Twelve Earthly Branches in Verse
Charting guides: BaZi Chart Calculator
The poem about the Zi branch says: The moon's branch is Zi water, occupying the first position among the twelve branches. Streams flow ceaselessly, and the ocean is boundless. At this time, the heavenly path begins to return to yin and the earth's energy is flourishing. On earth, the water is warm, and the metal energy is nurtured here. If the Wu branch comes to clash and break, the energy becomes unstable; even if the Mao branch comes to clash, there is still some affection between them. If the column contains Shen and Chen to form a water pattern, it becomes the surging of rivers and seas. The poem about the Chou branch says: In the deep winter when Chou is established, one fears the ice and frost. But who knows that the heavenly time has already turned to the second yang. Once the warm energy arises, the earth can nurture all things; the cold metal should not merely be hidden. The Chou branch's clash and conflict with Xu and Wei is not entirely useless (the clash of three earths can open the warehouse), and its gathering with You (rooster) and Si (snake) has a direction. If the day column and hour column have excessive water and wood, one should go to the southeast region of Xun and Li to warm up.
The poem about the寅 (Yin) palace says: The寅 is wood in the Northeast艮 (Gen) palace, established at the beginning of spring, where the Triple Yang energy converges. The丙 (Bing) fire is born in寅. It forms a Three Punishments with巳 (Si) (snake) and申 (Shen) (monkey), and a Triple Harmony with them. It also shares the same nature with卯 (Mao) and未 (Wei), making them family. To achieve transcendence, one must meet午 (Wu) to form a fire trinity. If one encounters申 (Shen) that clashes with寅, it brings loss of fortune and damage to the official position. For those with many fire elements in their four pillars, they should avoid further fire places, as dry wood is not suitable to go south. The poem about the卯 (Mao) palace says: The卯 wood is flourishing and beautiful, with deep essence. How could the wood of the middle spring not dislike metal? The presence of庚 (Geng) and辛 (Xin) repeatedly brings worry about the申 (Shen) and酉 (You) places. The repetition of亥 (Hai) and子 (Zi) brings fear of壬 (Ren) and癸 (Gui) water. When encountering the Six Clashes, the wood is like falling leaves; when meeting the Triple Harmony, the wood becomes a forest. If the day pillar and hour pillar are heavy with autumn metal, and one goes west, the calamity will be unbearable.
The poem about the辰 (Chen) palace says: Chen corresponds to the third month, when water and earth are damp and moist, most capable of nurturing and cultivating the roots of all things. Although Jia wood has already declined here, there is still the lingering energy of Yi wood; although Ren water has entered its tomb here, Gui water gains spiritual energy here. A key (Xu) is needed to open this water reservoir; if there are threefold impacts, the gate of the reservoir will be broken through. When water and earth meet repeatedly and the destiny moves toward the Northwest, there is worry that even thick earth cannot be preserved. The poem about the巳 (Si) palace says: Si is at the beginning of summer, when fire's strength increases and shines, and the transformation of nature reaches the peak of six yang. Geng metal loses its strength here, relying entirely on Wu earth as its mother to be born; Wu earth gains its time here, and its official position comes along with its mother's energy. The trine of Si with Yin and Shen does not cause harm; but if Hai (Dengming) comes to clash, there will be damage. If the great destiny moves toward the Southeast, where growth occurs, the fire will burn the sky, and the situation will be very intense.
The poem about the午 (Wu) palace says: In the fifth lunar month, the heat is intense, and the fire is rising strongly. Six yang has reached its peak, while a single yin quietly emerges. The metal of Geng is out of its proper position, and its body is useless; the earth of Ji is in its native place, and its official position is established. When Shen and Zi arrive together, they clash with Wu, causing conflict. When Xu and Yin are present, they form a fire trinity, making the fire even brighter. The southeast is its strong position, while the northwest is where it is weak and confined, losing its form. The poem about the未 (Wei) palace says: In the sixth lunar month, the yin energy gradually deepens, and the fire gradually weakens. The Wei palace contains hidden wood as official and hidden fire as seal, but it does not contain wealth. If there is no卯 (Mao) or亥 (Hai) nearby to join, its form will not change easily; if there is distant punishment and clash, this wooden warehouse can be opened. If there is no fire in the pillar, fear the metal and water years; those with much cold energy prefer the fire of Bing and Ding. The favorable and unfavorable aspects of the useful god must be clearly distinguished, and do not mistake a precious jade for a piece of stone by mistake.
The poem about the Monkey (申) says: The Monkey Metal is strong and vigorous, and when it meets the month of the Sheep (月支), it shows its true nature. Water and Earth both have their growth in this palace. When it meets the Fire of the Snake (巳) and the Horse (午), it is forged into swords and spears. When it falls into the Water of the Rat (子) and the Dragon (辰), it is sharpened to a bright edge. Although there is much Wood, without Fire to assist, the Monkey Metal can still overcome it. If Earth is too heavy and buries the Metal, it becomes harmful. To ask what this divine image is like, it is very different from the warm and soft pearls and jade (辛 Metal). The poem about the Rooster (酉) says: The August Rooster is called 'From Kui', already having a name, most admirable is the white Metal and clear Water. If there is much Fire and the great destiny moves eastward, there is worry about Fire being born in the Tiger (寅) and Ox (卯). If Wood is strong and the great destiny moves southward, there is fear of the Fire of Bing and Ding overcoming the Metal. If there is Water and moist Earth in the pillar, it should be useful; when the great destiny moves to the Northwest, how can it be said to be emotionless? Even if the Triple Harmony of Metal makes it hard and sharp, it is still different from the unrefined crude Metal.
The poem about the戌 palace says: In September, the nature of戌 is most strong, do not only say that all things are stored away here. It is the storage place for the great furnace and fierce fire, capable of forming objects; dull iron and stubborn metal all rely on it to take charge. It opens up the辰 (sea cave dragon) and produces rain and dew, and when it combines with寅 (mountain head tiger) it brings about literary talent. The辰 and戌, called 「Tianluo」, though they are a maze of confusion, only cause real harm to those with fire destiny. The poem about the亥 palace says:亥 is called 「Dengming」, the water source is extremely deep; rain and snow bring cold, it is exactly the time of six yin. It must wait for the午 (Shengguang) to match before it can use the earth; if it does not meet the申 (Songsong) to generate, there is much gold but no use. The waters from the five lakes gather here to form a great image, the triple harmony water pattern holds it, which is truly a sincere effort to complete. If you want to find the warm and gentle places in the world, go to the northeast Gen, east Zhen, southeast Xun, and south Li.
General Ode
The general poem says: The application of the Five Phases does not have fixed rules; to reach a sacred level and transcend the mundane requires a special kind of divine mechanism; one only needs to go directly to the source to find its origin, and the distinctions of life and death, decline and prosperity will naturally become clear. Below is the basic correspondence. The directions associated with the Heavenly Stems and Earthly Branches and the Five Phases: East is Jia and Yi with Yin and Mao, belonging to Wood; South is Bing and Ding with Dingsi and Wu, belonging to Fire; West is Geng and Xin with Shen and You, belonging to Metal; North is Ren and Gui with Hai and Zi, belonging to Water; Center is Wu and Ji with Chen, Xu, Chou, and Wei, belonging to Earth. The Five Harmonies of the Heavenly Stems: Jia combines with Ji, Yi combines with Geng, Bing combines with Xin, Ding combines with Ren, and Wu combines with Gui.
The Six Harmonies of the Earthly Branches: Zi combines with Chou, Yin combines with Hai, Mao combines with Xu, Chen combines with You, Si combines with Shen, and Wu combines with Wei. The Triple Harmonies of the Earthly Branches: Yin, Wu, and Xu form a fire group, Hai, Mao, and Wei form a wood group, Shen, Zi, and Chen form a water group, and Si, You, and Chou form a metal group. The order of mutual generation among the Five Phases: metal generates water, water generates wood, wood generates fire, fire generates earth, and earth generates metal. The order of mutual control among the Five Phases: metal controls wood, wood controls earth, earth controls water, water controls fire, and fire controls metal. The禄 positions of the Ten Heavenly Stems: Jia's禄 is in Yin, Yi's禄 is in Mao, Bing and Wu share the same禄 in Si, Ding and Ji share the same禄 in Wu, Geng's禄 is in Shen, Xin's禄 is in You, Ren's禄 is in Hai, and Gui's禄 is in Zi — these are all the official positions of each stem. The above combinations of harmony, group formation, generation, control, and禄 positions are fundamental skills for arranging a birth chart, identifying heavenly stems, and analyzing punishments, clashes, harmonies, and combinations. These must be memorized first.
The five elements pass through twelve stages in their cycle: birth, bathing, capping, officialdom, prosperity, decline, illness, death, storage, extinction, conception, and nourishment. The four birth positions are: fire is born in the寅 (Mao) branch, metal is born in the巳 (Si) branch, water and earth are born in the申 (Shen) branch, and wood is born in the亥 (Hai) branch. The four bathing (failure) positions are: fire fails in the卯 (Mao) branch, metal fails in the午 (Wu) branch, water and earth fail in the酉 (You) branch, and wood fails in the子 (Zi) branch. The four officialdom positions are: fire has officialdom in the巳 (Si) branch, metal has officialdom in the申 (Shen) branch, water and earth have officialdom in the亥 (Hai) branch, and wood has officialdom in the寅 (Yin) branch. The four storage (repository) positions are: fire's repository is in the戌 (Xu) branch, metal's repository is in the丑 (Chou) branch, water and earth's repository is in the辰 (Chen) branch, and wood's repository is in the未 (Wei) branch. The four extinction positions are: fire is extinct in the亥 (Hai) branch, metal is extinct in the寅 (Yin) branch, water and earth are extinct in the巳 (Si) branch, and wood is extinct in the申 (Shen) branch. The above rules regarding the birth, bathing, officialdom, repository, and extinction of the five elements can be found in the subsequent "Yang Cycle and Yin Reverse Diagram." They are listed here to provide a basis for beginners.
The Earthly Branches Six Clashes are: Zi and Wu clash, Yin and Shen clash, Mao and You clash, Chen and Xu clash, Si and Hai clash, and Chou and Wei clash. These are pairs of branches separated by seven positions and facing each other directly. The Three Punishments are remembered as follows: Yin is punished by Si, and Si is punished by Shen, which is called the Punishment of Ingratitude; Chou is punished by Xu, Xu is punished by Wei, and Wei is punished by Chou, which is called the Punishment of Overbearing Power; Mao is punished by Zi, and Zi is punished by Mao, which is called the Punishment of Impropriety; Chen, Wu, You, and Hai each punish themselves, which is called Self-Punishment. The Six Harmful Relationships are remembered as follows: Zi and Wei are not close, Chou harms Wu, Yin and Si are angry with each other, Mao harms Chen, Shen harms Hai, You and Xu meet, and the harmful relationship is even deeper.
The twelve Earthly Branches contain the following heavenly stems: Zi contains only Gui water, which is Gui's seat of power; Chou contains three parts of Ji earth, along with Xin metal and Gui water; Yin contains Jia wood, Bing fire, and Wu earth; Mao is not listed here and is likely missing; Chen contains Wu earth, along with Yi wood and Gui water; Si contains Bing fire, Wu earth, and Geng metal; Wu contains Ding fire and Ji earth; Wei contains Ding fire, Yi wood, and Ji earth; Shen contains Geng metal, Ren water, and Wu earth; You contains only Xin metal, which is most pure; Xu contains Ding fire, Xin metal, and Wu earth; Hai contains Ren water and Jia wood. One must remember these hidden heavenly stems in each of the twelve branches. The original text does not list Mao, which is probably an omission.
The Five Phases have rules of generation, control, transformation, and mutual assistance, each with their own favorable and unfavorable aspects. When metal is strong and fire comes to temper it, it can become a vessel; when fire is strong and water comes to assist it, it can achieve a state of balance; when water is strong and earth comes to restrain it, it can form a pond; when earth is strong and wood comes to loosen it, it can allow for circulation; when wood is strong and metal comes to cut it, it can become a beam. This group describes a situation where the day's main element is strong and meets a controlling force, which is favorable and forms a proper pattern. As long as the pattern is pure and not mixed, and the big years do not contradict the useful god, one can attain the rank of minister or high official. Metal relies on earth to be generated, but too much earth can bury the metal; earth relies on fire to be generated, but too much fire can scorch the earth; fire relies on wood to be generated, but too much wood can make fire too intense and uncontrollable; wood relies on water to be generated, but too much water can float the wood; water relies on metal to be generated, but too much metal can make water turbid. This group describes a situation where the main element is weak and the nurturing star is too strong and repeated, causing harm. However, having a lot of metal generating water is not necessarily bad, but if water is weak and there is frequent appearance of庚 and辛 (metal), it is a different case. Now looking at the next group: metal can generate water, but too much water can sink the metal; water can generate wood, but too much wood can reduce the water; wood can generate fire, but too much fire can burn the wood; fire can generate earth, but too much earth can cover the fire; earth can generate metal, but too much metal can make the earth weak. This group describes a situation where the main element is weak and the injurious or food stars are too strong and overlapping, causing harm. If the main element is originally strong and there are many similar elements to support it, then the injurious or food stars are not harmful; if the injurious or food stars are pure and not mixed, they can form a unique pattern on their own.
Metal can overcome Wood, but if Wood is too hard, it can break the Metal; Wood can overcome Earth, but if Earth is too thick, it can break the Wood; Earth can overcome Water, but if Water is too much, it can wash away the Earth; Water can overcome Fire, but if Fire is too fierce, it can dry up the Water; Fire can overcome Metal, but if Metal is too much, it can extinguish the Fire. This group discusses a situation where the person's strength is weak and the wealth star is too strong, which should be something the person can overcome, but instead the wealth star harms the person. If the person's strength is strong and the wealth star is appropriate, then it is a prosperous and wealthy birth. Now look at the next group: if Metal is weak and meets Fire, it will be melted; if Fire is weak and meets Water, it will be extinguished; if Water is weak and meets Earth, it will be blocked; if Earth is weak and meets Wood, it will be collapsed; if Wood is weak and meets Metal, it will be cut. This group discusses a situation where the person's strength is weak and the official star or harmful star is too strong, leading to certain disability, early death, or poverty.
When gold is too strong, it needs water to drain its excess, thus reducing its sharpness; when water is too strong, it needs wood to drain its power, thus dispersing its force; when wood is too strong, it needs fire to transform its rigidity; when fire is too strong, it needs earth to control its flames; when earth is too strong, it needs metal to relieve its blockage. This passage discusses a situation where the main element is weak and is attacked by the "ghost" (seven杀, seven deadly), but as long as there is something to transform and drain it, it becomes favorable. For example, if the day stem is Jia wood and is attacked by metal (seven杀), if there is a Ren or Gui water in the hour pillar, or if the earth branch has Shen-Zi-Chen forming a water trinity, then the metal will generate water, and the water will generate wood, turning the凶 (adverse) into吉 (favorable). All other situations follow the same principle.
Fortunes of Auspicious Deities
The mnemonic for "Tianyi Nobleman" is: Jia and Wu Stems take Chou (ox) and Wei (sheep), Yi and Ji Stems take Zi (rat) and Shen (monkey), Bing and Ding Stems take Hai (pig) and You (rooster), Ren and Gui Stems take Mao (rabbit) and Si (snake), Geng and Xin Stems take Wu (horse) and Yin (tiger). This indicates the direction where the Nobleman is located. The "Sanche Yilan Fu" says: Tianyi is the literary star; those who possess it are intelligent and wise. The "Jingshen Fu" says: when the Day Stem is seated above the Nobleman, one's life is upright and noble. The "Tongming Fu" says: the Nobleman can suppress the Three Punishments, ultimately adhering to the right path. The "Mijie" says: the Nobleman prefers to harmonize with other branches; it also says that those who are upright and generous have the Tianyi Nobleman in a flourishing position. The "Fugui Fu" says: the prosperous and esteemed have their destiny accompanied by the Nobleman star.
The method for calculating Tiande is: those born in January have the character Ding in their pillar, those born in February have the character Shen, those born in March have the character Ren, those born in April have the character Xin, those born in May have the character Hai, those born in June have the character Jia, those born in July have the character Gui, those born in August have the character Yin, those born in September have the character Bing, those born in October have the character Yi, those born in November have the character Zi, and those born in December have the character Geng. These are the Tiande Nobleman. The method for calculating Monthly Virtue is: those born in the months of Yin, Wu, and Xu have the character Bing as their Monthly Virtue; those born in the months of Shen, Zi, and Chen have the character Ren as their Monthly Virtue; those born in the months of Hai, Mao, and Wei have the character Jia as their Monthly Virtue; and those born in the months of Si, You, and Chou have the character Geng as their Monthly Virtue. Together, they are called the Heavenly and Monthly Virtues, both of which are deities that relieve misfortune.
The Sanche Yilan Fu says: Those who have Heavenly Virtue and Monthly Virtue supporting them will benefit in official career and suffer little illness; it also says that when both virtues support, all kinds of evils will dissipate. The Xinjing Fu says: Heavenly and Monthly Virtues are divine saviors, and all kinds of calamities cannot harm them. The Xiangxin Fu says: When Heavenly and Monthly Virtues and the Seal Star mutually generate, the person will act with benevolence and spread virtue. The Youwei Fu says: Those who are kind-hearted and intelligent are blessed by Heavenly and Monthly Virtues. The Aozhi Fu says: When the destiny chart is lacking and the seven deadly stars are strong, Heavenly and Monthly Virtues are needed to bring good fortune and rescue. The Mijue says: When Heavenly and Monthly Virtues are present above the day stem, the person will have no misfortunes or worries throughout life; if they also meet the General Star, their name can be recorded in the prime minister's mansion.
The method of determining "Xuetang" (Academy) is based on the long life position of the day stem. For Jia day, Xuetang is in the亥 month or亥 hour; for Yi day, it is in the午 month or午 hour; for Bing day, it is in the寅 month or寅 hour; for Ding day, it is in the酉 month or酉 hour; for Wu day, it is in the寅 month or寅 hour; for Ji day, it is in the酉 month or酉 hour; for Geng day, it is in the巳 month or巳 hour; for Xin day, it is in the子 month or子 hour; for Ren day, it is in the申 month or申 hour; for Gui day, it is in the卯 month or卯 hour. The "San Che Yilan" states that those with Xuetang in their fate are most suitable for roles as teachers and scholars. The "Fu Gui Fu" says that intelligent people have Xuetang in their destiny. Xuetang is determined by the long life position of the day stem, where life qi gathers, thus indicating a person who is intelligent in reading and suitable for positions in literature and education.
The method of calculating "official, noble, study and school" is to take the long life position of the official star and noble deity as the study and school. For example, for Jia and Yi wood, their official and noble deities are Geng and Xin metal. Metal's long life is in Si and its official position is in Shen. Therefore, for days born on Jia or Yi, if the pillar contains the character Si or Shen, it indicates the official, noble, study and school. The rest of the ten heavenly stems are calculated in the same way. The method of calculating "Huagai" is as follows: if the year branch belongs to Yin, Wu, and Xu, then the presence of Xu indicates Huagai; if it belongs to Hai, Mao, and Wei, then the presence of Wei indicates Huagai; if it belongs to Shen, Zi, and Chen, then the presence of Chen indicates Huagai; if it belongs to Si, You, and Chou, then the presence of Chou indicates Huagai. This is taking the storage position of the triple harmony formation.
The Sanche Fu says: Those who have Huagai appearing repeatedly are willing to study diligently; it also says Huagai is a mark of the intelligent. An old saying says: If Huagai falls into Kongwang, it is especially suitable for becoming a monk or a Taoist. The Aozhi Fu says: If Huagai appears in the pillars along with Tianyue two virtues, then one is destined to be of noble status. The Tongming Fu says: Those who have Huagai on their chart are certainly people from outside the secular world, devoted to Buddhist monasteries and literary circles, and content to sit on a meditation cushion or a bamboo mat. The Zao wei Fu says: If the official seal meets Huagai, one may hold a position in the Hanlin Academy. An old song says: Those born with Huagai are destined to have literary talent, with many skills and deep thinking.
The method of calculating the General Star: For those with the year branch belonging toYin-Wu-Xu (Fire triad), look for午; for those with the year branch belonging toShen-Zi-Chen (Water triad), look for子; for those with the year branch belonging toSi-You-Chou (Metal triad), look for酉; for those with the year branch belonging toHai-Mao-Wei (Wood triad), look for卯. This is the General Star, which is taken from the Prosperity position of the Triple Harmony Formation. An old rhyme says: The General Star indicates a person suitable for both literary and military paths, with abundant salary and high authority, which is easy to imagine. The method of calculating the Post-horse: For those with the year branch belonging toYin-Wu-Xu (Fire triad), look for申; for those with the year branch belonging toShen-Zi-Chen (Water triad), look for寅; for those with the year branch belonging toSi-You-Chou (Metal triad), look for亥; for those with the year branch belonging toHai-Mao-Wei (Wood triad), look for巳. This is the Post-horse, which is taken from the position opposite the Growth position of the Triple Harmony Formation, hence indicating travel and movement.
The Sanche Fu says: When the Post-horse meets the whip and is urged on, a person will find no peace. The Zao Weilun says: A horse's head carrying a sword (meaning the horse and the seven killer star are in the same column) can guard the borders; it also says that only Renshen and Guiyou are considered true "horse's head with a sword." The Shenming Fu says: When the Post-horse runs toward the wealth land, a person's success is as fierce as a tiger. The Jishuo says: Those with many horses in their destiny are promoted and elevated if they are noblemen, but for common people, many horses only mean constant toil; it also says that the Post-horse is most disliked when it falls into Kongwang. An old song says: If a person's destiny includes the Post-horse, it is very beneficial for those seeking fame and fortune.
The method of calculating "Heavenly Pardon" is: for those born in spring, use the day of Wuyin; for those born in summer, use the day of Jiawu; for those born in autumn, use the day of Wushen; and for those born in winter, use the day of Jiazi. The "Three Wagon Comprehensive View" says: if a person's destiny encounters Heavenly Pardon, they need not worry about worldly matters. The "Collection of Interpretations" says: if Heavenly Pardon is present in one's destiny, encountering misfortune will not result in calamity, but such people tend to enjoy drinking alcohol. The method of calculating "Fortune Virtue" is: if the day stem is Jichou and the earthly branches include Si, You, and Chou, it is called Fortune Virtue; if the heavenly stems have three Yi and the earthly branches include Si, You, and Chou, it is called秀气.
The formula for "Fuxing Nobleman" is: Jia and Bing stems invite each other and enter the寅 (Tiger) position; if they also meet the Zi (Rat) position, it is most powerful; Wu takes Shen, Ji takes Wei, and Ding takes Hai; Yi and Gui stems meet Chou (Ox) and will have great fortune and honor; Geng reaches the Wu (Horse) position, Xin accompanies Si, and Ren rides on Chen (Dragon), which is very favorable. The "Sanche Yilan Fu" says: Fuxing Nobleman is respected by all, and in a person's destiny, encountering this deity is most desirable. The "Luanxi Dejiexin Ge" says: Hongluan starts from Mao position and counts backward; to find Tianxi, it is opposite to Hongluan; also, Jiejing must count backward from Xu to You; to find Tiande, start from You and count forward; for Yuesheng, start from Si and count forward. If a person's destiny meets any of these deities, it is joy upon joy without any danger.

The method of calculating "Six Jia Empty" (六甲空亡): The ten heavenly stems are paired with the twelve earthly branches, and in each ten-day period (旬), two branches remain unpaired with a stem, and these two branches are called empty (空亡). In the Jiazi (甲子) period, the branches Xu and Hai are missing; in the Jiaxu (甲戌) period, the branches Shen and You are missing; in the Jiashen (甲申) period, the branches Wu and Wei are missing; in the Jiawu (甲午) period, the branches Chen and Si are missing; in the Jiachen (甲辰) period, the branches Yin and Mao are missing; in the Jiayin (甲寅) period, the branches Zi and Chou are missing. The "Zao Wei Fu" (造微赋) says: If empty (空亡) coincides with Guasu (寡宿), it indicates loneliness and old age. The "Ji Shuo" (集说) says: Those whose fate includes empty (空亡) are generally intelligent. The method of calculating "Sangmen" (丧门): Count two branches forward from the earthly branch of the birth year. Those born in the Zi year see Chen, those born in the Chou year see Mao, those born in the Yin year see Chen, those born in the Mao year see Si, those born in the Chen year see Wu, those born in the Si year see Wei, those born in the Wu year see Shen, those born in the Wei year see You, those born in the Shen year see Xu, those born in the You year see Hai, those born in the Xu year see Zi, and those born in the Hai year see Chou. The method of calculating "Diao Ke" (吊客): The upper row is Zi, Chou, Yin, Mao, Chen, Si, Wu, Wei, Shen, You, Xu, Hai, which correspond to the birth year. The lower row is Xu, Hai, Zi, Chou, Yin, Mao, Chen, Si, Wu, Wei, Shen, You. Using the same method as for Sangmen, the corresponding branch is Diao Ke. The "Ji Shuo" (集说) says: The first three positions in the fate are Sangmen, and the last three positions are Diao Ke. If the native's destiny conflicts with the year's heavenly stem, it indicates mourning and crying, and even if it is minor, it may indicate the loss of distant relatives.
The method of calculating "Gou Shen" (hook spirit): the upper row uses the order of Zi, Chou, Yin, Mao, Chen, Si, Wu, Wei, Shen, You, Xu, Hai as the birth year, and the lower row corresponds to Mao, Chen, Si, Wu, Wei, Shen, You, Xu, Hai, Zi, Chou, Yin. Following the previous example, the Gou Shen is determined. The method of calculating "Jiao Shen" (tied spirit): the upper row remains unchanged, and the lower row corresponds to You, Xu, Hai, Zi, Chou, Yin, Mao, Chen, Si, Wu, Wei, Shen. Following the previous example, the Jiao Shen is determined. The "Zao Weilun" states: if Gou Shen overlaps with the Three Punishments, the person will certainly suffer repeated exile and military service. The "Ji Shuo" states: the first four positions in the destiny are Gou Shen, and the last four positions are Jiao Shen. For example, someone born in the year Wu, You is Gou Shen and Mao is Jiao Shen. If the person's destiny coincides with the big year or the current year's destiny, it indicates illness, obstruction, and physical harm, or financial loss and being involved in troubles. When Gou Shen is in the front and Jiao Shen is in the back, they enclose the destiny from both sides, so ancient people regarded them asInauspicious Spirit (malevolent spirits) that cause entanglement and trouble.
The method of calculating "Gu Shen" (Solitary God): For the birth year, take Zi, Chou, Yin, Mao, Chen, Si, Wu, Wei, Shen, You, Xu, Hai in order, and correspond them to Yin, Yin, Si, Si, Si, Shen, Shen, Shen, Hai, Hai, Hai, Yin respectively. Following the previous example, Gu Shen is determined by taking the next Meng branch (the first branch of the season) of the Triple Harmony Formation of the birth year. The method of calculating "Guasu" (Solitary Guest): For the birth year, take the same sequence, and correspond them to Xu, Xu, Chou, Chou, Chou, Chen, Chen, Chen, Wei, Wei, Wei, Xu respectively. Following the previous example, Guasu is determined by taking the previous Mu Ku branch (storage branch) of the current position. The Secret Manual says: When Gu Shen and Guasu form a group, it indicates a state of being alone and isolated. The Astonishing Spirit Manual says: If Gu Shen and Guasu are in the same position as a Nobleman, the situation should be considered differently; it also says that if Gu Shen and Huagai (Imperial Cap) conflict in the day pillar or hour pillar, it indicates being lonely and isolated; it also says that if both Gu Shen and Huagai appear, it often indicates a person who becomes a monk or nun in the mountains or forests.
The Tongming Assignment says: If the two stars of Guoshen and Guasu are accompanied by official stars and seal stars, they will certainly become the leaders of Buddhist monasteries. The Shenming Assignment says: For a male's destiny, having Guoshen indicates often being a person living away from home; for a female's destiny, having Guasu indicates often being a woman marrying far away to another province. An old song says: Guoshen is most harmful for a man to harm his wife, while Guasu causes a woman to harm her husband. The method of "Gediao" is: starting from the day pillar and the hour pillar, the pillar between the day pillar and the hour pillar is called Gediao. For example, if the day is Chou and the hour is Mao (with Yin in between), or if the day is Chen and the hour is Wu (with Si in between), or if the day is Wei and the hour is You, or if the day is Xu and the hour is Zi, all these cases belong to this category. The Xinjing Assignment says: when Gediao meets and also conflicts with the annual master, it clearly indicates the fate of being exiled or sent to military service.
The method of calculating Xianchi (commonly known as Taohua) is as follows: if the year branch is in the Fire triad (Yin-Wu-Xu), look for the character Mao; if it is in the Water triad (Shen-Zi-Chen), look for You; if it is in the Metal triad (Si-You-Chou), look for Wu; if it is in the Wood triad (Hai-Mao-Wei), look for Zi. This is called Xianchi killing. It is derived from the position of theBathing (bathing) in the Triple Harmony Formation. This煞 is calculated from the birth year, though some calculate it from the day branch; its relationship with the day column and time column is most significant. The "Ouywei Fu" says: those who indulge in wine and women are often due to Taohua combined with killing. The "Yuxia Fu" says: when Heavenly Virtue and Xianchi meet, there will be romantic feelings in old age. The "Mianjue" says: when Taohua and Yimashi (post-horse) appear together, a person is likely to experience wandering throughout life; it also says that inverted Taohua indicates a person who is generous and charming; it also says that if a person's destiny includes Xianchi, they naturally attract trouble, men tend to be generous, while women tend to be flirtatious. Xianchi is derived from the bathing position in the Triple Harmony Formation, and bathing is also called the败地 (declining place), so this煞 mainly governs sexual desires.
The Tongming Fu says: If Taohua is accompanied by a harmonious combination, it indicates a person who is reckless and indulgent. The Zao Weilun says: If Xianchi combines with the official star, it can lead to wealth through marriage; it also says that if Taohua is located in the Prosperity position, it may result in death due to lust. The Jing Shen Fu says: Those who are morally corrupt often suffer from weakness and are influenced by Xianchi through illicit relationships. The method of calculating 'Hidden Chant' is: take Zi, Chou, Yin, Mao, Chen, Si, Wu, Wei, Shen, You, Xu, Hai as one row, and repeat the same sequence below. When each character in the upper row corresponds to the same character in the lower row, it is called Hidden Chant. The method of calculating 'Return Chant' is: the upper row remains Zi, Chou, Yin, Mao, Chen, Si, Wu, Wei, Shen, You, Xu, Hai, while the lower row corresponds to Wu, Wei, Shen, You, Xu, Hai, Zi, Chou, Yin, Mao, Chen, Si. When each character in the upper row opposes the corresponding character in the lower row, it is called Return Chant.
The book says: When return chant and hidden chant occur, there is continuous weeping; although it does not harm oneself, it will damage others. The specific method of calculation: a person born in the year of Zi (rat) who encounters the flowing year's Tai Su (great age) also being Zi is called hidden chant; a person born in the year of Zi who encounters the flowing year's Tai Su being Wu (horse) is called return chant, and the rest are calculated in the same way. An old song says: Hidden chant is a bad omen; when the great age and the flowing year meet, they are treated the same way. It also says that return chant not only harms wife and children, but also makes it difficult to establish family business and delays personal success. The method of calculating "Yuanchen" (also known as "Dahao") is: a person born in the year of Zi (rat) meets the character Wei (goat); a person born in the year of Chou (ox) meets the character Wu (horse); a person born in the year of Yin (tiger) meets the character You (rooster); a person born in the year of Mao (rabbit) meets the character Shen (monkey); a person born in the year of Chen (dragon) meets the character Hai (pig); a person born in the year of Si (snake) meets the character Xu (dog); the rest are calculated in the same way. The Secret says: When "Dahao" and "Xuannian" (suspended needle) appear together, one may not be poor but will die early. The "Shenming Fu" (Life and Destiny Assignment) says: There is no greater calamity than Yuanchen. Yuanchen is determined by the character seven positions away from the original birth year, where the characters are not harmonious. Since the energies are opposite, it mainly causes loss and depletion.
The method for calculating "Jie Sha" (Obstruction and Killing): For the birth year, take Zi (rat), Chou (ox), Yin (tiger), Mao (rabbit), Chen (dragon), Si (snake), Wu (horse), Wei (goat), Shen (monkey), You (rooster), Xu (dog), and Hai (pig) in order, and correspond them to Si (snake), Yin (tiger), Hai (pig), Shen (monkey), Si (snake), Yin (tiger), Hai (pig), Shen (monkey), Si (snake), Yin (tiger), Hai (pig), and Shen (monkey) respectively. In summary, those born in the years of Shen-Zi-Chen (Water triad) see the character Si (snake), those born in the years of Yin-Wu-Xu (Fire triad) see the character Hai (pig), those born in the years of Hai-Mao-Wei (Wood triad) see the character Shen (monkey), and those born in the years of Si-You-Chou (Metal triad) see the character Yin (tiger). All of these take the position of the absolute end in the Triple Harmony Formation. The method for calculating "Po Jun" (Breaking General): For the birth year, take Zi (rat), Chou (ox), Yin (tiger), Mao (rabbit), Chen (dragon), Si (snake), Wu (horse), Wei (goat), Shen (monkey), You (rooster), Xu (dog), and Hai (pig) in order, and correspond them to Hai (pig), Shen (monkey), Si (snake), Yin (tiger), Hai (pig), Shen (monkey), Si (snake), Yin (tiger), Hai (pig), Shen (monkey), Si (snake), and Yin (tiger) respectively. In summary, those born in the years of Shen-Zi-Chen (Water triad) see the character Hai (pig), those born in the years of Hai-Mao-Wei (Wood triad) see the character Yin (tiger), those born in the years of Yin-Wu-Xu (Fire triad) see the character Si (snake), and those born in the years of Si-You-Chou (Metal triad) see the character Shen (monkey). Po Jun takes the position opposite to the growth position in the Triple Harmony Formation, and it corresponds with Jie Sha, one before and one after, and both indicate loss and defeat.
The Sanche Yilan Fu says: Those with both Wangshen and Jiesha interacting and crossing each other are people who recite scriptures with their mouths but have hearts like snakes and scorpions; it also says that those with three layers of Pojun are certainly destined to be imprisoned or exiled. An old song says: If a person's fate meets Guanfu, legal troubles will be frequent, so do not vainly boast about one's intelligence or skills; even if the ancestral wealth piles up like mountains, it is no more than floating waves on water. It also says: Having one Pojun in the fate indicates being talkative; with two Pojuns meeting the favorable and strong positions, one will suffer from imprisonment; three Pojuns will result in hanging; and having four Pojuns will certainly lead to beheading.
The method of determining "suspended needle" is: whenever the four pillars of a birth chart contain punishment and clash, and the characters have strokes that hang downward, resembling a needle hanging in the air, it is called suspended needle killing. For example, Jiashen, Xinmao, Jiawu, etc. The Secret Manual says: if someone has both suspended needle and yang ren, they are suitable for being a butcher or a wine seller. The method of determining "flat head" is: whenever the four pillars have characters with flat tops, it is called flat head killing. For example, Jiazi, Jiachen, Jiayin, Bingchen, Bingxu, Bingyin, etc. The Secret Manual says: if someone has both flat head and suspended needle along with yang ren, they are likely to associate with livestock. The Collection of Sayings says: the flat head pattern only considers the heavenly stems. If the yang ren of the year and the suspended needle and evil stars are gathered together, and the pattern is broken, with punishment and clash occurring simultaneously and no strength, they can only be regarded as animals with hair and horns.
The method of calculating "Zi An Xing" (Purple Dark Star): The day stem's禄 position (favorable position) is followed by one position, which in the sky is called Zi An Xing, and it specializes in matters of execution and punishment. If a person's destiny encounters this star, and it is further combined with punishment, clash, breakage, or harm, this person will certainly be wicked and will die by weapons. The mnemonic for "Liuxia Sha" (Flowing霞 Killer) is: Jia stem meets You (Rooster), Yi stem meets Xu (Dog), Bing stem meets Wei (Sheep), Ding stem meets Shen (Monkey), Wu stem meets Si (Snake), Ji stem meets Wu (Horse), Geng stem meets Chen (Dragon), Xin stem meets Mao (Rabbit), Ren stem meets Hai (Pig), Gui stem meets Yin (Tiger). This is Liuxia. For men, encountering it leads to death away from home; for women, it leads to death from childbirth.
The formula for "Chong Tian Sha" (Heavenly Clash) is: when the day of birth and the hour of birth are in opposition, the person's lifespan is short; when the year of birth and the month of birth are in opposition, the lifespan is also not long. This is called "Chong Tian Sha" in the Five Phases. Those who encounter it may die young. The things to avoid are when the day of birth and the hour of birth are in opposition, and when the hour of birth and the year of birth are in opposition. The formula for "Wu Gui Sha" (Five Ghosts) is: people with wood destiny should avoid the signs of Chou (ox) and Zi (rat); people with metal destiny should avoid Wu (horse) and Wei (sheep); people with fire destiny should avoid Mao (rabbit) and Chen (dragon); and people with water or earth destiny should avoid Xu (dog) and You (rooster). Both male and female destinies that encounter this are said to be alone in emptiness.
The oral formula for "Hongyan Sha" is: being sentimental and lustful yet unknown to others — when Bing stem meets Yin, when Xin stem meets You (rooster), when Gui stem meets Shen, and when Ding stem meets Wei, they all smile and enjoy themselves; when Jia and Yi stems meet Wu (horse) and Shen, and when Geng stem meets Xu, they become the wives of the common people; when Wu and Ji stems meet Chen, and when Ren stem meets Zi, they are feared; if these divine omens meet禄 and 马, they become prostitutes by the roadside. Even the daughters of wealthy officials must secretly meet their lovers under the flowers and moon. The oral formula for "Tunyan Sha" is: when Hai (pig), Xu (dog), and Wei (sheep) meet Yin (tiger), they will suffer injuries; when Shen (monkey) and Si (snake) meet, they will fall from trees and die; when Xu (dog) meets You (rooster) and Zi (rat), they will be exiled; when Mao (rabbit) chases Si (snake), they will leave for distant lands; when Zi (rat) meets Xu (dog), they will meet a violent death; when Wu (horse) and Chou (ox) meet Yin (tiger), they will certainly harm each other; when Mao (rabbit) and Shen (monkey) meet Xu (dog), they cannot escape; when Chen (dragon) meets Chen (dragon), they will suffer water-related misfortunes.
The mnemonic for "San Qiu Wu Mu" is: San Qiu Wu Mu cause worry, parents and wife are hard to take care of. Those born in spring take Chou, those born in summer take Chen (Dragon), those born in autumn take Wei, and those born in winter meet Xu (Dog). These are the three Qiu; to know the five Mu, take the opposite positions of the three Qiu. If a person's destiny meets these, one must be cautious of troubles. The explanation for "Tian Luo Di Wang" is: Chen is called Tian Luo, and Xu is called Di Wang. It is said that Chen and Xu are the places of net, and Tianyi Nobleman does not appear here. If a person's destiny has these two, it indicates suffering from injuries, falling into difficulties, diseases that are hard to recover from, and imprisonment. The ten deities of "Ma Qian Shen Sha" are: The Post-horse, Six Harm, Huagai, Robbery Kill, Disaster Kill, Year Kill, Month Kill, Wang Shen, General Star, and Pan An.
The formula for "Flowing Year Stars" arranges twelve deities according to the position between the current year and one's birth year. The first position is the Grand Age, sharing the same palace with Sword Sharpness and Corpse Burial; the second position is the Sun and Sky; the third position is the Mourning-and-Condolence Spirit and Earth Mourning; the fourth position is the Hook, Knot, and Chain; the fifth position is the Official Symbol and Five Ghosts; the sixth position is the Death Symbol and Minor Loss; the seventh position is the Barrier and Great Loss; the eighth position is the Sudden Collapse and Heavenly Obstruction; the ninth position is the Flying廉 and White Tiger; the tenth position is the Rolled Tongue and Blessing Star along with Intelligence; the eleventh position involves the Heavenly Dog and Guest of Mourning; the twelfth position is the Disease Symbol, which should be avoided. The method for calculating the "White Tiger Star": those born in the years of Rat, Horse, Rabbit, or Rooster fall in the Snake position; those born in the years of Tiger, Monkey, Snake, or Pig fall in the Rooster position; those born in the years of Ox, Dog, Pig, or Sheep fall in the Ox position. If a person's destiny includes this star, it indicates loneliness, early death, poverty, disability, or even military exile.
The method of calculating the "Fushiping Star": For those born in the years of Zi, Wu, Mao, or You, take Si (Snake) as Fushiping, called "Snake Head Opening"; for those born in the years of Yin, Shen, Si, or Hai, take You (Rooster) as Fushiping, called "Rooster Head Shattering"; for those born in the years of Chen, Xu, Chou, or Wei, take Chou (Ox) as Fushiping, called "Ox Head Great忌". If a person's destiny includes this star, it indicates financial loss and matters of punishment and clash. The method of calculating the "Guxu God": The opposite of the empty and void palace is the Guxu. For example, if one is born in the Jiazi decade, then Xu and Hai are the empty and void palaces, so the opposite palaces of Xu and Hai, which are Chen and Si, are the Guxu. The rest of the decades are calculated similarly.
