Heavenly mist does not occur only in a particular season. When yang energy fails to unfold properly with the seasons, yin energy condenses into mist. If yin energy cannot harmonize with the yang above, the mist remains dense and does not dissipate. This is the result of evil qi in the heavens and earth. The events it presages are hard to determine precisely, and can only be generally considered ominous. When mist appears in the sky, one must observe it for five to seven days before making a judgment. During this time, if rain frequently occurs and the mist dissipates with the rain, it is a sign of peace. But if there is no rain at all, there will be an outbreak of plague, with many people falling ill and continuous misfortunes. The military must especially take precautions against disease. When two armies are facing each other, if the mist comes from the enemy's side, dense as falling rain, swift in its approach, and blinding like smoke, it indicates that the enemy's cavalry and infantry are about to attack simultaneously. One must immediately form ranks for battle and set up many decoy forces in the mist to prevent unexpected conflicts.

On the day of military deployment, if the fog persists all day without clearing, appearing like dew falling mixed with rain, this is called "heaven weeping," a sign that heaven is shedding tears. In such a case, the army should halt and not advance, rewarding the troops to calm their minds, waiting until the heavenly signs become favorable before making any further moves. When prolonged darkness produces fog with a reddish hue, which is then blown upward by black winds, this indicates that warfare will occur on the same day in the flat plains. One should act swiftly to be prepared, or leave promptly, and must not delay or hesitate. If the fog forms on the walls of the city or camp, resembling hanging corpses, the general must be alert to this omen. The camp should be immediately moved. If not, the misfortune will fall upon the general himself.

Within the military camp, heavy fog has persisted for several days, dense and not dispersing day or night. At this time, when two armies are facing each other, the invading force, which comes from afar, will be the first to retreat in disorder. The defending army should arrange its ranks and pursue the retreating enemy. Within the city camp, thick fog rises from the city walls, white like smoke. This indicates that warfare is about to begin, and within three or five days, there will be combat with weapons. One should prepare in advance and guard against enemy cavalry moving around from outside.

A large mass of yellow mist rises prominently, obscuring mountains and rivers, sometimes gathering and sometimes dispersing. This indicates that the enemy is employing deceptive strategies and one must also be cautious of internal collaborators secretly conspiring with the external forces; if not detected, blood will be spilled in the fields. The mist surrounds the city on all sides, yet there is none inside the city, which is a sign that heaven is aiding this city, and the city itself possesses military strength. Attempting to attack such a city will be unsuccessful; the defending side only needs to be cautious and hold firm, and naturally will remain secure.

Divination on Clouds and Mist, Sixth (In the Beijing edition, it is listed as the twenty-sixth) · Eleven verses

Divination of the color of the morning glow indicates that it resembles clouds but is not formed by clouds. Its shape resembles clouds, yet it is not clouds; it looks like a sweeping broom, with a complex and varied appearance. Those who understand the principles can discern its cause and the implications it holds. On the day of military action, one should look back at the glow in front. On days when the day stem is Jia or Yi (wood), one should avoid encountering white glow, as white belongs to metal, which overcomes wood. On days when the day stem is Bing or Ding (fire), one should avoid black glow in front, as black belongs to water, which overcomes fire. If these two situations occur, a major battle is certain, and the prediction will be accurate. On the day of military action, the color of the glow should be considered in conjunction with the day stem and branch. Even if there is a major battle ahead, if the glow's color supports the day stem, victory is expected. However, if the glow's color conflicts with the day stem, it is not advisable to go to war. The original commentary gives an example: on days with Jia or Yi (wood) stems, encountering yellow glow, and on days with Wu or Ji (earth) stems, encountering black glow, both are considered conflicting.

Observing the霞气, one must use the Heavenly Stem and Earthly Branch of the day to determine fortune or misfortune. If the color of the霞 matches the day's Earthly Branch, then advancing with troops will surely result in victory in battle, allowing expansion of territory and the accumulation of vast treasures. The enemy's forces will also be driven to submit. On the day of military campaign, one should use the five colors of the气 to discern omens of disaster or auspicious signs. If the general's surname is associated with the 'Jue' tone, which belongs to wood, he should avoid encountering white霞气; if his surname is associated with the 'Yu' tone, which belongs to water, he should avoid yellow霞气; if his surname is associated with the 'Gong' tone, which belongs to earth, he should avoid the color of green and blue. These are all cases of being overcome. If the general's surname is associated with the 'Shang' tone, which belongs to metal, he should avoid encountering red霞气; if his surname is associated with the 'Zhi' tone, which belongs to fire, he should avoid black霞 and black气. These colors that overcome the general are called 'ghost thieves', leading to mutual injuries. They should not be regarded as trivial matters.

The sky above the city and camp shows five colors of qi and bright霞光, which are all omens of defeat for the army. One should plan ahead and be vigilant, otherwise there will be many casualties. Sometimes霞 and qi appear together. If the qi is yellow, red, or white, it is favorable; if the霞 is black, it should be interpreted in the same way. The subtle differences depend on the skill of the wise diviner. The shape of the霞 resembles a tiger, and the clouds then change into a dragon. When dragon and tiger meet, there will certainly be a battle between the two armies. The outcome of the battle should also be considered according to the wind direction. If the wind favors us, the misfortune will fall upon the enemy.

On the day of military departure, the most dangerous thing is having a red haze blocking the straight path ahead. If the red haze comes from behind us and the wind is favorable, then even if the enemy's vanguard is sharp, our rear ranks can remain broad and well-ordered, ensuring the safety of our troops. When attacking a city or fortress, first determine the clarity and flow of the water source. If there is a large river upstream that can be breached to flood the city, there is no need for close combat, which would unnecessarily waste soldiers. However, one must not indulge in cruelty and use water attacks recklessly, causing harm to innocent civilians.

Divination on Rainbows, Seventh (The Beijing edition says "Divination on Rainbows, Ninth") · Eleven Verses

The appearance of a rainbow is caused by rain mist illuminated by sunlight, appearing either to the east or west. If a rainbow is seen in the west in the morning, it indicates that the rain has not yet stopped. If a rainbow is seen in the east in the evening, it suggests that the Heavenly General is about to clear the sky and the sun will reappear. Diviners should carefully observe the direction and time of its appearance. When a rainbow spans across the road during military movement, with the rainbow crossing the road, it signifies that the path ahead is blocked, indicating hidden troops blocking the way. One should be on high alert. Careful deliberation is needed, and the camp should be moved to avoid disaster; even if advancing forcefully, this campaign will ultimately fail to expand territory. If a rainbow appears over an enemy's fortress, that fortress can be captured. If a rainbow directly enters our camp, it indicates an outbreak of disease. A faint rainbow suggests the presence of miasma within the army. These situations should be clearly distinguished, and the camp should be moved to avoid disaster.

Rainbow appearing in red and white colors indicates obstruction in military movement. If the rainbow appears like a bridge blocking the road, the army should halt in place, reward the soldiers, and soon return. If the rainbow hangs down like a spear inserted into a well, it signifies defeat. If a mouse-like vapor appears over the camp, battle will result in blood pooling in the ground. It is advisable to avoid fighting and to defend the city and camp as the top priority. If the rainbow resembles the halo around the sun and moon or looks like a bent bow; or if white rainbows appear intermittently, with five or six appearing over the city or camp, these portend bloodshed. The commentary in the Jingben says: this phenomenon may also be interpreted as occurring in the fifth or sixth month.

A rainbow appears, shaped like a bow, and also appears broken and intermittent like a halo. This indicates that after the army starts its campaign, it will return within five days. If it remains for a long time without disappearing, disaster is certain. A white or red rainbow appears alone, with only one strand and no second one; it rises straight up into the sky like vapor, or stretches across the sky. This is the appearance of the "Chiyu Flag," indicating great military conflict. The side where the rainbow appears will certainly suffer. The beginning and end of the rainbow stretch straight from the ground to the sky. When this rainbow appears without rain, and it is seen on a clear day, it indicates that blood will flow like a river, and the people will also suffer calamity.

A white rainbow appearing visible in daylight, stretching from the ground through the blue sky, will bring disorder to the area it covers. People will be confused and troubled, and disasters will follow within a year, fulfilling this omen. When white or red rainbows are visible in daylight, it is not advisable to launch military campaigns. If there are also rainbows hanging low over the military camp, disaster will strike the army, resulting in the death of a general. One should cease all actions; any rash movement will lead to calamity and hardship.

Divination on Rain, Eighth (In the Beijing edition it is listed as the second) · Seventeen verses

All discussions about rain depend on the interaction between yin and yang energies: when the energy rises, it forms clouds; when it descends, it becomes rain. If it is raining during a military campaign, one must consider the rain together with omens of good or bad fortune, and a capable general must carefully examine the situation. When a large army is on the move, or just outside the city gates, and encounters torrential thunderstorms and swollen streams blocking the path, this is called "Mu Shi," a凶 omen, and the army should not proceed further, for it is not advisable to challenge the will of heaven. If the army is about to set out and heavy rain immediately turns the ground into mud, this is also called "Mu Shi," and the army should immediately halt its march and choose another auspicious day and time. Forcing forward will surely bring disaster. The Jing Ben commentary cites the "Jun Chen" saying: if on the day of a military campaign there is a violent storm with heavy rain, and the banners are blown down without stopping, this is heaven's anger, and military action should not proceed; one must wait until the heavenly signs are harmonious and clear, and then choose another day to depart.

On the day the army sets out, light rain gently falls as the troops advance, which is called "moistening the army," benefiting the soldiers. At this time, the banners point forward with great spirit, and wherever they go, they will surely win. When the army is about to move forward, the banners are wrapped around the spears, and the sky is partly rainy and partly sunny, with a haze passing over. At this time, it is advisable to stay and camp in place, carefully consider the situation; if they proceed hastily, they will find it difficult to resist in battle. For several days, the weather is partly rainy and partly sunny. Within the main camp, there are people forming factions and plotting rebellion. If it first becomes clear and then rains, the rebellion will not succeed, and they can be captured. If it first rains and then becomes clear, the rebellion will arise.

On the day of military departure, strong winds and rain hit the soldiers face to face. This is a deliberate warning from heaven, advising me to remember not to advance; advancing may endanger myself, and once on the battlefield, the entire army may be destroyed. The "Military Movement Classic" says: when marching, if encountering fierce storms that blow down flags and weapons, and continuous heavy rain, this is heaven's anger, and the army should not advance; one should wait until the weather is harmonious and clear, and choose another auspicious day and direction for departure, then the military campaign will be favorable. If strange objects fall from the sky, having form but no sound, such omens indicate impending disaster and invasion. There will be incidents of loyal ministers being executed and the state in peril. At this time, remaining steadfast and unmoving is the way to ensure safety. If blood rain falls from the sky, it signifies the retreat of virtuous people and the rise of wicked ministers. Blood staining military armor is not a good omen; one should quickly relocate the camp, reward the troops to appease the situation, otherwise innocent people may suffer wrongful punishment.

Birds falling from the sky, or parts of birds such as claws or wings, if they fall on the enemy's side, indicate the enemy's defeat; if they fall on our side, our army will be restless and certainly suffer losses among the troops. If crickets or similar insects fall from the sky, even if they fall on the enemy's side, it is not advisable for our side to launch an attack; if turtles or fish fall, both are ominous signs. If our army sees such strange rain, they should retreat and return; if they remain in place without moving, they will surely face misfortune. If hair or similar things fall from the sky, it indicates that the commander-in-chief is listening to wicked and deceitful people. One should be cautious and self-disciplined, and firmly hold the camp, not treating such unusual events lightly—this is a warning from heaven to the sovereign.

Heaven is clear with neither clouds nor mist, yet rain falls under such bright skies, which is called "heaven weeping," indicating unavoidable misfortune and the commander's unrest. Black clouds appear, crossing the Milky Way, making it seem as if its form has been completely changed. This foretells rain the next day, a prediction that has never failed. Lightning flashes across the Milky Way, and the next day torrential rain comes, pouring like water from a basin, flooding the flat land with vast pools of water.

The moon produces a halo, which covers the Three Stars mansion; or if the halo covers the Well mansion, it indicates rain. The effect will occur within five to seven days, precisely accurate, and at that time heavy rain will pour down like a basin being emptied. Dense dark clouds appear, and the rainstorm approaches heavily, suddenly a thunderclap erupts ahead. Heavenly thunder shocks and approaches forcefully, but in such a situation the rainfall is not heavy.

Divination on Thunder, Ninth (In the Beijing edition, listed as the twenty-fifth) · Thirty-one verses

Heavenly Stems: Jia, Yi, Bing, Ding, Wu, Ji, Geng, Xin, Ren, Gui Earthly Branches: Zi, Chou, Yin, Mao, Chen, Si, Wu, Wei, Shen, You, Xu, Hai Trigrams: Qian (Heaven), Dui (Lake), Li (Fire), Zhen (Thunder), Xun (Wind), Kan (Water), Gen (Mountain), Kun (Earth) When the energy of the Yang Heaven reaches its peak, it emerges from beneath the earth and transforms into thunder. If thunder does not sound when it should or sounds when it should not, this is an abnormal phenomenon known as "non-seasonal thunder," which indicates the outbreak of warfare and famine. The method of divining thunder is most concerned with thunder occurring at the wrong time. This is often due to the local officials neglecting their duties and mismanaging affairs: being harsh to the people, acting unjustly for personal gain, and all of this is seen by Heaven. Heaven then becomes angry and shows its power through thunder to destroy their authority. When a general sees this omen, he should first examine his military and administrative conduct to see if there are any mistakes. On the day of an expedition, if there is a sudden storm with fierce winds and thunder, the war horses get startled and the flagpoles break. When wind and thunder occur together with broken flags and startled horses, this indicates that the army is already in disorder. It foretells that there will certainly be enemy forces waiting ahead, and a bloody battle is expected. It is advisable to first整顿 the ranks and send out more scouts to investigate, and not to advance rashly.

On the day of the military campaign, if clouds and thunder arise at the same time: if the clouds follow our army forward and the thunder follows behind, this is a sign that heavenly power and spirits are protecting the army, and the campaign will surely be successful. If thunder shakes above our army's camp, it indicates that heaven is aiding us with its power, and the army will achieve victory; but if the thunder echoes above the enemy's camp, then our army will labor in vain. We must carefully determine the direction from which the thunder comes before deciding to advance or retreat. Why does thunder suddenly occur during the three winter months? This is a sign of excessive yang energy, which is favorable to the invading army that comes from afar, but unfavorable to the defending army that is stationed in place. If the invading army raises its banners and attacks first, it will surely win; but if it delays and acts later, it will achieve nothing.

Lightning and thunder split trees and other objects. If this occurs above the enemy's camp, it indicates that heavenly power and killing energy are gathering against the enemy, making it difficult for our side to resist; we can only secure stability by relocating the camp. If only one thunderclap is heard above the camp and then stops, it signifies a message being conveyed once and then ceased, which certainly means an imperial decree is about to arrive quickly, or there is an urgent imperial order concerning military affairs. The commander should remain attentive and wait quietly for the news, without alarm. If suddenly, above the city or town where the military camp is located, a sound similar to thunder but not exactly like thunder is heard, this is mostly an omen of land collapse or subsidence, or a conflict among the generals.

On the day of military deployment, the wind carried the sound of thunder towards me, indicating that those destined for military service should be doubly cautious. It is not advisable to act rashly, for otherwise there may be injury and danger, and if encountering the enemy, certain defeat will follow. The Jing Ben commentary states: Thunder and lightning are the vital energies of heaven and earth; a single occurrence can alarm all things. Those who use force should especially perform worship. Whenever thunder occurs, soldiers should wear armor and draw their bows in response, and such an army will receive heavenly assistance. When the sky is clear with no clouds, and suddenly a loud thunderous sound echoes, or like lightning startling a pheasant, this is a sign of dragons appearing, indicating calamity and punishment. The military manual says: This is called "Heaven's Drum," which also signifies military disaster and fire hazards; another interpretation suggests it is due to the movement of dragons.

The general and his troops, suddenly a thunderclap is heard in the place where they are stationed, and after that there is no further thunder. This indicates that the general and his troops will certainly take action and start a military campaign; the place where the thunder is heard is the place where they can strike first. In the three months of spring, on the days of Jiazi, Gengyin, Yichou, Wuzi, and Xinmao, if there is thunder and lightning, it is likely to cause injury to people; there will be a great battle within the month and the ten days. When about to fight and in the midst of battle, if thunder is heard: if the thunder originates from our side and spreads to the enemy, the enemy will surely be defeated and our side will win; conversely, if the thunder comes from the enemy and spreads to our side, the situation will be the opposite.

When the sky remains overcast for many days without rain, and suddenly there is thunder echoing above our army, this indicates that we will gain victory ahead and have the upper hand in all situations. Conversely, if the thunder sounds above the enemy's position, our army will be in danger. If thunder sounds simultaneously from all four directions, circling around and reverberating unpredictably, we should avoid battle and not hesitate. If we insist on a major confrontation, both armies will suffer losses. If the thunder is deep and resonant, with a long and continuous sound, originating from above our army, then going to war will certainly be without hindrance, and will actually strengthen our army's momentum.

Lightning resounds, with thunderous sounds above the general's headquarters. Immediate search must be carried out without delay, for there are hidden traitors within the camp. The search cannot be slow or procrastinated. Dark clouds gather, surging like a river rushing down. If there is first a loud thunderclap, then rain will not be heavy at that time. When interpreting this omen, it should be straightforward and not biased towards one side. Thunder suddenly resounds, causing people in the affected area to be startled. If the sound resembles thunder but is not thunder, with an abnormally furious tone, and it occurs directly above our army, then our army will surely suffer a setback. We should move the camp to avoid worry and alarm.

Thunder roars continuously for several days, which corresponds to many instances of broken trust in the human world: officials cannot be honest and abide by the law, so Heaven uses thunder to warn people. After the thunder, hail falls, followed by falling snow, indicating that yin energy has overwhelmed yang energy. This portends a treacherous minister about to cause disorder, matters are suspicious, and officials in charge will also suffer losses; they must be prepared in advance. On the day of military action, if thunder originates from our army, Heaven is using its divine power to assist, and our army will achieve a great victory; if thunder occurs above the enemy's army, our army will face misfortune. Carefully distinguish where the thunder is coming from.

On the day of the military campaign, if both the霞气 (misty light) and thunder sound simultaneously: the霞气 follows our army, while the thunder follows the enemy's army. This indicates that the heavenly mandate responds to both sides, and our army may pause slightly before proceeding, ensuring the mission will succeed. On the day of the military campaign, one must determine the direction from which the thunder sounds. If the thunder originates from above our camp, it signifies a great victory for our forces and injury to the enemy, indicating that heaven's favor is aiding us. (The following seven sections are added according to the Jingben edition.) On the day of the military campaign, if the thunder sounds toward the enemy's side, it indicates the enemy's victory and our defeat; we should cease hostilities. Otherwise, the cities and camps will surely suffer. It is advisable to plan ahead and avoid launching the campaign at this time.

Within the military camp, there is neither rain nor cloud, yet suddenly thunder strikes above the camp. This portends a great defeat for the army, and they should quickly relocate their camp, otherwise disaster will arrive immediately. The omen of thunder is to be interpreted according to the direction from which the thunder first sounds: if it originates from the Qian position, it indicates the mobilization of a large army; if from the Kan position, it signifies major water obstacles to the march; if from the Gen position, it indicates illness affecting the camp. The omen of thunder, if it first sounds from the Zhen position, indicates that grain prices will rise sharply that year, and provisions should be stored in advance to relieve the military and civilians; if it originates from the Xun position, it foretells a drought.

Divination signs of thunder indicate initial movement in the position of fire, suggesting possible fire and drought disasters; movement in the earth position indicates damage to crops, both of which should be addressed with rituals to avert misfortune; movement in the lake position indicates sudden military conflict, leading to immediate warfare. If the general's surname is associated with the sound 'Shang' (商), which belongs to metal, thunder in the fire position is unfavorable as fire overcomes metal. If the surname is associated with 'Jue' (角), which belongs to wood, thunder in the lake or heaven positions is unfavorable as metal overcomes wood, while the thunder and wind positions are its own. If the surname is associated with 'Yu' (羽), which belongs to water, caution is needed in the earth, mountain, and central positions, as earth overcomes water. If the surname is associated with 'Zheng' (徵), which belongs to fire, thunder in the water position is unfavorable as water overcomes fire. When the emperor personally leads the campaign, use the emperor's surname; otherwise, use the general's surname, combined with the day's heavenly stem, and determine based on the five elements' generation and overcoming in the eight directions. A mnemonic states: on days of Jia and Yi, avoid the lake and heaven directions; on days of Bing and Ding, avoid the water direction; on days of Wu and Ji, be cautious of thunder and wind; on days of Geng and Xin, avoid the fire direction; on days of Ren and Gui, avoid the mountain and earth directions; the central direction is generally inauspicious. If I overcome the enemy, the enemy will be defeated; if the enemy overcomes me, my forces will be harmed; if I generate the enemy, even with plans, it will be in vain; if the enemy generates me, the enemy will surrender. The heavens' signs indeed come true, and capable generals should carefully consider these signs.

Divination of Heaven, Tenth Chapter · Eleven Verses

The principles of Heaven are compared to a father in human relationships and to a sovereign in the relationship between ruler and subject. When the sky is clear and bright, with splendid light, it signifies smoothness and auspiciousness; but when the sky is dark and the gloomy energy spreads, it indicates the absence of loyal ministers in the court and the close proximity of flatterers and sycophants to the royal court. When the heavenly energy appears red, casting a red glow over the earth, people and objects seem to take on the color of blood from a slaughterhouse. This portends an invading army that will surely engage in fierce battles, followed by calamities and misfortunes. Once the army is defeated, it will scatter in all directions, unable to distinguish east from west. An old commentary includes an example: in the seventh month of the first year of Jiaxu in the reign of Emperor Xianzong of Song, on the sixth day of the first month, the day of Gengchen, at the hour of You, a red cloud several chi high appeared in the sky, casting a blood-red glow on the ground. In the same year, in the twelfth month, the Yuan army crossed the river, and by the year Bingzi, the court surrendered, with the people and soldiers in the Jianghuai region suffering great suffering and devastation.

The sky emits a sorrowful sound accompanied by a resonant vibration, indicating that a new era of righteous rule will surely arise in this region. There will be plots by outsiders and attempts to overthrow the current ruler, while the court lacks virtuous ministers to correct the situation. These events will become evident within a year. A celestial change occurs in the northwest direction, specifically in the position of Heaven. The sky appears split in two, signifying territorial fragmentation, the collapse of established norms, continuous warfare and casualties, and the ruler's anxiety and fear. The sky suddenly splits open, revealing the shape of a pavilion, which portends chaos and turmoil in the world. Previously auspicious signs will transform into ominous portents. Such celestial anomalies are specifically meant to warn people. (The first five verses are missing in the original text and have been supplemented based on the Xin and Sichuan versions.)

The Milky Way suddenly splits open, forming the shape of a spear tip and a spear blade. When this omen occurs, military conflicts will surely arise, and all the states, prefectures, and commanderies will be plunged into anxiety and suffering, with the people suffering throughout the mountains and rivers. The sky turns pale, dark and hazy, remaining long gloomy without rain. This indicates there will be secret plots, inevitably leading to warfare. The matter will be blocked and difficult to resolve. It will take a year before the full course of events becomes clear. The sky suddenly makes a loud noise, echoing across the heavens. This is mostly an omen of emotional resonance between father and son in the human world. When the sky makes a sound, it is like ministers being angry and the sovereign should reflect upon it. At this time, the ruler should reduce punishments in response.

The sky is gloomy, turning from pale white to deep yellow, indicating that there will certainly be strong winds for two or three days. Boats should hurry to anchor and not linger on the water; they should promptly inform people to prepare for the coming weather. Suddenly, a red and yellow rainbow appears in the sky, stretching across the Big Dipper and surrounding the North Star. This portends that the monarch will have a wise and extraordinary successor, or that an extraordinary ruler will be born. This prediction is very accurate. The sky has been dry for a long time without rain, not even a single drop of water. This indicates a disorder in the natural order, with rain failing to moisten the land, causing concern. In such a year, how can the crops be bountiful? The military provisions must be planned for in advance.

Divination by Day, Eleventh (In the Beijing edition it is listed as sixth) · Fifty-six verses

The position of the Sun in divination signifies the ruler and corresponds to the position of the sovereign. Its omens relate to the monarch and state affairs: if the Sun moves smoothly and follows its regular course, the country will be peaceful; but if it becomes dark or an eclipse occurs, it indicates calamity and disturbance. If red clouds appear around the Sun, shaped like a hanging bell, which is a symbol of mourning and red signifies military omen, the commander on the side where this appearance occurs will die. Regardless of the season, any action will be fruitless, and at this time it is most advisable to hold back and remain in defense. When the Sun produces a halo, with two layers overlapping, it certainly indicates the defeat of a general in the enemy country; even if someone plots to dominate a region, their strategies will not succeed, and ultimately, weapons will be drawn.

The Star of brightness and prestige has white vapor on both sides resembling a rainbow, crossing over the side of the sun. This omen has traditionally been associated with warfare, indicating a great battle with rivers of blood. Its origin lies in the ruler's failure to govern properly, leading to the emergence of natural anomalies. Such strange phenomena cannot be dispelled by rituals or offerings; they can only be resolved by improving governance and correcting past mistakes. When the sun's light produces a halo, and there is also a 'ear-like' appendage on the side of the sun, accompanied by a cold wind, this is a sign of a short-lived atmospheric disturbance. If this occurs on both sides simultaneously, it is a favorable omen. If these three changes occur together on the same day branch, it is called the sun and moon being enveloped by a net. According to military texts, if the sun displays a halo in the open field, it indicates the arrival of surrendered troops and generals. When the sun produces a halo, one should determine the direction of its缺口 (defect). The direction opposite the缺口 should be guarded against for good fortune. If the halo is round and has no缺口, there is no need for concern; this merely indicates heavy rain within three days.

The Star of brightness and prestige is directly in the middle with a halo. A halo above the sun is called "cover," and one below is called "tassel." Facing the direction of the halo is ominous, while facing away from it is auspicious. If there is no battle at that time, it indicates rumors or a rain caused by霞气. A sun halo cannot encircle the sun; instead, it hangs on both sides, indicating someone within the city is plotting but fails. At this time, one should calmly move and observe military situations, as the enemy will not accomplish anything. If the air around the halo moves inward toward the halo, it indicates a guest army from outside will win, and attacking in the direction of the air movement will result in a great victory. If the air suddenly rises outward from the halo, the enemy army will be defeated. The outcome can be clearly predicted by this single detail.

The "ear" (珥) appearing beside a solar halo indicates a single one signifies joyous events approaching; if there are two, it suggests reconciliation between both parties. There is also an interpretation that it signifies the appointment of a general or the conferral of high office, bringing good fortune. The distinctions in this method are quite clear. The "back" (背) aura beside the sun or moon refers to the arc-shaped cloud forming opposite to the sun or moon. If it faces towards me, it is auspicious; if it faces away, it is inauspicious. If the back aura faces east, the western side will achieve victory; if it faces west, the eastern side will accomplish great deeds. The same principle applies to the north and south directions. When divining the sun and moon, one must first determine which is the main and which is the guest. During the day, the sun is the main; at night, the stars and moon are used to assess safety and danger, and the guest side is identified by the cloud aura at that moment. The established rule is: the sun, moon, and stars are the main, while clouds and mist are the guest.

When two armies are facing each other, if two suns appear clearly in the sky, it certainly indicates that one side will abandon their camp and retreat. Under the sun, one can see the enemy abandoning their city, followed by fierce battle. (This verse is missing in the first version, and is added based on the Xin version and the Chuan version.) When two armies are facing each other, the sun is directly over the city and the camp. To determine the outcome of the battle involving bloodshed, one must know who is the host and who is the guest. This omen indicates that the host army will be defeated and the guest army will win. As for the specific timing, one must calculate the degree of the sun's movement. The Xin version and the Chuan version note: this refers to calculating the sun's division. The Jing version notes: one must precisely calculate the sun's division, the method is explained in "Calculating the Sun's Division and Returning to the Original Position" (the thirteenth verse). When the sun is directly in the middle and a halo appears around it, and the sun's surface is pierced by a white rainbow, this indicates that the whole country will soon launch a large-scale military campaign, and also signifies that a loyal hero will seek revenge and clear his grievances, with anger rising straight to the heavens. Old annotations say: this omen appeared when Jing Ke entered the Qin court to assassinate the king.

On the day of military deployment, if an eclipse or partial obscuration of the sun occurs, one should not proceed further to seek a decisive battle. This is a sign from heaven indicating a warning, to make people aware and cautious; if one insists on advancing, the commander-in-chief will find it difficult to return alive. The terms 'guan' and 'ying' both refer to the atmospheric phenomena around the sun: that above the sun is called 'guan', and that below supporting the sun is called 'ying'. Seeing 'guan' is a favorable omen, and the general should be joyful; seeing 'ying' indicates the commander's inner anxiety and gathering worries. If two suns appear in the sky, either briefly or lasting until the next morning, and if such an omen suddenly occurs, it signifies disturbances and chaos arising from the outer territories and the common people. If one still rashly proceeds with military action at this time, it will only lead to sorrowful wailing and calamity.

The aura around the sun appears like a wooden mallet, red in color and bright. When this aura appears, generals should not go out to fight. If they insist on advancing, they will suffer heavy losses, with half the soldiers returning. The halo around the sun forms like a dead snake coiling around it. This omen indicates impending disaster and the loss of generals. The troops sent out will have half of them not returning. The original plan should be changed, and the army should retreat with its forces. (This section is missing in the first version, supplemented from the Xin and Sichuan versions.) The halo around the sun appears on only one side, surrounding the sun. If the direction of the surrounding is favorable to us and faces the enemy, we can launch an attack. If the surrounding direction is unfavorable to us, we will not be able to win in battle. In summary, the decision to go out to fight or not should be based on the direction of this phenomenon.

The qi beneath the Sun appears red and forms three layers. This indicates widespread dispersion and flight across the land, military conflicts arising, people losing their livelihoods, calamities multiplying, and heroes vying for dominance and the throne. Four 'ear'-shaped qi emerge around the Sun, mostly appearing in the four cardinal corners. This signifies the birth of a crown prince within the palace, the birth of a royal son, and approaching joy. A decision can be made within three years, and the armies may temporarily cease hostilities. Black qi passes through both upper and lower parts of the Sun's center. This indicates the eldest son plotting a major rebellion, and it is necessary to quickly investigate the cause, without delay; otherwise, war will break out.

When the two armies are closing in on each other, green qi appears beside the sun, clearly shaped like a half-moon. Following this qi's trend and advancing quickly to attack will surely lead to victory. The sun is clearly surrounded by a shape resembling the character 'eight', and below it there is a form like a group of deer and antelopes running. This indicates the general's defeat, the soldiers' scattering, and calamities arising; one should hold firm in the pass and camp to protect oneself. The cloud qi beside the sun spreads out like an umbrella and appears as rising smoke with starlight within; if red qi like fire appears beside it, it indicates blood pooling in pits. At this time, one should hold firm and not advance.

A mass of cloud appears beside the sun, rising like the peak of Mount Tai, with purple mist swirling around it and not dispersing for a long time. This indicates that the defending forces within the city will achieve victory, while the invading army will be defeated. At the critical moment, one should carefully observe this phenomenon. A cloud covers or passes through the center of the sun, with white mist stretching east and west, spanning the卯 and酉 directions. This indicates a great calamity and disaster for the state, possibly even requiring a change of era and dynasty. Old annotations refer to this dragon as the "Mourning-and-Condolence spirit." Nine luminous stars surround the sun, shining brightly like fire or a lamp. This indicates great chaos across the nine regions, torrential floods, and some say rivers of blood, with the Way of the King in turmoil. It also signifies military conflicts and disasters.

The aura around the Sun resembles cattle fighting, with another figure standing with a spear beside it, but the figure has no head, and the image is indistinct. This indicates that the ancestral temple will be in peril. (The first part of this passage is repeated twice, with the first two lines alternatively stated as "The Sun competes with the Sun at the time of contention.") The aura around the Sun resembles a curtain and flowers, connected and continuous. This indicates that concubines and empresses will disrupt the household, and at the same time, diviners will have an opportunity to demonstrate their skills. The aura around the Sun resembles a pair of scissors, mixed with scattered peach and apricot blossoms. This indicates that the king will lose his governance, and the empress will seize power. At this time, the most appropriate method is to perform purification rituals, maintain cleanliness, and perform rites to remove calamities.

The aura around the Sun resembles a jade disc, round and complete, with a shadow that is full and round like a solar halo. This indicates that ministers from various states will rebel and seize power, attempting to take over the border lands. The old commentary says: this indicates minor officials plotting rebellion and the fragmentation of territory. The Jing Ben commentary says: this indicates minor officials plotting rebellion and the division of states and encroachment upon each other. The aura around the Sun forms the shape of a tree with a stem and roots, with two streams of energy extending horizontally and stretching long. This indicates a disaster of regicide and the suicide of traitorous ministers, which will manifest in accordance with the current emperor's reign. The aura around the Sun resembles a mouse hiding among branches, and also like a chicken spreading its wings. This indicates an imminent great flood causing disaster, and one should relocate camps to high ground. (The Jing Ben commentary repeats this passage twice.)

The Star of Brightness and Prestige has a cloud-like appearance resembling a ship's sail and curtain, with an ambiguous shape, also like a broken boat approaching the shore. If such a cloud appears in the position of Heaven, it indicates the destruction of the imperial capital's foundation; once the sail falls, the situation will collapse. The Star of Brightness has a bright cloud with five colors, and beneath it there is a complete image of deer and antelope fleeing. This indicates the death of loyal ministers and the rise of evil spirits, which should not be neglected. The Star of Brightness has a cross-shaped cloud spread out in the center. A great calamity is about to come, and such a sign is first revealed, indicating wicked people harboring hatred and fabricating omens of good and evil. It is advisable to hold aTaoist ritual ceremony early to eliminate disasters and appease the spirits.

The Star of brightness and prestige has a form resembling a human or soldiers. If it appears on the side of the Fire trigram, the camp should be moved. This indicates a change of dynasty, a great army approaching the outskirts, and only the virtuous can understand the true meaning. The Star of brightness and prestige has a form resembling two hands, along with a round and bright planet. This indicates the queen consort causing misfortune and chaos, which will manifest in the Heaven trigram area. Old annotations record that this phenomenon appeared on the eighteenth day of the second lunar month in the sixth year of the reign of Emperor Xizong of the Tang Dynasty at the hour of the horse. The form of the Star of brightness and prestige resembles raised hands spread apart on both sides, or a broom shape between the two hands. This indicates the emperor's throne will be replaced and divided. If the form remains for a long time, the event will certainly happen. Three annotations state that if the form appears and does not dissipate, the calamity will certainly come to pass.

The qi around the Sun spreads out in a green hue, dispersing like a formation of geese in flight, arranged in separate lines. This indicates that a small foreign state will be oppressed by a treacherous minister, and calamities of rebellion will follow one after another. The qi around the Sun is directly facing between the Dipper mansion and the Ox mansion, and at the same time, a rainbow appears facing it. This indicates that the Three Excellencies will be exiled abroad, and those who go to war will not return alive. The court should not hesitate to make necessary changes. The commentary by the capital says: the ruler's power will therefore be lost on its own. The qi around the Sun mostly appears on the凶神 "Chiyou." When encountering the hours of Shen and You, one should observe the "Xiezhi" phenomenon. The "Sangmen" should be verified during the hours of Shen, Wei, and Wu. Any place where these images appear is enough to cause worry.

The Star of brightness and prestige appears with two ear-like formations outside, indicating a certain event of mutual harmony and friendly relations. Two armies will not have to fight but will form a friendly bond, thus bringing peace to the four seas. The appearance of the clear sky depends on the direction from which the sunlight and moonlight come to clash. If the clash is from the north, the north will be strong; if from the south, the south will be strong; the east and west are also judged in the same way. All divinations concerning the clash of energies are based on this principle. Abnormal sunlight: if it appears yellowish or reddish, it indicates the origin of illness; if it appears white, it often signifies death, accompanied by the outbreak of war, years of misfortune, and the continuous arrival of plague.

On the day when the sun displays five colors, or when the aura has sharp angles and layered layers, this indicates that in the area it governs, the king has lost his authority, indulged in wine and women, and harmed the people. The remedy is to cultivate virtue and eliminate extravagance and arrogance. When the sun appears purple, this is called "Ji Wei Ru." If there is a military action in the area it governs, it is likely to result in defeat. One should cultivate virtue to align with the heavenly wisdom and avoid rash actions, otherwise calamity will arrive immediately. The sun produces "ear": if both sides have ears, the battle is evenly matched, and the side with thicker ear aura will win and gain the victory. If only one side has an ear, that side will win. If there is no battle at that time, it indicates that the two armies will have friendly relations.

The sun appears bluish, indicating that the country corresponding to that region will suffer damage; if it also resembles firelight with fiery shadows, it foretells calamity and harm to loyal ministers, and one should be on guard against enemy invasion. When the sun produces a halo, and the halo is round and layered, one after another, it indicates that ministers will rebel against the ruler and seize land in the border regions. When the sun has four ears, the one on top is called "guan," the ones on the two sides are called "ying," and they should remain all day long; the one directly below is the "lü" symbol, which does not indicate authority. When reporting the divination, one must judge based on whether the sun's face is upright. The military manual says: if the aura is above the sun, it is called "guan," if below, it is called "lü," if on the two sides, it is called "er," and if long and hanging down, it is called "ying"; if they face towards and encircle the sun, it is auspicious.

The Star of brightness and prestige appears with a circular aura beneath it, seeming white but actually tinged with black. This indicates a change of sovereignty, domestic turmoil, and concern over authority, with distress appearing within a day. When the Star of brightness and prestige rises, its color resembles rouge, staining the sky and earth as if dyed with blood. This is called "heavenly killing," causing hardship for those in military command; there will be heavy rain across the plains within seven days. If the rain does not come, it signifies a fire disaster.
