Charting guides: Da Liu Ren Chart Calculator, Jin Kou Jue Chart

Divination for searching for someone who has fled: Whether searching for a missing scholar, relative, or escaping servant, it is favorable if the day stem's virtue (de) overcomes the criminal god (xing shen), making it easier to find the person. Conversely, if the criminal god overcomes the day stem's virtue, it becomes difficult to trace the person. The day stem's virtue (de shen) is as follows: Jia in Yin, Yi in Shen, Bing in Si, Ding in Hai, Wu in Si, Ji in Yin, Geng in Shen, Xin in Si, Ren in Hai, Gui in Si. The day branch's virtue (zhi de) is as follows: Zi in Si, Chou in Wu, Yin in Wei, Mao in Shen, Chen in You, Si in Xu, Wu in Hai, Wei in Zi, Shen in Chou, You in Yin, Xu in Mao, Hai in Chen.

To determine the surname of a runaway servant, observe where the two lunar generals, "From Kuai" and "He Kuai," fall in the palace. For example, if "From Kuai" falls on the earth plate's Hai or Zi, which belong to the water element, then the servant's surname will contain water, such as Jiang or Hong. Why is this used to determine the surname? Because You represents a servant, and the lunar general named "From Kuai" corresponds to You. Xu represents a slave, and the lunar general named "He Kuai" corresponds to Xu. To determine the surname of a slave, follow the same method as above.

To trace the location of theft or adultery, if the divination forms a "Hidden Chant" (伏吟), the person is nearby. To determine the exact distance, look at where "戌" (Xu) is placed on the Earth Plate. Use the method of counting the upper and lower layers. For example, if "戌" remains on the Earth Plate's Xu palace, it is a Hidden Chant, and the person is nearby. If "戌" is placed on "子" (Zi), count backwards from Xu to Zi: exclude Xu itself, count from You to Zi, which is ten counts; then from Zi, exclude Zi itself, count from Hai to Xu, which is two counts. Convert these counts into distance: the ten counts from You to Zi represent one hundred li, and the two counts from Hai to Xu represent two li, totaling one hundred and two li.

Divination on bandits and thieves

Divination for thieves: To determine where the thief is hiding, look at the position of the official ghost. Lost property and stolen money are also determined through the thief. If the wealth hexagram falls into an empty or hidden position, the stolen goods are difficult to recover. To know the direction the thief is fleeing, look at the earthly branch of the earth plate where the Black Tortoise is located. For example, if the Black Tortoise is on the Zi branch, which belongs to the north, the thief is heading north; if it is on the Hai branch, which belongs to the northwest, the thief is heading northwest, and so on. If the "suspended rope evil" falls on the day stem or day branch, or if the Black Tortoise is on top of the suspended rope evil, the thief entered through the window or door. The method to determine the suspended rope evil is as follows: in January, May, and September, it is on the卯 branch; in February, June, and October, it is on the子 branch; in March, July, and November, it is on the酉 branch; in April, August, and December, it is on the午 branch.

The Black Tortoise riding the Post-horse indicates that the thief entered by breaking through walls. The method of determining the Post-horse is as follows: on days of申, 子, and 辰, the Post-horse is in 寅; on days of 寅, 午, and 戌, the Post-horse is in 申 (the original text mistakenly says '占'); on days of 亥, 卯, and 未, the Post-horse is in 巳; on days of 巳, 酉, and 丑, the Post-horse is in 亥. If the Black Tortoise is in the night division, the thief has already crossed over gates and bridges and fled far away. The night division refers to the six palaces of 酉, 戌, 亥, 子, 丑, and 寅. If the Black Tortoise is in the day division, the thief cannot hide and will soon be discovered. When the丁神 and the Post-horse appear together, the thief must have fled very far. If the Sun shines upon the Black Tortoise, the thief can be captured.

The sun moves retrograde through the months: in the first month it is in the亥 (Hai) position, in the second month in戌 (Xu), third month in酉 (You), fourth month in申 (Shen), fifth month in未 (Wei), sixth month in午 (Wu), seventh month in巳 (Si), eighth month in辰 (Chen), ninth month in卯 (Mao), tenth month in寅 (Yin), eleventh month in丑 (Chou), and twelfth month in子 (Zi). The following sentence is a mnemonic for the solar transition into each palace, but the wording has some errors and omissions. Its general meaning is that the sun changes palaces at the time of the middle solar terms. For example, the middle solar terms are Rain Water, Vernal Equinox, Grain Rain, Lesser Fullness, Summer Solstice, Greater Heat, Limit of Heat, Autumnal Equinox, Frost Descent, Lesser Snow, Winter Solstice, and Greater Cold, which correspond in order to the above. When reciting, one should refer to the table above for comparison.

Gou Chen overcomes Xuan Wu, indicating the thief will be caught. The deity of the beginning of the ten-day period riding on Xuan Wu signifies the thief is wandering around, eventually being captured. When He Kuai (戌) crosses over Xuan Wu, the thief is difficult to capture. To find the thief, one should look in the direction indicated by You Du according to the day stem: Jia day is in Chou, Yi day is in Zi, Bing day is in Yin, Ding day is in Si, Wu day is in Shen, Ji day is in Chou, Geng day is in Zi, Xin day is in Yin, Ren day is in Si, and Gui day is in Shen.

The official ghost is riding on life qi, indicating the thief will leave this time but return again. The appearance of the sons' hexagram can drive away the thief. If the official ghost meets punishment and clash, the thief will be exposed and captured. The initiating transmission represents the thief, which is the thief himself; the middle transmission represents the stolen goods, and the final transmission represents the captor. If the sovereign year and month builder overcome the black tortoise, the thief will be caught within the year and month. If the day branch injures the black tortoise, the matter can be resolved on the same day and hour. If the four lessons and three transmissions together do not show the black tortoise, one should not make arbitrary conclusions. If the nobleman moves in the correct direction and the black tortoise is hidden, the thief is hard to track. If the person's own year branch is riding on the black tortoise, it indicates theft by a relative. If the official ghost is riding on the black tortoise, it indicates a case of theft.

When the divination forms a 'Hidden Chant' and the Nobleman moves in the correct direction, the thief is found one position before the Day Branch. If the Nobleman moves in the reverse direction, the thief is found one position after the Day Branch. When the divination forms a 'Return Chant', the thief is located in the direction opposite to the Black Tortoise. If the First Transmission is in harmony with the Black Tortoise, the thief is safe and unmoving. If there is a conflict within the Black Tortoise's spirit, it indicates that accomplices are fighting over stolen goods. If the Black Tortoise appears in the Three Transmissions along with the Day Stem and Day Branch, the thief will return again. The branch where the Black Tortoise is located in the Three Transmissions is where the thief resides. If the branch spirit of the personal year is capable of overcoming the Black Tortoise, the thief will be captured soon. If the Black Tortoise combines with the Vermilion Bird, White Tiger, Gou Chen, or Teng Snake, the thief will be caught by officials. If the Black Tortoise is overcome by the upper god in the Three Transmissions and the thief also overcomes the lower god, the thief will be exposed soon. If the Nobleman moves in the correct direction, the thief is still on the run; if the Nobleman moves in the reverse direction, the thief cannot hide and will be revealed.

To calculate how many miles the thief has escaped, take the branch corresponding to the Black Tortoise and count the number of branches from that branch to the branch where it is located on the Earth Plate. For example, if the Black Tortoise is on 'Zi' and is located on the Earth Plate's 'Chen', count from 'Zi' to 'Chen', which is four positions, so it is judged as four miles or forty miles, and so on. If using the method of multiplying upper and lower numbers: the Black Tortoise is on 'Zi' and is placed on the Earth Plate's 'Chen'. First, start counting backwards from 'Zi' without counting 'Zi' itself, from 'Hai' to 'Chen', which gives eight positions; then start counting backwards from 'Chen' without counting 'Chen' itself, from 'Mao' to 'Zi', which gives four positions. The use of these two numbers is explained in the next section. Additionally, there are two other deities: Wangshen, which is in 'Si' in the first, fifth, and ninth months, in 'Yin' in the second, sixth, and tenth months, in 'Hai' in the third, seventh, and eleventh months, and in 'Shen' in the fourth, eighth, and twelfth months; Tianmu, which is in 'Chen' in spring, in 'Wei' in summer, in 'Xu' in autumn, and in 'Chou' in winter.

Now regarding the calculation of distance: multiply the branch corresponding to the Black Tortoise with the branch of the Earth Plate it is added to, counting upwards and downwards. For example, if the Black Tortoise is on Zi and added to the Earth Plate on Chen, first count backwards from Zi to Chen, excluding the original position, which gives eight positions; then count forwards from Zi to Chen, excluding the original position, which gives four positions. Thus, the distance can be determined as either 84 li or 48 li, depending on the situation. If determining direction, since Chen is in the Southeast, look for the location in the Southeast direction. As for the appearance of the hidden person's location, observe which branch the Black Tortoise is added to on the Earth Plate: if it is on Hai or Zi, it is near water; if on Yin or Mao, it is near trees; if on Si or Wu, it is near a furnace; if on Shen or You, it is near metal and iron; if on Chen, Xu, Chou, or Wei, it is on a hill or mound.

If you want to determine what kind of animals are in the area of a thief's hideout, you should refer to the animals associated with each of the twelve earthly branches. For example, the branch 'Chou' corresponds to cattle, and 'Wei' corresponds to sheep. However, this is just a way of expressing the idea more specifically, and one should not rigidly stick to the term 'animals.' Why? Because animals like cattle, sheep, pigs, and dogs are more likely to be actual things, while dragons and tigers may not really exist. When encountering dragons or tigers, one should instead compare them with names, shapes, or symbols that include the words 'dragon' or 'tiger.' The judgment here relies entirely on flexibility and adaptability. Additionally, one should also consider where the 'official ghost' falls in the hexagrams, to determine the type of place where the thief resides. For instance, if the 'official ghost' is on 'Shen' and is placed on the 'Chen' position, 'Shen' belongs to metal and 'Chen' represents a mountain, combining to form 'Golden Mountain.' This could refer to a place name, a mountain name, the name of a temple or monastery, or a person's name. Any name that includes the term 'Golden Mountain' would count, and similar reasoning applies to other cases.

Divination on crops and sericulture

Divination for farming and sericulture: The timing of sowing is determined by the Three Transmissions. If the prosperous and strong energy is in the First Transmission, it is suitable to sow early. If it is in the Middle Transmission, it is suitable to sow in the middle season. If it is in the Final Transmission, it is suitable to sow late. If any of the transmissions fall into Kongwang or are accompanied by punishment and harm, they should not be used. Furthermore, according to the Five Phases, if the metal energy is strong, it is suitable to sow barley and wheat. If the water energy is strong, it is suitable to sow rice. If the fire energy is strong, one should beware of drought and it is suitable to sow millet and beans. If the earth energy is strong, then all kinds of crops are suitable.

Divination for domestic animals

Divination for domestic animals: each of the twelve earthly branches corresponds to specific animals—Zi corresponds to the rat, Chou to the ox, Yin to the tiger and cat, Mao to the rabbit and fox, Chen to the dragon, Si to the snake and fish, Wu to the horse and deer, Wei to the sheep and eagle, Shen to the monkey, You to the chicken and pheasant, Xu to the dog and wolf, Hai to the pig and bear. The mnemonic says: the ox (Chou) and the sheep (Wei) are most favorable when encountering the Azure Dragon (Qinglong), while the骡 (Mao) and the pig (Hai) are most unfavorable when meeting the White Tiger (Baihu); if the qi they are riding is prosperous and strong (wangxiang), it is auspicious, but if it falls in the critical or tomb positions, it is inauspicious. By following this, whether the domestic animals are thriving and multiplying can be clearly determined.

Two, the Six Yin Formula Rules

When starting a Six壬 lesson, first fix the Earth Plate's twelve branches, which remain stationary. The second step is to determine the current month's General: for example, after the rainwater in January, the Month General is 'Dengming' (亥). Place亥 on the hour of the lesson. If the event occurs at the 'Chou' hour, place the Heaven Plate's 亥 on the 'Chou' position of the Earth Plate, and arrange the remaining eleven branches in order. The Heaven Plate moves in a single direction, regardless of yin and yang or forward and backward. The third step is to determine the Nobleman based on the Day Stem of the day of the event. For example, if it is a 'Jia' day, the Yang Nobleman is at 'Chou', and during daylight hours (from 'Mao' to 'Shen'), use the Yang Nobleman at 'Chou' if the event occurs during the day. The Yin Nobleman for a 'Jia' day is at 'Wei', and during nighttime hours (from 'You' to 'Yin'), use the Yin Nobleman at 'Wei' if the event occurs at night. Therefore, if the event occurs at 'Mao' hour on a 'Jia' day, use the Yang Nobleman at 'Chou'; if it occurs at 'You' hour on a 'Jia' day, use the Yin Nobleman at 'Wei'.

As for the arrangement of the Twelve Heavenly Generals following the Nobleman, it is determined by the direction between the Heaven Gate (Heaven Plate's Hai position) and the Earth Gate (Earth Plate's Si position): if the Nobleman falls on the Earth Plate's Hai, Zi, Chou, Yin, Mao, and Chen positions, the Twelve Heavenly Generals are arranged in a clockwise order; if the Nobleman falls on the Earth Plate's Si, Wu, Wei, Shen, You, and Xu positions, the Twelve Heavenly Generals are arranged in a counterclockwise order. Here, when it says 'the Nobleman is on the Earth Plate,' it refers to the Nobleman on the Heaven Plate being located on one of the six positions on the Earth Plate, not that the Nobleman itself belongs to the Earth Plate. When it says the Nobleman 'moves forward or backward,' it refers to the direction of the twelve branches on the palm, either clockwise or counterclockwise, not that the Twelve Heavenly Generals themselves move forward or backward. As for the term 'use,' it refers to divination matters.

After setting up the four lessons, the first lesson is determined by the day stem. Using the day stem, refer to the "Diagram of Same Stem and Branch" to find the branch where the day stem resides. For example, if the day stem is Jia, Jia resides in Yin. Then look at the branch on the Earth Plate at Yin position; if it is Zi, place Zi above the day stem, which is the first lesson. Next, use this Zi branch to set the second lesson. Check the branch on the Earth Plate at Zi position; if it is Chou, place Chou above Zi, which is the second lesson. The third lesson is determined by the day branch. For example, if the day branch is Zi, use Zi to set the third lesson. Check the branch on the Earth Plate at Zi position and place it above Zi. The fourth lesson is determined by the branch added on the day branch. Then check the branch on top of this added branch and set it in the same way as the second and third lessons. After setting up the four lessons, proceed to set up the three transmissions, the method of which is detailed in the following diagrams and sections.

This is a table showing the correspondence between the twelve Month Generals, the solar terms, and the Earthly Branches. Each general governs two solar terms, and when the sun moves into a new palace, the general changes. Between Great Cold and Start of Spring, the "Shenhou" (Zi) general is used; between Winter Solstice and Minor Cold, the "Dají" (Chou) general is used; between Light Snow and Major Snow, the "Gongcao" (Yin) general is used; between Frost Descent and Start of Winter, the "Taichong" (Mao) general is used; between Autumn Equinox and White Dew, the "Tian Gang" (Chen) general is used; between Heat-Dissipating and Start of Autumn, the "Taiyi" (Si) general is used; between Dog Days and Start of Autumn, the "Shengguang" (Wu) general is used; between Summer Solstice and Minor Heat, the "Xiaojí" (Wei) general is used; between Grain Full and Grain in Ear, the "Chuansong" (Shen) general is used; between Rain Water and Awakening Insects, the "Congkuai" (You) general is used; between Vernal Equinox and Clear and Bright, the "Heqiu" (Xu) general is used; between Rain Water and Awakening Insects (originally written as "Jingzhi"), the "Dengming" (Hai) general is used.

The Five Phases attributes of the Twelve Heavenly Generals are as follows: "Nobleman" belongs to Earth, "Teng Snake" belongs to Fire, "Vermilion Bird" belongs to Fire, "Liu He" belongs to Wood, "Gou Chen" belongs to Earth, "Azure Dragon" belongs to Wood, "Tian Kong" belongs to Earth, "White Tiger" belongs to Metal, "Tai Chang" belongs to Earth, "Black Tortoise" belongs to Water, "Tai Yin" belongs to Metal, and "Heavenly Empress" belongs to Water. When interpreting a divination, the fortune or misfortune and the interactions of the Heavenly Generals must be determined based on these Five Phases attributes. Below is the positioning of the two noblemen for day and night: the Yang Nobleman (used during the day) is located at the Ox hour on a Jia day, the Rat hour on a Ji day, the Rat hour on a Yi day, the Ox hour on a Geng day, the Dog hour on a Bing day, the Monkey hour on a Xin day, the Dog hour on a Ding day, the Snake hour on a Ren day, the Ox hour on a Wu day, and the Snake hour on a Gui day. The Yin Nobleman (used at night) is located at the Goat hour on a Jia day, the Monkey hour on a Ji day, the Monkey hour on a Yi day, the Goat hour on a Geng day, the Rooster hour on a Bing day, the Ox hour on a Xin day, the Rooster hour on a Ding day, the Rabbit hour on a Ren day, the Goat hour on a Wu day, and the Rabbit hour on a Gui day.

This is the "Dry and Branches in the Same Place Chart," which indicates which earthly branch each of the ten heavenly stems resides in: Bing and Wu reside in Si, Ding and Ji in Wei, Geng in Shen, Xin in Xu, Ren in Hai, Gui in Chou, Jia in Yin, and Yi in Chen. This chart is specifically used to determine the day stem in a divination lesson. For example, on a Jia day, Jia resides in the Yin position. When setting up the lesson, you look at which heavenly branch is riding on the Yin position of the earth plate, and add that branch to the Jia stem. If the Yin position is riding the Zi branch, then Zi is added to Jia; if it is Chou, then Chou is added to Jia; if it is Yin, then Yin is added to Jia. The other stems are treated in the same way.

Three, Re-examining the Divination Case

The "Re-examination Lesson" indicates initial confusion followed by eventual benefit. Its formation condition is that among the four lessons, there is only one instance where a lower god directly贼克 (steals the strength of) its upper god, which is called "Re-examination." Even if there are two or three other instances where the upper god克 (overcomes) the lower god, they are all disregarded. Alternatively, if the same lower god贼克 (steals the strength of) two or three upper gods, it still takes the one it directly贼克 (steals the strength of) as the initiating transmission. If there are two or more instances of lower gods贼克 (stealing the strength of) upper gods, it is called "Confusion Above and Below," and it does not form a Re-examination Lesson. For example, if the day stem is Yi, and Yi's palace is occupied by "Chen," Yi wood克 (overcomes) Chen earth, which is a case of lower贼克 (stealing the strength of) upper. In this case, Chen is taken as the initiating transmission. If there are two Chens above, or branches like Chou, Wei, or Xu which are all earth branches, the same principle applies: take the branch that is directly贼克 (stealed by) and is above it as the initiating transmission. Any other upper gods that may克 (overcome) the day stem below are also disregarded. In summary, the Re-examination Lesson is formed by taking the branch that is directly贼克 (stealed by) as the initiating transmission.

Re-examining the divination case: Divination for the Sixth Month (Jia) (Dingchou year, fourth month, Yiyou day)

In the year of Dingchou, in the fourth lunar month after the beginning of summer, the month general is "Congkui" (From Qu) placed on You (酉). The divination is made on the day Yiyou (乙酉) and at the hour Yiyou (乙酉). This falls within the Jiashen (甲申) decade, with the void in the hour of Wu (午) and Wei (未). The question is about "Liu Jia" (六甲), which refers to a woman's pregnancy. The lesson pattern is determined as "Chongshen" (重审), "Zhanguan" (斩关), and "Fuyin" (伏吟). The month general You (酉) is placed directly on the hour You (酉), with the heaven plate and earth plate in the same position and not moving, thus forming Fuyin. The four lessons are: the day stem Yi is placed in the Chén (辰) palace, with Chén on Chén as the first lesson; Chén on Chén again as the second lesson; the day branch You has You on You as the third and fourth lessons. The wood Yi is overcoming the earth Chén, which is "xia zhe shang" (下贼上). According to the method of Chongshen, Chén is taken as the initiating transmission. The three transmissions are: the first transmission is Chén (with the hidden stem Ren, riding on Gou Chen, representing wife's wealth), the middle transmission is You (with the hidden stem Yi, riding on Heavenly Empress, representing the day's ghost), and the final transmission is Mao (with the hidden stem Xin, riding on Azure Dragon, representing brother). The nobleman is located on Shen (申), and the twelve heavenly generals are arranged in reverse order. Thus, Gou Chen is on Chén, Heavenly Empress on You, and Azure Dragon on Mao.

Master Wu Shiqing explained: This pregnancy will certainly result in twins, one boy and one girl. The boy can be raised, but the girl will not survive. Why? The middle transmission 'You' is the fetal god for an Yi day, yet it is also a day ghost and carries death qi. This indicates the pregnancy is not of the main wife but a concubine. The final transmission 'Mao' is the fetal god for the day branch You metal, but it is accompanied by life qi. You belongs to the trigrams Dui, which represents a young girl; Mao belongs to the trigrams Zhen, which represents a young boy. Therefore, the boy will be born because his position at Mao is both the fetal god and the wife's wealth with life qi. The girl will die because her position at You is both associated with death qi and the day ghost.

Then he explained further: Why is酉 considered the fetal god for 乙 day? 乙 belongs to wood, and wood is born in 亥. Following from 亥, the fetal position falls exactly on 酉. Why is it said to carry death qi? In the fourth month, the dominant element is summer fire, and fire is born in 寅. Following the twelve transformations in order, when reaching 酉, it is exactly the death position, so 酉 is both the fetal god and carries death qi. Why is the final transmission 卯 considered the fetal god of the day branch? The day branch 酉 belongs to metal, and metal is born in 巳. Following from 巳, the fetal position falls on 卯. Why is 卯 considered life qi? Because the wood of 卯 can generate the fire of summer, which is the time of growth and development. The divination indicates a female, taking the middle transmission 酉 which belongs to the trigram 兑, and 兑 represents a young woman; the divination indicates a male, taking the final transmission 卯 which belongs to the trigram 震, and 震 represents a young man.

Re-examining the divination case: Liu Tuizhai, a high-ranking official, requested a divination (on Dingchou year August, Renyin day)

In the year of Dingchou, during the eighth lunar month after the White Dew, the month general is 'Taiyi' (Great One) on the巳 (Snake) branch. The divination is made on the day of Renyin and the hour of Guimao, which falls in the Jiawu decade (the empty branches are Chen and Si). A person named Liu Tuizhai, a high-ranking official, came to seek divination, asking, "What kind of person am I?" The lesson pattern is 'Chongshen' (Re-examination) and 'Zhanguan' (Cutting the Gate). The month general巳 is placed on the卯 (Rabbit) branch at the time of divination, so the heaven plate巳 covers the earth plate卯, and the rest of the branches are arranged accordingly. The four lessons are: the壬 (Water) is placed in the亥 (Rooster) branch, with the丑 (Ox) on the亥, forming the first lesson; the卯 (Rabbit) is on the丑, forming the second lesson; the寅 (Tiger) day branch has the辰 (Dragon) on it, forming the third lesson; and the辰 has the午 (Horse) on it, forming the fourth lesson. The three transmissions are: the first transmission is 辰 (Dragon), riding on 'Heavenly Empress' (Tianhou), which is earth overcoming water, representing the official ghost of the壬 day; the middle transmission is 午 (Horse), riding on 'Teng Snake' (Tengshe), representing the wife's wealth; the final transmission is 申 (Monkey), riding on 'Liuhe' (Six Harmonies), which is metal generating water, representing the official's seal. The nobleman is riding on the heaven plate巳, which is placed on the earth plate卯. The twelve heavenly generals are arranged in order, so the丑 (Ox) has Tai Chang, the卯 (Rabbit) has Tai Yin, the辰 (Dragon) has Tianhou, the午 (Horse) has Tengshe, and the申 (Monkey) has Liuhe.

Wu Shiqing interpreted: This is a "yin nobleman" who is close to the sovereign. The Tai Chang official star is riding on the Chou earthly branch and is over the day stem, and on top of the yin spirit there is also the night nobleman. The Tai Yin is also placed on top of the Chou position, so it is determined that this must be a noble lady who is always by the sovereign's side. The other person said: "This is exactly the princess. Then what is she doing? Please decide." Wu said: This must be a matter of requesting a hereditary title for her son - the final transmission Shen is both the god of imperial edict and the long life of the Ren water. The Liu He on this day is the heavenly general who governs children, and the two are in harmony, so it is known that it is a request for a hereditary title for the son. The other person asked again: "Will the imperial edict approve?" Wu answered: Among the three transmissions, the Liu He heavenly general has reached the heavenly gate, so the matter will certainly reach the supreme court; only regretfully the first and middle transmissions are in the旬 empty, so it will need to be requested twice before this hereditary title is approved. Later, it indeed turned out as he had predicted.

The phrase "yin jian ye gui" means that the position of the卯 (Mao) is itself a yin spirit, and on the earth plate, the position of Mao is occupied by the heaven plate's巳 (Si). Si is the nobleman for the day of Ren. When performing activities at night, it becomes the night nobleman. Since the yin spirit's position is occupied by the night nobleman, it is called "yin jian ye gui."

Re-examined Divination Case: A Death Row Prisoner Seeks Divination (Bingzi Year, Third Month · Yiwei Day)

In the year Bingzi, third month, after the Qingming festival, the month general is "River Chief" Xu. The divination is made on the day Yiwei at the hour Jimao, which belongs to the Jiawu decade (the empty hours are in Chen and Si). The person being divined has been sentenced to death and is now seeking a prediction about life and death. The lesson pattern is "Re-examination." The month general Xu is placed on the hour branch Mao, and the heaven plate is then arranged in order. The four lessons are: Yi is placed in the Chen palace, with the earth plate Chen carrying亥, forming the first lesson;亥 carries午, forming the second lesson; the day branch Wei carries寅, forming the third lesson; and寅 carries酉, forming the fourth lesson. The three transmissions are: the first transmission is午 (hidden stem Jia午, riding "Heavenly Void," representing son or grandson on the day Yi), the middle transmission is丑 (hidden stem Xin丑, riding "Heavenly Empress," representing wife or wealth), and the final transmission is申 (hidden stem Bing申, riding "Gou Chen," representing official or ghost). The nobleman is riding the heaven plate Zi and is placed on the earth plate Si. The twelve heavenly generals are arranged in reverse order, so亥 carries Teng Snake,寅 carries Tai Yin,酉 carries Liu He, and午 carries Tian Kong.

Wu Shiqing interpreted: This divination definitely indicates encountering imperial mercy and also a sign of being promoted again. Why? The day stem is "Hai," which is the heavenly grace deity of the third month, and the day branch is "Yin," which is the spring heavenly pardon deity. Moreover, "Zi" is both the tai sui of the Bingzi year and the nobleman of the Yi day; the water of "Zi" nourishes the wood of "Yi," becoming a life-saving star. Although the crime is severe enough for capital punishment, it can turn from misfortune to good fortune. Furthermore, the three transmissions show the heavenly general generating step by step, and the first and final transmissions subtly connect and protect the person's birth year of "Zi." It is thus concluded that someone will later recommend him. Later, he indeed achieved merit by pursuing bandits and was restored to his original position.

The two auspicious deities used in this divination are determined as follows. Heavenly Grace (皇恩) is located in the Earthly Branch Hai (亥) in March and September, in You (酉) in February and August, in Xiu (亥) in March and September, in Chou (丑) in April and October, in Mao (卯) in May and November, and in Si (巳) in June and December. Heavenly Pardon (天赦) is in Yin (寅) in spring, in Wu (午) in summer, in Shen (申) in autumn, and in Zi (子) in winter. This divination was cast in March, so Heavenly Grace is in Hai (亥); as it is the season of spring, Heavenly Pardon is in Yin (寅). The two deities fall precisely on the Day Stem and Day Branch.

Re-examining the divination case: Divination for official matters concerning academic success (Guiyou year, fourth lunar month, Guihai day)

In the year Guiyou, during the fourth month after the beginning of summer, the month general is "Congkui" on the酉 (you) branch. The divination is made on the day Guihai and the time Bingchen, belonging to the Jiayin decade (the empty branches are in the Zi and Chou). The person asking the question is currently in an official position, inquiring about his official rank and future prospects. The month general酉 is placed on the time branch, and the heaven plate is arranged in order. The four lessons are: the Gui (癸) is placed in the Chou branch, with the Wu (午) on the Chou branch, forming the first lesson; the Wu (午) has the Hai (亥) on it, forming the second lesson; the day branch Hai has the Chen (辰) on it, forming the third lesson; and the Chen (辰) has the You (酉) on it, forming the fourth lesson. The three transmissions are: the first transmission is Wu (午), hidden dry branch Wuwu, riding on the Teng Snake, representing wife and wealth on the Gui day; the middle transmission is Hai (亥), hidden dry branch Guihai, riding on the Tian Kong, representing brothers; the final transmission is Chen (辰), hidden dry branch Bingchen, riding on the Heavenly Empress, representing official ghosts. The nobleman is on the heaven plate in the巳 (si) and on the earth plate in the Zi, the twelve heavenly generals are arranged in order, so the Teng Snake is on the Wu, the Tian Kong on the Hai, the Heavenly Empress on the Chen, and the Gou Chen on the You.

Wu Shiqing interpreted the divination: Those who hold official positions in court who draw this divination must certainly resign. Why? The three transmissions have Heavenly Generals that mutually control each other. The day's virtue cannot restrain the criminal god, indicating that petty men will be favored while the virtuous retreat. Moreover, the Nobleman, the禄神, the wealth爻, and the Post-horse all fall into the旬空陷地, so how can there be a good ending? Additionally, the night Nobleman falls on the person's year, indicating a state of idleness and inability to take responsibility. After June, the day's禄 and the Heavenly Horse will both stir up his body and life, which marks the time when he will leave his post. Fortunately, the four tombs repeatedly appear above the Growth, indicating a sign of rising again from the East Mountain. Later, he indeed received approval to resign in June and returned home by riding the Post-horse.

Why is it said that the nobleman, the official's salary, the wealth hexagram, and the post-horse all fall into emptiness? Because "Si" is the nobleman for a癸 day, and it is placed on the "Zi" position. However, this lesson belongs to the Jiayin decade, and the empty positions of the decade are Zi and Chou. Therefore, the nobleman sits on an empty position. "Zi" is also the salary position for a癸 day. Since "Zi" is within the empty positions of the decade, the salary position also becomes empty. "Si" is also the daily virtue for a癸 day, and it is placed on the Zi position, thus falling into decline. Moreover, "Si" is also the post-horse for a Hai day, and it is placed on the Zi position as well. Thus, the salary, nobleman, virtue, and post-horse all meet emptiness and decline. As for the so-called "four burial positions covering the birth," the long life of the day for the Hai, Mao, and Wei days is in Hai, while the long life for a癸 day is in Shen, and its burial position is in Chen. Now, Chen is placed on Hai, which is the long life position of the day for a癸 day. Therefore, the burial position of the癸 day covers the long life position of the day, which is called "four burial positions covering the birth." This indicates that although there is failure, there is the possibility of recovery.

Re-examination divination: Determining the fortune of a capital punishment verdict (Bingzi year, second lunar month · Yiwei day)

In the year Bingzi, during the second lunar month after the spring equinox, the month general is "River Chief" Xu. On the day Yiwei and time Yimao, a divination is made. This falls under the Jiawu decade, with the void in the hours of Chen and Si. Since the death sentence has already been pronounced, the question is about the fortune. The month general Xu remains placed on the卯 position of the time. The heaven plate is the same as the previous lesson. The four lessons are: Yi is placed on Chen, with亥 on top as the first lesson;亥 has午 on top as the second lesson; the day branch Wei has寅 on top as the third lesson; and寅 has酉 on top as the fourth lesson. The three transmissions are: the first transmission is午, riding on "Tiankong" (child), the second transmission is丑, riding on "Heimei" (wife and wealth), and the third transmission is申, riding on "Gouchen" (official and ghost). The nobleman rides on the heaven plate Zi and is placed on the earth plate Si. The twelve heavenly generals are arranged in reverse order.

Wu Shiqing interpreted that by June a great pardon would occur, turning bad events into good ones. The reason is that the day stem's growth is at 'Hai', which is directly on the person's chart, and the spring heavenly pardon 'Yin' is also on the day branch. Moreover, the year stem 'Zi' serves as the nobleman for a 'Yi' day, transforming into an auspicious star that nourishes the person's destiny, so even though the crime is serious, it will be treated leniently. More pleasing is that the three transmissions' heavenly generals are successively generated, and the first and final transmissions secretly support the person's true destiny 'Wei'. This is a sign that he will later hold an official position. Later, he was indeed sent to the capital military camp in June to achieve merit and redeem his guilt, and by the year Xinsi he was promoted to the military commander of Gansu.

A few explanations of symbolic associations:亥 is the place of growth for 乙 wood, and the Heavenly Pardon in spring falls on寅. When the sovereign子 water generates the wood of乙 day, it becomes the star of grace. As for why it is determined that there is amnesty in June, it is because the Heavenly Pardon deity寅 is placed on the position of未, and未 corresponds to the sixth month in the twelve lunar months. Therefore, it should be in June.

Re-examining the divination case · Inquiring about a lawsuit (Dingchou year, July · Dinghai day)

In the year of Dingchou, during the month of July after the start of Chushu, the month general is 'Taiyi' (Great One) on the巳 (Snake) branch. The divination is made on the day of Dinghai and the hour of Jiachen, belonging to the Jiashen decade (the empty branches are in Wu and Wei). The question concerns a lawsuit. The lesson pattern is 'Chongshen' (Re-examination) and 'Jinru' (Advancing and Eating). The three transmissions are Shen, You, and Xu, proceeding in order, hence called 'Jinru'. The month general巳 (Snake) is placed on the hour of divination, and the heaven plate is arranged in order. The four lessons are: Ding is placed in the Wei branch, with Shen on Wei, forming the first lesson (Shen is multiplied by 'Liuhe' (Six Harmonies)); Shen has You on it, forming the second lesson (You is multiplied by 'Zhuque' (Vermilion Bird)); the day branch Hai has Zi on it, forming the third lesson (Zi is multiplied by 'Tianhou' (Heavenly Empress)); and Zi has Chou on it, forming the fourth lesson (Chou is multiplied by 'Taiyin' (Great Yin)). The three transmissions are: the first transmission is Shen (hidden stem Jiashen, multiplied by 'Liuhe', representing wife and wealth) ; the middle transmission is You (hidden stem Yiyou, multiplied by 'Zhuque', also representing wife and wealth); the final transmission is Xu (hidden stem Bingxu, multiplied by 'Tengsnake', representing son and grandson).

Wu Shiqing explained: This lawsuit is extremely dangerous, with no way to resolve it. How do I know this? The initiating transmission "Shen" is originally the heavenly decree god of the seventh month, but it falls on the empty period; there are also the two deities "Teng Snake" and "White Tiger" whose spirits are added to the卯 and酉, which is called "冢墓门开", inevitably leading to continuous deaths. Furthermore, looking at the three transmissions' heavenly generals, they are all penetrated by jiesha. The disease, death, tomb, and extinction of the ding fire are all present in the divination, where is there any way to save? Moreover, the year of the person's birth has "Gou Chen" with yangren and belongs to wood, which is the image of a person wielding a staff and carrying out punishment. This case will certainly result in deaths. Later, indeed, three people were subjected to shackles, public humiliation, and杖责 and died.

The imperial decree is the same as the imperial book, and it is determined according to the four seasons: in spring it is in the Year of the Tiger (Yin), in summer in the Year of the Snake (Si), in autumn in the Year of the Monkey (Shen), and in winter in the Year of the Pig (Hai). This lesson is cast in the seventh month, which belongs to the autumn season, so the imperial decree is in the Year of the Monkey (Shen). The phrase "imperial decree sits on an empty position" is because this旬 (decade) is the Jiashen decade, and the empty position of this decade is in the Years of the Horse (Wu) and the Goat (Wei); the Year of the Monkey (Shen) is now directly above the position of the Goat (Wei), with its foot on the empty position, hence it is said that the imperial decree falls into an empty position. The method of determining the Jiesha (a type of malevolent spirit) follows the Triple Harmony Formation: in the Water triad (Shen-Zi-Chen), Jiesha is in the Year of the Snake (Si); in the Metal triad (Si-You-Chou), it is in the Year of the Tiger (Yin); in the Fire triad (Yin-Wu-Xu), it is in the Year of the Pig (Hai); and in the Wood triad (Hai-Mao-Wei), it is in the Year of the Monkey (Shen).

The phrase "冢墓门开" means that the gates of the tomb are open. "Teng Snake" belongs to the element of fire, and when it is on戌, it is called "entering the tomb," because戌 is theStorage of fire, symbolizing a snake entering a grave. "White Tiger" is said to guard the gates at卯 and酉, and when people leave, it bites them. Therefore, having both the Teng Snake and White Tiger, which areTomb Spirit, on卯 and酉 indicates that the gates of the tomb are open. In this case, the Teng Snake is on戌, which is placed on酉, and the White Tiger is on辰, which is placed on卯. This means both the tomb gate and the household gate are open, leading to repeated losses and deaths.
