(Commentary) Why does the text lack "Zhulou"? Because Lan is treated as a state. Why is Lan treated as a state? The descendants of a worthy man should have land. Who is the worthy man? Shu Shu. Where was Shu Shu worthy? In yielding the state. How did he yield the state? In the time of Yan of Zhulou, there were women of Zhulou who became wives of the ruler of Lu, and it is not known whether this was Duke Wu or Duke Yi. Duke Xiao was young, and Yan committed lewdness with nine ducal sons in the palace and took the chance to bring in assassins; it is not known whether they were princes of Lu or princes of Zhulou. The mother of Zang was a woman who raised the duke. When a ruler is young he should have someone to raise him; she was the concubine of a grandee and the wife of a gentleman, and it is not known what kind of person Zang's mother was. One who raised the duke would surely bring her own son in to raise with him. Zang's mother heard that there were assassins, swapped her own son for the duke, and carried the duke away to flee. The assassins arrived, went to the duke's bedroom, and killed the child. Among the ministers were Bao Guangfu and Liang Maizi, who heard of the assassins and hurried over. Zang's mother said: "The duke has not died, he is here; I swapped my son for the duke." She then carried Duke Xiao on her back to Zhou to report to the Son of Heaven, who for this punished Yan and set up Shu Shu and sent Duke Xiao back to Lu. Yan's wife was a daughter of Yuying and a beauty of the state, and she said: "If anyone can kill the one who killed Yan for me, I will become his wife." Shu Shu killed the one who had killed Yan for her and married her; they had a son named Xu. Xiafu was the son she had borne to Yan. Xu was young, and everyone loved him; at meals he would have the two boys sit beside him to eat together, and when there were rare dishes, Xu would always take enough first. Xiafu said: "Take it over here; others do not have enough, yet Xu has more than he needs." Shu Shu awakened to it and said: "Ah! This is truly your state!" He rose and handed the state to Xiafu. Xiafu accepted but wished to divide it in half, and Shu Shu said: "No!" He proposed dividing it in three, and Shu Shu said: "No!" In four, and Shu Shu said: "No!" In five, and then he accepted. Gongxu Zi was a senior kinsman of Zhulou, familiar with the stories of Zhulou, and he said: "How could one speak of a worthy man of someone else's state like this!" At the time of punishing Yan, the Son of Heaven died, and Shu Shu rose and handed the state to Xiafu. At this time the people of Zhulou were often attacked by Zhou with troops, saying: "Why did you bring about the death of our Son of Heaven?" Treating Lan as a state, why does the text lack "Zhulou"? Under heaven there was not yet a state called Lan. If there was not yet a Lan under heaven, why is it written "came seeking refuge with Lan"? Shu Shu was a worthy grandee; to cut him off would be to not wish to cut Shu Shu off, but not cutting him off would make him a hereditary grandee. By the principle for grandees, they cannot be hereditary, so here it is set aside and treated as a state.
