The opening lines of the "Sun Bin Total Divination Song" state: An easy hexagram does not come about without reason, and the divine lines are not randomly activated. The original commentary explains: A hexagram has six lines, each line corresponding to one of the six relations. When divining about something, one uses the appropriate relation, each with its own function. The world line represents the person seeking divination, the response line represents the other party, and the useful god is the main line of the matter being divined. The term "shen gui" refers to the changes of yin and yang energy; each line is governed by a divine force. When divining, the hexagram forms according to the question asked, and the lines are activated according to the question. The song also says: Once the form of the hexagram's body is established, if the useful god is missing, the person will appear worried. The original commentary explains: Once the hexagram is cast, the hexagram image immediately appears; if the useful god does not appear in the hexagram, it is indeed something to be worried about.
The song says: Begin by considering "Heavenly Joy," then look at the direction of the "Nobleman." If there is "Triple Harmony," then all matters will be auspicious. "Wealth" and "Post Horse" are especially favorable. The original commentary explains that Heavenly Joy, Nobleman, Triple Harmony, Wealth, and Post Horse are all auspicious deities. When these appear in the hexagram, they indicate favorable outcomes. If a line encounters Heavenly Joy, it signifies joy and happiness, and all matters will proceed smoothly. If a line encounters Nobleman, it can resolve dangers and bring salvation, turning misfortune into good fortune. Triple Harmony refers to combinations such as Shen-Zi-Chen forming a water trinity, where the elements harmonize and become friendly. There is also Six Harmony, such as Yin and Hai combining, or Mao and Xu combining. Among the Six Harmonies, "generative harmony" is most auspicious, as it involves mutual support and generation. For example, Yin and Hai combine to form wood, with Hai water generating Yin wood. "Restrictive harmony" involves harmony with some degree of restriction, such as Mao and Xu combining to form fire, where Mao wood originally restrains Xu earth. If one seeks officialdom and encounters Wealth and Post Horse, promotion is likely.
The song says: Only when the line moves can we determine the outcome. The original commentary explains: We must look at the moving line in the hexagram to determine fortune or misfortune. The song also says: Next, we should quickly consider the "empty" (kongwang). The original commentary explains: We must also take into account the "empty" when judging fortune or misfortune—good spirits are bad when they fall into the empty, while evil spirits are good when they fall into the empty. The song also says: Pengcheng has a secret method, which must not be forgotten. The original commentary records it as follows: If a man's line falls into the empty, he worries about long journeys; if a woman's line falls into the empty, she worries about illness. A sudden illness meeting the empty is suitable for praying and doing good deeds; a long illness meeting the empty means the person's life is unreliable. If the wealth line falls into the empty, money is hard to hold onto; if the official ghost line falls into the empty, lawsuits will naturally stop. If someone is sued and meets the empty, it will only be a futile纠缠; if it is said that thieves come, they will not actually arrive, only making empty noise. If the wife's line falls into the empty, the wife is in danger; if an unmarried girl's line falls into the empty, there is something else going on outside. If the house line falls into the empty, we must urgently do good deeds and pray for relief; if the parents' line falls into the empty, worry about illness. If the siblings' line falls into the empty, we cannot get help from friends or family; if the children's line falls into the empty, it indicates loneliness.
The song says: "Four Conflicts" indicate dispersion and overcoming. The original annotation cites Yuan Tiangang's view: Chen, Xu, Chou, and Wei are the four conflicts. Even if a favorable hexagram is obtained, it will turn into misfortune; even if they are mutually generating or both "Siblings" and harmonious, they will still be broken and the matter will have no beginning or end. If a line is confronted by a conflict or a conjunction, there may be both good and bad outcomes, and one must carefully discern. The song also says: when conflicts reach their extreme, they all lead to injury. The original annotation cites the "Chen Ao Ge Zhang" saying: Yin, Shen, Si, and Hai are the four conflicts. Any ten things attempted will not succeed, marriages and lawsuits are not auspicious, even if the mutual generation aspect is present, it is still unreliable. The song also says: when the World and Response lines both move, there will certainly be changes. The original annotation explains: when both the World and Response lines move, it certainly indicates signs of unrest and instability.

The song says: "When the 'Parents' hexagram is prosperous and strong, one may attain the rank of a marquis or duke." The original note explains: When divining about official career, the 'Parents' hexagram also represents the seal, and if the seal is strong, it indicates great fortune. The song says: "If 'Heavenly Joy' holds the world position, official matters will certainly be unimpeded." The original note explains: When 'Heavenly Joy' holds the world position, litigation will certainly be justified. The song says: "When 'Gou Chen' overcomes 'Black Tortoise,' capturing thieves need not be anxious." The original note explains: 'Gou Chen' belongs to earth, and 'Black Tortoise' belongs to water; earth can overcome water. When the 'Children' hexagram is on 'Gou Chen' and moves, it overcomes the 'Official Ghost' hexagram on 'Black Tortoise,' making it easy to capture thieves. The song says: When divining about a father's illness, one should be wary of 'Great Killing.' The original note explains: 'Great Killing' is also called 'Heavenly Lamentation,' a凶神, and if the hexagram of 'Great Killing' is on the upper hexagram, it certainly indicates death. The song says: Encountering an empty position indicates the mother will not live long. The original note explains: When divining about illness, if a long-suffering person encounters an empty position, it indicates there will be mourning. The song says: If the hexagram lacks 'Official Ghost,' the illness is difficult to treat. The original note explains: When divining about illness and the hexagram does not contain the 'Official Ghost' hexagram, it indicates the cause of the illness is difficult to determine, treatment is ineffective, and recovery is unlikely. The song says: When 'Official Ghost' is prosperous and strong, it indicates madness. The original note explains: When divining about illness, if 'Official Ghost' is strong and 'Wealth' is also strong, life is in danger. The song says: Consult the ghost calendar, pray and make offerings to attain health and safety.
The song says: When divining marriage, be wary if the "wife and wealth"爻 is in a dead position; when divining childbirth, look at the yin and yang of the爻. The original note explains: For a man divining marriage, the "wife and wealth"爻 is the key; if the wealth爻 is strong and flourishing, it is auspicious, but if it is in a dead or墓 position, it is unfavorable for marriage; when divining childbirth, look at the "children"爻, a yang爻 indicates a male child, and a yin爻 indicates a female child. The song says: If you want to ask about fengshui, a third or fourth generation卦 is auspicious. The original note explains: When divining fengshui, if the卦 is third or fourth generation, it is a great auspicious sign. The song says: The principle of long life and bathing must be carefully examined in every卦. The original note explains: Long life and bathing refer to the twelve states of the long life system, meaning when examining a卦, one must carefully consider this mnemonic. The song says: There are too many words to say, only the main points are briefly mentioned. The original note explains: This song cannot cover all matters in the world, only the main points are briefly mentioned. The song says: All kinds of matters have their own classifications, and all things are included. The original note explains: The above is a general method of interpreting the卦, but specific applications involve classified divination; the Yi hexagram is originally all-encompassing. Ji'an Dao Ren says: When divining, one must first clearly identify which of the six relations is the useful god. Then, according to whether it appears or is hidden, one should deduce. If the useful god is attacked, it is inauspicious; if there is something that generates and supports it, it is inauspicious but with a good aspect. If the useful god is originally auspicious but is attacked and oppressed, it becomes inauspicious within auspiciousness. If it is attacked and oppressed, one should set up methods to control the爻 that attacks it; if it is supported, one should set up methods to support the爻 that supports it. If someone can understand the meaning, even though the principles of the卦 are profound, they can be fully understood.
Divination on Heavenly Phenomena Second
The "Ghost Valley Method of Distinguishing Lines" in the section on weather assigns the degree of rain or clear weather according to the position of the lines. For the line indicating rain, from the first line to the top line, it is sequentially: clouds gathering and moving, light rain, continuous rain, several days of overcast rain, torrential rain, and rain that does not last long. For the line indicating clear weather, it is sequentially: wind, dew, mist, dew, sun, and clear sky. Another column, from the first line to the sixth line, for rain is: clouds, dragon, lightning, thunder, rain god, and heavenly rain; for clear weather: fog, birth, dispersion, gathering, abundance, and clear weather. (The original table had some misalignment, but it is listed as it is.) Sun Bin's "Song of Exploring the Profound" says: if the Black Tortoise is in the water positions of壬 or癸, there will be continuous rain without stopping; if the坎 (Water) represents the rain god and the巽 (Wind) represents the dragon, and both are activated, then the rain will be misty. If the world line is of wood and the hexagram body is of earth, it indicates clear and sunny weather; if 甲 (Jia) is associated with乾 (Heaven) and 乙 (Yi) is associated with坤 (Earth), heaven and earth correspond, and gentle winds naturally arise. If 丙 (Bing) fire and 壬 (Ren) water are mutually controlling, it indicates lightning like golden snakes moving; if the world line is of 庚 (Geng) and the response line is of 乙 (Yi), then thunder chariots will roar. If the world line comes from fire, the sun will shine brightly; a pure yang hexagram will certainly indicate severe drought. If the mountain hexagram changes into the earth hexagram, the sky will become gloomy; if the response line can control the day branch, the clouds will quickly disperse.
The "Tantian Ge" continues to say: When the Li trigram enters the wooden palace of Zhen and Xun, clouds rise and the sky is splendid; "Official Ghost" is near "Black Tortoise," and rain has already fallen everywhere. A yang trigram transforming into a yin trigram means rain will come again; a yin trigram entering a yang palace brings bright stars and clear skies. The water lines of Hai and Zi have "Black Tortoise," so the rain from heaven will reach all four seas. The Li trigram is the origin of clear weather; the Kun trigram belongs to yin, and only indicates light yin and slight moisture. When Kan is above and Xun is below, rain comes first and then wind arises; thunder enters Kan, and thunderclaps shake the heavens. If Zhen returns to Gen, thunder has already ceased; when Kan and Li trigrams change into each other, clear and rainy weather alternate. When Li and Zhen trigrams change and interact, lightning flashes; if the outer trigram lacks Kan or Dui, clouds and dragons remain hidden. When a yin trigram changes into the Kan palace, rain will surely fall; when Kun earth and Dui metal support each other, mist arises and the sky becomes cold. In addition, one should also refer to the "Gui Guo Discrimination of Lines" method of six lines. When there is a moving line, one should carefully examine the line position. Generally, water lines always indicate rain, while clear weather definitely arises from fire lines. If one can thoroughly memorize this poem, predicting heavenly changes will not be difficult.
The original commentary explains sentence by sentence: what is meant by "the Black Tortoise resides in the water of Jia and Yi" is that when divining on a Jia or Yi day, the Black Tortoise is located on which line—when the hexagram is Song (Hexagram 6), the Black Tortoise is exactly on the line of children Renxu earth; when the hexagram is Shi (Hexagram 7), the Black Tortoise is exactly on the line of parents Guiyou metal. This is called the Black Tortoise residing in the position of Jia and Yi. What is meant by "Kan is the rain master, Xun is the dragon" is that since Kan is the water trigram, it is called the rain master; Xun is located in the southeast, exactly in the direction of Chen and Si, and Chen in the twelve zodiac animals is the dragon, so it is called the dragon. What is meant by "wood world and earth body" is that according to Li Chunfeng's method of determining the hexagram body: if the world line is held by Hai or Zi, the hexagram body is on the first line; if held by Chou or Xu, it is on the second line; if held by Yin or Shen, it is on the third line; if held by Mao or You, it is on the fourth line; if held by Chen or Wei, it is on the fifth line; if held by Si or Wu, it is on the sixth line, without error. If the world line is wood and the body line is earth, the weather is definitely clear. What is meant by "Jing and Ren counteract each other, restraining the golden snake" is that Jing is fire and Ren is water, water can overcome fire, so they counteract each other; if the Ren line is the world line and the Jing line is the responding line, lightning is definitely seen.
The Tianxuan Assignment says: Although the advantages of the land are extensive, they must rely on the heavenly timing to flourish; if one asks about the weather, whether it is sunny or rainy, it depends entirely on the water and fire lines in the hexagram. The original note explains: When predicting rain or sunshine, the water and fire lines are the main elements of the hexagram. If among the six lines there is no water line, rain will certainly not come; if there is no fire line, the sky will not be clear. If the water line moves and overcomes the world line, sudden rain will arrive; if the water line moves and generates the world line, it will be light rain. It also says: If the water line is strong and moves, it indicates sudden rain; if the water line moves without strength, it indicates light rain. If the water line moves and the earth line also moves, although there may be rain, it will not be much. If the hexagram has a water line, but the earth line moves and overcomes it, rain will certainly not come, only some indication of rain. If the water line transforms into water, in winter it can be interpreted as snow or ice. If the fire line moves and overcomes the world line, there will certainly be severe drought. If both water and fire lines move together, it indicates a favorable climate with rain and sunshine. If water transforms into fire, after sudden rain the weather will turn clear; if fire transforms into water, clear weather will turn into rain. If there is neither water nor fire in the six lines, or if both water and fire are empty, then neither rain nor sunshine will occur, and it will be overcast. Therefore, it is said: When asking about the weather, it depends entirely on water and fire.
The text says: Predict the weather in the sky by observing the movement and interactions of the lines, and decide the weather on earth by looking at the prosperity and weakness of the lines. The original commentary cites the view of Cangping: the World Line represents the earth, and the Response Line represents the sky; if the Response Line overcomes the World Line, there will be no rain, but if the World Line overcomes the Response Line, there will be heavy rain. If the line is active, the rain comes quickly; if it is still, the rain comes slowly. When predicting rain, the lines are divided according to their positions: if the first line is prosperous and strong, there will be dense clouds; if it is weak, there will be only thin mist. If the second line is prosperous and strong, there will be flashing lightning; if it is weak, there will be brief flashes in the clouds. If the third line is prosperous and strong, there will be strong winds tearing off roofs; if it is weak, there will be only gentle breezes. If the fourth line is prosperous and strong, there will be thunderous storms; if it is weak, there will be faint thunder. If the fifth line is prosperous and strong, there will be torrential rain; if it is weak, there will be light rain. If the sixth line is prosperous and strong, there will certainly be much rain. When predicting clear weather, the lines are also divided according to their positions: if the first line is prosperous and strong, the sky may be clear but the clouds are still thick; if it is weak, there will be thin clouds about to dissipate. If the second line is prosperous and strong, there will be dew covering the grass; if it is weak, there will be only slight dew. If the third line is prosperous and strong, there will be scattered morning glories; if it is weak, there will be霞光 only at sunset. If the fourth line is prosperous and strong, there will be a rainbow cutting through the rain; if it is weak, there will be floating clouds clearing only half the sky. If the fifth line is prosperous and strong, the sun will shine brightly; if it is weak, the sunlight will be dim. If the fifth line is yin and strong, the moon will shine like a frozen wheel; if it is weak, it will seem as if looking at the moon through thin silk. If the sixth line is prosperous and strong, the sky will be clear as if immersed in an ice vessel.
The text says: The third line conflicts with the sixth line, and we see lightning flashing through the sky; the fourth line overcomes the fifth line, and we witness a rainbow spanning the sun. The original commentary explains: If the third line moves and overcomes the first line, it is like a wind sweeping away the remnants, dispersing the clouds in the sky; if the third line moves and generates the first line, it is like the wind carrying thick clouds, covering the entire world. The second line and the fourth line mutually generate, causing lightning and thunder, startling people; the third line and the sixth line conflict, resulting in a sudden downpour, as if stirring up six dragons. If the hexagram indicates clear weather, then it must be that the first line moves to generate the second line, or the second line moves to overcome the first line, which will surely lead to clouds dispersing and mist clearing. If the fifth line moves to generate the third line, or combines with the third line, then the sun shines brightly with morning glories. If the fourth line overcomes the fifth line, then a rainbow spans the sun. The fifth line belongs to yin and is overcome by the first line moving to overcome it; the moon should be bright, but it will also be obscured by clouds. This is only a brief outline; the rest should be studied on one's own.
The text says: To investigate the conjunctions of the Six Spirits, one must also know their corresponding Five Phases, and consider them together. The original commentary explains: When the Azure Dragon is on a water line and activates, rain will fall immediately. If the Azure Dragon is on a wood line and activates, the dark clouds will not disperse. When the Vermilion Bird is on a fire line and activates, there will certainly be brilliant light. If it enters a earth line and activates, light will shine through the clouds and shine upon people. When Gou Chen is on an earth line and activates, dark mist will stretch all the way to the sky. If it meets the卯 or 辰 lines, the clouds will gradually disperse in the bright light. When the Qie Sha is on the申 or 酉 metal lines and activates, lightning will appear like a golden snake moving swiftly. Even if it does not rain, dark clouds will block the sky all day. When the White Tiger is on a wood line and activates, one must beware of strong winds that may break trees. If it enters the Kan palace and activates, floods will rise and meet the sky. When the Black Tortoise is on a water line and activates, continuous rain will fall for several days. If the Official Ghost line also activates, dark clouds will cover the entire land.
The essay states: When a hexagram meets "Six Clashes," clouds may gather but will eventually disperse; when a line meets "Six Harmony," rain may not yet arrive but can be anticipated. The original commentary explains: When a hexagram is entirely yang and meets Six Clashes, rain is not expected, and although clouds may gather, they will certainly disperse. If a yin hexagram transforms into a yang hexagram, although there may be signs of clouds, rain will not come, and even if it does, it will be minimal. In general, when a water line is activated but is simultaneously opposed by the day branch or suffers from punishment and harm, although rain may occur, it will be weak. When a water line is originally still and is then activated, rain will come. When a hexagram has equal parts yin and yang, it can form Six Harmony. Looking at the water line, as long as there is energy, rain may not have arrived yet, but it can still be anticipated. If a yang hexagram transforms into a yin hexagram, even if it is currently clear, rain is expected; even if fire lines are activated, the clear weather will not last long. If the hexagram is entirely yin, stillness brings rain, but once activated, yang arises, and rain is not expected; however, if the water line is activated, rain may still be expected. If "Great Killing" and "White Tiger" are also present, there will be sudden heavy rain. The essay concludes by saying: As long as there is harmony in wind and rain, the people will be secure and the country will be prosperous.
The Book of Divination and Prophecy says: The World Line and the Inner Trigram (Zhen) represent the earth, and also take into account the year; the Response Line and the Outer Trigram (Hui) represent rain, which is the sky. If the sky overpowers the earth, then the sky will not rain; if the earth overpowers the sky, then there will be abundant rain. The trigram Kan represents the rain deity, and the trigram Xun represents the dragon, and the image of clouds moving and rain falling is seen in the trigram Zhen and Kan. When the trigrams Kan and Li change into each other, it indicates alternating clear and rainy weather, like turning over a palm. When Kan enters the Xun trigram group, it indicates that after the rain, wind will arise; when Kan changes into the trigram Kun, it indicates heavy mist. When the trigram Kun and Zhen alternate and change into each other, thunder and lightning are about to arrive; when the trigram Kun (earth) and Dui (metal) support each other, the fog is thick. If the Azure Dragon is on a water line, rain will certainly come; if it is on a metal or earth line, then it is only cloudy. When the Azure Dragon enters a wood line, the rain will turn clear; when the寅 wood line moves and is on the White Tiger, there will be a strong wind. The Black Tortoise is originally a deity of gloom and obstruction, and during rain divination, it is especially feared when it is on the same line as the Official Ghost line; if there are the Yin and癸 lines, there will certainly be heavy rain; if the亥 and 子 water lines are together, there will be worry about continuous rain.
The book "Boshi Yuan Gui" continues to say: A hexagram of pure yang encountering prosperity and strength should be worried about drought. If someone asks about the time when rain will come, how should we determine it? If the hexagram has the yao of寅 or子, take the branch that matches with them as the time. 寅 combines with亥, so the time should be on the day of亥; 子 combines with丑, so the time should be at the hour of丑, which can be predicted in advance. When a yang hexagram changes into a yin hexagram, rain will come again; when a yin hexagram changes into a yang hexagram, the clouds will suddenly disperse. If the response yao overcomes the day branch, the clouds will quickly disappear; if the world yao comes out from fire, it can clear away all the clouds. The Li trigram is the source of clear weather; if the outer trigram does not have Kan or Dui, the clouds will return to the mountains. If the fire yao overcomes the world yao, the sun will still shine as usual; if the world yao is wood and the hexagram body is earth, it can also be judged as clear weather. If the yao of Chen, Xu, Chou, or Wei is associated with Gou Chen and moves, earth can overcome water, and it can also be said to be clear weather. The principles of wind, clouds, clear weather, and gloom have been revealed here, showing the hidden mechanisms of nature.
The "Donglin Secret Essentials" says that the water line represents rain and the fire line represents clear weather, and these should be interpreted according to the time of day and the aspects and trines at the time of divination. The "Zhuque" (Vermilion Bird) belongs to fire, and when it has strength, it can be interpreted together with the fire line; the "Xuanwu" (Black Tortoise) belongs to water, and when it is in the center and meets the water line, it indicates rain and is considered ominous. For longer-term predictions of rain or clear weather, use the "Li" (Fire) trigram as the sun and the "Kan" (Water) trigram as rain. When the lines are prosperous and strong, the effects come quickly; when they are weak and confined, the effects come slowly. The "Qian" trigram represents clear sky, and the "Dui" trigram represents clouds; the "Kun" and "Gen" trigrams indicate calm weather and the cessation of rain. The "Xun" trigram represents wind, and the "Zhen" trigram represents thunder; further, match the six spirits with the six lines to see how they enter and exit the hexagram. Carefully examine the prosperity and weakness, distinguishing between urgency and delay. As long as the lines do not fall into the void, the judgment will not be wrong. If the "Xun" trigram is divined andInauspicious Sha (malevolent forces) are active, it indicates strong winds destroying objects; if the "Zhen" trigram is divined andInauspicious Sha are active, it indicates sudden thunder injuring people; when the "Kan" trigram is active, hail may fall; the lines of卯, 辰, 巳, 午 and 申 should also be interpreted in the same way. When there is a moving line, judge the urgency based on the order of the changing lines; when all six lines are still, judge based on their prosperity and weakness, which will be clearly evident.
The Eye at the Bottom of the Sea says: the clear or cloudy weather is determined by the "Parents" line; the collision and falling of rain and clouds depend on the generation and overcoming of the Five Phases. The "Children" line governs the霞气 and clouds; in winter, if a water line appears, it indicates ice and frost, which will not change. When the "Wealth" line is active, the weather changes suddenly between clear and cloudy; when the "Siblings" line is active, it indicates wind, fog, dew, and frost. When the "Official Ghost" line is active, it signifies thunder and lightning, dragons rising, heavy rain and thunderstorms, and lightning flashing. It also says: a moving water line indicates rain, a moving earth line indicates clouds, a moving wood line generates wind, and a moving fire line indicates clear weather. If there is no water line in the hexagram, there will be no rain; if there is no fire line among the six lines, the sky will not be bright. The hexagrams Kan and Dui indicate heavy rain, while Kun and Gen indicate cloudy skies. The hexagrams Zhen and Xun indicate wind and thunder, with rain stopping quickly after the storm. One only needs to look at the speed and slowness of the outer trigram to determine the timing. The hexagrams Qian and Li indicate clear weather.
The "Underwater Eye" also says: When divining weather conditions, one should look up at celestial phenomena and down at geographical features. First, check whether the Heavenly Stems and Earthly Branches combine with the Inner Trigram. Then, examine the Outer Trigram to determine the nature. The five combinations of Heavenly Stems each transform into different elements: Jia and Ji combine to form earth, indicating no rain; Ding and Ren combine to form wood, indicating the sky will clear; Yi and Geng combine to form metal, indicating rain; Bing and Xin combine to form water, definitely indicating rain; Wu and Gui combine to form fire, indicating clear weather. If neither the Heavenly Stems nor the Earthly Branches combine, then one should step back and determine the "fixed nature" — the "fixed nature" refers to looking at the Outer Trigram and taking the "solely active" line (a line that moves alone in the hexagram; if one line moves clearly and another line is hidden due to being in conflict with the Day Branch, it is also considered solely active). If the solely active line transforms into the Qian Trigram, it indicates bright sun, moon, and stars; if it transforms into the Kun Trigram, it indicates flying sand and stones along with mist; if it transforms into the Zhen Trigram, it indicates thunder and lightning along with snow; if it transforms into the Xun Trigram, it indicates wind; if it transforms into the Li Trigram, it indicates clear weather; if it transforms into the Kan Trigram, it indicates rain; if it transforms into the Gen Trigram, it indicates dark clouds; if it transforms into the Dui Trigram, it indicates continuous rain. Ji'an Dao Ren said: When people divinate about weather, if the water line moves, it indicates rain; if the fire line moves, it indicates clear weather; if the wood line moves, it indicates wind; if the earth line moves, it indicates overcast weather; if the metal line moves, it indicates rain is about to come. He also said: If the "Wealth" line is active, it indicates clouds and rain; if the "Official Ghost" line is active, it indicates thunder and lightning; if the "Children" line is active, it indicates rainbows and clear skies; if the "Parents" line is active, it indicates alternating clear and rainy weather; if the "Siblings" line is active, it indicates wind, dew, snow, or frost, depending on the situation.
Divination on Geography, Part Three
The "Ghost Valley Method of Divining Lines" in the field of geomancy for burial practices assigns the six lines to represent the relatives associated with the tomb: the first line represents the children's grave, the second line represents the mother's grave, the third line represents the siblings' grave, the fourth line represents the wife's grave, the fifth line represents the father's grave, and the sixth line represents the ancestors' grave. Guo Pu's "Song on the Auspicious and Inauspicious of Burial" states that if the divination results in the first or second generation's hexagram, descendants will become marquises or kings; if it results in the third or fourth generation's hexagram, descendants will become powerful and influential; if it results in the fifth or sixth generation's hexagram, it indicates that the descendants will have no offspring. If the divination results in a wandering soul hexagram, the descendants are mostly engaged in commerce. The returning soul hexagram and the eight pure hexagrams are all ominous signs. Among them, if the Kan hexagram appears, the family fortune will certainly not flourish. When the inner trigram and outer trigram are mutually generating, it is a great blessing. As for where theInauspicious Sha (evil killing) appears on which line and where the movement occurs, further detailed analysis is required.
The Tianxuan Assignment says: A person's birth and death are predetermined, and the length of their life is determined by their natural destiny; the energies of yin and yang protect future generations. The principles and methods behind this should be verified through geography. The original commentary explains: In the universe, pure yin cannot give birth, and pure yang cannot transform; only when there is a combination of one yin and one yang, and the two energies interact, can all things be generated. For example, when heaven intends to give birth to a person, it must rely on the energy of the earth's meridians. Where yin and yang converge, virtuous people will surely emerge. Therefore, as a son, one must properly place the remains of one's parents, so that the deceased may rest in peace and the living may also benefit from their protection.
The text says: When divining about风水, one should not solely seek out mysterious and subtle aspects, but rather carefully examine the lines of the hexagram. Is it a usable place or not? If it has the "Six Harmony," it will conceal wind and gather energy; if it has the "Six Clashes," then water will flow away and sand will scatter. The original note explains: The term "Six Harmony" refers to yin and yang being paired and not separated. The first line and fourth line, the second line and fifth line, the third line and sixth line look towards each other, which is called being affectionate. When discussing geography, it is simply about mountains surrounding and waters embracing, with four animals facing towards it, providing support and protection, and the city walls being complete. The meaning of "Six Harmony" in the hexagram is exactly similar to this situation, and it is a very auspicious place. If the hexagram lacks "Six Harmony," but the world line is within the internal image and the four animals are affectionate, then it is a slightly less favorable good place. Even if the world line is outside the image, but the host and guest are affectionate, the left and right look towards each other, the bright hall is wide, and the water mouth is controlled, it can still be considered a minor conclusion and can still be used. If the hexagram is of the "Six Clashes," then it is a place where mountains fly and water flows away, and there is no need for further detailed analysis.
The text says: The dragon pulse should be carefully observed according to the terrain, in order to grasp the profound principles of heaven. The original commentary points out: These two sentences are the key point of this chapter. The text further says: When entering the mountains, first find the water mouth, and the sixth line should not fall into the void; when arriving at the site of thesite, look at the bright hall, and it is favorable to see the intermediate line being prosperous and strong. The original commentary explains: The sixth line is the position of the water mouth. If it is in harmony with the world line through generation or combination, it is considered to be in a harmonious relationship. If it is further accompanied by the Azure Dragon, the Nobleman, the Wealth, and the Children, then the water mouth is heavily guarded, and there must be extraordinary peaks and ridges surrounding and circling it. If the sixth line is in conflict or control with the world line, then the mountain trend goes straight ahead without sentiment, and the earth energy is dry and lifeless. If the sixth line is in the void, the water mouth is scattered, and the energy cannot be gathered. If it is accompanied by the earth line Official Ghost, there is a temple above the water mouth; below is the water line, above is the wood line, and there is a bridge above the water mouth. The so-called intermediate line refers to the two lines in the middle of the world line: if they are prosperous and strong and meet the month builder, it is called "Ten Thousand Horses Bright Hall"; if they lack vitality, the bright hall is narrow. If the response line generates the world line, the bright hall is wide; if the response line conflicts with the world line, the mountain trend is narrow, and although the four animals stand beside it, it appears cramped. There is a saying: If the bright hall can accommodate ten thousand horses and the water mouth is not ventilated, it is a great auspicious place. The bright hall is where all the waters converge, it should be still rather than dynamic. Stillness allows the energy to gather and rise, while movement leads to the dispersion of energy. If the water line brings auspicious spirits to generate or control the intermediate line, then all the waters from all sides converge into the bright hall.
The text says: The World Line is the main mountain (sitting mountain), and one should understand the scale of the "nine stars"; the Response Line is the secondary peak (case mountain), and one must examine the fixed nature of the Five Phases. The original commentary explains: The World Line is the mountain beneath it, and some say the First Line or Second Line is the sitting mountain. If the World Line is strong and flourishing, the sitting mountain is high and thick; if the World Line is weak and confined or falls into emptiness, the sitting mountain is thin and shallow. If the World Line is in巳,亥,寅, or申, the mountain is grand and the land is strong; if it is in辰,戌,丑, or未, it must be on a broad flat land; if it is in亥 or子, water must flow out from the pit; if it is in辰 or巳 and accompanied byInauspicious Sha, there is wind in the pit; if White Tiger is accompanied byInauspicious Sha and meets emptiness, there are white ants in the pit. If the World Line is accompanied by various auspicious deities, the sitting mountain is dignified and the pit is clean. If the World Line belongs to wood, the mountain must have dense forests; if it belongs to water, it must be near flowing springs and living water; the rest should be judged in the same way.
The original commentary continues: When the "Official Ghost" is activated on the World Line, there is an ancient tomb hidden beneath the mountain; if the "Official Ghost" is activated and also meets the void, it must be a ruined site, where the grave is broken but the bones remain. When divining about tombs, one must examine the patterns of the "Nine Stars" to know the scale of the mountain shape. If the World Line is occupied by "Tanlang," the mountain is sharp and elegant with towering peaks, matching the form of a star of wood; if it is "Jumen," the mountain shape resembles an inverted pot, or like a bell, or like a granary; if it is "Luchun," the mountain shape is chaotic and the coming pulse is unclear, resembling a dragon or a snake; if it is "Wenqu," the shape is like a jade tablet or a swimming fish, with surrounding mountains and flowing water; if it is "Lianzhen," the mountain shape is emotionless, or the form is not upright, with concave areas on the left and right; if it is "Wuqu," it is the form of a water star, also resembling a dragon or a snake; if it changes to "Pojun," the mountain has a broken appearance, or is slanted, the coming pulse is unclear, or broken and intermittent; if it meets "Zuofu," the mountain is elegant and affectionate, resembling a flying phoenix. The detailed explanation of the Nine Stars is found in the chapter on marriage. In general, prosperity and strength are considered auspicious.
The original commentary continues: If the mountain's line carries the 'Children' and the Nobleman and is prosperous and strong, the mountain will be tall and elegant. If it comes to be the World Line or harmonizes with the World Line, the mountain will be upright and affectionate. If the mountain's line falls into the empty and lost position, the mountain facing it will be improper. If it carriesInauspicious Sha and meets a clash, it will be a slanting and broken mountain. If the Response Line is at 'Mourning' or 'Decline', the mountain will certainly be low and small. If the Response Line belongs to metal, the mountain will be a round peak like a metal star; if it belongs to wood, the mountain will be a sharp peak, like a literary pen peak; if it belongs to water, it will rise and fall like auspicious clouds; if it belongs to fire and is prosperous and strong, it will resemble a pen holder peak; if it belongs to earth, it will be a square mountain, high like an imperial screen, low like a horizontal zither. If the Response Line shares the position with the Azure Dragon, it will often take the form of a coiled dragon; if it shares the position with the Black Tortoise, it may take the form of a returning dragon looking back to its ancestors. If the Response Line is stronger than the World Line, then the mountain will be high and the seat mountain will be low. If the Response Line carriesInauspicious Sha and clashes with the World Line, it becomes a凶 case of pounding the chest and wiping tears, even if the overall situation is favorable, it will ultimately be unsatisfactory.
The text says: The twenty-four directions of a grave site are divided, yet the matters they represent are countless. The original commentary explains: If the Wood line holds the world line, it governs the Eastern direction of Zhen, which includes the directions of Yin, Jia, Mao, and Yi; if the Metal line holds the world line, it governs the Western direction of Dui, which includes the directions of Shen, Geng, You, and Xin; if the Fire line holds the world line, it governs the Southern direction of Li, which includes the directions of Wu, Bing, Si, and Ding; if the Water line holds the world line, it governs the Northern direction of Kan, which includes the directions of Xu, Gui, Zi, and Ren; and the directions of Chen, Xu, Chou, and Wei are divided among the four directions of Gen, Qian, Xun, and Kun, each with its own suitability. Also: The response line represents the direction. When divining the direction of a grave, if the response line carries auspicious spirits and is strong and flourishing, it must be a line that attracts official positions and wealth, and the direction will gather auspiciousness; if it gathers evil spirits, the direction will certainly face misfortune, directly opposite to it, and the direction will be inauspicious. Among the twenty-four directions, only the directions of Chen and Xu are afflicted by the 'Kui Gang' and Tian Luo Di Wang, which are places where the nobleman does not come, making the direction inauspicious. All other directions have their own suitable aspects. The auspiciousness or inauspiciousness of the land depends entirely on the divination lines. The statement by Cang Ping that the response line represents the direction is exactly this meaning.
The text says: "When the Azure Dragon moves and overcomes the World Line, one must beware of a strong dragon envying the master; when the strong White Tiger meets a clash, one must beware of it raising its head and showing arrogance." The original commentary explains: the dragon sand and tiger sand in the mountains correspond to the Azure Dragon and White Tiger in the hexagram. Although the Azure Dragon is a favorable deity, it is also undesirable if it overcomes the World Line; it is best if it generates the World Line. If the White Tiger is too strong, it becomes an image of arrogance and strength, which is not auspicious. Whenever the Azure Dragon appears, the Wealth and Children are transformed into Wealth and Children, and the two arms of the Azure Dragon also generate the World Line, which are all favorable. If the Hexagram Body and the Azure Dragon meet an empty position, it indicates a missing depression on the left side. When the Azure Dragon generates and harmonizes with the World Line, the sand of the Azure Dragon can rise up. If the Azure Dragon is closely attached to the World Line and overcomes it, it is called "pressing the site"; if it moves to overcome the World Line, it must be a strong dragon envying the master. If the World Line instead overcomes the Azure Dragon, one must beware of the Azure Dragon losing its site. When the White Tiger generates the World Line, the sand of the White Tiger stands by its side; if the White Tiger both overcomes the World Line and the Azure Dragon, then the tiger is strong and the dragon is weak; otherwise, it is the White Tiger that is lacking, and the depression is exposed to wind.
The original commentary continues: When the White Tiger is prosperous and strong and meets a clash, it indicates the image of raising fists and looking up. If the Dragon and Tiger lines are harmonious, regardless of their strength or weakness, the two sides will certainly arrive together; but if they clash, the Dragon and Tiger will definitely fight, which is not auspicious. If the Azure Dragon and White Tiger are prosperous and strong, the mountains will be high; if they are weak and confined, the mountains will be low and small. If they are in mutual generation or harmony with the World Line, they will embrace and show affection; if they are in mutual control or clash with the World Line, they will approach closely and press against the front. By distinguishing the left and right sides, one can determine the fortune. If the Azure Dragon carries auspicious deities, the mountain on the left will be tall and elegant; if the White Tiger carries auspicious deities, the mountain on the right will be grand and majestic; but ifInauspicious Sha (evil spirits) are added, the mountains will be rugged and barren. If the mountain on the right falls into the void, it means there is a Dragon but no Tiger; if the mountain on the left falls into the void, it means there is a Tiger but no Dragon; if both sides fall into the void, it means there is neither a Dragon nor a Tiger.
The text says: "The Azure Dragon" breaks the peak on the left side, "The White Tiger" refers to the mountain on the right side; what is favorable is mutual generation and harmony, what is to be avoided is mutual control and conflict. The original commentary explains: if the Azure Dragon is prosperous and strong with a wood line, it indicates lush and flourishing forests; if it has a soil line, then the mountain ranges are majestic and towering: the elegance of this place comes from the left. If the White Tiger is strong and prosperous with a water line, it indicates long and distant springs and water sources; if it has a metal line, then the rocks are extraordinary and beautiful: the elegance of this place comes from the right. Both are favorable when they generate the World Line, and most unfavorable when they control the World Line.
The text says: "If the Official Ghost is present in the chart, there must be hidden corpses and ancient tombs; if the empty position is adjacent, where would there not be depressions that allow wind to enter?" The original commentary explains: although the hexagram may contain the four earthly branches of Chen, Xu, Chou, and Wei (which represent burial grounds), one must also examine the Official Ghost. If the Official Ghost is located within the chart and hidden beneath the World Line, there must be an old tomb beneath the site. If the Official Ghost is on the Response Line, there must be ancient tombs on the case mountain. If it is on the left, there must be an old grave on the Azure Dragon's arm; if it is on the right, there must have been a relocation of graves on the White Tiger's position. The term "left and right" refers to the Azure Dragon and White Tiger lines. The Azure Dragon and White Tiger lines should remain still and not move; if they do move, there must be paths of people passing through and depressions allowing wind to enter. If there is also a Wood line present, there must be wind coming from the寅 (Yin) and卯 (Mao) directions. By identifying which line falls into the empty position, one can determine where the depression and wind entry exist. If the Official Ghost line is in the empty position, the grave site has already been damaged, indicating an unstable tomb, which is an inauspicious sign.
The text says: "Gou Chen" if it is in the World Line, will bring a continuous and powerful dragon line; "Zhu Que" if it is on the Response Line, will have two layers of case mountains facing each other. The original note explains: Gou Chen is the ancestor of the dragon line, if it falls on the Wood Line or is on the World Line, the coming dragon line will certainly be long and continuous, rising and falling like a living dragon, also indicating a high mountain as the seat. Zhu Que represents the case mountains, if it is on the Response Line, the case mountains will be layered; if it is on the Outer Trigram, there will certainly be two layers of case mountains facing each other. The text also says: if asking about "Teng Sha", that is the method to determine the site - if it is prosperous and strong and shares the same position as the deity, it is a true dragon; if it falls in the empty or is on the墓 or 绝 position, it should be considered a dead site. The original note explains: in the hexagram, Teng Sha determines the site, prosperity and strength indicate a true dragon, while weakness and confinement indicate a dead site.
The text says: After discussing mountains thoroughly, we should consider water together. By looking at the positions of the亥 and 子 lines, we can know whether there is water or not; by observing the movement of the lines, we can distinguish between stagnant and flowing water. The original commentary explains: If the hexagram lacks the亥 and 子 water lines, there must be no pond or stream; even if there is a water line, if it is in the墓 or 绝 positions, it is a dry and broken place. Only by looking at the water lines: those that are active are flowing water, and those that are still are stagnant water. The text further says: To recognize the distance of the water source, look at the prosperity or decline of the water line's position; to determine if the water flow is winding and affectionate, examine the generation and harmony of the water line. The original commentary explains: If the water line is prosperous and strong, the source is far and the water never dries up throughout the four seasons; if the water position is weak and confined, the source is shallow and short. If the water line is in mutual generation and harmony with the world line, the water flows winding and affectionately; if it is in mutual control with the world line, the water will cut off the foot and pass by the grave. If the water line is at the long life position and comes to attack the world line, it is called shooting the heart and hitting the ribs. If the water is in the middle line, it is the "waist belt water" that surrounds. If the water line falls into the empty position, the water will flow past the grave and then jump back. If the world and response lines are in conflict, the water comes straight.
The essay says: If there is no water line in the hexagram, one should investigate the "hidden line," which is the Black Tortoise. The original commentary explains: If none of the six lines are water, then use the Black Tortoise line to determine; if the Black Tortoise is in the empty position, then there is certainly no water in that place. The essay also says: If it meets good fortune, it brings good fortune; if it meets misfortune, it brings misfortune. The original commentary explains: If the Black Tortoise is accompanied by auspicious spirits, it indicates that water is beneficial and harmonious with me, which is very auspicious; if it is accompanied byInauspicious Sha, then it is unbeneficial and inharmonious, leading to misfortune. Generally, althoughInauspicious Spirit may be strong, as long as they do not harm the world line, they are not considered harmful.

The book "Donglin Secret Essentials" says: When divining about a burial site for the deceased, it is most favorable if the inner trigram generates the outer trigram. However, for divining about a dwelling house and worldly affairs, another method of interpretation must be used. A divination that involves the yin element is considered highly auspicious. It is most undesirable if the hexagram's energy is accompanied by rising yang energy. If the inner trigram generates the outer trigram, one must also consider which specific trigram is being generated. Each of the eight trigrams corresponds to a specific number of years in which its effects will manifest. The trigrams Qian and Kun indicate good fortune for parents and the junior branch; the trigrams Zhen and Xun relate to the eldest branch; the trigrams Kan and Li pertain to the middle branch; and the youngest branch is determined by the trigrams Gen and Dui. Knowing which direction the trigram belongs to reveals whether it is beneficial or harmful to people, and can also indicate success or failure, advancement or retreat. Below, the eight trigrams are used to determine the shape of mountains: A mountain associated with the trigram Qian resembles a galloping horse or a soaring dragon; a mountain associated with Kun has a flat terrain, like a lying ox. A mountain associated with Xun resembles a long snake, winding away continuously; Qian also represents a phoenix or a horse, and these images are used similarly. A mountain associated with Kan is winding and twisted, often with streams and ravines; a mountain associated with Dui has a formation resembling a flock of sheep descending in disorder. A mountain associated with Gen is rocky and lush, with green and elegant scenery; a mountain associated with Zhen resembles a dragon or a horse soaring into the clouds. Although the forms of the sand and water in the compass, divided into 120 parts, are all present, one should still examine the prosperity and strength of the trigrams' energies, and proceed in a cyclic manner.
The "Donglin Secret Manual" also uses the Eight Trigrams to determine the surrounding features of a burial site: the Qian Trigram indicates the presence of a temple hall nearby, the Kan Trigram suggests proximity to water; the Kun Trigram represents flat fields with wide expanses of land; the Gen Trigram signifies mountains and cliffs; the Zhen Trigram indicates a cluster of peaks arranged in order. The Li Trigram is near caves, rock holes, and metalworking workshops; the Dui Trigram is close to deep streams and nearby temples and pagodas; the Xun Trigram is located by a pond facing sharp peaks. If the Trigram energies are prosperous and strong, they bring unusual auspiciousness; if weak and confined, the auspiciousness fades away. The Five Generations Trigram may indicate a sparse population; among the Eight Pure Trigrams, only the Qian Trigram is associated with nobility, and thus suitable for relocation of the burial; only the Kun Trigram is considered appropriate, while the other six Eight Pure Trigrams may lead to descendants being poor and isolated. The third line is internal, and the burial site will not be low; the fourth and fifth lines are high and central, with complete supporting features. If one obtains an Eight Pure Trigram, it is likely necessary to move to a mountain peak for a new burial. To distinguish soil colors, they should be arranged according to the five colors. Although the wandering soul Trigram may be favorable, it will only bring success after leaving the hometown; although the returning soul Trigram is favorable, it may still result in injuries or disabilities. If the Trigram energies are prosperous and strong, and the deceased ascends to a higher state, it is a favorable site, which can ensure the descendants' long prosperity and virtuous children.
The "Underwater Eye" says: When building a mound and establishing a tomb to inquire about matters after death, the five elements "Parents," "Siblings," "Wealth," "Children," and "Official Ghost" should all be present and not harmed. If a fire element moves, it must be a place of returning souls; the tomb site should be on the mountain, located at the position of the mountain trigram. If the fire elements of the snake and horse are in the fire trigram and transform into "Parents," there will be termite damage after burial, causing the deceased to be restless. If the "Siblings" element is associated with a wooden element and moves, the wind will be dangerous; if the "Wealth" element moves, the family will decline and misfortunes will come naturally. If there is a water element in the tomb, it indicates a spring leaking and ditches breaking; if there is a metal element on top of the tomb, it means the tomb is on a rocky hill. As long as the "Children" element is not harmed, the descendants will have no problems. The original note explains: Before burial, the "Parents" element is used as the useful god; after burial, when looking at the remains of the deceased, the "Official Ghost" element is used as the useful god. When the "Official Ghost" is strong and moves to attack the world line, it is the most dangerous. The "Official Ghost" should always be weak and quiet. The world line represents the head of the family, the response line represents the younger generation, the wealth element represents the family's property, and the children element represents worship. These should all be quiet and not active.
The Book of Divination and Prophecy says: When divining about a burial site, first examine the surrounding areas for empty and barren places. If the inner trigram (Zhen) and outer trigram (Hui) mutually generate each other, it is a great blessing and prosperity. If the world line is in the first, second, third, or fourth lines, or if the divination results in a returning soul hexagram, it is favorable. However, if it is the fifth world line hexagram or a wandering soul hexagram, the place is certainly not good. The height of the tomb is determined by the hexagram: if a yang line is in the hexagram and is prosperous and strong, it is suitable for someone who will hold official positions; if a yin line has vitality, it indicates people who will become soldiers or warriors; if there is no vitality and the line is weak and confined, then it is only for the poor and lowly. If the hexagram's energy is weak and confined but falls in the growth position, it represents the mountain surrounding the site. This method also states: if the parents are buried on that land, and the surrounding area falls into the empty and barren position, the land will eventually be considered inauspicious. If凶杀 (evil spirits) and冲破 (breaking up) occur there, it is ominous. If the official ghost line is in the tomb, it actually brings good fortune and prosperity. A pure yang hexagram (Qian) that is prosperous and strong brings many benefits; a pure yin hexagram (Kun) that dominates brings immediate misfortune. If the fire line and the official ghost line both fall on the戌 (Xu) position, this is called "co-burial," and no other day needs to be chosen. If both official ghost lines in the same hexagram are tomb lines, it also belongs to the category of co-burial, and this case is considered the first among all hexagrams.
