(Commentary) Who was the bandit? It was Yang Hu. Who is Yang Hu? He was the steward of the Ji clan. The steward of the Ji clan was a lowly man; how could he obtain the treasures of the state and steal them? Yang Hu monopolized the Ji clan, and the Ji clan monopolized Lu. Yang Hu detained Jisun, and the Meng clan and the Shusun clan took turns sending him food. He squinted and carved on a board, saying: "On such a month and such a day, they will kill me at Pupu; those with the strength to save me should come at that time." On that day at that hour he came out. Lin Nan was Yang Hu's nephew and drove for him. When getting into the carriage, Jisun said to Lin Nan: "Given that the Ji clan has had a man like you for generations, can you keep me from dying?" Lin Nan said: "If my strength is not enough, how would I dare not exert it." Yang Yue was Yang Hu's cousin and served as the carriage guard. The Yang clan's followers numbered several dozen carriages, and when they reached the Meng thoroughfare, Lin Nan threw down his whip and Yang Yue got down to pick up the whip, and Lin Nan whipped the horses and galloped off, passing by the Meng clan; Yang Hu followed and shot at him, and the arrow struck the Zhuang gate. But the armored men rose up from Qinru. Having failed to kill the ruler, they withdrew and camped in the suburbs, all removing their armor to rest. Someone said: "You tried to kill the master of a thousand chariots and failed, yet stay here; is that all right?" Yang Hu said: "If that child gets the state, so be it; what can he do against a grown man?" He squinted and looked and said: "That man! That man! Quick, harness the carriage." Once the carriage was harnessed, Gongxian Chufu arrived with an army, and only then did he barely escape, fleeing from there to Jin. What were the treasures? A half-white zhang jade tablet, a bow with embroidered backing, and a tortoise with blue edging.
