Charting guides: Liu Yao Divination Chart, Da Yan Yarrow Stalk Divination

If one encounters the "Tail Fire Tiger" and the "Ji Water Leopard," these mighty and fierce beasts would overwhelm all other animals. The original commentary states: if these two animals appear in a divination, military campaigns will result in a hundred victories. All affairs will proceed correctly and on a grand scale, indicating a prosperous and flourishing situation.

"The Horn mansion (Jiao Mu Jiao) and the Neck mansion (Kang Jin Long) are strong and powerful, with all other birds bowing to their command (the original text is missing a character, which should be 'strong'). The original commentary states: these two birds can devour and subdue all other birds, occupying the position of the military commander, demonstrating great military strength and achieving great victories in battle."

How could one expect that a dog could transform into a heavenly鳌 and turn around to capture wolves and leopards. The original commentary states: "Liu Jin Gou" (the Dog of the Hour of the Turtle) when falling in the position of Si or Chou can transform into a heavenly鳌; when falling in the heavenly palace or the position of boiling water, it transforms into a lion, turning around to devour other birds and beasts. All matters divined are favorable, but it is unfavorable to go west.

The swallow transforms into a great鹏 and a phoenix, and in reverse, it devours the dragon and the jiāo. The original commentary states: "The Wei swallow" falls in the You position, transforming into a great鹏, capable of subduing all beasts; however, when it falls in other palace positions, it should be considered separately, and cannot be universally regarded as auspicious.

Foxes usually eat wild chickens, but once the wild chicken becomes an eagle, it ends up harming the fox's life (the two missing characters are inferred from the self-commentary as 'the stomach of the earth chicken transforms into an eagle, thus able to eat the fox,' so the character should be 'chicken'). The original text's self-commentary states: 'the昴day chicken' falls in the亥position and transforms into a dragon, and in the卯position transforms into a phoenix. 'The stomach earth chicken' falls in the午position and transforms into an eagle, thus being able to eat the fox. This clearly shows that strength and weakness depend on transformation, not just on the original form.

The ox is usually able to subdue crows, but once the crow transforms into a great eagle, it will turn around and eat the ox. The original commentary states: "When the ox (Jin Niu) falls on the position of Wu, it has the ability to eat crows; if it falls on the position of Xu, it is called 'rhinoceros losing its horn.' When it falls on the position of Yin, it coincides with 'Bi Yue Wu' transforming into a great eagle, and the ox is then eaten by it."

Therefore, the principle that the superior controls the inferior and the inferior controls the superior is consistent and clear: if my side's animal is high in position and has a favorable position, while the enemy's general is low in position and in a state of weakness and confinement, then my army will defeat the enemy. Conversely, if the enemy's general, though low in position and weak, is in a favorable position and can change, while my side's animal, though high in position, is in a state of weakness and confinement, has lost order, and cannot change, then the enemy will definitely defeat my army. Therefore, victory and defeat are not fixed; success and failure are determined by fate (「休因」means 「休囚」).

It is unavoidable that the strong eat the weak, and the weak sometimes can also eat the strong; things are always changing and unpredictable (two 「□」 characters are missing in the original text, both should be read as "strong"). The original text notes: animals like the犴, wolf, tiger, leopard, dragon, and蛟 although strong in themselves, if they are in a weak and confined state, and unable to find a proper place to settle, their transformed forms become small, thus turning into the weak side. On the other hand, animals like the "Heart Mansion Fox", "Stomach Earth Chicken", "Wei Bird", "Lou Metal Dog", and "Mao Sun Chicken" although small in themselves, if they are in a prosperous and strong state, their transformed forms become large, thus turning into the strong side, and can even eat tigers and subdue dragons. In short, when using the star animals, the key is to recognize their current prosperity and decline, strength and weakness, rather than their nominal rank and status.

If the divination results in "the pig entering the tiger's den," the pig cannot avoid injury (the two missing characters in the original text are supposed to be "豕" according to the author's own note). The original text explains: the term "豕" refers to the bird of the Encampment mansion, and "虎穴" refers to theYin Palace. If the Encampment mansion is calculated to fall in the寅 position, this is called "the pig entering the tiger's den." Whenever a pig meets a tiger, how could it remain unharmed? Therefore, whenever divining the stars associated with animals, one must understand the distinction between favorable, unfavorable, conflicting, and harmful positions.

A monkey entering a snake's den will surely be bitten by the snake. The original commentary states: 'Monkey' refers to the bird of the Zi Xu mansion. 'Snake's den' refers to the Si palace. If the Zi Xu mansion falls in the Si position, it is like a monkey colliding with a snake, and it will certainly be harmed by the snake.

Furthermore, when a strong host encounters a declining position, there are many changes in the situation (the original text has a missing character here, which should be 'strong'). The original commentary states: for example, a dragon turtle falling into the positions of巳 and 午, which are positions of boiling water and fire, or tigers and leopards falling into the positions of 丑 and 未, which are positions of fields and pastures, or encountering positions such as decline, failure, death, and extinction, which have no vital energy, even though they are strong in themselves, they will instead become weak.

Weak stars, if they meet a prosperous place, can result in many affairs being successfully accomplished (the character in the original text is missing; according to the self-commentary, it should be '望', meaning 'expectation' or 'hope'). The original text self-commentary states: for instance, 'Heart Mansion', 'Wei Mansion', 'Wei Earth Rooster', and 'Mao Sun Chicken' are all weak in themselves, but if they appear in a palace that is favorable and capable of transformation, they can turn into strength, thus most affairs can be accomplished.

The Assignment of Day and Night Animals, Hidden Lights, Hidden Cuts, and Void

There are a total of sixteen day birds, which hide at night and are active during the day; there are twelve night birds, which hide during the day and are active at night. The original text notes: the day birds are the constellations Dou, Niu, Wei, Kui, Lou, Wei, Mao, Bi, Zi, Ce, Jing, Gui, Liu, Xing, Zhang, and Shi; the night birds are the constellations Jiao, Kang, Di, Fang, Xin, Wei, Ji, Nu, Xu, Bei, Yi, and Chen. If you want to capture someone during the day, it is best if the person belongs to the night birds, because the night birds hide during the day; if you want to capture someone at night, it is best if the person belongs to the day birds, because the day birds hide at night. In this way, the person will not know where to go and will certainly be captured by me.

Dragons and snakes can emerge and take on responsibilities upon encountering the Awakening of Insects — the "Neck mansion" and "Next Fire Snake" constellations only gain strength during spring and summer. Whether they can change depends on the current season. However, the "Well Wood Dog" and "Wei Moon Swallow" bring calamity once the Autumn Equinox arrives. The original text notes: these animals are vigorous and active during the Spring She period, but their vitality wanes and they bring misfortune during the Autumn She period, because they are out of season. However, the Well mansion regains strength again in winter.

If it also conflicts with the hidden bright stars, then it is not only unfavorable for seeking official positions and receiving appointments, but also greatly inauspicious for military campaigns and arranging troops. The original commentary states: the so-called hidden bright stars refer to the four constellations of Kangle, Niu, Lou, and Gui, which are metal constellations corresponding to the star Tai Bai, the golden star in the sky. Whenever the day or hour coincides with these four constellations, it is called 'hidden gold'. All affairs are忌讳 (to be avoided) by it, except when the reverse bird (fān qín) is obtained with the Kangle or Lou constellations, which is considered relatively favorable.

As for the凶 (misfortune) of the伏断 (hidden cut) falling in the native's own palace, the offense becomes even more severe. The original text notes: thethe so-called伏断 refers to situations such as encountering theEmptiness mansion (Emptiness mansion) on a子日 (day of Zi) or子时 (hour of Zi), or encountering theDipper mansion (Dipper mansion) on a丑日 (day of Chou) or丑时 (hour of Chou), and so on; these are all considered evil palaces. There is a poem that records this: on子日, theEmptiness mansion is to be avoided; on丑日, theDipper mansion is to be avoided; on寅日, theEncampment mansion is to be avoided; on卯日, theGirl mansion is to be avoided; on辰日, theWinnowing Basket mansion is to be avoided; on巳日, theRoom mansion is to be avoided; on午日, theHorn mansion is to be avoided; on未日, theExtended Net mansion is to be avoided; on申日, theGhost mansion is to be avoided; on酉日, theTurtle Beak mansion is to be avoided; on戌日, theStomach mansion is to be avoided; on亥日, theWall mansion is to be avoided. Each of the twelve branches is paired with one mansion, and when they are in their proper position, it is called伏断. The evil of伏断 is extremely凶, and it is only suitable for military operations such as cutting off roads or guarding dangerous passes.

If the hour is exactly during an empty hour, even if a good bird is encountered, it is still necessary to be cautious in choosing it. The original text notes: the term "empty hour" refers to the heavenly stem of the hour being Jia or Yi. The almanac says: "interrupted empty hour, a great taboo for traveling; if one leaves the house during this hour, all affairs will be unfavorable." The "Military Overview" says: when doing something during this hour, it is like a person encountering a great flood on the way, unable to cross. The "Bird Book" says: when selecting an hour, if the heavenly stem is Jia or Yi and it coincides with any of the twelve constellations of Dishi, Fang, Xin, Xu, Shi, Shi, Kui, Lou, Mao, Zui, Gui, Liu, and Shen, it is considered as cutting off the path and unable to proceed. Even if the hour is combined with a good pattern of the odd door, it will still lead to obstruction and difficulty, and it must not be used. This is a great taboo for military affairs.

If a palace encounters punishment and harm, it should be carefully distinguished between reality and illusion. The original commentary states: punishment and harm refer to the knife and the cauldron of fire. The classic text says: the positions of Shen and You are the knife and the cauldron, which are the palaces where land animals suffer punishment and injury, and where birds are startled and wounded. Only the 'Well Wood Dog' in these positions is harmless. The positions of Si and Wu are the cauldron of fire, which are the places where birds suffer wounds and bleed, and where land animals face extreme danger (the missing character in the original text should be 'extreme'), and only the 'Lou Metal Dog' in these positions is auspicious. Other animals in these positions are considered evil palaces. Only when the enemy's general star is in these evil palaces can our army achieve a great victory.

The Interpretation of the Auspicious Animals: General Judgment

Calculating the lesson pattern and celestial stars involves principles that are extremely subtle, but they should be used in conjunction with the Six壬 system, ultimately relating to the yao (lines) of the I Ching. The original commentary states: when divining human affairs, after the禽 star has settled in its proper position, one should also examine the size of the transformed yao, weigh its importance, and then determine fortune or misfortune.

In general, using both the Six壬 (Liuren) and the Yanyin (Astrological Birds) systems together allows for mutual verification of auspicious and inauspicious outcomes. When calculating the Yanyin stars, the daily bird (日禽) is the main focus. First, determine the hourly bird (时禽), checking whether it harmonizes or conflicts with the general star (将星). Then, identify the 'my side general' (番将) and 'opponent's general' (到将), examining which bird is more favorable and which is stronger, thus enabling a judgment. However, although the daily and hourly birds are shared between both sides, they should be able to generate the general and harmonize with it, and also generate and harmonize with me. The hourly bird, although being the offspring of the general, is considered excellent if it can also generate me.

As for the mystery of the "strange birds" (yi qin), they can foresee calamity and fortune. The term "strange birds" does not refer to the daily bird (ri qin) or the hourly bird (shi qin) themselves, but rather involves first extracting the daily bird from the original element, then deriving the hourly bird from the daily bird. Once the hourly bird is obtained, one uses the qi to determine the opposing general and the allied general, comparing which side is stronger ("shu □" where the missing character is likely "qiang"). Further, one proceeds to "lock and anchor" (suo po), examining which side has a better position. Using this method to predict fortune and misfortune, by analogy and deduction, the judgment will be accurate and without error. Kong Yi said: once the day is fixed, the hour is sought, and auspiciousness or misfortune is already apparent. This method is easy to understand, but if spoken of carelessly, it will never be effective. Those who truly understand the secret formula can, with one calculation, reach the level of divine insight.

This is what is meant by deriving the subsequent duties from the preceding禽星, used to support the overall framework and headings of the entire text—above is the summary of the main principles of the "Yan Qin Fu," and the following sections are the detailed items.

Names of the Twenty-Eight Mansions

The names of the seven constellations in the eastern direction are: "Jiao Mu Jiao" (Jiao mansion, belonging to the Wood element, its animal is a dragon-like creature), "Kang Jin Long" (Kang mansion, belonging to the Metal element, its animal is a dragon), "Di Tu He" (Di mansion, belonging to the Earth element, its animal is a weasel), "Fang Ri Tu" (Fang mansion, belonging to the Sun, its animal is a rabbit), "Xin Yue Hu" (Xin mansion, belonging to the Moon, its animal is a fox), "Wei Huo Hu" (Wei mansion, belonging to the Fire element, its animal is a tiger), and "Ji Shui Bao" (Ji mansion, belonging to the Water element, its animal is a leopard). The names of the twenty-eight mansions are composed of three parts: the name of the mansion comes first, followed by the seven luminaries (Wood, Metal, Earth, Sun, Moon, Fire, Water) it is associated with, and the last character represents the animal it symbolizes. The entire system of animal relationships and their interactions are derived from these three layers of connections.

The animal names for the seven northern mansions are: "Dipper Wood Crab" (Dipper mansion, belonging to wood, its animal is crab; the missing character is inferred from the Dipper mansion entry as "crab"), "Ox Metal Ox" (Ox mansion, belonging to metal, its animal is ox), "Girl Earth Bat" (Girl mansion, belonging to earth, its animal is bat), "Emptiness Day Mouse" (Emptiness mansion, belonging to day, its animal is mouse), "Rooftop Moon Swallow" (Rooftop mansion, belonging to moon, its animal is swallow), "Encampment Fire Pig" (Encampment mansion, belonging to fire, its animal is pig; the missing character is inferred from the Encampment mansion entry as "pig"), "Wall Water Armadillo" (Wall mansion, belonging to water, its animal is water deer).

The animal names for the seven stars of the western sector are: "Kui Wood Wolf" (Kui mansion, belonging to wood, its animal is wolf), "Lou Metal Dog" (Lou mansion, belonging to metal, its animal is dog), "Wei Earth Pheasant" (Wei mansion, belonging to earth, its animal is pheasant), "Mao Sun Chicken" (Mao mansion, belonging to sun, its animal is chicken; the missing character in the original text is inferred from the entry on Mao mansion "□ has five virtues" and old interpretations to be "chicken"), "Bi Moon Crow" (Bi mansion, belonging to moon, its animal is crow), "Zi Fire Monkey" (Zi mansion, belonging to fire, its animal is monkey), "Shen Water Ape" (Shen mansion, belonging to water, its animal is ape).

The禽 names of the seven mansions in the Southern direction are: "Well Wood Beast" (Well mansion, belonging to Wood, its禽 is the beast, a sacred animal resembling a tiger), "Ghost Metal Sheep" (Ghost mansion, belonging to Metal, its禽 is the sheep), "Willow Earth Badger" (Willow mansion, belonging to Earth, its禽 is the badger), "Star Sun Horse" (Star mansion, belonging to Sun, its禽 is the horse), "Extended Net Moon Deer" (Extended Net mansion, belonging to Moon, its禽 is the deer), "Wing Fire Snake" (Wing mansion, belonging to Fire, its禽 is the snake; "Wing" is the same as "Yi"), "Chariot Water Worm" (Chariot mansion, belonging to Water, its禽 is the earthworm). The seven mansions in each of the four directions—East, South, West, and North—combine to form the twenty-eight禽.

High Bird

"The Bi Yue Wu" can subdue all water birds, land birds, and various flying birds. The crow is a spiritual bird among birds and can transform into a great鹏, so it holds the highest position among flying birds. "Jing Mu An" can subdue all mountain birds and water birds. It goes up the mountains to devour tigers and leopards, and goes down to the water to eat dragons, and is the master of the twenty-eight constellations.

"The Horn mansion" and "The Neck mansion" can subdue all water birds and various flying creatures, because the dragon is the supreme being of the water creatures, capable of summoning clouds and causing rain, and transforming to ascend to heaven. "The Tail Fire Tiger," "The Jar Water Leopard," and "The Kui Wood Wolf" can subdue all mountain birds, because the tiger, leopard, and wolf are fierce beasts of the mountains, and all other animals fear them. The above seven birds are collectively known as "High Birds." When our side obtains the High Birds and also has a strong foothold, we will gain the upper hand.

The star of the domesticated animals devours.

The relationship among the celestial birds involves mutual consumption, which must be clearly understood. In terms of strength and power, none surpass the 'Kui Wood Wolf', 'Wei Fire Tiger', and 'Ji Water Leopard'. Additionally, there are two more birds, the 'Jing Wood Ox' being the most esteemed. These birds are capable of capturing and subduing the other constellations, and all the constellations submit to them.

"The Horn mansion and the Neck mansion can swallow the Wei mansion and eat the Ox mansion; when the Xu mansion and the Female Earth bat meet a snake, they will run away upon hearing the sound; the Wu Wood wolf can swallow the Ghost Metal sheep, the Room mansion, and deer and獐 (the character for 'zhang' is missing in the original text, but according to the meaning it should be 'deer', i.e., Zhang Moon deer); when tiger and leopard meet ox, the ox will die."

"The 'Water Monkey,' 'Fire Monkey,' and creatures like bats and rats are most afraid of encountering the 'Metal Dog' (the missing character in '猿猴□鼠' is from the original text); foxes, horses, deer, and sheep all avoid falling into the tiger's mouth; the 'Wood Ox' can swallow even dragons and tigers before it has started traveling; the 'Wood Wolf,' 'Horn Mansion,' and 'Water Leopard' are equally unable to withstand it."

The armadillo and the chicken can both eat earthworms (the character in the original text for "armadillo and □" is missing; according to the following text, it should be "chicken"). When earthworms meet chickens or pheasants, the birds of the Chariot mansion constellation will die. If a chicken meets a snake, it will also suffer injury. Similarly, one must also worry about snakes eating the intestines of pheasants and chickens. The original text has multiple missing characters, and the meaning can only be inferred by analogy.

"The Zi Fire Monkey" and "Cen Water Monkey" are always afraid of wolves and tigers; "Bei Water Armadillo" and "Shi Fire Pig" must also be cautious of "Wei Moon Bird"; when tigers, wolves, and leopards meet "Wei Moon Bird" and the bird transforms into a great鹏, the situation will change; even "Jing Wood Dog" will certainly suffer defeat when encountering the鹏 transformed from the bird."

The animals "Shi Huo Shi" (Room Fire Pig), "Liu Tu Zhang" (Willow Earth Badger), "Bi Shui Yu" (Wall Water Armadillo), "Zhang Yue Lu" (Zhang Moon Deer), and "Gui Jin Yang" (Ghost Metal Sheep) will inevitably get injured whenever they encounter fierce beasts like "Hu" (Tiger), "Bao" (Leopard), and "Kui Mu Lang" (Kui Wood Wolf), regardless of whether they are advancing or retreating stars or any time of day.

"The Room mansion" and "the Metal Dog" are the animals associated with these mansions. When tigers, leopards, or wolves appear, their lives are inevitably endangered. However, when encountering certain animals and sheep, one should also take precautions (the character in "but when encountering □ sheep" is missing in the original text). It is necessary to carefully consider each case and not generalize.

"The seven animals, 'Niu Jin Niu' (Ox of the Metal Ox), 'Wei Yue Yan' (Wei Mansion Swallow), 'Wei Tu Zhi' (Stomach Earth雉), 'Mao Ri Ji' (昴 Day Rooster), 'Nu Tu Fu' (Nu Earth Bat), 'Fang Ri Tu' (Room Mansion Rabbit), and 'Xu Ri Shu' (Xu Mansion Rat), most fear the arrival of 'Bi Yue Wu' (End of the Month Bird). If the animals such as Zhang, Lu, Ji, and Yang, along with 'Bi Shui Yu' (Wall Water Armadillo), encounter 'Lou Jin Gou' (Enclosure Metal Dog), they will all lose."

A certain bird can eat snakes, while the Heart Mansion can catch the Well Wood Ox; the Root Mansion can be opposed by the Dipper Wood Crab, and the Room Mansion can overcome the Constellation Wolf. The Wei Mansion transforms into a great鹏, causing the snake to die; once the snake turns into a dragon, the ox will not survive. In summary, the mutual consumption and eating depends on strength and weakness. Therefore, choosing the right day and time requires careful calculation.

Seven Generals' Head

The seven elements each have their own commanding stars: the first element uses the Emptiness mansion, the second uses the Legs mansion, the third uses the Net mansion, the fourth uses the Ghost mansion, the fifth uses the翌 mansion, the sixth uses the Root mansion, and the seventh uses the Winnowing Basket mansion. These seven mansions are the ones corresponding to the seven Jiazi days. Each element cycles through one commanding star, and after seven elements, the cycle repeats from the beginning.

Seven Officials of the Twenty-Eight Generals

The mnemonic for the seven yuan and the twenty-eight generals is: the first yuan uses the four generals of Xu, Zhang, Shi, and Zhen; the second yuan is Kui, Kang, Wei, then Feng Su; the third yuan is Bi, Wei, Can, and also includes Dou Su; the fourth yuan is Gui, Nu, Xing, and Wei; the fifth yuan is Yi, Bi, Jiao, and Lou; the sixth yuan is Di, Mao, Xin, and "Zi Hu Hou"; the seventh yuan is Ji and Jing, with Niu and Liu accompanying them. These are the generals corresponding to the seven yuan. Each yuan has four generals, making a total of twenty-eight generals, which matches the number of the twenty-eight constellations.

The mnemonic says: In the method of calculating the seven elements and their corresponding animals, each element has four generals. With seven elements, there are twenty-eight generals in total. Each general governs fifteen days, so four generals together govern sixty days, which completes one element. For example, the first element starts with "The Xu" as the first general, continuing until the "Wuyin" day "Star Mansion," covering fifteen hosts. Then it changes to "Jimao Zhang Yue Lu" as the general, which is the qi general, continuing until the "Guisi" day "Wei Yue Yan," covering fifteen days. Then it changes to "Jiawu Shi Hu Shi" as the general, continuing until the "Wushen" day "Yi Hu She," covering fifteen days. Then it changes to "Jiyou Zhen Shui Yin" as the general, continuing until the "Guihai" day "Bei Shui Yu," covering fifteen days—thus completing the sixty days of the first element.

Then the third cycle begins, starting with the day of Jiazi (甲子) with "Bi Moon Bird" as the general, continuing until the day of Guihai (癸亥) with "Jing Wood Ox" as the general, covering all sixty mansions.
