Charting guides: Chinese Almanac, Chinese Perpetual Calendar

A fire suddenly appears on the weapons of soldiers. This omen indicates that all the troops will bravely fight with high morale, and the army will surely win in battle. However, if the flame is blue, it is not advisable to go to war. Old interpretations say that if the flame is blue and small, like ghost fire, it indicates concern for military affairs. Spots of blood suddenly appear on the general's clothes. One should be cautious of someone plotting to harm him and should quickly burn the clothes to drive away the calamity; otherwise, the general will suffer. Blood symbolizes weapons, and its sudden appearance on the body indicates that an assassin is coming. At the same time, one should investigate the attendants around him. Drawing out a sword, blood spots naturally appear on the blade. This indicates that there will be great military achievements soon. If there is also the sound of bells and drums in the camp ringing on their own, then when encountering the enemy in battle, victory is certain.

On the day of the military campaign, a dragon appeared, causing great alarm among the people. It should be quickly ordered to retreat and not persist in advancing; if one insists on proceeding, it will only result in the unnecessary loss of troops. The general's tent moved without cause, as if someone were shaking it. Since the tent represents the general's position, its movement without anyone shaking it indicates that the enemy's morale has already begun to waver. Therefore, this omen suggests that the enemy's forces will disintegrate; by merely advancing the troops slightly for battle, the enemy will collapse like ice melting or snow melting away, without the need for a major attack. Within the general's tent, the bed shook, causing alarm among the people; if blood then appears, it is considered an omen of abnormality. If battle still occurs at this time, the consequences will be severe, and the general is likely to die and be buried in the fields.

The general's sleeves suddenly fluttered and rose into the air. This is an omen of the general's downfall and loss, which cannot be averted. The soldiers will be overwhelmed by the enemy, and they should quickly form ranks and retreat. When the army has just been assembled and is moving through marshes, ponds, and open fields, if stones rise from the ground, this is a good omen, indicating they should advance. It also signifies the sovereign's wisdom and the ministers' virtue. After the camp is set up and the troops are fully deployed, if countless fragments of stone appear on the ground, this indicates the general will soon relinquish command. The omen from heaven and earth is clear and evident.

Within the military camp, the land suddenly rises and becomes higher. This certainly indicates that the enemy will come to present land and submit, winning the battle with just one banner, effortlessly; it is possible to rest the soldiers and put away the weapons. Originally, the military camp was a flat field, but now the ground is slightly higher than when it was first arrived. This indicates that the general's rank will certainly be promoted, and the official position can be enjoyed for many years. Within the military camp, the ground suddenly shows a yellow color. Yellow is the color of the center and represents the growth and prosperity of earth. This indicates the ability to capture the enemy's soldiers and generals, return victorious, and spread great glory, with the whole world celebrating and praising.

Within the military camp, there is a mist rising from the center of the ground, spreading throughout the entire encampment. Tell the soldiers not to be surprised, for this indicates the enemy is timid in battle and their actions become more erratic and confused. Our side can capture the enemy general and expand our territory. Within the military camp, water springs suddenly emerge from the ground. This is called "Rùn Jūn" (moistening the army), a sign of heavenly assistance and smooth progress. We should act first, rallying the troops and preparing the army, so that good news can be reported to the imperial capital. When the army is resting, dust suddenly rises from the ground; if accompanied by a sound of shaking, everyone feels strange. This indicates that within three to five days, the army will definitely return, and even if a big battle is fought, it will be in vain, causing only hardship and worry.

Within the military camp, there are numerous bloodstains on the ground. Blood appearing without cause in the camp indicates that killing energy has gathered here, which is a very ominous omen. People should quickly avoid the area; otherwise, the soldiers will have to wear hemp robes and caps to bury the dead, and there will be no opportunity to seek military glory. Within the camp, the ground suddenly sprouts wormwood with fresh green shoots, which everyone can recognize. This indicates that there will be an epidemic within the military, a serious matter. A deadly disease will cause great alarm. Old annotations say: an old saying states, "For a disease that has lasted seven years, one seeks dried wormwood that has been stored for three years." Wormwood is a medicinal herb, so the appearance of wormwood signifies the coming of disease. After the camp has been established, the roads and pathways within have been properly arranged. However, the ground suddenly cracks open. At this time, it is better to prepare for a quick relocation of the camp; if one does not believe this, great defeat and collapse will follow.

Within the military camp, the ground collapses into a pit. If the collapse is large, the loss is great; if small, the defeat is minor. In any case, it indicates a military defeat and loss of troops, so the camp should be moved quickly. Within the military camp, if the ground collapses and causes alarm, and the sound of the collapse resembles the war drums calling for battle, this is a凶 omen. One must quickly relocate the camp. Any delay will lead to disaster. Within the city camp, if the cooking pots and cauldrons suddenly make noises at midnight, this certainly indicates that a sudden army is coming to attack the camp. At the same time, internal rebellion and treachery should also be guarded against. One should arrange the troops in formation and calmly face the enemy from the rear.

Within the military camp, crickets and ants are everywhere. Ants are good at digging through the ground, so we must be on high alert to prevent secret plots and evil influences from arising. We should also be concerned about enemies digging tunnels to infiltrate the city. Vigilance is essential for safety. Within the military camp and city, a sudden sound is heard in the sky, like thunder but not thunder. This is likely the manifestation of the earth deity, indicating that warfare is about to begin soon. Various strange phenomena occur; they should not be spread around. We must be cautious to prevent spies from gathering detailed information. We should also be wary of capable individuals within the enemy's ranks who might uncover our true signs.

Within the city camp, there are constant alarms day and night. This is mostly because the original site of the camp was once a temple of spirits. The camp should be moved quickly and not stay; if they do not leave, the enemy will come to steal the camp. Within the city camp, the banners wave without being moved and the war drums sound without being struck. This indicates the heavenly mandate comes to assist us. In ten battles, nine will be victorious, and the commander can proceed with ease. Within the city camp, the sounds of war horns and drums are urgent and strong, yet no one is blowing or striking them. This relates to the great matter of the rise and fall of heaven and earth. The military will be greatly mobilized, with many troubles and calamities. The people will also lose their means of farming.

Within the city and camp, the war drums and horns sound without anyone blowing them. War drums and horns are instruments of command; if they sound without orders, it indicates that enemy forces are about to attack. One should quickly prepare weapons and troops to await the enemy, be alert for battle, and not treat it as a coincidence. Within the city and camp, the war drum is struck but does not sound loudly. At this time, the drum should be raised by one zhang or nine chi, and the chief inspector and his deputy should test the sound of the drum. Then, perform seven bows to remove the ill omens. Old annotations say: after each of the various groups performs seven bows, then strike the drum. Within the city and camp, the war drum cannot be sounded. This indicates that the commander will suffer defeat in battle and be captured by the enemy. One should promptly pack up and retreat, or else suffer losses. Old annotations say: if the camp is moved, the soldiers can be preserved.

At times during the day or night, the general's sword and dagger make a sound by themselves. Swords and daggers are of the same essence, so when they make a sound by themselves, it indicates that weapons are approaching, meaning assassins and wicked people are nearby in the courtyard. One must hurry to search and capture them without stopping; if one does not believe this, bloodshed will occur. Within the camp or city, if the well water boils and makes a sound, or if the spring water overflows, these are signs of defeat. If one also sees a dragon appear, the interpretation is the same. Upon seeing these signs, one should immediately move the camp. Within the city or camp, if a single drum (or horn) sounds by itself, this omen indicates that enemies are coming to attack. Following the sound of the drum, one must quickly organize the elite troops, send out distant scouts, and then advance to meet the enemy.

The city camp sounded a horn, the sound carried far but was weak, the tone was broken and the echo long, causing surprise. This omen indicates that our troops will face disaster and danger; only by holding firm can we avoid collapse. The golden drum and war drums split open by more than seven parts. This is a凶兆 indicating that all the soldiers will be captured or executed. We should urgently perform a ritual to appease and move the camp location, and must not recklessly carry out executions, lest we increase the killing energy. The spears, banners, and halberds fell down without cause and overlapped together. This phenomenon indicates disease and misfortune, people falling ill as if lying in the grass. The method to appease is to slaughter dogs at the four gates of the camp and sprinkle their blood on the sandy ground. The old commentary says: at the hour of Zi, use dog blood to sprinkle on the ground at the four gates.

The bells and gongs sound naturally without wind, and the sounds of drums and horns are strong and shaking the earth. This certainly can defeat the enemy, boost the morale of the soldiers, and allow the army to return smoothly with the troops. Either during the day or at night, while in the camp feasting, the wine cups suddenly make a sound by themselves, causing everyone to be surprised. This indicates that the enemy attacking the camp has already set out and their movements are hidden. One should quickly send generals to intercept and attack them on the way. In the cups, clear water suddenly turns red, like blood, causing everyone to be surprised. In reality, this is a good omen, indicating the ability to achieve extraordinary feats, and even in urgent battles, there will be no danger.

Within the military camp, the war horses suddenly neighed, pawed the ground, crowded together, twisted their bodies, and moved in disorder at an inappropriate time. Horses are capable of understanding human intentions and foreseeing military affairs. Unusual restlessness indicates a hidden change. This suggests that although the enemy appears to be submitting, they are actually trying to deceive us. We should worship the heavens and invite the heavens to witness, while being strictly cautious of those who have surrendered, and must not relax our vigilance. The weapons and armor in the camp emitted light at night. The broken weapons should be arranged in the shape of the moon and buried in a cellar. The location should be one hundred paces away from the camp, which is most suitable. If buried even further away, it would be better. There was no wind, yet the banners fluttered on their own, pointing toward the enemy's position and the enemy's camp. This is certainly a sign of our victory. As long as we carefully plan, after achieving victory, we will be able to return home soon.

At the moment of battle, the horses suddenly became startled, trembling and shrinking back, showing a clear tendency to retreat. They would not move when pulled, remaining entangled and hesitant. This is a sign that is unfavorable for advancing; returning at this time would prevent the entire army from becoming panicked. When divining strange and unusual occurrences, it is important to inform the wise ones. Indeed, while a person walks, they may encounter strange phenomena anywhere; how can a commander be unaware of such things?

Rituals for Repelling Evil Influences, the Twenty-fourth (The Capital Edition says "Divination on Repelling Evil Influences, the Nineteenth") · Thirteen Verses

The method of禳厌 is profound and subtle. Whenever encountering the various strange and unusual phenomena mentioned earlier, one must choose the proper day and time to perform the ritual, and the method of厌胜 must be thoroughly understood and clear in order to be truly effective. When marching in battle, if the day falls in the first lunar month of spring or around the time of spring equinox, since spring belongs to the Five Phases of wood and wood represents straightness and growth, one should deploy long spears in the front line to achieve victory. Next, place bows and crossbows in the central army. In this way, the news of a decisive victory will surely be heard. When marching in battle, from the beginning of summer to the summer solstice, the method is the same. Since summer belongs to the Five Phases of fire and fire represents sharpness and division, one should command the entire army to deploy spears and halberds in the front as vanguard. Thus, the soldiers will naturally become heroes.

On the day of military movement, if it falls between early autumn and the autumn equinox, it is the time when the metal energy is strong. The bow and arrow belong to metal, so using troops with bows and arrows to advance first will bring fame and victory spreading far and wide. On the day of military movement, it is exactly the harsh winter. After the winter solstice, the yang energy begins to return, gaining this one part of regenerative energy, so first order the troops with swords and spears to charge forward, and the military campaign will achieve complete success. To deploy an eastern formation, have seven people who belong to the 'Jue' tone of the five sounds follow. All wear blue clothes and form a blue unit, hiding in concealment. Use blue flags and blue horses as the vanguard. This is the wood formation, known as 'Azure Dragon'.

Deploying the array in the south, those belonging to the 'Zheng' tone are most vigorous. Seven people wear red clothes and ride red horses, with a red flag waving high in the sky. This is the fire array, known as the 'Vermilion Bird', serving as the vanguard of the entire army. Deploying the array in the west, use soldiers belonging to the 'Shang' tone dressed in white. Seven strong men ride white horses, holding white flags with a single horn leading the way, serving as the vanguard for the entire army to advance. This is the metal array. Deploying the array in the north, those belonging to the 'Yu' tone are most prominent. They ride black horses, wear black clothes, and form ranks like the Big Dipper. They carry black flags and are known as the 'Black Tortoise', advancing at the front of the formation. This will cause the enemy commander's momentum to be broken and overturned.

Deploy the central formation, using people belonging to the 'Gong' tone, who should wear yellow clothes, with seven people holding yellow flags and riding yellow horses. The general of the earth deity 'Gou Chen' can be relied upon for assistance, and the enemy will surely be defeated with many corpses scattered everywhere. Whenever arranging military formations, during the days of the three 'Jia' heads, namely Jiazi, Jiachen, and Jiashen, the vanguard should be arranged according to the direction of the 'Star of Movement'. Orders must be accurate and the troops must be disciplined and diligent. Whenever arranging military formations, during the days of the 'Jia' heads, namely Jiawu, Jiayin, and Jiaxu, the troops with swords and spears should be placed in the front. This arrangement will effectively stop the attacking forces. To display military strength and seek auspiciousness, the army should be stationed in the direction of 'Jiu Tian'. In this way, all evil forces cannot take shape, but instead bring good fortune; it is even more favorable for the commander to receive favor and glory, how could there be any misfortune? The 'Taiyi Style' says: 'On Jiu Tian, troops can be arranged and formations set up; beneath Jiu Di, troops can hide and remain concealed.'

Divination of Dreams, Twenty-Fifth (In the Beijing edition, listed as Thirteenth) · Nine Verses

All divination through dreams originates from subtle and indistinct sources, and one should not hastily judge the meaning of a single dream. Only when a dream corresponds to three things can its fortune or misfortune be determined and reported to the sovereign. This is because the person's spirit and vital energy have already sensed the coming fortune or misfortune. A general dreams of a dragon flying beyond the clouds. If he immediately goes to battle, he will surely achieve a swift victory. Within three days (or a hundred days) he will be rewarded by the emperor with a high position and great achievements. A general dreams of a fish transforming into a dragon. The transformation of a fish into a dragon signifies rising and advancing, leading to victory in every battle. When facing enemies, he will surely capture them without encountering misfortune. His rank as a general will also be promoted.

A general who dreams of beating a drum: if the drum is large and the sound is loud, it indicates a great victory; if the drum is small and the sound is weak, it indicates a small victory; if the drum is struck but does not make a sound, one should hold firm and not rashly launch an attack. The outcome of victory or defeat depends entirely on the size of the sound of the drum in the dream. A general who dreams of a big fish indicates a great victory; dreaming of a small fish indicates a small victory; if one dreams of lightning and thunder, it indicates alarm within the army. Such dreams are most accurate. A general who dreams of great waves and turbulent water: water signifies danger and entrapment, and turbulent waves indicate mutual conflict, which suggests a struggle with the enemy, with the enemy coming to challenge. However, one should not engage in battle lightly, but instead hold firm at key positions such as the gate and bridges, waiting until their strength wanes before taking action.

General dreamed of thunder in the sky. The omen indicates defeating the enemy and capturing the king, so there is no need to be concerned whether it was a bright moon or dark sky, whether it was阴 or晴, just lead the brave soldiers forward to fight. General dreamed of himself struggling to climb a high mountain. This indicates certain victory in battle and remarkable achievements, when encountering the enemy, attack urgently and destroy them without relaxing for a moment. General dreamed of a big ship, and it was going with the current and favorable wind, with all sails and awnings in order. This indicates certain victory in battle, achieving the first merit, and being happy as a god.

The Zhou Changes (I Ching) Divination on Waiting for the Right Time, Twenty-sixth Chapter · Thirty-seven Verses

The sages created the Zhou Changes, composing the statements about changing lines. When casting a hexagram to inquire about fortune or misfortune, one must first clean one's hands and then proceed with the divination ritual according to propriety. Only with sincere intention can one align with the Star of Wisdom and Adaptability. When using the Zhou Changes for divination, one should assemble the hexagram lines according to whether the situation is active or passive. First, distinguish between yin and yang to differentiate between self and other. Then clearly identify who is the main party and who is the guest, and if the judgment is accurate, the outcome of victory or defeat will naturally become clear. Regarding the distinction between main and guest: the party that initiates the action is considered the main party. The party that establishes a camp and remains stationary is called the 'main,' while the party that moves first is called the 'guest.' This principle is very clear.

When I enter the territory of an enemy, I am considered the guest; if the enemy attacks my camp, then I am the host and they are the guest. This principle corresponds with the method of astronomical divination. Whenever using the Book of Changes for divination, first consider the direction where the Six Relations are located, carefully examining whether the Five Phases are in harmony or in mutual control. If the Response Line harms the World Line, it indicates that our side is in turmoil and displacement. Among these, particular attention should be given to the strength of the Official Ghost and the Son and Grandson lines. To distinguish between ourselves and the enemy, first examine the Son and Grandson lines and the Official Ghost line: if the Son and Grandson line is prosperous and strong, our army will achieve victory; if the Official Ghost line is in a state of captivity or death, the enemy will suffer misfortune. The reverse situation should also be judged according to the same principle.

The "World" line represents me, and the "Response" line represents the other party. If the World line overcomes the Response line, I will win; if the Response line overcomes the World line, I will lose my home. If the World and Response lines are harmonious, both sides will remain in their respective places and there will be no conflict. The Inner Trigram represents my side, and the Outer Trigram represents the other side's country. If the Inner Trigram overcomes the Outer Trigram, there will be no major loss on my side; if the line of descendants is activated, I should quickly take action and prepare, and in the battle, my army will surely be strong. If the "Official Ghost" line is activated, it arises within the Inner Trigram; if it is activated near the line of descendants, the enemy may attack, but I will not succeed. If they have already been defeated, how can they return smoothly? Old annotations say: when predicting warfare, the World line represents me, the Response line represents the other party, the Inner Trigram represents me, the Outer Trigram represents the other party, the line of descendants represents me, and the Official Ghost line represents the other party; if the World and Response lines are harmonious, it is auspicious.

The sons' line is activated and is prosperous and strong with vitality, clearly evident. At this time, if I attack the enemy, I will achieve complete success; if the enemy attacks me, I will be defeated without any way to escape, and my generals will certainly achieve great merits. To divinate about the enemy's forces, examine the two upper lines of the official ghost. If the official ghost lacks vitality and is activated on the fifth or sixth lines, then although it has moved, it does not meet with me, and the enemy's forces will naturally retreat to their stronghold. To divinate about the enemy's forces, if the official ghost is activated within the third line of the inner trigram, or if the official line receives support and is prosperous and strong with vitality, then the enemy will arrive very quickly, within a moment, and we must urgently assemble the three armies for vigilance.

Divining whether the enemy will mobilize troops, if the line of子孙 (offspring) is strong and prosperous, while none of the six lines show官鬼 (official ghost), then all the rumors outside are empty talk and no reliable information can be obtained. Divining enemy news, if the response line is activated, it represents the enemy. The enemy will indeed come, attack us, and our general can capture them; the invading general will die in the desert. Divining enemy news, if the brothers line is activated, what does it mean? If the enemy is attacking me on the third and fourth lines, the enemy will arrive quickly, without delay; however, after they arrive, there will be no trouble.

Divination about enemy forces, the parents' line represents official documents and messages. If the position is occupied by the auspicious deity 'Heavenly Joy,' it indicates the court granting honors and the situation being peaceful and harmonious; however, one should also be cautious about the enemy's cunning strategies and numerous traps. Divination about enemy forces, if the wife and wealth line is activated in the hexagram and meets with 'Heavenly Joy' at the same time, then even if battle occurs, the enemy's military strength will be disordered and unfavorable, and our generals will achieve a favorable outcome. Whenever using the Book of Changes for divination, one must distinguish between odd and even, strong and weak. A yang line is called 'nine,' and a yin line is called 'six.' A greater number of yang lines indicates a larger army and our side being well-prepared; a small number of yin lines indicates worry within the enemy's army.

Entering an enemy's territory, we should use the official line to make a judgment. If the official ghost is strong and the son line is weak and confined, our side will win; if the situation is the opposite, the achievements will be few. Divination experts should carefully analyze these details. When entering a foreign country, the most important thing is to observe the wealth line. If the son line is active and the wealth line is strong and appears together, then victories will be achieved everywhere, with abundant food, clothing, grain, and supplies, soldiers will be highly rewarded and happily return home. If neither the official ghost nor the son line appears in the hex lines, only the response line and the world line are visible. Then take the response line as the enemy and the world line as our army, and determine the military situation based on the mutual control relationship between these two lines.

If the World Line is prosperous and strong and overcomes the Response Line's palace, one should quickly send troops forward, for this action is auspicious. Naturally, one knows that heaven is aiding, and there will be many good things, and the commander will achieve remarkable success. If the Brother Line acts alone, it indicates that there are hidden enemies. One should temporarily not send troops on a long journey; rushing forward will surely bring unexpected troubles. If one does not believe this, they will suffer misfortune. If the Wealth Line is activated, it represents the army's supplies. If the army gathers supplies locally, the army will be strong; if the divination lacks the Wealth Line, even if other lines are prosperous, there may still be a famine. This point requires careful consideration.

If the World Line falls into a Storage position, our army should hold its position and remain still; if the Response Line is attacked and is in a weak and confined position, the invading army will certainly suffer defeat and lose troops, and our troops will be joyful. If the Official Ghost approaches with fire and attacks us, we should worry about enemy ambushes; if the Official Ghost is in the water position, we should not set up our camp there; if the Official Ghost belongs to earth, it indicates warfare in all directions, and we must not rashly move our troops. If the Official Ghost belongs to wood and is strong, there will certainly be a powerful army; gold and fire should not be present on the World Line and Response Line, for both sides will certainly fight fiercely; if the Official Ghost belongs to fire, it indicates that the enemy will attack our camp.

The Heavenly Stems are: Jia, Yi, Bing, Ding, Wu, Ji, Geng, Xin, Ren, Gui. The Earthly Branches are: Zi, Chou, Yin, Mao, Chen, Si, Wu, Wei, Shen, You, Xu, Hai. The Trigrams are: Qian (Heaven), Dui (Lake), Li (Fire), Zhen (Thunder), Xun (Wind), Kan (Water), Gen (Mountain), Kun (Earth). The World and Response Lines are important in divination. The Line Statement refers to the specific statements associated with each line in the hexagram. The Upper Trigram is the outer trigram, the Inner Trigram is the inner trigram. When yin and yang are in harmony, they are called like and harmonious. Yin and yang represent the dual forces. Kongwang refers to an empty or void position in the hexagram. If the brothers' lines come to attack me, I should be cautious of the military supplies being seized. If the water line is active, it indicates matters related to boats and vehicles. If the fire line is active, it suggests a fire in the camp. For official documents and messages, one should look at the parents' lines. All these should be considered in conjunction with the signs shown by heaven. At this time, it is necessary to enforce strict orders and remind the soldiers to guard the supply lines carefully. The position of the Line Statements is indicated by the numbers 'nine' and 'six' to denote yin and yang. A yang line is called 'nine', and a yin line is called 'six'. Yin and yang each occupy half, naturally guarding each other. When the World and Response Lines are in harmony, neither side suffers damage, and each controls their own weapons, without conflict. If the Outer Trigram is still, but the Inner Trigram is active and the brothers' lines appear, it is not a serious matter if Kongwang is present in the hexagram. Furthermore, if the hexagram's energy is unstable, the matter is even more uncertain. At this time, it is best to hold firm and wait for the right moment, allowing both sides to coexist peacefully.

The divination shows the "Returning Soul" hexagram, with the third and fourth lines moving, indicating an ominous situation. If the official ghost line can be restrained, the ominous situation will turn into smooth sailing; if it also meets the "Star of Celebration," it is an auspicious time to withdraw troops, and the army will soon return. In the divination of the Book of Changes, the positions are based on the "Six Relations" and the Five Phases. If the outer trigram, the world line, and the sons line are all prosperous and strong, these three elements have vitality, and our side will not suffer damage; however, one must not fall into the "Kongwang" position. In any divination, if the inner trigram moves while the outer trigram remains still, it indicates peace and safety. If there is no official ghost line among the moving lines, it is just a false alarm; if the inner trigram has a harmful line moving, the harmful influence will grow stronger. The diviner must carefully examine the nuances between them.

The outer trigram is activated, and the inner trigram also has a moving line. If our side launches an attack, we must use both weapons, and in the great battle, the sound of battle will shake the heavens. The official ghost line is prosperous and strong, and the third and fourth lines are activated and changing. This certainly indicates that the enemy will attack our formation, so we must hurry to return, and must not engage in battle; once we move, our army will suffer great defeat. Using the four virtues to interpret, this divination indicates that our army is strong. In spring, if the trigrams of thunder and wind or the branches of寅 and卯 are obtained, it is favorable. In summer, if fire and the branches of巳 and午 are obtained, it is favorable as it is in the territory of the trigram of fire. This principle must be understood thoroughly. In autumn, if the trigram of heaven is obtained, it is favorable to have the branches of申 and酉 nearby. In winter, if the branches of亥 and子 are obtained, it is favorable as it is in the territory of the trigram of water. When the earth is strong, the trigrams of mountain and earth are used, and the branches of丑,未, 辰, and 戌 are conflicting with each other.

The Twenty-seventh Style of Taiyi (In this school, the characters "Taiyi" are written as "Tianyi" in the Xin edition and the Sichuan edition) · Thirty-one Verses

The method of the Taiyi chart requires following the Yang Dun in a clockwise direction and the Yin Dun in a counterclockwise direction to distinguish yin and yang. Every five days, sixty hours form a single unit, with the Eight Doors and Nine Stars each taking turns according to the hours, thus determining the favorable doors and directions for auspicious outcomes. Everyone who studies numerology must know the Taiyi遁 chart. It is used for building houses, handling funerals, traveling, taking office, and launching military campaigns; those who know how to use it will gain advantages in all matters, while those who do not, even with good strategies, often miss the right timing. On the day of military deployment, one must first determine from which direction the army will depart. The three paths corresponding to the doors "Kai," "Xiu," and "Sheng" are favorable. If there is also a "Qi" star present, it is even better, ensuring the general's safety and well-being.

The three heavenly stems 乙, 丙, and 丁 are collectively called the Three Marvels. 乙 is the Day Marvel, 丙 is the Month Marvel, and 丁 is the Star Marvel. If they appear on three auspicious gates, divine assistance and alignment with the Star of wisdom and adaptability will naturally occur, allowing for confident action without worry or doubt. Each of the nine stars has its own position, occupying the directions of the eight palaces. The Central Palace does not have a fixed position and instead resides in the second palace, which is the Earth Palace. When practitioners calculate and arrange the chart, they must carefully examine these positions and act accordingly, ensuring our forces will be strong. When 甲 is placed over 丙, it is called Wu, which is the highest level of Dun Jia. When 丙 is placed over 甲, it is called Flying Bird Falling into a Cave. If these two formations appear in the hour, matters will naturally be complete, and military campaigns will result in victory and triumphant return.

In the Taiyi concealment method, the lunar oddity Jia Bing combines with the Life Gate, and below there is the six Dings added upon it. At this hour, it is suitable for managing affairs and achieving high official positions, and is appropriate for presenting wise strategies and submitting memorials. The Open Door combines with the solar oddity Yi, falling in the direction of the six Yi. This is called "earth concealment," suitable for setting up camps and establishing ambushes, which can avoid worries and calamities, and the daily essence energy received will bring long-term benefits. The star oddity Ding combines with the Xiu Men, indicating a sign of benefiting others. At this time, it is suitable for recommending virtuous people and seeking capable generals, as well as resolving enmities and persuading enemies, using wise words to move the other party. This method aligns with the intention of the ancients.

The Moon's Wondrous Influence (Yue Qi) Bing combines with the Life Gate (Sheng Men), and also occupies the position of the Upper Heaven (Jiu Tian). At this time, it is appropriate to worship deities, perform sacred techniques, and lay out the divination rods for rituals. The concept of Divine Concealment (Shen Dun) is not a mere legend. Old annotations state: when the Life Gate combines with the Moon's Wondrous Influence and is located under the Upper Heaven, it is called Divine Concealment. It is suitable for laying out divination rods, performing sacred techniques, and worshiping deities. The Sun's Wondrous Influence (Ri Qi) Yi combines with the Lower Earth (Jiu Di) and the Open Door (Kai Men). At this time, it is appropriate to investigate and examine the enemy's secrets, create a false appearance, and set up distant deceptions, which is favorable for a secret attack on the enemy's camp. This is called Ghost Concealment (Gui Dun), and it allows troops to be hidden like divine soldiers, undetected. The Sun's Wondrous Influence (Ri Qi) Yi combines with the Life Gate (Sheng Men), and is also located on the Lower Earth (Jiu Di). This is called Dragon Concealment (Long Dun). It is appropriate for worshiping dragons, for naval warfare, for requesting rain, and for presenting petitions to heaven. Using it for ambushes can clearly demonstrate one's ability.

Under the 'Life Gate,' the hexagram of the six辛 (Xin) is positioned at the Gen (Mountain) position, and this direction is called 'Yi Wonder.' It is suitable for pacifying rebels, attacking enemies, and opening passes, ensuring the safety of generals and commanders. Regarding 'Cloud Wonder,' it occurs when the dragon's position meets the Qimen (Mysterious Gate). At this time, one can scatter iron gravel, drink alcohol, and spray it to perform rituals, commanding the entire army to look up, and surely achieve peace and stability. The effects of Cloud Wonder will manifest one by one. Regarding 'Wind Wonder,' at this time the White Tiger deity is called Zhangkang (狂). During the ritual, the stars in the sky are aligned with the six乙 (Yi) below, then wind is summoned and the wind's power is made to follow our will, to pray for the country. This principle aligns with the will of the苍天 (Heaven).

Above the "Nine Heavens," it is most favorable for our army to deploy troops and form arrays; below the "Nine Earths," it is suitable for concealment and handling secret affairs; to escape and hide, one should take the position of "Liu He" to avoid the malevolent stars. If concealment is done properly, one's mind will naturally be joyful. The so-called "Five Unfavorable Times" refer to the noon hour on a Jia day, the morning hour on a Bing day, the afternoon hour on a Yi day, the morning hour on a Ding day, and the dawn hour on a Wu day. These five hours are to be avoided for military movements. The so-called "Five Unfavorable Positions" are first the position of the "Nine Heavens," then the positions of the "Nine Earths," "Zhi Fu," and "Zhi Shi," plus the "Life Gate." If troops attack these five positions, they will suffer injuries. This principle is contained within the art of Dun Jia.

When encountering "Six Instruments Clash with Crime," which means the Six Instruments fall into a palace that is in conflict with the native branch, any endeavor will find it difficult to succeed. In such an hour, one will encounter a loss of position, and even if there is a favorable configuration of the Three Marvels, it will be hard to resolve the issue. It is especially dangerous to engage in military operations at this time. When the Direct Symbol and the Direct Command fall on the Zi (Water Ox) position, they are both unfavorable in the third palace; the戌 (Earth Dog) position fears the Kun (Earth) palace, the申 (Metal Monkey) position fears the Gen (Mountain) palace, the午 (Fire Horse) position in the Li (Fire) palace and the酉 (Metal Rooster) position in the Xun (Wind) palace are definitely ominous. The寅 (Wood Tiger) position and the Jiachen (Jia Chen) position follow the same rules. When the Three Marvels enter their burial place, this lesson indicates many people will be lost. Good affairs will suffer a reduction in strength during their progress. Even if a favorable configuration of the Three Marvels is encountered, it will still be difficult to pass through. At this time, it is best to remain stationary and avoid wasting time and causing mistakes.

The Yi Qi is buried in the Wei position, looking toward the Kun direction; the Bing Qi is buried in the Xu position and the You position; the Ding Qi is also located in the Xu and the Qian positions. These places should be clearly identified to avoid misjudgment. The Three Marvels move among the Six Instruments: Zi is paired with Geng, Chou with Xin, Yin with the original stem, Mao with Ren, following this pattern in sequence, covering all eight directions and the four intermediates. When the six Gui meet with Ding, it is the time of "Heaven's Net Spread Out." At this time, any action or plan cannot be decided; however, the spread of the net has high and low levels. Starting from the first palace of the Kan position, it proceeds in order. In areas where the net is low, one can still escape.

If one encounters an urgent danger or a pressing situation that requires fleeing, one should hold the blade against the left and right shoulders and walk straight for sixty steps, and there will be no obstruction. This method should be known by the superior. "Opening Door" presides over the situation, with the six Wu stars and the odd door in harmony. This indicates that there will be a wealthy guest assisting on the way ahead, and a woman will have prepared wine and meat to welcome; at this time, visiting someone will bring joy and harmony. Outside of "Resting Door," it signifies gaining wealth through joy. Going out for thirty days and traveling fifty miles will encounter matters involving snakes, mice, women, and children, but while traveling away from home, one can avoid calamity.

At the Life Gate, the Three Marvels combine with this gate. At this time, one will meet a public official dressed in purple and black clothing. When this pattern occurs, the movement of military forces corresponds to the number six in the third position, and it is especially effective for matters concerning the military gate. Within the Shang Gate, it is suitable for hunting and capturing thieves, and one should advance in that direction. The Du Gate is unfavorable, and it is auspicious to hide forward. The Jing Gate is not suitable for settling matters; only offering strategies and submitting documents can be somewhat effective. At the Death Gate, attacking and fighting is not advisable. However, hunting is suitable in this direction. If used for warfare, it can diminish the enemy's strength. Therefore, to determine the effectiveness of victory, one needs to encounter this. The path associated with the Jing Gate is suitable for capturing thieves and apprehending fugitives. Traveling about twenty miles will encounter blocked roads and noisy magpies. If involved in legal disputes, one will be pleased to receive a fair judgment.
