Charting guides: Chinese Almanac, Chinese Perpetual Calendar

Heaven cracks open above the enemy's army (the character "裂" is sometimes interpreted as "制"), indicating that the enemy will disorder themselves on their own. The sky turns red like blood, indicating a battle will take place. Heavenly rain falls, and the army in the area where it falls will achieve a great victory. This rain, even if it falls on the enemy's side, will cause their defeat; if it falls on our side, we should avoid it. Fish and turtles fall from the sky; if they fall on the enemy's side, the enemy will be defeated; if they fall on our side, we should also avoid it. Blood rain falls from the sky; if it falls on the enemy's side, we should attack quickly and will win; if it falls on our side, we should avoid it; if it falls in the area between our side and the enemy's, the general will face a great battle, with both sides suffering heavy casualties.

Heavenly snowflakes and grain fall from the sky; if this occurs in the enemy's territory, it signifies the enemy's misfortune; if it occurs in our territory, we should take precautions. If feathers of birds and beasts from an island fall from the sky, it is a sign of great chaos. If down falls from the sky, it indicates that the general in the area where the cloud falls is influenced by evil strategies. If it appears like smoke but is not smoke, it is called "Qingyun" (auspicious cloud), and where the cloud clears, a virtuous person will appear. If it appears like a star but is not a star, it is called "Guixie" (returning evil), and the appearance of Guixie signifies that people will come to submit. If it appears like mist but is not mist, it is called "Qijun" (weeping army), and the appearance of Qijun indicates many generals will be killed. If it appears like thunder but is not thunder, it is called "Tiangu" (heavenly drum), and the appearance of Tiangu indicates many armies will be defeated. If the sky rains without being cloudy, it is called "Tianqi" (heaven weeping), and the appearance of Tianqi indicates the fall of a state. All phenomena in the world that show unusual changes should be taken seriously and dealt with cautiously.

The 178th chapter of the Earth section.

The ground cracking indicates a premonition of military conflict. If coins grow on the ground within the camp, it signifies that subordinates may plot rebellion, so precautions should be taken immediately. If the ground within the camp becomes hairy, it suggests that many officers and soldiers will flee to the enemy, so strict measures should be enforced. If the camp trembles while the army is stationed in the wild, it indicates the arrival of a calamitous star. If five grains grow on the camp ground, it signifies that the soldiers will have good fortune and the general will receive a fiefdom. If the color of the ground in the camp suddenly turns yellow, it is a sign of great joy. If the ground in the camp suddenly cracks, it indicates the defeat of the army and the death of the general, so the camp should be moved quickly to avoid danger. If the ground suddenly sinks, it is a sign that the commander will perish.

In the camp, if blood suddenly seeps out of the ground, it indicates that enemy troops are approaching, and one should quickly take shelter. If mountains within the city or the camp suddenly collapse at night, it signifies that officials and soldiers will scatter, and one should move the camp to avoid danger. For a military stronghold, if a mountain collapses in spring, it indicates that enemies will attack the city; if it collapses in summer, it means a great flood is coming; if it collapses in autumn, it means rebels will arrive; if it collapses in winter, it means there will be famine among the military and civilians. If the place where the camp is set up emits a roar like thunder, it indicates enemy attack, and one should be ready to defend quickly. If a stream suddenly dries up without reason, it indicates that troops with ambushes are coming. If the water suddenly turns red like blood, it means the soldiers will be confused and fight among themselves, and one should be ready to prevent this quickly.

Rainbow and Mist, Number 179

When attacking an enemy's city, if a rainbow curves from outside the city into it, the city will be captured and destroyed within three days. A rainbow of five colors appearing to drink the well water in the army's camp is a great凶 omen, and the camp should move to avoid it. If the rainbow falls over the camp, it is a sign of defeat. A rainbow surrounding the city indicates disorder within the city, and the attack should be urgent. A white rainbow appearing over the military camp signifies the army's defeat and bloodshed. If a white rainbow passes through the center, the army must not move out. If a white rainbow circles the city without closing, attack from the unsealed gap and it will surely be captured. If the white rainbow has already encircled the city and closed, wait until it gradually separates and then attack.

A red rainbow hanging straight from the sky to the ground indicates that enemy troops will arrive at the place where it falls. A bent rainbow appearing in the eleventh month signifies the defeat of the army and the death of generals. If a white rainbow appears in the sky like mist, the main camp should be on alert for spies, and there is a risk of rebellion among the generals and soldiers. Where a black rainbow appears, there will be a great flood coming to that place, and it is advisable to camp on high ground. A red rainbow half-hidden in the clouds indicates a fire and also a military defeat. A yellow rainbow appearing over the camp indicates that officials and soldiers will be greatly disturbed. A green rainbow is similar, but it does not bring disaster.

Thunder and Lightning, Number One Hundred and Eighty

Thunder in the military camp breaking trees indicates danger for the general; it is advisable to use this opportunity to reorganize military affairs. Pay attention to the days of Jiazi, Yichou, Wuyin, Xinmao, and Wuwu within the three months of spring to verify. If thunder and lightning strike, causing stones to fall and kill people, and the army is camping in the wild, the general will face a major battle, which will come to pass within a month. If thunder sounds once and then stops, it indicates the general has a significant mission to carry out. When about to engage in battle, if thunder sounds from behind our army's formation and gradually moves toward the enemy, victory is certain. Attacking in the direction of the thunder is auspicious. If thunder suddenly and violently comes from the enemy's side, it is dangerous; one should quickly retreat and avoid it.

Heavenly Stems: Jia, Yi, Bing, Ding, Wu, Ji, Geng, Xin, Ren, Gui Earthly Branches: Zi, Chou, Yin, Mao, Chen, Si, Wu, Wei, Shen, You, Xu, Hai Trigrams: Qian (Heaven), Dui (Lake), Li (Fire), Zhen (Thunder), Xun (Wind), Kan (Water), Gen (Mountain), Kun (Earth) Glossary: Southwest = Xibei When the sky is overcast but no rain falls, and thunder echoes above our army, we should then launch an attack and achieve a great victory. When two armies are engaged in battle, if a loud thunderclap stops the fighting, the side that strikes first will win. Thunder with a deep, round, and long sound indicates that advancing from the direction of the thunder is auspicious. If thunder sounds in all directions, unpredictable and drifting east, west, south, or north, it signifies a major battle within the army, with casualties on both sides. If a great thunderclap rapidly moves from our side to the enemy's, it indicates victory; if it moves from the enemy's side to ours, it indicates misfortune. If lightning strikes directly at the general's headquarters, we should immediately search (「檢」in some editions is 「驗」) for spies within the camp who are acting as agents for the enemy, and also be cautious of sudden attacks by unruly soldiers. Sometimes, thunder occurs in the middle of the night without clouds, indicating that officials and soldiers are disobedient to military orders. We must quickly show mercy and kindness to avert this calamity (「布惠」in some editions is 「講我」).

At the time of battle, when five-colored banners are pulled by the wind but remain motionless, this is a sign of a great victory; however, the enemy will fight fiercely and stubbornly, so one must be cautious and must not rashly pursue. When about to engage in battle, if the sound of the small drums is louder than usual, this is a sign of victory. If the sound of the horns is clear and vigorous, this is also a sign of victory. If there is no wind but the banners naturally flutter and their heads point toward the enemy's forces, this is a sign of victory. If the war horses neigh proudly and eagerly desire to advance, this is also a sign of victory.

The general's tent collapsing unexpectedly is a sign of defeat. The sound of the war drums is heavy and muffled, a sign of defeat. The sound of the horns is loud and turbid, not clear, a sign of defeat. The sound of the horns is restless and scattered, a sign of defeat. Sounds that are scattered and not full and harmonious indicate an impending internal disorder. The banners are disordered and not neat, a sign of defeat. The war horses also often show fear, neighing and retreating, a sign of defeat. Various signs of victory or defeat in battle can be carefully observed and discerned, and those who can do so are considered skilled in military affairs.

The site for setting up camp is being burned by Heavenly Fire, indicating that thieves will come quickly. If the fire starts without cause and burns the tents, it signifies a great flood is coming. If the water in streams suddenly rises, it foretells hidden enemies approaching; this place is dangerous, and the camp should be moved to avoid danger. Sometimes, when troops are about to go out or about to fight, if rabbits or deer run by, do not kill them; this is a sign of victory. If a yellow dragon appears in the camp, it indicates a great victory. If the water in ponds, marshes, or streams within the camp suddenly flows in from outside to inside, it suggests that soldiers will defy the general. If dragons fight within the camp or on either side, it indicates a large enemy force is coming, and also beware of a great flood.

A crowd of snakes gathering on the road before the camp indicates an imminent military threat. The bamboo and trees within the camp suddenly bleed, indicating the general will suffer a major calamity. The camp does not receive rain, yet the trees are moist, indicating the emergence of enemy troops. A sudden capture of fish with five colors should not be killed; if killed, a great flood will arrive immediately, otherwise there will be chaos among the troops. Sometimes the fish move up and down on the trees, and water will also arrive, so the camp should be moved to higher ground quickly to avoid danger. A chicken with two horns and two wings flying into the camp is a sign of victory; killing it will bring great misfortune. When two armies face each other, if a dragon is seen high above the enemy's army, the enemy will suffer a great defeat within a month.

A dog urinating on the main road in front of the camp indicates the need to move the camp to avoid disaster. The horses in the camp suddenly neigh, so the soldiers should be immediately awakened and armed to be on guard, as there is a fear that enemy soldiers may have infiltrated. A horse in front of the camp growing a horn on its forehead indicates many casualties. If the horse's hair turns red without cause, it indicates the general will suffer misfortune. If the general's horse neighs at night without reason, its master is in danger. If water suddenly appears in the city, it indicates enemy soldiers are coming to attack. If mice gnaw at armor, helmets, and weapons, it indicates injury to officers and soldiers. If mice move in large groups, there will be a great flood.

When a wind bringing calamity arrives, it is usually accompanied by a killing qi, obscuring the sunlight, with murky dust swirling up vigorously from all sides. When a harmonious wind arrives, it is often accompanied by pleasant and beautiful qi, with clear sunlight and a cool, refreshing atmosphere, allowing branches to sway freely at a height above the ground, passing through without stirring up dust.

The wind of the Yu tone uproots houses and breaks trees, indicating high rice prices (a variant text reads 'bravery'). The wind of the Shang tone uproots houses and breaks trees, foretelling military affairs. The wind of the Jue tone uproots houses and breaks trees, indicating sudden combat and fighting.

Divination on Punishment and Death, Chapter 185

When discussing the years, months, days, and hours, the Yang Virtue occupies its proper position, while the Yin Virtue resides on the Heavenly Stems. Regarding the mutual punishments among the Earthly Branches in the year, month, day, and hour: Zi (rat) punishes Mao (rabbit), Mao punishes Zi, Chou (ox) punishes Xu (dog), Xu punishes Wei (sheep), Wei punishes Chou, Chou punishes Si (snake), Si punishes Yin (tiger) (the character 'Yin' in some editions is 'Shen' (monkey)). Chen (dragon), Wu (horse), You (goat), and Hai (pig) each punish themselves. Zi, Chou, Yin, Si, and Shen are considered upper punishments, while Mao, Yin, and Si are lower punishments. A strong wind coming from the direction of the Three Punishments indicates victory for the officials; if the wind is cold and heavy, it is a great victory, but if it is cold and light, it is a minor victory. A wind coming from below the punishment position indicates disaster, while a wind coming from above the punishment position indicates fortune. A wind coming from the direction of the Three Punishments is the best, while a wind coming from the direction of self-punishment is the worst.

The 186th Divination on the Twelve Directions: Wind

According to the system of pairing the twelve Earthly Branches into groups for divination purposes, the branches Shen and Zi are called "Tanlang," indicating matters of deceit, broken trust, robbery, and attacks by thieves and bandits. The branches Si and You are called "Kuanda," indicating matters of blessings, rewards, feasts, and the coming and going of noblemen and virtuous persons. The branches Hai and Mao are called "Yinzei," indicating matters of warfare, injury, rebellion, treason, and murder. The branches Yin and Wu are called "Lianzhen" (in some versions "Zhen"), indicating matters of guests and visitors, ceremonies and rituals, weddings, court deliberations, and matters of honesty and integrity.

Chou and Xu are "Gong Zheng", indicating pursuit of grievances and military campaigns to punish. Chen and Wei are "Jian Xie", indicating deceit and disrespect towards others. For example, on the day of Tan Lang, if the wind comes from a broad and generous direction, one should still take Tan Lang into account when determining fortune or misfortune. All other situations should be interpreted in a similar manner. If there is a killing wind coming from the direction of San Xing or Wu Mu, it indicates hidden troops, and victory is certain without the need for battle.

Number 187: Against the Wind

A strong wind rises from all directions or rushes down from above to the ground, which is called "reverse wind," indicating that there will be disorderly soldiers coming. If the wind starts at寅 (Yin) hour, the host will be in disfavor; if at辰 (Chen) hour, the guest army will be in disfavor; if at午 (Wu) hour, relatives will be in disfavor; if at申 (Shen) hour, those nearby will be in disfavor; if at dusk, outsiders will rebel. If the wind comes from the角 (Jiao) direction on a宫 (Gong) day, there will be sudden military encirclement of the city. If the wind cuts through trees by the middle of the month, the city will fall. On a羽 (Yu) day, if the wind is noisy, the sun is dim and thick fog prevails, there will be military encirclement of the city, and the guest army will win. On a商 (Shang) day, if the wind comes from the辰 (Chen), 戌 (Xu), 丑 (Chou), or 未 (Wei) directions, there will be blockage of passes and bridges, and roads will be cut off. On a阴贼 (Yin Ze) day, if the wind comes from the阴贼 (Yin Ze) direction, there will be fierce fighting on a very cold day.

Wind and Rain Divination 188

Attacking a city and surrounding it for ten days without thunder or rain indicates that there are divine beings protecting the city, so one should hurry to retreat. On the day of departure for a military campaign, if there is light rain that dampens the clothes, it is a sign of victory for the army. However, if there is a storm with strong winds and thunder, and the sun is not visible all day, and this coincides with the days of self-punishment (辰, 午, 戌, 亥), it is a great omen for military disaster. When in battle, if suddenly a cold mist spreads around, the flagpole of the general's banner breaks, dark clouds block the sun, and the banners suddenly rise and fall, this is a sign of defeat.

Gentle winds and clouds move from the enemy's side to our side, indicating our army will win; we should attack immediately. If the opposite occurs, it is ominous. When banners and their shadows flutter in the wind, and the banners point toward the enemy, we should attack right away and will be victorious. On the day a general raises his banner, if the wind is favorable and the banners point forward, and the sound of the drums is clear, this is a sign of victory. By grasping these signs, we can ensure a sure victory and stabilize the hearts of the entire army.

A whirlwind picks up dust, appearing like a bundle of grain or a long snake, twisting and swirling towards, indicating an omen of misfortune; one should be on high alert. If the wind comes low and sweeps close to the ground, it indicates that enemy troops are approaching quickly. If the wind is high up, the enemy will arrive more slowly. A strong wind within the camp that breaks trees indicates that the general will lose his position. If the wind changes direction unpredictably and drifts uncertainly, it indicates that enemy troops will arrive soon. When two armies are fighting, if a strong wind causes the day to become dark and raises dust that attacks the enemy, it indicates a great victory; the opposite is ominous. When the army has just arrived and the city to be attacked is cloudy with no wind but has fine drizzle, it indicates that our army will suffer defeat. If there is a distant thunderstorm coming at the beginning of battle, it is a sign of a great victory. If a whirlwind enters the camp, breaking flags and spears, and damaging tents, it indicates that thieves have entered the camp and the generals are in danger of losing their lives.

If the wind coming from this direction is smooth and unimpeded (「yù」is alternatively written as 「yú」), this is called 「Cooling Wind」. The arrival of the Cooling Wind in accordance with the seasonal timing is a sign of peace and prosperity for the military and people. If the wind arises from the 「Ghost Gate」direction, it is detrimental to the military and people. On the day of Autumn Equinox, the direction corresponds to the Dui palace. If the wind coming from this direction is sharp and clear, this is called 「Changhe Wind」. The arrival of the Changhe Wind in accordance with the seasonal timing is a sign of peace and prosperity for the military and people.

The arrival of wind, when it follows its proper course, signifies auspiciousness, but when it goes against its proper course, it indicates ominous signs. This ultimately depends on the righteousness or wickedness of human hearts. Only when human hearts are upright can they align with the intentions of heaven, earth, and spirits. Therefore, by observing the wind on the first day of each solar term, one can discern the portents of good or ill fortune. If those in command can respond to heaven in accordance with the right path, how could wind ever become an omen of misfortune?

However, as long as we fight quickly and decisively, our army can achieve victory.
