Yang Jiubao was ordered to assist the emperor, and the outcome of victory or defeat and life or death depended on this single move, so a divination was performed. "Nan Du" refers to the capital Nanjing of the Southern Ming dynasty. Later, the Southern Ming indeed surrendered. The Qing army fought a major battle with Shi Kefa in Yangzhou, but there were no battles elsewhere.

Chapter 29: The Chapter on Military Strife · Verification Twelve (Xinwei Fourth Month, Bingzi Day, Dingyou Hour · The Incident at Deng and Lai)

The twelfth example: On the day of Bingzi in the fourth lunar month of the year Xinwei, at the hour of Dingyou, Mr. Chi from Laiyang invited his fellow townsman, the Song brothers, to divinate whether the region of Shandong is safe. This divination is set with the hour of You as the general and added to the hour of You, making the heaven and earth plates completely overlapping. The lesson pattern belongs to "Hidden Chant," and also includes the pattern of "Black Tortoise's Embryo." In this旬, the empty position is in Shen and You. Because it is a Hidden Chant, the heaven plate's Shen and You are exactly on the earth plate's Shen and You empty positions. The four lessons, from right to left, are: the day stem, Jia, lodges in Si, and Si remains on Si, Si remains on Si, the day branch, Zi, remains on Zi, and Zi remains on Zi. The four heavenly spirits, Si, Si, Zi, Zi, are successively occupied by Gou Chen, Gou Chen, Xuanwu, and Xuanwu. The three transmissions are: the first transmission, Si with Gou Chen, representing a companion; the middle transmission, Shen with Teng Snake, representing wife's wealth; the final transmission, Yin with Baihu, representing parents.

The judgment states: In the region corresponding to the southeast direction, there is a hidden military force within the territory that rises in rebellion. Both armies suffer injuries in battle. The day stem has Gou Chen aligned with the month builder, but it is restrained by the black tortoise in the day branch, which transforms into a general. This is further compounded by the presence of the heavenly ghost, leading to the danger of hidden troops and generals destroying cities. The three transmissions and heavenly general are in successive mutual control, and within the hidden chant, there is the presence of the ding spirit and the post-horse. Officials should beware of being impeached, while common people will be displaced. In the month of winter when water is strong, the black tortoise takes command. Three generals, Kong Youde, Geng Zhongming, and Li Jiucheng, rise in rebellion, breaking through the seven prefectures and counties under the jurisdiction of Dengzhou. The people scatter everywhere, and the commander Zhang Keda commits suicide by hanging, while the governor Sun Yuanhua is arrested, charged, and executed.

The commentator says: Here, the three transmissions are successively mutually controlling, which should relate to a government official being impeached. As for the phrase "the common people flee," the commentator could not immediately see the corresponding omen and left it for later scholars to explain.

The commentator cites the "Ming History" to record this incident: In the first month of spring in the fifth year of Chongzhen, i.e., 1632, on the day of Xinchou, Kong Youde captured Dengzhou, and the游击 Chen Liangmo died in battle. The total commander Zhang Kadai also died heroically. The governor and vice-provincial governor Sun Yuanhua and Song Guanglan were captured, but soon afterwards were released. On the day of Xinhai, Kong Youde captured Huangxian. On the day of Bingyin, the total commander Yang Yutian and Wang Hong led troops to attack Kong Youde, but suffered defeat at Xincheng town. On the first day of the second month, on the day of Jisi, Kong Youde surrounded Laizhou, and the governor and vice-provincial governor Xu Congzhi defended the city. On the day of Xisi, Kong Youde captured Pingdu. On the day of Renyin in the third month, the minister of war Liu Yulie supervised military affairs in Shandong and went to attack Kong Youde. In the fourth month of summer, on the day of Jiaxu, Liu Yulie suffered defeat at Shaha River. On the day of Guiwei, Xu Congzhi died from an arrow wound. This series of battles corresponds exactly to the outcome predicted in the previous lesson, namely, soldiers and generals lying low and causing disorder, both armies fighting and suffering injuries, and the total commander committing suicide and the governor being imprisoned.

The Ming History continues to record: On the day of Guimao, Kong Youde feigned surrender, lured and captured the governor of Denghai, the imperial censor and inspector general Xie Lian, and Zhu Wannian, the magistrate of Laizhou, died bravely. On the day of Jiwei, Sun Yuanhua was executed and publicly displayed, and Liu Yulie was also arrested and imprisoned. On the day of Jiashen, Zhu Dadian led his troops to relieve Laizhou, and the vanguard general Zuo Kuan defeated the rebels at Shaha River. On the day of Yiyou, the siege of Laizhou was lifted. On the day of Guisi, the imperial army defeated Kong Youde greatly at Huangxian, and then encircled Dongszhou. By the day of Wuzi in the sixth year of Chongzhen, the general Chen Hongfan and others captured the water city of Dongszhou. On the day of Xinmao, Kong Youde fled by sea, and Shandong was finally pacified.

Chapter 29: The Chapter on Military Strife · Verification 13 (Jiashen Year, First Month, Dinghai Day, Jiyou Hour · The Capital Falls)

Thirteenth example: On the day of Dinghai in the first lunar month of the Jiashen year, at the hour of Jiyou, Cheng Xiangyun, living in Guangling, heard of military alarms and divined the fortune for the year. This divination was set with the Zi general added to the You hour, and the lesson pattern belongs to "Mao Star." The three transmissions are Yin, Wu, and Xu, forming a fire trinity and being "Inflaming Ascending." In this ten-day period, the empty position is in Wu and Wei. The heaven plate's Wu and Xu deities are exactly over the earth plate's empty positions of Wu and Wei. The four lessons, from right to left, are: the day stem Ding lodges in Wei, Wei has Xu, Xu has Chou, the day branch Hai has Yin, Yin has Si; the deities on the four lessons, Xu, Chou, Yin, and Si, respectively ride the Heavenly Empress, Tai Chang, White Tiger, and Gou Chen. The first transmission is Wu riding Liu He as a brother, the middle transmission is Xu riding Heavenly Empress as a son, and the final transmission is Yin riding White Tiger as an official seal.

Cheng Xiangyun judged that the tomb spirit was overturning and pressing upon the day stem, the white tiger and military symbol were facing the day branch, and the mourning-and-condolence spirit and the guest spirit had both entered the three transmissions. The final transmission further showed the annual punishment and the white tiger, which certainly indicated unexpected calamities such as military disaster and loss of life. The Gou Chen and You Du fell into theYin Spirit of the day branch, that is, the area of Youyan, and also saw the death deity and the阴煞, so military conflict was inevitable. Moreover, both the day stem and day branch were riding on the spirit of losing strength, resulting in emptiness inside and out; the You Du on theYin Spirit of the day branch was punishing the sovereign, which was unfavorable to the king; theYin Spirit of the day stem was punishing the day branch, indicating a military mutiny in the northwest; and the day branch was also punishing its ownYin Spirit, meaning the border generals and civilians in the eastern part of the city would certainly become disunited. Later, the enemy troops indeed invaded Beijing, and an internal rebellion occurred in the city, leading to the great disaster on the nineteenth day of the third lunar month.

Thirty-third Chapter of Triple Harmony

The subtlety of Triple Harmony is rarely truly understood by people. Each of the Five Phases forms its own Triple Harmony Formation, and the messages conveyed by each are different. For the Metal Formation "From Reform," one must observe whether it is still or moving, whether it is proceeding in the right direction or the opposite. For the Wood Formation "Flexibility and Straightness," one must distinguish whether it represents benevolence or cruelty, and also consider its current strength and decline. For the Fire Formation "Ascending Heat," even though it may be in a favorable position, its power cannot last long. For the Water Formation "Moistening Down," it is actually suitable for those in a lower position. For the Earth Formation, one must not simply assume it represents stillness; there is also a period of annual inspection involved. If the Triple Harmony deities are scattered in different directions and cannot come together, even if one tries to promote matters, they will ultimately be delayed. It also reminds that in the method of interpreting the Three Transmissions, Triple Harmony is only one aspect among many; interpreting the lesson still requires careful examination of the Initiating Transmission and the Four Lessons and Three Transmissions, just like other lesson patterns. As shown in the examples in the previous chapters, one should analyze the Three Transmissions separately and in layers; this is the correct method, and it must be remembered.

Thirtyrd Chapter of Triple Harmony: First Example of Divination (Jimao Year, Yin Month, Guisi Day, Xu Hour)

The first example: In the year of Jimao, month of Yin, day of Guisi, hour of Xu, Wu Xueliang, who was setting up a divination stall in Weifang, asked what would happen today. The lesson pattern belongs to "Original Leader." The three transmissions, which are Si, Chou, and You, form a metal formation, thus being "From Reform." The note under the title "Incorrect Lesson, Correct Interpretation" indicates that this lesson was cast incorrectly but interpreted correctly. The heaven plate is four positions behind the earth plate, equivalent to using the hour of Wu as the starting point for the hour of Xu. The month of Yin should use the general of Hai. The four lessons, from right to left, are: the day stem Gui lodges in Chou, Chou has You, You has Si, the day branch Si has Chou, and Chou still has You. The four heavenly spirits You, Si, Chou, and You are successively occupied by Tai Yin, Tian Kong, Zhu Que, and Tai Yin. The three transmissions are: the first transmission Si, occupied by Tian Kong, representing wife wealth; the middle transmission Chou, occupied by Zhu Que, representing official ghosts; and the final transmission You, occupied by Tai Yin, representing parents.

The judgment says: The three transmissions form a harmonious combination, indicating there will certainly be an event involving a gathering today. The divination also forms a circular pattern, suggesting that there will be a lot of traveling today. The three transmissions successively generate the day stem, but the final transmission forms a self-punishment with the day stem's heavenly stem. The "Bi Fa Fu" states "harmony with a harmful star, sweet with poison." The Tai Yin represents a woman, the first transmission's Tian Kong indicates an empty door or empty words, and the middle transmission's official ghost riding the Vermilion Bird indicates disputes over speech. Therefore, there will certainly be a dispute with a woman regarding the act of divination.

The situation that came true was that on that day he went to Weifang, discussed some principles of Plum Blossom Numerology with several fellow enthusiasts, and then walked back and forth several times around different locations where fortune tellers set up their stalls. At the time of Si, a woman came, expressing doubt and stating that she would not pay if the divination was inaccurate. The two had an argument over this. However, the day's financial fortune was still quite good.

Volume Four: A Guide to the Great Six壬 Divine Omens and Portents

This is an explanation of the complete diagram of divine omens. Whenever one examines divine omens, they must wait until they are in conflict or interaction with the day stem, day branch, and heavenly general, before the matters they represent can manifest. The upper circular diagram is arranged as follows: the first layer starts with the year's sovereign, the second layer starts with the year's journey, and the remaining omens are listed vertically beside them, completing the group of year-related omens. The third layer starts with the assistant deity, and the fourth layer starts with the extraordinary deity, completing the group of旬-related omens. The lower circular diagram is arranged as follows: the first layer starts with Heavenly Joy, the second layer starts with the month builder, the third layer starts with the monthly conjunction, the fourth layer starts with the monthly journey, the fifth layer starts with the formed deity, the sixth layer starts with Heavenly Horse, and the seventh layer starts with Sacred Heart. The remaining omens are listed on the right side, completing the group of monthly omens related to the month's ruler. As for the various omens derived from the heavenly stems and earthly branches, they are arranged separately in the square diagram.

"Heavenly Harmony" appears only in alternating months, following the order: Ren, Ding, Bing, Ji, Wu, Xin, Geng, Yi. "Monthly Virtue" cycles every four months, following the order: Bing, Jia, Ren, Geng, and repeats three times in a year; "Monthly Harmony" pairs with it, following the order: Xin, Ji, Ding, Yi, and also repeats three times in a year. "Heavenly Relief" is not listed in this table and must be consulted in the circular diagram. "Earthly Relief" starts from the first month and follows the order: Shen, Shen, You, You, Xu, Xu, Hai, Hai, Wu, Wu, Wei, Wei. "Relief Deity" follows the order: Shen, Shen, Xu, Xu, Zi, Zi, Yin, Yin, Chen, Chen, Wu, Wu. "Imperial Grace" follows the order: Xu, Chou, Chen, Wei, You, Mao, Zi, Wu, Yin, Si, Shen, Hai. "Great Virtue" changes every three months, following the order: Wu, Chen, Zi, Yin, in four segments. "Wandering Deity" follows the order: Chou, Zi, Hai, Xu, in four segments. "Amusement Deity" follows the order: Si, Zi, You, Chen, in four segments, each segment governing three months.

The Day Stem Deities and Auspicious/Inauspicious Forces Table (Continued)

This column continues from the previous table, arranging the ten 'Day Stems' in order: Jia, Yi, Bing, Ding, Wu, Ji, Geng, Xin, Ren, Gui. The items of Day Ghost, Day Tomb, Day Crime, and Day Opposition do not require separate annotations of the Earthly Branches, as they are derived according to general principles: Day Ghost is determined by the stem being overcome, Day Tomb by the Five Phases entering the repository, Day Crime by Earthly Branches conflicting, and Day Opposition by Earthly Branches opposing. 'Flying Symbol' starts from Jia and moves backwards to Si, then turns back to Wu on Ji and moves forward. Yangren, Flying Blade, You Du, and Lu Du each have their own starting rules, which will be explained in the following verse. The items of Day Thief, Day Robber, and Day Criminal are shared among the pairs of Jia and Ji, Yi and Geng, Bing and Xin, Ding and Ren, Wu and Gui, so the ten Day Stems only show five instances each. Day Immorality is shared between the pairs of Jia and Yi, Bing and Ding, Wu and Ji, Geng and Xin, and Ren and Gui.
