Duke Xuan

（經四六）葬鄭襄公。

(Classic) Duke Xiang of Zheng was buried.

（經四七）秋，公至自晉。

(Classic) In autumn, Duke Cheng returned from Jin.

（經四八）冬，城運。

(Classic) In winter, Yun was fortified.

（經四九）鄭伯伐許。

(Classic) The Earl of Zheng attacked Xu.

春，王正月，杞叔姬來歸。

In spring, in the first month of the Zhou calendar, Shu Ji of Qi returned.

（經五二）仲孫蔑如宋。

(Classic) Zhongsun Mie went to Song.

（經五三）夏，叔孫僑如會晉荀秀於谷。

(Classic) In summer, Shusun Qiaoru met Xun Xiu of Jin at Gu.

（經五四）梁山崩。

(Classic) Mount Liang collapsed.

（傳）梁山者何？河上之山也。梁山崩，何以書？記異也。何異爾？大也。何大爾？梁山崩，壅河三日不流。外異不書，此何以書？為天下記異也。

(Commentary) What is Mount Liang? It is a mountain beside the Yellow River. Why is the collapse of Mount Liang recorded? To record an anomaly. Where is the anomaly? In its greatness. Where is the greatness? When Mount Liang collapsed, it blocked the Yellow River so that it did not flow for three days. Anomalies abroad are normally not recorded, so why is this one recorded? To record an anomaly for the whole world.

(Classic) In autumn, there was a great flood.

（經五六）冬，十有一月己酉，天王崩。

(Classic) In winter, on the jiyou day of the eleventh month, the Son of Heaven died.

（經五七）十有二月己丑，公會晉侯、齊侯、宋公、衛侯、鄭伯、曹伯、邾婁子、杞伯同盟於蟲牢。

(Classic) In the twelfth month, on the jichou day, Duke Cheng joined the Marquis of Jin, the Marquis of Qi, the Duke of Song, the Marquis of Wei, the Earl of Zheng, the Earl of Cao, the Viscount of Zhulou and the Earl of Qi in a covenant at Chongmao.

春，王正月，公至自會。

In spring, in the first month of the Zhou calendar, Duke Cheng returned from the covenant.

（經六二）二月辛巳，立武宮。

(Classic) In the second month, on the xinsi day, the Wu Palace was established.

（傳）武宮者何？武公之宮也。立者何？立者不宜立也。立武宮，非禮也。

(Commentary) What is the Wu Palace? It is the palace of Duke Wu. What does "established" mean? "Established" means it should not have been established. Establishing the Wu Palace was not in accord with ritual.

（經六三）取鄟。

(Classic) Zhuan was seized.

（傳）鄟者何？邾婁之邑也。曷為不繫於邾婁？諱亟也。

(Commentary) What is Zhuan? It was a city of Zhulou. Why is it not attached to Zhulou? To conceal the haste of the taking.

（經六四）衛孫良夫率師侵宋。

(Classic) Sun Liangfu of Wei led an army to invade Song.

（經六五）夏，六月，邾婁子來朝。

(Classic) In summer, in the sixth month, the Viscount of Zhulou came to court.

（經六六）公孫嬰齊如晉。

(Classic) Gongsun Yingqi went to Jin.

（經六七）壬申，鄭伯費卒。

(Classic) On the renshen day, Fei, Earl of Zheng, died.

（經六八）秋，仲孫蔑、叔孫僑如率師侵宋。

(Classic) In autumn, Zhongsun Mie and Shusun Qiaoru led armies to invade Song.

（經六九）楚公子嬰齊率師伐鄭。

(Classic) Gongzi Yingqi of Chu led an army to attack Zheng.

（經六十）冬，季孫行父如晉。

(Classic) In winter, Jisun Xingfu went to Jin.

（經六十一）晉欒書率師侵鄭。

(Classic) Luan Shu of Jin led an army to invade Zheng.

春，王正月，鼷鼠食郊牛角。改卜牛，鼷鼠又食其角，乃免牛。

In spring, in the first month of the Zhou calendar, a field mouse gnawed the horn of the ox for the suburban sacrifice. Another ox was divined for, and the mouse gnawed its horn too, so the ox was released.

（經七二）吳伐郯。

(Classic) Wu attacked Tan.

（經七三）夏，五月，曹伯來朝。

(Classic) In summer, in the fifth month, the Earl of Cao came to court.

（經七四）不郊，猶三望。

(Classic) The suburban sacrifice was not held, but the three Wang sacrifices were still held.

（經七五）秋，楚公子嬰齊率師伐鄭。

(Classic) In autumn, Gongzi Yingqi of Chu led an army to attack Zheng.

（經七六）公會晉侯、齊侯、宋公、衛侯、曹伯、莒子、邾婁子、杞伯救鄭。

(Classic) Duke Cheng joined the Marquis of Jin, the Marquis of Qi, the Duke of Song, the Marquis of Wei, the Earl of Cao, the Viscount of Ju, the Viscount of Zhulou and the Earl of Qi in rescuing Zheng.

（經七七）八月戊辰，同盟於馬陵。

(Classic) In the eighth month, on the wuchen day, they made a covenant together at Maling.

（經七八）公至自會。

(Classic) Duke Cheng returned from the covenant.

（經七九）吳入州來。

(Classic) Wu entered Zhoulai.

（經七十）冬，大雩。

(Classic) In winter, the great rain sacrifice was held.

（經七十一）衛孫林父出奔晉。

(Classic) Sun Linfu of Wei fled to Jin.

春，晉侯使韓穿來言汶陽之田，歸之於齊。

In spring, the Marquis of Jin sent Han Chuan to speak about the Wenyang fields, and they were returned to Qi.

（傳）來言者何？內辭也，脅我使我歸之也。曷為使我歸之？鞍之戰，齊師大敗，齊侯歸，吊死視疾，七年不飲酒、不食肉。晉侯聞之曰：「嘻！奈何使人之君七年不飲酒、不食肉，請皆反其所取侵地。」

(Commentary) What does "came and spoke" mean? It is wording from within Lu, meaning we were coerced into returning them. Why were we made to return them? After the battle of An, the army of Qi was badly defeated, and the Marquis of Qi went back, condoling with the dead and visiting the sick, and for seven years did not drink wine or eat meat. The Marquis of Jin heard of it and said: "Ah! How can we make another state's ruler not drink wine or eat meat for seven years? Please return all the land taken by invasion."

（經八二）晉欒書帥師侵蔡。

(Classic) Luan Shu of Jin led an army to invade Cai.

（經八三）公孫嬰齊如莒。

(Classic) Gongsun Yingqi went to Ju.

（經八四）宋公使華元來聘。

(Classic) The Duke of Song sent Hua Yuan on a visit.

（經八五）夏，宋公使公孫壽來納幣。

(Classic) In summer, the Duke of Song sent Gongsun Shou to deliver betrothal gifts.

（傳）納幣不書，此何以書？錄伯姬也。

(Commentary) Delivering betrothal gifts is normally not recorded, so why is it recorded here? It is to record Bo Ji.

（經八六）晉殺其大夫趙同、趙括。

(Classic) Jin killed its grand masters Zhao Tong and Zhao Kuo.

（經八七）秋，七月，天子使召伯來錫公命。

(Classic) In autumn, in the seventh month, the Son of Heaven sent the Earl of Shao to bestow ceremonial robes on Duke Cheng.

（傳）其稱天子何？元年，春，王正月，正也，其餘皆通矣。

(Commentary) Why is he called "Son of Heaven"? In the first year, the spring first month of the Zhou calendar was the proper designation, and in the others it may be a general term.

（經八八）冬，十月癸卯，杞叔姬卒。

(Classic) In winter, on the guimao day of the tenth month, Shu Ji of Qi died.

（經八九）晉侯使士燮來聘。

(Classic) The Marquis of Jin sent Shi Xie on a visit.

（經八十）叔孫僑如會晉士燮、齊人、邾婁人伐郯。

(Classic) Shusun Qiaoru joined Shi Xie of Jin, the men of Qi and the men of Zhulou in attacking Tan.

（經八十一）衛人來媵。

(Classic) Men of Wei came to accompany the bride with gifts.

（傳）媵不書，此何以書？錄伯姬也。

(Commentary) Accompanying a bride with gifts is normally not recorded, so why is it recorded here? It is to record Bo Ji.

春，王正月，杞伯來逆叔姬之喪以歸。

In spring, in the first month of the Zhou calendar, the Earl of Qi came to fetch the coffin of Shu Ji and take it back.

（傳）杞伯曷為來逆叔姬之喪以歸？內辭也，脅而歸之也。

(Commentary) Why did the Earl of Qi come to fetch Shu Ji's coffin and take it back? It is wording from within Lu, meaning he was coerced before being allowed to take it back.

（經九二）公會晉侯、齊侯、宋公、衛侯、鄭伯、曹伯、莒子、杞伯同盟於蒲。公至自會。

(Classic) Duke Cheng joined the Marquis of Jin, the Marquis of Qi, the Duke of Song, the Marquis of Wei, the Earl of Zheng, the Earl of Cao, the Viscount of Ju and the Earl of Qi in a covenant at Pu. Duke Cheng returned from the covenant.

（經九三）二月，伯姬歸於宋。

(Classic) In the second month, Bo Ji married into Song.
