Two, Chapter on Examples of Divination Using the Eight Trigrams

The hexagram of "Dui" (Joy): Two lakes connected and moistening each other, called Dui; friends discussing and studying together, the precious thing is mutual trust; mutually moistening and promoting sincerity and respect; harmonious communication, things can be accomplished. Judgment: Dui is "Joy," all matters can be harmonious and united: illness is cured, marriage is successful, pregnancy results in birth, misfortunes retreat, oneself and the family are safe, a traveler arrives immediately, livestock multiply and bring wealth, profit is a hundredfold. The hexagram of "Gen" (Obstruction): There is no water in the lake, so it is called Gen; yin lines cover yang lines, the principles are not clear; only by being sincere and firm can one endure; although the body is in a difficult situation, the path remains smooth. Judgment: Gen is "Obstruction," yin qi covers yang qi: the family, oneself, pregnancy, and illness all suffer; gaining wealth and profit is little, lawsuits are obstructed; I advise the person consulting the oracle to remain steady and follow the norm. The hexagram of "Cui" (Gathering): The joy of Dui and the gentleness of Kun combine to form the hexagram of Cui; with sincere heart and utmost respect, one can move the spirits; holding fast to the right path, not changing; blessings gather, misfortunes disappear, great good fortune. Judgment: Cui is "Gathering," to connect with things is to be sincere in oneself: oneself and wealth are both auspicious, blessings and official rank both flourish; marriage is harmonious, livestock multiply, illness and lawsuits eventually turn out well, though the harvest is late, it can still be successful. The hexagram of "Xian" (Attraction): The lake of Dui and the mountain of Gen combine, which is attraction; only with attraction can there be communication, this is a very common principle; harmony between upper and lower is a good omen; being empty in the middle to receive external things is even more virtuous. Judgment: Xian is "Attraction," there is a response to every feeling: official ghosts are fully protected, the family and oneself have joy; suitable for pregnancy and marriage, favorable for lawsuits and illness; although the way of Xian is open, it is still advisable to remain loyal and upright.

The hexagram of Jian: There is danger ahead and danger behind, hence it is called Jian; advancing leads to many difficulties, while retreating is more appropriate; the hexagram statement says "great Jian, friends come together," relying on what? It relies on being strong yet moderate, knowing when to stop, and being skillful in adapting to the right time. Interpretation: Jian means "difficulty," and all matters are slow and hard to proceed: seeking official positions and noble patrons is difficult, travel is not advisable, do not consult about oneself or wealth, and do not inquire about marriage or pregnancy; if one asks how to get out of danger, the answer is simply to maintain the usual and be content with one's role. The hexagram of Qian: There is a mountain beneath the earth, symbolizing humility; cultivating humility as a virtue aligns with the true and constant way; having achievements without boasting is the true gentleman; the lower one's posture, the brighter the path. Interpretation: Qian means "humility," characterized by gentleness, humility, and knowing one's limits: marriage is not favorable, do not inquire about moving, do not strongly pursue wealth, and temporarily cease legal disputes; oneself is auspicious, illness can be cured, and those who are traveling will soon arrive. The hexagram of Xiaoguo: There is thunder on the mountain, called Xiaoguo; like a bird passing by leaving a sound; the mind is clear about the distance traveled; abandoning the great and taking the small, calamity will not reach oneself. Interpretation: Xiaoguo means "a small excess," and the excess is not far: oneself and the household face minor calamities, transactions bring little profit, legal matters are obstructed, illness is concerning, pregnancy is alarming, and marriage matters should be avoided; all matters consulted are only of a shallow and minor nature. The hexagram of Guimei: Thunder and Lake combine to form Guimei; a young woman following a strong man is appropriate; when inquiring about matters, it is suitable to remain still; if planning to act, one must wait for the right time. Interpretation: Guimei means "returning," symbolizing a woman's marriage: legal disputes are unclear, do not inquire about the official positions of noble patrons; oneself and the household face only minor worries, but marriage is most favorable; remaining still is appropriate, while reckless action is not suitable.

Section Eighteen: Changes and Transformations

One, The Chapter of Ultimate Transformation

Fuxi observed the principle of the Taiji and drew the hexagrams. At first he drew one line, symbolizing the transformation of Taiji; then he drew another line above it, symbolizing heaven; and another line below it, symbolizing earth. When the three lines were combined, they symbolized the three elements of heaven, earth, and humanity. This hexagram is Qian, and its nature is strong and vigorous. When two Qian hexagrams are stacked together, they form the hexagram of Kun, whose diagram symbolizes the four directions and the six harmonies. This hexagram is Kun, and its nature is gentle and yielding. The hexagrams Qian and Kun interact and change to produce six subsidiary hexagrams; these six subsidiary hexagrams are generated by Qian and Kun taking each other as their foundation. An example is shown in the previous "Diagram of Qian and Kun Generating the Six Subsidiary Hexagrams."

Two, the Chapter on the Transformation of Single Trigrams

Heaven is the father, Earth is the mother, Kan, Zhen, and Gen are the three male trigrams, Xun, Li, and Dui are the three female trigrams, together making the Eight Trigrams. Each trigram has three lines, which change from bottom to top in the following order: first three lines ascend, then two descend, then two ascend, and finally one descends, completing eight changes and returning to the original trigram. One trigram can change into the Eight Trigrams, and when the Eight Trigrams are stacked on top of each other, they form the sixty-four Hexagrams. Taking the trigram Qian (☰) as an example: the first change, the first line becomes yin, forming Xun (☴), and when combined with the original trigram, it becomes the Hexagram Gou (《姤》). The second change, the middle line becomes yin, forming Gen (☶), which is the Hexagram Duan (《遁》). The third change, the top line becomes yin, forming Kun (☷), which is the Hexagram Pǐ (《否》). The fourth change, the middle line returns to yang, forming Kan (☵), which is the Hexagram Song (《讼》). The fifth change, the first line returns to yang, forming Dui (☱), which is the Hexagram Li (《履》). The sixth change, the middle line becomes yin again, forming Zhen (☳), which is the Hexagram Wuwang (《无妄》). The seventh change, the top line returns to yang, forming Li (☲), which is the Hexagram Tongren (《同人》). The eighth change, the middle line returns to yang, forming Qian (☰), returning to the original trigram. The other seven trigrams are changed in the same way.

Three, the Chapter on the Transformation of the Combined Hexagrams

Each hexagram consists of six lines, and the transformation proceeds from the bottom up until the fifth line, while the top line remains unchanged. The method involves five ascents and four descents, followed by four ascents and three descents, totaling nine ascents and seven descents, resulting in sixteen transformations before returning to the original hexagram. Taking the Qian hexagram as an example, the original hexagram is Qian. The first transformation changes the first line to yin, forming Tian Feng Gou, which is the first generation hexagram. The second transformation changes the second line to yin, forming Tian Shan Dun, which is the second generation hexagram. The third transformation changes the third line to yin, forming Tian Di Pi, which is the third generation hexagram. The fourth transformation changes the fourth line to yin, forming Feng Di Guan, which is the fourth generation hexagram. The fifth transformation changes the fifth line to yin, forming Shan Di Bo, which is the fifth generation hexagram. The sixth transformation returns the fourth line to yang, forming Huo Di Jin, which is the wandering soul hexagram. The seventh transformation returns the third line to yang, forming Huo Shan Lu, which belongs to the hidden hexagram. The eighth transformation returns the second line to yang, forming Huo Feng Ding, which also belongs to the hidden hexagram. The ninth transformation returns the first line to yang, forming Huo Tian Da You, which is the returning soul hexagram. This process describes ascending from the first line and then descending back to the first line, known as 'five ascents and four descents'.

Then the change continues: the second line becomes yin, forming the hexagram Li (Fire); then the third line becomes yin, forming the hexagram Shihe (Crushing the Bones); then the fourth line becomes yin, forming the hexagram Yi (Nourishment); then the fifth line becomes yang, forming the hexagram Yi (Benefit); then the fourth line becomes yang again, forming the hexagram Wuxiang (No Falsehood); then the third line becomes yang, forming the hexagram Tongren (Union); then the second line changes again, and this section is called "four ascending and three descending." However, the school of Shang Zhan only takes the eight trigrams: from the first generation hexagram up to the fifth generation hexagram, then directly from the youhun hexagram to the guihun hexagram. If one wants to change all the way back, one would need to use the full sixteen hexagrams. Here we take Qian Palace as an example, and the other palaces can be inferred similarly.

Four, the chapter on the transformation of the sixty-four hexagrams.

The eight trigrams can be combined by stacking and overlapping to form the sixty-four hexagrams. Each hexagram can further change into sixty-four variations, resulting in a total of four thousand and ninety-six hexagrams. Taking the hexagram Qian as an example, the other hexagrams can be similarly deduced. The primary hexagram is Qian. Changing one line results in six hexagrams: Gou, Tongren, Lu, Xiaoxu, Dayou, and Guai. Changing two lines results in fifteen hexagrams: Duan, Wuwang, Song, Xun, Jiaoren, Zhongfú, Ding, Li, Kui, Da Guo, Ge, Dui, Da Xu, Da Zhuang, Xu. Changing three lines results in twenty hexagrams: Pǐ, Tai, Yi, Zhen, Hun, Lu, Shihè, Weijì, Xian, Sui, Kun, Gu, Ben, Shen, Heng, Feng, Gui Mei, Jing, Ji Ji. Changing four lines results in fifteen hexagrams: Jin, Gen, Yi, Meng, Xiaoguo, Zhen, Jie, Jian, Tun, Kan, Sheng, Mingyi, Lin, Cui, Guan. Changing five lines results in six hexagrams: Po, Bi, Yu, Qian, Shi, Fu. Changing all six lines results in one hexagram, which is Kun. Adding six plus fifteen plus twenty plus fifteen plus six plus one equals sixty-three variations, together with the original hexagram, making a total of sixty-four.

Taking the hexagram Qian as an example, the method of change for all sixty-four hexagrams is the same. When Qian reaches its extreme, it comes to a stop at Kun; when Kan reaches its extreme, it comes to a stop at Li; when Gen reaches its extreme, it comes to a stop at Dui; when Kun reaches its extreme, it comes to a stop at Qian; when Xun reaches its extreme, it comes to a stop at Zhen; when Li reaches its extreme, it comes to a stop at Kan; when Dui reaches its extreme, it comes to a stop at Gen: this is called the ultimate of complete change of all six lines. Those who are good at observing change can advance when appropriate, retreat when appropriate, and stop when appropriate. If advancing, retreating, and stopping are all not possible, then one should only follow the natural course and submit to the times. The essence of valuing adaptability and flexibility is contained within this passage. Those who are enlightened can understand it thoroughly.

Five, the Chapter on Time Changes.

The hexagrams Qian and Kun are the gateways of the Book of Changes, while the hexagrams Fu and Guo are the gateways of Qian and Kun. This chapter pairs the twelve message hexagrams with months, days, hours, and the line statements of the hexagrams Qian and Kun. Fu is paired with the eleventh month, the first, second, and third days of each month, and the Zi hour; one yang begins to arise, corresponding to the line statement of Qian's initial line, "The dragon remains hidden and should not be used." Lin is paired with the twelfth month, the fourth and fifth days of each month, and the Chou hour; two yangs, corresponding to the line statement of Qian's second line, "The dragon appears in the field." Tai is paired with the first month, the sixth, seventh, and eighth days of each month, and the Yin hour; three yangs, corresponding to the line statement of Qian's third line, "All day long the dragon toils diligently." Da Zhuang is paired with the second month, the ninth and tenth days of each month, and the Mao hour; four yangs, corresponding to the line statement of Qian's fourth line, "The dragon may leap in the abyss." Guai is paired with the third month, the eleventh, twelfth, and thirteenth days of each month, and the Chen hour; five yangs, corresponding to the line statement of Qian's fifth line, "The dragon soars in the sky." Qian is paired with the fourth month, the fourteenth and fifteenth days of each month, and the Si hour; six yangs, corresponding to the line statement of Qian's top line, "The dragon reaches its peak and incurs regret." Guo is paired with the fifth month, the sixteenth, seventeenth, and eighteenth days of each month, and the Wu hour; one yin begins to arise, corresponding to the line statement of Kun's initial line, "Walking on frost, the ice is firm." Dùn is paired with the sixth month, the nineteenth and twentieth days of each month, and the Wei hour; two yins, corresponding to the line statement of Kun's second line, "Straight, square, and great." Pǐ is paired with the seventh month, the twenty-first, twenty-second, and twenty-third days of each month, and the Shen hour; three yins, corresponding to the line statement of Kun's third line, "Containing virtue, it is proper." Guān is paired with the eighth month, the twenty-fourth and twenty-fifth days of each month, and the You hour; four yins, corresponding to the line statement of Kun's fourth line, "Sealing the bag," meaning keeping silent, thus avoiding mistakes. Po is paired with the ninth month, the twenty-sixth, twenty-seventh, and twenty-eighth days of each month, and the Xu hour; five yins, corresponding to the line statement of Kun's fifth line, "The yellow garment brings great good fortune." Kun is paired with the tenth month, the twenty-ninth and thirtieth days of each month, and the Hai hour; six yins, corresponding to the line statement of Kun's top line, "The dragon fights in the fields."

Six, the Chapter on Events and Changes.

The concept of a hexagram refers to an event; the concept of a line refers to the time at which this event occurs. When a hexagram changes, the event itself also changes; the lines indicate the transformation of time. By observing the positions of the lines and examining their changes, one can adapt to the right moment and gain advantage. By observing the hexagram and contemplating its accompanying text, one can pursue good fortune and avoid misfortune. The key to understanding change lies in the value of quieting the mind and entering a state of inner stillness: when the mind is calm, one can perceive the subtle beginnings of an event; by perceiving these beginnings, one can adjust accordingly and align with the Way. The section of "Estimating Divination in the Zhou Changes" ends here.
