Charting guides: Chinese Almanac, Chinese Perpetual Calendar

The *Biyu Jing* records that the Mysterious Lady of the Ninth Heaven said: It is better to give away one's wife and children than to reveal the technique of "You Du" to others. To discern enemy movements, one must necessarily use the method of "You Du" for judgment. On Jia day and Ji day, take "Da Ji" (the Ox God); on Yi day and Geng day, take "Shen Hou" (the Rat God); on Bing day and Xin day, take "Gong Cao" (the Tiger God); on Ding day and Ren day, take "Tai Yi" (the Snake God); on Wu day and Gui day, take "Song Song" (the Monkey God). All these are calculated by placing the Month General on the hour. When hearing of enemy movements, if "You Du" is placed on the Day Branch, the enemy will arrive immediately; if it is separated by one branch, the enemy will arrive within a day; if separated by two branches, the enemy will arrive two days later; if separated by three branches, the enemy has already passed. If "You Du" is in a prosperous and strong state and overcomes the Day Branch, the danger is greater; if it is in a state of captivity or death and does not overcome the Day Branch, there is no need to worry.

The person explaining said: "The 'Official God' and the 'Criminal God' together are also called 'You Du'. The Official God is before Tian Yi, and the Criminal God is after Tian Yi. If the Criminal God comes to fall on my position in the year branch, it will only plot against me alone. There is another view: taking the Official God as 'You Du' and the Thief God as 'Lu Du', both are calculated in the same way. If they fall on the day branch, one must not go to war. On Jia day and Ji day, the Official God is in Shen, and the Thief God is in Yin; on Yi day and Geng day, the Official God is in Zi, and the Thief God is in Wu; on Bing day and Xin day, the Official God is in Yin, the Thief God is in Shen (in some versions, 'Shen' is 'Si'), and the Robber God is in Hai; on Ding day and Ren day, the Official God is in Si, the Thief God is in Shen, and the Robber God is in Hai; on Wu day and Gui day, the Official God is in Shen, the Thief God is in Si, and the Robber God is in Zi."

The explanation states: On days of申, 子, and 辰, the Heavenly Thief is 「功曹」 (寅神). On days of亥, 卯, and 未, the Heavenly Thief is 「太乙」 (巳神). On days of巳, 酉, and 丑, the Heavenly Thief is 「登明」 (亥神). On days of寅, 午, and 戌, the Heavenly Thief is 「传送」 (申神).

The explanation says: "You Du" is a general deity who oversees the Heavenly Thief, Heavenly Killer, and other deities. If You Du is positioned over the Chen branch, the enemy will arrive immediately; if it is positioned over a favorable direction, there will be no battle, and enemy soldiers will come to surrender; if it is positioned over a direction that I fear, there will be a great battle, leading to father and son not being close and internal and external trust being broken. If You Du is positioned in the East, military operations will be dangerous; if it is positioned in the West, military strength cannot be applied; if it is positioned in the South, it is favorable for organizing troops and rewarding soldiers; if it is positioned in the North, it is favorable for defending against enemies. All generals must understand You Du; if a general does not understand this, he is no different from an ordinary soldier. To apply the methods of the general, on Jia day and Ji day, take Great Favor; on Yi day and Geng day, take Shenhou; on Bing day and Xin day, take Gongcao; on Ding day and Ren day, take Taiyi; on Wu day and Gui day, take ChuanSong.

The explanation states: All cases where a general is positioned on the day branch and it is mutually controlling, indicate that enemies will arrive very quickly. If the general is positioned on the seasons' gods of the fourth quarters, namely the years of the earth branches Chou, Xu, Wei, and Chen, it indicates a high-ranking official, such as a governor, and also suggests that enemies will come (in some editions, it is written as 'seek'). If the general is positioned on the first quarters' gods, namely the years of the earth branches Yin, Shen, Si, and Hai, enemies will not come (in some editions, it is written as 'seek'). If the general is positioned on the position of Tianyi, then if it is separated by one earth branch, enemies will arrive within one day; if separated by two earth branches, within two days; if separated by three earth branches, within three days; if separated by four earth branches, there will be no enemies. If the general is positioned on the three earth branches following it, it indicates that the situation has already passed. In all cases, wherever the three generals are positioned, enemies will be located below that position.

To find out about the enemy, go to the direction of the 'Heavenly Ear'. The 'Heavenly Ear' refers to the two deities 'Great Auspicious' (Chou) and 'Small Auspicious' (Wei). According to the method of casting a divination chart by the hour, if the Bright Star enters the Malefic of Violence, the enemy will come; if the Malefic of Violence enters the Bright Star, the enemy will not come. Bing and Ding belong to the Malefic of Violence (Fire), while Geng and Xin belong to the Bright Star (Metal, 'Xin' is sometimes written as 'Shen'). It is said that when the Heavenly One is added to the Day Stem, the enemy will arrive today; when the Heavenly Gang, Small Auspicious, Heavenly Emperor, and God of Marriage are added to the Day Branch, the enemy will arrive very quickly. It is also said that when the Heavenly Gang is added to the four first quarters, the message received is false; when added to the four middle quarters, the enemy is halfway; when added to the four last quarters, the enemy will arrive immediately.

The explanation says: If one is ahead but does not know where the enemy is hidden, look at the direction where the 'Heavenly Eye' is approaching. The enemy is located below that direction. The Heavenly Eye refers to the Root Mansion in spring, which is below the Yi position; the Willow Mansion in summer, which is below the Wu position; the Stomach Mansion in autumn, which is below the Xin position; and the Girl Mansion in winter, which is below the Gui position. Another explanation says: The God of the After is the Black Tortoise. When it is added to the day and hour, the enemy will arrive quickly. The explanation says: If enemy information is heard at night, and the Three Punishments deities are added to the day branch, the enemy will come very quickly. The Three Punishments refer to the Heavenly Gang (Chen), the Great Opposition (Mao), and the Taiyi (Si) deities. Another divination for enemy information: Place the Month General on the hour and look at the Heavenly Gang. If it is in a position like a house or is adjacent to the day branch, do not send out troops, for sending troops will surely result in being plundered.

The explanation says: If White Tiger and Gou Chen are added upon the ground of one's own side, and what is heard corresponds to oneself, then there will be thieves. If it is on a Jia day, there will certainly be enemies mobilizing troops and engaging in battle with bloodshed. If Teng She and Vermilion Bird are added upon, it will only be a false alarm. If Transmission is added upon the four Mengs, the enemy has just set out; if added upon the four Zhongs, the enemy is already halfway; if added upon the four Si, the enemy will arrive immediately.

The explanation says: When inquiring about thieves or spies, to determine their location, place the Month General on the hour and look at 'Great Favor'. If 'Great Favor' is on the Zi or Wu position, the thief is under 'Great Opposition' (Mao). If it is on the Chou or Wei position, the thief is under 'Supreme Brightness' (Si). If it is on the Yin or Shen position, the thief is under 'Messenger' (Shen). If it is on the Mao or You position, the thief is under 'Following Leader' (You). If it is on the Chen or Xu position, the thief is under 'Bright Start' (Hai). If it is on the Si or Hai position, the thief is under 'Great Favor' (Chou). If these positions are not avoided, injury is certain. When hearing of a thief, use the Month General on the hour, then look at the position before 'Great Favor'. According to the correct hour, if 'Great Opposition', 'Supreme Brightness', and 'Supreme Brightness' are placed on the Day Stem, the thief is ahead. If they are placed on the Earthly Branch, the thief is behind.

The explanation states: On Jia day and Ji day, Zi is the official god and Hai is the thief god; on Yi day and Geng day, Hai is the official god and You is the thief god; on Bing day and Xin day, Yin is the official god and Si is the thief god; on Ding day and Ren day, Si is the official god and Shen is the thief god; on Wu day and Gui day, Shen is the official god and Mao is the thief god. If the thief god is in a state of life qi, the enemy will certainly come; if it is in a state of death qi, the enemy will not arrive. In addition, the good or bad outcomes discussed at this time can be understood and explored through one's own judgment.

The 130th entry on the Five Phases' victory and defeat

The concept of "five elements victory and defeat" determines which side, the "host" (the one who is on the defensive and acts later) or the "guest" (the one who is on the offensive and acts first), is advantageous or disadvantaged, based on the five elements associated with the day branch and the hour. If the day is of the metal element and the hour is also of the metal element, the five elements are in harmony, there will be no obstacles, and military movements will not encounter enemies; white banners are suitable. If there are reports of military movements, they are just empty talk. If the day is of the metal element and the hour is of the water element, the metal element is weakened by the water. If the day is the seventh day (申), the first day (子), or the third day (辰), one should avoid the seventh hour (申), the first hour (子), or the third hour (辰). At this time, military movements will not encounter enemies; black banners are suitable. If there are reports of warfare, the news will not come true, even if enemy troops are encountered, there will be no battle, and both sides will withdraw without fighting.

When a day of metal meets a time of fire, fire overcomes metal. If this day is the day of寅 (Yin), 午 (Wu), or 戌 (Xu), one should avoid the hours of寅 (Yin), 午 (Wu), and 戌 (Xu). At this time, it is advisable to act as the guest, meaning to take the initiative: seize the opportunity when the enemy has not yet moved, and quickly lead troops to attack, which is advantageous. The banners should be red. If the enemy attacks first, then one should not engage. If there is military intelligence indicating danger, one must be vigilant. When a day of metal meets a time of wood, metal overcomes wood. It is advisable to act as the host, and one should not take the initiative to go out. The banners should be white. If the enemy attacks, one should only form a good formation and be ready, ensuring victory in battle. At this time, if there is military intelligence, it is a great omen. When a day of metal meets a time of earth, earth generates metal, so there will be no encounter with the enemy and no battle. The banners should be yellow. If there is military intelligence, there is no need to worry. However, if it is the hour of子 (Zi) or 子时 (Zi hour), one should still avoid it.

On a fire day encountering a fire hour, the same element is present, causing no harm, and there will be no confrontation. Even if there is a meeting, there will be no battle. Red banners are suitable. If military intelligence comes in, it is just false news. On a fire day encountering a water hour, water overcomes fire, so it is suitable to be the guest. If military intelligence comes in, it indicates danger, and one should hurry to take cover. If enemies have not yet moved, we should take the initiative to attack, strike together strongly, and use black banners. If the enemy attacks first, we should fortify and hold our ground, not going out to fight. On a fire day encountering a metal hour, fire overcomes metal, so it is suitable to be the host. Initiating an attack is not advisable. If the enemy attacks us, we should raise red military banners to counterattack and surely win.

On a fire day encountering earth, fire generates earth, which causes no harm. Even if an enemy is encountered, there will be no damage. Yellow banners are suitable. If military intelligence comes in, it is likely false. On a fire day encountering wood, wood generates fire, which is also a mutual generation rather than mutual control. It is still necessary to check whether the time's energy is weak or strong. Overall, it is favorable to take the initiative. If the enemy attacks, raise red banners to counterattack. Military intelligence will come in. On a wood day encountering water, water generates wood, which causes no harm. However, it is not advisable to take any action. Affairs are mostly difficult to complete, and there will be no battle. If military intelligence comes in, it is just empty talk.

When wood meets fire on a day, wood generates fire but its energy is drained. It is advisable to act as the guest, quickly leading troops to confront the enemy, which is favorable. The banners should be red. If the enemy attacks first, do not engage. If military intelligence indicates danger, it should be determined based on the strength of the hour's energy. On days of Si, You, or Chou, one should avoid the hours of Si, You, and Chou respectively. When wood meets metal, metal overcomes wood. It is advisable to act as the guest, and quickly leading troops to strike first is favorable. The banners should be white. If the enemy attacks first, it is better to hold firm and not engage. When wood meets water, there will be no enemy encounter. Even if an enemy appears, they will retreat on their own. The banners should be black. If military intelligence indicates danger, it is a false report. When wood meets earth, wood overcomes earth. It is advisable to act as the host. If the enemy attacks, raise green banners to confront them. If military intelligence indicates danger, it is ominous.

On a day of water, if the time is also water, they share the same energy and there is no harm. There will be no enemy encountered, and even if there is an enemy, it will naturally disperse. Black banners are suitable. If there is military intelligence coming in, it is just a false report. On a day of water, if the time is fire, water overcomes fire. It is favorable to take the initiative as the master. Be careful not to act first. If the enemy attacks first, raise a white banner and launch a large counterattack. At this time, if there is military intelligence coming in, it is a great auspicious sign. On a day of water, if the time is metal, metal generates water. Even if encountering enemies, there will be no harm. A white banner is suitable. If there is military intelligence coming in, it is still a false report. On a day of water, if the time is wood, water generates wood but the energy is drained. A green banner is suitable. If there is military intelligence coming in, it is also a false report.

When water days meet earth days, earth controls water, so it is not advisable to mobilize troops. If there is military intelligence reporting enemy movements, just hold back and do not worry. Remember that although earth can control water, when water is strong it can break through earth embankments. Therefore, one must examine the strength and weakness of the time's energy. If the enemy comes with earth energy and the earth energy is strong, do not engage in battle; if the earth energy has weakened, then raise black banners to attack. When earth days meet earth days, they share the same energy and there is no harm, but still do not mobilize troops. The banners should be yellow. If there is military intelligence, it is just false information.

When the day is of Earth and the day is a Sunday, if the Wood element appears, Wood overcomes Earth, so it is advisable to take the role of the guest, and to attack before the enemy takes action, which is advantageous. The banner should be of the green color. If the enemy remains entrenched and does not come out, do not engage in battle. If there is military intelligence coming in, it indicates a凶 (adverse outcome). When the day is of Earth and the day is a Sunday, and the Metal element appears, Earth generates Metal, so there will be no encounter with the enemy, even if there is an encounter, it will not cause harm. If there is military intelligence coming in, it is false information. When the day is of Earth and the day is a Sunday, and the Fire element appears, Fire generates Earth, so the defending side should not move rashly. Even if the enemy attacks, do not engage in battle. If forced to fight, there will be some setback. If there is military intelligence coming in, there will be minor burning and disturbances. When the day is of Earth and the day is a Sunday, and the Water element appears, first observe the strength and weakness of the hour's energy, then decide whether to move or stay still: if the Earth energy is strong, it is advisable to take the role of the host; if the Water energy is strong, it is advisable to take the role of the guest. If the enemy's strength is at its peak, do not engage in battle, wait until their strength wanes before attacking. If there is military intelligence coming in, it indicates an adverse outcome.

Battle Position 131

The Long Head Classic says: When about to send troops into battle, the initial information about military affairs is first heard on a day of wood. Any military actions from all directions, such as invasions or disputes and revenge, heard on a day of wood are considered unfavorable. When our side decides to launch an attack, we must choose a day of fire and a time of fire to travel. When sending troops on a day of fire, the departure must also take place through a gate belonging to fire. This is called the father and son working together to eliminate harm, with the son avenging the father. Wood generates fire, so wood is the father and fire is the son. When the information is heard on a day of wood, we use the day and time of fire to retaliate. Therefore, we must depart on a day and time of fire through a fire gate, avoiding the 'metal gate' and ensuring that no metal-related spirits or omens affect the general's birth year. This refers precisely to the principle that metal overcomes wood.

For example, on the Jiazi day in the third month, the month general 'Congkui' (You) is placed on the Xu position, and an alarm is heard on that day. Jia belongs to wood, making it a wood day; when the time to go out for battle comes, it is changed to the Si and Wu hours of the丙 and 丁 days, thus departing at the fire hour. On the divination board, 'Shengguang' (Wu) and 'Taiyi' (Si) are both fire-related gates, and the hour of 'Taiyi' is exactly the fire hour. Another example: if the general's age position falls on a wood position, and the metal 'ChuanSong' (Shen) is placed over it, this indicates that the metal god is attacking the general's age position. If the army moves directly to the southwest towards the Shen position, and there is also the metal 'Congkui' placed over it, this is equivalent to departing from the metal gate. This campaign must not involve anything related to metal, otherwise it will be extremely dangerous. Conversely, if the two fire gods 'Taiyi' and 'Shengguang' are placed over the general's age position, this is a good omen.

The Long Head Classic says: When arranging an army and deploying troops, one must observe and face the direction of the White Tiger. The position of the Six Jia is the Azure Dragon, the position of the Six Bing is the Vermilion Bird, the position of the Six Wu is Gou Chen, the position of the Six Geng is the White Tiger, and the position of the Six Gui is the Black Tortoise. For example, in the Jiazi decade, the Azure Dragon is at the Zi position, the Vermilion Bird at the Yin position, Gou Chen at the Chen position, the White Tiger at the Wu position, and the Black Tortoise at the You position. The commander himself stands at the position of the Azure Dragon; when enforcing punishment, one should face the Vermilion Bird; when moving troops, one should take the direction of Gou Chen; place the White Tiger position on the enemy, hide oneself at Gou Chen, and take the direction of the Black Tortoise. All other situations follow the same pattern. However, the position of the White Tiger must not be used to harm the commander's personal heavenly spirit. For example, if the commander's personal year is at "Congui" (You), and "Chuan Song" (Shen) is above it, and the White Tiger in the Jiazi decade is at "Sheng Guang" (Wu), then the fire of Wu will overcome the metal of Shen, thus harming the heavenly spirit of the commander's personal year.

The constellations of Qiu and Lou are oriented to the left, while those of Jiao and Kang are oriented to the right. The handle of the Big Dipper points toward Liu. When the balance of power is opened and follows the direction of the Dipper's handle, this is called attacking Yang with Yin. Using the River Chief (Xu) added to the Great Opposition (Mao) belongs to Yin; using the Heavenly Gang (Chen) added to From Chief (You) belongs to Yang. Attacking Xiao Ji (Wei) with Da Ji (Chou) is when the daily god is placed on the four central positions of Zi, Wu, Mao, and You; if instead Yang attacks Yin by attacking Da Ji's position, it is an army moving against heaven, which is inauspicious. Also, green should not clash with white, meaning that on Ji and Yi days, military campaigns should not be directed westward, which would lead to loss. Black should not clash with yellow, meaning that on Ren and Gui days, attacks should not be directed toward the four seasonal directions of Chen, Xu, Chou, and Wei, but can be directed toward the Luo position. The rest should be inferred in the same way. It is also said that on the days of Geng and Xin in spring, attacking southward is inauspicious, and on the days of Wu and Ji in spring, attacking eastward is inauspicious.

First determine the guardian deity of the day, then count from the position following it to attack the direction in front. For example, on Jiayin day, counting two positions backward leads to Zi. It is also said that the 'Tianyi' and other auspicious generals should be stationed at the place to be attacked. If the heavenly deity of the year can subdue the deity being attacked and the heavenly deity above it, then the enemy can be captured. One must not attack the deity that is in its prime, as this will lead to future misfortune. Attacking the parents with the son is greatly against the natural order, and the power will not be effective, inevitably causing loss of troops and injury to oneself. On Jia or Yi days, attacking to the north is wrong, as the north is water, which is the parent of wood. This goes against the natural order, and the commander will suffer defeat. Attacking to the south is attacking one's own kind, which is not respected, and will lead to humiliation. Attacking to the southwest will result in defeat, as it is a dead end. Attacking to the southeast is like fighting oneself. Attacking the four directions of Qian, Kun, Gen, and Xun is attacking the direction that one can overcome, which is highly auspicious and brings fortune. The rest should be treated in the same way.

First, one must examine the principles of life and death, which involve counting two positions from a certain deity to find the connected deity. Next, adding the way of 'Tianyi' refers to the auspicious general associated with the Jia and Gui stems in the Six Rats system. Therefore, those who understand the 'Three Heavens' are able to: first, act in the direction indicated by the Big Dipper; second, attack the direction that they can overcome; third, attack the front position from the second position behind. On the first day of the first month, the month general is placed on the Ren position, and from the Xu position, it attacks the Chen position, which is called the second position behind. The main general is fifty years old, and his personal year is at the Mao position, with 'Gongcao' (Yin) placed upon it. In the Jiazi cycle, the White Tiger is at 'Shengguang' (Wu), and Wu and Mao do not conflict, nor do they clash with the heavenly deity on the main general's personal year. Attacking the Chen position from the east or west is precisely attacking the direction that can be overcome. In addition, the Gou Chen among the four generals attacks the position it can overcome. The heavenly deity on the personal year and the Gou Chen deity can both subdue the attacked position. If the upper position overcomes the lower position, this is called the enemy surrendering. Furthermore, attacking the direction of the Room mansion and Heart mansion by facing away from the Stomach mansion and Hairy Head mansion, following the direction of the Big Dipper, is following the heavenly way, and one person can be as effective as a hundred.

Whenever there is a battle, the one who attacks first is considered the guest, and the one who attacks later is the host. The one who attacks first should have the lower spirit restrain the upper spirit; the one who attacks later should not allow the upper spirit to harm the lower spirit. Here, the term upper and lower refers to the earthly branch that the Gou Chen is added upon. If the energy of the earthly branch is stronger than the Heavenly General, the host side wins; if the Heavenly General of the guest side is stronger than the earthly branch, the guest side defeats the host. Conversely, even if the forces are strong, the commander of the host side will certainly lack the courage to fight.

The Eight Palaces, 132nd Palace

The eight directions governed by the Eight Trigrams must be occupied when forming an array or setting up a camp, in order to align with the functions of yin and yang and their dynamic and static aspects. When the army is stationed in the east, the east belongs to the "Zhen Palace," and the Zhen hexagram represents a single yang line at the bottom (inner) and two yin lines at the top (outer). Therefore, the yang line is chosen as the position for the commander's tent. The commander's tent should be set deep within, and music should be played within the army, and the army's reputation and strength should be promoted first. The commander must not allow enemies to see him carrying out punishments or rewards. The commander should perform sacrifices to the green military flag on the Jia and Yi days. When two armies engage in battle, the commander must not be exposed.

When the army is stationed in the southeast, the southeast belongs to the "Xun Palace." The Xun hexagram consists of one yin line at the bottom (inner) and two yang lines at the top (outer), so the yin line is taken as the position of the commander. The commander's tent should be deeply concealed, and the commander should first clearly announce orders, carefully control the spread of information, act with integrity and fairness, and implement policies from near to far. The commander himself should remain hidden, and once orders are issued, they must be carried out without fail. When the army is stationed in the south, the south belongs to the "Li Palace." The Li hexagram consists of one yin line in the center and two yang lines outside, so the yin line is taken as the position of the commander. The commander's tent should be set in the center of the military formation. The commander should be strict in enforcing discipline externally, avoid being overly familiar with others, and let people feel fear from a distance. Internally, he should humbly accept talented individuals, prioritize showing respect, and be attentive to the sentiments of subordinates. On the days of Bing and Ding, a red military flag should be worshipped. When going into battle, the commander should be stationed in the center of the military formation, not deeply concealed, and should also display his presence appropriately.

The army is stationed in the southwest, where the southwest is the "Kun Palace." The image of the Kun hexagram is that all three lines are yin. The general's tent should be set in the southwest corner of the camp. The commander should be solemn and upright, kind and gentle, focusing on a pleasant expression and the ability to manage his troops. He should not act rashly, but follow the right course and be fortunate. On the Wu day and Ji day, worship the yellow military flag. Whether going out to fight or staying in the camp, avoid exposure. The army is stationed in the west, where the west is the "Dui Palace." The image of the Dui hexagram is one yin line on top (outer) and two yang lines below (inner), so the yin line is taken as the position of the main commander. The general's tent should be set in an outer position. The commander should be resolute and strict, enforce discipline, make decisions and punishments decisively, while also applying broad benevolence in accordance with the situation. On the Geng day and Xin day, worship the white military flag. When going out to fight, it is suitable to be close to the outer area, inspecting the troops rather than hiding deeply.

The army is stationed in the northwest, where the northwest is the "Qian Palace." The Qian hexagram has all three lines yang. The general's headquarters should not be fixed in one place; the commander should be upright and flexible, fully utilizing his wisdom and adapting to changing circumstances. When going into battle, he should not reveal his position, commanding the entire army to advance and retreat, and using both wings according to the situation. When the army is stationed in the north, the north is the "Kan Palace." The Kan hexagram has two yin lines on the outside and one yang line in the center, and that yang line represents the position of the commander. The general's headquarters should be set in the center of the army; the commander should appear gentle and courteous to guests, but have a firm and decisive mind inside. He should move troops without hesitation. On the days of Ren and Gui, he should worship the black military flag. When going into battle, he should command from the center, neither exposing himself too much nor hiding too deeply.

The army is stationed in the Northeast, which is the "Gen Palace." The image of the Gen hexagram is one yang line on top (outer) and two yin lines below (inner), so the yang line is taken as the position of the commander. The headquarters should be set in a place that is more external, and the commander should be cautious and sincere, not believing in baseless rumors or being disturbed by words spread by the enemy. Do not be anxious or act rashly because of this. When going out to fight, the commander should be close to the outer area to direct the troops. In this way, the army stationed in a certain direction follows the nature of the hexagram of that direction, which is considered wise. All movements and actions should be in harmony with heaven, earth, spirits, and ghosts, and also with a mind free from private desires, only then can it be called good.
