Charting guides: Chinese Almanac, Chinese Perpetual Calendar

When a person is cut or pierced by weapons such as knives, guns, arrows, and spears and bleeds, he will certainly feel extremely thirsty. At this time, he must not be given soup or water immediately, for the feathers attached to the arrowheads may still be stuck in his mouth and be swallowed along with the water. Instead, only dry food should be given. Eating something fatty is not harmful; the main thing is to relieve his thirst. However, he must not drink porridge in large amounts, as this may cause the blood to surge out and result in his death. There are eight things that must be avoided for someone with a wound: first, anger; second, laughter; third, loud talking; fourth, physical exertion; fifth, excessive thinking; sixth, drinking hot soup or porridge; seventh, drinking alcohol; and eighth, eating salty or sour food. If any of these eight things are done, there is no chance of survival.

There are nine types of injuries that cannot be cured: the first is an injury to the 'brain gate' (below the occipital bone at the back of the head), the second is an injury to the 'heavenly window' (where the carotid artery is located on the neck side), the third is an injury to the large pulsing artery on the arm, the fourth is an injury to the large artery on the inner side of the thigh, the fifth is an injury to the heart, the sixth is an injury to the breast, the seventh is an injury to the 'cuckoo's tail' (at the sternum's lower end), the eighth is an injury to the small intestine, and the ninth is an injury to the five internal organs. These nine areas are all vital and fatal locations.

There is another saying: there are four types of injuries caused by metal that cannot be healed. The first is when the brain marrow flows out. The second is when the skull breaks, with a boiling sound coming from the throat, a hoarse voice, and the eyes staring straight ahead. The third is when the pain is not at the wound site, which is called injuring the meridians. The fourth is when the bleeding does not stop, with the initial blood being bright red and the later blood turning black, or when the muscles at the injury site rot and smell bad, feeling cold and hard to the touch, making the wound difficult to heal. These four conditions cannot be saved. In addition, one must examine the pulse: if the pulse is weak and fine, the person can survive; if the pulse is rapid and strong, the person will die. If the pulse is deep and small, the person can survive; if the pulse is floating and large, the person will die. If the injury is on the yang part (the outer side of the body) and the person has lost too much blood with a weak and slow pulse, they can survive; but if the pulse comes quickly and urgently, they will die.

Treating Metal Wounds, Number 14

The formula for a medicine for wounds: On the fifth day of the fifth lunar month in the early morning, send four people to collect herbs and leaves from each of the four directions, within five li, taking half a handful of each. Do not miss any. By noon on that day, cut the herbs into pieces and put them into a stone mortar to pound until they are very fine. Prepare one dou of lime in advance and pound it together with the herbs. Then select three strong and thick trees, drill ten holes into each tree so that they can hold the medicine. Fill the holes with the medicine, press it tightly and compact it. Then tie the openings with hemp rope. Use a mixture of hemp and lime to make a paste and seal the holes tightly to prevent the medicinal vapor from escaping. Wrap the trees with tree bark to secure them. On the ninth day of the ninth lunar month at the hour of the rat, take the medicine out and place it in a shady area to dry for one hundred days, and the medicine is ready. After taking it out, pound and dry it again until it is completely dry, then pound it once more, and finally sieve it into a fine powder using silk cloth.

For any wound caused by a cut or injury that is bleeding, apply this medicine on the wound and cover it properly. Do not let the injured area move, and it will heal within ten days. It will not become pus-filled, swollen, or afraid of wind. If the injury has been several days before getting the medicine, first wash the wound with warm water to remove the blood clots, then apply the medicine. This medicine is as effective as a divine remedy; one should prepare a good amount in advance. There is no better medicine for treating wounds than this.

General Discussion on Epidemic Qi, Volume 15

Setting up camp must avoid low-lying and damp areas near mountains and rivers. The dampness and dry toxins in such places can enter through the mouth and nose, and the miasma in mountainous areas can cause malaria and epidemic diseases. For example, if the cold and hot energies are out of balance, such as when it is cold in summer and warm in winter, or if soldiers catch summer heat in the height of summer, with the heat accumulating between the skin, muscles, and abdomen, and the soldiers being numerous, their body heat and breaths mingle and become warm and foul, then epidemic diseases occur. There is another situation where the water and soil characteristics and the cold or warm climate of the camp are not suitable for the soldiers' constitutions, causing the yin and yang energies to become disordered in the intestines and stomach, leading to cholera and vomiting and diarrhea. These three situations often occur in places where people and horses gather and diseases are easily spread, accounting for five or six out of ten cases. Therefore, when engaging in battle, how can one not prepare in advance?

Take three pills each time with rice soup. After taking, the patient may vomit, have diarrhea, or sweat. If neither vomiting, diarrhea, nor sweating occurs, take another dose. If still no vomiting or diarrhea, take another dose with hot rice soup to induce symptoms. Adjust the dosage according to the patient's condition.

A formula for treating cholera with vomiting and diarrhea: one handful of mulberry leaves, one handful of萹竹 (which is also called萹蓄, "bian" is sometimes written as "pian"). Cut them into pieces and grind into powder, then take it with one large cup of water. A formula for treating mountain miasma malaria: three liang of常山, twenty-seven pieces of Chinese date, three inches of甑带, and one single clove of garlic. Use two large cups of wine to decoct it, and divide it into two doses. Take the first dose before the malaria attack occurs, and the second dose when the attack is about to occur. If the attack does not happen again, stop the medication. A formula for treating warm malaria: one liang of ephedra, remove its root and nodes; one he (sometimes written as one fen) of oyster powder; half a liang each of蜀漆, licorice, rhinoceros horn powder, and Anemarrhena. Strain out the residue, and divide into three doses to be taken in the morning, before noon, and at night.

Treating frostbite, the 17th remedy

Soldiers crossing water and walking on ice, enduring frost and cold winds while marching, suffer greatly from severe cold and frostbite. Combined with irregular diet and physical weakness and fatigue, their faces, hands and feet become afflicted with "皲瘃" (skin cracking and frostbite). A remedy for cracked and bleeding hands and feet: wash the affected area with pig pancreas, and the bleeding will stop immediately. A remedy for cracked and frostbitten hands and feet: take four sheng of Sichuan prickly ash, boil it in water, strain out the herbs, and pour the liquid to soak the affected area. After soaking, let it dry; then soak again and let it dry again. Finally, apply sheep brain marrow or pig brain marrow, which is especially effective.

A remedy for hands and feet frozen and cracked after crossing water and facing frost: take lotus leaves, boil them strongly to make a concentrated juice, and wash the affected area with the hot juice to cure it. A remedy for hands and feet cracked and forming sores: take sheep fat, melt it into a thick oil, add cooked red lead, mix them evenly, and apply the mixture to the affected area; after three or five applications, it will be healed. A remedy for cracks in the joints of fingers and toes that are about to fall off: take a green stone from Laizhou that can be used to make tools, carefully scrape the stone powder with a knife; if the joint is still connected by a little tendon, cover it thickly with lime powder and wrap it tightly with cloth; the pain will stop immediately, and the fingers will recover completely within ten days.

Ritual to Remove Evil Influences, Number 18

The method of defeating the enemy through厌胜 involves setting a sacrifice to the Big Dipper star at midnight without offering wine or meat, but only burning incense and performing the ritual. Use white reed grass to cover the offerings, and present five-colored silk cloth as sacrificial offerings. The commander faces north and bows twice, then states the matters to be prayed for three times in offering wine. Cut branches from trees in the shady side to make「six Jia符」, writing the names of the Six Jia deities on them. After the sacrifice, make six cloth bags, each containing one符. Then tie the bag corresponding to the current ten-day period into the flag's surface in the army, without letting anyone notice. When raising the flag, the enemy will be frightened and flee.

A method to repel epidemic diseases: when a large epidemic occurs in the army, take the heads of captured and beheaded enemies, regardless of the number, and burn them in the upwind direction. This method can be used when the disease among people and horses is severe, and it is also acceptable to use it even when the epidemic is mild. Let the smoke disperse the infected area (「attack」is alternatively written as 「epidemic」), and after some time, remove the remains, which can drive away the epidemic pathogenic qi.

The method to suppress the enemy's strong energy: if the enemy's commanding energy remains strong for a long time, first determine in which direction it is strongest. On the day of the beginning of the sixth jia cycle, at the exact hour of the first earthly branch (Zi), walk around the camp twenty-seven steps in the position of the "Monthly Void." There, draw the Eight Trigrams altar with cinnabar, dividing it into three layers. Inside the altar, write the names of the twelve earthly branches and the twelve month generals. Place them east, west, south, and north, each separated by several steps. Prepare one black dog and one white chicken. The commander wears white plain clothes, holds a sword in his right hand, and presses the two animals with his left hand, facing north. He silently recites the enemy commander's name and then kills the animals, burying them in the direction where the enemy's energy is strongest, three feet deep. Wait until the enemy's energy weakens before digging them up again.

The method of defeating an enemy general through厌胜 involves making the enemy general's destiny subject to our control.所谓 "destiny" refers to determining the enemy general's Five Phases (五行) by sending spies to secretly investigate his birth year, month, day, and hour. We then select a color that is currently dominant and capable of controlling his destiny. According to the prosperous and strong month, day, and hour, we secretly perform the ritual to subdue him. For example, if the enemy general is of the fire element and is at its peak, we choose a fire day and water hour, and conduct the ritual on a black path day, keeping it secret from outsiders. When engaging in battle, we should use a black flag to point towards the enemy as a means of clash and control (other Five Phases are handled similarly).

The method of using celestial symbols to control birds for setting ambushes involves hiding troops in forests and thickets at night. Concerned that birds might be startled and make noise, revealing the ambush, one should write in vermilion the names of the ten heavenly stems, the twelve earthly branches, the twelve lunar months, the names of the twenty-eight star mansions, and the names of the twelve zodiac animals for the years. These writings should be hung on bird nests and trees. The birds will then not make noise, allowing the hidden troops to remain undetected. The heavenly stems are from Jia to Gui, the earthly branches from Zi to Hai, the lunar months from the first month 'Zou' to the twelfth month 'Tu', the year names from 'She Ti Ge' to 'Chi Fen Ruo', and the star mansions from the Horn mansion to the Chariot mansion.

On the General Principles of Horse Selection, Volume 19

A horse born without any hair can travel a thousand li in a day. If it is born with one foot raised, it can travel five hundred li. Count the tendons on its legs; if there are only ten, it is an ordinary horse. If there are eleven or twelve, it can travel five hundred li. If there are thirteen, it can travel a thousand li. If there are more than thirteen, it is a heavenly horse (the character '过' in some editions is '枝'). If there are whorled hairs above the wrist joint, it can travel six hundred li. If its abdomen and back are straight, it can only travel a hundred li. If there are five round and firm parts on its neck, it can travel five hundred li. If the reflection in its eyes shows a child sitting beside it, it can travel two hundred li. If there is a yellow tendon network beneath its abdomen, it can travel five hundred li. If there is a horn-like protrusion below its ear, one inch long can travel three hundred li, two inches can travel five hundred li, and three inches can travel a thousand li. If its urine can splash over its front legs, it can travel five hundred li. If its neck is curved like a crow drinking water, it can travel a thousand li.

If a horse is seven days old and still cannot walk, but soon starts walking and can drink water by itself, it is a thousand-mile horse. Those that lift their feet when urinating are also like this (the character '足' in some editions is '前'). Those with hair growing upward on their belly are also good horses. Those with one inch of hair growing in their nostrils (the '芝兰' refers to the horse's nostrils) are inferior horses.

If the lines on the nose resemble the characters 「公」 or 「王」, the horse can live for twenty-five years. If the eyes are round and have spiral hairs, the horse can live for thirty years. If the area below the eye sockets is not full and the white part of the eye is excessive, the horse is easily startled. If the white part of the eye is shallow and not deep, and the lips do not cover the teeth, with a small and shallow mouth, the horse has poor eating habits. If the teeth are uneven and do not align properly, the horse is difficult to control. If the teeth have a hook-like shape at the top, it is considered good.

Using lime to coat a horse stall will harm the horse, and it is also not advisable to tie a horse to a door, as this may cause a pregnant mare to give birth prematurely. Keeping a monkey in the stable can prevent horses from getting sick and also remove scabies. It is not permissible to build a horse stall on a Wuyin day or during a Gengyin hour, as doing so will result in misfortune within a year. On a Bingyin day, one should not lead horses in or out, as this will lead to the death of both people and horses within three years. It is inauspicious to buy a horse on a Shen day, as the horse will surely die. Also avoid buying horses on Wuwu or Gengzi days, and do not bring horses into the stable on those days, as this will result in great defeat. Heavenly Time: General Discussion 114

Heavenly timing is the fundamental reliance of military strategists. As for the appearance of strange stars, the gathering and dispersing of clouds, the prosperity and strength of the six rhinoceros numbers, the auspiciousness and inauspiciousness of Dun Jia techniques, the occurrence of wind, dew, thunder, and rain, the opening and closing of sunny and cloudy days and night and day, thesympathetic response generated by the sound of battle drums, and the messages conveyed by the movements of birds—these things that communicate the intentions of heaven and earth, spirits and ghosts, and reveal omens of victory or defeat, good or bad fortune—what is the underlying principle behind them?

Chen Xu Dong believed that the principle of the operation of heaven and earth is extremely central and upright. Yang is substantial, while Yin is empty; the substantial side has regularity, while the empty side is ever-changing. Following its substantial aspect refers to decrees and regulations, which are expressions of constancy; following its empty aspect refers to strategies and cunning, which are expressions of adaptability. When acting, using the alternation of substantial and empty aspects is the true way of heaven and earth ("Zheng" is sometimes read as "Shen"). Therefore, one must understand: the establishment of decrees and strategies, as long as they correspond with heaven and earth, is called "Great Harmony." Sometimes heaven and earth show calamities, and I follow them to respond; sometimes they show auspicious signs, and I also follow them to respond. Because following itself conforms to the right path. If one can truly maintain the right path by following, how could there be failure in warfare?

Although this is the case, dark clouds (the character 黑 is sometimes interpreted as 云) rise from the camp, red vapors envelop the army, on the sixth day of the month a great wind arises, and on the three forms of land dense fog appears. These are all omens of defeat. When encountering such situations, if one can clearly perceive these ominous changes, rectify the decrees, restrain oneself, consult divination to choose a suitable place for relocating the camp, follow the heavenly phenomena and calculate the day branches, respectfully accept the heavenly warning (the character 戒 is sometimes interpreted as 恕) and self-reflect, then one can transform misfortune into good fortune. This is responding to heaven by following its ways.

The times I have listed, along with the phenomena of clouds and celestial signs, contain various methods of divination, and the choice of which to use depends on the commander's judgment based on the situation at hand. If one can truly win the people's hearts, follow the principles of heaven and earth, harmonize the nature of yin and yang, and prevent calamities from arising in the first place, it is because the policies and strategies are in accordance with the right path. At such a time, why would one need to spend effort examining the weather and relying on divination?
