Divination for the "Injury by Harm" method, "Two Guests Advancing and Sitting" (Guihai year, first lunar month, Jihai day)

In the year Guihai, during the first lunar month after the rain on the second day, the month general was "Dengming" (亥). The divination was made on the day Jihai and the time Xinwei, which falls in the Jiawu decade (the empty branches are in Chen and Si). At that time, two guests entered the room and sat down to seek divination. The lesson pattern was "Shehai", "Quzhi", and "Huian". The month general亥 was placed on the branch Wei (未) for the time of divination. The four lessons were: Jihai was placed in the Wei branch, with亥 on top, forming the first lesson (亥 was riding on "Teng Snake"); on the branch Wei, there was卯 on top, forming the second lesson (卯 was riding on "Xuanwu"); the day branch亥 still had卯 on top, so the third lesson was the same as the second; on the branch卯, there was未 on top, forming the fourth lesson (未 was riding on "Qinglong"). The three transmissions were: the first transmission was未 (the hidden stem was Yiwei, riding on "Qinglong", which was a companion for the day Jihai); the middle transmission was亥 (the hidden stem was Jihai, riding on "Teng Snake", representing wife and wealth); the final transmission was卯 (the hidden stem was Guimao, riding on "Xuanwu", representing official and ghost).
Master Wu Shiqing interpreted: "The Azure Dragon" initiates the transmission, and the four lessons and three transmissions form an official structure, indicating the question is definitely about this year's official position, and there will be a response from the court in June. Because the wood of spring is just beginning to flourish, and once summer comes, the branches and leaves will be abundant, suggesting a far-reaching future career. The guest asked: Why specifically mention June? The answer is: The initiating transmission's "Wei" corresponds to the imperial grace deity of the first month, and the middle transmission's "Hai" corresponds to the heavenly decree deity of the first month; it is determined to be June because "Hai" is placed on "Wei," and "Wei" is in the month builder's position for June. Later, it was indeed verified in June. This lesson's initiating transmission takes "Wei" from the "Mao" position.
The heavenly decree deities are determined according to the Month Builder, and they are always three positions before the Month Builder: for the寅 month, it is亥; for the卯 month, it is子; for the辰 month, it is丑; for the巳 month, it is寅; for the午 month, it is卯; for the未 month, it is辰; for the申 month, it is巳; for the酉 month, it is午; for the戌 month, it is未; for the亥 month, it is申; for the子 month, it is酉; for the丑 month, it is戌. The imperial grace deities are: for the first and seventh months, it is未; for the second and eighth months, it is酉; for the third and ninth months, it is亥; for the fourth and tenth months, it is丑; for the fifth and eleventh months, it is卯; for the sixth and twelfth months, it is巳. This divination is cast in the first month, so the imperial grace deity is未 and the heavenly decree deity is亥. The two deities are exactly one being the Initiating Transmission and the other the Middle Transmission.
Divination by Harmful Interference · Repeated Punishment and Seeking Good or Bad (Bingzi Year, Second Month · Yiyou Day)
In the year Bingzi, during the second lunar month after the spring equinox, the month general is "River Chief" Xu. The divination is made on the day Yiyou and the time Xinsi, belonging to the Jiashen decade (the empty branches are in Wu and Wei). The person being divined has been sentenced to death and is seeking to know his fortune. The lesson pattern is "Involvement of Harm" and "Heavenly Prison." The month general Xu is placed on the time branch Si. The four lessons are: Yi is placed in the Chén branch, with You on Chén, forming the first lesson (You is accompanied by "Liu He"); You has寅 on it, forming the second lesson (寅 is accompanied by "Tai Yin"); the day branch You still has寅 on it, which is the same as the second lesson; and寅 has Wei on it, forming the fourth lesson (Wei is accompanied by "Qinglong"). The three transmissions are: the first transmission is Wei (the hidden stem is Yiwei, accompanied by "Qinglong," representing wife and wealth, which is exactly on the empty branch); the middle transmission is Zi (the hidden stem is Wuzi, accompanied by "Nobleman," representing parents); and the final transmission is Si (the hidden stem is Guisi, accompanied by "White Tiger," representing children).
Wu Shiqing explained: At present, one will certainly encounter a pardon, and by June there will be signs of release from prison. Someone asked: Why do you say this? The answer was: The divine grace of the emperor is present on the day stem, and the divine heavenly pardon is located on the day branch. The middle transmission's zi is both the current year's master and the nobleman of the yi day. It reverses to be born on the day stem - although the crime is extremely severe, it can turn from misfortune to good fortune. Another question was asked: Why is the release fixed for June? The answer was: Because the nobleman's governing deity is added on the wei, and wei is in the month builder for June. The initiating transmission of this lesson takes the wei carried on the yin.
The method of determining the two forgiving deities: For the Imperial Grace, in the first and seventh months, it is in the Earthly Branch Wei; in the second and eighth months, in You; in the third and ninth months, in Hai; in the fourth and tenth months, in Chou; in the fifth and eleventh months, in Mao; in the sixth and twelfth months, in Si. For Heavenly Pardon, in spring it is in Yin, in summer in Wu, in autumn in Shen, and in winter in Zi. This divination is performed in the second month of spring, so the Imperial Grace is in You and Heavenly Pardon is in Yin. One is present on the day stem and the other is in the day branch, thus the judgment is of pardon.
Divination by Harm · The Person Does Not Speak of What They Are Divining (Yiyou Year, July Gengzi Day)
In the year of Yiyou, after the beginning of autumn in the seventh month, the month general is "Shengguang" (winning light) at the hour of Wu. On the day of Gengzi and the time of Jiashen, the divination is cast, belonging to the Jiawu decade (the empty branches are in Chen and Si). The person only asks to cast the lesson, without stating the specific question. The lesson pattern is "Shehai" (involved in harm) and "Gu Zu" (looking back to ancestors). The month general Wu is placed on the hour of Shen. The four lessons are: Geng is located in the Shen palace, with Wu on top of Shen, as the first lesson (Wu is riding the Azure Dragon); Wu has Chen on top, as the second lesson (Chen is riding Liu He); the day branch Zi has Xu on top, as the third lesson (Xu is riding the Black Tortoise); Xu has Shen on top, as the fourth lesson (Shen is riding the White Tiger). The three transmissions are: the first transmission is Wu (hidden stem Jiawu, riding the Azure Dragon, representing official ghost on the day of Geng), the middle transmission is Chen (riding Liu He, representing parents, falling into the empty branch), and the final transmission is Yin (hidden stem Renyin, riding Teng Snake, representing wife's wealth).
Wu Shiqing explained: Wu is called "Shengguang," and the Heavenly Horse in July also falls on Wu. Shengguang and Heavenly Horse are in the same position, so the inquiry must be about someone who is away from home. The verse says: "Shengguang and Heavenly Horse together, the inquiry is about a traveler; after the month, the red dragon appears, family members arrive at the door." The person said: "Exactly." Because both the Middle Transmission and the Final Transmission fall in the旬空, so the person cannot return within this month; after this month, the Post-horse goes to overcome the Middle Transmission's Chen, so it should be on the Bingchen day. Why is it called "the red dragon appears"? Because the Final Transmission's Yin is the Post-horse, which goes to overcome the Middle Transmission's Chen where the Azure Dragon is, thus determining that family members will arrive on the Chen day.
Another person asked: Using this divination, can we determine if he can regain his position in official service? Wu Shiqing answered: The divination forms the pattern 'Looking Back to Ancestors' with both the middle and final transmissions empty. There is a beginning but no end; this is an example of 'the dragon transforming into a snake'. Only by voluntarily resigning can he preserve his dignity. Because the first transmission is accompanied by the Azure Dragon and the final transmission by the Teng Snake, the dragon god is also inversely overcome by the lower god, indicating that his superior does not treat him well. Later, he regained his position for more than a month, and was indeed impeached and arrested. The initiating transmission of this divination is taken from the palace of the metal element, which is associated with the horse of the hour. This divination mainly uses the god above the day stem as the basis. Probably because the metal element is located in the monkey, and the monkey carries the horse, so the horse is used. The exact method still requires further reference to other examples. The method of determining the Heavenly Horse: in January and July, it is in the horse; in February and August, it is in the monkey; in March and September, it is in the dog; in April and October, it is in the rat; in May and November, it is in the ox; in June and December, it is in the tiger.
Divination on the Harmful Course: Guessing What Is in the Sleeve (Bingyin Year, Jiashen Day)
In the year of Bingyin, after the summer solstice, the month general was "Xiao Ji" on the "Chou" branch (the original text recorded the month as "Chou" month, which does not match the solar term). On the day of Jiashen and the hour of Guiyou, a divination was made. It belonged to the Jiashen ten-day period (the empty branch was in "Wu" and "Wei"). At that time, a guest had a book hidden in his sleeve, and everyone else did not know what it was. The author set up a divination to guess. The lesson pattern was "She Hai" and "Gu Zu". The month general "Wei" was added to the hour of You. The four lessons were: Jia was placed in the "Yin" branch, with "Zi" on top of "Yin", as the first lesson ("Zi" was riding "Tian Hou"); "Zi" had "Xu" on top, as the second lesson ("Xu" was riding "Xuan Wu"); the day branch "Shen" had "Wu" on top, as the third lesson ("Wu" was riding "Qing Long"); "Wu" had "Chen" on top, as the fourth lesson ("Chen" was riding "Liu He"). The three transmissions were: the first transmission was "Wu" (riding "Qing Long", representing a son, falling into the empty branch), the middle transmission was "Chen" (riding "Liu He", representing wife's wealth), and the final transmission was "Yin" (riding "Teng Snake", representing a brother).
Wu Shiqing interpreted that what was hidden in the sleeve must certainly be a document. This is because the Azure Dragon governs documents and is in the position of Initiating Transmission. The hour of Wu is also the grandson爻, and the grandson also governs documents. As for determining it to be a book of the Yi, it is because the positions of Zi and Wu belong to the changing energy of the Yi, so the term Yi is used. The Initiating Transmission of this divination takes the Wu found on the position of Shen.
Seven, Remote Overcoming Lesson
The strength of a "remote overcoming" lesson is not strong, indicating that the matter involved is difficult to achieve. The conditions for forming a "remote overcoming" lesson are that there is no overcoming or stealing among the four lessons, and it does not form a "re-examining" or "original leader" lesson, nor does it form a "comparison using" or "involving harm" lesson. Then the method of "remote overcoming" is applied. Starting with the day stem, compare it with the heavenly stems of the second, third, and fourth lessons. If one heavenly stem is located two positions away and overcomes the day stem, this is called "heavenly stem remotely overcomes the day stem," and the lesson is named "arrow shot." The heavenly stem that overcomes the day stem is taken as the initiating transmission. If none of the heavenly stems overcome the day stem, then look back to see which heavenly stem is overcome by the day stem. If one heavenly stem is overcome by the day stem, this is called "day stem remotely overcomes heavenly stem," and the lesson is named "shooting arrow." The heavenly stem that is overcome is taken as the initiating transmission. If there are two instances of overcoming or one heavenly stem overcomes two instances, then the method of "comparison using" is still applied. The middle and final transmissions are obtained according to the usual method of the heaven plate and earth plate. The so-called method of "comparison using" means still pairing yang with yang and yin with yin, taking the heavenly stem that is compared with the day stem as the initiating transmission.
Remoterestrain lesson · For the thought emperor to pray for rain (Wuyin year third month · Jisi day)
In the year of Wuyin, third month, after the Qingming festival, the month general was "Heqi" (戌). The divination was made on the day of Jisi and the time of Yichou, belonging to the Jiazi cycle (the empty hours were in Xu and Hai). At that time, it had been a long time since it rained, and the late master of Laiyang performed a rain invocation for the Emperor Sizong. He asked which day it would rain. The lesson pattern was "Yao Ke" and "Xuan Tai". The month general 戌 was placed on the time of Chou. The four lessons were: Jia (己) was placed in the Wei palace, with Chen on top of Wei, forming the first lesson (Chen was accompanied by Tai Chang); Chen had Chou on top, forming the second lesson (Chou was accompanied by Qinglong); the day branch Si had Yin on top, forming the third lesson (Yin was accompanied by Tiankong); Yin had Hai on top, forming the fourth lesson (Hai was accompanied by Liuhe). The three transmissions were: the first transmission was Yin (the hidden stem was Bingyin, accompanied by Tiankong, which was the official star on the day of Jia); the middle transmission was Hai (the hidden stem was Yihai, accompanied by Liuhe, which was the wife's wealth, falling into the empty hour); the final transmission was Shen (the hidden stem was Renshen, accompanied by Guiren, which was the son's fortune).
Master Wu Shiqing explained: On the day of Si and Wu, there will first be strong winds. After this ten-day period, on the day of Jiaxu, there will be light rain, and on the day of Yi, there will be heavy rain. Why? The Heavenly Gang (Tian Gang) is located at Chen, which is on the position of Wei, and Wei is associated with the Wind God. It is also in the initiating transmission. The official (Gongcao) at Yin is the Jiesha for the day of Si, and Gongcao with Jiesha comes to attack the day stem, thus causing strong winds. Furthermore, the Nobleman (Guiren) is on the heavenly gate (Tianmen) - Tianyi is on Hai, and Hai is the heavenly gate; the Azure Dragon (Qinglong) also rises into the sky - Qinglong is on Wu, which is called flying heaven. These are signs of rain. However, because the middle transmission's Hai is in the empty position and the final transmission's Shen is in a declining position, it is said that the effect will only be seen after this ten-day period. The reason for only light rain on Jiaxu is that it is in a resting state and also in the empty position. The reason for heavy rain on Yi is that on that day, the day stem and the hour stem are in mutual conflict, and the water and wood elements are in turmoil.
The original commentary says: The statement that Yi wood day and Zi and Mao branches are in mutual punishment should be checked. On this旬, the Yi day is paired with Hai, and it is the Bing day that is paired with Zi. Therefore, the term "Yi day" here should be "Bing day". Additionally, the method of determining Jiesha is as follows: on days of Shen Zi Chen, Jiesha is in Si; on days of Si You Chou, Jiesha is in Yin; on days of Yin Wu Xu, Jiesha is in Hai; on days of Hai Mao Wei, Jiesha is in Shen. This lesson is on Si day, so Jiesha is in Yin, which coincides with the position of Gongcao.
Remoterestrain lesson · Divination for continuing the marriage (Jichou year fifth month · Guiyou day)
In the year of Jichou, in the fifth lunar month after the Grain in Ear, the month general is determined by 'transmission' to Shen. The divination is made on the day of Guiyou and the hour of Xinyou, which falls in the Jiazi cycle (the empty branch is in Xu and Hai). The question is about whether the matter of a second marriage can be successfully arranged. The lesson pattern is 'remote control', 'arrow', and 'retreating herb'. The three transmissions are Wei, Wu, and Si, in reverse order, hence called 'retreating herb'. The month general Shen is placed on the hour of You. The four lessons are: Gui is placed in the Xu branch, with Zi on top, forming the first lesson (Zi is ridden by the Azure Dragon); Zi has Hai on top, forming the second lesson (Hai is ridden by the Sky Void); the day branch You has Shen on top, forming the third lesson (Shen is ridden by the Black Tortoise); and Shen has Wei on top, forming the fourth lesson (Wei is ridden by the Tai Yin). The three transmissions are: the first transmission is Wei (hidden stem Xinwei, ridden by Tai Yin, representing official ghost on the day of Gui); the second transmission is Wu (hidden stem Gengwu, ridden by Heavenly Empress, representing wife's wealth); the third transmission is Si (hidden stem Jisi, ridden by Nobleman, representing wife's wealth with hidden ghost).
Master Wu Shiqing interpreted: This marriage will certainly be arranged, but after it is completed, there will certainly be legal disputes. Why will it be arranged? The day stem and day branch are in mutual harmony - Zi and Chou are in harmony; the heavenly stem on the day branch, Shen metal, comes to nourish the day stem Gui water, indicating the woman is willing to marry the man. The wealth hexagram and official star are both receiving the prosperous and strong energy. The official star represents the husband, and the wealth hexagram represents the wife, indicating the couple will live happily together and have a son. Then where does the legal dispute come from? The middle transmission and final transmission both come to nourish the first transmission's official ghost, which turns back to harm the day stem's Azure Dragon riding Zi water; furthermore, the午 fire wealth hexagram is placed on the 未 ghost position - it will certainly be due to the wife that litigation arises. Later, he married for more than a month, and the woman's former husband's younger brother came to file a lawsuit, costing hundreds of taels of silver; in the year of Geng, he had a good son.
Hao Shi Lesson · Mi Qing Zhan Ke (Jiazi Year April · Guimao Day)
In the year of Jiazi, in the fourth lunar month after the beginning of summer, the month general is "Congui" on the酉 branch. The divination is made on the day of Guimao and the hour of Wuwu, belonging to the Jiawu decanal cycle (the empty branches are in Chen and Si). The person asking the question refuses to state their purpose and only requests a secret divination. The lesson pattern is "Haoshı" and "Bu Bei." The four lessons are: the day stem Gui is placed in the Chen branch, with the卯 branch riding on it, forming the first lesson (the卯 branch is riding on "Nobleman"). The卯 branch is then riding on the巳 branch, forming the second lesson (the巳 branch is riding on "Tai Yin"). The day branch, which is also the卯 branch, is again riding on the巳 branch, which is the same as the second lesson, so the four lessons are actually only three, hence the term "Bu Bei." The巳 branch is then riding on the未 branch, forming the fourth lesson (the未 branch is riding on "Vermilion Bird"). The three transmissions are: the first transmission is the未 branch (the hidden stem is Yiwei, riding on "Vermilion Bird," representing officials and spirits on the day of Gui), the middle transmission is the酉 branch (the hidden stem is Dingyou, riding on "Gou Chen," representing parents), and the final transmission is the亥 branch (the hidden stem is Jihai, riding on "Tian Kong," representing siblings).
Master Wu Shiqing said: You must have come to divinate about pregnancy, because the noon hour is exactly the fetal god of the癸 day. The person said: Yes, then will it be a son or a daughter? The answer was: The卯 on the day stem belongs to the trigram Zhen in the Eight Trigrams, which represents the elder son, and also combines with the noble official; the three transmissions and four lessons are all yin branches. Yin reaching its extreme gives rise to yang, so it is certain to be a noble child. Moreover, the day branch is added upon the day stem, so when looking up, one sees the descendants, and the childbirth will certainly be smooth. However, since the four lessons are not complete, there is a fear that the child may be born before full term. Then the question was asked: When will it be born? The answer was: In June, because the未 of June is the nurturing god and is the one to initiate the transmission. Then determining the day and time, it is the子 day and寅 hour—because the子 comes to oppose the午 fetal god, and the子 position on the earth plate also has the寅 added upon it.
Therefore, when determining the birth month, we take Wei as the nurturing spirit and appropriately apply the initiating transmission, so the deduction will be accurate. Even if the nurturing spirit does not coincide with the initiating transmission, when predicting the due date, it is mostly likely to fall on the position of the nurturing spirit.
Hao Shi Lesson · Divination on Brothers' Imperial Examination (Dingmao Year August · Yisi Day)
In the year of Dingmao, during the eighth lunar month after the autumn equinox, the month general is "Heavenly Gang" (Tian Gang) on the辰 (Chen) branch. The divination is made on the day of Yi Si and the time of Jiashen. This falls within the Jiachen decade (Xun kong is in Yin and Mao). The divination concerns whether the brother can pass the local examination. The lesson pattern is "Hao Shi" and "Cong Ge" — the three transmissions form a metal circle with the combination of巳 (Si), You (Shen), and Chou (Xu). The month general, Chen, is placed on the time branch Shen. The four lessons are: Yi is placed in the Chen branch, with Zi on top of Chen, forming the first lesson (Zi is accompanied by "Nobleman"); Zi has Shen on top, forming the second lesson (Shen is accompanied by "Tai Chang"); the day branch Si has Chou on top, forming the third lesson (Chou is accompanied by "Teng Snake"); and Chou has You on top, forming the fourth lesson (You is accompanied by "Black Tortoise"). The three transmissions are: the first transmission is You (hidden dry branch Jiyou, accompanied by "Black Tortoise", representing official ghost for the Yi day); the middle transmission is Si (hidden dry branch Yisi, accompanied by "Azure Dragon", representing son and daughter); the final transmission is Chou (hidden dry branch Guichou, accompanied by "Teng Snake", representing wife and wealth).
Wu Shiqing explained: Both brothers will be successful, the one born in the year of Wu will come first, and the one born in the year of Hai will come later. Why? The divination forms into 'Hao Shi' and there is metal present, like an arrow with an iron tip. Starting from the fourth lesson, the number of arrows is in order. The Vermilion Bird is placed on Si, indicating the bird is in its proper season, spreading its wings and soaring, thus encompassing both literary and martial aspects. Moreover, Zi is the yang nobleman on the day of Yi, and Shen is the yin nobleman on the day of Yi. Now, Shen is placed on Zi, which is the nobleman's position, so two noblemen will intervene and recommend the person for success. Later events confirmed the prediction. Another question was asked about the order of precedence. Because the three transmissions are in reverse order and harmonious, the person born in the year of Wu has his birth day Jiayin before Si, while the person born in the year of Hai has his birth day Dingwei after Si. The past is considered first, and the future is considered last, hence the order.
The phrase "Hao Shi Jian Jin" means that in this divination, the initial hexagram forms a Hao Shi (arrow made of reed), and the three transmissions form the metal cycle of Si, You, and Xu, which is a pattern of metal. An arrow made of reed with a metal tip has power when it is shot, so it indicates success.
Hao Shi Lesson · Divination for the Imperial Examination (Dingchou Year, Second Month · Yiwei Day)
In the year of Dingchou, during the second lunar month after the rainwater solar term, the month general is "Dengming" (亥). The divination is made on the day of Yiwei with the time of Bingxu, which belongs to the Jiawu decade (the empty branches are in Chen and Si). This is a divination on behalf of someone taking the imperial examination. The lesson pattern is "Hao Shi" and "Lian Ru" — the three transmissions are in You, Xu, and Hai, connected in sequence. The month general,亥, is placed on the time branch,戌. The four lessons are: Yi is placed in the Chen branch, with Si on top, forming the first lesson (Si is covered by Liu He); Si has Wu on top, forming the second lesson (Wu is covered by the Vermilion Bird); the day branch, Wei, has Shen on top, forming the third lesson (Shen is covered by Tai Chang); and Shen has You on top, forming the fourth lesson (You is covered by the Heavenly Empress). The three transmissions are: the first transmission is You (hidden stem Dingyou, covered by the Heavenly Empress, representing official ghost for the day Yi); the middle transmission is Xu (hidden stem Wuxu, covered by Tai Yin, representing wife's wealth); the final transmission is Hai (hidden stem Jihai, covered by the Black Tortoise, representing parents).
Wu Shiqing explained: This is a divination for someone else, and he will certainly pass the exam this year. Why? The initiating transmission is酉, which is both the day ghost of the Yi day and the divine grace of the emperor. The middle transmission is戌, which is the 'River Chief', and the Heavenly Joy of the first lunar month is also in戌. The final transmission is亥, which is the long life of the Bing wood, and also the position of the sun, which is most favorable for the examination hall. The metal of the day branch,申, is riding on the nobleman and the official star is present in the branch. Furthermore, the Vermilion Bird,午 fire, goes to generate the old age,丑 earth, and the literary style and expression match the prevailing trends of the time. The name of the divination is 'Reform the Old and Embrace the New', indicating a promotion from the local examination to the imperial examination, which is certain. Unfortunately, the metal of the day branch,申, is in the dead place of the heavenly stem and earthly branch, so his official career may not last long.
The method of selecting the three deities used in this lesson is as follows. The day ghost is determined by the day stem: Jia day is in Shen, Yi day is in You, Bing day is in Hai, Ding day is in Zi, Wu day is in Yin, Ji day is in Mao, Geng day is in Si, Xin day is in Wu, Ren day is in Chen and Xu, Gui day is in Chou and Wei. Imperial Grace: in the first and seventh months, it is in Wei; in the second and eighth months, it is in You; in the third and ninth months, it is in Hai; in the fourth and tenth months, it is in Chou; in the fifth and eleventh months, it is in Mao; in the sixth and twelfth months, it is in Si. Heavenly Joy: in the first month, it is in Xu; in the second month, it is in Hai; in the third month, it is in Zi; in the fourth month, it is in Chou; in the fifth month, it is in Yin; in the sixth month, it is in Mao; in the seventh month, it is in Chen; in the eighth month, it is in Si; in the ninth month, it is in Wu; in the tenth month, it is in Wei; in the eleventh month, it is in Shen; in the twelfth month, it is in You. This lesson is cast in the second month, so Imperial Grace falls on You, which is the same position as the day ghost, and thus initiates the transmission. Therefore, it indicates receiving imperial favor and honor.
Hao Shi Lesson · Divination on Promotion (Dingmao Year January · Dingsi Day)
In the year of Dingmao, after the beginning of spring in the first lunar month, the month general is "Shenhou" (God's Wife) on the branch of Zi. The divination is made on the day of Dingshi and the hour of Guimao, which belongs to the Jiayin decade (the empty branch is Zi and Chou). The question is about promotion. The lesson pattern is "Hao Shi" (Arrow) and "Xu Tai" (Mysterious Embryo). The month general Zi is placed on the branch of the hour, which is Mao. The four lessons are: Ding is placed in the branch of Wei, with Chen on top of Wei, forming the first lesson (Chen is ridden by Qinglong); Chen has Chou on top, forming the second lesson (Chou is ridden by Tai Chang); the day branch Si has Yin on top, forming the third lesson (Yin is ridden by Liu He); Yin has Hai on top, forming the fourth lesson (Hai is ridden by Guiren). The three transmissions are: the first transmission is Hai (hidden stem Guihai, ridden by Guiren, representing official ghost on the day of Ding); the middle transmission is Shen (hidden stem Gengshen, ridden by Xuanwu, representing wife's wealth); the final transmission is Si (hidden stem Dingsi, ridden by Tiankong, representing brother).
Wu Shiqing interpreted the divination: The sovereign and the month builder both come to the day stem of Ding fire, indicating that promotion is certain at present, and the place he is assigned is mostly surrounded by mountains and water. Why? The day branch represents the place of appointment, and now the day branch has the element of Yin. Yin belongs to the trigram Gen, which represents mountain, hence it signifies mountains. Yin also combines with亥 water, with the heaven plate and earth plate combining Yin and亥, hence it signifies water. Combined, it is the land of mountains and water. The initiating transmission forms the arrow with iron tip, like an arrow with an iron head;亥 is both the nobleman and the virtue of the day stem Ding, and also the post-horse of the branch巳. Now it enters the first transmission, with the gods of wealth, officialdom, city and officials all present, indicating a rapid promotion. However, one should beware of the yin and yang spirits of the day stem opposing and restraining the official star, so one should be cautious of three people with the surname Chen, Wang and Tian interfering. Later, he was indeed appointed as the governor on the day Guihai, but soon afterwards was dismissed by Tian the military commander.
Why can three surnames be determined? The yang spirit on the day stem is Chen, and the yin spirit is Chou. The harm to this person comes from the areas they are weak in. Determining the surname Chen is based on the homophony between "Chen" and "Chen." Determining the surname Wang and Tian is based on the shape of "Chou": adding one stroke to the left of "Chou" forms "Tian," and removing one stroke from the right forms "Wang."
Hao Shi Lesson: Divination on When a Traveler Will Arrive (Xin Mao Year September · Xin Si Day)
In the year of Xin Mao, during the ninth month after the Cold Dew, the month general is "Heavenly Gang" (Chen). The divination is made on the day of Xin Si and the hour of Xin Mao, belonging to the Jiashen decade (the empty hours are in Wu and Wei). The divination concerns the day when a person traveling away will return home. The lesson pattern is "Hao Shi". The month general Chen is placed on the hour branch Mao. The four lessons are: Xin is placed in the Xu palace, with亥 (Hai) on top of Xu, forming the first lesson (Hai is ridden by "White Tiger"); Hai has Zi on top, forming the second lesson (Zi is ridden by "Sky Void"); the day branch Si has Wu on top, forming the third lesson (Wu is ridden by "Nobleman"); Wu has Wei on top, forming the fourth lesson (Wei is ridden by "Heavenly Empress"). The three transmissions are: the first transmission is Wu (ridden by "Nobleman", representing official ghost, falling into the empty hour), the middle transmission is Wei (ridden by "Heavenly Empress", representing official seal, also falling into the empty hour), and the final transmission is Shen (hidden stem Jiashen, ridden by "Tai Yin", representing brother).
Master Wu Shiqing explained: The person who left home has already started his journey and will arrive home on the day of Bingxu. Why do we know he has already set out? Because the Post-horse, which is亥, is theThe Post-horse of巳 day, and it is directly above the day stem. The fire of午 is riding the Nobleman and is also directly above the day branch. Additionally, the divination forms a蒿矢 and the initiating transmission is active, indicating that the traveler will arrive quickly. Why is the arrival fixed on the day of Bingxu? Because the Post-horse亥 is located in the earth position戌, and戌 is the墓绝 place of the initiating transmission god. The fire of午 takes戌 as its墓 and亥 as its绝. Moreover, the person's true birth stem is寅, and his useful god is午. The combination of寅, 午, and戌 forms a Triple Harmony. Later, he indeed arrived home on the day of Bingxu.
Hao Shi Lesson: Divination on Illness and Choosing a Physician (Ji Mao Year June · Ji You Day)
In the year of Ji Mao, sixth lunar month, after the beginning of Xiaoshu, the month general is used as 'Xiao Ji' (Minor Auspicious) in the hexagram. The divination is made on the day of Ji You and the time of Wu Chen, belonging to the Ji Chen decade (the empty branch is in Yin and Mao). The question is about illness. The lesson pattern is 'Hao Shi' (Arrow) and 'San Jiao' (Three Intersections). The month general 'Wei' is added to the time of divination. The four lessons are: Ji is placed in the Wei branch, with Wei carrying Xu, forming the first lesson (Xu carries the Vermilion Bird); Xu carries Chou, forming the second lesson (Chou carries the Heavenly Empress); the day branch You carries Zi, forming the third lesson (Zi carries the Nobleman); Zi carries Mao, forming the fourth lesson (Mao carries the Black Tortoise). The three transmissions are: the first transmission is Mao (carrying the Black Tortoise, on the Ji day it is the official ghost, falling into the empty branch), the middle transmission is Wu (hidden dry branch Bing Wu, carrying Tian Kong, representing the parents), and the final transmission is You (hidden dry branch Ji You, carrying Liu He, representing the children).
Wu Shiqing first explained in four rhyming lines: There is no need to worry much about the illness this year; a black horse comes from afar and rides westward; seek an empty and quiet path early, so that you may prolong your life; the house shows the spirit of the fetus, with one yin branch and two yang branches. Then he explained: The master stem initiates the transmission and causes the day stem to break, and also falls in the empty period, so there is no problem at present; however, the卯 (Mao) is the god of medicine and initiates the transmission to overcome the day stem, indicating that the doctor's treatment is inappropriate. The卯 wood is the official ghost, and the巳 fire becomes the White Tiger, which indicates that the spleen earth and lung metal are both affected, and one cannot get out of trouble for a while; one must consult a doctor from the southeast named Qian, Liu, or Jin, using methods to calm the liver and clear the heart—since the liver belongs to wood and the heart to fire—the illness will gradually improve. Otherwise, in the spring of the Renwu year, there will be other concerns.
Hao Shi Lesson: Divination on Illness and Determining the Time of Death (Jichou Year August · Yiwei Day)
In the year of Jichou, during the eighth lunar month after the White Dew, the month general is 'Taiyi' (Great One) in the巳 (Snake) branch. The divination is made on the day of Yiwei and the time of Xinsi, which belongs to the Jiawu decade (the empty branches are in Chen and Si). The question concerns illness. The lesson pattern is 'Hao Shi' (Arrow) and 'Lian Ru' (Linked Grains) — the three transmissions are in You, Xu, and Hai, connected in sequence. The four lessons are: Yi is placed in the Chen branch, with Si riding on Chen, forming the first lesson (Si is ridden by 'Qinglong' (Azure Dragon)); Si has Wu riding on it, forming the second lesson (Wu is ridden by 'Tiankong' (Heavenly Void)); the day branch is Wei, with Shen riding on it, forming the third lesson (Shen is ridden by 'Tai Chang' (Great Constancy)); Shen has You riding on it, forming the fourth lesson (You is ridden by 'Xuanwu' (Black Tortoise)). The three transmissions are: the first transmission is You (hidden stem Dingyou, ridden by 'Xuanwu', representing official ghost for the day Yi); the middle transmission is Xu (hidden stem Wuxu, ridden by 'Taiyin' (Great Yin), representing wife's wealth); the final transmission is Hai (hidden stem Jihai, ridden by 'Tianhou' (Heavenly Empress), representing parents).
Wu Shiqing interpreted: This patient has already been bedridden and is destined to die around the transition between August and September. How do we know he will not recover? The day stem and day branch are both in the state of absolute depletion under the influence of the metal element of Shen. The course of the transmission indicates a renewal of things. The Heavenly Horse of August is located in Shen and is added to the day branch, while theThe Post-horse of巳, which is theThe Post-horse of the day of Wei, is also on the day stem. Thus, two horses are both present on the patient's body. Furthermore, the upper god on the day stem of Yi is巳, which represents the house, and it is accompanied by the Azure Dragon. The upper god on the day branch is申, which also represents the house, and it is accompanied by Tai Chang. This is called the "Funeral Paper and Money Evil." The patient encountering theThe Post-horse is not auspicious. How do we know he is bedridden? Because the body position of Yi is located on卯, which is the position of the bed and the coffin. How do we determine the time of death? Among the three transmissions, there are two yin and one yang. The middle transmission of Xu is added to the position of You. Xu corresponds to September and You corresponds to August, which marks the transition between August and September. Later, after the beginning of September, the prediction proved accurate.
Hao Shi Lesson · Midnight Knocking at the Door (Jisi Year November · Dingyou Day)
In the year of Jisi, during the eleventh month after the winter solstice, the month general is "Da Ji" (Great Good) in the Chou branch. On the day of Dingyou and the hour of Gengxu, a divination was performed, belonging to the Jiawu decade (the empty branches are Chen and Si). The divination was started at night when someone knocked on the door. The lesson pattern is "Hao Shi" (Arrow). The month general Chou is placed on the hour branch Xu. The four lessons are: Ding is placed in the Wei branch, with Xu on top of Wei, forming the first lesson (Xu with "Heavenly Empress"); Xu has Chou on top, forming the second lesson (Chou with "Tai Chang"); the day branch You has Zi on top, forming the third lesson (Zi with "Black Tortoise"); and Zi has Mao on top, forming the fourth lesson (Mao with "Tian Kong"). The three transmissions are: the first transmission is Zi (hidden stem Gengzi, with "Black Tortoise", representing official star on the day of Ding); the middle transmission is Mao (hidden stem Guimao, with "Tian Kong", representing parents); and the final transmission is Wu (hidden stem Jiawu, with "Liu He", representing companion).
Master Wu Shiqing interpreted the divination: The person knocking on the door is certainly involved in a robbery case. When the door was opened, the visitor said that there was a candidate in the village who had gathered people to cause unrest. He then divined again about this case and interpreted: The disturbance will soon be exposed and the culprit will be captured, so there is no need to worry. Why? The day stem's戌 is the墓神 (mound deity), which is superimposed upon the day branch. The day branch's子 is theDeath Deity (death deity); the子 water, which is occupied by theBlack Tortoise (Black Tortoise), is located in the酉, which is a败地 (declining place) —酉 is theBathing (bathing). The戌 earth of the day stem also turns back to control it. Therefore, this disturbance will not last long, and when the earth becomes strong, it will naturally be resolved.
Shooting Lesson · Solar Eclipse Divination (Gengyin Year October · Xinsi Day)

In the year of Gengyin, in the tenth month after the beginning of winter, the month general is "Tai Chong" (卯). On the day of Xinsi, which coincides with the new moon, and at the time of Jiawu, a divination is made. This falls within the Jiaxu decade, with the empty branch in Shen and You. The cause is a solar eclipse occurring in the sky, and the question is about its verification. The lesson pattern is "Dan She," "Bing Tai," and "Li De." The month general, which is卯, is placed on the time of午. The four lessons are: Xinh巳 is placed in the Xu branch, with Xu carrying Wei, as the first lesson (Wei carries the Heavenly Empress); Wei carries Chen, as the second lesson (Chen carries the Vermilion Bird); the day branch巳 carries寅, as the third lesson (寅 carries Gou Chen); and寅 carries亥, as the fourth lesson (亥 carries the White Tiger). The three transmissions are: the first transmission is寅 (carrying Gou Chen, representing wife wealth on the day of Xinh); the middle transmission is亥 (carrying the White Tiger, representing children); and the final transmission is申 (carrying Tai Yin, representing brothers, which falls in the empty branch).
Wu Shiqing said that the Tai Su is in the position of Xin day, and now it is located in the territory of the constellations Yi and Zhen, and it is used in the position of Si. The territory of Si is also Yi and Zhen. The stem Yin is the Jiesha of Si day, which is called wearing punishment and wearing calamity. Yin is in the east and Si is in the south, so there will be signs of war in the southeast region of Chu. The divination is called "shooting," like a projectile being launched, with great worry and alarm. The middle transmission is in the position of Hai, which is the White Tiger, and it is also theThe Post-horse of Si day, which turns back to clash and control Si day. The final transmission is in the position of Shen, which is the Tai Yin, and it clashes and controls the Tai Su, but Shen is in the empty position of the ten days, so the conspiracy will ultimately fail. Looking further, the river covers the well, the Black Tortoise enters the pit, and the White Tiger comes out of the forest, riding on the current year, which indicates much wind and flooding. Unfortunately, the "Leigong" is in Hai, and the "Leisha" is in Shen, both appearing together to form a sick fetus, and the atmospheric energy cannot be contained, which is a sign of many people falling ill. The next day there was indeed a great thunderstorm, and the following year there was flooding. In addition, the other predictions also came true.
The method of determining the position of Lei Gong (Thunder God) is as follows: in January, May, and September, it is in Yin; in February, June, and October, it is in Hai; in March, July, and November, it is in Shen; in April, August, and December, it is in Si. The method of determining the position of Lei Sha (Thunder Harm) is as follows: in January, May, and September, it is in Hai; in February, June, and October, it is in Shen; in March, July, and November, it is in Si; in April, August, and December, it is in Yin. Since the divination is performed in October, Lei Gong is in Hai and Lei Sha is in Shen. Both appear exactly in the three transmissions.
