Charting guides: Liu Yao Divination Chart, Da Yan Yarrow Stalk Divination

The mountain is judged based on the World Line. If the World Line is in a state of birth or prosperity, the mountain is high and thick; if it falls in death,墓,绝, or胎, the mountain is low, small, and thin. If the World Line is in寅,申,巳, or亥, the mountain is grand and the land is solid; if it is in子,午,卯, or酉, the landscape is upright and open; if it is in辰,戌,丑, or未, the land is flat and wide. When the World Line meets a source of life and a harmonious combination, the mountains on both sides are supportive and harmonious; if it carriesInauspicious Sha and meets a clash, the mountain shape is crooked and broken — the small note says that carrying '破军' and '破碎杀' also results in the same. If the World Line is accompanied by '贵人', '天喜', '青龙', or '天德', the mountain is dignified; if it is accompanied by '子孙', the mountain is clear and full of life; if it is combined with '青龙', the mountain is majestic. If the World Line is accompanied by '妻财', the mountain shape is sharp and peculiar; if it is further combined with '青龙', it indicates two mountain ranges coming together.

The World Line is on a Wood element in the Longevity position, and the hexagram is in the Zhen or Xun palace, indicating that the burial ground must be near dense forests. If the Wood element is weak, the trees will be withered. If the World Line forms a Metal group and is strong in the Gen palace, there will be hills all around. If it forms a Earth group and is strong in the Kun palace, it will be near farmland. If it forms a Fire group and is strong in the Li palace, there will be no trees on the mountains, but there will be kilns, forges, or busy markets nearby. If it forms a Water group and is strong in the Kan or Dui palace, it will be near streams and deep pools.

Fengying Divination: Six Criteria for Determining the Burial Site and Direction of the Tomb

Inside the grave, the World Line represents the position; outside, where the grave is buried, the branch that forms a墓 (burial) with the World Line represents the墓 (burial) position. The branch that conflicts with the World Line is called the "穴向" (direction of the grave), and the branch that combines with the墓 (burial) branch is called the "墓向" (direction of the burial). The "穴向" and "墓向" do not necessarily appear clearly in the hexagram. For example, in the hexagram "姤", the World Line is held by the branch "丑". Since "丑" conflicts with "未", "未" is the "穴向"; "丑" is buried in "辰", and "辰" combines with "酉", so "酉" is the "墓向". If the branch "申" (which belongs to the day branch or moving line) blocks both "未" and "酉", it indicates that the direction of the inner coffin position and the burial gate are different. In reality, the "穴向" and "墓向" are originally the same, and if they are not blocked, they are considered to be the same direction; one should not be overly rigid about this. This passage is from the "Eight Gods Divination Method".

Fengying Divination: Seven Burial Sites and Their Directions

The world line is the central point, and the branch that conflicts with the world line indicates the direction of the central point. The two lines before the world line represent the front of the central point, while the two lines after represent the back. Only in the case of the returning soul hexagram, which symbolizes returning from outside to inside, should the second line and the first line be considered as the front, and the fourth and fifth lines as the back. For example, if the world line is the branch of Zi, then the direction is Wu. However, this method is only applicable when the world line is prosperous and strong, and is supported by the day branch. If the world line is active, or if the month builder or day branch conflicts with the world line, then we should instead take the line immediately before the world line that generates the world line to determine the direction. If the line before the world line instead conflicts with the world line, then we take the line before as the back and the line after as the front, and use the branch directly opposite to the world line to determine the direction. For instance, if the world line is Zi, we reverse it to say that it is sitting in Wu and facing Zi. This is from Ye Li's "Jin Nang Ji."

If the direction of the front is in harmony with the heavenly stems and earthly branches of the year, month, day, and hour through mutual generation and compatibility, or if it is accompanied by the Nobleman, Fortune Virtue, Heavenly Virtue, or the禄神 and is in a favorable and vigorous position, this is called "inviting the official and receiving the salary," which is considered a favorable direction. If the direction is harmed by the heavenly stems and earthly branches through punishment, harm, control, or destruction, or if it falls into an empty or ruined position, and is further combined with the亡神,劫杀, or刑刃, then it is definitely a direction leading to misfortune. Among the twenty-four directions, only the directions of Chen and Xu are occupied by the Heavenly Gang and River Chief, which are the positions of the Heavenly Net and Earthly Net, places where the Nobleman does not come, and facing these directions is considered inauspicious.

Fengying Divination: The Eight Directions Before and After Causing Harm

Whenever the several lines before and after the grave site are affected by the day branch, if the parents line is activated and harms, injures, controls, or breaks the world line, it indicates that there is a house obstructing the grave. If the children line is activated and harms the world line, it indicates that there is a road obstructing the grave. If the wealth line is activated by the day branch and harms the world line, it indicates that there is a building or tall tree obstructing the grave. If the siblings line is activated by the day branch and harms the world line, it indicates that there is a water outlet or gate obstructing the grave. If the official ghost line is activated by the day branch and harms the world line, if this line is yang, it indicates that temples or shrines are obstructing the grave; if it is yin, it indicates that another grave is obstructing the grave.

When the official ghost爻 of wood is activated and harms the world line爻, if it is in the position of growth, it indicates obstruction by pine and cypress trees; if in the position of death or decay, it indicates obstruction by bamboo thickets; if in the position of burial, it indicates obstruction by trees over graves; if combined with the azure dragon, it indicates obstruction by bridges. When the official ghost爻 of fire, represented by the vermilion bird, is activated and harms the world line爻, if it is in the position of growth, it indicates obstruction by brick kilns and stoves. When the official ghost爻 of earth, represented by the hook star, is activated and harms the world line爻, if it is prosperous and strong, it indicates obstruction by ancient temples and city walls; if it is weak, it indicates obstruction by ancient tombs. When the official ghost爻 of fire, represented by the coiling snake, is activated and harms the world line爻, it indicates obstruction by roads. When the official ghost爻 of metal, represented by the white tiger, is activated and harms the world line爻, it indicates obstruction by rocky hills or mountain peaks shaped like knives. When the official ghost爻 of water, represented by the black tortoise, is activated and harms the world line爻, if it is in a position of birth and strength, it indicates obstruction by streams and springs; if it is in the position of death, burial, decay, or fetal stage, it indicates obstruction by dry ponds and marshes. As for which direction the obstruction comes from, it is determined by the eight trigrams.

Fengying Divination: The Nine People's Land Theory

The inner trigram represents the land, and the outer trigram represents people in a grave. If both trigrams are prosperous and strong, it indicates a place with spiritual energy and outstanding people. If both trigrams are weak and declining, it shows the grave lacks life qi, leading to loss of descendants and wealth. If the inner trigram overcomes the outer trigram, there will be loss of descendants. If the outer trigram overcomes the inner trigram, it is considered auspicious. If the inner trigram generates the outer trigram, descendants will multiply. If the outer trigram generates the inner trigram, the descendants will be ordinary. To determine which branch of the family will flourish or decline, look at which palace the outer trigram belongs to. The trigrams Qian and Kun represent parents, governing all branches. If the outer trigram is Qian or Kun and is generated by the inner trigram, all branches will be prosperous. If the outer trigram is Zhen or Xun, it represents the eldest son, and if generated by the inner trigram, the eldest son will prosper. If the outer trigram is Kan or Li, it represents the second son; if it is Gen or Dui, it represents the third son. If the outer trigram is overcome by the inner trigram, then the second or third son will be unfavorable.

As for the specific matters of misfortune or fortune, they should be explained according to the nature of the supernatural forces involved—note that one may refer to the section on "Residence Divination" in the text. To determine the year when the outcome will occur, use the numbers of the Luo Square: Kan is one, Kun is two, Zhen is three, Xun is four, five is associated with Kun, Qian is six, Dui is seven, Gen is eight, and Li is nine. By following these numbers, one can determine how many years later the outcome will manifest. The above explanation is based on the overall image of the hexagram. If the overall image is weak and confined or falls into emptiness, then one should instead consider the second line representing the land and the fifth line representing people: if the second line is strong and prosperous, it indicates a favorable land and a flourishing family; if the fifth line is strong and prosperous, it indicates a thriving population. If the second line is weak and confined, the land will not bring fortune; if the fifth line declines, the population will be sparse, and if it falls into emptiness, the population will be cut off. When the person line overcomes the land line, it mainly indicates the need for soil cultivation and improvement; when the land line overcomes the person line, it indicates misfortune for the family. Only when the second and fifth lines are harmonious, supportive, and in harmony will it be considered auspicious.

To determine which branch is prosperous and which is declining, focus primarily on the坟爻 (burial line) and arrange accordingly — a note says to also refer to the respective palace. The line above the坟爻 is the first branch, the second line above is the fourth branch, and the third line above is the sixth branch. The坟爻 itself is the second branch, the line below it is the third branch, and the second line below is the fifth branch. To determine which affairs are affected by fortune or misfortune, judge according to the nature of the supernatural forces (神煞) involved. To determine when the effect will occur, use the numbers of the Five Phases (五行) in the order of generation: water is one, fire is two, wood is three, metal is four, and earth is five. If the phase is prosperous and strong (旺相), double the number; if it is resting (休), use the original number; if it is in captivity or death (囚、死), halve the number. For detailed information, see the section on tombs in the chapter "Home and Household Divination" (家宅占).

Divination on Buried Graves: The Tenth Section on Already Buried Graves

A burial site that has already been interred uses the world line as the burial pit, the official ghost as the deceased, the parents as the head of the family, the siblings as the younger generation, the wife's wealth as the family's property, and the children as the main person performing the rites. If the world line is empty, the burial pit is not properly aligned. If the world line holds the water trigram official ghost or if the water trigram of the kan palace holds the world line, it indicates there is water in the pit. If the world line holds chen or si and carries the 'gou chen' affliction, or if the wood trigram of the xun palace, representing siblings, holds the world line and is active, it indicates there is a wind element in the pit—note that xun represents wind, siblings represent wind, and an active wood trigram also represents wind. If the world line holds an empty 'bai hu' trigram, it indicates there are termites in the pit, or that cats and raccoons have made nests inside; note that this also applies when there are two instances of emptiness.

The world line holds the Azure Dragon, Heavenly Virtue, Nobleman, and Heavenly Joy, indicating a clean and pure site; if it also meets the condition of growth, then a burial ground has already been prepared for the deceased. If the world line is yin and the hexagram's palace is also yin, it indicates a cold and阴寒 place; if the world line is yang and the hexagram's palace is also yang, it indicates a high and open area. If the official ghost falls into an empty position, the body has already decayed; if the official ghost is in a declining or dying position, it indicates a desolate grave without vitality; if the official ghost is strong and prosperous but falls into an empty position, it means the grave has been broken but the bones still remain. If the hexagram lacks the official ghost, or if it is a wandering soul hexagram with the official ghost activated, it indicates that the soul of the deceased does not enter the grave and wanders outside.

If the hexagram lacks children, or if the children are in a state of emptiness or in a dead end, or if the parents in the present are prosperous and active, then the descendants will produce a man without sons. If the hexagram lacks wealth, or if the wealth is in a state of emptiness or in a dead end, or if the siblings in the present are prosperous and active, then the descendants will produce a widower. If the hexagram lacks officials and ghosts, or if the officials and ghosts are in a state of emptiness or in a dead end, or if the children in the present are prosperous and active, then the descendants will produce a widow. If the hexagram lacks parents, or if the parents are in a state of emptiness or in a dead end, or if the wealth in the present is prosperous and active, then the descendants will produce an orphan who has lost his father. If the hexagram lacks siblings, or if the siblings are in a state of emptiness or in a dead end, or if the officials and ghosts in the present are prosperous and active, then the descendants will be alone and without siblings.

The three transmissions of year, month, and day generate and harmonize with the children line, indicating many male descendants; if the children line is in a prosperous and strong state, the children are intelligent and handsome. Even if the children line is weak but receives support and generation, the number of descendants may be small but not extinct. If the children line is combined with the official ghost and nobleman, the descendants will pass the imperial examination; if combined with the azure dragon and nobleman, the descendants will be wealthy and skilled. If combined with punishment and cutting, there will be wicked people. If combined with heavenly virtue and heavenly joy, there will be good people. If the children line is in conflict and active, it indicates leaving the original family to be adopted by another surname. If the empty children line supports the world line, it indicates that the collateral branch from another surname becomes prosperous. If a hidden official ghost is beneath the children line, or if a hidden children line transforms into an active children line, it indicates marrying a son-in-law from another family. If the wealth line carries the禄神 and is prosperous and quiet, it indicates wealth and prosperity; if the wealth line transforms into the official ghost or siblings, or is empty, broken, or located in a declining and dying place, it indicates poverty.

When theChildren line encounters 'Jie Sha' or enters a tomb, offspring will suffer. If the parents line is empty and accompanied by 'Jie Sha' and is activated, then if it is a yang line, the father is harmed; if it is a yin line, the mother is harmed. If the wife's wealth line enters a tomb and is accompanied by 'Yin Sha' and is activated, then if it is a yang line, the wife is harmed; if it is a yin line, the concubine is harmed. If the world line is on the wife's wealth line and is accompanied by 'Gou Chen Sha' and is activated, it indicates that the tomb will be dug up by others. If theChildren line transforms into itself, there will be misfortune for the child; if the wife's wealth line transforms into itself, the wife and servants will scatter; if the parents line transforms into itself, there will be a need to move the grave; if the official ghost line transforms into itself, the burial site is not auspicious; if the siblings line transforms into itself, the family will be in disarray with frequent disputes. If the official ghost line is prosperous and strong but quiet, the deceased will be safe and auspicious. If the year ruler and the fifth line both generate the子孙 line, the offspring will achieve high status — a small note says that the year ruler and the fifth line both symbolize the emperor. If the world line is prosperous and strong, and the hexagram body generates it, while the official ghost line enters a tomb, then the worldly affairs will flourish and the ancestral tomb will be peaceful. A small note says that details regarding wealth, poverty, and illness are explained in the book 'Shenming Zhan'.

Divination on Burial Sites · 11. Unburied Sites

For land that has not yet been buried, the World Line represents the main mountain, the Second Line is the main burial site, and 「Teng She」 represents the side burial site. The Parents' Line represents the entire burial ground. If the Second Line is empty, broken, or in a dead position, there is no main burial site. If 「Teng She」 is empty, broken, or in a dead position, there is no side burial site. If the卦 lacks Children's Line, the风水 is scattered. If there is no Brothers' Line, the terrain cannot retain life energy and there is no coming pulse. If there is no Parents' Line, the burial site cannot be formed. If there is no Officials' Ghost Line, there is no life energy in the burial site. If there is no Wealth Line, the mountain does not grow trees, the Children are poor and cannot produce noble people. If the burial site line meets the month breaker and is accompanied by 「Bai Hu」, there is an ancient tomb. If the burial site line is empty in the Officials' Ghost, it is definitely a waste site. If the burial site line carries the墓 of Officials' Ghost, there is an old tomb. If the two lines on both sides of the burial site line are empty, there is wind affecting the site. If the burial site line is accompanied by 「Si Wei」, the land is abandoned and cannot be used.

Divination on Burial Sites: The Heights of Twelve Gravesites

The height of the burial site is determined by the World Line as the Useful God: if the World Line is supported by birth or harmony, it is suitable to bury in a low place; if it is confronted by six clashes, it is suitable to bury in a high place. If the World Line is in the first or second line, the burial should be in a low place; if it is in the third or fourth line, the burial should be on the half mountain; if it is in the fifth or sixth line, the burial should be in a high place. This conclusion is based on the World Line being prosperous and strong. If the World Line is in the state of death, tomb, extinction, or embryo, or is subjected to punishment, harm, control, or confrontation by the year, month, and day "three transmissions," then the burial should be in a flat and open land. When the hexagram is an eight-pure or wandering soul hexagram, it indicates a reversal of yin and yang, and the burial should be on the shady hill or stone ridge. For all hexagrams of six clashes, they indicate water flowing away and sand flying, unable to retain energy; for pure yin hexagrams, nothing grows; for pure yang hexagrams, nothing transforms, thus no blessings can be obtained, even if all six lines are quiet, it is not suitable to use. In addition, if the World Line moves and produces a water line that is confronted, it indicates that the burial site will be flooded and washed away by flood.

Fengying Divination: Thirteen Cases of Mountain Formations

The case mountain uses the response line and the Vermilion Bird. If the response line also carries the Vermilion Bird, the case mountain has two layers. If the Vermilion Bird on the response line is strong and the world line is weak, the seat mountain is low and the case mountain is high; if the Vermilion Bird on the response line is in a dead, tomb, end, or fetal state while the world line is strong and prosperous, the seat mountain is high and the case mountain is low. If the Vermilion Bird on the response line generates and harmonises with the world line, the case mountain is upright and harmonious; if it falls into emptiness and moves, the case mountain is not upright; if it carriesInauspicious Sha and meets a clash, the case mountain is crooked and broken. If it carries the禄神 and is in a prosperous and vital state, the case mountain is lush and beautiful. The case line belongs to metal, so the mountain shape is round, smooth, and elegant, or resembles an upside-down pot; if it is in the Gen palace, there will be stones in front.

The line belongs to wood, and the mountain appears round on top and pointed at the base. When prosperous and strong, it resembles a writing brush peak; when weak, it looks like a small writing brush. If it belongs to water, the mountain is low and winding, with a dynamic appearance, resembling waves. If it belongs to fire, the mountain is sharp and elegant, like a knife edge or a brush tip. When prosperous and strong, it appears as a brush rack peak. If it belongs to earth, the mountain is square and flat, slightly bulky. When prosperous and strong, it resembles an imperial screen; when weak, it looks like a horizontal table. If the response line is the Vermilion Bird fire line and is prosperous and active, the mountain must have been burned, with narrow sides, high front mountain and low back mountain. At this time, water line must be active to control the fire, which is considered auspicious.

The fire line with the Vermilion Bird is still, and the mountain scenery is majestic and worth seeing. When the fire line with the Vermilion Bird appears together with the Parents line, it certainly indicates a writing desk mountain. When the Vermilion Bird line is combined with the Earth line and is activated, and is further punished and clashed by the Month Builder and the Day Branch, this is what the diviners call "the Vermilion Bird opening its mouth." In addition, when the Vermilion Bird is activated, there is a path on the mountain ridge. If the Response Line is accompanied by the Azure Dragon, it forms a spiral mountain ridge; if the Azure Dragon is further combined with the Nobleman, it forms an outstanding literary peak. If the Response Line is occupied by the Black Tortoise, it forms the shape of a dragon returning to its ancestors, but when it is weak, it becomes a probing hill projecting sideways. If it is combined with the Gou Chen, the surrounding mountains gather from all sides; if it is combined with the Boa Snake, the mountain ridge looks long and winding like a centipede or a scorpion; if it is combined with the White Tiger, the mountain peak resembles a sword or a dagger and is rocky. When the Response Line is at the Official Ghost's grave, there are many auspicious places on the opposite mountain.

Forty-Second Divination on Tombs: Bright Hall

The Mingtang is determined by the third and fourth lines as the useful god. If the intermediate lines are prosperous and strong, the Mingtang is wide; if they are weak and confined, the Mingtang is narrow. If the response line generates the world line, the Mingtang is open like the sea; if the response line conflicts with the world line, the Mingtang is cramped and oppressive. If the intermediate lines fall in empty or墓,绝, or胎 positions, the Mingtang is restricted. If the intermediate lines are still, it indicates a gathering of energy in a secluded hall. If the intermediate lines are active, the energy of the hall is dispersed. If the intermediate lines are in the month builder position, the Mingtang is large enough to hold ten thousand horses. If the water line is combined with 'Nobleman', 'Luxury God', 'Azure Dragon', and 'Heavenly Joy' and becomes active to generate and harmonise with the intermediate line, it indicates that water from all four sides flows into the Mingtang.

Between the lines, if the Gengyin or Xinmao lines are strong and prosperous, the Bright Hall is covered with dense pine and cypress trees; if the lines are Wu or Chen, there are bamboo groves; if the lines are Si or Wei, there are fragrant cassia trees. In the Qian Palace, if the Wu line is strong and prosperous, there are stone horses in the Bright Hall; if the Yin line is strong and prosperous, there are stone tigers; if there is also the 'Nobleman' and 'Wealth God', there are stone statues of officials. In the Dui Palace, if the Wei line is strong and prosperous, there are stone sheep. If the metal line has the 'White Tiger' and the Parents line and is strong and prosperous, there are stone tablets; if the metal line transforms into another metal line and is strong and prosperous, there are ornamental stone pillars. If the responding line and the earth line both appear again, it indicates that the Bright Hall is securely enclosed on both sides.

Fengying Divination · Fifteenth Dragon and Tiger

The left and right ridges are governed by the 'Azure Dragon' and 'White Tiger' lines as the useful gods. When these are prosperous and strong, the ridges are tall and prominent; when they are in a state of captivity or death, they are short and distant. If they fall into emptiness, there is a deficiency and depression in the center. If they are activated, there is a path beyond the ridges leading far away. If they are in a state of absolute decline, there are no such ridges at all. When encountering the 'Wealth' and 'Children' lines, which are auspicious deities, the ridges are neat, round, and elegant. When encountering the 'Siblings' and 'Official Ghost' lines along with evil influences, the ridges are crooked and lack direction. The 'Azure Dragon' located in the寅, 卯, or 辰 positions indicates a true dragon ridge, while the 'White Tiger' located in the 未, 申, or 酉 positions indicates a correct tiger ridge. When the 'Azure Dragon' is in the 辰 or the 'White Tiger' is in the 寅, or when 'Wealth' transforms into 'Wealth' or 'Children' transforms into 'Children', or when the 'Dragon' and 'Tiger' of the day builder meet those of the month builder, it indicates multiple dragon ridges and multiple tiger ridges. A note adds that those belonging to the Yang are masculine, while those belonging to the Yin are feminine.

The dragon and tiger ridges come to generate and harmonise with the world line, indicating that the dragon and tiger ridges are formed from the same mountain, surrounding the world line affectionately. If the ridges are located before the world line, they are called "reverse dragon and tiger," and if they are located after the world line, they are called "forward dragon and tiger." When the dragon ridge is in conflict and the tiger ridge supports the world line, it indicates that the dragon ridge has moved away and the tiger ridge embraces the world line. When the tiger ridge is in conflict and the dragon ridge supports the world line, it indicates that the tiger ridge has moved away and the dragon ridge embraces the world line. When the dragon and tiger ridges harmonise with the world line, both ridges are present on either side. When the dragon and tiger ridges conflict with each other, it indicates that the two ridges are fighting. When the dragon ridge overcomes the tiger ridge, the dragon is strong and the tiger is weak; when the tiger ridge overcomes the dragon ridge, the tiger ridge crosses over the bright hall. When the dragon and tiger ridges hold the world line, both ridges tightly embrace the world line. Ridges close to the world line are near, while ridges that overcome the world line press upon the site. When the dragon and tiger ridges hold the world line and are prosperous and strong, it indicates that the surrounding mountains are high and pressing upon the site. When they are prosperous and strong and meet conflict, it indicates that the dragon and tiger ridges are looking up. When the world line overcomes the dragon and tiger ridges, the ridges scatter and flow away. When the dragon and tiger ridges are active, there are paths for people to walk on either side.

The official ghost's grave is located on the dragon and tiger lines, with burial mounds on both sides. However, the official ghost's grave falls into an empty position, indicating that the burial site has already been ruined. The wood line is combined with the dragon and tiger lines, and the hole line becomes active, with broken trees on both sides. The black tortoise line brings a metal line and a cutting blade to attack the wood line, indicating that the trees have been secretly cut down. If the dragon and tiger lines are associated with water, then the location is near water: if it is in a thriving and vigorous position, it is a flowing branch of living water; if it is in a restrained and dying position, it is a pond. If the water line is attacked or combined by the month builder and day branch, it becomes stagnant dead water; if it is supported by the metal line, even dead water can flow for a long distance. Additionally, directions can be adjusted according to the opposing forces. For example, water in the north is originally in the northern direction, but if it is opposed by the southern day, it is interpreted as a line running east-west. Other cases can be judged in a similar manner. The above is from the "Jin Nang Ji."

When the dragon and tiger lines meet the metal element, if they are prosperous and strong, the mountain will have rugged rocks; if they are weak, it will only be a small mound of earth. If they meet the water element, and with wealth and children lines that are prosperous and strong, the forest will be lush and flourishing; if they meet siblings and official ghost lines and are in a state of captivity and death, then the bamboo leaves will fall off and the forest will wither. If they meet the fire element, and are in a state of birth and prosperity, there will be houses on both sides; if they fall into death,墓,绝, or胎, there will only be empty and cold houses; if there is also an official ghost line, it indicates a temple or shrine. If the fire line is empty and moves, it indicates that the mountain has been burned; if the fire line with the azure dragon line moves, it indicates dragon sand arranged in a tail shape; if the fire line with the white tiger line moves, it indicates a grave of a family with no descendants. If the earth element is prosperous and strong, the mountain peaks will be magnificent; if it is weak, the mountain will be low and broken. If the earth line is strong and meets a beneficial element, there will be houses on both sides with smoke rising from cooking fires; if the earth line is weak and meets an official ghost line, it is not an ancient tomb, but certainly a deserted temple.

The "Guan Gong Kuejie" says: When two wood wands are in the Zhen palace, it indicates the Azure Dragon turning around with affection; when two metal wands are in the Dui palace, it indicates the White Tiger raising its head. When wood wands meet wood wands, the Azure Dragon is surrounded repeatedly, indicating long-lasting blessings; when wood wands meet fire wands, it indicates two Azure Dragons guarding with intent, with the outer dragon sand not turning while the inner dragon sand turns; when wood wands meet earth wands, the dragon sand stops at the east, and if this wand falls into an empty position, the eldest son's line will be cut off, but if it does not fall into an empty position, the eldest son's line will be auspicious; when wood wands meet water wands, the dragon sand is protected layer by layer, indicating that descendants will produce virtuous people with no jealousy among them; when wood wands meet metal wands, if it is in spring, it does not lead to extinction, but if it is in autumn, it indicates extinction—note: the above passage discusses Azure Dragon sand. When metal wands meet metal wands, it indicates something with a beginning but no end, and the third son's line will be cut off; when metal wands meet fire wands, it indicates wealth, and descendants can hold minor official positions; when metal wands meet water wands, it indicates the sand shape is hidden while the dragon pulse is layered, leading to descendants producing virtuous people; when metal wands meet wood wands, it indicates the White Tiger hiding its head and shrinking its legs, with a break in the middle allowing wind to pass through, and one should plant pine and bamboo to remedy this; when metal wands meet earth wands, it indicates the White Tiger circling the tomb in three layers, leading to generations of outstanding talents—note: the above passage discusses White Tiger sand.

Divination on Burial Grounds: Sixteenth Section on the Back Mountains

The mountain behind a tomb is considered with the "Xuanwu" as the useful god. If Xuanwu is on a metal line, the mountain behind is round and beautiful; if on a wood line, it is tall; if on a water line, it is winding; if on a fire line, it is sharp; if on a earth line, it is square and flat. If Xuanwu falls into an empty position, the dragon coming from the mountain is cut off by people; if Xuanwu moves, there is a path behind the mountain; if Xuanwu falls into an empty position and then moves, the mountain behind is not proper; if one line above Xuanwu falls into an empty position, the back is empty and cold. If Xuanwu is on an earth line and moves, there is a pond behind; if Xuanwu is combined with a water line and falls into the Kan palace, there is water to the north, and when this line moves, the water flows away without sentiment; if Xuanwu is combined with a water line and moves to conflict with the world line, there is often hidden water invading.

Burial Ground Divination · Seventeenth Dragon Ancestor

The ancestral mountain of the dragon's coming is taken with "Gou Chen" as the useful god. When Gou Chen holds the world, the dragon's coming is certainly long and continuous, rising and falling like a living dragon. If Gou Chen falls into Zi water, the dragon shape appears as great water flowing endlessly with layered waves; if it falls into Chou earth, it resembles an angry bull breaking free from its reins, running forward while looking back; if it falls into Yin wood, it looks like a tiger walking, lifting its feet and swishing its tail; if it falls into Mao wood, it resembles a rabbit escaping from a cage, leaping and running quickly; if it falls into Chen earth, it looks like a dragon moving, winding and undulating; if it falls into Si fire, it resembles a startled snake coiling and twisting; if it falls into Wu fire, or with the addition of "Heavenly Horse" and "Post Horse," it looks like horses galloping, rushing upward against the trend.

Gou Chen falls into Wei earth, resembling a flock of sheep moving in disorder, rushing forward eagerly; falling into Shen metal, it looks like a vine pulling along, spreading continuously; falling into You metal, it resembles a startled phoenix flying, with a group of sparrows following; falling into Xu earth, it looks like infantry carrying long spears, fighting and retreating; falling into Hai water, it resembles a river winding through nine bends, meandering and affectionate. When Gou Chen meets a clash or arestrain, the dragon's energy is injured; when Gou Chen generates and harmonizes with the world line, the dragon's energy is affectionate. When Gou Chen falls into an empty position and moves, it can only be buried shallowly near a mountain. If Gou Chen is accompanied by the 'Lushen' and 'Yi Ma' and the official ghost 'Guiren', and also receives support from the 'four direct' of year, month, day, and hour, this dragon will certainly achieve great wealth; if it is accompanied by 'Wang Shen', 'Jie Sha', 'Xing Ren', and 'Da Sha', and is injured by the 'four direct', this dragon will certainly be凶. If Gou Chen is further accompanied by 'Gou Chen Sha' in the Kun palace and Gen palace, and the official ghost is activated, it indicates that there is hidden evil beneath the earth's pulse.

Fengying Divination: Eighteen Water Entrances

The water mouth uses the sixth爻 as the useful god. If the sixth爻 generates and harmonises with the world line, the water mouth is affectionate; adding 'nobleman', 'post horse', 'azure dragon', 'heavenly virtue', and wealth and children, the water mouth is locked layer by layer. If the sixth爻 harms, injures or overcomes the world line, the water mouth is unaffectionate, or the water cuts near the foot of the mound; if it comes to clash with the world line, the water is like an arrow shooting at the heart of the mound. If the day branch brings 'nobleman', 'lucky god', 'azure dragon', and 'heavenly virtue' to clash, there is a blocked island in the water mouth. If fire爻 meets water爻 and combines with 'gou chen', the water mouth is narrow as a needle. If water爻 combines with parents爻, there is a small hill floating on the water; if water爻 combines with official ghost爻, it is 'ghost guarding the city gate', withInauspicious Spirit guarding the water mouth.

The sixth line is寅 wood, and the fifth line has伏亥 water beneath it, with a bridge at the water's mouth; when the line is strong, the bridge is high, and when the line is weak, the bridge is low. A note says that寅 is the palace of people and horses, so it is taken as a bridge or road. Beneath寅 wood is子 water, and there are boats at the water's mouth. Additionally, if water is strong and wood is weak, it is a bridge; if water is weak and wood is strong, it is a boat or a pavilion by the water. When「螣蛇」 joins theChildren and moves, there is a path at the water's mouth; when「朱雀」 joins theWealth and moves, there are smoke and houses by the water. When「白虎」 joins theOfficial Ghost and moves, there is a temple at the water's mouth. The deity worshipped in the temple is determined by the five elements of theOfficial Ghost: if it is fire, it is Zhao Xuantan (the god of wealth) or the Five Blessings Temple; if it is water, it is Guanyin, San Guan, Xuantian Shangdi, or the Dragon King Temple; if it is earth, it is the Earth Grain Temple; if it is wood, it is the Eastern Mountain Emperor Temple; if it is metal, it is Guan Di, Shakyamuni, or a temple with gilded images.

The sixth line carries the 'Wang Shen', 'Jie Sha', 'Xing Ren', and 'Da Sha' which clash and control the World Line. In the future, when the mountain's fortune reaches a declining place, misfortune is certain. The 'Teng Sha' water line in the Kan palace holds the World Line and becomes active, indicating water surrounding the area. A note explains that by looking at which line the water line is active, one can determine the direction of the water. If the water line is active on the third or fourth lines, it indicates water that wraps around like a belt. If there is no water line in the entire hexagram, then the 'Xuan Wu' is used to judge: if 'Xuan Wu' is in a prosperous and strong position, the water is vast; if it falls in an empty, dead, tomb, or fetal position, the river is dry. If the water is prosperous but falls into an empty position, the water flows loosely; if it is weak and confined, the water is shallow and close; if it is in a state of stagnation and death, the water is stagnant and not flowing.

Divination on Burial Grounds: Nineteenth Section on Identifying Soil Colors

Distinguish the earth color in a site by using the World Line as the Useful God. The colors determined by the Five Phases are: earth yellow, wood green, water black, fire red, and metal white. The colors determined by the Six Spirits are: "Azure Dragon" green, "Vermilion Bird" and "Tie Sha" red, "Gou Chen" yellow, "White Tiger" white, and "Black Tortoise" black. When combined, they form mixed colors: Azure Dragon combined with earth line produces green and yellow; Vermilion Bird and Tie Sha combined with wood line produces red and green; Gou Chen combined with water line produces yellow and black; White Tiger combined with water line produces white and black — a small note says the rest follows the same pattern. When the World Line meets Six Harmony, all five colors are present; when it meets Triple Harmony, there are three colors. As for the deeper earth color, it depends on the hidden line beneath the World Line.

Forty-two distinctions in identifying objects within a grave site.

To determine what is buried in the grave, use the buried god (伏神) beneath the world line (世爻) and the buried god of the world line. If the world line holds the burial of wealth (妻财), there are treasures in the grave. If it is accompanied by metal, there are metal objects; if prosperous and strong, it is gold and silver; if weak, it is copper and iron. If it is accompanied by wood and falls in the dead or critical position, there is rotten wood beneath. If the buried wood is in conflict, harm, opposition, or controls the world line, there are tree roots invading the coffin. If it is accompanied by fire and the 'Tang Sha' (螣蛇), there are earthworms and snakes beneath. If it is accompanied by wood and the 'Bai Hu' (白虎), there are ant hills. If the 'Xuan Wu' (玄武) water is present and the world line is in the fire palace (离宫), there are turtles and crabs beneath. If the world line holds the burial of official ghost (官鬼), there are old corpses and ancient tombs beneath. If the world line holds the burial of siblings (兄弟), there are holes beneath. If the world line holds metal and is accompanied by buried metal, and the day and month are at the growth position (长生), there are stones beneath.

Divination on Burial Sites: Twenty-first, Identifying What Object Injures the Burial Site

The寅爻 carries the '劫杀' and conflicts with the hole爻, causing harm. If it is prosperous and strong, it is like a wild cat digging through the hole. If it is weak, it is like termites eating away. If it is accompanied by子, it represents a rat; if by卯, a rabbit; if by辰 or巳, a snake or earthworm; if by戌, a badger or dog; if by亥, a wild boar; if by丑 or未, cattle and sheep trampling; if by申 or酉, stone corners damaging the site.

Divination on Burial Grounds: Twenty-two Distinctions Concerning the Coffin and Casket

The World Line is associated with wealth. If the wealth is in the branches of Chen, Xu, Chou, or Wei, which are the four earthly burial branches, then a wooden coffin is used. If the wealth is in the branches of Yin, Shen, Si, or Hai, which are the four growth branches, then a stone coffin is used. If the wealth is in the branches of Zi, Wu, Mao, or You, which are the four cardinal branches, then after the body is burned, the bones are buried. If the divination does not show wealth or official ghosts, there is no coffin or outer coffin. If the official ghost harms the wealth and the wealth is empty, the coffin and outer coffin are of poor quality.

Burial Divination · Twenty-two Methods of Determining the Appropriate Burial Site

For a grave that has already been buried, observe which line the official ghost is under. If the official ghost is under a metal line or a fire line, it is suitable for cremation and burial of bones. If it is under a water line, wood line, or earth line, it is suitable for burial with a coffin. For an unburied site, examine which element the official ghost generates. If the official ghost generates metal or fire, it is suitable for cremation and burial of bones. If it generates water, wood, or earth, it is suitable for burial with a coffin and earth.

Divination on Burial Sites: Twenty-three Criteria for Determining the Number of Graves

If the World Line or the burial line carries a prosperous and strong Official Ghost, then the number of burial sites is determined by the generating numbers of the Five Phases: water corresponds to one, fire to two, wood to three, metal to four, and earth to five. If the Official Ghost is in a state of rest, reduce the number by one third; if in a state of captivity or death, reduce by half. A note explains that if the Official Ghost transforms into another Official Ghost, it is still judged in the same way. Additionally, if the World Line or burial line is occupied by the earth element, then among the year, month, day, hour, and other lines, hidden lines, and transformed lines, any that belong to water or earth elements are considered to be buried in the earth element. If there are three or four such elements, there are three or four burial sites; if there are five or six, there are five or six burial sites. If the element is yang, it is a male burial; if yin, it is a female burial. A note explains that metal is buried in the ox, wood in the sheep, and fire in the dog, and these are also judged in the same way.

Adding the 'Azure Dragon' and having it prosperous and strong indicates a new grave; adding the 'White Tiger' and having it weak and confined indicates an old burial. If it moves and meets a combination, it indicates a new grave; if it meets a conflict and falls into an empty position, it indicates an old burial. If it falls on an empty position or a dead position, it indicates a grave of a family with no descendants; if it falls on a fetal or nurturing position, it indicates a child's grave. If the World Line and the Official Ghost share the same tomb, it indicates relatives buried together; if the Response Line and the Official Ghost share the same tomb, it indicates people from another family buried together.
