On the day of the military campaign, if a snake is encountered lying across the path, and the snake enters the water, it foretells a great victory. However, if the snake is red in color, the war will be prolonged with uncertain outcomes. An old commentary says that at this time, one should halt for a day and resume the campaign only afterwards for good fortune. It is most inauspicious to encounter a red snake during the march. One should be cautious and vigilant, as there will be arduous battles ahead. It is advisable to train the soldiers thoroughly, reward them generously, and apply both kindness and discipline. The rewards should be given fairly without partiality. When the army departs and suddenly encounters two snakes entwined, one should conduct military drills, display the army's strength, and hold a banquet to reward the soldiers. Otherwise, the commander may suffer from a stroke caused by evil spirits and die, his body buried in the yellow sand.

All kinds of snakes, big and small, crawl in from outside the camp and enter our army, indicating that the soldiers and generals will scatter; also be on guard against them bringing in spies from outside to cause trouble. Using virtue to smooth things over is the proper way. Seeing a long snake drinking water by the camp. At this time, it is auspicious to withdraw troops and return home; otherwise, move the camp to the direction where "Jiu Tian" is located, and perform rituals to ward off calamities. The commentary in the Beijing edition says: the method of moving the "Tai Sui" and "Jiu Tian" is the same. While marching, if a snake crosses the road beside it, this mainly warns against hidden troops and obstacles ahead. One should think carefully and repeatedly, for this expedition will ultimately not be able to expand the territory.

A snake entering a well signifies the defeat of an army; or there may appear within the camp a snake coiled like a wooden mallet. When a snake enters a well, it is an omen of being trapped and unable to escape. At such a time, if one still goes to fight, blood will flow in great quantity, and one should instead hold fast to one's camp and wait until this ominous force has passed. A snake crossing a road, whether white or red, will affect military affairs. This certainly indicates that enemy troops are blocking the way; one should only stay in place, reward the soldiers, and soon return home. Old commentaries say: whenever a snake of unusual color blocks the road, one should retreat and cease fighting, which is highly auspicious. A snake shaped like a bird or like an arch (or a chariot); or a white snake with a broken and intermittent body, appearing in succession of five or six in a city or camp, indicates calamity involving weeping and shedding of blood.

Seeing a dragon snake indicates that it is not advisable to attack the enemy's camp; if a green snake is seen, the master is ill; if a yellow snake is seen, there will be plague and miasma, which will ultimately result in misfortune. Relocating the camp can avoid these calamities. During military campaigns, the most feared thing is encountering snakes in water; if fish, dragons, or clams are also seen, it indicates difficulties in advancing or retreating, and matters will not be settled. One should quickly retreat and not hesitate or sigh. Old annotations say that the divination for seeing dragons, snakes, or clams is the same. After setting up camp, if a large snake coils around the camp and stays there, the snake coiling and not leaving indicates that external forces are surrounding the camp, and enemy troops are certainly going to attack. One should raise and reinforce the ramparts, set up more banners to show strength, and be cautious day and night.

Divination on Animals, Second Ten (In the Beijing edition it is listed as the Twenty-second, with the first six poems separately titled "Divination on Oxen and Horses, Eighteenth") · Thirty-four poems

Within the camp, horses turn around at night and neigh from their stalls. This indicates that the army is about to leave the camp for a major battle; it is advisable to deploy brave soldiers promptly, clearly establish orders, and ensure discipline before taking action. Within the military encampment, cattle gnaw on stones and soil. This certainly signifies that our forces will achieve significant victories against the enemy, with the general defeating the enemy and gaining fame far and wide. All soldiers will receive honor and prosperity. Within the camp, cattle dance in front of people. Cattle are animals used for farming, and their dancing signifies the revival of agricultural activities. Therefore, this indicates that warfare will cease, soldiers will rest, and there will be no need for further warfare to return home. All people will celebrate a peaceful and prosperous year.

A fire from the heavens suddenly broke out in the stable. This indicates that the army is about to rise, so it is necessary to cultivate virtue and morality, and only then will the calamity be resolved. Do not bring misfortune upon oneself. Within the city and camp, donkeys and horses suddenly spoke human language. One must listen carefully to what they say and take it as a guide. Then, examine the years of military campaigns in the future, and only then can revenge be taken and grievances resolved. Within the military camp, oxen and horses cried out at night. This certainly indicates that a force of strong warriors is coming to provoke trouble. One must be on guard against enemies attempting to attack by night and quickly arrange for elite soldiers to be on standby.

Within the city walls, livestock giving birth to twin-headed monsters or creatures with eight legs, or any four-legged animals with two heads, are signs of 'one body with two masters.' Such anomalies indicate unavoidable calamities, portending the splitting of the country and conflicting decrees. The time when this prophecy will come true may be delayed until later. When divining through animals, one must consider their physical forms. Any abnormal shapes should be taken seriously, and their implications of good or ill should be explained to the ruler. Special attention should be given to fierce beasts such as tigers, jackals, and wolves. On the day of an army's departure, if wild animals block the military procession and charge straight through the ranks, it signifies that the formation will be scattered and disordered. A capable general must understand this and take preventive measures in advance.

While marching, if wolves, tigers and bears are seen running wildly in front of the army, this indicates that there will certainly be a battle within ten days. To act first is in accordance with the Star of wisdom and adaptability. Various animals, either with strange colors or unknown names, those with claws and teeth can harm people and are to be feared, indicating serious misfortune. Those without claws or teeth cannot cause harm, and the outcome will be less severe. The distinction between good and bad fortune is clear. Wild animals are running around both in front and behind the camp. One should sacrifice a complete sacrificial animal to worship heaven and earth, so that the entire army can remain safe. If there is then a battle, victory is certain.

Within the camp, a white deer enters. White is a sign of loss, and a deer entering the camp indicates that external forces are invading internally, which foretells the occurrence of illness and misfortune among the soldiers; if the deer has no horns, it signifies that the army will return. Relocating the camp can avoid disaster and danger. When troops are stationed, if a deer runs into the camp, this definitely indicates that someone who is about to surrender will come to pay homage. Within three days, the matter will become clear, and all will be joyful, with the military strength greatly enhanced. The annotations by Xin Ben and Chuan Ben say: if there is an ongoing battle, it will result in a great victory. Wolves and tigers are most to be feared if they enter the army or collide with the ranks or block the roads. Within a few days, there will be danger and misfortune. One should strengthen vigilance and avoid engaging in battle or attacks.

Tigers devouring each other indicate a sign that will not be fulfilled within three years. There must certainly be a large army arriving at this place, and military calamity will descend upon the region it governs, causing mutual suffering. The meaning of this omen relates to heavenly fate. When troops are stationed, a wild elephant (or wild boar) enters the camp. It should be quickly killed and used to sacrifice to the war drum, only then will the entire army attain peace; the person leading the sacrifice must observe a strict fast and perform a ritual bath with sincerity and diligence. Within the city or camp, if a deer (or muntjac) enters, it should be sacrificed with three animals for a prayer, and the camp should be quickly moved to avoid misfortune, otherwise calamities will multiply.

A sudden appearance of a porcupine near the military camp indicates the presence of armed forces. The porcupine, with its sharp spines, symbolizes the threat of hidden enemies or ambushes. At this moment, it is advisable to take the initiative and act swiftly, without hesitation. Relocating the camp is the best way to ensure security without worries. A wild boar suddenly enters the military camp. The boar is fierce but lacks long-term strategy, symbolizing an initial advantage that will eventually lead to defeat. This suggests that although the battle may start with a victory, the momentum will not be sustained. It is necessary to quickly move the camp to avoid disaster, and promptly perform rituals to appease the spirits. Do not hesitate or retreat, nor should one advance recklessly after an initial success. A rabbit suddenly runs into the military camp. Rabbits are timid and do not fight. Therefore, even with a strong army, no actual battle will occur, as the enemy originally intended to seek peace. At this time, there is no need to strive for military achievements forcefully.

Within the military camp, wild cats are making frequent noises at night; if it were wolves howling at night, the divination would be the same. Continuous night noises are not just signs of restlessness, but indicate that the soldiers have already begun to leave the camp, and disaster is soon to come. The commander should act promptly to comfort the troops, restate the rewards and punishments, provide generous supplies of clothing and food, and restore the scattered morale of the soldiers. When troops are stationed, dogs enter the camp. This indicates there are traitors within the camp colluding with outsiders. They should be quickly captured and the cause investigated, to prevent the conspiracy from spreading further. Within the military camp, dogs exhibit abnormal and strange behavior, causing suspicion. They should be killed immediately, and the blood should be spilled on the defensive site, then buried three feet deep to ward off disaster. In this way, the enemy commander will surely be captured.

Within the military camp, if a wild boar enters, even climbing onto the city walls, encountering such an omen usually indicates a fire; otherwise, it may portend mourning and funerary rites or military conflict. One should make efforts to pray and offer sacrifices in order to ensure peace and safety. While on the march, if one encounters monkeys on the road, one should strictly enforce orders, be vigilant against fear and unrest, and according to propriety, arrange long spears and整顿 spears and halberds, thoroughly planning all strategies in advance. If wolves and tigers circle around the camp, emitting sounds that resemble both crying and howling, the howling of tigers and wolves around the camp signifies the gathering of death qi within the camp, indicating a great defeat for the entire army, the general's troops溃散, frequent calamities, and corpses piling up until they fill the gullies. Those who see this omen should immediately evacuate the camp and avoid anyby chance thoughts.

A wolf ran straight into our army. This omen indicates that the enemy will surrender within three or five days. I can lead them to present themselves before the king, and both sides will be able to receive the royal grace. A wild boar and a deer rushed into the central camp from outside. Wild animals entering the camp without fear or avoidance is a sign of submission. There will certainly be people who come to surrender. This will be clear within three days. I can lead the envoys of the surrendered party to present themselves before the royal court, without needing to fight again. A wolf and a tiger suddenly appeared, causing fear. They moved around both the front and the rear of our army. This warns of a great battle with blood flowing in trenches. At this time, there is no wise and virtuous leader to mediate.

At the time of military encampment, a fox ran into the camp and kept howling around the village all night. This indicates a serious problem of fire and wind. Furthermore, one should be cautious of enemy ambushes and hidden troops, and conduct thorough searches. A wild boar suddenly appeared within the camp. This foretells a major battle within three to seven days; if not actual warfare, there will certainly be military exercises, competitions with flags and spears. Quickly kill this boar to avoid calamity. A strange human-shaped monster was born from a cow or horse. This definitely indicates an invasion by foreign tribes, confusion between north and south, and chaos among the people. One can only wait quietly for a wise and virtuous leader to emerge and restore order. Wolves and tigers howl and cry, and they attack people. This indicates that military action will begin within five to seven days. One should prepare in advance the strategies for victory and defeat in battle, so as to have a sure chance of defeating the invading forces.

Divination for Water Animals, No. 21 (In the Beijing edition, No. 12) · Seven verses

When marching through the battlefield, the most dangerous thing is encountering creatures of the water. All creatures such as fish, dragons, crocodiles, and giant clams belong to the category of yin forces that have left their proper places, and they are all inauspicious, indicating disaster and danger; at this time, it is more appropriate to retreat and regroup rather than advance, for continuing forward will lead to drowning and destruction. If a dragon appears within the camp, the house, or the pond, this definitely indicates that a high-ranking official is plotting rebellion. One must quickly investigate and eliminate the traitor, rather than waiting until the traitor takes action before responding. Old commentaries say: during the time when Wang Mang and Zhu Wen usurped the throne, dragons were seen in ponds. If a dragon appears in front of the army while marching, this definitely indicates a fierce close combat battle. The side that sees a yellow dragon will win, while the side that sees a black dragon will lose, with blood flowing in rivers on flat ground.

Within the city camp, fish and turtles suddenly appeared. This indicates the need to beware of internal traitors plotting rebellion; otherwise, it foretells a great flood that will flood the army. One should hurry to leave the area to attain peace. Within the city camp, turtles and crabs crawled in, and there were thousands of flies gathering. Turtles and crabs moving about, and flies gathering around decay, are signs of impending ruin and foulness. This portends the army will scatter in panic, suffering a sudden defeat, and the camp will soon be abandoned. At this time, one should first move the camp and then clean up the filth to cut off the negative influence.

When marching through the battlefield and encountering turtles and eels, or when they are found within the encampment of warring forces, it is not advisable to advance further, as advancing will result in loss of troops. One should carefully examine the situation and avoid unnecessary movement. Within the city or camp, if turtles and tortoises enter the camp, their slow movement signifies hesitation and eventual defeat. One should quickly relocate the camp to avoid disaster; if not, misfortune will arise.

Fortunes of Birds, the Twenty-Second (The Capital Edition says 'Fortunes of Flying Animals, the Twentieth') · Eighty-Three Verses

Divination by observing flying birds requires those in command to understand the underlying reasons. The movement of birds can be categorized into several patterns: either flying randomly in all directions, following our army, coming face to face against us, or gathering in groups to circle around. Birds moving in harmony with us usually indicate good fortune, while those coming against us often signify bad fortune. One must carefully discern the situations they represent before deciding on actions to take. An eagle catching a hawk flies swiftly towards the camp. Since they are of the same kind fighting each other, this is certainly a sign of a sworn brother plotting against his younger brother, or the younger brother scheming against his elder brother. One of these two treacherous situations must be the case. While on the march, eagles and hawks fly ahead. Following their direction of flight, the army should advance and surely achieve a great victory, capturing the enemy's general alive. This is a sign of heaven aiding our divine might.

Within the city and camp, the kite turned around and captured the hawk. Using the small to subdue the large is an unusual omen, indicating that there must be a secret plot and hidden misfortune arising. One should be vigilant and prepare in advance, without causing alarm; if a battle occurs at this time, it will result in the loss of elite troops. On the way of marching, the kite captures flying birds. This indicates that there will certainly be a battle ahead on this journey, capturing the enemy leader and capturing all alive, the general will be satisfied. On the way of marching, seeing a hawk and a goshawk, the divination method is the same. If geese do not avoid the goshawk and the goshawk does not attack the geese, this indicates that the two armies are friendly and abide by the treaty, each leading their soldiers to return.

Within the city and camp, a sudden appearance of the cuckoo bird was seen. The cuckoo's cry of blood signifies that there is someone wronged and not yet cleared of suspicion. A佞臣 (evil minister) is carrying out a scheme of slander, harming the virtuous talents. Therefore, heaven sends this bird to mourn and issue a warning. A group of crows are noisy, flying in formation around the camp. One should be cautious of enemy troops coming to attack the camp. It is necessary to prepare early and set traps and ambushes. Delay will lead to disaster and danger. Within the city and camp, all the birds are noisy and calling. Birds are sensitive to human affairs; a group's noise indicates that enemy troops are approaching. This certainly means that a sudden attack by enemy forces is coming. Otherwise, once battle occurs, there will be losses in troops. It is most appropriate to move the camp to another place, and also to send out patrolling cavalry to investigate the direction from which the noise is coming.

A flock of birds fly back and forth. Whether seen while setting up camp or on the march, it indicates that this journey will involve a long distance and is difficult to return safely. One must carefully observe the divine warning from heaven. A group of birds gather, then suddenly take flight, making a loud noise in the sky. This indicates that the camp will be set on fire within three days, or enemies will attack and destroy the camp. Old interpretations say: if one moves the camp at this time, it will be auspicious. Within the city camp, birds are calling from all sides, forming a large flock that screeches and flies away. At this time, one should quickly hold firm to the city camp; if one insists on going out to fight, there will be casualties and loss of generals.

Within the city and camp, birds are calling in groups at night. This surely indicates that a force of soldiers will come to fight; otherwise, the city and its fortifications will experience a false alarm. People should be sent to observe and carefully listen for any sounds from outside. Within the city and camp, the birds gather on the walls of the encampment, all facing the camp and calling. If people are aware of this but cannot respond appropriately, it is a calamity sent by heaven, and casualties are inevitable. Within the city and camp, the magpies suddenly become alarmed. This indicates there are traitors within who collude with outsiders, and one should be cautious of a bitter battle with many casualties, as well as the possibility of plots against the wise ruler.

Within the city and camp, crows suddenly circled around the walls and flew around. This indicates that enemy soldiers are about to attack the camp; otherwise, it may mean calamity from illness or fire, or someone within the camp is about to surrender. Within the city and camp, birds called out a couple of times. The noise of crows usually signifies good news, so there must be an imperial order or messenger arriving soon. One should be ready to wait and go out to greet them. This point must be clearly understood. Birds fighting with each other indicate the need to be cautious about conspiracies and conflicts within the military. Those guilty should be executed to warn others. If internal disputes cannot be stopped, disasters will surely occur, and it is best to hold firm to the camp.

Within the city and its surrounding area, birds gather to fight over their nests and fly about. This indicates certain conflicts and disputes; alternatively, it may mean that lower-ranking officials will engage in wrongdoing. One should be cautious and vigilant, guarding against someone trying to create divisions and discord. When facing battle, if birds call out in all directions, one should choose the direction from which the loudest bird call comes and attack from that direction, which will lead to victory in every battle. On the day of the military campaign, if a group of crows screech and cry loudly in front, one should be alert for an ambush by the enemy. If a battle is unavoidable, do not rush to attack; instead, remain calm and carefully assess the situation to ensure safety.

When the army is on the march, a gathering of birds on the banners indicates that the central army will gain good fortune. If this happens, it foretells the general's promotion and change of position, and the result will come quickly, without delay. On the day of departure, if the birds follow the army, one should be cautious of hidden enemies before encountering the enemy's forces. Once the enemy's formation is met, it is advantageous to attack first, and the battle will surely result in a swift victory. During the march, if a number of birds suddenly fly across from the side, one should be alert for hidden troops attacking the formation. One must search both front and rear carefully and think deeply. If one does not believe this warning, disaster is certain.

When marching, if a crowd of birds flies from behind, if the birds lead the way and follow, there will be a great victory; if they fly against the direction of the army, the troops should retreat, and only then can they avoid disaster. When marching, if birds perch on the military flag, the flag is the center of the army's communication and command. Birds perching on it indicate that someone else is usurping the command, and there must be a traitor spreading enemy rumors and disturbing the soldiers' morale. Be vigilant throughout this旬 and the next month, and also be cautious of someone stealing the command and plotting secretly. When marching, if birds fly and call out above the army, whether setting up camp or arranging the troops, encountering this auspicious sign is in harmony with the Star of wisdom and adaptability, and victory is certain, do not hesitate. When setting up camp, if a crowd of birds gathers on the central military flag, hurry to sacrifice three animals in prayer; otherwise, the army will collapse and the soldiers will scatter. This is a spiritual creature specially coming to inform people.

Within the city and camp, a white magpie flew into the military camp. If it builds a nest within the camp, it indicates a great increase in military conflict; one should quickly move the camp to avoid disaster, otherwise there will be many troubles. A bird settling in the camp signifies the 'guest turning into the host,' which is a sign to be particularly cautious about. Within the city and camp, a spiritual magpie builds a nest. If not moved away, the camp will eventually become empty and there will also be a fire; only by quickly moving the camp can the troubles be eliminated. If staying for a long time, there will certainly be many casualties. After the camp has just been established, a white magpie flies into the camp. White belongs to the Metal element in the Five Phases, which is an ominous sign indicated by the planet of Metal. It signifies that someone is secretly harming others and that affairs in the place of residence will not go smoothly. Moving the camp is necessary to avoid this disaster.

A flock of magpies are clamoring, all their heads facing the enemy's camp. If we attack in the direction their heads are pointing, our army will surely win; if the magpies are just noisy without pointing towards the enemy, then nothing will be accomplished, and people outside the camp will be startled. An old commentary says: if the magpies are noisy while pointing towards the enemy, our army will win; if they are just noisy without pointing towards the enemy, it will be just a false alarm. Suddenly, a wild pheasant flies into the camp. If it lands in the 'De Xiang' area, which is the position where the auspicious spirits are present, its arrival is favorable; if it lands in the 'Xing Sha' position, which is the place of punishment and killing, it is ominous. One must carefully determine from which direction it comes, east or west. Suddenly, a pair of mandarin ducks fall into the camp. Mandarin ducks are naturally a pair that stays together. Now they have lost their habitat and descended, which surely indicates that there will be a traitor within the family, or that friends will harm each other, or that loyal and virtuous people will suffer. At this time, one should strengthen one's own defenses.

Within the city walls, swallows and pigeons suddenly left the city and flew away. Birds are aware of good and bad fortune in advance. Swallows and pigeons live close to people, and now even they have abandoned the city. This surely indicates that fire and calamity are about to occur. The military should be especially cautious and careful, strictly prohibit the use of fire and candles, and perform rituals to ward off evil, in order to achieve peace and safety. Within the city walls, water birds suddenly carried fish and flew to the city gate, bridges, and rooftops. When aquatic creatures are brought to high places, this surely foretells a great flood that will overflow the streets and alleys. Preparations should be made in advance and precautions taken promptly. The call of the ducks is abnormal, sounding like that of geese. This surely indicates disaster for the government and disputes and conflicts. It is necessary to hurry and perform fasting and rituals to appease the spirits, and be cautious to avoid quarrels with others, in order to avoid calamity and punishment.

Wild geese and ducks suddenly make human sounds. This indicates that someone in the family will attain a high official rank of third grade, and all the descendants of the family will enjoy honor and prosperity. This is a favorable omen from heaven, differing from the previous strange occurrences. Within the city and camp, if a hen crows like a rooster, or if it crows at night, there will be misfortune in the family. A hen crowing at dawn signifies an excess of yin over yang; if this is combined with dark doors and people's minds being confused and unclear, sacrifices and rituals must be performed to restore peace. While on a military campaign, if the army hears the cry of the bo bo bird in the air, this omen suggests that the army will be divided into two parts. At the same time, one must beware of internal strife and carefully investigate any treachery. The commander must clarify the situation.

The bird Bo Lao is noisy and clamorous in front of the army. A great calamity is about to arrive, and it must be detected early; within no more than two months, the event will come to pass. The meaning of this omen relates to heavenly fate, and should not be neglected. The bird Bo Lao is crying in the military camp: if it is in the north-south direction, it indicates that the enemy will encircle our general; if it is in the east-west direction, it is merely a show of strength. This omen is clearly distinguishable. Within the city and camp, the bird Xiao is crying loudly. Xiao is a bird of evil sound: if it is in the direction of 'De Xiang', it indicates only the division and movement of troops; if it is in the direction of 'Xing Sha', it indicates fleeing and confusion. Its cry in advance is precisely to make people hear it and become alert.

When setting up camp, a group of birds gather and call out together. If this occurs in the 'De Xiang' direction, it is still acceptable; but if it happens in the 'Xing' position, it indicates blood flowing in a pit. This omen should be carefully examined and listened to. On the day of military departure, hundreds of birds suddenly fly towards the army. This is a sign that heaven's divine power supports our smooth progress. The enemy will surrender, and the border alarms will cease. This campaign will indeed achieve great merit. During the march, a large number of birds cover the camp. This certainly means a large army is coming to attack us. We should use a black flag with a yellow pole to lead the troops. After performing the ritual to ward off evil, we should immediately proceed.

On the day of military campaign, if birds fly towards the army, it indicates that the general is favored by the gods and heaven, and will certainly achieve great merit within ten days, rising to high official rank. The crowing of chickens occurs at midnight or dusk. If it crows at midnight, it signifies that the elite troops must move quickly; if it crows after dusk, it indicates that the army will return. This is a message from the planet Jupiter, conveyed through the sound of the chicken. Old annotations say: the collective crowing of chickens signifies state affairs, while a single chicken crowing indicates misfortune for a family. The clamor of swallows and sparrows indicates military conflict in neighboring regions. If black-headed yellow-bodied birds come flying, or if strange birds with yellow bellies and black bodies, whose names are unknown, appear, it means the enemy has already sent elite troops.

Within the city and its surrounding camps, domestic chickens and wild birds are noisy and fighting together. The chickens are the main force, and the wild birds are the guest force: if the birds win, the guest army will prevail; if the chickens win, the main army will prevail, and the outcome is clearly determined. Both situations require vigilance against the other side's ambushes. Crows are crying loudly without cause over the city and its camps. This is a sign that disaster in warfare is about to occur; if a common household is disturbed by crows, it indicates impending misfortune, and calamity will soon bring unrest and turmoil. Within the city and its surrounding camps, cranes (or perhaps storks) fly into the city. This certainly indicates military disaster and epidemic disease, with the people suffering from hunger and abandoning farming. Only by cultivating virtue can such disasters be prevented from escalating.

Within the city and camp, a bird with a yellow body and red head appears. This certainly indicates disaster from the government within three days, and one should also be cautious of treacherous people and rebellion; the calamity of "Flame Star" is especially worrying. Old annotations say: the calamity of "Flame Star" refers to fire. Within the city and camp, red birds fly into the camp, and wild chickens and pheasants also appear. Red belongs to fire, and wild chickens and pheasants also symbolize the image of fire. One should be cautious of wind disasters, fires, and false alarms. Using black flags is most appropriate for warding off evil. Old annotations say: black belongs to water, which can overcome fire, so black flags are used. Whenever red birds fly into the military camp, black flags with white poles should be placed over the general's tent, covering it for three days in front of the tent, which is considered auspicious for warding off evil. Within the city and camp, a large bird circles around. This does not mean the general will die from miasma or disease, but rather one should be cautious of external enemies attacking and injuring oneself. The ominous sign has already appeared; it should not be regarded as a common bird occurrence.

Within the camp, a strange bird suddenly flies in and cannot be named. One must be cautious and beware of punishments and misfortunes brought from outside; otherwise, it will lead to disaster for the generals within the army. At this time, one must set up a斋 (a ritual offering) and perform a醮 (a ritual for appeasing spirits) and pray, in order to avoid any discord. Within the camp, at midnight when all is quiet, the mourning jays call out. This is a sign that hostile troops are approaching our side, so one must strengthen defenses and quickly move the camp, only then can things become peaceful. Within the camp, all the birds suddenly take flight and soar together, blocking the sky and forming formations. This surely indicates that there will be chaos and rebellion both inside and outside the camp. One must carefully investigate and examine the situation: internally, one must guard against betrayal and internal strife, and externally, one must be on alert against enemy attacks.

The enemy's camp is filled with many birds perching above. The fact that birds dare to perch there indicates that there are no people in the camp, which certainly means the enemy has abandoned their camp and is retreating. Otherwise, they might be secretly ambushing and leaving their camp empty as a bait to lure us in. We should carefully examine the traces and first send light cavalry to probe, without rashly entering the camp. The birds above the enemy's camp are all making loud noises. By observing their gathering and dispersing over the next few days, we can discern the situation: either the enemy is about to scatter, or they are secretly preparing a plot to deceive us. We should be prepared for defense to fully understand this omen. Various kinds of birds calling are most unfavorable when they call three times. If they call once or five times, it indicates that the general will have smooth and harmonious circumstances. If the number exceeds this, it is not worth paying attention to; even if they call all night long throughout the heavens and earth, we should ignore it. Old annotations cite the Book of Changes saying 'three calls are ominous,' so three calls are considered unfavorable.

Divination by observing flying birds depends on why they fly and from which direction they enter the camp. If they land in the direction of "De Xiang" (the virtuous town), it brings good fortune to the military; if they come from the "Xing" (punishment) area, the sound is ominous. All kinds of birds are judged by this principle. Within the city, birds scatter and build their nests separately. If birds build nests in the city, it indicates that the area is about to be abandoned and deserted. The camp should be moved quickly, without delay; otherwise, misfortunes will follow continuously. When attacking a city, if a group of birds fly out from the city walls, it signifies that the enemy inside is greatly disturbed and will attempt to break out. The troops outside should quickly prepare their weapons and block the escape routes, carefully planning their strategy to attack and destroy the enemy as they attempt to flee.

Within the military camp, white birds are standing on the top of the flagpole, gathering in several groups, and everyone can see them. This indicates that the general will be promoted in rank and granted the title of marquis or duke, which is a fortunate event bestowed by heaven. Eagles and hawks are chasing other birds towards our army. This indicates that there are strong enemy troops advancing fiercely in front. We should prepare quickly, not delay, and guard the strategic passes and river crossings. When setting up camp, if birds are perched among the branches or on the central flag, with their feathers covering the flag, one should be on alert for enemy cavalry coming to attack. There will be treachery within the camp within three days.

Within the city and camp, strange birds fly in and do not know where to rest; no one recognizes them. This will eventually result in blood staining the grass tips and red spreading everywhere, and one must also be cautious of someone secretly communicating with spies. Divination concerning crows or similar birds: if they fly in groups following the army, this indicates that the enemy ahead has already passed, and the army can soon return home, with joy and celebration, securing peace. Within the city and camp, a large bird suddenly stops and does not leave. One should be on guard against enemies challenging the army; this omen should prompt everyone to withdraw early. If the army does not retreat, the disaster will eventually come. The commentary in the Beijing edition says: it is auspicious to depart within three days.

Within the city and its surrounding camps, large birds fly in great numbers. This indicates that the territory under this region is about to be abandoned, so it is necessary to take prompt action and not linger. Once the order is given, troops should quickly move elsewhere. When on the battlefield, one should listen to the direction from which the birds are calling. If the birds are calling from above the enemy's position, one must avoid engaging in battle and only remain vigilant. If the birds are calling from above the allied forces, then the allied forces will achieve victory. When on the battlefield, if the birds fly toward the enemy's direction, it is auspicious to整顿 banners and weapons and march out to attack the enemy. The general in command should not hesitate, for heaven is now providing assistance at this moment.

At the moment of battle, birds fly towards me from the enemy's side. If only one or two birds come, we can still attack; but if they suddenly form an array and cry in a mournful tone, we should not engage in battle and should retreat quickly. Birds in the enemy's camp take flight suddenly. The sudden flight of birds from the camp indicates that there is a gathering of troops inside, and that there is a plan for a sudden attack on our army. This city cannot be taken quickly, so we should retreat immediately; if we fail to recognize this, the general himself will be in danger. Within the city's camp, chickens and geese (or eagles and hawks) enter. This certainly indicates the presence of traitors who are communicating with the enemy; if the bird suddenly attacks another bird, it becomes even more dangerous, and at this time, fighting against the enemy will not lead to victory.

On the day of the military campaign, crows followed and called behind the troops. This is a sign in harmony with the heavenly timing, indicating heavenly assistance for us. The spiritual bird foretells the certainty of victory, and the soldiers will naturally be joyful and inspired. When facing the enemy in battle, if birds come flying from above the enemy's army towards us, it is certain that the soldiers will suffer casualties. However, if the birds fly from behind our army, it is favorable to attack; the enemy will retreat, and we will surely capture them. Within the city or camp, if at night and in silence the sparrow hawk calls out, this indicates that the army is about to return home. One should prepare in advance. This is the heavenly intention reminding us, and as a general, there is no need to be anxious or alarmed.

When setting up camp, many birds gather within the camp. One should be cautious of enemy troops attacking from outside and also worry about the generals within the army developing treacherous intentions. Leave this place quickly; do not delay. Birds fly in all directions above the enemy camp. If battle is fought at this time, it will surely cause casualties among the soldiers; if the birds fly forward from our camp, then we can capture the enemy general alive, and there is no need for further doubt. On the day of the military campaign, crows cry behind the military flag. This is heaven's indication that our side will win, specially sending birds to inform the ministers and generals. All soldiers are delighted. (The above three passages are added according to the Beijing edition.)
