The month general for the month of April is the metal element associated with the sign Shen. After the festival of Xiaoman, the sun is located in the area of Shi Shen, hence Shen is the month general for the fourth month.

The term "transmission" refers to the period in April when all things are flourishing, and the yang energy has reached its peak and is about to recede, while a thread of yin energy is just beginning to arise. This position transmits the yin energy and sends away the yang energy, hence it is called transmission.

The appearance of this deity is characterized by a short neck, round eyes, sparse beard and hair, and a tall stature, corresponding to the image of a messenger traveling between places in ancient times.

The Heavenly Stem Geng resides in the branch Shen. Water is born in Shen, so Geng is associated with the growth of water. It represents the Heavenly General "White Tiger" in the Twelve Heavenly Generals. It corresponds to the musical note Zheng, has a number of seven, and a taste of辛 (pungent). It corresponds to the mansions Zi Su and Can Su in the Twenty-Eight Mansions. Its animal forms are monkey, ape, and猱. Its twelve palaces are the Yin and Yang Palace, also known as the dual palace. Its territorial division corresponds to the regions of Jin and Yizhou. Its zodiac sign is monkey, and its direction is southwest.

It governs matters concerning roads and travel, diseases and calamities, as well as messages and communications.

According to classification of symbolic meanings, Shen is considered the "Tianqian Star," and can also be interpreted as Tian鬼 (Tian Ghost) or Tianyi (Tian Medicine).

When the trigram of Shen is added to the Triple Harmony, it signifies the chief of the court of justice and the general; in ordinary cases, it represents travelers, officials, common people, mourning sons, and soldiers on campaign (if added to Zi or Wu, it also indicates soldiers fleeing); it also represents soldiers stationed at relay stations. When it is White Tiger, it signifies hunters; also, it represents silversmiths and blacksmiths. When it is Azure Dragon and added to the four beginning trigrams, it signifies the maternal uncle and monks; also, it represents merchants. When it is Liu He, it signifies witches and physicians; also, it represents butchers.

In matters of events, the position of Shen (Metal) indicates childbirth and nursing. When it is placed over the position of Hai (Water), it is said to overcome the day stem, indicating a danger of drowning. It also signifies enemies and adversaries. When it is used as Gou Chen, it indicates attacks and plunder. It also signifies gifts and offerings. When it is used as Xuan Wu and placed over the positions of Hai or Zi (Water), it indicates loss and escape. On days of Ren or Gui (Water), it indicates licentiousness.

In terms of locations, Shen governs temples, monasteries, prayer halls, city walls and buildings, roads, ponds and lakes, tombs, ancestral mausoleums, and停放的灵柩.

In terms of surnames, the branch Shen includes the surnames Yuan, Guo, Shen, Jin, Hou, Han, and Deng. Generally, any surname with a character that has the radical for metal or a character that resembles the radical for walking or movement is categorized under this group.

The song says: When the transmission arrives at Shen and rides the White Tiger, it indicates warfare and weapons; when it rides the Tai Chang, it signifies physicians or monks. On Ji day, if it rides the Gou Chen, it causes injury to the day's virtue and indicates disputes and enmity; when it rides the Azure Dragon, it relates to roads; when it rides the Nobleman, it refers to taxes; when it rides the Heavenly Empress, it indicates lakes and ponds. When it rides the Tai Yin and the energy is prosperous and strong, it signifies barley; when the energy is in captivity or decline, it indicates defending the city. When it rides the Teng Snake, it relates to funerals; when it rides the Tian Kong, it refers to mortars and grinding stones; when it rides the Liu He, it signifies market trading; when it rides the劫杀 and the Black Tortoise, it indicates plunder and attack; when it rides the Vermilion Bird, it refers to hunters.

The explanation states that the White Tiger causing harm on the Shen (猴) position signifies a calamity involving weapons. This has five reasons. On a Jia day, the Azure Dragon is in charge, and the White Tiger causes injury due to a dispute over wealth; if the dead star is also present, it becomes even more dangerous, which is a case of metal and wood conflicting, leading to bloodshed. On a Wu day, the Gou Chen is in charge, and metal and earth generate each other without conflict, so even if evil stars are present, it is not dangerous. On a Geng day, the White Tiger itself is in charge, and the White Tiger holds virtue on that day; even if there is conflict involving weapons, it does not harm people, but instead is favorable for meeting important officials, symbolizing the punishment of the unjust. On a Ren day, the Heavenly Empress is in charge, indicating injury caused by immorality. On a Gui day, the Black Tortoise is in charge, indicating injury caused by thieves—these two are not considered dangerous.

Transmission of the Messenger is occupied by Tai Chang, indicating matters related to physicians and monks. On six Ji days, Gou Chen is located on the Transmission of the Messenger, indicating disputes and conflicts between enemies and rivals, because the virtue of Ji day is in Jia wood, and Gou Chen occupies Shen metal, which remotely harms the virtue of Jia wood.

There are five interpretations regarding the concept of 'road'. On the days of Jia, Wu, and Geng, when they are in the position of Shen, the Azure Dragon is present. On Jia day, the main focus is on wealth, with gains coming from the road or distant letters. On Wu day, the main focus is on servants and official documents arriving from the road. On Geng day, the main focus is on illness and mourning events coming from the road. On Ren day, if the hexagram shows the triple harmony of Shen, Zi, and Chen forming a water pattern, or if the special lesson includes the evil spirit and the initiating transmission, it indicates that immoral behavior by women will be exposed on the road. On Gui day, traveling is most inauspicious, indicating loss or misfortune on the road.

The Nobleman is added to the position of Shen, indicating matters related to farmland and taxes, because Shen is the place where water is in its growth phase, and the Nobleman belongs to earth, which remotely controls the water in Shen. Water is in its growth phase in Shen and in its prosperity phase in Zi. The Heavenly Empress belongs to water and is added to Shen, thus indicating lakes and ponds. On Jia day, it indicates a pond; on Wu day, it indicates a lake. However, on Bing and Ding days, it is not considered as lakes or ponds, but rather as "the sun obscured by clouds," indicating obscure and unclear affairs, requiring vigilance against secret observation and plots. On the six Xin days, Tai Yin is added to Shen. When the energy is in its prosperous and strong phase, it indicates wheat; when the energy is in captivity or decline, it indicates defending the city.

Teng Snake falling on the position of Shen indicates funeral matters: On a Jia day, it signifies the death of a superior or wealthy family member; on a Wu day, the death of a servant or婢女; or death due to illness caused by official affairs. On a Geng day, it indicates a sudden death from weakness rather than prolonged illness. On a Bing day, it signifies the death of someone involved in official duties or a family engaged in metalworking. The grinding mill is governed by Tian Kong, while market transactions and trade are governed by Liu He. On a Ren or Gui day, women are involved in transactions or marriage negotiations. On a Bing or Ding day, men are involved in transactions, which pertain to brokers or official purchases and sales. The Vermilion Bird governs hunting or robbery and conflict, although this interpretation is unclear in old texts. Some say the Black Tortoise governs this.

Small Auspicious (Wei)

Small Favor is not associated with the Earth God. After the Summer Solstice, the sun moves through the constellation of the Hare's Head (the original text simply writes 'chun'), so the Earthly Branch 'Wei' is the Month General for the fifth month.

The term "small auspiciousness" refers to the weather condition at the summer solstice when the first trace of yin begins to emerge: yang is greatly retreating while yin is slightly coming, which corresponds to the meaning of "great retreat and small arrival" in the "Zhou Changes (I Ching)" "Pu Hexagram." At this time, the path of the small person gradually grows longer, so it is only a "small" auspiciousness, not a great one. Another meaning is that at this point, all things have already achieved a small degree of success.

The deity Xiao Ji is the god of wind, known as the Wind Master. In ancient times, he corresponds to the药师, who gathers and prepares medicinal herbs.

The Heavenly Stem Ding resides in the position of Wei. Wood is buried beneath Wei, and Ding represents the essential image of the Heavenly General Tai Chang among the Twelve Heavenly Generals. It corresponds to the pentatonic note Zheng, has a number value of eight, and a taste of sweetness. It corresponds to the constellations Jing Xu and Gui Xu. Its animal symbols are an, sheep, and eagle. It corresponds to the Cancer palace. Its territorial division belongs to the state of Qin and the region of Yongzhou. Its zodiac sign is the sheep, and its direction is the southwest.

It governs matters such as wine and food banquets, marriage and wedding ceremonies, and worship and sacrifices.

According to classification of symbolic meanings, Wei represents the 'Heavenly Wine Star'; when combined with the hours of Si and Wu, it also functions as the 'Heavenly Ear'; additionally, it can be interpreted as the Wind God and ghosts (some interpretations specifically refer to the deceased ancestors of the family).

The trigram Tai Chang is associated with the position of the earth branch Wei. In terms of people, it represents nurturing parents and elders; when it is placed over the亥 position, it signifies a stepfather; when over the You position, it signifies a stepmother. It also represents aunts, sisters-in-law, maternal aunts, sisters, matchmakers, wet nurses, widows, hermits, winemakers, and hat makers.

In matters of affairs, when the Azure Dragon is harmonious with the Day Stem, it indicates being invited or summoned; it also signifies celebrations, banquets, and gatherings. If the Fire Trigram is seen on the year pillar, it indicates separation and dispersion.

In heavenly calamities, the Earthly Branch 未 indicates drought and extreme heat; if the Vermilion Bird is added to the hours of Hai or Zi, it signifies a plague of locusts.

On the body, Wei governs liver disorders, as well as ailments of the spine and dislocated bones.

In terms of location, 未 governs the courtyard; when added to the position of 辰, it governs walls and fences; when added to the position of 卯, it governs forests and trees; it also governs earthen objects, wells, springs, kilns, and metalworking workshops; it governs cemeteries (on 甲 and 乙 days, the surname should be in the angle tone); it also governs tea houses, wine shops, and venues for religious festivals and performances.

In matters of objects and food, it governs seafood and fresh ingredients, plates and bowls, cups and vessels, caps and hats, clothing and garments, seals and official documents, reed pipes and musical instruments, medicines; it also governs crops and wine signs. When the Azure Dragon and Heavenly Empress are present at the寅 or卯 hour, it governs mulberry trees, wine vessels, hemp materials.

In surnames, those belonging to the Earthly Branch "Wei" include Zhu, Qin, Gao, Zhang, Yang, Du, Jing, Wei, and Yang; generally, surnames with characters resembling the radical "sheep" or "earth" are categorized under this group.

The song says: Xiaoji on Wei riding Tai Yin indicates the maternal aunt or maternal uncle; riding Qinglong indicates marriage ceremonies; riding Tai Chang and seeing Xuanwu and Guiren indicates preparing sheep and wine, and worshipping and praying to deities; riding Teng Snake and seeing the funeral chariot indicates white-haired mourning clothes; on Ren and Gui days, riding Zhuque and Gou Chen indicates disputes and lawsuits; riding Tianhou indicates the maternal grandfather and maternal grandmother; riding Tiankong indicates well water, and in the fourth month, riding Tiankong is also called Tian'er and is favorable for capturing and searching; on Yi day, riding Baihu indicates tombs; on Xin and Ji days, riding Baihu indicates strong winds and stormy weather.

The annotation explains that Tai Yin is located on Wei, governing matters related to maternal aunts, paternal aunts, and sisters. Qing Long is located on Wei, governing marriage ceremonies. Tai Chang, the deity of grain and rice, when combined with Ren and Gui days on Wei, uses the earth of Wei to overcome the water of Ren and Gui, as grain is fermented with water to make wine, thus governing drunkenness and wine. On Ji and Ding days, the nobleman is located on Hai as "Tian Zhu Sha" and on Wei as "Tian Yang Sha." Since Hai and Wei are part of the triple harmony of Hai, Mao, and Wei, and Tai Chang is on Wei, it governs pigs and sheep. When the nobleman is located on Wei, Xuan Wu is on Hai and forms a triple harmony with Wei, governing worship and prayer to deities. Since Xuan Wu is the general of the Big Dipper, responsible for supernatural affairs, it is not allowed to be on Chou or Wei. Chou and Wei are the domains of the nobleman, so when Xuan Wu arrives there, it loses its position as a general. Just as a gentleman does not contend with a petty person, it only mentions "worship and prayer."

The term "white head" refers to mourning attire. Teng Snake is associated with both the funeral chariot and the soul evil, and when these three factors coincide with the hexagram of Wei, it indicates the wearing of mourning clothes. Gou Chen signifies conflict, meaning that the general in command is at a strong position and when the divination is made on a Ren or Gui day, there will certainly be disputes. Zhu Que governs official lawsuits and documents. Tian Hou belongs to water, and since water is generated here and wood is buried in the Wei hexagram, it refers to the women of the mother's generation. Tian Kong governs wells and springs; if accompanied by evil stars, it indicates something strange happening in the well or the well wall collapsing. In the fourth month, Tian Kong is also called "Tian Er Sha." Whenever arrests are made, encountering this evil star ensures accurate information. The "Tian Er Sha" evil star begins in the first month at Xu and proceeds through the seasons of Chen, Xu, Chou, and Wei. On a wood day, if Bai Hu is on Wei, it is called "Feng Shi Sha," indicating a great wind. On six Yi days, if Bai Hu is on Wei, it is also called "Feng Shi," indicating a strong wind.
