The text says: The Vermilion Bird belongs to the South; all matters concerning documents should be guarded against. At Zi it is called "Damage to the Wings," indicating self-injury and calamity; at Chou it is called "Covering the Eyes," suitable for keeping still and thus achieving prosperity. At Yin and Mao it is called "Safe Nest," indicating delay and entanglement; at Chen and Xu it is called "Throwing into the Net," indicating mistakes and loss. At Shen it is called "Harsh Beak," and at Wu it is called "Carrying a Symbol," both indicating strange occurrences leading to legal disputes. At Wei it is called "Approaching the Tomb," and at Hai it is called "Entering Water," both indicating sorrow. As for official troubles arising beneath the chicken window, it is because it is at You position, making noise at night; and the arrival of messages and letters is due to it being at Si position, soaring high during the day.
The explanation states that the Vermilion Bird belongs to the element of fire, and when it is on the Zi branch, it is subject to water, which is the element that overcomes fire, thus indicating self-injury. There is another interpretation that it may instead indicate receiving official seals or documents from the government. On the Guichou day, it is called "breaking the head," which suggests that one should remain calm and self-restrained. Another interpretation suggests it may indicate the emergence of land-related matters. On the Yin and Mao branches, official documents remain stationary; another interpretation says that on Yin it is called "safe nest," indicating good news related to written communications and letters from afar, while on Mao it is called "sitting in the forest," indicating being wronged and oppressed. On the Chen and Xu branches, official documents may be lost or forgotten; another interpretation suggests there may be some news, disputes, and verbal conflicts. The Shen branch is the place where fire is overcome, so it is called "dangerous mouth," indicating fear and strange occurrences; Shen also indicates that there is still news on the way. The Wu branch is the original position of the Vermilion Bird, so it is called "biting the symbol," indicating legal disputes; another interpretation suggests it may relate to marriage.
Wood is the parent of fire, and the墓 of wood is in Wei. Therefore, when the Vermilion Bird arrives at Wei, it is called "ling fen," indicating sorrowful events. Another interpretation says that at Wei, it signifies pecking, which is favorable for seeking wealth. Hai is the place where fire is born and nurtured, so it is called "ru shui," suitable for maintaining stillness but not for making suggestions. Another interpretation calls it "mo yu," indicating loss of wealth. At Zi, it is called "tou jiang," indicating the removal of disasters. You is where fire is overcome, and in terms of time, it belongs to the night, so it signifies legal troubles and disputes, as well as illness. Si is the place where the fire's energy rises, and in terms of time, it belongs to the day, so it signifies official documents and messages; another interpretation says it indicates someone being away and holding a high position.

The poem says: The Vermilion Bird, known as the Feathered Forest General, who is two positions ahead of the Nobleman, is the planet of calamity and thunder; officials worry about examinations and documents, while common people suffer over their wives and wealth. When the energy is prosperous and strong, it receives support and things can be resolved; when the energy declines, becomes weak, or is restrained, things will hesitate and not progress. For divination on illness, it indicates injury to the heart and abdomen along with vomiting, and the day of recovery should be determined by the days of Zi, Wu, and Chen.

Liu He
Liu He: Discussing the concept of Liu He.
Liu He is in heaven serving as a Grand Secretary, and is the rain deity in the Thunder Department. Its native position is at Yimao Wood, ranking third before the Nobleman. During the three months of spring and the six days of Yimao, it is in its prime and is a fortunate general.
Liu He is the deity of harmony and concord, with a gentle and compliant nature, capable of flexibly connecting matters between people. It is located in the East, being the eldest daughter among the five yin of the Eastern Emperor, and its duty is to assist and support. When it is in a favorable position, it governs scholars of literature and officials of various kinds; when it is in an unfavorable position, it leads to confusion, deception, and people such as monks, Taoist priests, and nuns. It is favorable when accompanied by Qinglong and Tai Chang, but it fears Tianhou, Taiyin, Baihu, and Tiankong. It is unfavorable when positioned at the four central directions of Zi, Wu, Mao, and You.
Liu He governs matters such as marriage, celebrations, messages, aspirations, trade, pregnancy and childbirth, matchmakers, brokers and guarantors, private affairs, property, documents and contracts, planting trees and bushes, and ships and vehicles. When Liu He is adverse, it indicates hidden punishments, initial joy followed by worry, mistakes by small people or women, and the loss or injury of domestic animals. There is another view that Liu He governs gates, roads, and changes and transitions.
Whenever the Six Harmonies are riding on prosperous and strong energy, and they are mutually generated with the day stem, following the natural order to enter the initiating transmission and the three transmissions, it indeed indicates happy events such as marriage or childbirth, private matters, and gains. If the energy is in a state of death or imprisonment and it is harmful to the day stem, it indicates loss of property, disputes, and disturbances from unseen people. When the Six Harmonies are combined with You or Xu, it often indicates the loss of servants. Once I saw crows peeking into the courtyard, and the divination showed the Six Harmonies combined with Xu at the gate, and within ten days there was indeed a servant who ran away. Since the Six Harmonies represent the private door between heaven and earth, it is most inauspicious for thieves when the Six Harmonies enter the hexagram—once the private door is opened, the escaped person will be difficult to capture.
Liu He and Heavenly Empress appear together in the transmission, forming the 'Cunning Boy and Unfaithful Girl' hexagram. If this hexagram is divined, the person involved is likely to have improper conduct and engage in deceitful actions, and one should also beware of losing something. When Liu He is attached to the metal god, it is called 'internal warfare', indicating secret matters and disputes between women and brothers. When attached to the earth god, it is called 'external warfare', indicating affairs outside, with unrest in planning and discussion, and it is suitable to seek help secretly and make private prayers. If Liu He meets an incompatible position, then each holds secret intentions, which refers specifically to the positions of You, Mao, Zi, and Wu.
When theLiu He energy is strong, it indicates rewards and promotion in official position; when it is in the state of mutual assistance, it relates to marriage and dowry; when it is in the state of decline, it signifies disputes over property or death and mourning; when it is in captivity, it relates to marriage, imprisonment, private matters, and schemes or concealment; when it is in rest, it indicates illness and private affairs.

The text says: The deity of Liu He governs marriage and auspicious gatherings. At亥it is called "waiting for orders," peaceful and trouble-free; at巳it is discordant, causing disturbance and confusion; at子it signifies parting, indicating improper behavior; at酉it is called "private intrusion," arising from ambiguous circumstances. The explanation states: Hai is the place of growth for wood, and it forms a triple harmony with Mao, so marriage and all affairs are smooth and auspicious. Si is the place of growth for metal, which is a harmful place for theLiu He wood, so it is inauspicious; another interpretation says that in Si it is called "zhuishu," which signifies messages and meeting noblemen. Zi and Mao are in conflict, leading to enmity within affection, making marriage impossible and husband and wife not harmonious; another interpretation says that in Zi it is called "chihuh," which advises caution against illness. You is the private door, and withLiu He it indicates a man's infidelity; it is also called "xianzú," indicating inability to advance. In Yin, all things are smooth, and another interpretation says that in Yin it is auspicious for going out and seeking opportunities. In Shen, one interpretation calls it "pifa," indicating just having escaped illness and injury.

Chen and Xu are considered places of imprisonment, and Mao is secretly connected with Xu, so they indicate adultery and offenses. When Chen is mentioned, it is called "Chi Jin," indicating marriage matters; when Xu is mentioned, it is called "Deng Tu." Wu is the main position of the Triple Harmony fire, so it is called "Sheng Tang," meaning things are half completed; another interpretation says that if it is drawn in the tenth month, it is unfavorable for the household and children. Mao is originally the gate, so "Ru Shi" is considered auspicious; another interpretation says it may bring misfortune to the children. Wei forms a Triple Harmony with Mao, so it is called "Na Cai"; Chou is a place where metal energy resides, so it is called "Zhuang Yan." Another interpretation says Wei indicates wearing plain clothes and Chou indicates illness.
Liu He · Poetry
The poem explains: When the Nobleman's three preceding trigrams form Liu He, it signifies the position of Grand Counselor, which governs harmony, gatherings, and marriage, with auspicious signs supporting it. A gentleman who divines this may expect promotion and increased salary, while a petty person may gain more food and greater joy. If the trigram is in mutual generation with the day trigram, then affairs and production will bring good fortune. If the trigram is controlled by the day trigram, then secret schemes and theft may occur. When asking about illness, it indicates imbalance of yin and yang and pain in the chest and abdomen. One must worship the earth god and the Director of Destiny to be relieved. (The term '丈人' is sometimes interpreted as the earth god.)

Gou Chen
Gou Chen · Discussion
Gou Chen serves as a Grand General in the heavens (some say as the Left General), and acts as the deity who summons clouds within the Thunder Department. It is the fourth position before the Nobleman, with a Nayin sound element belonging to Wuchen earth. It is dominant in the seasons of the fourth, sixth, second, and fourth months, and is a malevolent general.
Gou Chen originally represents the killing energy within the palace, serving as a general. When it holds power, it can obey orders and enhance military strength, but when it loses power, soldiers suffer defeat. It is cautious and holds authority, being a soldier in armor, guarding the gates. It is very fond of disputes and often harbors divided intentions; if it is associated with a funeral carriage or a mourning guest, it becomes a god of filial impiety. It prefers to be with Xuan Wu and Tian Kong, but fears Qing Long and Tian Hou, and does not stand on the four Meng positions of寅,申,巳,亥.
Gou Chen governs military weapons, legal disputes and official matters, as well as seals, tiger tokens, entanglements and delays, property conflicts over land and houses, and wealth. It indicates stagnation and lack of progress in divinations concerning messages, seeking wealth, or traveling. When Gou Chen is unfavorable, it signifies illness and hardship, misfortune and entanglements, and loss of property—this applies to common people. However, for officials, Gou Chen is considered as the official seal: when its energy is strong, it brings good fortune; when weak, it brings misfortune.
When divining about lawsuits, one should first take Gou Chen as the main factor. If Gou Chen harms the day stem, the case will be difficult to clear; if the day stem overcomes Gou Chen, the lawsuit can be justified. It is also unfavorable if Gou Chen's hidden spirit attaches to Teng Snake, Tian Shu, and Vermilion Bird. If this is combined with凶杀 (evil spirits) that overcome the day stem, it is most dangerous. If Gou Chen's hidden spirit acts as a nobleman and generates and supports the day stem, then having the nobleman's help is auspicious, but it is also necessary that the person's year stem does not fall into Kongwang.
When divining about arrests and captures, if the Heavenly Thief and the Gou Chen are riding on a god that can control the god ridden by the Black Tortoise, it indicates that the thief can be captured. If the Gou Chen is positioned over the Day Stem, it also indicates that the thief can be captured. If the situation is reversed, the thief cannot be caught. Additionally, if the place where the Gou Chen is stationed can control the place where the Black Tortoise is stationed, it indicates that the thief will be exposed or surrender voluntarily. For example, if the Black Tortoise is stationed at Shen or You, and the Gou Chen is stationed at Si or Wu, this is such a situation.
To predict weather, it is most suitable for Gou Chen to enter the transmission and be located on the day branch, controlling Xuan Wu, indicating clear weather. For predicting conflicts, the same method applies, using whether Gou Chen can control Xuan Wu to make the judgment. For predicting residential or tomb sites, if Gou Chen is in a strong state and placed over the tomb or residence, it indicates stability and longevity, with no need for relocation; if the energy is in a weak and confined state and there is mutual harm, it indicates official affairs.
The "Gou Chen拔剑" evil influence signifies illness and mutual harm. Its method of calculation starts from the fourth earthly branch (巳) in the first lunar month and proceeds in reverse through the twelve earthly branches. If it meets with the branches of Chen, Xu, Chou, or Wei, the calamities will be continuous and severe. Meeting Chen and Xu brings great misfortune, while meeting Chou and Wei leads to disputes. Moreover, if Gou Chen is accompanied by punishments orInauspicious Sha, misfortune will arrive immediately.
Gou Chen's energy in its旺 state indicates disputes among noblemen; in its相 state, it signifies litigation among noblemen; in its死 state, it indicates contention over the property of the deceased; in its囚 state, it signifies litigation and imprisonment; and in its休 state, it indicates contention over the property of the sick.

The text says: If Gou Chen initiates the transmission, it indicates disputes and lawsuits, which are the faults of officials. In Chou it is called "Receiving the Sword," and in Zi it is called "Submerging the Halberd," both indicating being humiliated and harmed secretly, even leading to imprisonment. In Yin it is favorable for submitting memorials and offering strategies; in Si it is called "Presenting the Seal," indicating a change of position and good news arriving. In Mao the household will certainly be unsettled, and there is a risk of being injured by a blade; in You the person themselves will suffer corporal punishment, or be summoned to court. In Chen there will be纠缠 by jailers leading to disputes; in Wu one will be implicated by others and suffer by association. In Wei it is called "Entering the Inn," and in Xu it is called "Being Imprisoned," with all matters of communication and litigation being delayed. In Shen it is called "Rushing to the Door," and in Hai it is called "Lifting the Robe," both indicating repeated connections and changes.
The explanation states: Gou Chen governs conflict. Chou is Bright Hall, which is the place for rewarding meritorious deeds and judging crimes; Chou is also the axe and halberd, and when Gou Chen is present, it is called "receiving the halberd," indicating being humiliated by others. Zi is the dark chamber, hence called "submerging spears," indicating hidden harm. There is also a saying that at Chou it is called "entering transformation," indicating disputes; at Zi it is called "officialdom," indicating legal entanglements and unexpected changes, and another saying that it also relates to wealth. Some also say that Chou and Wei both govern food, drink, and property. At Yin, Gou Chen's earth is overcome by wood, leading to imprisonment, corporal punishment, and danger to oneself, which is favorable for submitting memorials and strategies. Si is the long life of metal, and it is a place where fire is strong, so metal fully immersed in fire can be cast into seals. When Gou Chen is present, it is called "holding the seal," and since fire is strong and earth is in its phase, it indicates promotion.
In the branch of Mao, there is being killed by the ghost, also called "entering prison," which is considered凶, indicating relocation of residence and being unfavorable to the household's younger members. The branch You belongs to metal and disperses the earth's energy, thus causing punishment and also indicating foot illness and difficulty in advancing. The branch Chen is originally associated with prison, and with Gou Chen added upon it, it indicates the arrival of prison officials for interrogation. The branch Wu is the place where earth is born, thus causing entanglements and troubles. Another saying states that in the branch Wei it is called "entering the post station," which is considered auspicious. In the branch Xu it is called "wearing a sword," which is considered凶. Another saying states that in the branch Shen it is called "river," which is considered auspicious. When added to the branch Hai, it is favorable for seeking wealth.
Gou Chen · Poetry
The poem says: When the Nobleman's first four positions have Gou Chen, it indicates a general, governing military calamities, punishments, disputes, and legal entanglements. A gentleman's divination suggests the ability to capture fugitives and apprehend thieves, while a petty person's divination indicates disputes over women and competition over fields and land. If the energy is prosperous and strong and is generated by the day, the matter is still reasonable. If the energy is in a state of death or imprisonment and is subject to mutual destruction, then there will be detention and delays. Divination regarding illness indicates boils and chills and fever, with the affliction originating from hills, tombs, and the walls of the family home.

Azure Dragon
Azure Dragon · Discussion
The Azure Dragon serves as the Left Chancellor in the heavens and acts as the deity who brings down sweet rain within the Thunder Department. It is the fifth among the Noblemen, with a Nayin sound element belonging to Jiayin wood. It is strong during the three months of spring and is a favorable general.
The Azure Dragon is the deity of water and wood, residing in the eastern direction, associated with the number five of the Nine Yang. Its native place is the寅 (Yin) position, which is the first of the Jia (Heavenly Stem)禄 (favorable position). It is noble, dignified, and upright, governing the vitalizing energy of growth. It serves as a minister assisting the sovereign. When it is in its native position, it brings wealth, honor, and respect; when it is not, it leads to the loss and dispersion of riches. It fears Tai Yin and the White Tiger, and prefers to be with the Heavenly Empress and Liu He. It does not stand on the positions of Shen or You.
The Azure Dragon governs matters such as writings, wealth, boats and vehicles, forests and trees, clothing, documents, government offices, promotions, monks and Taoists, wise men, marriage, celebrations, matchmakers, childbirth, banquets, and fruits and medicines. When it is adverse, it indicates weeping, illness, legal disputes, loss of property and livestock, drowning, and dangers on the water or with vehicles. In divination concerning government affairs, although the Azure Dragon is a favorable deity, if it enters the hexagram with a criminal or killing aspect and harms the day stem, it actually brings misfortune, because at this time it has become a killing deity. When a newlywed wife enters the household, it is most inauspicious if the deity riding upon the Heavenly Empress harms the Azure Dragon, which indicates harm to the husband.
Divination for seeking wealth should focus on the Azure Dragon: if it rides on the prosperous and strong energy and appears in a prosperous and strong place, and if it is in harmony with the day branch, or forms a Triple Harmony or Liu He with the day branch, it is auspicious. However, it must enter the day branch or the three transmissions, otherwise it falls into an idle place and seeking wealth becomes difficult. The same method applies to divination about marriage and childbirth. Also, if the Azure Dragon generates the native's destiny, there will be wealth; if it overcomes the native's destiny, wealth will be lost. Divination about thieves should avoid the Azure Dragon entering the hexagram, because the Azure Dragon has wings capable of flying万里 (ten thousand miles), allowing thieves to escape easily. Divination about a traveler also indicates that the person will move to another place.
Divination on illness shows that if the Azure Dragon enters the Three Transmissions, the cause of the illness is definitely due to alcohol and food, or from socializing with friends and indulging in personal pleasures. For divination on civil officials, look at the Azure Dragon; for military officials, look at Tai Chang. If they harmonize or combine with the Day Stem, it is auspicious; if they conflict, it is inauspicious. If the Master of Years is occupied by the Azure Dragon or Tai Chang, it certainly indicates promotion or transfer. Whenever the Azure Dragon and malevolent stars appear together and are placed above the Day Branch, it indicates that amidst joy and celebration, there will be disputes and injuries.

Azure Dragon · Assignment
The text says: The Azure Dragon governs wealth and joy, often leading to smooth and prosperous outcomes. When it is in You, it is called "Fú Lù," which is most suitable for retreating; when it is in Chou, it is called "Pán Ní," meaning that one's plans cannot be fulfilled as desired. When it is in Xu, it is called "Dēng Kuí," indicating disputes over wealth among petty people; when it is in Si, it is called "Fēi Tiān," suggesting that gentlemen wish to take action. When it is in Yin, it is called "Chéng Yún," and when it is in Mao, it is called "Qū Léi," both being favorable for business operations and advancement. When it is in Shen, it is called "Cuī Jiǎo," and when it is in Wei, it is called "Wú Lín," both being suitable for tranquility, with missteps leading to misfortune. When it is in Wu, it is called "Fén Shēn," and when it is in Chen, it is called "Yǎn Mù," both causing worries beyond financial matters. When it is in Zi, it is called "Rù Hǎi," and when it is in Hai, it is called "Yóu Jiāng," meaning that even if one is in confinement, any movement brings great fortune.
The explanation states that Tiankui (戌) represents the image of a petty person, so Qinglong (Azure Dragon) in戌 indicates disputes over wealth among small people.戌 is also called 「Yuyu」 (Autumn Rain), indicating travel and toil, which is ominous. In巳, the fire energy is strong, with the image of clouds moving and rain falling, so it is called 「Feilong」 (Flying Dragon), favorable for seeking audiences and making requests. In寅, it signifies being summoned, and also indicates joy from descendants. In卯, it is also called 「Xishui」 (Playing with Water), indicating wealth coming in abundance; another interpretation suggests that Qinglong riding寅 or卯 often relates to marriage proposals and discussions about marriage. If Qinglong is on寅 or卯 and overlaid by申 or酉, it indicates a broken foot, signifying disputes and lawsuits.
The Earthly Branch 未 is the resting place of wood, and 辰 is the resting place of water, so it is called "无鳞" (without scales). At 午 it is called "掩目" (covering the eyes), another term is "无毛" (without hair), indicating loss of wealth and worry about official matters. If the wife is already pregnant, a slight disturbance may not be harmful. Both 亥 and 子 indicate good fortune related to travel, vehicles, and wealth, and 亥 also relates to marriage. Another interpretation says that 子 is occupied by the Azure Dragon and combines with the female palace, indicating receiving imperial favor. It is also said that 子 and 午 with the Azure Dragon indicate the wife or concubine being pregnant, or that there is a pregnant woman at home.
