"Negative Accumulation" affects two months and one position: in the first and second months at亥, third and fourth at丑, fifth and sixth at卯, seventh and eighth at巳, ninth and tenth at未, eleventh and twelfth at酉, indicating a failure to properly worship spirits and gods, leading to misfortune, and it is most unfavorable when it demands forcefully and persistently."Heavenly Pig" moves in reverse: in the first month at亥, moving back one position each month, ending at子 in the twelfth month, indicating pigs suffering from strange illnesses."Heavenly Ox" shares the same position as the earth thief, indicating illness and loss in cattle."Lonely Spirit" shares the same position as life qi."Heavenly Mute" follows the order of申, 酉, 辰, 未, 亥, 卯, 寅, 巳, 戌, 丑, 子, 午, and it is most unfavorable when it shares the same line as official ghost."Cloud Deaf" shares the same position as the white tiger above the month.

At the beginning of the volume, the same useful god and ominous stars are used for years, months, days and hours.

Among the deities listed above, sixteen are calculated in the same way for the year, month, and day: "Sun," "Moon," "Heavenly Kill," "Earthly Kill," "Five Ghosts," "Official Symbol," "Disease Symbol," "Post Horse," "Salty Pool," "Heavenly Dog," "Two Losses" (Great Loss and Minor Loss), "Funeral Gate," "Guest," "Heavenly Cry," "Lost Spirit," and "劫杀." When interpreting the divination, regardless of whether they appear in the flowing year, month builder, or day branch, they are looked up according to the same position. The difference lies only in the proximity and weight of their influence: those in the sovereign year affect matters of one year, those in the month builder affect matters of one month, and those in the day branch affect matters of the day.

At the beginning of the volume, the method of starting from the day is explained.

The following are determined based on the day stem on the day of divination. "Heavenly Pardon": Jia day corresponds to Mao, Yi day to Hai, Bing day to You, Ding day to Wei, Wu day to Si, Ji day to Mao, Geng day to Hai, Xin day to You, Ren day to Wei, Gui day to Si, indicating no worries in all affairs. "Day Resolution": Jia day corresponds to Si, Yi day to Shen, Bing day to Yin, Ding day to Chou, Wu day to You, Ji day to Si, Geng day to Shen, Xin day to Yin, Ren day to Chou, Gui day to You, indicating resolution of disputes and peace in all matters. "Internal Resolution": when two day stems are in the same position, Jia and Yi days correspond to Si, Bing and Ding days to Shen, Wu and Ji days to Yin, Geng and Xin days to You, Ren and Gui days to Mao, indicating resolution of disputes and recovery from illness. "Drunk Dispersal": Jia day corresponds to Yin, Yi day to Shen, Bing day to Si, Ding day to Hai, Wu day to Si, Ji day to Yin, Geng day to Shen, Xin day to Si, Ren day to Hai, Gui day to Si, indicating dispersion of public and private matters, but it is inauspicious for marriage. "Great Kill Below the Day": when two day stems are in the same position, Jia and Yi days correspond to Hai, Bing and Ding days to Wei, Wu and Ji days to Xu, Geng and Xin days to Yin, Ren and Gui days to Si, indicating misfortune for the family and inauspiciousness for all matters. "Gate of Burial Open Kill": determined by the Five Phases, Jia and Yi days belong to Metal, Bing and Ding days to Water, Wu and Ji days to Wood, Geng and Xin days to Fire, Ren and Gui days to Earth, indicating illness, death, and loss of wealth. "Earth Step": Jia and Yi days correspond to Wu, Bing and Ding days to You, Wu day to Mao, Ji day to Si, Geng and Xin days to Yin, Ren day to Si, Gui day to Xu, most inauspicious when combined with Lone God and Red Alarm. "Month Blind": Jia and Yi days correspond to Shen, Bing and Ding days to Wei, Wu and Ji days to Yin, Geng and Xin days to Wu, Ren and Gui days to Chen. "Fire Country": Jia day corresponds to Zi, Yi day to Hai, Bing day to Mao, Ding day to Wei, Wu day to Yin, Ji day to Mao, Geng day to Wu, Xin day to Si, Ren day to Chou, Gui day to Wei. "Red Beauty": Jia day corresponds to Wu, Yi day to Shen, Bing day to Yin, Ding day to Wei, Wu and Ji days to Chen, Geng day to Xu, Xin day to You, Ren day to Zi, Gui day to Shen, if combined with Post Horse in the same line, indicating extreme licentiousness. In general, if multiple auspicious or inauspicious factors overlap on the same line and have strength, as long as they are not in the旬空, the effects of fortune and misfortune will be significant; if only one factor is present, the effects will be minor; if there is no strength and it falls in the empty position, the effects will not be realized.

At the beginning, the White Tiger appears in the current time, with the Advancing God and the Retreating God.

First, let's take an example of determining the 'White Tiger' according to the hour: in the first hour (Zi), the White Tiger is in Yin; in the second hour (Chou), it is in Chen; in the third hour (Yin), it is in Wu; in the fourth hour (Mao), it is in Shen; in the fifth hour (Chen), it is in Xu; in the sixth hour (Si), it is in Zi; in the seventh hour (Wu), it returns to Yin; in the eighth hour (Wei), it is in Chen; in the ninth hour (Shen), it is in Wu; in the tenth hour (You), it is in Shen; in the eleventh hour (Xu), it is in Xu; in the twelfth hour (Hai), it is in Zi. This shows that the White Tiger moves forward by one position each hour, completing a cycle every six hours. If the Useful God falls exactly on this position, then the White Tiger's symbolic meaning is used to discuss matters related to bloodshed and mourning. Now, regarding the Advancing and Retreating Gods. Jiazi and Jiawu are the Yang Advancing Gods, while Jimao and Jiyou are the Yin Advancing Gods (the original text uses 'Si' instead of 'Ji'). Additionally, any instance where the Earthly Branch moves from the previous position to the next, such as Hai to Zi, Chou to Chen, Yin to Mao, Si to Wu, Wei to Xu, and Shen to You, are considered Advancing Gods. When encountering an Advancing God, good events become more prosperous, and bad events increase, as it intensifies the original nature. Renchen and Renxu are the Yang Retreating Gods, while Dingchou and Dingwei are the Yin Retreating Gods. Additionally, any instance where the Earthly Branch moves from the next position back to the previous one, such as Zi to Hai, Chen to Chou, Mao to Yin, Wu to Si, Xu to Wei, and You to Shen, are considered Retreating Gods. When encountering a Retreating God, bad events decrease, and good events also diminish.

At the beginning of the volume, there is a song about the Supreme Year.

The Supreme Sovereign is the most esteemed among all deities. If it comes to generate and support the World Line and the Hexagram Body, all kinds of evils will not be able to invade. However, if it instead clashes and controls the Hexagram Body and the World Line, misfortunes will follow continuously and be difficult to resist. If the Supreme Sovereign falls on a Yang line and holds both the World Line and the Responding Line, and at the same time carries auspicious malevolent forces such as the Heavenly Ethical Nobleman, and is associated with the Official Ghost line, along with proper爻position and encountering generation and prosperity, it indicates high rank and salary, even making ghosts and gods respectful. If the Supreme Sovereign brings the energy of Officialdom to hold the World Line or the Hexagram Body, officials will experience promotion and advancement in their careers. However, if common people have their Hexagram Body and World Line being clashed and controlled by the Supreme Sovereign, they may face troubles such as imprisonment, lawsuits, exile, or corporal punishment.

When the Tai Su (Year God) is on the Brothers' hexagram and holds the world and the body, it indicates that both wealth and wife will be obtained, and in legal disputes the outcome will be favorable; but if it is reversed and clashes, one will suffer from thieves, lose property, suffer financial loss, and even risk the wife's life. When the Tai Su is on the Parents' hexagram and holds the body and the world, all business endeavors and actions will be satisfactory; but if it is clashed with, it will harm young children, livestock, crops, and sericulture. When the Tai Su is on the Children's hexagram and holds the body and the world, it indicates that descendants will flourish, wealth will be beneficial, the government will not interfere, and diseases and calamities will be eliminated; however, there will be difficulties in achieving official status and things will not go as desired. When the Tai Su is on the Wealth hexagram and holds the body and the world, one will be as wealthy as Tao Zhu Gong, with ample grain stores, and can attain official honor through the wife; however, the Wealth hexagram will clash with the Parents' hexagram, causing harm to one's parents.

The above passage is from the Zhang Liang divination method passed down by the Tang dynasty monk Yixing. The book states: The Sovereign Star is as noble and esteemed as the emperor. When divining one's destiny, it governs one's prosperity and decline throughout life; when divining the current year, it determines the fortune and misfortune of the year. If the Sovereign Star is combined with auspicious deities such as the Nobleman, Post Horse, Monthly Virtue, Heavenly Joy, Six Harmony, Fortune Virtue,禄神, Azure Dragon, Heavenly Joy, and Life Qi, and the rising line falls on yang lines such as the official star and seal line, and these lines are prosperous and strong in their positions, then it indicates great wealth and honor, with no loss throughout life. The reputation, virtue, and fame are widely recognized, and even ghosts and evil spirits dare not interfere. In such a case, one is not afraid of the day branch being empty or the month builder and day branch experiencing punishment and clash. Even if it is seated on the four ominous positions of death, tomb, extinction, and embryo, no misfortune will occur.

If the divination shows a favorable omen, those in official positions will have a stable and prosperous year, while common people will experience smooth circumstances. Conversely, if the Tai Su is combined with hostile gods, siblings, official ghosts, tianhuo, white tiger, wangshen, jie sha, maotou, tianhuo, tiansha, and death qi, and these malevolent forces fall on the descending line, and are further afflicted by punishment, sheep's horn, destruction, harm, or emptiness, then misfortunes will follow one after another, leading to lifelong failure. If this is for a year of divination, it indicates loss of people, financial loss, continuous calamities, and an entire year of unrest.

Volume Opening · Heavenly Middle Evil Star

The "Heavenly Harm" is the same as the旬空. The sixty Jiazi are divided into six periods, each period consisting of ten days that correspond to ten earthly branches. The remaining two branches have no heavenly stem to pair with, and these two branches are considered the empty ones for that period. In the Jiazi period, counting from Jiazi to Guiyou, the remaining branches are Xu and Hai, so Xu and Hai are the empty ones for this period. In the Jiaxu period, counting to Guiwei, the remaining branches are Shen and You, so Shen and You are the empty ones. In the Jiashen period, counting to Guisi, the remaining branches are Wu and Wei, so Wu and Wei are the empty ones. In the Jiawu period, counting to Guimao, the remaining branches are Chen and Si, so Chen and Si are the empty ones. In the Jiachen period, counting to Guichou, the remaining branches are Yin and Mao, so Yin and Mao are the empty ones. In the Jiayin period, counting to Guihai, the remaining branches are Zi and Chou, so Zi and Chou are the empty ones. When divining a hexagram, first determine which period the current day belongs to, and then identify which two branches are empty in the hexagram.

At the beginning of the volume, there is a section on distinguishing the sharp star.

The term "blade star" refers to the劫财 in命理. For example, for Jia wood, the卯 is considered the blade, because the卯 contains Yi wood, which is the劫财 of Jia wood, and since Yi wood can take away Jia wood's wealth, it is called "Yang blade." For Yi wood, the寅 is considered the blade, because the寅 contains Jia wood, which can take away Yi wood's wealth, so it is called "Yin blade." Similarly, Bing fire takes the午 as its blade, because the午 contains Ding fire; Ding fire takes the巳 as its blade, because the巳 contains Bing fire; Wu earth takes the午 as its blade, because the午 contains Ji earth; Ji earth takes the巳 as its blade, because the巳 contains Wu earth; Geng metal takes the酉 as its blade, because the酉 contains Xin metal; Xin metal takes the申 as its blade, because the申 contains Geng metal; Ren water takes the子 as its blade, because the子 contains Gui water; and Gui water takes the亥 as its blade, because the亥 contains Ren water. All these are cases of劫财. Therefore, Yang heavenly stems meet Yang blades, and Yin heavenly stems meet Yin blades. Nowadays, people do not understand the principle that Yin and Yang each have their own life and death, and mistakenly write it as "Yang blade." They also claim that Yin heavenly stems do not have blades, and wrongly take the position before the禄 as a substitute, which is why the blade star does not work. They do not realize that if following that method, Yi wood would take the辰 as its blade, but the辰 contains Yi wood itself, and Yi wood meeting Yi wood is like and harmonious, how can it take away its own wealth?

At the beginning of the volume, there is an appendix distinguishing between the concepts of "Gu" and "Ma De".

Heavenly Virtue Nobleman is the master of all divine influences, and it holds the most important and esteemed position. If it is accompanied by Post Horse, its status surpasses that of peers; if it is supported by Monthly Virtue and Celestial Virtue, its fame spreads throughout the land; if it shares the same line with Official Ghost, it can hold a position of prime ministerial rank; if it is exactly at the year's ruler, it holds great power over a region. Heavenly Virtue Nobleman in the Qian trigram is called "Golden Palace"; in the亥 line, it is called "Ascending the Heavenly Gate"; in the丑 or未 lines, it is called "Entering the Palace," which is especially remarkable. In the Renshen line, it is called "Jade Hall," indicating a position in the Hanlin Academy, a prestigious and honorable office, with great fame. In the Renxu line, it is called "Descending into the Palace," which although its fortune is not as great as Jade Hall, still indicates a high status, a love for learning, and a refined, knowledgeable character. In the Kun trigram, it is called "Yellow Palace," indicating a person born with extremely high virtue.

Only those falling in the Xun hexagram are called 'Di Ji' (Earth's Limit), those falling in the Xin Mao line are called 'Li De' (Encouraging Virtue) or 'She Nan' (Facing Difficulty), and those falling in the Xin Si line are called 'Sheng Hua' (Rising Transformation). These three positions will diminish the nobleman's auspiciousness. If the Tianyi Nobleman passes through all six lines, and the World Line is prosperous and strong in its position without being harmed or broken, this is an extraordinary fortune allowing a scholar-official to hold high office in the central government and a military general to defend the borders.

The "Four Directs" of the Heavenly Stems and Earthly Branches include the year, month, day, and hour. The power of the Nobleman (贵人) on these four positions decreases in order: the year is stronger than the month, the month is stronger than the day, and the day is stronger than the hour. The use of day and night Nobleman depends on the time of day: if the World Line (世爻) is in the branches of卯, 辰, 巳, 午, 未, or 申, then the day Nobleman is used; if it is in 酉, 戌, 亥, 子, 丑, or 寅, then the night Nobleman is used. The rules for determining day and night Nobleman are as follows: for the Heavenly Stems 甲, 戊, and 庚, 丑 is the day Nobleman and 未 is the night Nobleman; for 乙 and 己, 子 is the day Nobleman and 申 is the night Nobleman; for 丙 and 丁, 亥 is the day Nobleman and 酉 is the night Nobleman; for 壬 and 癸, 巳 is the day Nobleman and 卯 is the night Nobleman; for 辛, 午 is the day Nobleman and 寅 is the night Nobleman. Yang Nobleman is suitable for daytime, especially after the winter solstice; Yin Nobleman is suitable for nighttime, especially after the summer solstice.

The post horse is determined by the earthly branches of the heavenly stem, the month builder, the day branch, and the hour. If the post horse from these four sources converges on the same line, the fortune is extraordinary. If it also coincides with the official ghost and the nobleman on the same line, then the person will hold high office and achieve great wealth and status. However, the post horse must also be distinguished: the horses of寅 and申 are yang, representing male horses, which are strong and fast. The horses of巳 and亥 are yin, representing female horses, which are weak and not fast. Furthermore, horses belong to the fire element. Fire is born in寅, and reaches its official position in巳, so the horses of寅 and巳 bring the most fortune. 申 is the sickly place for fire, and亥 is the terminal place for fire, so the horses of申 and亥 bring only half the blessing.

The post horse should be located after the world line, not before. If the world line is behind and chasing the horse, it indicates a life of constant toil and travel; if the horse is behind and chasing the world line, then one can enjoy prosperity and honor. If the post horse falls on a prosperous and strong official ghost爻, then one will excel in official positions. If the post horse falls in a declining position, commoners and scholars will all face financial difficulties. If the post horse falls in an empty and lost position, then one will be confined to the marketplace. Additionally, if in the year of Shen the post horse is in the position of Yin, it is the sovereign's punishment on the post horse; if in the year of Yin the post horse is in the position of Shen, it is the post horse punishing the sovereign. If the post horse is on the world line and is accompanied by the official ghost, and also suffers from the conflict, damage, or punishment of the sovereign's year, the month builder, and the day branch, and also harms its own palace, then although this person may be prominent and receive generous salaries, once they reach the limit爻 and encounter punishment, harm, destruction, or conflict, or fall in the years of death, decline, burial, or infancy, they will certainly suffer punishment and death, or die from poisoning.

There are four types of De Shen: Heavenly Virtue, Monthly Virtue, Heavenly Stem Virtue, and Earthly Branch Virtue. A single De Shen can dispel all evils and resolve all worries, granting whatever is desired and making whatever is thought of come true. If De falls on a Yang line, it indicates honor and prominence; if De falls on a Yin line, it indicates diligence, frugality, respect, and propriety. When De is combined with auspicious malevolent forces such as Tianyi Guiren, it signifies wealth, honor, health, and peace. However, if the power of 'Ni Xing' overcomes De, death is inevitable. For example, if a divination is made in the year, month, and day of Jiayin, and the world line is seated on Ji wood (the original text says 'Si'), Ji and Ji are in harmony, and the Heavenly Stem Virtue of寅 is in Wei, this is called 'De He Xiang Jian'. Similarly, if a divination is made in the year, month, and day of Gengshen, and the world line is in Yichou, it is the same pattern. Another example is when a divination is made on Yichou day with the world line in Gengshen, or on Jiwei day with the world line in Jiayin; these are called 'Yang De'. These patterns especially bring joy and celebration. If they are further supported by the heavenly stem, monthly stem, day branch, and hour, without committing offenses such as crime, destruction, or falling into emptiness, then all five blessings are complete and a hundred kinds of good fortune gather together.

The next level of pattern is: the three transmissions are located at Bingchen, with the world line at Xinyou. The branch virtue of Chen is in You, and Bing combines with Xin. This is called "virtue and virtue supporting each other." Similarly, if the three transmissions are at Renxu, and the world line is at Dingmao, the branch virtue of Xu is in Mao, and Ding combines with Ren, which is also called "virtue and virtue supporting each other." However, the lines at Mao and You do not have heavenly virtue attached, so they are called "solitary virtue." The lines at Chen and Xu do not have nobleman or post horse attached, so they are called "weak virtue." Moreover, the lines at Chen and You form "hidden punishment." Even if they meet virtue, it is only punishment combined with virtue. Therefore, the four lines at Chen, Xu, Mao, and You, even if they meet annual virtue, monthly virtue, and day virtue, cannot bring great fortune: although they may have official rank, they cannot achieve prominence; once they are further harmed by punishment, they become calamity.

Now consider the four lines: Zi, Wu, Si, and Hai. These lines contain both凶 and 德 mixed together. The lines Wu and Hai form a hidden punishment (匿刑). Only when the卦 is cast on the year, month, and day of Bingwu and the World Line is seated on Xinhai, with the combination of Jia and Xin, and the branch 德 of Wu is also in Hai, can there be fortune. Similarly, if the卦 is cast on the year, month, and day of Xinchou and the World Line is seated on Bingwu, the situation is the same. However, even in such cases, one can only rely on a nobleman to seek official position. Once there is punishment, harm, control, or destruction, it becomes stagnant and difficult to advance. As for the lines Zi and Si, only when the卦 is cast on the year, month, and day of Renzi and the World Line is seated on Dingsi, with the combination of Ren and Ding, and the nobleman is exactly in Si, and the branch 德 of Zi is in Ji, can there be fortune. Similarly, if the卦 is cast on the year, month, and day of Jisi and the World Line is seated on Jiazi, the situation is the same. These two cases are called "nobleman supports 德 and combines," and they do not suffer from hidden punishment. If these lines fall on a yang line, with proper position and strong wealth, they will surely bring long-lasting blessings. In general, if 德 is already involved in hidden punishment, it still cannot bring fortune, let alone those that have punishment but no 德. Additionally, when encountering 德 within mutual control, the misfortune is lighter. For example, Mao controls Xu, Zi controls Si, Yin controls Wei, Shen controls Mao, Hai controls Wu, You controls Yin, and Chen controls Hai.

When discussing harmony, the Six Harmony is the most important, and the Triple Harmony comes next. If another trigram comes to harmonize with me, it is considered favorable and supportive, leading to quick results. However, if the harmonizing trigram also meets a conflicting one, the harmony will be broken. If the movement involves harmony, the matter will be delayed. Harmony should also be distinguished: for example, if卯 (Mao) harmonizes with戌 (Xu), or子 (Zi) harmonizes with丑 (Chou), then卯 wood controls戌 earth and子 water controls丑 earth; harmony with control is only half bad. Conversely, if戌 harmonizes with卯 or丑 harmonizes with子, then I am overpowering the other, which is considered favorable. If辰 (Chen) harmonizes with酉 (You), or午 (Wu) harmonizes with未 (Wei), or亥 (Hai) harmonizes with寅 (Yin), then I am generating the other, and the other harmonizes with me; harmony with generation is definitely beneficial. However, if未 harmonizes with午,寅 harmonizes with亥, or酉 harmonizes with辰, even though it is harmony, it is still considered to be leaking my energy, so it is only half favorable.

From the moment of the snake (Si) combining with the monkey (Shen), although Si belongs to fire, metal's growth is in Si, so it cannot be said to overcome metal; it is only when the tiger (Yin) line is activated, and the three characters Si, Yin, and Shen come together, forming the three punishments, that the combination is completely destroyed, and the evil is extremely severe. Conversely, if the monkey (Shen) combines with the snake (Si), the punishment includes a beneficial aspect, which can be considered half good. There are also other variations: some combinations are broken because the changing line causes punishment and clash; some originally have no combination, but a combination is formed through the changing line; and there is also the case where both the heavenly stem and earthly branch combine, called 'heaven and earth harmonizing', in which case even if the line is injured, it is not harmed.

Triple Harmony takes the middle character as the main one. The first character is the position of Growth, which signifies the beginning and initiation. The last character is the position of Storage, which signifies the gathering and containment. Only when all three characters are present is it considered true Triple Harmony. Take the example of the Metal Triple Harmony of Si, You, and Chou. You is the main general: if only Si and You are present but Chou is missing, although a formation is made, the storage is missing, leading to incomplete matters with a beginning but no end. If only You and Chou are present but Si is missing, although a metal formation is made, the root is missing, leading to difficulties at the beginning but ease later. If only Si and Chou are present but You is missing, the main general is absent, so the metal formation is not established at all, and the formation cannot be completed. The same principle applies to the Fire Triple Harmony of Yin, Wu, and Xu, the Wood Triple Harmony of Hai, Mao, and Wei, and the Water Triple Harmony of Shen, Zi, and Chen. In addition,刑 (刑) and煞 (sah) should not be combined with Triple Harmony, because刑 and煞 are already凶 (feng, ominous), and if they are combined with Triple Harmony and cannot be released, they become even more ominous.

At the beginning of the volume, there is a discussion on the concept of punishment and harm.

Heavenly energy rising and developing is called "De," while earthly energy descending and causing destruction is called "Xing." Therefore, Xing represents killing energy and calamity. If Xing combines withInauspicious Spirit (evil spirits), it will certainly indicate danger, death, or early demise. If Xing falls on a Yin line, the person is cunning, greedy, and cruel; if it falls on a Yang line, the person is fierce, violent, and domineering. There are three types of Xing: Yin xing Si, Si xing Shen, which is called "Bu Xun Xing" (Punishment of Disrespect); Chou xing Xu, Xu xing Wei, which is called "Shi Shi Xing" (Punishment of Overbearing Power); Zi xing Mao, Mao xing Zi, which is called "Wu Li Xing" (Punishment of Impropriety). The branches Chen, Wu, You, and Hai are called "Zi Xing" (Self-Punishment). If the World Line carries Xing, and it can be countered by the Month Builder, Day Branch, and the Moving and Changing Lines with prosperous and strong Children blessings, it may turn from bad to good. However, the self-punishing branches Chen, Wu, You, and Hai are called "Ni Xing" (Hidden Punishment), and even with noblemen or auspicious and inauspicious stars, they cannot be resolved.

Now discussing the six harms. When the Earthly Branch 未 (Wei) harms the Water of 子 (Zi), it is because both are in their official positions and are competing for dominance, thus causing mutual harm. When the Wood of 卯 (Mao) harms the Earth of 辰 (Chen), it is because the Wood is strong and the Earth is weak, thus causing harm by the strong to the weak. When 戌 (Xu), the tomb of Fire, harms the Metal of 酉 (You), it is called "ghostly harm." Whenever the World Line is harmed, it should be judged according to its category. Now discussing the breaking by conflict: the harm caused by the year branch is greater than that caused by the month branch, the harm caused by the month branch is greater than that caused by the day branch, and the harm caused by the day branch is greater than that caused by the hour branch. When a line is broken, even if another line comes to support it, it cannot withstand the harm, and it is most likely to bring misfortune. Additionally, when a static line meets a conflict, it is considered as activated; when a moving line meets a conflict, it is considered as broken. A prosperous and strong line encountering a conflict becomes more active, while a weak and confined line encountering a conflict becomes scattered. The annotations in The Golden Strategies further state: for example, if a divination is made on a day of 子 (Zi), the 子 (Zi) originally conflicts with 午 (Wu), but if there are two 午 (Wu) lines in the hexagram, the conflict cannot occur. Similarly, if there are two 丑 (Chou), the 子 (Zi) cannot form a harmonious relationship; if there are two 卯 (Mao), the 子 (Zi) cannot be in a criminal relationship; if there are two 巳 (Si), the 子 (Zi) cannot overcome it; if there are two 子 (Zi), the day branch does not count. Other cases should be judged in the same way.

Now let us discuss the concept of empty (空亡). When an evil spirit falls into an empty position, it is called 'Heavenly Pardon', which is a good thing; when a good spirit falls into an empty position, it is called 'Heavenly Waste', which is a bad thing. Once a spirit falls into an empty position, the benevolent spirits cannot bring good fortune, and the evil spirits cannot cause death. If the World Line falls into an empty position, it only indicates that matters are delayed and the mind is unsettled. If the Six Relations fall into an empty position, then if they are prosperous and strong, the misfortune is light; if they are weak and confined, the misfortune is heavy. The following are cases of true empty positions: the metal element in February, the wood element in August, and the fire element in the month of Zi. There are also other old sayings: if a prosperous and strong element falls into an empty position, it can still be used after this ten-day period; the Hidden God is not affected by empty positions; if an empty element is confronted by another element, it becomes real. Only the element broken by the month can never be saved. There is another rule: if an empty element produces another element through change, it is not considered empty.

The *Guan Shi Wu Xing Mi Yao* says: When the earth element is empty, it is called "earth陷mountain collapse," indicating retreat and failure; if the fire element is activated in the same trigram, fire generates earth, thus filling the gap and repairing the depression; if the metal element is activated, it is like a precious mountain shining, indicating achievement of fame and fortune, and gaining benefits. When the wood element is empty, it is called "dry branches and fallen leaves"; if the metal element is activated, it is like axes cutting and shaping the wood into material; if the fire element is activated, it is like burning into ashes; if the water element is activated, it is like a wooden raft floating with the waves, inevitably leading to disaster from drifting. When the water element is empty, it is called "Yangtze River flowing away," indicating retreat and complete loss; if the metal element is activated, metal generates water, leading to flood disasters, indicating unexpected calamities. When the metal element is empty, it is called "rotten iron and rusted axe"; if the fire element is activated, it is like melting and forging into tools, indicating success in fame and fortune. When the fire element is empty, it is called "fire in the center is empty," although the flame is small, its brightness is great, thus indicating prosperity.

At the beginning, there is a section explaining the use of coins instead of yarrow stalks.

Take three copper coins, and first熏 them over the incense burner. Then, with reverence, pray: Although Heaven does not speak, it responds to inquiry; the sages of past generations are present, and one feeling connects with them. I, a person of the surname ×××, sincerely have something on my mind, uncertain and doubtful, unable to decide for myself whether it is auspicious or inauspicious, whether I will gain or lose. I rely entirely on this divination to seek the wisdom of the sages, and I beg for their compassion to clearly show the consequences. (In the incantation, ××× is substituted for the name of the person seeking divination.) After the prayer, toss the coins: one with the back side up is called 'single', draw a long horizontal line, which represents the young yang; two with the back side up is called 'split', draw two short horizontal lines, which represents the young yin; three with the back side up is called 'heavy', draw a circle, which represents the old yang; and three with the front side up is called 'cross', draw a diagonal line, which represents the old yin. Draw from the bottom up, tossing three times to form the inner trigram. Then pray again: The inner and outer images of my palace are still not clear in terms of auspiciousness or inauspiciousness; I now seek the outer trigram three lines, to form a complete six-line hexagram, so that I may resolve my doubts and worries. After the same prayer, toss three times again, combining to form a complete six-line hexagram.

At the beginning, the principles of the hexagrams and destiny are explained.

The rule for determining the 'Life Line' (命爻) is as follows: if the World Line takes the Earthly Branch of卯 or酉, then the Life Line is in the First Line; if it takes辰 or未, the Life Line is in the Second Line; if it takes巳 or午, the Life Line is in the Third Line; if it takes子 or卯, the Life Line is in the Fourth Line; if it takes丑 or戌, the Life Line is in the Fifth Line; if it takes寅 or申, the Life Line is in the Sixth Line. If one's fortune is currently in the period corresponding to the Life Line, and the Life Line is in an empty state or occupies a dead,绝, or dying position, then out of ten people, hardly one or two will escape. This rule is especially important when predicting illness and must not be overlooked.

At the beginning, the substitute for the yarrow stalks and the method of making the pills are discussed.

Jiao Yanshou said: Nowadays people use copper coins instead of the yarrow stalks because they are hard to obtain. Although this method is convenient, the copper coins are not of the same kind as the yarrow stalks. If one is to find a substitute for the yarrow stalks, the "Taiji pill" is perhaps the closest. Using the numbers of yin and yang and old and young to examine it, they fit perfectly; using the changes of forming lines and trigrams to verify it, they also match exactly. The pill has two stars on one side and three on another, two plus three equals five, which is the number of the Five Phases. One pill has six sides with a total of fifteen stars, which corresponds exactly to the fifteen in the Central Palace of the Yellow River Chart and the fifteen in the sum of the rows and columns of the Luo Writing. The shape of the pill matches the Six Harmony, and its principle includes the three elements of heaven, earth, and humanity. Thus, the wooden pill is very similar to the yarrow stalks, and it is indeed of the same kind; how can the convenience of copper coins be compared?

This is a method left by Jiao Yanshou of the Han dynasty. Cheng Yi, Zhu Xi, and Shao Yong of the Song dynasty all followed it, and it is detailed in the "Collected Works of the Three Confucian Scholars on Rational Numbers." The method involves using a piece of jujube wood that has been struck by lightning; if such wood is not available, incense wood or jade and ivory may be used instead. Three perfectly round balls are made, and they must be able to roll continuously on a plate. Each side must be ground evenly and smoothly, resembling a die but with smaller faces. The purpose is to allow easy rolling and turning. Each face is carved with three stars, and the opposite face is carved with two stars. Out of the six faces, three are carved with three stars and three with two stars, totaling fifteen stars. All three balls are made in this manner.

The beginning·Divination Precepts

There are several rules for divination. First, one should not divinate for someone with a dark and confused moral character—before divining, one must fast, purify the mind, rinse the mouth, and take a bath in order to connect with the divine; if these are not done, the response will be difficult to obtain. Second, any day can be used for divination—as long as the intention is sincere, it will surely be fulfilled, without needing to be restricted by the old sayings such as 'no divination on the day of Zi' or 'no divination on the days of the Six Wu'. This point will be explained in detail later. Third, one should not divinate if there is disrespect or irreverence—after divining, the fortune and misfortune are determined solely by the yao images, and one must not rely on personal feelings. If one suspects misfortune in a favorable situation or insists on good fortune in an unfavorable one, and keeps re-divining, this is a violation of the reverence for the sages.

Fourth, those who ask many trivial questions are not divined—each person is only allowed to ask one or two things. The Book of Poetry, Xiao Ya, Xiao Min, says: My turtle shell is already tired, and will no longer tell me good or bad fortune. The Hexagram Meng of the Book of Changes states: To ask repeatedly is a desecration; if you desecrate, I will not tell you. Fifth, those with evil intentions are not divined—the wise ancestors have spirits that only assist the upright, and will never favor the wicked. Sixth, those who are impetuous in temperament are not divined—divination is meant to carefully examine good and bad fortune, so as to seek to avoid misfortune and pursue good fortune; after divining, one must step by step investigate, and directly judge from the lines of the hexagram, the principles must be explored to their subtle depths, how can it be explained in a few words?

The Hidden Changes, Volume One

This volume was compiled by Yuannanzi Cao Jiuxi, a native of Guangdong (Eastern Yue), with his son, the Hermit of Hengqin, Cao Xuan, providing further elaboration and interpretation. The structure of the entire book follows this pattern: the main entries were compiled by Cao Jiuxi based on previous sources, while the minor annotations and explanations of divination practices were contributed by Cao Xuan.

Volume One · Divination on the Body and Life

Younanzi said: When divining one's fate, there are three key points to consider: the world line, the body line (which is determined by the month's hexagram body), and the native's line. First, examine the native's line. For example, if someone was born in the year Jiazi, their native belongs to the branch Zi, so the Zi line in the hexagram is considered the native's line. It is most favorable if this line appears in the hexagram. If the native's line is in harmony or mutual generation with the world line and the body line, it indicates stability and security in food, clothing, and salary. If the world line, body line, and native's line are supported by the禄神,驿马,月德, and天乙贵人, then prosperity and success are expected. If the world line carries妻财,禄神,青龙, and天喜, then there is joy from owning land and property. Conversely, if the禄神 is empty, the财爻 is absent, and the太岁,月建, and日辰 punish or clash with the world line, body line, and native's line, then there will be insufficient food and clothing, and the person's fate is marked by hardship and toil.

If the world line, body line, and life line are occupied by the official ghost and also accompanied by the 'broken' evil spirit, this person is certainly missing some parts of their appearance; if further combined with劫杀, sheep blade, heavenly punishment, and great sha, they are certainly suffering from illness. If the official ghost is hidden beneath the third line and is generated from the third line, or if the official ghost is activated to punish, clash, and control the third line, the situation is the same. Detailed distinctions will be explained later. If the current year's heavenly stem, the major limit, and the minor limit generate and harmonize with the body, world, and life lines, it is auspicious; if they punish, clash, and control them, it is inauspicious. The heavenly stem, month builder, day branch, and hour stem at the time of the divination, if they generate and harmonize with the body, world, and life lines, are auspicious; if they punish, clash, and control them, they are inauspicious. (Original note: Guan Lu's诀 says that heavenly stems and earthly branches are considered together.)

The World Line, the Hexagram Body, and the Life Line lines, if they conceal Wealth or Children, or produce Wealth or Children through transformation, are auspicious. If they conceal Siblings or Official Ghosts, or produce Siblings or Official Ghosts through transformation, the family's fortune will be like ice melting away. If they conceal Parents or transform into Parents, then the source of wealth comes and goes, requiring great effort and causing worry. If the Wasting God and the Storage are together, there will be sorrow and hardship in the present. If the World Line is buried along with the Official Ghosts, it is called "following the Official into burial," indicating continuous misfortune. If a line in the hexagram goes to support and assist the Official Ghosts, which then harm the Hexagram Body, it is called "helping the Ghost to harm the Body," indicating trouble from wealth or relationships. If the World Line is broken by the Month Builder, there will be a risk of early death. If the Year God clashes with the Body position, there will certainly be illness and misfortune. Additionally, it should be considered according to the Five Phases of the person's birth: those with a Metal destiny fear Water Ghosts and Fire Ghosts, but not Wood Ghosts or Earth Ghosts; those with a Wood destiny fear Metal Ghosts and Fire Ghosts, but not Water Ghosts or Earth Ghosts; those with a Water destiny fear Wood Ghosts and Earth Ghosts, but not Metal Ghosts or Fire Ghosts; those with a Fire destiny fear Water Ghosts and Earth Ghosts, but not Wood Ghosts or Metal Ghosts; those with an Earth destiny fear Wood Ghosts and Metal Ghosts, but not Water Ghosts or Fire Ghosts.

Guan Lu's formula for the course of life and fate says: For elderly people, it is appropriate to enter the "mourn" phase of their destiny, but for young people, it is not suitable. When one reaches the years of "death" and "mourn," they are likely to encounter legal troubles or bereavement. When one reaches the years of "womb" and "nurturing," they will certainly have many domestic animals. When one reaches the "prosperity" phase, it is most favorable for advancement. When one reaches the "bathing" phase, litigation is inevitable. When one reaches the "capping" phase and has auspicious stars, it is not advisable to be confronted by conflicting forces. When one reaches the "officialdom" phase and encounters malevolent stars, it is most favorable to have supporting elements. If one reaches the "decline" phase but encounters strong vitality, they will achieve success. If one reaches the "illness" phase but receives generation and support, they will remain safe. If one is in the "extinction" phase but encounters generation, they will certainly prosper. If one is in the "mourn" phase but is broken through, they will certainly flourish. If the official star that generates me is strong, I will achieve honor and status. The sovereign year and the destiny element prefer harmony and dislike conflict. The sovereign year and the destiny course prefer mutual generation and dislike mutual control. If there is both conflict and confrontation, yet a forced harmony, there will certainly be injuries and wounds. According to Guan Lu's formula for the destiny and fate, the destiny is mainly determined by the nayin sound element. For example, those born in the years of Jiazi and Yichou have the nayin sound element of metal, thus they are considered to have a metal destiny. The matching of this destiny with the course of life and the current year's sovereign year is determined solely by the twelve long-life palaces to determine fortune and misfortune. This differs from the method used in other books, which use the earthly branch of the birth year as the destiny element. This is noted here as a supplement.
