Four Pillars: born in the year of Dingmao, month of Bingwu, day of Bingwu, and hour of Gengyin; the big years in order are Yisi, Jiachen, Guimao, Renyi, Xinchou, and Gengzi. The day stem Bingwu is born in the month of Wu, and the year branch and hour branch are Mao and Yin. The metal Geng has no root, so it is left unused, and the pattern becomes "Inflaming Ascending." There is no earth in the chart to reveal elegance, so it is not favorable for academic success or literary achievements, and one must rise from the ranks of soldiers. When the Yimao big year comes, one is appointed to an official position; when the Renyi big year comes, one loses the position; when the Xinchou big year comes, one establishes military merit and is suddenly promoted to the position of Du Si; during the Xinchou big year, there is no strength in the transformation and generation of opportunities; when entering the Gengzi big year, it conflicts with the Wu branch's Yangren, and also meets the Jiazi flow year which double conflicts with Yangren, and one dies in the military.

The natural order of generation allows things to develop smoothly; however, when encountering the "hit god," there will be resistance. Original commentary: For example, wood generates fire, and fire generates earth. If they follow their natural sequence, they will naturally be harmonious. But if along the way they meet the "hit god," which prevents the natural generation, they will resist and show courage. Ren's explanation: When things should follow the natural order, they do so; when they should oppose, they do so. This way, their nature remains harmonious and smooth. For example, if wood is strong and fire comes to drain its energy, this is following the natural order; if earth then comes to guide its energy, this is generation, and it is not suitable to see metal and water, which are the "hit gods." If wood is weak and water comes to nourish it, this is a reverse generation, which is still following the natural order. If metal comes to assist water, this is generation within opposition, and it is not suitable to see fire and earth, which are the "hit gods." What I generate is considered following the natural order, and what generates me is considered opposing. When something is strong, it is suitable to follow the natural order; when it is weak, it is suitable to oppose. This way, the nature is correct and the emotions are harmonious. If the "hit god" appears, the strong will become bold and impetuous, while the weak will become timid and fearful. If the overall pattern is in harmony with the order of following and opposing, its nature is naturally peaceful. However, when the year or the decade of destiny meets the "hit god," it can become either too strong or too weak. This should be carefully examined.

Four pillars: Jihai year, Bingyin month, Jiayin day, Renshen hour; the big years in order are Yichou, Jiazi, Jihai, Renxu, Xinyou, Gengshen. The day stem Jiayin is born in the Bingyin month, where wood is strong and the fire stem Bing is visible, which is a favorable condition for growth and a bright and harmonious situation, hence the person is able to memorize things quickly. However, the hour pillar is affected by metal and water, which weaken the wood. The year stem Jihai is weak and cannot control the water. Moreover, the early years of life are in the northern water direction, which not only hinders academic success but also causes losses and injuries. When entering the Xinyou big year, the water becomes stronger, and the fire is combined and destroyed, leading to further problems.

Four Pillars: Gengyin year, Wuyin month, Jiawu day, Renshen hour; the big years in order are Jimao, Gengchen, Xinsi, Renwu, Guiwei, Jiashen. The day stem Jiawu is born in the寅month, with Wu earth appearing, and the寅and午forming a fire trinity, which is a favorable situation for growth, thus the person has a generous nature and an open mind. However, the hour pillar meets metal and water, which may cause some harm, leading to difficulties in passing exams despite hard study and many losses. In middle age, the big years are not favorable, making it hard to realize one's ambitions. Fortunately, the metal in spring is not strong, and fire and earth have roots, so both the body and the essential elements are not harmed, allowing the descendants to continue the family legacy.

The order of reverse generation, once encountering idle gods, will cause turmoil. Original commentary: For example, if wood is born in the month of Hai, encountering Xu, You, or Shen will cause a reversal of its vital energy, which is not in harmony with its nature; once it meets idle gods such as Si-You-Chou, it will definitely become violent and fierce. Ren Shi explained: What should be reversed should be reversed, and what should be harmonious should be harmonious, then the nature will be correct and the emotions will be harmonious. For example, if wood is extremely strong and water comes to generate it, this is a reverse generation; if metal comes to complete it, this is an assisting reverse generation, and it is not suitable to see Ji or Chou such idle gods. If wood is extremely weak and fire comes to guide its energy, this is a reverse; if earth comes to transform it, this is a reverse but in a harmonious way, and it is not suitable to see Chen or Wei such idle gods. Here, the concept of extreme strength and extreme weakness refers to following the principle of following strength or following weakness, not the meaning of moderate strength and weakness as mentioned by predecessors. When extreme strength meets idle gods, it will definitely become fierce; when extreme weakness meets idle gods, it will definitely be lenient. The same applies to the years and the ten thousands of years. Fire, earth, metal, and water follow this pattern accordingly.

Four Pillars: born in the year Renzi, month Xinhai, day Jiayin, and hour Jiazi; the great years in order are Renzi, Guichou, Jiayin, Yimao, Bingchen, and Dingsi. The day stem Jiayin is born in the month Xinhai, where water is strong and wood is firm, reaching its peak. A little Xinhai metal follows the flow of water, not opposing its nature, thus being stable and harmonious, which perfectly matches the sequence of reverse generation; it is even more favorable that there is no earth in the chart to contradict the nature of water. In the early years, moving north, he entered the examination hall as a candidate and passed the examination. In the years Jiayin and Yimao, following the strong god, he was appointed as a county magistrate in a famous area. In the year Bingchen, there was still a harmonious relationship, although he was demoted, he avoided serious misfortune. In the year Dingsi, encountering a disruptive god, he went against the natural order and eventually died.

Four Pillars: Renyin year, Xinhai month, Jiayin day, Jisi hour; the great years in order are Renzi, Guichou, Jiayin, Yimao, Bingchen, Dingsi. The day stem Jiayin is born in the year and month of Yin and Hai. The metal Xinhai follows the water without contradicting the wood nature, which conforms to the order of mutual assistance. The concern is the hour Jisi, which is an idle element, and the fire and earth clash and control, contradicting its nature, and also fails to control the water. At the beginning of the Renzi great year, the ancestors' inheritance was abundant; during the Guichou great year, the idle elements in the earth branch formed a group, leading to many punishments and losses; during the Jiayin and Yimao great years, both people and wealth increased; but upon entering the Bingchen great year, fire and earth were strengthened, causing injury to wife and children, and a fire disaster, the person himself suffered from madness, and committed suicide by drowning.

Four Pillars: born in the year of Wuxu, month of Dingsi, day of Jiayin, and hour of Jisi; the great years in order are Wuwu, Jiwei, Gengshen, Xinyou, Renxu, and Guihai. The day stem Jiayin is born in the month of Dingsi, where the fire element is in command and dominant. Although the day stem sits on the禄 branch of寅, its vital energy has already been exhausted. The fire is strong and the wood is burned. It is favorable to have earth to lead and guide its energy, which is exactly the principle of extreme decline leading to weakness. The early years Wuwu and Jiwei follow the nature of fire and earth, resulting in a wealthy ancestral legacy and also obtaining the title of a scholar. The year Gengshen goes against the nature of fire and also drains the earth's energy. By the year Guihai, the fire is violently disturbed, leading to death.

When the Yangming energy meets hidden metal, it becomes blocked and leads to much worry and restlessness. The original commentary says: the寅, 午, and 戌 are called 'Yangming'; if there is a metal element hidden within them, it results in a state of being gloomy and troubled. Ren Shi explains: the energy of Yangming is usually smooth and unimpeded; if it meets damp earth containing hidden metal, the fire cannot overcome the metal, and the metal cannot generate water, leading to sorrow and depression. One experiences few successes and many disappointments, resulting in a blocked mood and a cold spirit, with frequent worries. Only by undergoing a purely阴 and turbid phase, and by guiding the nature of metal and water, can one fulfill their wishes.

Four Pillars: born in the Year of Yichou, Month of Bingxu, Day of Bingwu, and Hour of Gengyin; the big years in order are Yiyou, Jiashen, Guiwei, Renwu, Xinsi, and Gengchen. The day stem is Bing fire, and the earth branches have Yin, Wu, and Xu, forming the Triple Harmony of fire. The food god is strong and flourishing, the true god is used, and the pattern is the best. In the early years, Yiyou and Jiashen lead the flow of the hidden metal in Chou, resulting in a prosperous family business and also obtaining the title of a scholar. However, the earth branches form a fire pattern, the heavenly stem Geng metal is in the place of death in the hour, and there is a rival stem competing, so the useful god cannot be used. The hidden metal Xinhua is stagnant and blocked within Chou. Therefore, he failed the autumn examination ten times; also, during his early years, he traveled through the southern direction, experiencing three fires, four losses of wife, and five losses of children. In his later years, he became lonely, poor, and destitute, with only himself remaining.

Four Pillars: born in the year of Renxu, month of Bingwu, day of Bingyin, and hour of Jichou. The day stem Bingyin is born in the month of Wu, which forms a fire trinity in the earth branches, indicating a strong yang energy. However, due to the presence of劫财 (robber wealth) andYangren (sharp weapon), the壬 water has no root and thus cannot be used effectively, making this case worse than the previous one. The hour branch Chou contains hidden Xin metal, which is suppressed and stagnant. Fortunately, the big運 (major cycle) proceeds through the Northwest, a place of yin and turbid energy, leading to a position in the Ministry of Personnel, earning wealth of over ten thousand; rising through an unconventional path to become a state governor, achieving both fame and fortune, with all matters proceeding smoothly and easily.

In a situation of yin turbidity, hidden fire is contained, leading to suppression and blockage rather than expression. The original commentary states: "You, Chou, and Hai are considered 'yin turbidity'; if there is fire hidden within them, it cannot emit its brilliance and tends to be obstructed." Ren Shi explains: Yin and darkness inherently find it difficult to become vigorous; if wet wood contains fire and yin energy is excessive, the hidden fire cannot rise, resulting in a condition of damp obstruction. Therefore, one may desire quick results but fail to achieve their goals, be indecisive in matters, and tend to be suspicious in nature. Only by following a pure path of yang brightness and allowing the flow of wood and fire energies can clarity and smoothness be achieved.

Four Pillars:Guihai year, Xinyou month, Guichou day, Renxu hour; the big years in order are Gengshen, Jiwei, Wuwu, Dingsi, Bingchen, Yimao. This is Chen Bangyan's birth chart.癸 water is born in the middle autumn month of酉, with the earth branches酉, 亥, and 丑 all present, which belongs to the yin turbid type; the heavenly stems have three waters and one 辛 metal, and also meets 戌 hour, which is yin turbid with hidden fire; the wet wood in 亥 cannot produce fire without flame. Fortunately, the big years proceed to the southeast yang bright land, which guides and unblocks the hidden energy inside, thus enabling him to hold the top rank (pass the imperial examination as a second place winner), and realize his lifelong aspirations.

Four Pillars: Dingchou year, Xinhai month, Guihai day, Guihai hour; the successive big years are Gengxu, Jiyou, Wushen, Dingwei, Bingwu, Yisi. There are three Hai in the earthly branches plus one Chou, and two Gui in the heavenly stems plus one Ding, indicating extreme yin and turbidity. The Ding fire in the year stem has no place to hide, being floating without actual fire; the甲 wood in Hai also cannot assist it. Fortunately, the big years proceed towards the southern Yangming direction, and meet the flow years Bingwu and Dingwei, thus achieving successive success in the imperial examination, and reaching the position of Inspector General.

Four Pillars: Xinchou year, Jihai month, Xinyou day, Guisi hour; the big years in order are Wuxu, Dingyou, Bingshen, Yiwei, Jiawu, Guisi. The earth branches Chou, Hai, You are all present. The month stem is moist earth, Jiti, and also meets Xinjin and Guishui, which are yin and turbid energies. The hour branch Si fire could warm the whole chart, and the overall atmosphere seems more beautiful than the previous one. But it is unknown that Si, You, and Chou form a metal trinity, which injures the wood in Hai. The Si fire and Chou earth, which should be wealth and official positions, instead become枭印 (nourishing the劫财 (robber wealth)). Even if there is a fire and earth fortune, it cannot be used, and in the end, he became a monk.

A person with a strong Yangren (Yang Ren) formation can display their power when they are strong, but becomes timid and hesitant when weak. A person with a clear and pure pattern of Wounding Official (Shang Gan) can be humble and harmonious, but becomes fierce and strong when the pattern is turbid. If the Useful God (Yong Shen) is too numerous, the person's character is fickle and changeable. If the hour branch is weak and rootless, the person's actions are incomplete and lack consistency. Original note: When discussing the Yangren formation, any instance of Yangren, for example, if the fire is the Yangren, and the heavenly stem reveals the fire (Bing or Ding), and the earthly branch forms a trine with Wu or Yin, or is supported by Mao, it is considered strong. If the fire is revealed as Ding, it is called 'exposing the Yangren'. If it is opposed by Zi (water), it is called 'battle'. If it is harmonized by Wei (future), it is called 'concealed'. If it is further weakened by Hai water, or by壬癸 water, or by Chou or Chen earth, it is considered weak. When discussing the Wounding Official pattern, if the earthly branch forms a Wounding Official pattern, and the heavenly stem reveals the Wounding Official deity without repetition or interference from the Food Official (Shi Shen), and if the person's strength is strong with wealth or weak with the Seal (Yin), it is called 'clear'. The opposite is 'turbid'. In summer, if wood meets water, and in winter, if metal meets fire, it is both clear and refined, leading to great wealth and honor.

Ren Shi explains: When the Yangren is formed in a pattern, if it is strong, the person tends to be proud and arrogant, and if able to fight, will rely on power and display authority. If weak, they tend to be suspicious and timid, and when combined with others, they may act in a false manner and be different from others. For example, if the day master is Bing fire, then Wu is the Yangren. If the heavenly stem reveals Ding fire, it is called 'exposing the Yangren'. If the earthly branches form a combination with寅 and 戌, or if there is Mao to assist, or if the heavenly stem reveals Ji or Yi, or if there is Bing fire to support, these are considered strong. If the earthly branches meet Zi, which is a clash, or meet Hai or Shen, which are controlling, or meet Chou or Chen, which are releasing, or if the heavenly stem reveals Ren or Gui, which are controlling, or if there is Wu earth to release, these are considered weak. If the earthly branches meet future combinations or meet Si to assist, it is considered balanced.

The use of the Wounding Official must distinguish between true and false: a true Wounding Official occurs when the body is weak and there is an imprint, without the presence of wealth stars, which is called 'clear'; a false Wounding Official occurs when the body is strong and there is wealth, without the presence of an imprint, which is called 'noble'.the so-called 'true' means that the Wounding Official is in the month's stem or the branches form a Wounding Official pattern and it appears in the heavenly stem;所谓 'false' means that the entire column is filled with siblings and thieves, without an official star to restrain it, even if there is an official star, its strength is not enough to overcome it. Whether the column contains a food god or a wounding official, either can be used as the useful god, even if there is none, it is still considered good, but it is not advisable to see an imprint, as the presence of an imprint would destroy the wounding official and bring misfortune. Those who have a clear Wounding Official and use it well are respectful, polite, harmonious, and have excellent talents and deep knowledge; those who do not are arrogant, proud, strong-willed, and disrespectful, using their strength to dominate the weak, and seeking favor from the powerful. If there are too many useful gods, they lack perseverance and have a tendency to change; if the hour branch is weak and rootless, they are doubtful and indecisive, starting with diligence but ending with laziness. In summer, wood needs water, but water must first have metal to have a source; in winter, metal meets fire, but fire must have a strong body and wood to have a flame, thus wealth and honor are certain. If summer water lacks metal or winter fire lacks wood, it is just a dry and barren situation, and fame and fortune become empty talk.

Four Pillars: Bingyin year, Jiawu month, Bingshen day, Renchen hour; the big years in order are Yiwei, Bingshen, Dingyou, Wuxu, Jihai, Gengzi. The Bing fire is born in the Wu month, with the Yang Blade forming a complete structure, and also meets the mutual support of Yin and Shen, which form a harmonious relationship. Furthermore, there is the help of a similar element, indicating a strong body. It is most favorable to have the hour of Renchen, as the Ren water is revealed, which is even more excellent. The Shen and Chen hours release the fire and generate metal, forming a harmonious water structure, thus achieving the image of "both water and fire are in order." Therefore, he passed the imperial examination early, his official rank continuously rose, and he held important military and judicial responsibilities, possessing great power of life and death.

Four pillars: Bingyin year, Jiawu month, Bingyin day, Renchen hour; the big years in order are Yiwei, Bingshen, Dingyou, Wuxu, Jihai, Gengzi. This chart uses the same eight characters as the previous one, but the positions are reversed: in the previous case, the day's main element was sitting on the Shen metal, which generated and supported the Ren water, creating a harmonious relationship; in this case, the Shen metal is far away in the year pillar, distant and blocked, and is contested by the same element and wealth-depleting elements. When the Shen year comes, it supports the seven killing element, and when meeting the Jiazi year, it forms a killing situation and conflicts with the Yangren, leading to success in the local examination. After that, the official career is blocked, differing greatly from the previous case, because the Shen metal cannot connect with the Ren water energy.

Four Pillars: Wuzi year, Wuwu month, Bingchen day, Wuxu hour; the big years in order are Jiwei, Gengshen, Xinyou, Renxu, Guihai, Jiazi. The day stem is Bing fire, with Wu in the month, which is the main element. The Yangren is strong and in season, but Zi water conflicts with it and Chen earth drains it, so its weakness is evident. There are three Wu earths in the sky stems, which steal the essence of the day stem. Adding the big years which go through the Northwest metal and water, the Yangren is further attacked. Thus, success in official positions is difficult, and wealth is hard to accumulate. It was only in the Jia Yin year when the fire trine was formed and the thick earth was opened up that he was listed in the special imperial examination.

Four pillars: Gengwu year, Yiyou month, Gengwu day, Renwu hour; the big years in order are Bingxu, Dinghai, Wuzi, Jichou, Gengyin, Xinmao. This is the birth chart of the middle hall. Geng metal is born in the middle autumn month of You, with the heavenly stem of Wu fire appearing three times in the earth branches, the You metal Yangren is restrained by the fire, and there is no earth in the five phases, so its weakness is evident. Fortunately, the壬water in the hour supports it, revealing its elegance, so it is exceptionally intelligent and holds the greatest power in its time. However, the ethereal stem of Yi wood reveals itself, being attached to the wealth star and competing with the day stem for union, so throughout his life he is fond of wealth and does not know when to step back. But the wealth star is located in the Yangren position, and the day stem is in the official star's land: the official can control the Yangren, and wealth will certainly generate the official, and the official is the symbol of the ruler. Therefore, when the big year Gengyin comes, metal meets its end, and the official is supported and assisted, his wealth will eventually belong to the ruler. Thus, wealth is a harmful thing, just as greed cannot be removed, like a moth flying towards a lamp, only after burning itself will it stop, like a monkey addicted to wine, only after being whipped with blood will it stop, at that time regret is too late.

Four pillars: Jichou year, Bingzi month, Renchen day, Wushen hour; the big years in order are Yihai, Jiaxu, Guiyou, Renshen, Xinwei, Gengwu. This is a birth chart with the official star and seven deadly stars both appearing and rooted in the earth branches, fully relying on the earth branches forming a water trinity to support the Yangren. It can be said that both the deadly stars and the Yangren are strong. Unfortunately, there is no wood in the chart, so the refined qualities cannot be expressed, leading to a humble origin. Fortunately, the Bing fire resists the cold and thaws the frozen state, so the person is broad-minded and peaceful, originating from the military. The Guiyou year supports the Yangren and strengthens the body, leading to an official position. The Renshen year is exactly what is called "nine promotions in one year," reaching the highest rank. When entering the Xinwei year, the Yangren is restrained, and by the Dingchou year, the fire and earth become strong, also overcoming the Zi water, resulting in death.

Four Pillars: born in the year of Xin Mao, month of Yi Wei, day of Jia Zi, and hour of Geng Wu. The major years of destiny in order are Jia Wu, Gui Si, Ren Chen, Xin Mao, Geng Yin, and Ji Chou. This is the destiny of Ji Zhongtang. The day stem Jia Zi is born in the month of Wei and hour of Wu, which is the pattern of "Summer Wood meets Water" and the pattern of the official being supported by the seal. What is favorable is that the wood of Mao is able to overcome the earth of Wei, so the water of Zi is not harmed, and can go to overcome the fire of Wu. This is like having a disease and receiving the right medicine, removing the turbid qi and leaving the clear qi. The heavenly stems Jia, Yi, Geng, and Xin each form their own gate, not being considered as mixed, but instead becoming the auspicious deities that nourish the seal. Even more remarkable is that the major years proceed through the Northeast region of water and wood, with the body and use being in harmony, leading to a smooth career throughout life.

Four Pillars: Gengwu year, Renwu month, Jiaxu day, Gengwu hour; the big years in order are Guiwei, Jiashen, Yiyou, Bingxu, Dinghai, Wuzi. The Jia wood is born in the month of Wu, with three Wus in the earth branches and one Xiu, resulting in intense fire and dry earth, with the official star acting recklessly and strongly. The month's dry water, Ren, has no root and relies entirely on Geng metal to generate water, hence the continuous success in imperial examinations. The reason for the stagnation in his official career is that all the earth branches are fire, with no connection from the heavenly stems of metal and water, so the wood has no place to take root. Although the origin god is abundant, the foundation is insufficient.

Four pillars: Jiazi year, Bingzi month, Gengchen day, Gengchen hour; the big years in order are Dingchou, Wuyin, Jimao, Gengchen, Xinsi, Renwu. This is the birth chart of Zhou Shilang. Geng metal is born in the middle winter month of Zi, with cold and frozen water and metal; the fire in the month's heavenly stem, Bing, is supported by the wood in the year's heavenly stem, Jia, thus dispelling the cold and frozen atmosphere, which is exactly what is called "winter metal needs fire." However, Zi and Chen both form a water trine, making the day's heavenly stem definitely weak. Therefore, the useful god is not Bing fire but Chen soil, further supported by the same heavenly stem Geng metal. Therefore, when the big years reach Gengchen and Xinsi, his official rank rises continuously.

Four Pillars: Ding Si year, Ren Zi month, Xin Si day, Ding You hour; the big years in order are Xin Hai, Geng Xu, Ji You, Wu Shen, Ding Wei, Bing Wu. This is the destiny of Xiong Zhongcheng (named Xuepeng). Xin metal is born in the middle of winter in the Zi month. Although the metal is cold, it is not extremely cold, and it meets water which drains its strength. The entire chart relies on the You hour to support the day's ruler. The Si and You form an alloy of metal to assist it. The heavenly stem Ding fire is only used to resist the cold and melt the frozen state, not as the useful god. The useful god must be You metal, so when the big years move to earth and metal, his career flourishes; but when he enters the Ding Wei big year, things go wrong. Generally, in winter, metal prefers fire, which is used to warm the entire chart, not as the useful god.

Six Relations Theory · Twenty-Five, Illness

The Five Phases in harmony mean that there will be no calamities in one's life.

A person whose Five Phases are in harmony will never suffer misfortune or illness throughout their life. The original commentary explains that 'Five Phases harmony' does not merely mean that all Five Phases are present without deficiency, nor does it mean that they mutually generate without mutual control. Rather, it means that what should be complete is allowed to be complete, what should be deficient is allowed to be deficient, what should generate is allowed to generate, and what should control is allowed to control. Only in this way can it be called 'harmony', and such a person will have no misfortune or illness throughout their life.

Ren Shi said: The Five Phases are manifested in heaven as five colors, namely blue, red, yellow, white, and black; on earth as five substances, namely wood, fire, earth, metal, and water; and in the human body as five internal organs, namely liver (the original text mistakenly writes 'stomach', which should be 'liver'), heart, spleen, lung, and kidney. Humans are the most intelligent beings among all things, receiving the full essence of the Five Phases. Those visible on the face are modeled after the five colors of heaven; those contained within the internal organs are modeled after the Five Phases of earth, so the human body is a miniature heaven and earth. Therefore, each internal organ is paired with a腑 (organ), and all腑 belong to yang, so they are paired with Jia, Bing, Wu, Geng, and Ren; all internal organs belong to yin, so they are paired with Yi, Ding, Ji, Xin, and Gui. (This passage has many errors in transmission; the phrase '各酏五地之服阳' should be '各配五行之阴阳'.)

If the Five Phases are not in harmony, or if they are excessive or deficient, then disorders such as wind, heat, dampness, dryness, and cold may arise. In such cases, the five flavors must be used to restore balance, and there is still room for resolution. The five flavors are sour, bitter, sweet, pungent, and salty. Sour belongs to wood and excessive consumption harms tendons; bitter belongs to fire and excessive consumption harms bones; sweet belongs to earth and excessive consumption harms flesh; pungent belongs to metal and excessive consumption harms qi; salty belongs to water and excessive consumption harms blood—this is the mutual control relationship between the five flavors. Therefore, the original text of "Di Tian Mei" states, "When the Five Phases are in harmony, there will be no calamities throughout one's life."

The Five Phases in the Eight Characters need to be harmonized, just as the Five Phases of the internal organs need to be harmonized. The harmonization of the Five Phases in the Eight Characters depends on the years and the ten-thousands; the harmonization of the Five Phases in the internal organs depends on the five flavors. The term "harmony" refers to the process of resolving conflicts. If the Five Phases are in harmony and the five flavors are moderate, illness and misfortune will naturally disappear. Therefore, the harmony of the Five Phases is not considered harmonious merely because they are mutually generating without controlling each other or complete without any deficiency. The key to harmony lies in releasing the overly strong element and dispersing the excess energy. When the excess of the strong element is released, the weak element gains benefit, and this is called "harmony."

If one forcefully tries to suppress the strong element, it will be outnumbered and only provoke its nature: the strong element will not be harmed, but the weak one will suffer first (the term '反家伤' should be read as '反受伤'). Therefore, when the strong element is excessively dominant, it is suitable to release it rather than suppress it; only when it is not overly dominant is suppression appropriate. For a weak element that has a root, it is suitable to support it; but if it has no root at all, it is better to harm it directly. Generally, in a birth chart, there should be one element that is truly effective (the term '有田力' should be read as '有力'), with proper control and transformation arranged, which will ensure a life free from calamities. It is not considered good just because all five elements are present and complete, nor is harmony achieved merely by mutual generation without mutual control.

The four pillars are year pillar Guiwei, month pillar Jiayin, day pillar Wuxu, and hour pillar Gengshen; the big years are successively Guichou, Renzi, Xinhai, Gengxu, Jiyou, Wushen, Dingwei, and Bingwu. TheWu Earth is born in the寅month, where wood is strong and earth is weak. Fortunately, the day's main pillar is sitting on the戌earth, which gives it a root and strength. This is sufficient to use the Geng metal to control the seven deadly woods, the Jia wood. Moreover, the Geng metal is sitting on the申branch, which is its禄position, so its strength is enough to cut down the wood. This is exactly what was mentioned earlier, "when something is not excessive, it is suitable to control it." Although the year's dry branch, Gui water, helps the seven deadly woods, it is restrained by the未earth, so it cannot help the wood. The good things get support, the bad things are removed, and the five phases are in harmony. In addition, all the big years do not contradict the main body and its use, so this person lived to be ninety years old, with good hearing and sight, able to move freely, full of descendants, and possessing fame, fortune, happiness, and longevity, with no disasters or illnesses throughout his life.

The four pillars are year pillar Jia Yin, month pillar Geng Wu, day pillar Wu Yin, and hour pillar Jia Yin; the big destiny runs through Xin Wei, Ren Shen, Gui You, Jia Xu, Yi Hai, and Bing Zi in order. In the chart, the seven killing Jia wood appears five times (two Jia heavenly stems and three Yin earthly branches), while only one Geng metal is present on Wu fire without any root. This is exactly what is called "a weak god without root, which should be removed; a strong god that is excessive, which should be released." The Wu fire happens to harmonize this relationship: it is fortunate that Wu fire is in command and timely, and the entire chart has no water at all, so even if the destiny runs into metal and water, it will not destroy this structure. When the destiny runs into wood and fire, fame and fortune will be achieved together. This is because the "god" is abundant, and the vital energy naturally arises from it, so this person will have wealth, honor, longevity, and a prosperous life without misfortune, with many descendants who also achieve great success.

The four pillars are year pillar Jiazi, month pillar Bingzi, day pillar Guihai, and hour pillar Yimao; the big years are Dingchou, Wuyin, Jimao, Gengchen, Xinsi, and Renwu. The day stem is Gui water, and both the year and month pillars are seated on Zi water, indicating an extremely strong water force. Most fortunate is the Yimao hour, which allows the essence of this strong water to be released, allowing the internal vitality to manifest externally. There is an excess of wood energy, and the floating fire also finds its use. This is called "sufficient essence leads to vigorous spirit." It is also fortunate that there is no earth or metal in the chart. If there were earth, it would drain the fire and yet be unable to contain this vast expanse of water, leading to conflict with the wood. If there were metal, it would injure the wood and further intensify the flood of water. Therefore, this person has no calamities throughout his life. When he is over eighty or ninety years old, his appetite becomes better, his hearing and sight remain sharp, his steps are steady, and people think he is only in his fifties. He achieves both fame and fortune, and has many descendants.

When one's vital energy is chaotic, they tend to have many illnesses throughout their life.

A person with disordered blood and qi tends to be sickly throughout their life. The original commentary explains that 'disordered blood and qi' does not merely refer to situations where fire overcomes water or water overcomes fire; any instance where the five phases' energies are reversed or out of order, and where the energies cannot flow smoothly upwards and downwards or communicate properly, is called 'disorder', indicating that such a person will be prone to illness all their life.

Ren Shi said: The phrase "blood and qi are disordered" refers to the Five Phases being reversed and not flowing smoothly. In the Five Phases, water governs blood; in the human body, what flows through the meridians is blood. The pericardium governs blood, so it connects with the Hand Jueyin and Foot Jueyin meridians. The heart belongs to Ding fire, the pericardium governs blood, and the bladder belongs to Ren water; Ding and Ren combine, so the heart fire can descend to meet the kidney water. When Ding and Ren combine, they transform into wood, thus the spirit and qi become abundant, achieving the mutual generation of "water and fire in harmony" (Ji Ji hexagram 63), allowing the blood and meridians to flow smoothly and thus no illness occurs. Therefore, the most valuable aspect of an eight-character birth chart is when something that is being overcome instead receives support, and when there is adversity, it instead becomes favorable. This is considered beautiful.

In reverse, if there is conflict between the left and right, or mutual control between above and below, and where things should be smooth they instead encounter resistance (the original text says '喜逆逢顺', which logically should be '喜顺逢逆'), such a situation arises: when fire is too strong, water dries up and fire burns wood instead; when water is too strong, earth is eroded and water submerges metal; when earth is too strong, wood is broken and earth dulls fire; when metal is too strong, fire becomes weak and metal damages earth; when wood is too strong, metal is depleted and wood drains water. This is the principle of the Five Phases being reversed and mutually controlling each other. If a person's八字 (eight characters) falls into these situations, they will inevitably face many troubles and illnesses.

The four pillars are year pillar Bingshen, month pillar Yiwei, day pillar Dingwei, and hour pillar Gengxu; the big years are in sequence Bingshen, Dingyou, Wuxu, Jihai, Gengzi, and Xinchou. Ding fire is born in June, and the soil of Wushen and Xuxu are dry. They cannot obscure the fire nor generate metal. The strength of Bing fire is sufficient to burn Yi wood and injure Geng metal, so the soil becomes even drier and cannot be released. The hidden壬water in Shen metal is dried up by the heat, and the body's vital energy and qi inevitably dry up, so he suffers from "phlegm fire" in his early years — a condition where virtual fire burns up body fluids and phlegm-heat accumulates internally. When he reaches the Hai big year, a little Hai water is insufficient to counteract the fire in the whole chart, and instead it nourishes wood and supports fire, like a drop of water in a cartload of fire, making the fire even more intense, and finally leading to coughing up blood and death.

The four pillars are year pillar Renyin, month pillar Dingwei, day pillar Bingshen, and hour pillar Jiawu; the big years are Wushen, Jiyou, Gengxu, Xinhai, Renzi, and Guichou. The fire is born in the month of Wei and at the hour of Wu. The heavenly stem of the year, Ren water, has no root. The metal of Shen is too far away to generate water, and it is further weakened by the conflict with Yin wood and the theft by Wu fire. Metal governs the lungs, so the Shen metal is injured, leading to a further loss of lung energy. Moreover, the combination of Ding and Ren produces wood, which supports the fire, making the heart fire even more vigorous. The kidney water inevitably dries up, so he suffers from seminal emission and also has phlegm and cough. When he reaches the Xiu year, Yin, Wu, and Xiu form a fire trinity, further destroying the metal of the lungs and drying up the water of the kidneys, eventually leading to blood vomiting and death.

The four pillars are year pillar Jia Chen, month pillar Bing Yin, day pillar Bing Yin, and hour pillar Ren Chen; the big years are Ding Mao, Wu Chen, Ji Si, Geng Wu, Xin Wei, and Ren Shen. In the month of Yin, wood is in its prime, so the fire Bing is supported by wood. The earth Chen is originally damp earth, capable of holding water, but it is overcome by fire Bing and wood Yin. Earth governs the spleen and stomach, so the spleen and stomach are injured. Since the earth is injured, it cannot produce metal, so the metal lung naturally perishes. With too much wood, the water is drained, and the kidney water also dries up. When the Geng year comes, wood is strong and metal is lacking, so metal and water appear together, and the three elements of wood, fire, and metal all become rampant, leading to death from coughing up blood. In this case, wood and fire are in harmony, so one should follow their trend rather than oppose it, so water Ren is considered a hostile god. Therefore, the early years of Ding Mao, Wu Chen, and Ji Si did not cause any harm.
