To determine the movement or stillness of an army, one should refer to the "Day Branch." If the Day Branch is before the "Nobleman," the situation is genuine; if all three transmissions move in the same direction, there is no need for doubt. If it is the opposite, with the Nobleman before and the three transmissions scattered, the army will be difficult to move. Regarding the "Star of Movement," the methods for the branches of Chen and Xu are the same as before. The Jingben commentary states that Chen and Xu are the "Kui Gang." If the "Star of Movement" falls on the day's stem and branch, action is certain; if it also approaches the four seasonal branches, there will be no delay, and the troops will be noisy and ready to move. To determine the reality or falsehood of a matter, take the sixth position after the "Heavenly Empress" as the "Star of Emptiness." If the "Star of Emptiness" falls on the day's stem and branch, the matter is definitely false. The "Star of Emptiness" is the most obscure and deceptive of the malevolent stars; behind false rumors lie serious dangers.

To determine the outcome of a battle between opposing forces, one must know the result early. On days of Jia, Yi, Bing, Ding, and Wu or Ji, if the battle occurs during the day, the side leading the attack will face danger. This is certain. To determine the auspiciousness of camping tonight: if the deities Taiyi, Tian Gang, and Tai Chong are positioned on the day's stem and branch, there may be incidents of fleeing and disturbance, so one should prepare weapons and be vigilant. To examine the year and month, one should calculate based on the hour of conflict. If the general's year stem is exactly at this position, then when the army departs, the general will face danger, and one must perform rituals to appease and avoid loss. Old annotations say: place the month general on the obtained hour, and if the stem and branch show the star Kuai Gang, the army will be in disorder. If the general's year stem is Kuai Gang, then one should perform rituals to appease.

When examining "six harms," one should look within the useful god, general god, and the three transmissions. "Six harms" refer to deities that hinder each other. If these are found among these, it indicates that the other party will act swiftly. If combined with a malevolent general, it becomes even more dangerous. At this time, if one does not take measures to retreat, one is sure to suffer misfortune. The latter three, latter five, and former four generals, along with the year branch and day branch, if they are conflicted by the day branch and also subjected to punishment and harm, the party that suffers the punishment will be defeated by others. Remember this rule well, for it is indeed reliable. When analyzing, one should take the deity governing the current year's heaven. If it overcomes the nobleman, it indicates deceit and falsehood. If it also meets the wealth star and mother star and the six harmonies, it becomes even more deceptive, and one must be cautious to prevent injury to others.

It is said that if the enemy retreats, the main reference should be the "Great Auspicious" (Da Ji) and the "Chou God" (Chou Shen). If it appears in the preceding hour, it indicates the enemy has not yet retreated; if it appears in the following hour, the news is false and should not be believed. Whether the enemy has truly retreated or not should be carefully considered. If the gods in the chart overcome the Day Branch and are accompanied by the "Star of Movement" (Tian Ma), then the news is true and the enemy has definitely retreated, and this omen is indeed reliable. Passing through dangerous terrain is most unfavorable if the "Heavenly Gang" (Tian Gang) is present. If the Heavenly Gang is added to the four young branches (Si Meng), proceeding forward may not be pleasant; if it is added to the four middle branches (Si Zhong), one may suffer injury; if it is added to the four old branches (Si Ji), it indicates the rear troops will flee.

When marching through the battlefield, the "Yushen" (God of Punishment) of each season is considered凶 (unfavorable). In spring it is at Mao, in summer at Wu, and the rest follow in sequence; thunder is at Zhen, and in the year of Chen, the position of Gen is also unfavorable, and they should not meet. If they do meet, it will result in losing merit. The "Youdu" general spirit, if it occurs together with aInauspicious Sha (malevolent killing), the harm will be doubled; if it meets "De Xiang" (favorable town) and has a good spirit combining with the general, and it is superimposed without mutual control, it will instead add auspiciousness, indicating the enemy will surrender and our army will be strong. If the "Youdu" general spirit controls the day branch and also controls the year of action, the army should be strictly guarded; if the troops engage in battle at this time, it will certainly bring disaster. At this time, retreating is considered wise.

The main general's year pillar should be able to overcome the 'You Du' palace. If it can overcome this palace, it indicates a great victory, often resulting in capturing the enemy's leader, capturing half of the enemy forces, and defeating or subduing the other half. The 'You Du' general is of the same type as 'Xuan Wu' and 'Gou Chen'; 'Bai Hu' and the year general should also be carefully examined. If these凶 generals are in a state of weakness and decline, they will not harm people; but if they are prosperous and strong, they will instead harm themselves. Regarding the 'Xuan Wu' general, the method of judgment is the same as before: if the three later positions do not come to overcome it, it is a great victory; if the three later positions do overcome it, it is generally a凶 outcome. One must carefully distinguish between these situations.

The deity Gou Chen is most忌 to be overcome by the main general's year pillar. If Gou Chen overcomes the year pillar, it often indicates defeat and loss; if the year pillar is not overcome, then merits and achievements will be complete. One must carefully examine and explain this. Old annotations say: When Gou Chen overcomes Xuan Wu, it indicates victory for our side. When malevolent deities and generals overcome the main general's year pillar, it is naturally unfavorable; but if the year pillar overcomes the first four positions in reverse, it signifies a victorious start in battle, and one may rejoice and bravely advance. For the outcome of military battles, if the chart contains 'six harms,' it is ominous. If further accompanied by evil deities and generals, one should only hold firm and wait for favorable weather and auspicious conditions, remaining cautious and vigilant, and avoid advancing forcefully.

The "You Du" deity appears on the day stem, and the event will occur on the same day; if it appears on the hour stem, the event will happen the next day; if it is not found on the stem and branch, take the previous deity to predict, and the event will occur within two or three days of hardship. If it is heard that the enemy has retreated, one should carefully examine the "Heavenly Gang": if the Heavenly Gang is in the four beginning directions, the enemy has not yet retreated; if it suddenly appears in the four middle directions, it indicates they are discussing retreat; if it appears in the four end directions, they have already moved to another place. The deities of the three transmissions should be sought according to the day's stem and branch. If the deity is found on the stem or branch, do not engage in battle; if the three deities are overcome, the army will be secure, and it is certain that the enemy's flag will be captured.

In the lesson, evil omens are most dangerous when encountering the "feminine warrior" deity. In spring it is "transmission," in summer it is "bright ascent," in autumn it is in the寅 (Yin) branch, and in winter it is in the巳 (Si) branch; these are all likely to harm people. Only when the day branch is close to the favored deity can the situation be resolved. When casting a lesson for military operations and encountering "hidden chant" — when the three transmissions and four lessons overlap without movement — the military situation is concealed and does not act, naturally making it unsuitable for the army to advance; one must also be concerned about potential conspiracies and unexpected changes along the way. Those who examine the lesson should be able to recognize this subtle aspect, and should not only look for auspicious deities but also pay attention to the lesson pattern. When casting a lesson for military operations, the most dangerous is "reverse chant" — when the three transmissions and four lessons conflict with each other, causing things to reverse and become chaotic. If encountering the favored deity, it can still resolve and dispel the danger; but if encountering an evil deity, immediate defeat and calamity will come, causing internal unrest within the army.

The "Flashing Flame" is the malevolent force of the fire deities Jia and Yi. If it appears in the metal direction, it indicates that enemy forces have already retreated, there will be no warfare, and no harm will be done. However, once it is activated, difficulties and troubles will become more severe. In the divination chart, "White Tiger" refers to the metal deities Geng and Xin. If it is located in the eastern direction, it signifies the arrival of treacherous people. If the "Heavenly Gang" is added to the four young months, its approach is as swift as a god, requiring constant and diligent vigilance. The most accurate indication in the chart is when "Warrior General" appears together. Old annotations state that the positions of the generals in the four seasons and four young months, which are opposite to "War," are considered. If "Warrior General" resides with a favorable general and they mutually generate, and if it is prosperous and strong, it will bring even greater honor.

When casting a divination, it is best if the upper god and the lower god are mutually generating. If the upper god controls the lower one, there will be loss. If an evil general is involved, there will be fear. If a joyful general is present, there will be joy without conflict. Which of the evils is the most severe? The Heavenly Dog is the most harmful. If there is noInauspicious Sha but only the good gods turning evil in sequence, it is still mild. If the Heavenly Thunder is present along with it, it is not a problem. However, if the Three Killings are involved, it needs further consideration. The Gou Chen and the Black Tortoise generals are close to each other. If they are accompanied byInauspicious Sha, they become evil. If they also meet mutual control, it is unfavorable for the army. As long as there is a煞, it will come to invade.

Among the three types of punishments, the mostvicious is the Heavenly Gang. If it falls on the branches of the four seasons and is placed on the day stem, and if it is opposed by the four evils, there will certainly be mutual harm, and at night there is even more fear and confusion. Old annotations say: if the Heavenly Gang is on the day stem, it indicates the death of a general; if it is on the day branch, it indicates the death of a minor general; if both the day stem and day branch have the Heavenly Gang, then both generals will die. In a lesson involving fear and alarm, one should carefully examine the day stem. If the branches of Chen, Si, and Tai Chong are on the day stem, and if they are also accompanied by the螣蛇 and Vermilion Bird, then danger will occur, and even turning the lesson over will be the same. Old annotations say: if the Great Auspicious is on the day stem, one should leave quickly and not stay; if Tai Chong is on the Chen branch, there will certainly be storms and rain at night; if Shen Hou and Tai Yi are on the day stem or day branch, there will be thieves at night. These deities will definitely come to fruition when they are prosperous and strong, but if they are weak, they will not come to pass. In a lesson involving fear and alarm, one should look at the three earthly branches of Chen, Si, and Mao. If there are noInauspicious Sha together but only the Heavenly Gang and the Star of Movement are together, then this lesson will cause harm to people, and all kinds of evil spirits will gather around.

The origin of hidden matters is determined by whether it is a yang or yin day. On a yang day, the middle transmission is used; on a yin day, the final transmission is used. This is important to remember. Understanding this allows one to trace the source of events and investigate accordingly. To capture thieves or fugitives, use the "Black Tortoise" to determine the three transmissions. If the three transmissions mutually control each other, the thief can be captured. If they mutually generate without controlling, then there is no chance of capturing them. Remember this well, for it is not empty talk. If the three transmissions mutually control and also control the day stem, the thief is likely to be caught soon. One must act decisively and quickly to succeed. If the thief moves or hides, they may disturb the army. Once they move out of the day's range, they will be difficult to find.

In divination, the 'Teng Sha' indicates sudden worries, the 'Zhu Que' signifies fire-related matters and also concerns messages and official documents. One must carefully and thoroughly analyze these. If the 'Bai Hu' appears in the three transmissions, and it is in a state of mutual control, it indicates fighting and injury; if the 'Bai Hu' is weak, it does not cause harm, but only suggests the presence of death or loss along the way. The 'Tian Kong' still represents an empty and barren state, even if it is in a strong position, it indicates poverty and lack of resources. When divining about travel, one should analyze day by day. If the 'Qing Long' is strong and the 'Liu He' is present together, then profits from wealth and storage are certain, and one can also gain additional wealth such as silk and fine cloth.

The gods are in the first and second positions, and they also dislike "Gou Chen"; if the latter three positions and the fifth and sixth positions coincide with them, then the divination is unfavorable for the army, and advancing will certainly meet with difficulties. When divining matters concerning generals and military officers, one should examine the day's stem and branch: if "Great Favor" (Zou) in the丑 position and "Minor Favor" (Wei) in the未 position fall on the stem and branch, and if "Heavenly Gang" is added to the four young positions, following the same method, neither side will fight, which is certain. The fifth and sixth positions indicate that our army will suffer injuries. Among the six generals, someone is lying or deceiving; if the day branch does not mutually control the day stem, it is not harmful; but if it does control the day stem, it is inauspicious.

Medical Formulas, Second十九, Sixteen Formulas

A large army has gathered and has been stationed for some time. With many people gathered, their energies accumulate and mingle, creating a stagnant and oppressive atmosphere, which can lead to the outbreak of epidemic and miasmic diseases, causing disaster and danger. The following are the commonly used emergency remedies in the army. I will explain each one to the commander so that they can be prepared in advance within the camp. If there is miasmic disease, take the bones of the hawk and burn them with fire. Burn them at the upper wind direction so that everyone can inhale the smoke, which will eliminate the calamity and ensure health and safety. For cramps and spasms in the feet, use fresh ginger immediately. Take one measure of freshly drawn water, boil it down to five parts, and drink it. The symptoms will immediately subside, and there will be no hindrance. The commander should remember this remedy.

The wound is severe, so quickly cut some horse hair and cow hair, burn them together into ash, and apply it to the wound to stop the bleeding. The swelling and pain will naturally subside, and the skin and blood vessels will become firm. For wounds caused by metal, the herb Angelica sinensis is most effective: chew it finely and apply it to the wound, then take seven parts of warm wine to swallow it. This remedy should be explained in detail to the master. Those injured by metal tools feel an extremely urgent thirst. At this time, it is strictly forbidden to give them water, as drinking water will certainly cause complications; giving them something fatty is acceptable.

Injuries caused by metal weapons, if they occur on the head and the 'Heavenly Granary' point, or on the artery in the arm where the pulse is felt, or within the heart, or on the鸠尾, the five internal organs, and the lower abdomen bladder, are beyond the ability of physicians to treat. Those injured by metal weapons, if the brain marrow flows abnormally, and a boiling sound comes from the neck and throat, with the eyes fixed and severe pain, and blood flowing like a pond or spring, are all considered incurable according to old annotations, and difficult to save. The method of treating metal wounds is to prepare emergency medicine in advance. On the fifth day of the fifth lunar month, at dawn, collect various medicinal herbs, crush them into a paste, mix with lime, and make a medicinal soup to be stored for future use.

A remedy for being poisoned by an arrow and also treating a wound infected by horse sweat: On the Dragon Boat Festival, capture large-headed flies, remove their wings, dry them in the shade, and grind them into a fine powder like frost. Then, make a small incision in the wound and apply the medicine. An old commentary says: After that, use vinegar to mix flour and apply it on paper to cover the wound, which can draw out the poison. If someone in the army suffers from a carbuncle or abscess, take the moist soil from under the fecal pan, grind it into a fine powder and sieve it, then apply it to the affected area. Then mix it with pig gallbladder juice. For a person suffering from cholera with vomiting and diarrhea, there is a skillful remedy: two liang of ginger must be processed, one liang of banana peel with the skin removed and boiled, and five liang of rhubarb that has been burned. An old commentary says: Burn the rhubarb, grind it into powder, and make pills the size of Chinese toon seeds using honey. Take three pills each time, until there is a bowel movement; if there is no bowel movement, take them with rice porridge.

Acute laryngeal obstruction can be effectively treated with green mugwort juice: simply drop it down and the condition will naturally resolve, with the stagnant blood breaking out and the airway becoming unobstructed. If left untreated, it can be life-threatening, so it must be remembered and carefully attended to. In the month of winter, when mugwort has no leaves and its branches are withered, one should quickly search through the grass to find bedstraw seeds, burn them to produce smoke, and inhale it into the mouth, which will naturally relieve the laryngeal obstruction. Prompt treatment is essential to prevent serious consequences. In military camps where there are many people, they often have to wade through water and endure frost, causing their hands, feet, and facial skin to crack and become rough. Boil wheat leaves thoroughly, filter the juice, and use the hot liquid to wash the affected areas, which will restore health. Mountain miasma and toxic vapors in valley areas can be treated with constant mountain (Changshan), combined with a single clove garlic and dried plum flesh. Boil them with wine and take the mixture promptly to recover. Remember this good advice. The old annotations state: use two taels of constant mountain, one tael of single clove garlic, and twenty dried plums, all crushed and sliced, then decoct with two gourds of wine until reduced to one gourd, and divide into two doses. Take the first dose before the illness occurs and the second dose when it has already begun.

The Third十 Formula for Horse Medicine: Four Formulas

When giving medicine to a horse, use Huangbai (Phellodendron bark), Huanglian (Coptis), Shengma (Cimicifuga), Dahuang (Rhubarb), Shanzhizi (Gardenia), Huyan (Potassium nitrate), Qingdai (Indigo), and Yujin (Curcuma), all in equal amounts, without any being more or less than the others. The method of examining a horse involves checking its age: if the horse's nose shows the character 「Jin」 (gold), it is eighteen years old; if it shows 「Si」 (four), it is eight years old, not yet old; if it shows 「Ba」 (eight), it is over four years old.

If the horse's nose shows a red color, it is exactly twenty years old; if it shows a blue color, it is thirty years old; if there is a 'gong' character mark, it should be counted as twenty-five years. These signs are most clear. When a horse gets a fever, quickly take the liver of a mink along with its intestines, remove the feces and wash it clean, then boil it into a decoction and feed it to the horse, and it will be safe. Remember this well.
