The first row is the header, listing the twelve Earthly Branches in order: Zi, Chou, Yin, Mao, Chen, Si, Wu, Wei, Shen, You, Xu, Hai. Each subsequent row reads the Day Branch in the same order. "Branch Virtue" starts from Zi and proceeds through Si, cycling through the Earthly Branches. The rows for "Six Harmonies" and "Triple Harmony" are damaged, leaving only three characters and blank spaces, which must be completed according to the established examples, such as Zi and Chou harmonizing, Yin and Hai harmonizing, and the Water triad Shen-Zi-Chen, Wood triad Hai-Mao-Wei. "Branch Authority" starts from Zi and proceeds to Wu, then reverses back to Wei and continues forward. "Branch Destruction" indicates the branch that the Day Branch destroys. "Fragmentation" uses only the characters Si, Chou, and You, rotating through the three groups of Meng, Zhong, Ji.

The six harms, three punishments, branch conflict, branch ghost, and branch tomb are not listed separately with the earthly branches. Each is calculated according to the rules of penetrating harm, mutual punishment, mutual conflict, overcoming me, and entering the tomb. The Death Deity starts from Zi and moves forward twelve positions in order through Mao. The Bingfu starts from Zi and moves forward twelve positions in order through Hai. Both are associated with illness and death. The Hook God and the Rope God move in opposite directions, forming pairs called Hook and Rope, and they are specifically related to incidents involving ropes and hanging. The last mentioned Post-horse, which governs movement and travel, as well as Huagai, Jiesha, Zaisha, and Xianchi, are calculated in the same way as the annual and monthly evils, as explained in the previous text. Therefore, the earthly branches are not repeated here.

The "Four Evils" use only the four storage positions: Chen, Wei, Xu, and You, cycling every three branches. "Branch Death" refers to the Wangshen of the Day Branch, which is taken from Yin, Shen, Si, and Hai, movingretrograde every three branches. The three lines "Thunder and Lightning," "Rain God," and "Clear Weather" are specifically used for divining weather conditions: "Thunder and Lightning" takes the storage positions of the four seasons along with Yin and Mao, "Rain God" starts from Zi and moves forward to Shen, and "Clear Weather" starts from Zi and moves forward to Wu. If these lines receive prosperous and strong energy, they indicate thunderstorms or clear weather. The last line "White Robe Imperial Scholar" starts from Zi and moves backward to You, using alternate positions, indicating auspicious stars related to literary achievements and official rank.
Annual Malevolent Influence
This verse mentions four annual deities: the Year God, the Sun God, the Pursuer of Evil Spirits, and the Mourning-and-Condolence spirit. The Year God represents the authority of the emperor, overseeing state affairs and matters within the current year, with fortune and misfortune manifesting within that year. The Sun God is the supreme deity; when scholars encounter it, they gain power and prestige, achieving success and honor. It also serves as the Azure Dragon, one of the Twelve Heavenly Generals associated with wealth and joy, bringing good fortune and no worries. However, it also functions as the Pursuer of Evil Spirits; if it harms the Day Stem or Day Branch, it indicates death in the mouth of the person, and the decline of family fortune. The Mourning-and-Condolence spirit is associated with death and mourning, and it is most inauspicious to encounter it when divining about illness.
These two lines of rhyme mention the six positions of Liu He, Guanfu, Xiao Hao, Sui Po, Sui Mu, and Bai Hu. Liu He, one of the Twelve Heavenly Generals, signifies harmony and gathering, indicating that matters will succeed without failure. Guanfu signifies legal involvement. Xiao Hao signifies loss of wealth and is also called Sui Zhai. When used in divination for the home, it is especially important. If it shares the same position as the ghost爻, it indicates illness and lawsuits. Sui Po is the position opposing the Tai Sui, representing a high-ranking official in charge, and it also governs matters within half a year. It is also called Da Hao and signifies loss of wealth. If it harms the day stem or day branch, it indicates death and family ruin. Sui Mu signifies tombs, illness, lawsuits, and home disasters. It also functions as Long De. If it is combined with auspicious deities and generals that support the day stem and day branch, then official matters will proceed smoothly. Conversely, if it is combined with inauspicious ones, all affairs will be difficult. It also functions as Bai Hu, which signifies disasters, bloodshed, and fear. Therefore, it also indicates disasters, bloodshed, and fear.
These two lines mentionFortune Virtue, 吊客, Tai Yin, Bingfu, The Post-horse, 六害, Huagai, and 黄幡. "Favor and Virtue" refers to the nobleman before the year, indicating rescue in times of danger. "Funeral Guest" relates to mourning and marital relations; if it appears in the first transmission (the first of the three transmissions), it indicates disaster for close relatives; if it appears in the middle or final transmission, it indicates mourning for distant relatives. It also functions as "Tai Yin" (the heavenly general governing hidden affairs), and when it is a favorable deity, it is auspicious to reside in its direction; when it is an inauspicious deity, it indicates secret plots and disputes. "Bingfu" relates to illness and also to old matters from last year. "Yi Ma" indicates movement and travel, "Liu Hai" indicates obstacles in all affairs, "Huagai" indicates confusion and lack of clarity in doing things, and "Huang Pan" is used in divination related to military affairs.
These two sentences first mention the three evil stars: Jiesha, Zaisha, and Tiansha, which cause calamity very quickly, and are undesirable in any divination. Then they mention the two other stars: Disha and Xianchi Taohua, and Baowei. Jiesha, Zaisha, and Tiansha are particularly harmful, and are not favored in any divination. Disha and Taohua are also generally avoided in divination, but Baowei is favorable when determining directions. Wangshen indicates illness and lawsuits, and its presence is very ominous. Jiangxing is specifically used for divination related to military affairs. Pan'an is a favorable star for marriage. All these stars mentioned in the above two paragraphs are included in the circular diagram listed earlier.
This song explains how to determine the four deities of the years: "Tian Ting" is the next position after the stem of the grand official; "Si Fu" follows the order of Shen, Hai, Yin, Si, and Chen in sequence; "Sui Xing" is the branch that is harmed by the grand official; "Da General" begins at You in the years of Hai, Zi, and Chou, and then proceeds in order. Tian Ting governs matters concerning the court, Si Fu indicates illness and often signifies danger, Sui Xing relates to official disputes and legal responsibilities, and Da General represents the leader in charge of military affairs, who holds power of life and death. When inquiring about the news of a traveler, it is also used. These four are all included in the diagram mentioned earlier.
Month Sha
The following is divided according to the four seasons: spring, summer, autumn, and winter. The first line shows the position of Heavenly Joy and Heavenly Ear, which move in order through the four seasons: in autumn for spring, in the ox for summer, in the dragon for autumn, and in the goat for winter. Heavenly Joy signifies joy, favor, promotion, and gain; Heavenly Ear signifies information gathering and pursuit and capture. The second line shows the positions for spring in the pig, summer in the tiger, autumn in the snake, and winter in the monkey. The third line shows the positions for spring in the rat, summer in the rabbit, autumn in the horse, and winter in the rooster. The two evils, Returning Soul and Knife砧, fall on the same positions in these two lines: Returning Soul signifies the recovery of the sick, while Knife砧 is something to avoid for livestock. The fourth line shows the positions for spring in the ox, summer in the dragon, autumn in the goat, and winter in the dog. These positions include the four terms: Guasu, Sanqiu, Guanshen, and Guanshen. Guasu signifies false messages, mixed feelings of joy and sorrow, difficulty in finding lost items, and is something to avoid for marriage. Sanqiu signifies the collapse of graves and dangerous illness. Guanshen signifies disaster and obstruction at the place where it is activated. Guanshen signifies involvement in lawsuits and being imprisoned.
There is another method for calculating isolation and loneliness: using the 'ten-day emptiness' (the two earthly branches not included in the ten heavenly stems of the current ten-day period). A yang branch falling into emptiness is called isolation, and a yin branch falling into emptiness is called loneliness. If a yang empty branch becomes the first transmission (initial transmission), it is called an isolation lesson; if a yin empty branch becomes the first transmission, it is called a loneliness lesson. If both isolation and loneliness are present, it is called an isolation and loneliness lesson. In the fifth row, for spring it is寅 (Yin), for summer it is巳 (Si), for autumn it is申 (Shen), and for winter it is亥 (Hai). These positions are associated with the three deities: 'Imperial Book', 'War Hero', and 'Official God'. 'Imperial Book' signifies receiving a mandate and achieving fame and success; it is especially favored by those involved in legal matters. 'War Hero' signifies victory in battle. 'Official God' is in the same position as a favorable deity, indicating good fortune. However, if it is in the same position as Zhu Que (Vermilion Bird), Gou Chen (Hook Star), or Teng Snake (Teng Snake), it indicates a swift pursuit or summons. The position of 'Imperial Book' is often referred to as 'Imperial Edict' in the divination examples in Volume Four of 'Six Rats Guide'. It belongs to the seasonal evils and is not the same as the heavenly edict in the monthly evil, which starts from亥 (Hai) in the first month and proceeds in order through the twelve positions.
In the sixth line, the positions of Spring卯, Summer午, Autumn酉, and Winter子 are occupied by the thief god, the thief and bandit, the turning evil, and the silk and hemp evil. The thief god and the thief and bandit indicate matters of secret dealings and theft. If this position is connected to the current ruling heavenly stem, it is called heaven turning, meaning in Spring it isYimao, in Summer it isBingwu, in Autumn it isXinyou, and in Winter it isRenzi. If it is connected to the current ruling nayin sound element, it is called earth turning, meaning in Spring it isXinmao, in Summer it isWuwu, in Autumn it isGuiyou, and in Winter it isBingzi. When both heaven turning and earth turning occur, all affairs are ominous, except for travel, which is very auspicious. Even a gentleman going to court to pay homage is without harm. The silk and hemp evil indicates incidents involving ropes and hanging.
In the seventh line, Spring corresponds to Chen, Summer to Wei, Autumn to Xu, and Winter to Chou. These positions are associated with the terms "Yupen," "Tianmu," and "Longshen." "Yupen" signifies falling into water; it is inauspicious for drowning but auspicious for childbirth. It is unfavorable when located on the "Earth Plate" (the fixed twelve branches directions) in the directions of Hai or Zi, and unfavorable on the "Heaven Plate" (the moving twelve branches according to the month general) when accompanied by Chen. If these conditions are violated, it indicates illness or death of children. "Tianmu" signifies ghosts and spirits causing disturbances, and is suitable for use in capturing thieves or searching for people. "Longshen" is used for examining land ridges. When predicting the condition of a house, if "Tianmu" falls on the "Day Branch," there is likely to be ghosts or spirits in the house. Here is an example.
On the day of Xinsi, a divination was made regarding the younger brother committing a wrongdoing.
This is a divination case for the noon hour of November 30, 1998: Li Mou came to inquire whether his brother's possession and talking nonsense were due to feng shui. At that time, the month general was寅 (Yin), which is the star position where the sun was located in that month. The class was cast at noon, and the day branch was Xinsi (Xinsi). The following three lines are the three transmissions: the first transmission was 午 (Wu) with the nobleman (Tianyi, the first of the twelve heavenly generals), the middle transmission was 寅 (Yin) with Gou Chen (a heavenly general associated with conflict and entanglement), and the final transmission was 戌 (Xu) with Tai Chang (a heavenly general associated with food, clothing, and entertainment). The following three lines are the four lessons, read from right to left: the day stem 辛 (Xin) had 午 (Wu) with the nobleman, 午 (Wu) had 寅 (Yin) with Gou Chen, the day branch 巳 (Si) had 丑 (Chou) with Qinglong (Azure Dragon), and 丑 (Chou) had 酉 (You) with Xuanwu (Black Tortoise, a heavenly general associated with thieves and secret matters). The last four lines are the earth plate, the twelve earthly branches arranged clockwise starting from 丑 (Chou), 寅 (Yin), 卯 (Mao), 辰 (Chen).
The divination says: The first transmission is on the position of Wu, and the nobleman riding on it is originally Tianyi, representing deities; now the nobleman is in the position of hell, becoming an improper deity. The entire divination forms the image of the heavenly net, indicating being entangled and unable to escape. The day branch receives the heavenly eye and is also the tomb deity; its hidden deity sees Congkui in You, accompanied by the Black Tortoise, indicating that a woman's corpse is causing trouble. The person present said: Two years ago, during the breaking of ground, some bones were found and were buried in a graveyard. The diviner said: Perhaps it was due to improper handling of the relocation of the remains. Please have a priest perform a ritual to appease the spirits, and then everything will be safe. The person nodded repeatedly and left.
Later research into various texts on the Ren school revealed that this divination lesson is also known as "ghost call."the so-called "ghost call" refers to the branch that is overcome by the Heaven Plate, which is considered the "ghost," precisely falling upon the Earth Plate's storage position. If the spiritual general at the "year position" (determined by age) is also fierce and malevolent, the prediction becomes more accurate. When the ghost falls into the storage position, it is as if the ghost gains control of the Earth Plate, attracting like-minded beings and gathering companions, hence the term "ghost call." Those who receive this divination lesson, even if they are strong and healthy, will surely fall ill, and the illness is definitely caused by supernatural forces. The matter is mostly due to someone secretly harming them, and they may even be implicated and imprisoned.
Eighth line: Spring巳, Summer申, Autumn寅, Winter亥, the four positions are 喝散 (He San), Guchen (Guchen), 梁神 (Liang Shen), and 钥神 (Yue Shen). He San governs the resolution of lawsuits and the accomplishment of desired matters; Guchen is interpreted in the same way as Guasu mentioned earlier. Liang Shen governs obstacles in travel; Yue Shen governs release from imprisonment. Ninth line: Spring午, Summer酉, Autumn子, Winter卯, the position falls on Fire Ghost. If it is ridden by Teng Snake (a heavenly general governing fear and strange occurrences) or Zhu Que (the Vermilion Bird), and it harms the day branch, it indicates a calamity of fire. Tenth line: Spring未, Summer戌, Autumn丑, Winter辰, the three positions are 哭神 (Ku Shen), Five Tombs (Wu Mu), and 地狱 (Di Yu). If Ku Shen is occupied by Bai Hu (White Tiger), it indicates crying; if it falls on亥 or 子, it is called Ku Shen shedding tears, which is extremely凶 (dangerous). Wu Mu governs the collapse of tombs and danger in illness. Di Yu, when occupying the same position as Zhu Que and Gou Chen, indicates imprisonment and detention.
The eleventh row includes Spring酉, Summer亥, Autumn寅, and Winter巳, which are associated with evil spirits, depletion of energy, and defeat in battle. Evil spirits and depletion of energy indicate illness and misfortune, while defeat in battle suggests failure in conflict. The twelfth row includes Spring酉, Summer子, Autumn卯, and Winter午, which are associated with the Four Wastes and the丧车. The Four Wastes signify failure in all endeavors. If the丧车 harms the day stem, it indicates the death of the patient. The entire set of seasonal evils starts from the stem corresponding to the first month and proceeds in order.
Month Sha starts at寅 and proceeds in sequence through the twelve earthly branches.
This group starts from the first month with the position of寅, proceeding through the twelve earthly branches in order. The position of寅 has the month builder, minor hour evil, azure dragon, tiger, and wood evil. The month builder governs the fortune and misfortune within a month, and its effects are verified within that month. The minor hour evil indicates obstruction in matters, which is especially to be avoided in military operations. If it is combined with the teng snake, it indicates fear and alarm; if combined with the azure dragon, it becomes the azure dragon evil, which instead indicates good fortune. The tiger indicates harm from wolves and tigers. The wood evil indicates trees becoming monstrous. The position of卯 has the azure dragon, wandering spirit, and grass evil. The azure dragon is favorable for seeking wealth, fame, and official rank. The wandering spirit is inauspicious for travel; if it enters the transmission or is added to the person's birth year, it indicates movement or travel. If this position is combined with the teng snake, it is called grass evil.

At the position of the Snake (巳), there are厄煞, 孝杖, death deity, lightning spirit, and fire candle: 厄煞 indicates family losses; 孝杖 is unfavorable if the grandson's element falls within the three transmissions; the death deity indicates a凶 when related to illness, and if it shares the position with the White Tiger, it is called White Tiger Stalking Corpse, which is extremely凶; the lightning spirit indicates lightning; if this position is occupied by the Vermilion Bird, it is called Black Spirit; if fire candle shares the position with Teng Snake and Vermilion Bird and harms the day stem, it indicates the person himself will suffer disaster; if it harms the day branch, it indicates the house will be burned down by fire.
At the position of Wu there are death qi, guanfu, mourning clothes, false speech, and flower calamity: death qi is most inauspicious for illness and childbirth; guanfu indicates legal disputes; mourning clothes indicate there is a death in the family; false speech, if occurring at the same position as Tian Kong (a heavenly general indicating falsehood and unreliability), means what is said is not trustworthy; if this position is occupied by Zhu Que (the Vermilion Bird), it is called flower calamity. At the position of Wei there are well calamity, withered calamity, great and minor loss, heavenly seal, heavenly sheep, and the god of fortune: well calamity, when occurring together with Bai Hu (the White Tiger) and Congkui (You), indicates falling into a well; withered calamity indicates illness is dangerous and affairs are unfavorable; great and minor loss are most inauspicious for opening the treasury to seek wealth; if they are added to the domestic yao or occur together with the tomb god in the initiating transmission, all affairs will go wrong; heavenly seal is favorable for seeking official positions; heavenly sheep is used to indicate sheep; the god of fortune indicates good fortune.
The position of Shen has the month breaker, military evil, white tiger evil, great loss, road spirit, and entanglement: The month breaker indicates destruction and separation, which can resolve grievances and worries, but it is unfavorable for joyful matters. In matters of childbirth, it is easy to give birth, but for marriage it is inauspicious. The military evil indicates conflicts involving weapons. If this position is occupied by the white tiger, it becomes the white tiger evil and indicates danger. The great loss is explained earlier. The road spirit indicates matters related to roads. If a yang year is involved, it becomes entanglement, indicating illness and legal disputes that are complicated. The position of You has messages, heavenly wisdom, and heavenly money: Messages and the vermilion bird are in the same position, indicating messages arriving. If it is near the entrance and shares the position with the nobleman, it indicates news. Heavenly wisdom indicates disputes and gossip. Heavenly money indicates money becoming strange or the accumulation of wealth.

On the position of Xu, there are Tian Shu (Heavenly Book), Yuan Shen (Wish God), and Di Yi (Earthly Physician): Tian Shu signifies promotion and good fortune in wealth; Yuan Shen relates to illness, indicating that a wish has not yet been fulfilled; Di Yi, like Tian Yi, is used when dealing with illness. On the position of Hai, there are Fei Hun (Flying Soul), Fu Yang (Hidden Harm), Tian Zhao (Heavenly Decree), Bing Sha (Illness Demon), and Er Sha (Child Demon): Fei Hun, when it is on the person's birth year or on the day branch, forms a Fei Hun hexagram, indicating restlessness of the mind, frequent bad dreams at night, and disturbances by ghosts; Fu Yang is to be avoided in any divination; Tian Zhao, if it is in the same position as Liu He (Six Harmonies) and Tian Hou (Heavenly Empress), signifies receiving grace; Bing Sha should not appear with Mu Shen (Ancestral Spirit) or Bai Hu (White Tiger); Er Sha indicates misfortune for children. On the position of Zi, there are Sheng Qi (Life Qi) and Yu Sha (Rain Demon): Sheng Qi can dispel evil and bring good fortune, and can lead to new achievements; if it is accompanied by Tian Hou or Liu He, it indicates pregnancy; if it is accompanied by Qing Long (Azure Dragon), it signifies wealth and marriage; Yu Sha, if it is in a position of prosperity and strength, indicates rain. Since rain and moisture nurture all things, it is often found with Sheng Qi in the same position. The following is an example.
On a Dingwei day, divination was made to determine whether it would be sunny or rainy.
This is a divination case from January 5th, 1998, at the hour of Xu. The question was about the weather, as the eldest daughter was to return to her mother's home the next day. The divination was cast with Chou as the month general, and the hour of Xu. The day stem was Ding, and the day branch was Wei. The three transmissions followed in order: Hai with Tai Yin, Xu with Tian Hou, and Xu with Tian Hou again. The four lessons, read from right to left, were: above the day stem Ding, there was Xu with Tian Hou; above Xu, there was Chou with Tai Chang; above the day branch Wei, there was again Xu with Tian Hou; and above Xu, there was again Chou with Tai Chang. The heavenly stems and spirits were the same, so the four lessons actually formed only two. The last four lines were still the layout of the earth plate with the twelve earthly branches.
The interpretation states: The first transmission is on the亥 position with Tai Yin, and亥 belongs to water. Moreover, it is exactly the position of the rain god for this month, so it indicates snowfall. However, the middle and final transmissions both fall on the戌 earth position, and earth can control water, showing that the snow will not last long. The fulfillment occurs at the hour of丑. Because at the hour of丑, the Heaven Plate's辰 is opposed by the Earth Plate's戌, releasing the trapped water vapor. Later, it indeed came true.
On the Chou position there are five ominous influences: Blood Branch, Heaven Pit, Buddha Evil, Heaven Ox, and Grave. Blood Branch indicates disasters involving bleeding and difficulties in childbirth and pregnancy; when predicting illness, it is inauspicious to use acupuncture. Heaven Pit is inauspicious for travel; if it occurs, it indicates damage to livestock and vehicle wheels. Buddha Evil relates to matters concerning Buddha images. Heaven Ox, if combined with the Six Favorable position, indicates illness in cattle. Grave, if combined with the dwelling爻, indicates that there are unburied corpses in the family.
